“Change is inevitable” Change can be seen as a threat or an opportunity and Probians have taken it as an opportunity...

hange is inevitable. Apart from death and taxes, the only constant in life is change, and over the past few months we have had to accept massive changes to our lifestyle. When Probus members retire they embrace a new freedom - to go out as and when they please, to wherever they please whether it be home or overseas. In fact many Probians have worked hard and saved hard to follow their dreams and tick off items on their bucket list, whether it be a trip on The Ghan, a European River cruise, an African safari park tour or a trip to the Antarctic, Probians are curious adventurous people who value their freedom. Then with hardly any warning their freedom was taken from them and they were asked to stay home, stay safe and wash their hands! And of course they did as they were asked. For the first week they cleaned their windows, washed the car, lived out of the pantry and freezer, the “Match of the Day” morphed into “Daily Pandemic Report”. Then in the second week they cleaned out the garage and sorted all the old photos, and stayed home. In the third week the husband made the soup and even baked a cake. And the weeks passed. Change can be seen as a threat or an opportunity

and Probians have taken it as an opportunity and have found ways of maintaining the fun, friendship and fellowship ideals of Probus. I have seen many reports of clubs issuing e-newsletters reporting on activities of members, encouraging ringing lists to ensure members keep in touch, and often including a clever joke! New words have entered our vocabulary – apps, downloads, podcasts etc and Zoom has a new meaning that probably is not even in the dictionary yet. Probians have embraced technology in a way which probably surprises them. Grandchildren are proud that Nana and Poppa can text, Zoom, Skype and during lockdown this technology has been invaluable in keeping in touch with family all over the world, and reassuring to all members that despite being classed as being in the “vulnerable demographic” we were in fact healthy and still active. We can wish for things to stay the same, it takes courage to make changes but to survive we must make changes. The pandemic has been a huge wake up call for our economy and revealed how much we rely on the global community in relation to tourism, education and industry, it is going to take years to recover but to ensure that recovery happens as quickly as possible we must be

prepared to make changes. Probus will play a part in bringing opportunities which will influence the longevity of clubs and hopefully members will keep open minds to change. It won’t be easy but the challenge is there, we have an organisation that has respect in the community, looks after the wellbeing of it’s members and provides fun and friendship to our retirees. We are known for doing things for the collective good of our retiree community, lets continue to do so and lets encourage more retirees to join Probus and enjoy the positive aspects of life in our later years. Because of the uncertainty of when regular club meetings will resume (which would allow distribution of hard copy Active Retiree magazines) this digital copy has been produced. We hope you enjoy it and circulate it to your members, and potential new members. Kind Regards,

elcome to the July/August edition of the national publication for Probus in Australia, Active Retirees.

Due to the challenges in distributing the magazine, we have suspended production of the printed version. We will continue to provide a digital version of the magazine to all members electronically at no additional cost.

The digital magazine may look a little different and reading it on a screen may take some getting used to however I encourage all readers to take the time to review the magazine and read first hand how much fun Probians have when they come together in friendship. With so many Clubs across Australia, we have not always been able to include all the content we receive so in this edition we are showcasing a range of Club outings and activities over the past 12 months. This is a great way to celebrate how much Probus Fun, Friendship and Fellowship is enjoyed across the country, all year round.

During these challenging times we have come to appreciate the company of friends, family and our freedom to travel, either domestically or overseas. While the restrictions on international travel may stop us from that dream trip overseas, it does create an opportunity to appreciate our amazing country. There are so many wonderful places in Australia to explore and when you are ready to travel, we encourage you to show your support for the many advertisers that continue to support the production of the Active Retirees magazine. The travel section in this edition includes a wide range of advertisers that a ready to help you get to know Australia either all at once, or a little at a time. We also encourage you to share your stories about exploring this great nation, help us spread the word about the places you have visited in Australia and why your fellow Probians should go there too.

As usual, the magazine contains some great articles of interest for all our readers and we hope that you enjoy reading it. As this is a digital magazine, sharing it with your friends is even easier, simply forward the link so they too can read about all about Probus.

Technology To Help You Sleep Technology often gets a bad rap when it comes to night-time habits. Experts say your bedroom should be technology free. But there are some types of technology that can actually help you get a good night’s rest.

Put simply, often technology can actually keep you awake. The light emitting from screens and devices tends to inhibit the body’s ability to switch off, by preventing the production of natural melatonin. But there are actually ‘good’ technologies that can assist with sending you into a lovely slumber.

Wake-Up Gadgets If you don’t need to rely on an alarm clock to wakeup, wearable devices are a great way to wake up naturally. Devices such as a FitBit will measure your sleep quality and wake you with vibrations when your body is ready to wake. Alternatively, consider investing in a wake-up light. Before electricity, people would sleep and wake according to the sun. Why change that now? A wake-up light sits on your bedside table and wakes you naturally by brightening the room slowly, so it feels like you are waking up to natural sunlight.

White Noise While noise can be very disruptive to sleep, it’s all about the type of noise around. White noise machines gently block out other noises by providing random sounds designed to lull you to sleep. Think rushing waterfalls or the wind blowing through the trees. There are many white noise machines on offer that you can purchase. Simply pop it in your room, hit play and off to sleep you go.

Celebrating 3 F’s in NSW Getaway To Macksville 2019 On 24th March 2019, a group of 12 members from the Probus Club of New Lambton

Honeysuckle Inc travelled to Macksville for a

6-day getaway. The journey started with a pick up from Broadmeadow station to their motel accommodation in Macksville. During the

trip, members enjoyed scenic skywalks, a local day at Nambucca Heads, morning tea at Port

Macquarie, Douglas Vale winery tasting, Grafton Memorabilia, the surrounding townships, BBQ’s and much more! Despite a bus replacement

halfway through, the trip was enjoyed by all.

Copacabana’s 1st Birthday Copacabana Probus Club celebrated

their 1st Birthday in September 2019 at The Reef Restaurant overlooking Terrigal Beach NSW.

The Club has grown from 17 to 40

Probus Clubs Croquet Tournament On a very windy and early cold Monday in May

2019, the Probus Club of Nowra hosted a district Probus Clubs croquet tournament. Shoalhaven

Men’s, Shoalhaven Heads and St Georges Basin joined the friendly game followed by a later

midday BBQ luncheon at the Bomaderry Croquet Court site. In teams of four members each took

turns to hit each assigned coloured ball through the 9 hoops on the four half courts under the

very careful supervision. Tuition was received

from the Nowra Croquet Club mentors to ensure participants followed the rules. Members all enjoyed the fun, friendship and fellowship.

In August 2019, the Club visited the Lismore

Recycling Centre at Goonellabah and managed to squeeze in a delicious lunch at The Terrace Bar in the Richmond Hotel.

The new premises housing the helicopter

were very impressive, as was the new helicopter - AW139. Members learnt that this machine

can fly for longer and faster periods, covering

greater distances. Their visit to the Recycling Centre was a real eye opener to the level of

discarded clothing. The clothing is sorted and graded, the best of the items being sold in

Vinnie’s Bargain Shops, followed by exportation to African countries. The next level is turned

into reusable rags and a small balance turned into land fill. Overall, it was an insightful and educational day for members .

CPR Training Newport Probus Club held a very successful CPR Awareness session for its members in June 2019. Approximately 50 Members were led

through the basics of CPR Training and the use of a Defibrillator. The session was arranged as a result of a member suffering a cardiac arrest approximately 3 months prior.

The importance of CPR Awareness cannot be underestimated and

therefore, a CPR Awareness Session was organised for members.

HARS (Historical Aircraft Restoration Society) The Probus Club of Pittwater and members partners

embarked on a trip to HARS at Albion Park and to the railway museum at Thirlmere.

The HARS workshops and display areas had a display

of civil and military aircraft, ranging in size from a

Qantas 747 Jumbo to a Tiger Moth, with everything

in between – Mustang, F111, Sabre, Helicopters and

DC3 etc. Their website gives a full listing. Some are

flying and some are under restoration by a seriously dedicated army of volunteers.

Getting Crafty At Gregory Hills A very popular interest group of Gregory Hills Probus (NSW) is Arts and Crafts which meets monthly at the

home of Suzan Batten. “It’s a social time, “ says Suzan,

“where members bring along their interest art, craft and not forgetting plenty of chatting over a cuppa. There’s

no special skills requirement and the results have been proudly displayed at each year-end’s General Meeting.”

New Caledonian Cruise Eleven members from the Probus Club of

Toukley travelled on a cruise visiting the ports of Noumea, Lifou and Isles of Pines.

Treasurer Margaret said “Quite often we

were asked are you a Probus Group? to which we said proudly yes. One young man even

said that he had guessed as much as his father was in Probus also.” Members were driven to

Circular Quay and picked up on their return by a local Tour bus company named Skippy Down Under Tours. Overall the trip was greatly enjoyed.

20th Anniversary Celebrations The Probus Club of Prospect Inc.’s 20th Birthday and

Changeover celebration was held on 18th April in the Marana Room at Blacktown Workers’ Club.

Moss Vale’s 2-day Drive

In September 2019, Moss Vale

Probus Club enjoyed a 2 day drive. Members stopped at Braidwood

Bakery for morning tea, then onto Mogo Zoo for lunch. Shortly after, visited The Rhino compound and Tigers.

Members stayed overnight at

Aruluan Motor Lodge, Batehaven. On the Thursday, they enjoyed a

cruise on The Clyde River with fish and chips followed by ice cream.

Innisfail Coach Trip 46 members from the Innisfail Probus Club travelled by coach to the Atherton Tablelands with the first stop being a welcoming morning tea by Hayley and staff at the Whistle Stop Café at Yungaburra.

Then onto Mareeba Heritage Museum where members were met by Velina with light refreshments and an

unbelievable visit down memory lane. The Museum has so much to see from history and should be on the “must do” list.

The final stop for lunch was at Mareeba Leagues Club where staff went out of their way to look after the

members. The Club specially thanks Judi and Richard Rees and Frances Lagana for a well organised fantastic day.

A Trip to 104.1 FM Radio Station

The Marrara Probus Club, in conjunction with Territory 104.1 FM arranged a visit to the radio station followed by a tour of the Charles Darwin University, Indonesian and Chinese gardens.

The group learnt about the history of the radio station, which began back in the 1980’s, growing from

a small low powered community radio station to the professional radio station that we enjoy today, 104.1

general manager, Matt Bern provided an interesting and informative overview of the role of community radio, how programs are developed and put together, with a quick drop in, to see Steve Hooper produce his ‘Classic

Café’ show ready for the afternoon segment. A quick wave to Mel Little as she hosted the ‘Morning Show’ live in the studio and explanations of the workings of modern commercial and community radio that gave the group a quick insight into the technology that goes in to producing and hosting a show for radio. After the visit to 104.1 we had a short

walk to the Charles Darwin University

Facility Management Services where we met up with horticulturalist, Virendra

Patel who provided us a guided tour of the Indonesian and Chinese Gardens,

answered questions not just on the plants in the gardens but also general questions on plants that we grow in Darwin. The

Indonesian Garden was a surprise mainly due to the range of plants grown that

were familiar to Darwin residents and as explained, many of our plants have very

similar strains in Indonesia so we would be familiar with them.

25th Anniversary Celebrations The 25th Anniversary of the inauguration of the Probus Club of Stuart Alice Springs was held at the Gillen Club on November 13th 2019.

Judy Donnelly, Vice President, provided a moving tribute to the past Presidents and members of the Club. Peter Hoey represented the sponsoring Rotary Club of Stuart

Alice Springs and Probus South Pacific Limited. Peter presented a Certificate of Congratulations to the Probus Group and spoke about the history of establishing Probus in Alice Springs.

Mayor Damien Ryan presented pins to Foundation and Life

Members, Enid Harland and Josie Petrick, Alan Jackson, another recipitant of Foundation and Life Member pins was unable to attend.

June Noble received her 20 year pin. Ten year pins went to

Whitford’s 30th Celebrations Whitfords Combined Probus Club Inc. (WA) celebrated their 35th anniversary on 11th September 2019.

Members had an enjoyable time at the meeting remembering the Club’s long history with a group photo

and special cake baked for the occasion.

35th Club Birthday The Albany Ladies Probus Club was the first ladies Club formed in WA. The club was chartered in February

1985 with 65 members. Until October last year, three

foundation members were still involved as able in the Club.

The birthday was a quiet but enjoyable celebration

following the AGM. Members were pleased to welcome Graeme Brown , Probus District chairman and WA representative to PSPL and his wife Olwyn to the meeting and celebration.

Better Late Than Never Two long term and valued members of the Men’s Booragoon Probus Club (WA) were recently promoted to Life Membership status.

These were Peter Hughes who was elected as such on 20th November 2019

and Denis Jarvis on 19th February 2020.

One other background item was the recent private presentation of

certificates by President Geoff Bergl to our latest life members.

Willeton Rotary Fair The Willetton Ladies Probus Club joined in on the 2019 Willetton Rotary Fair on Sunday 7th April by having a Probus stand at the fair and it turned out to be a very successful day.

The team of ladies who took turns in manning the stand enjoyed meeting lots of people who stopped to

chat during the day. Many were not aware of Probus and interested to learn about the Club.

Some younger people took brochures to give to their parents or grandparents. Some ladies who are

still currently working but planning to retire in the near future, were interested to hear about Probus. Murray Young from PPSL and a member of Noranda Probus very kindly came along on the day and

brought along a couple of great Probus banners. They very helpful and informative on the day.

Annual Bus Trip Members of The Port of Albany Ladies Club ventured to Katanning for their annual bus

trip to have an extensive tour of the recently converted Flour Mill built in the late 1800â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. Now called the Premier Mill Hotel was

bought for a dollar and converted into luxury

accommodation, restaurant and bars, keeping

the historic features of the Mill in all the rooms and surrounds.

Well worth the visit.

The tour was followed by lunch at the

restaurant and they visited other places of

interest both on the drive up to Katanning and back through Gnowangerup and the Stirling Ranges.

Mystery Tour On a bright sunny Wednesday morning

3rd April 2019, 38 members from Probus

Club of Tea Tree Gully boarded the bus at 8.30 a.m. to set off on their Mystery Tour. Members headed down North East Road, Grand Junction Road, Gallipoli Road,

Regency Road, Port River Expressway etc. with Peter as the bus driver and guide.

During this mystery tour they travelled

past Osborne Shipyards, Outer Harbour terminus where the cruise liners dock, North Haven, old Fort Largs, Military Road, Hart Road over the bridge and in to Port Adelaide.

Members boarded the Dolphin for a 2 hour luncheon cruise and were treated with 10 choices for mains and 4

for desserts. Tea and coffee were also provided.

They then went back on the bus and explored many other lovely regions with great history and enjoyed more

great meals.

Members had an excellent time and were settled down for the trip back to Tea Tree Gully.

All in all a great day which was only marred by Helen one of the members having a tumble in the Museum and

now sporting a pair of sore knees.

Barossa Valley Turned 30! The Ladies Probus Club of Barossa Valley celebrated their 30th Birthday in style. Rotary District Probus Chairman Peter Perkins and his wife Joanne

attended the special meeting and Peter presented a 30th birthday certificate

which was accepted on behalf of members by President Sandra Johnston. Other guests included John Semmler, representing the Rotary Club of Barossa Valley who sponsored the Club 30 years ago, Barb Hallion, Anne Woidt from the

Gawler Ladies Probus Club with her husband Cliff and Errol Kurtz from the Barossa District Ladies Probus Club.

Museum Visit The Probus Club of Mount Gambier visited the Port MacDonnell Community Complex which houses a museum of the town’s history.

This section of South Australia’s Limestone Coast

has a great history of shipwrecks including that of the Admella.

It is an area rich in coastal scenery, great fishing

and Adam Lindsay Gordon Cottage - Dingley Dell. And

all of this just south of the famous Blue Lake and many other attractions.

Food Bank Visit Members of the

Westbourne Park Ladies’ Probus Club recently

visited Food Bank SA at Edwardstown.

Food Bank is a not

for profit organization

that sources surplus food from the food industry

for distribution to welfare agencies that in turn

provide food relief to people in need.

It was an interesting

and thought-provoking visit for members.

Royal Flying Doctor Service On the 11th April 2019 25 members from the Probus Club of Marion visited the Royal Flying Doctor Service for a tour of there facilities at West Beach South Australia.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service is one of the largest and most comprehensive aeromedical organisations in

the world, providing extensive primary health care and 24-hour emergency service to people over an area of 7.69

million square kilometres. Delivered by a dedicated team of professionals, using the latest in aviation, medical and communications technology, and supported by a vast number of volunteers and supporters, the RFDS is vital for those that live, work and travel in rural and remote Australia.

Donations are welcome to keep this operation functioning.

A Blast From The Past On The Semaphore Carousel!

On Tuesday 25th February 30 members of the West Lakes Shore Probus Club visited the seaside and the Semaphore Carousel.

Built in 1928 it is Australia’s largest operating merry-go-round with 40 beautiful hand-crafted wooden horses.

The Carousel is managed by the Rotary Club of Henley Beach

to raise money for charity and is housed in a protective cover to protect it from the elements.

Members’ faces reflected thoughts of carnivals, amusement

rides and side shows at the seaside depicted their delight as

they took a “journey back in time”! Music, rides, chatter and a bbq lunch followed by more rides rounded off a fun day with our Probus mates.

Walhalla on a Wintry Some Latrobe Ladies Probus,

Traralgon, members travelled to

Walhalla on a wintry but sunny day in late 2019. Members started the day at the Old Post Office where

they were told a little of the History of Walhalla by one of their fellow Club members, Lyn Hodson, who

volunteers there. They explored the town and had a great meal at the

Hotel or café. After checking out the recently wool bombed train, they

had a ride on the Goldfields Railway up to Thompson River and return. A very busy day was had. There is so

much to explore in Walhalla and they enjoyed what they were able to fit in.

Celebrating a Very Special Birthday Great celebrations took place at Essendon Buckley Park

Ladies Probus Club’ with their late 2019 function, celebrating member Tavy’s 100th birthday. Tavy’s daughter and son were able to attend along with Member of Parliament Ben Carroll. Tavy has been an active member of the Club since June

2007. Over 30 members attended and joined in with Tavy to

Japan Tour On May 22nd 2019, 28 members from the

Berwick Central Combined Probus Club flew with Singapore Airlines to Tokyo to begin a 17 day bus tour of Southern Japan.

On arrival day, many members used the

time to visit Mejiro Garden, which is an

oasis in suburban Tokyo. Despite its large population Tokyo still has large areas of

greenery as members discovered next day in visiting Meiji shrine. It is set in a 170

acre forest. The afternoon was spent at the amazing communications tower structure

sun and surf smiles were with happy Probians every day. Trips to the

Glass House Mountain lookout, Eumundi Market and The Australia Zoo were highlights. Free days in between, allowed for local sightseeing and pool time.

As the saying goes “What happens in Noosa stays in Noosa” so

members will endeavour to return next year and do it all over again.

“Seniors Moments” What Fun! Mersey Valley Ladies Probus Club

organised an adventure to see “Senior Moments” in Hobart. As well as members from the Club, Probus

members and friends from neighbouring Clubs joined the overnight coach trip. Firstly, it was a stop for morning

memorabilia from the 70’s & 80”s. Then onto Ross for lunch and finally our

destination in Hobart. After enjoying

a great dinner, off members went to see “Senior Moments”. They say “laughter is the best medicine” and the group

certainly can agree with that. After a

restful overnight stay in Hobart, it was off to the Salamanca Markets where a

few dollars were extracted from wallets. Lunch in Richmond and a safe trip

home concluded a great two days of fun, fellowship and food.

30th Anniversary Celebrations

also acknowledged the Foundation and Life Members of the Club, some of whom are still very active within it today. Phyllis Von Stieglitz, a Foundation and Life Member, together with Pauline Scott, Life Member

Club Tasmania headed off to the Table Cape Tulip Farm in Parramatta Creek. The

outing saw the Club enjoying the usual luscious morning

tea and then it was a lovely country drive to Wynyard.

Club Visit To Liferafts Systems Australia In June 2019, Hobart Macquarie Probus Club visited the Hobart production Centre of Life Rafts Systems Australia

(LSA) located at the Derwent Park Industrial Centre, near Prince of Wales Bay, Hobart. At LSA, they were treated to

an interesting and informative session on the manufacture and use of Life Raft Escape Systems that are deployed to the maritime industry world-wide for both naval and civilian ships.

Chris’ Story

he story of my Fathers War Medals on 29th February has

created an amazing amount of interest both in Knox area where we now live, and on Phillip Island/San Remo where we have

a house and lived there until last year, when I was diagnosed with Lymphoma Cancer.

With the amazing medical support and advances for something that

meant death with no cure a few years ago to being cancer free after 4

months of 2 types of Chemo has been amazing by Epworth Hospital at Box Hill and by my specialist Dr Matthew Ku.

The thing I was amazed to find out is that this type of blood cancer

mainly is diagnosed in men aged mid 50’s to mid 60’s, but I wasn’t aware of this condition prior to my diagnosis.

In my case, I was over the age of 70 when Epworth Hospital made

the decision to treat me like I was in my 60’s. After a lot of very painful tests the hospital put me on their program as the 3rd patient ever over the 60’s to go on the program! So far all 3 of us are doing well and are now cancer free - We are one big successful experiment!

Now I’m placed on their 5-year program which will be quarterly

check-ups.

eSafety / Be Connected

Making the most of technology to connect new friends, old friends – and the world around you

robus is all about socialising, staying active and having fun – and most of all connecting with people. That’s where eSafety’s Be Connected program is making a difference for Probus members. Be Connected is an Australian government initiative committed to improving the online confidence, skills and safety of older Australians. The Be Connected website, managed by eSafety, provides free information, learning modules and webinars designed to empower them to safely use the internet and digital technology.

Before the pandemic, Be Connected hosted face-to-face training for Probus members on online banking and shopping and avoiding online scams. Probus South Pacific Chairman Margaret Drake said there was a natural fit with the work of the two organisations.

“I know that the members who joined the face-to-face groups gained a lot and members can learn even more from the regular Be Connected online presentations,” she said. “Older Australians generally are certainly showing their interest – and their capacity – to really make the most of new technology.” The eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant said being able to interact online really enhances people’s capacity to make new friendships, be more connected with family and explore interests.

“In the past few months, the number of older Australians doing online courses to learn how to make video calls increased by 8 fold,” she said. “People are looking for ways to connect, making the most of technology.” “Since October 2019, attendance at our online presentations (or webinars) has increased by almost 300%. In addition to content on video calling, topics included using social media and staying safe online.”

More than half of people aged 70 and over, and almost one quarter of people aged 50-69, have low to no digital literacy. However, 50% of older Australians surveyed mentioned they wanted to use the internet more and said they would be more likely to use the internet if certain barriers around access, knowledge about devices and learning how to do things were addressed. What is available on the Be Connected website? • The Be Connected topic library has learning modules including the Absolute Basics, How to use video calling and WhatsApp, Introduction to myGov, How to protect yourself online, How to shop online and How to use social media. Plus there’s information about online hobbies like researching your family history, exploring Google Earth, and writing your very first blogpost. • There are step-by-step videos and interactive guides on how to set up and customise your new or used Apple smart device, Android smart device, Apple computer, or Windows computer. • The ‘Quick reads’ help older Australians stay informed about current digital issues, including how to make video calls, how to spot a scam, how to get started with podcasts and common questions about the national broadband network (nbn). • The website also has a games section that helps build mouse and keyboard skills for laptops and computers and touchscreen skills for smart devices – it’s perfect for beginners. • Friends and family can learn to be Digital Mentors, so they can support people through using digital technology and getting online.
