Sense Making Through Architecture and Design 2013

More than assests, built environment is everything around us that we see, we smell, we touch. They are everything that surround our body. They are which we learn to appreciate our daily life from. Can we create such surfaces that help us learning how to perceive? Can they enhance our appreciation of objects, of beauty, and of our own life?

MONOKROMA focuses not only in arranging programs to make business plans come to reality, we assure the worthiness of building such a built environment in the long term. We believe that architecture holds an important role in building more than objects, but feelings, and virtues, and the most important, our lives. We look for ideals, we challenge what is considered to be usual, we are eager to enhance and maximize potentials. For us, clients’ visions are worth to be realized at their best. In order to make it true, we dedicate our team in providing skills, expertise, and knowledge.

imbaran Hijau asks us to design the facade of their marketing office and service office. They expect us to generate the design from Indonesian cultural philosophy. To accommodate the request, monokroma develop four design alternatives from two patterns of Balinese traditional architecture; the first one is the pattern of the three main components of local Bali houses, which are base, body, and top; and the second one is the hierarchical pattern of Balinese temple sequencial spaces that are narrowed from public to sacred. These two patterns trigger us to execute our design as the following: we choose heavy, dark-colored, and rough material as the finishing surface of the base, we explore wood

joints for column design as its body, and we combine solid and transparent materials to enable the light coming in from the roof; other than that, we also design a symmetrical facade to mime the principle of the spaces sequencial hierarchy, that is by shortening the height and simplifying details in the wing areas. The philosphy is applied to both Jimbaran Hijau’s marketing office and service office.

iming to maximize the site with programs that are able to support tourism in Batu, Malang, the approach of this project narrows from urban study to interior design. In macro scale, this project acts as Batu’s accommodation center. The location of the site allows visitors to stay and travel to nearby tourist attractions around the site. In micro scale, this accommodation also complemented by facilities that enable it to serve visitors’ needs independently. The facilities are: restaurants, meeting rooms, sport facilities, and gift shops.

The number of the rooms available reach 600 as this project targets corporates around Surabaya and Malang to hold any events during the weekdays and local and international tourists on weekends and holidays. As it comes to those purposes then, the master plan and architecture first has to accomodate the easiest operational flow(1), hierarchy of room views(2), distribution of facilities (3,4,5), and types of rooms (6,15,17). through interior design then we at last ascertain the ambience of the rooms to accommodate such activities.
