This studio is built based on the need of learning that all its fellow member have; to dig deep to understand, to experience to be able to sense, and finally to keep on reconciling to grow.
“storage”, “simple building”, “factory”, etc; we might call these buildings with any names, however, they all basically are houses for machinery. But why “house”? Machines are not only stored, but also lived by and for the people in that building. So this kind of building is not merely a dead space for a non-living thing, it must be designed with consideration of efficiency, firmity, and also aesthetics for the sake of people who use it.

How much money we want to spend for a warehouse? How much comfortabiltiy we may sacrifice when we dwell in it? With a sustainable desin approach, monokroma proposes a passive cooling design rather than an active one that may be too expensive.

Designing an architecture is not so much about the trend, but more of style that could be accepted by the people who use it. By researching and enhancing samples of built projects, the product that monokroma suggested here is stressing on easy maintenance and local architectural value.

“Themes” and “design styles” of a house become more important than the comfort and funcionality of the space itself. In this project, monokroma aimed to bring back the concept of house as how it should be, which is as a house to lived in.

Design always related to bussines calculation. Without have to sacrife the comfort part, design is able to be arranged as such to gain the maximum profit. One of the way is by making an effective site planning, including the consideration of land expasion probability. Targeting the elites, this cluster proposes a house design that not only serves functional, but also aesthetics needs. In order to promote those ideals, monokroma provide a basic open-to-exploration house as to allow artist (chosen by the house owner) to personalize some particular architectural elements of the house.

From Automotive to Billiard Pool and Bar. Located in an unpopular mall in South Bandung, this store will be acting as an anchor that enliven the entire building. The first question that came up in mind is: What kind of style that suit the middlelow-market yet still bring modern and contemporer atmoshpehere? Bringing up the concept of rustic automotive warehouse, this pool and beer house store uses many small details of everyday automotive life as ambience maker.

The second Everyday Spa that we are honoured to design. Smaller scale, more straight to the point, and almost in the same time with the Naripan. Thinking about the facade. Should a branch of franchise store appears the same? What about the aspect of other signage along the road.. should our facade scream more? And along with the fact that as this branch do not need to care much about renovating, the budget can be spend more on its facade material detail exploration.

The two alternatives studied for this project have the same basic idea in general. Based on client’s request, the view to the site backyard should be enjoyed by the households themselves only. That is why both of the two alternatives use the same method, that is using the house mass to block the view of backyard from the main road. The first alternatives try to stay rigid and conservationist, in terms of structure and static massing. While the second propose something different. Rather than being to the point, this alternative stress the design more on unique experience while entering and viewing the backyard from the house.

IRIN’S APARTMENT UNIT Jakarta - Monica Maya
section
Small apartment unit with total GFA of 75 sqm were designed with an approach that is more personal to accommodate one family consisting of four housholds. The existing plan as shown below didn’t meet the functional requirement of three bedrooms for the households. A wall can be simply added to provide one more bedroom next to the bathroom. But that will make the arrangement of the rooms scattered randomly. To answer this functional problem, a cupboard were added in the middle of the foyer. Not only functioned as a separator of common and private rooms, which stress the house area hierarchy, this cupboard form also acts as a mediator, that is between the living room and kitchen room wall.

page accross: existing interior this page: zoning, design statements, detail for stairs door, detail for corner of walls, entrance, detail for service circulation.
As far as the demand of market is concerned, Balai Sarbini tended to seek new image for its skin. Not only that, the operator of this building also asked for a new strategy to make their day-to-day work easier. But what is image? Is it what we see? Or what we experience? Who does really experience it? Starting the design process from those questions, monokroma set a startegy to not only put make ups on Balai Sarbini surface, but also to solve the problem of experience there, which are: of the audience, of the performers, and of the service team.

What about the future? Can an image be everlastingly good? What does Balai Sarbini really need to be proud of? What monokroma suggest to be the answer is Balai Sarbini’s own existence as one of Jakarta’s heritage building. By showing its form, its structure, this public building may gain its honour from its people.

TARAKAN SHIPYARD FACILITIES Tarakan, Kalimantan - Team: Jeffrey, Oscar Randy, Fernisia
Commissioned by a group of clients whose taste in design we adore, this project was one of our most importants. “Japanese style!” they said. And we couldn’t be more challenged than that : How can Japanese style be adapted in Kalimantan context? Firstly, how can a style be recognized as a one? Can it be found in Material? Form? Ornaments? We thought more of ambience which are not only yielded by appearance, but by activities of people. So instead of copying a certain form, or ornaments, or importing material from Japan, we were more of studying how Japanese appreciate “proccesion”. Other than that, we also aware that in terms of climate, vernacular buildings -wherever they are in- share common basic ideas which we implement in our master plan and an architecture design. The next question is: How a complex of machinery houses are supposed to be designed to stand next to human’s house?
ACCOMMODATION

thoughts on buildings The mood of buildings on this shipyard facility complex varies from the one that is more calm, static, and relax to the others that is more energetic, dynamic, and high tense. Based on that gradual change of ambience needed, else than placing the buildings in a certain way on the site, we wAere also designing the architecture differently. In terms of climate response, all the buildings were designed also to take the most advantage of natural cooling and lighting. The last strategy, of course we were supposed not forget to bind the buildings unity as one neighbourhood. We might have that through the use of material, color tone, details and construction method.
Else than that the rooms inside the building also organized in a hierarchical way. The most exclusive bedrooms were to be put in the most East. And gradually to the West are the standard bedrooms, public areas, and service areas. In the middle of the building, a space where everyone can see and come into, is the inner garden. Hopefully, as the inner garden happen to be on the East side of the lobby area, every morning people can enjoy their tea and coffee along with the sun shine and breezy wind.
E
genkan : a foyer inside a building to put off shoes and wear on home sandals.
Rooms in this building arranged based on its function. Being the central of site’s security, this main room (security office) has two exit doors and three facing window walls. The road facing window wall act as the exit and entrance permit locket. The shipyard facing one provide an open view to the worker check area. And the last one act as the window to supervise the accommodation building 24/7.

Guard House & Worker Check
Accommodation To be the most calm area on the site, this building needs to be as “homey” as possible. We need to be sure that the people live inside would aware of them selves being go out to work and come back home to sleep. For this goal, we propose a procession of people coming back to their room as followed:
(may have view from inside while eating and can be seen from outside as part of security regulation)- and also supportive areas consisting of seperated roles, the rooms are grouped and positioned in a certain way. The rooms inside the supportive areas were arranged to serve the smooth step by step eating and praying activities.
To be used during the breaktime everyday, these two buildings are placed side by side to each other. As both of them have their own main areas -that need visual flexibility
An office is not only need working areas and tool stores. As the staffs will enter their own working cells, they might need a transitional space where they can have interaction with ther staffs from different cells before and after the work. This space is no other than a pathway outside the building that were being exended inside. General Office, Logistic Warehouse & Paint-Stock House
Divided into two major zones based on the users, this office is completed by a lobby that act as a connecting and welcoming space. Having two entrance in each of other crossing sides, the lobby also bridging the work-living area with the field-working area. As storages for machines and heavy equipments, this two buildings have huge doors with small openings for man, exposed high ceiling, and also sectionized solid and lattice walls to let the wind get through even though they are closed and locked.

NUSA DUA “MALL” Bali - Team: Jeffrey, Fernisia
mountain resorts
X-comm
Kuta has its own type of commercial public space, so does Seminyak, and Ubud. But what about Nusa Dua? Is BTDC enough? Through this opportunity, we explored more on Bali’s conventional and even “underground” life. We found out that Nusa Dua has a naturebeach type of ambience. And by combining it with the community of market targeted upon, we propose a “resort mall”.
