Montana Surf Brings the Fun and Excitement of Qatar and Australia to the Gallatin Valley with First-Ever World Cup Camp! Activities + Sneak peek
The Men’s World Cup brought soccer into the limelight in 2022, and the sport is poised to gain even more popularity as we ramp up for the Women’s World Cup this July. Soccer stars like Killian Mbappe, Megan Rapinoe and Naomi Girma are inspiring kids of all ages and backgrounds to pick up a ball and hit the pitch. Is your kid one of them?
What if they could compete in the World Cup right here in the Gallatin Valley? Montana Surf Soccer Club is bringing the excitement of the tournament to the Bozeman area with the inaugural Montana Surf World Cup Camp.
Players ages 4-14 will have the opportunity to train with Surf’s “best of the best” coaching staff during a weeklong camp session that will culminate with the Montana Surf World Cup tournament. Campers will begin the week with skill progressive sessions and small-sided games focused on individual player development. Midweek, campers will be placed on a team representing one of the countries that competed in the World Cup. Coaches will turn the focus to team play and game strategy in preparation for Friday’s tournament.
Sports and culture will mix as each team learns about the country they represent, including its most famous soccer stars and greatest soccer moments. During planned breaks for younger players to rest and recharge, coaches will lead art projects, creating items to be used during the Opening Ceremony.
On Friday, parents will be invited to join campers for the Opening Ceremony, Parade of Nations and the Montana Surf World Cup.
Montana Surf camps are designed to provide players with a soccer environment that is fun, educational and developmental. Each day, campers will receive quality coaching that follows the Surf Nation coaching curriculum and that emphasizes Montana Surf core values: mastery, teamwork, sportsmanship and skill, unity and integrity, resilience and responsibility and fun. Players will work on dribbling and running with the ball, passing and shooting, defending and tackling, and receiving and ball control.
All players will receive a ball, jersey and a Montana Surf World Cup medal.
About Montana Surf: Montana Surf is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization offering positive soccer programming designed to develop each player’s individual physical well-being and full human potential. Montana Surf programs build character, growth mindset, resiliency and key life skills, developing motivated citizens who make a positive impact on the Gallatin Valley community. Montana Surf believes in respect for the game, ourselves, teammates, opponents and referees.

At Headwaters Academy, a Bozeman independent middle school, we see students learning leadership skills that benefit our school every day. Beyond the benefit to our school, what can leadership skill development do for the adolescents in our greater community in the Gallatin Valley? Additionally, how can we help individual adolescents form a broader sense of their own leadership identity and an enhanced understanding of their own personal strengths and capacity? Everyone stands to benefit from improving leadership skills and effectiveness in the leaders of tomorrow.
To ensure that our community in Bozeman is cultivating a generation of leaders, our school is uniquely interested in the paper “Understanding the Leaders of Tomorrow: The Need to Study Leadership in Adolescence” which makes a case
for adding a multidisciplinary developmental perspective to leadership research. The study was published in November 2022 by Perspectives on Psychological Science
Ç How can we take concepts from the study of leadership in adults and extend them to adolescents?
Ç How can we include adolescent-focused research on peer influence and cognitive and behavioral development to form a more nuanced model of how leadership develops through life stages?
Ç How can we study adolescent leaders in athletics, social justice efforts, extracurriculars and social media to better understand how early leadership takes shape?
Ç How can we develop leadership interventions to maximize potential and facilitate better diversification of the leadership pipeline?
“The rapid development of personality, peer relationships, values and vocational identity during this period make adolescence an optimal time for developing leadership potential,” said Jennifer Tackett, a clinical psychologist at Northwestern University and the paper’s corresponding author.
One of the conditions that promotes healthy youth development is supported through programs and activities in schools and communities. Youth development researchers and practitioners emphasize that effective programs and interventions recognize youths’ strengths and seek to promote positive development, rather than addressing risks in isolation. Youth who are constructively involved in learning and doing, and who are connected to positive adults and peers, are less likely to engage in risky or self-defeating behaviors.
Providing the conditions for positive youth development is a responsibility shared by families, schools and communities.
Headwaters Academy has developed a summer day camp created to foster leadership development for adolescents. In partnership with well-designed and well-run local nonprofit camps, Camp Headwaters aims to promote youth leadership by involving youth in everything “camp,” including needs assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation. Goals include the intention for youth to serve alongside our Board of Directors and those of other nonprofit organizations in the valley.
Camp Headwaters will engage participating youth in constructive action through activities such as service learning, arts and athletics; and emphasize common values such as friendship, citizenship and learning.
Greta Thunberg, David Hogg and Malala Yousafzai are a few of the teenagers who have inspired the world. And, some might argue, they are all proof that leadership develops well before adulthood.

Summer
On February 18 and 19 at the Willson Auditorium in Bozeman, Montana Ballet Company will present The Little Mermaid, inspired by the famous Hans Christian Andersen tale. And in a few months, MBC will provide an enriching learning experience for young dancers: The Little Mermaid Summer.
Children ages 4 to 6 will learn about the creation of this original ballet and the various elements that come together to craft a full-length production: music, choreography, sets and props, costumes, lighting and more.
One of the truly beautiful aspects of this ballet is the masterful way Artistic Director Elizabeth DeFanti reinterprets the story, infusing messages of self-acceptance, self-truth and embracing one’s own inherent worth – all values we wish to instill in our children.
The Little Mermaid Summer is for all children ages 4 to 6 and will be held Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon. Three sessions will be offered: June 12-15, June 19-22 and June 26-29.
Each session offers a daily ballet class, dance-related arts and crafts, story time, choreography, an in-studio performance and more. No ballet experience is necessary.

New This Year!
summer camps. Here is a sneak peek at some of the exciting things that are cooking this year. From bringing real magic into the garden to becoming a Top Chef, these camps will get kiddos excited about all the different ways they can meaningfully connect with gardening, cooking, food and the natural world. With an emphasis on creativity, inquiry and fun, GV Farm to School summer camps highlight all the ways food can bring together art, science, cooking, exploration and more.
This summer, in addition to many of the popular programs from the past, two brand-new camps will be offered:
» Junior Top Chef for third- through fifth-graders, will focus on creating the next generation of certified gourmands. Through a partnership with Montana State University, this camp will be hosted in the teaching kitchen at Herrick Hall, giving elementary school students the same, unique, professional cooking experience that middle school Top Chefs get to have.
» Harvest Party for third- through fifth-graders will create a harvest hullabaloo, where campers will have a chance to grill and create local foods that can be harvested and eaten year-round in Montana.
Additionally this year, BOB (the mobile greenhouse bus) will be on site at camp. Campers will gain important gardening and plant science skills while learning in a magical and vibrant greenhouse space. Make sure to keep an eye out for BOB’s brand-new look, too.
Growing in more ways than one!
In 2022 campers worked hard all summer growing a giant zucchini—and they took first place in the Cashman Zucchini Festival Competition! Think your camper has what it takes to beat last year’s gardening season? GV Farm to School is looking to enter the competition again and they need help growing the largest zucchini or creating the best decorated zucchini.
With 12 camps over 10 weeks for kids from preschool through eighth grade, Gallatin Valley Farm to School offers plenty of options to choose from in 2023. By using new gardens along with familiar spaces, making new friends and seeing old ones, this year is going to be jampacked with excitement and fun. Want to have even more fun with food? Registration opens February 4, 2023. Learn more at GVFarmtoSchool.org/summer-camps.

Pet Pals Camp
Does your kiddo love dogs and cats?
Enroll them in Heart of the Valley’s Pet Pals Summer Camp. This seven-week summer day camp is for children ages 6 to 12 who love animals. Campers learn the importance of compassionate animal care through time with animals, games, crafts, humane education lessons and a wide variety of guest speakers. Each week children will have the opportunity to interact with a variety of animals including HOV’s shelter dogs and cats. The camp is held Monday through Friday with drop-off between 8:30-9 a.m. and pick-up between 3-3:30pm. Weekly tuition is $250; needbased scholarships are also available.
406Cirque
They don’t have to run away to join the circus!
Thanks to 406Cirque, your children don’t have to run away to join the circus.
When you enter the circus center you will see aerial silks, trapezes, unicycles, walking globes, stiltwalking, acting (especially comedy) and juggling all happening at once.
Circus camp is held at Petra Academy, where students train in a state-of-the-art venue with one of the largest theaters in Bozeman and have exclusive access to a private playground of more than 1.5 acres. In the mornings, students will rotate between a variety of classes that are focused on circus technique. In the afternoons, students may choose between creating their own circus act or doing free-choice activities.
There are many entry points into circus: For some students, it is the physical challenge. For others, it is the artistic component. Some appreciate the ensemble opportunities of studying circus, while others gravitate toward solo skills. Whether your child is an introvert or the class clown, they will be able to find a way to express their unique selves at 406Cirque.
Each Friday, students are invited to perform their original acts for their peers, culminating in a show at the end of a three-week session. Families and friends are encouraged to attend.
406Cirque camp is open to students ages 6 to 14. The range of student ages is one of the key pillars of the curriculum because two of the most important benefits of mixed-age learning are to reduce competition and foster mentorship. 406Cirque teaches students to encourage themselves and encourage others. Coaches teach that failure is an important component in any learning process, for failure is the proof that you’re trying something new. Coaches and advanced students model how to give positive feedback to novice students.
In the words of a parent, “406Cirque’s staff have contributed immensely to the growing confidence and maturity of my two kids. I have been blessed to witness them trying new things, working hard to achieve their goals and developing into leaders. All of this was possible thanks to the support of the nurturing, fun, kind and talented coaches. We are blessed to have the wonderful folks of 406Cirque here in Bozeman, guiding our children toward acceptance, hard work, inclusion and generosity.”
406Cirque was founded by Paúl Gomex in 2018. Celebrating its fifth season of circus and performing arts in the Gallatin Valley, 406Cirque brings education in the arts, as well as quality performances to the state of Montana. Some of 406Cirque partners include Raison d’etre Dance Project, Mountain Time Arts, Montana State University and Bozeman School District. For more information, please visit 406cirque.com.

5th Annual Women in Science
February 11, 2023
Saturday, February 11, Montana Science Center is hosting local professionals in science and technology careers at the Women in Science event celebrating International Women in Science Day. Montana Science Center supports diversity and equity in STEM careers through hands-on experiences in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). MSC frequently holds a Women in STEM Series, celebrating international days of recognition for women in STEM careers. Each of these celebrations features interactive activities for families with children of all ages.
MSC’s Women in STEM Series features women in our community building careers in a STEM field. The event will include graduate and undergraduate students at Montana State University and professionals in the Gallatin Valley. The series also features women who are part of the Science Center’s Women in STEM Advisory Group. The guest presenters at Women in STEM share their field of study through interactive, hands-on activities that relate to their careers. This event features women from Montana PBS, MSU Earth Sciences Department, MSU Optics and Photonics Society, and more.
“We look forward to partnering with women in STEM careers in our community because while the number of women graduating with degrees in STEM fields is growing, they still only make up about 25% of STEM graduates. We hope that visitors of all ages can see women in non-traditional careers and that this encourages them to consider career paths that they might have not considered before. Many children are curious about how real world problems are solved by professionals in our community, and the Women in STEM Series invites visitors to learn something new about companies, industries and available careers in our community,” says Montana Science Center Executive Director, Abby Turner.
The public is invited to this event, which will be held at the Montana Science Center: 2744 W. Main St. from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 11. The event is free with admission and included with a family membership. All questions can be directed to Russell Rosenberg, Engagement Coordinator for the Montana Science Center.

Montana Ballet Company (MBC) is delighted for the return of The Little Mermaid on Saturday, February 18 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, February 19 at 4 p.m. at the Willson Auditorium.
Premiering in 2019 to rave reviews – “breathtaking, visual heaven, a score beyond beauty…,” –this original work was inspired by the famous Hans Christian Andersen tale and reinterpreted by Artistic Director, Elizabeth DeFanti. Through an important journey, she realizes everything she needs for fulfillment is already within her.”
MBC Music Director, Stefan Stern, will once again conduct an outstanding group of musicians and vocalists to perform his original orchestral score.
Special guest artists from Pacific Northwest Ballet, Malena Ani and Kuu Sakuragi, will dance the principal roles of Mermaid Marina and the Prince joining Ilse Smith from Ballet Palm Beach and a superb cast of MBC dancers to bring The Little Mermaid to life.
With a captivating story, original choreography and orchestral score, magical sets, costumes, and theatrical elements, The Little Mermaid will enchant all audiences.

Tips for Parents During Respiratory Illness Season
WRITTEN BY BILLINGS CLINICRespiratory illness season is in full swing across Montana and Wyoming and, as these viruses circulate throughout the region, parents may have questions about what bug their kids have picked up, what to do if they’re ill and if or when to seek additional care.
Influenza, RSV and COVID-19, plus the common cold, are all circulating right now and many are at levels normally seen during seasonal peaks later in the winter. New cases continue to increase in Montana and Yellowstone County, and hospitalizations are on the rise.
Having the right information can help parents and their kids navigate being sick, whether it’s the sniffles, fever or any combination of symptoms.
Billings Clinic Pediatric Hospitalist Caitlin Wainscott, MD, says what we’re seeing for the 2022-2023 season is out of the ordinary so far.
“This season, we are seeing a large number of kids get sick from respiratory illnesses, and many are sick enough to require hospitalization,” she said. “Not only are more kids getting sick this year than in the last couple of years, but those who become ill are becoming more severely ill than we’ve seen in quite a while. Most of the pediatric patients filling our hospital beds currently are sick with RSV or influenza.”
Symptoms of these illnesses include, but are not limited to: fever or chills, cough, runny nose, congestion, body aches, fatigue, loss of appetite, sneezing and trouble breathing. Some illnesses can last more than a week and symptoms may come on in phases instead of all at once.
If your child becomes ill, in most cases, they’ll have mild to moderate symptoms and will require home care. This includes plenty of rest and fluids, cold/flu medications to manage
symptoms and avoiding others to prevent the further spread of illness. But some may require a visit to a medical provider and, in some cases, hospitalization.
“Most of the time, symptoms will likely last for several days and will require supportive care at home, but some might require a hospital stay if their breathing becomes impaired,” Dr. Wainscott said. “If your infant or toddler becomes ill, help them by using saline drops in their nose and a bulb suction or similar device to suction out their nose. This helps your child breathe better. Monitor their breathing at home. For all kids who are sick, you can treat their fever with antipyretics if necessary, and push fluids so they don’t get dehydrated.”
Knowing when to bring a sick child in to see a provider is also important.
“If your child is having to work hard to breathe, is breathing unusually fast or isn’t drinking well and having decreased urine output, bring them in for medical evaluation,” Dr. Wainscott said. “Of course, if you have any other concerns, like a sustained high fever, you can always bring them in as well.”
Local and federal health care officials also recommend vaccination, while not 100% effective, as the most effective way to prevent infection or serious illness from the flu or COVID-19. There is currently not a vaccine available for RSV.
If you or your family do need respiratory care, Billings Clinic Bozeman offers a wide array of services, from pediatric or primary care appointments to urgent same-day care. Featuring skilled, compassionate physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners working with nurses and support staff, the Billings Clinic Bozeman team works together with the resources and expertise of the region’s larges independent health system to meet patient needs. To schedule an appointment, please call (406) 898-1200. For more information, visit www. billingsclinicbozeman.com.
Ask Flora
WRITTEN BY FLORA MCCORMICKQ: “How do you get your partner more onboard with your parenting style?! I’m tired of disagreeing, but nothing I say seems to convince him to do it more my way.”
A:This is a great situation for us to address during the month of love because many marriages do get torn down by this very issue.
Danny Guspie, founder of Fathers’ Resources International, says that parenting disputes play a major role in about 20% of divorces among the dads who meet at his support groups. He says, “Guys get the feeling that their style of parenting isn’t really valued. For men who have been highly involved in their kids’ lives, that’s a huge challenge.”
So, how can you avoid this pitfall?
1. Be Supportive “On Stage” and Solve It “Back Stage” If you see your partner handling something in a way you don’t like, do NOT correct them in front of the kids. (Unless the child is being harmed physically. Then, of course, take any step you can to move yourself and the child into a safe space, disengaged with your partner).
Respect is a key component in relationships and one that I find is exceptionally important to many men. That’s why it’s best to not correct your partner in front of your kids (“On Stage”), and instead be a silent observer or walk away in moments when you disagree. This
helps ensure that your partner feels respected in their own relationship with the child, respected by you and not undermined. Plus, when kids see that you are disagreeing, it draws attention away from the behavior being corrected, and they may be tempted to cause more of that divide between you and your partner. You may even notice them coming to you to “tattle” on what the other parent said or did.
Instead, walk away, take a deep breath, let the moment play out and problemsolve with your partner behind closed doors. I find the best recipe for sharing your thoughts is: “I feel (feeling word), when (situation), and I’d like or rather (new thing you would like).” OR “I would like us to be more on the same page with how we respond when (describe the behavior the child did). What can we agree on that would be more kind and firm at the same time?
2. Realize No One is Right
If you are frustrated with your partner’s parenting style, it’s easy to just point the finger that THEY need to change. However, in my experience, I have found that most partners lean heavily in one direction (i.e. being strict/stern) when they feel the other person is being too soft. There is a natural equilibrium that our relationships are fighting for. So, the more you lean one way, the more likely it is contributing to your partner continuing to lean the opposite way.
- Heather
Take a step back and take a full look at whether you may need to come more to the center of kindness and firmness at the SAME time. Time and again I see that when one partner moves to center, it naturally brings the other partner more to center as well. If you aren’t sure what that really looks like – to be kind and firm at the SAME time – let’s talk!
3. Know That Kids Can Adapt to Differences
The main goal of commonality is to be in agreement about your family rules and expectations. Outside of that, kids can adjust to different styles of communication and different forms of correction within different relationships. You have probably already seen that to be the case at school. Different teachers have different ways of motivating students and redirecting behavior, and most children adjust to that.
So, if your partner wants to sing five songs for bedtime and you just want to tell them a story – the kids can adjust to that difference. Or if you want your child to take space to calm down when they are upset and your partner wants to try a 30 second silent hug instead, the kids can adjust to that difference.
Again, if your family needs help establishing a fuller toolbelt for kind and firm parenting, reach out to one of the many experts in our community who offer classes, coaching or family counseling.

Hello, Rabbits
WRITTEN BY BLAIR FJESETHFrom January 22 of this year to February 9, 2024 we will be in the Chinese Zodiac year of the Rabbit. If you are expecting (or not yet expecting) a baby to be born this year, hang on to this column as a fun guide to your new baby. As a refresher, the Chinese Zodiac is a lunar calendar that repeats on a 12-year cycle. The calendar ascribes an animal to each year within the cycle and is used to help assign personality traits and the general vibe for the year.
This is always one of my favorite columns to write because I, like many of you, enjoy daydreaming about what the kids being born this year will be like. A few years back, I wrote about the year of the dog without even knowing that I would be welcoming a baby of my own later that year. And while I don’t live and die by the zodiac characteristics, my daughter does resemble much of what I wrote about in that column.
Babies born this year will be (according to the zodiac) rabbits, which couldn’t be more different than the year we are just coming off of, the year of the Tiger. Astrologers say we can expect a significant change of pace to a more peaceful and gentle year (thank goodness).
If you are in fact having a baby this year, you won the lotto, as the rabbit is said to be the luckiest of all 12 zodiac animals. They symbolize peace, knowledge, artistic creativity and beauty.
Other rabbits in the club include: Frank Sinatra, Albert Einstein, Michael Jordan and, for you World Cup fans, Leo Messi.
Looking for a nursery color? Look no further, as the rabbit’s lucky colors are red, blue, pink and purple. According to astrologers, the colors to avoid for these babies are dark brown, dark yellow or different shades of white.
Your little rabbit, if the zodiac rings true, will be sweet by nature, a good listener and charismatic. Because of this, they are sought after as trusted confidants and advisors.
Whether you are having a baby this year or not, the vibe for 2023 is predicted to be a year of hope, peace, prosperity and longevity. I think we can all agree we are ready for a year of just that.
