The Art of Creation at the Berman Museum By Adam Crugnale he term “creation” brings to mind images of a young earth. A wild garden inhabited by a man, a woman and a snake. Or perhaps an older, bearded gentleman comes to mind, dressed in robes and stretching out his hand to extend life to man. In short, the Bible. Adorning the sleek, modern halls of the Berman Museum, located on site at Ursinus College in Collegeville, creation is a definite theme among the pieces in the permanent collection, which has grown to more than 4,000 objects. These works of art do not give rise to creation in a religious sense so much as in three major forms of creation: art, identity and spirituality. “The students selected

I had the opportunity during my visit to listen, briefly, to one of these discussions
between Nathan and three other students. They examined a piece of art and, prompted by Simasek, they began voicing ideas as to its origins and possible meanings. “We are more relevant to our campus community with curricular connections and in engaging students to work at the museum as volunteers,” said Hanover. “They learn to talk about and share ways to understand and appreciate the great variety of art we showcase here.” The building is small, but this belies the breadth of creation within its walls.

Sleek SEPTA Silverliners set for takeoff
SEPTA’s new Silverliner V.
By Diane M. Fiske he square boxy SEPTA rail cars used for decades on the Philadelphia and regional railroads are now being joined by a sleek new partner that is modernizing the design of commuting — despite a few barbs about the change, including a few passenger comments that they look like subway cars. Called the Silverliner V, the new cars were introduced last year after the transit agency signed a contract in 2006 with Hyundai Rotem of South Korea in a joint venture. According to David Casper, a SEPTA engineer, who is director of the new vehicle procurement, 120 new cars were purchased to replace 73 cars that were purchased as early as the 1960s, many of them manu-
T
factured by the Budd Corporation, boasting the brownish tan plastic seats. Casper said that the new trains, when the order is complete, will add about 4,000 new seats to the transit system at a cost of about $274 million. SEPTA has called all its commuter trains “Silverliners” — from the old Budd trains, which were Silverliners I and II, to the new editions, which are Silverliner V’s. Although the Hyundai Rotem firm never designed rail cars before, the design, Casper said, was the result of consultations with SEPTA, with focus groups and with new Americans for Disability requirements experts. The new trains have wider windows, access to the platforms with more ease, wider aisles and an
announcement system that fulfills ADA requirements so that those who have hearing problems will be able to hear the names of stations and destinations that the train is approaching. Those who want to read or doze off during their commute may have a problem with the announcement system. It is the announcing problem that Casper said needs some fine-tuning and that had received more comments than any other new feature. The system sends a rather shrill announcement in a female voice that tells riders the next stop that is being approached, often mispronouncing words like Tulpehocken or Wissahickon, and repeating an annoying “watch the gap” at each stop. “It is a new system,”
Casper said. “The system needs to be adjusted, and I must say that if there is one aspect of the new trains that has received comments, it is this one and we are still working with it.” Matthew Mitchell, chairman of the Delaware Valley Association of Rail Passengers, a rail advocacy group that has 600 members, said that because the design is new, many people find change hard to take. “You get used to your particular conductor if you take the same train every day and you get used to the way this conductor announces the quiet car or other features,” he said. Mitchell said that the main problem with the vocal announcement is that it is not a human voice that is mispronouncing all those stations. “It is a synthesized voice,
which may be why many people find it so irritating,” he said. The new Silverliner cars will offer nine fewer seats on each car, or 109 new seats per car in the 85-footlong car. According to Casper, the new Silverliners have a system of producing energy through the braking system that is ecologically beneficial to the environment. Casper also said that the new designed cars did not arrive in their full design from South Korea. The shells were produced in South Korea but then shipped by cargo ship to the Packer Avenue Marine Terminal in South Philadelphia, where they were then were fitted with SEPTA features and assembled at the Hyundai Rotem facility. Mitchell said that
although there have not been major problems since the Silverliner V’s have begun to be introduced, he would like to see the older cars retained in case there are problems and some of the new cars would have to be taken off the rails for repairs. “That is what happened with the Acella Express trains, which had brake problems and had to be removed from service in 2002 and 2005,” he said. About two-thirds of the order of Silverliner V’s is now in service. Casper emphasized that it is important for people to realize that much of the design of the Silverliner V is the result of ideas expressed during many focus group meetings. “We had to be extraordinarily thorough in the design process,” Casper said recently. “The rail cars [the new Silverliners] had to be designed with durability, longevity, safety and comfort in mind.” For those who say that the new cars resemble subway cars, both Casper and Mitchell answer that change, especially in design, takes a long time to accept and that those older plastic-seated Budd cars from the 1960s definitely had their day. — This is a monthly column about architecture, urban design and city planning. Elaine Kurtz a ‘Force of Nature’ he artistic accomplishments of the late Elaine Kurtz glow with extraordinarily evocative brilliance. They appear to have been assembled at the summit of distinguished aesthetic resourcefulness where such giants as Josef Albers, Ad Reinhardt, Viktor Vasarely and Mark Rothko also practiced their craft. The outcome of intense and articulate inventive effort, her masterworks are the epitome of impeccable sensitivity. All of these words translate into striking compositions, given shape optically, in a retrospective solo offering at the Woodmere Art Museum in Chestnut Hill. It will remain there until April 22. An alumna of the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art, now called the University of the Arts, Kurtz devoted her career as a painter to an idiom of abstract form with an integrity undeniably its own. Her feeling for crisp shapes integrated with sound precision and a meticulous sense of arrangement resonates on a beholder’s retina in artworks marked by a profoundly rigorous spirit of sublimely inspired order. At the same time, one observes, across the years, a continuous quest for bringing a richness of texture and a controlled essence of color to realization in a uniquely original oeuvre. The exhibition is titled “Force of Nature.” However, visitors should not expect to see either bland or obvious representations of natural subjects or places. Kurtz was far too sophisticated and keenly intelligent an artist to simplistically focus on making such stereotypical and banal examples of kitsch. Instead, she concentrated on constructing artworks that are bold and daring realities unto themselves. Thus, they are each composites with a unique eloquence, not dreary vignettes of natural phenomena best left to serve as decorations for slickly printed calendars. Deeply moving artworks, they are each whole and sufficient in their own being, with a structure and an identity true to an individual aesthetic existence. The exhibition illuminates the path traveled by Kurtz when she was initially drawn in the 1970s to an approach using processes of perceptu-

al counter-play, involving chromatic interactions of hue and tone, often referred to as op art. In due course, her focus of concentration moved to what she called Alluvial painting in the 1990s. Some commentators refer to this latter style with such terms as minimalism and cool art. Generally, these works function as surfaces rich with deposits of paint, sand, mica, mud and quartz. Their most significant feature is the presence of thick layers of these earthy materials together with the highlights and dark passages they cast. In a curiously fascinating manner, they tend to communicate awesome, nondenominational and non-material sensations and suggestions of mystical ascendency. Most important of all, they radiate energies that are invisible but amazingly forceful as a consequence of their singularly primal presence. Bringing the Alluvials to fulfillment, Kurtz appears to have held nothing back. Tossing uncertainty and hesitancy aside, she poured herself into her work with total commitment. Such a formidable mode of creative attack was destined to yield an appropriately all-consuming dynamics of design. The ultimate outcome of this effort is a heritage of ecstatic triumph, given expression with elements of vision that no amount of verbal effort can describe as well. Dr. William Valerio, the director of the Woodmere Museum, has said of her dedication to her work, “An artist’s legacy can be measured by its continuing relevance to subsequent generations of artists and their ongoing conversations about the nature of art.” Clearly, the residue of Kurtz’s grammar of expression continues to be relevant today. Even in her own lifetime, there was considerable exchange in the marketplace of aesthetic ideas and the efforts of such notable artists
