Jay Musler headlines SCC’s International Flameworking Conference CARNEYS POINT, N.J.— World-renowned glass artist Jay Musler will offer insights into his unique craft at Salem Community College’s annual International Flameworking Conference, FridaySunday, March 16-19. The conference also will include demonstrations by Christopher McElroy of Richmond, Va., Margaret Neher of Ithaca, N.Y. and Jeri Warhaftig of West Orange; a talk by Jesse Kohl of Middlesex; a panel discussion moderated by Amber Cowan of Philadelphia; and a webcast presented live from Eureka, Calif. by Garth Johnson. As featured artist, Musler will give a slide presentation Friday evening at 7 p.m. in the Sol and Jean Davidow Performing Arts Theatre. Titled “Why? Why Not?,â€? the presentation is free and open to the public. A reception in Musler’s honor will follow in the Davidow Hall lobby. Musler has been recognized as an innovative force in glass art for over three decades, having twice been awarded fellowships by the National Endowment for the Arts. The Oakland, Calif. resident studied with Marvin Lipofsky at the California College of Arts and Crafts in the late 1960s, and worked as a glassblower for nearly a decade. His work is exhibited at many museums, including the Corning Museum of Glass; The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; the Renwick Gallery of American Art at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C.; the MusĂŠe de Design et d’Arts AppliquĂŠs Contemporains in Lausanne, Switzerland; the United States Embassy in Istanbul, Turkey; and the Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art in Sapporo, Japan. Musler says his work -- also found at major glass galleries in the U.S. -- is about “constructing patterns. I see things in patterns. Patterns are everywhere; in nature, landscapes, and architecture. You can pull patterns out of anything.â€? Since its inception in 2001, the International Flameworking Conference has promoted excellence in flameworking through artist demonstrations and scholarly presentations. Paul J. Stankard, a world-renowned glass artist and SCC distinguished alumnus, chairs the event. For more information, visit www.salemcc.edu.

They will feel like they are walking across the beaches, rainforests and mountains of the Hawaiian islands.” Pele’s Garden will include myriad flower and plant displays. It will also be a center for telling the story of the legendary founding of the Hawaiian islands, which, according to myth, says that the islands resulted from confrontations between Pele, the fire goddess, and her sister. Developing the architectural structure of the show has been a work of Radin, Lemheney and Jack Doyle of Scenery First of Sharon Hill for about 18 months. According to Radin, who has a background in theatrical set design, the base of the arch is made up of white maplewood supported by metal rods. A series of wires supports the waving structures. Building Hawaii took a combination of wood, wire, foam and a spray material that magically created rocks, tunnels and mountains out of foam. “For the garden where Pele and her sister fought and created the islands, we built the structure out of wood and then sprayed the wood with a foam material to create the shapes of rocks,” Radin said. “When the foam dried, it was then painted to look like volcanic rocks, mountains or

to create other effects.” The result will be a garden where performers from Hawaii will conjure towering flames to re-create the myth of the islands’ founding by Pele, their fire goddess. The area will be surrounded with towering palms, bamboo, green walls and the effect of a Hawaiian rain forest. The combination of the motion graphics and the waterfalls, lava flows and sculptural forms will produce a show that will be traditional and 21st-century at the same time. As an added architectural attraction, the brochures from the show promise easier navigation among the hundreds of exhibits in a “redesigned show floor plan.” “Whether you are a show veteran or a first-timer, you have never seen a show like this,” said Drew Becher, Philadelphia Horticulture Society president, who took over the reins of the organization last year after legendary leader Jane Pepper retired. — This is monthly column about architecture, urban planning and landscape design. Art Matters onsider the fluidly drifting nature of time. Unrelentingly, like a river without end, it moves on and on. By contrast, pictures made with a still-camera are an entirely different reality. Loaded with film and guided by a person, the camera can stop the flow of time and freeze-frame the appearance of whatever is seen by the light-sensitive emulsion inside the instrument. The great French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson called this process “capturing the decisive moment.” As compared with cinema, still-photography makes it possible for a passing human perception to become a permanent record, visually fixed in place. Today, photographic images in general are found everywhere. Maybe that’s why we often take them, and what may be significant about them, for granted. This happens even though on a deeper level we know there are real differences between commonplace snapshots, professionally made illustrations for advertising and editorial purposes and examples that are so extraordinary that they serve as fine art with something to say that truly matters in the overall scheme of things. At this time and until May 15, 2012, the Philadelphia Museum of Art is presenting a marvelous survey of 35mm photography with examples drawn from its own permanent holdings. Now that digital photography is being employed more and more, it’s a good time to examine what was exceptional and distinctive about the widespread use of pictures made with the 35 mm genre. The show is on view in the Julien Levy Gallery of the Perelman Building at 26th Street and Benjamin Franklin Parkway, across from the familiar landmark museum structure on

was invented in Germany. Soon, it was in use far and wide. These small cameras were light in weight and easy to handle. By comparison, big, box-like equipment demanded much time and concentration from the photographer that might otherwise have been given to actually taking a picture. In addition, the small 35mm negatives could then be easily enlarged in the processing laboratory to whatever size was appropriate for exhibition purposes. Memorable early selections in the exhibition include fascinating prints by such eminent European-born masters of the medium as André Kertesz, Lazlo Moholy-Nagy and Lisette Model. An especially interesting contact test strip of 35mm portraits of the great American photographer Alfred Steiglitz by Cartier-Bresson is included in the show. Other highly regarded artists who created the various works on view are Walker Evans, Mary Ellen Mark, Lee Friedlander, Helen Levitt, Gary Winogrand, W. Eugene Smith and Robert Capa. Whether their work demonstrates social commentary, photojournalism or souvenirs of foreign travel, they all evidence a talent for giving birth to images that are rare and memorable.

Exhibit Info: Dan Snow A Snow Dusting of Imaginary Snow Opens: First Friday March 2nd 2012 6:00-9:00 Artist Dan Snow’s Comments On His Exhibit “A Dusting Of Imaginary Snow” In Ecclesiastes it is written, “Wherefore I perceive that there is nothing better than that a man should rejoice in his own works”. The works that make up this latest exhibition are first and foremost pleasing to me. They are the answers to questions, the solutions to puzzles, the portals to an alternative reality. Things are not always what they seem. All objects either man made or natural, have a specific form and function. How they are perceived, depends on who sees them and under what circumstances. Worn out, uninteresting or unattractive objects can be completely transformed by being removed from their usual context. Thus altered, they can be combined with other “reconstituted” objects to plant an idea, evoke an emotion or tell a new story. Once the viewer has been awakened to a new way of looking at old things, they are freed-up to experience the thrill of exploration and discovery.

Exhibit Info: Judith Kniffin, Detritus: Beauty in Decay. Devon – To honor Earth Day, artist, Judith Kniffin will show her paintings in the Fireside Gallery. The paintings will be on display March 17 - April 29. “Detritus: Beauty in Decay,” is a series of small oil paintings portraying matter in decay: old buildings, rusted metal, discarded glass and paper, organic growth in decomposition. Colors, formerly sharp and primary, have gone soft and askance. Rotting surfaces nourish new life. Edges fold in on themselves; shapes contort. Embodied here is a very different kind of beauty—but arresting, nonetheless.

Artists Talk and Demo Saturday March 17th from 2-4pm In conjunction with FiberPhiladelphia 2012, Nichols Berg is pleased to announce its March exhibition featuring the work of Marie Elcin, Melissa Maddonni Haims, Rachel Udell and the late Maggie Brosnan. This exhibit, curated by Ms. Haims, celebrates the bonds between women and fiber arts; both traditional and non-traditional. Brosnan, an artist from California, who passed away in the mid 1990’s, worked on the outskirts of the societal norm during her art-making period (from the 1960’s until her death in 1994) dyeing her own wool and spinning her own yarns to create fantastical capes and creations, such as a singular, knitted, right hand glove. Elcin, Haims and Udell are all Philadelphia based fiber artists who embrace the maternal aspects of fiber arts in theme, material and technique. Embroidery, soft sculpture and non-traditional textiles will be highlighted in this show. Additionally, in the gallery’s mezzanine, there will be a collection of weavings by Midwestern artists Pamela Davis, Anita Monsebroten, and Judy Ness.

_ SOUTH PHILADELPHIA. AMERICAN SWEDISH HISTORICAL MUSEUM 1900 Pattison Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19145. P: 215-389-1776. Fax: 215-3897701. www.americanswedish.com Exhibit info: Forged Sculpture of the Steneby Collection, Featuring the work of Albert Paley Opening March 11th, 2012 at 4pm On view March 11th thru June 24th, 2012 This exhibit features metal work by Swedish-American sculptor, Albert Paley. A native of Philadelphia and a graduate of Temple University’s Tyler School of Art, Paley is a long-standing international leader in the metal/sculptor arena where he is recognized for developing blacksmithing into the context of public art and site-specific commissions. One of his large steel creations, Synergy (1987), is located right here in Philadelphia at 18th and Spring Garden Streets. This exciting exhibition opportunity is the result of collaboration between the Steneby School of Art and Design in Dals Långed, Sweden, the Röhsska Museum of Fashion, Design and Decorative Arts in Gothenburg, Sweden and the American Swedish Historical Museum. In the fall of 2011, Steneby invited Paley to be an artist-in-residence, working alongside students experimenting with the endless possibilities of forging metal. For two intense weeks of working, experimenting, teaching and toiling, Paley brought his blacksmithing tradition to a whole new level. The result is 12 stunning sculptures, each one different in size, shape, form, and texture, and yet they are united by their material and by the vision and talent of their manipulator. Please join us as we unveil these remarkable works, along with a presentation by the artist himself. The opening on March 11th begins at 4pm and will include refreshments. Free with museum admission. Visit our website americanswedish.org or call (215) 3891776 for more information. The American Swedish Historical Museum is located in scenic FDR Park at 1900 Pattison Avenue in South Philadelphia near the Sports Complex. Plenty of free parking is available. For those taking public transportation, the Broad Street Subway’s AT&T/Pattison Avenue stop is within walking distance or SEPTA’s Route 17 (Naval Base) can bring you right to the Museum.
