May brings with it a ton of smiles and tears as families gather to watch their high school seniors pick up their diplomas and take their first steps into the next chapter of their lives. Until recently, this rite of passage was more of a dead-end for Moore's special education students. An absence of programs they could become involved in meant they were left treading water. In this month's issue of the Moore Monthly, you'll meet a pair of Moore mothers who created The Sparrow Project to fill that hole for special education students. The unique and fulfilling program has become so popular that they're considering ways to grow it in the future.

MOORE EMBRACES ITS MOST SPECIAL CITIZENS

J

ust over six years ago, Allison Richey wondered what might be next for her special needs daughter, Casey. This was after Casey had graduated from Moore Public Schools a few years before. "From the top down, Moore Public Schools has this amazing commitment to our kids," said Richey. "She and I had been home about three years with not many options for her to follow after graduation." Richey had been attending a Bible study for mothers of children with special needs, and an idea formed in her mind. "I got a pretty good nudge from my husband that got me moving on the idea of creating something for Casey and kids like her that would provide social interaction along with cool, age-appropriate activities," said Richey. It didn't take long for Richey to connect with Marilyn DiSalvatore, who was also wondering what to do for her two daughters, one on the autism spectrum and one with Down Syndrome.

8 | MOORE MONTHLY | MAY 2022

"When these kids graduate high school, it's like they hit a brick wall," said DiSalvatore. "There are so many things for them to get involved in during school, but once they're out, there's not enough support and services for them socially." Together, the two mothers came up with a simple idea to provide something that could fill that space. The Sparrow Project, a non-profit, faith-based organization, was born with roots in a passage from Matthew 10:

"Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father's care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows."

"We launched our first class in April 2016," said Richey. "We had four young ladies in the group, and now we are here in April of 2022, and we have around 50 involved in the program." DiSalvatore says it didn't take long for parents to recognize the value of this new program in their children's lives as well. "In our conversations with people, they all really understood what our kids were going through," said DiSalvatore. "The supported social interaction we

MAY 2022 | MOORE MONTHLY | 9

were able to provide through The Sparrow Project profoundly met their needs." So profound that the organization found it snowballing. Fortunately, there was plenty of support from the Moore community.

"We started in our homes," said DiSalvatore, "Then we went to St. Andrew's Church and outgrew that. So, we went to MACU and outgrew that as well." The Sparrow Project spent some time in a shared space at Southmoore High School before finally settling in a dedicated space at Southridge High School. Richey relied on her background in adult education and personal enrichment classes to put together a plan that would work for "The Sparrows," as they affectionately came to be called. Those activities are nothing like the gluing-macaroni-to-a-piece-of-paper projects some folks imagine. "We follow the school calendar in our planning," said Richey. "In terms of our class schedule, we meet every Wednesday and Friday from 10:00 a.m. until noon. We do a wide variety of things including fitness, social interaction, gardening, bowling, entertainment, and some pretty elaborate crafts projects and activities."

10 | MOORE MONTHLY | MAY 2022

It also includes regular trips over to the Moore Public Schools Administration building to work shredding documents. Those trips and other activities have led The Sparrow Project's leadership team to begin meeting and planning strategically about where the organization goes. "At first, job skills weren't really a big thing for us," said DiSalvatore. "Now we're beginning to see that maybe it can be. There's also the idea of partnering with people in Moore to help integrate our kids into the community in different ways." In the meantime, The Sparrow Project is accomplishing beautiful things in the lives of those it serves. Beth Kidd's son, Will, is one of those people. Kidd originally moved to Moore for the special education programs in the schools. Those programs were fantastic, as was the inclusion and acceptance the family experienced in Moore. She says Will graduated in 2018 and quickly experienced the "brick wall" that DiSalvatore mentioned. Fortunately, The Sparrow Project was there to fill in the gap. "He's very sociable, which gives him something he really gets excited about," said Kidd. "Not only

does he get to see some of his old friends from school, but he also meets new friends, which keeps them active in the community. He's excited about their upcoming trip to the OKC Dodgers game." As important as The Sparrow Project is for The Sparrows, it also provides some much-needed help to the parents of The Sparrows. "When your special needs children become adults, it can become a bit overwhelming at times," said Kidd. "You're still the provider, but many adults also have to work. So, Sparrows allows parents to have one or two hours to themselves." To provide various programs to The Sparrows, volunteers have become an essential element. Donna Burruss recently retired from Moore Public Schools, where she worked with special education students. She says it was an easy decision for her and her husband, former Westmoore athletic director John Burruss, to sign up as volunteers with The Sparrow Project.

"I understood that these students were with us in school until they were 22 years old," said Burruss. "And then after that, unless they could hold down some kind of part-time job or something, there was really nothing else for them to do after school was over." Burruss says that the most important message she would

MAY 2022 | MOORE MONTHLY | 11

"We couldn't do this without the community," said Richey. "Honestly, I can't imagine another community embracing us the way Moore has since we started." DiSalvatore adds, "They really care about these kids and support us so well, especially our friends at Moore Public Schools. They're committed to seeing our kids out in the community after graduation, having rich relationships with others in the community." It's no stretch of the imagination to see the joy and excitement The Sparrow Project has brought to this very deserving group in Moore. It brings to mind the words of the classic hymn by Civilian D. Martin: send to folks in the Moore community about volunteering with The Sparrow Project is that you get so much more than you give. "We benefit because these kids bring us so much joy," said Burruss. "They are wonderful to work with. They love us unconditionally and share themselves with us on such a rich and deep level. I would encourage people to check into volunteering with them." Richey says there is a cost for those participating in The Sparrow Project but wants to be sure everyone understands that cost won't stand in the way of those who can't afford to pay. "We charge anywhere from five to $15 per class, but we don't turn anybody away," said Richey. "That covers about 50% of the program or the class. And then we supplement the rest of it." Richey and DiSalvatore both say that many in the Moore community have helped make The Sparrow Project a success so far, some by volunteering and others by supporting the organization in various ways.

Lowering Your Food Bill

T

here are many causes for our budgets to be tight right now. One area is our food budget. Once a month, shopping is a far less expensive way to purchase food. When trying to save money, your diet may look slightly different from what it usually does. Remember, your goal is to eat as well as possible within a strict budget. Here's how to navigate the basic food groups so you will know what to look for and how to trim your costs while you are shopping.

CANNED TUNA - This pantry staple of- salads, soup, or casseroles. You don't need fers a convenient (and cheap) way to add to get fancy. Just go with the plain, ordinary much-needed protein. Think Tuna Casserole! green heads of cabbage. PRODUCE: APPLES - If the price is reasonable, grab a large bag of apples. Keep them refrigerated to extend their life as long as possible, and you can always turn any extras into homemade applesauce.

FROZEN VEGETABLES - When they are on sale, you can sometimes get bags of frozen vegetables for as little as a dollar each. If you have freezer space, this is the way to go. Great ones to have on hand are peas and carrots, green peas, corn, cauliflower, broccoli, chopped spinach, Brussels sprouts, mixed CANNED FRUIT - Get fruit canned in the vegetables, and green beans. PROTEIN: MEAT - When your budget is super tight, don't expect meat to be the main dish. You don't have to go vegetarian, but calorie for calorie, meat is very expensive. Use less meat than you usually would and make it an ingredient instead of the star of the meal. Go with less expensive cuts, such as stew beef, 70/30 ground beef, chicken quarters, and chicken thighs. You can also buy an inexpensive beef roast and an inexpensive whole chicken that will get you through several meals if carefully CARROTS - Pick up one of those huge bags portioned. of grown-up carrots, peel them, and keep them in a bowl of water in your fridge for yummy and EGGS - are a very inexpensive and healthy healthy, snacking. source of protein. BREAD, PASTA, and RICE Find a quick healthy bread recipe that you like online and make your bread. Flour and water are relatively cheap. Purchase Pasta in different shapes and sizes and keep them in jars on a shelf. You can purchase rice in substantial quantities at your local grocery store. Doing your shopping once per month will help keep you from making those impulse purchases that always seem to hop into the cart. It will be easier to keep track of your spending if it is all in one big trip. With each trip, you will predict what you need to run your household for an entire month, so this gets easier each month. With this kind of planning, you can cut your future grocery bills by buying only what you need to get you through the month. Enjoy the process!

Korean POW Honored in Moore On November 25, 1950, Private First Class Charles Selby was captured during the Korean War. Selby was held in a prisoner camp until August 24, 1953. The 93-year-old veteran was honored at the Grace Pointe Living Center on April 22, 2022, as part of the National Prisoner of War Recognition Day. Selby says he joined the Army in 1948 after talking to one of his high school friends. “We were talking, and he said, ‘I’d join the military if I just had someone to join along with me,’” said Selby. “I told him I’d join with him, and we went to enlist. We were going to join the Air Force, but the line was plumb down the hall and around the corner. So, we went around the corner, and there was no line for the Army sign-up.” After basic training, Selby went to Korea, where he served as a platoon aid man (Medical Corp) with the 38th Regiment of the 2nd Infantry Division. Just a month after returning to Korea, he was captured by the Chinese Army. After recovering from those wounds, he was wounded in combat and was sent back to combat in Korea. “We were just overrun in the field,” said Selby. “They took us to this camp, and I can tell you that those Chinese soldiers were not friendly people. We were forced to march from the 38th Parallel to the Yellow River with not much to eat.” LICENSE: 038828 051757 02188 TACLA0085780E 149509

When Selby and his fellow POWs did get food, it was typically hard grains like cracked corn, millet, and soybeans. They also endured sickness, hunger, interrogations, and extremely harsh and cold conditions. After his release, Selby was discharged from the ArmyArmy in 1953 but decided to return in 1957. “I’m not gonna lie, I really liked the paycheck and the medical care we got,” said Selby. “but I also had some great friendships there.” When he re-enlisted, Selby ended up as an airplane mechanic. “This company commander saw me working on a helicopter and wanted to know if I had any mechanical experience,” said Selby. “I told him I worked on my car back home, and it took him just a few minutes to get me transferred to mechanic’s school.” Selby rose from mechanic to crew chief in about 18-months, working on a wide variety of aircraft throughout his 22-year career in the ArmyArmy. That includes two tours in Europe and two combat tours in Vietnam. Selby retired as a Sergeant First Class in 1974. His military decorations include a Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Prisoner of War Medal. After leaving the Army he worked for the U.S. Post Office and a concrete casting company until he retired. “Serving my country is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made,” said Selby. “I don’t see why anyone would ever refuse the chance to do that. We have such a great country.”

BACKGROUND: I grew up in Sterling, Oklahoma. We had 36 people in our graduating class, which was actually the largest graduating class in Sterling High School history at the time. After high school I went to Cameron University in Lawton and was planning on becoming a coach. But then I went to a citizen’s police academy, and it hit me that being a police officer was something I was really interested in pursuing. When I turned 21,I put my name in the hat and applied with the Lawton Police Department, just to kind of get FAMILY: My priorities are God, my family, and my name out there. I ended up getting the job, so work. My wife and I have a two-year-old son that’s where it all started for me. named Lincoln and he is so full of energy. He really gives us a run for our money. So, between REASON FOR BECOMING A POLICE OFFICER: The taking my wife out on dates and still trying to go first thing I remember making me interested in becom- to the park with my son and just do fun things ing a police officer was that it was such a detailed and with him, my life is pretty fulfilling.

LIFE AS A POLICE OFFICER: We are blessed with a great community in Moore, with great citizens. I think that most of them understand that we’re there to help them, not to make life miserable for them. Even when we give tickets, we’re doing our best to be fair. People tend to think of what we do as good versus bad, but it’s really not that way for me. The challenging part is understanding that we’re all people. We all make mistakes. It’s not always a case of good guy versus bad guy. There are a lot of times when both people are good, but someone just makes a mistake. So, you’re just doing your best to help bring resolutions to some of these situations. There’s just so much about the job that continues to hold my attention, so I think I’m just trying to put in for things that interest me and see how it all falls out.

hands-on experience with a lot of variety and different ways you could go. Of course, I thought things like the SWAT team was cool, but I also liked the detective work and how that was more of a chess game. There were so many aspects to the job and where it could take you. But even deeper than that I had this feeling that I could really give back to the community. I do enjoy talking to and helping people, especially when you are able to help those who have been through a terrible experience and can’t really help themselves. So, there’s this desire to give my best service, to help people find the resolution they’re needing to difficult situations, and a passion to protect.

Business Building Blocks Economic Development Can you give us an overview of why economic development is important to MNTC?

Tim Burg Economic Developer

Burg joined the MNTC staff in August of 2021. Prior to that he was the Economic Developer for Shawnee Forward, a business alliance of the Shawnee Economic Foundation and the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce. Burg has decades of experience working with municipalities in business, economic development, and workforce development.

For me, a Career Tech serves as the connecting point for economic development activities in a region or the district they serve. Economic development can often be described as a “If not but for” process, meaning if someone doesn’t act good things might not take place. In the business of economic development, one small step can lead to an outstanding opportunity. At MNTC we are blessed to serve such a wide spectrum of individuals, businesses, municipal and county organizations, along with supporting other educational institutions, that it only makes sense to share what we can offer to all those groups. Our school is perfectly suited to be a part of the ongoing economic growth of this district and the larger metro area. The “why

MNTC can offer customized training in a plethora of skills development areas. We can serve as a business advocate to companies who have been here for a long time or those who are looking for a great place to locate. We have workforce solutions, ideas, and resources that others may not know about, but that we are willing to share. We are allies to a wide group of partners and associates that want to accomplish similar goals, and who realize that by working together we can accomplish a lot of wonderful things. Being a business advocate and resource is one of the reasons we come to work each day. It’s an honor to be able to do this kind of work.

How can MNTC's focus economic development impact the people who live and work in Cleveland County? The easiest way for me to explain what I’m tasked to do at MNTC is to share three main goals. #1: Assist in the creation and retention of wealth producing jobs for our area. #2: To attract capital investment to the region. #3: And to raise the per capita income of the average resident of Cleveland County.

The set fundraising month is February, but MPS students often begin fundraising activities for their interschool competition when school starts in August. MPS has approximately 24,500 students and 2,700 staff members throughout 35 school sites. Dr. Robert Romines said, “We set a fundraising goal this year that our collective student body completely blew away. I am so proud of all our students and staff who worked hard to make this funding happen for our nonprofits. I’m also humbled by the groundwork we’ll now be able to accomplish through the MPS Foundation and Bridges for our homeless and shelter-insecure population. We can begin a program to care for our own students, right here in Moore.”

MUSEUM OF ART 555 Elm Avenue, Norman, OK 405-325-3272 The University of Oklahoma’s Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art is one of the finest university art museums in the United States. Strengths of the more than 20,000 object permanent collection (including the approx. 3,300-object Eugene B. Adkins Collection and the more than 4,500-object James T. Bialac Native American Art Collection) are the Weitzenhoffer Collection of French Impressionism, 20th century American painting and sculpture, traditional and contemporary Native American art, art of the Southwest, ceramics, photography, contemporary art, Asian art and graphics from the 16th century to the present. Temporary exhibitions are mounted throughout the year that explore the art of various periods and cultures.

EXHIBITIONS Ascendant Webinar Through August 14 The decades following World War II were rife with change on a global scale, no less so for Native American artists at the University of Oklahoma. For this exhibition we consider the Native art students enrolled at OU from 1946-1954 as the “second generation” of Native artists in the legacy of the University, following in the footsteps of the Kiowa Six. These students came to OU at a time of political, social, and personal transformation. Amid such pressures as the Indian Termination Act, relocation programs, the rise of student civil-rights movements, and eventually the Red Power movement (which has roots at OU), this generation of Native artists made strides toward self-determination. Artists turned to ancestral philosophies of art-making to represent their identity, celebrate heritage, and assert individual artistic agency. During this period Native art was becoming increasingly accepted as “fine art.” Institutions like the Philbrook Indian Annual and various schools and art markets were developing toward Indian self-expression and identification—in part because of the influence of the artists who were trained at OU during the postwar decades. This generation of artists is notable as teachers and leaders, whose resounding influence on the vast field of Native American art is felt to this day. The exhibition explores the context in which this remarkable group of students came to OU, presents their development as artists, and demonstrates their legacy. Curators for the exhibition include instructor Dr. Alicia Harris and student curators Meagan Anderson, Danielle Fixico, Chris Tallbear, Olivia von Gries, and Nathan Young. This exhibition was made possible with generous support from the Mellon Foundation.

Resistance, Memory, and Play Through July 3 Since 2005, the Jerome M. Westheimer Sr. and Wanda Otey Westheimer Distinguished Visiting Artist program has provided the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art the opportunity to exhibit work by significant contemporary artists. New media artist Joseph DeLappe is the eighth participant in this esteemed program. Resistance, Memory, and Play highlights the work of DeLappe, who has been working with electronic and new media since 1983. He has exhibited his artwork, which includes online gaming performances and sculpture, in Australia, the United Kingdom, China, Germany, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Mexico, Italy, Peru, Sweden, and Canada. A recipient of the 2017 Guggenheim Fellowship, DeLappe’s work examines relationships between art, technology, and social issues. Through multimedia, including video games, paintings, and sculpture, he confronts audiences with his perspective on relevant current issues. Kaarnik Kalia Embraces the Full Experience of Middle School

outhridge seventh-grader, Kaarnik Kalia says he has enjoyed going to school and learning for as long as he can remember.

“I really liked school since I was small,” said Kalia. “I like going to school so much that Saturdays and Sundays are not my most favorite days of the week.” While it might sound a little bit crazy for a teenager to crave time at school over the freedom of the weekends, Kalia’s reasons for loving school are pretty logical. “I think a lot of it is about being with my friends,” said Kalia. “Just talking to them and then, also, interacting with the teachers.” For Kalia, it’s that balance between his relationships with his friends and teachers against his joy of learning. He says his favorite subjects are math and science. And it’s his passion for learning that allowed him to win 1st Place in the 7th Grade Top Scholar contest at Southridge this spring. Kalia says he worked hard to prepare for the competition. “We had to answer about 200 questions over various subjects like math, science, English, social studies, and current events,” said Kalia. “I checked out some encyclopedias and other books from the library and read them each day for an hour to prepare for the competition.” Kalia’s passion for learning has him digging deep into the world of science and engineering and his regular classes. “I like building robotics and doing other kinds of engineering kinds of things,” said Kalia. “I’ve also learned some programming using the Python programming language,

and I enjoy that very much as well.” Outside of the classroom, Kalia has taken up the violin. He says he practices for around 30 minutes a day. “It seems like it might be hard, but once you get used to practicing with it, it’s not really that bad,” said Kalia. He credits his parents for helping him strive for excellence in every area of his life. He’s an avid reader and is particularly fond of books in the science fiction genre. Kalia says his current favorite author is Arthur C. Clarke. “They really help me by pushing me to learn more than I already know,” said Kalia. They also always encourage me to give 100%.”

SPORTS BY ROB MORRIS

Westmoore Slow Pitch Coach Steps Away from the Game He Loves "Westmoore offered me a softball job," said Schwarz, "My first thought was, 'Well, I'll just get my foot in the door and then switch to baseball down the line. But I just fell in love with softball, especially the kids who put so much energy and passion into it, and I never thought about going back to baseball." These days Schwarz has kids of his own and a wife handling the lion's share of home duties. Now that his kids are at the age where they're starting to play sports, he wants to make sure he doesn't miss the most important moments of their lives. "As much as I love coaching, I've missed so many of my kids' games," said Schwarz. "By the time I get home, they're already in bed. It just hit me that I've spent 24 years helping raise Westmoore kids, and now it's time for me to raise my own." Schwarz says he has so many great memories from his time at Westmoore, most of them centered around the kids he coached. "Gosh, I can't even name all of them, and honestly, it would be unfair to leave any of them out," said Schwarz. "We've had so many great players, and many kids go on to play college wenty-four years ago, a much younger Steve Schwarz reball, but even the ones that didn't go on to play at a higher level membered applying at Westmoore in hopes of landing a were so much fun to coach." position coaching baseball. As it often does, destiny had other plans for Schwarz, including a run of success that Schwarz's other great memory is the tremendous support from included six state championships, 25 regional championships, 471 wins, multiple "coach of the year" honors, and a spot in the state the Westmoore community and families. He says that the family atmosphere was the foundation of his coaching philosophy. softball Hall of Fame as the youngest coach to be inducted.

"I decided early on that I wanted to run the team more like a family," said Schwarz. "No one is more intense about the game than I am, but I never wanted that intensity to get in the way of how much I cared about every player on the team. And I think that if you talked to most of my former players, they would tell you that I genuinely cared about them and encouraged them." Schwarz's plans now are to take all that experience and encouragement and pour it into the lives of his children as they grow up. He's also ready to step up and take some of the load off his wife, Morgan.

"My beautiful wife carries so much of the load," said Schwarz. "She does triple duty, taking care of the kids and helping with all the homework. She also runs a boutique and does some photography on the side. Plus, we actually have a farm with cows, horses, and goats that she works on. It's time for me to start carrying my share of the load there." As for the future beyond that point in time when his kids graduate from high school, Schwarz isn't quite ready to say he's done with the game for good. "It feels weird, and I'll miss the game," said Schwarz, "But I'm out of high school ball until my kids are done. After that, who knows. Yah never say never, I guess." MAY 2022 | MOORE MONTHLY | 57
