IA3 PHASE 3- ART AS ALTERNATE By Kaitlyn D

Inquiry Focus from Phase 1 I want to further explore ways to alter the appearance of found objects and structures with natural processes in order to change their meaning, tone, colour and texture. I am going to investigate and experiment with the following: • Burning to change texture, colour and tone; • Sunlight to change the colour; • And freezing to change colour, shape, texture and tone. I would like to also focus on creating a meaning related to global warming and environmental issues as I will be using natural processes to create art in a contemporary context.

Phase 2 Annotated Work

In In Denial, the words represent the close-minded stance taken by the Australian prime minister and the damaged layers obstructing some of those words represent attempts to minimise the threat of global warming. I was inspired by Philip Hanson’s use of words to create shape, line and pattern to create focal point and movement. I utilised techniques that Jacqueline Scotcher used to abstract a tree trunk, such as rotating the painting every so often, layering with chalk pastels and white acrylic paint with water to create semi-transparent layers.

In Unravelling, I was also inspired by Philip Hanson’s use of words to create pattern, shape and line, but I was also inspired by Kasper Sonne’s use of fabric and burning to depict objects mid-transformation. I did this to depict what was currently occurring concerning pollution and global warming, as he also explores world issues related meanings. I originally was going to do a mixture of cubism, normal tone and curvy shapes to create contrast as inspired by Madeline Kelly, but I decided doing this mixture of styles with the subject matter I chose made my artwork not cohesive. The suit and damaged aesthetic I chose as inspired by Kasper Sonne represented the “unravelling” of companies’ attempts at deflection of blame regarding pollution.

Artist Statement

Disconnect Acrylic paint, metal wire, paper, pen

This artwork visually and abstractly represents social alienation of people due to their differences from the majority through sculpture and drawings. The disconnect between the heads and bodies depicted in blue pen and wide spacing between each sculpture or drawing represents the feeling of isolation. The bodies depicted are alien-like to play on the word "alienation" and the contrasting materials (2D blue pen on paper and smooth, 3D, silver, metal wire) represents the differences that cause social alienation. Proportion is varied to depict the disconnect from others.

Body of Work

Body of Work Annotation

Social alienation (a condition in social relationships reflected by a low degree of integration or common values and a high degree of distance or isolation between individuals, or between an individual and a group of people in a community or work environment) Due to the term alienation, I created more supernatural/alien-like bodies instead of human bodies to visually make a pun on the word alienation Had the heads in the blue drawings larger and the bodies smaller – the variation in proportion creates asymmetrical balance and emphasises a disconnect from others Feeling of being separated is visually shown through the wide spacing out of heads and bodies from each other and various other small sculptures of people Differences that cause social alienation are represented by the contrasting materials, textures and colours of the 2D blue pen drawings on paper and the smooth, 3D, silver, metal wire sculptures Using wire cages to layer over some pen drawings also reinforces the meaning of social alienation and the feeling of barriers between other people Dark room but with bright light shining on artwork when photographed to create a dark atmosphere – reinforces feeling of alienation

Supporting Evidence ARTIST RESEARCH

Johannes Siemensmeyer:

•Uses ballpoint pen to depict famous people •Utilises geometric shapes to create organic/natural shape •Creates tone using line and colour – will use ballpoint pens and lines to make monochromatic drawings of figures •Abstract yet realistic quality which I want to implement in my artwork •His work does not have any deeper meaning

Adam Riches:

•Uses pen and ink to create monochromatic frenetic portraits of brooding anonymous figures •Uses cross-hatching •Uses variation of density in markmaking to create volume and tone •Calls his style of drawing as “figurative expressionism” - mixes contour and super-smooth drawings (one captures the outlines and edges of the subject and the other displays fine point of the pen with layered hatch marks) - will use a mixture of strong dark lines and cross hatching to create tone and shape •Drawings are done intuitively without planning or drawing references – will try to experiment by drawing without references

Edoardo Tresoldi:

•Experiments with transparency of mesh and with industrial materials to transcend the time-space dimensions – depicts the relationship between art and world •Contemporary context •Focuses on landscape elements •Creates large scale installations of architectural and figurate sculptures made of wire •Grid pattern wire is used in all his artworks – creates pattern and tone when layered multiple times •Abstract yet realistic aesthetic created by the abstract material of wire and realism of the sculptures •Will also use wire to create abstract figurative sculptures and play with proportion by creating smaller and larger figures •Will not have facial features either to add to the abstract aesthetic •Will mix techniques of creating shape with wire – will wrap wire around to have a more dense sculpture and for the larger scale sculptures (if I have time) will be made from chicken wire type wire

•Mixed media – wire and paint – 3D and 2D creates contrast while also maintaining harmony due to both elements are realistic. •May try to experiment with the backdrop and have parts of the body that was originally going to be made from only wire, to also have segments painted on the backdrop •Planning – have torso and head made out of wire with legs and feet drawn onto the backdrop, arms will be separated from the body made from wire and hanging spaced out from the torso to create symmetrical balance – will paint legs in grey paint to match the wire so it appears more cohesive
