Welcome to the April issue

It’s April... And now the clocks have gone forward, we can look forward to lighter evenings. I don’t know about you, but I always feel a bit more motivated with the longer daylight hours, especially if it’s still light when I finish work.

Although Easter has been and gone, there’s still some Easter fun to be had. A Dino Easter Egg Hunt Trail is being held in Bury St Edmunds town centre. It’s on until Sunday 7th April, and there’s a top prize worth up to £100 up for grabs! Find out more on page 12.

The early bank holiday on Monday 6th May, plays host to the Southgate Community Fun Day. It’s on the Hardwick Primary School playing field from 10.30am–4pm. Plenty of fun for all the family. See page 23 for more details.

On Sunday 12th May, The South Suffolk Show is back! They have generously offered our readers the chance to win a family ticket for 2 adults and up to 3 children, find out more about the show and how to enter on page 8. Entries close on 26th April, so don’t miss out!

We hope you enjoy this issue with lots of info from local businesses, plus all the usual news and events. Take care, and we’ll see you in May!

soapbox challenge 2024

We hope, as this issue reaches you, that spring has finally sprung after all these months of rain. As we look ahead to the summer we are now “racing” ahead with plans for our annual soapbox challenge which will take place on Saturday the 31st of August at 11:00am.

As always, we will be heading to Mount Road and the Priory School in Bury to watch lots of crazy people race down the hill in their homemade karts. Previous years have seen an array of soap boxes from Mario Kart, horses and chariots, police riot vans and Scooby Doo’s Mystery Machine and this year promises to be just as crazy.

Huge thanks to Treatt, our headline sponsors, who are once again helping us put on this event for the community. Their support is invaluable, and we can’t thank them enough.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank our other sponsors; Clarkes of Walsham, Sealey’s Tools, A C Webb Electrical (all of whom will be entering teams again) and Enterprise Car & Van Hire.

If you would like to enter a team or would like to find out more about being one of our sponsors, then please head to our website.

Each team and sponsor can have a promotional stand in Soapbox City so it's an incredible way to be able to showcase your business to all our spectators.

As always spectating is free and, we think, it's a great way to end the summer holidays so do pop the date in your diary and come down and join us.

And to whet your appetite, do head to our website to see a video from last year’s soapbox and to find out more. www.mywishcharity.co.uk.

What’s been happening at…

HARDWICK Primary School

Another busy month at Hardwick with some exciting and fantastic happenings.

We announced the opening of our own community food and clothing room Room Zero open for all of our Hardwick families with a large selection of pre-loved uniform and food items and also welcomed our two newest additions - our female Guinea Pigs called “Pepper” and “Cinnamon”.

We celebrated World Book Day with children and staff dressed as their favourite characters, a fun assembly with MC Grammar rapping lots of well-known children’s books, and the hugely successful Golden Ticket event organised by the FoHPS with lots of children opening their prize envelopes for some brilliant winning treats. And there was Red Nose wacky non-uniform day, the Big Walk and Wheel Challenge, and the launch of our new approach called Zones of Regulation to empower children with the tools to deal with their own emotions.

Our sporting heroes led by Mr Rampley had some amazing successes, a group of 5/6 players participated in an inter-school netball competition at South Lee School. Playing brilliantly they

were placed first in their group, dropping no games, sweeping aside the opposition to win the semi-final 2 - 0 and only narrowly losing in the closely fought final. The pupils showed great game awareness and confidence and now qualify for the Suffolk U11 Finals in Ipswich.

Then a quartet of Year 6 players took part in a table tennis tournament at King Edward VI School, amazing after just a few lunchtime training sessions after some great matches they won through to the final just losing out to South Lee to finish very creditable runners-up.

Finally we share the pride we have in our children following a busy week when the Ofsted Inspection took place, they shared their best learning and behaviour and were happy to talk to the inspector to help showcase all that is great about Hardwick. Well done to all our fantastic pupils and staff.

Compiegne Way

The road seems to be drier at the moment, even with some rain. We have asked for an update from Suffolk CC/Highways but awaiting an official update report.

Town Council Meeting

I attended the meeting last week and it was great to see a wide range of charities being supported and funded by the Town Council. The meeting only runs once a year.

Eastern Relief Road/ Rougham

Once again a request has been put in for waste bins as the route is getting more rubbish along here with more traffic and people using the route.

With Macdonalds and other units being developed, the bins would be useful at designated points. Await update.

In

or out of a jacuzzi, that is the question!

As the spring weather is turning warmer and thoughts turn to doing more outdoor activities, there is new medical advice on using jacuzzis/jacuzzi baths –previously those with lymphoedema and/or lipodema were told to avoid using them.

The updated advice is that the jacuzzi water must not be too hot and not to stay in the jacuzzi too long - becoming even slightly prune like is a complete no no. The bubbling water changes the lymphatic fluid to being more jelly-like, this

is easier to disperse, especially if you have a lymphatic massage afterwards as it helps to move the fluid/jelly more easily.

WHAT IS THE BEST EXERCISE FOR THOSE WITH LYMPHOEDEMA AND/OR LIPODEMA?

A question was asked at a recent LSS meeting of what is the best exercise to do for those with lymphoedema and/or lipodema? The best exercise is the one you stick at and enjoy doing!

Tripudio is a good all round exercise regime for lymphoedema and lipodema. Gentle exercises, but by doing them regularly, they can make a difference to both flexibility and to keeping the lymphatic fluids moving too.

A Warm Welcome Awaits

I had been suffering with depression, a large part of which was due to health issues and the constant pain. I had to stop working due to my health and so I found myself becoming isolated. I knew I had to do something to help myself, to start making a new life. I looked around to find something where I could meet people, start venturing out again. It was so scary. I didn't know this group existed. When I saw the extent of what you could do at this group I thought I would give it a go. My first meeting my anxiety was quite high, so I gave myself a talking to, telling myself that this wasn't going to hurt me and what was the worst that could happen so I put my big girl pants on and went. I was warmly welcomed and I was told that the talk that

day was birds of prey including a visit by some owls. I had hit the jackpot, I love owls. After the talk we had coffee and a slice of lovely homemade cake. People were so friendly. They were happy and laughing. This perked me up and made me smile. We chatted about all sorts of things. I was also told about the Positively Crafty group and the Coffee Morning. I could just go to the meeting or join in with any one of these. I've not looked back since and I have made some good friends. To use the saying. “There are no strangers here just friends you haven't met yet" Why not come and see for yourself. You to, will be warmly welcomed. What have you got to lose.

DOUBLE CHEESE & SPRING VEGETABLE TART

This savoury make-ahead tart has a delicious crumbly base – no one will realise it’s shop-bought pastry! Fill with goat’s cheese and beautiful spring veg including asparagus and fresh peas

INGREDIENTS:

METHOD:

500g block shortcrust pastry Plain flour, for dusting 25g mature cheddar , finely grated

200g asparagus spears , woody ends trimmed

100g fresh podded or frozen peas

2 eggs

100g crème fraîche

150g double cream

Whole nutmeg, for grating 100g watercress

300g or 2 logs of soft, rindless goat’s cheese

Prep time: 30 mins

Cooking time: 1 hour

Serves: 8

Roll the pastry out into a rectangle on a work surface lightly dusted with flour. Scatter over the cheese, fold the pastry in half and roll out again into a circle that fits a 25cm tart tin with an overhang. Chill for 20 mins. Meanwhile, cook the asparagus in boiling water for 3 mins, then drain and refresh under cold water. Cook the fresh peas the same way for a minute, or simply defrost the frozen peas.

Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Prick the base of the tart well with a fork, line with baking parchment and fill with baking beans.

Bake the tart for 30 mins, remove the parchment and beans, prick again if it has puffed up, then bake for another 10-15 mins until biscuit brown.

Meanwhile, beat the eggs in a bowl, add the crème fraîche and cream, season and add a pinch of freshly grated nutmeg. Scatter the peas and most of the watercress over the tart and crumble over half the goat’s cheese. Pour over the creamy egg mixture, then lay the asparagus spears on top. Finally, slice the remaining goat’s cheese and arrange on top, then bake for 25-30 mins until the custard is just set and the cheese is golden brown. Leave to cool in the tin, trim the edges of the pastry, then remove from the tin, scatter with the remaining watercress and serve cut into slices. Can be made up to a day ahead, leave out the fridge to keep the pastry crisp.

We had a very interesting and entertaining talk about the Falkland Islands by member Ken Thom, who was stationed there whilst serving in the RAF.

Postcards of the Falklands are quite rare, but Ken managed to buy a few whilst there and has continued to build his collection ever since.

We heard about the rugged terrain and demanding weather conditions,

where winds from the Antarctic of 100mph were quite common. Roads were more like tracks requiring four wheeled drive vehicles, apart from in Stanley where roads were surfaced. One of the unusual road signs was a red square with skull and crossbones that said, “Danger Mines” – a left over from the Argentinian war.

sealions, and elephant seals. Most of the remote islanders were sheep farmers who lived on a diet staple of mutton stew!

The wildlife on the Falklands was amazing and included penguins, albatrosses, seals,

Tourists were mainly from the cruise ships between November and March as getting to the Islands was quite difficult and costly. However, shops in Stanley operated strange opening hours with no exceptions for visitors.

The speaker at our March meeting was Margo Harrison, who brought along her Hearing Dog, Linus.

Margo shared some of her hearing loss journey with us, before telling us more about the Hearing Dogs for the Deaf charity and the enormous positive impact Linus has made to her life.

It was clear that a hearing

dog can transform the life of someone with hearing loss, giving them confidence to get out and about and enjoy life.

Linus was very well behaved and spent much of the evening sitting on a chair, before giving us a demonstration of his skills.

The speaker at our April meeting will be telling us about Turkish cuisine.

This months’ make is all about the weather. Spring is here and its time for rainbows, sunshine and outdoor play to make an appearance!

YOU WILL NEED:

An old piece of stiff cardboard and cellophane in rainbow colours or Sellotape coloured in felt tips, a sharp knife and glue.

Draw out a rainbow shape on your cardboard, making sure you leave gaps in between your coloured stripes.

Cut the cardboard rainbow out using your knife (ASK AN ADULT TO HELP)

Attach the cellophane colours in order using your glue. Or stick Sellotape on and then turn over and colour with felt tips pens on the non sticky side. Once done place more Sellotape over the tape so its no longer sticky

Hold your rainbows out on a light surface on a sunny day and watch the reflection of a rainbow appear.

TOP TIP…

You could try holding them up indoors and using a torch to see if you can create rainbows on your bedroom wall.

Rougham Control Tower Aviation Museum

Welcome to our new season…

Please join us on our open Sunday’s, even though the first opening is prior to this months’ edition (only just!). Also remember the clocks have changed – lighter evenings are here at last. Surely the attraction of CAKE, coffee or tea, great company and a rearranged museum is tempting.

Our Sunday opening will again entertain ‘special’ guests – from reenactors and military vehicles to car clubs and armoury displays. The ‘Echoes’ of the Past event will be the first Sunday in July 7th with a ‘40’s Tea Dance’ on the Saturday 6th. Please put these dates in your diary.

We are also indebted to Chris Day who has provided the excellent quarterly ‘Rougham Round Up’. The Autumn / Winter edition is a great read and includes articles both from recent events and wartime stories. Please look at the ‘Rougham round Up PDF’ on our Facebook page. 31 pages of interest, including a little quiz to jingle the brain cells!

Over the past few months’, the historical past of this area has been highlighted on the TV series

with ‘Masters of the Air’.

Below is a snippet from the local tourism advertising. The museum has been a significant part of this memoir:

“On Sunday make your way over to Rougham Control Tower Aviation Museum where you can step back in time to life during the war on the airbase. The museum itself is housed in the original control tower with a specific room dedicated to the brave war hero Frederick Walker Castle.

Browse the fascinating collection of memorabilia including photos, artefacts, uniforms, letters, and photographs, which tell the story of the Bury St Edmunds base and the US personnel stationed there. Afterwards, check out the flight of peace sculpture which commemorates the US Airforce’s

arrival at Rougham Airfield in 1943. The awe-inspiring B17 Flying Fortress commemoration sculpture, with a dove of peace blossoming from it, is in symbolic remembrance of those gallant American servicemen who, by preparing, maintaining and flying the B17 Flying Fortress bombers, contributed to lasting peace in Europe.”

Please join us and meet the reenactors / volunteers who will show you the museum.

The season begins with our continuing appeal, please also remember. We Need You in 2024!!

There are plenty of ‘jobs’ and projects that you can become involved in. Small contributions, even if only once a month, all help. We are also always looking for items relating to the airfield, museum or town which we can display. Aviation books, photographs, models (including Corgi or Dinky vehicles) can generate valuable income to sustain the displays and facilities. Again, please can you help?

Memberships are due for renewal on the 1st April.

If you are not a member, why not join? You are very welcome. We are really hoping for a great season – we look forward to you joining us. The CAKE is calling (or should I resist the calories? No, it would be rude not to).

See you again next month in May, here in The Directory.

BURY ST EDMUNDS CRICKET CLUB

At Bury St Edmunds Cricket Club we are delighted to report that two of our players recently represented England Over 40’s in the World Cup competition in South Africa. Justin Bishop (see photo) and Sean Park acquitted themselves very well.

There were 12 countries taking part. England played 5 group matches beating Canada, Zimbabwe, USA, in this match Justin Bishop scored 82 and Sean Park 27 not out as England won the 45 over game by 97 runs.

The fourth match was a win against Namibia and England

won by 8 wickets with former Bury player Ben France scoring 39 not out. The hardest game was against Australia Over 40’s which England won by just two runs. England scored 201 thanks to a top score by Gary Park, brother Sean who added 35 and Justin Bishop 39, Australia needed 4 to win off the final ball but only scored 2, hence England won by a narrow 2 runs.

The semi final proved a very good game as hosts South African scored 224.9 and England were 207.9. Australia won the match between the losing semi-finalists, getting their revenge having

lost previously to England, a great occasion for two Bury St Edmunds players to participate playing alongside Nick Compton and Darren Stevens amongst other former professional players.

We are sure it was a great experience for all concerned.

Why don’t builders add solar panels, batteries & rainwater harvesting systems to every new home?

Seems like an obvious question but when I was able to pose it directly to Rishi Sunak a couple of years ago he fobbed me off with the classic answer of ‘We are looking into it.”

I was very frustrated that it’s an obvious fix to many of our problems in UK, so I thought we should have a quick look at the benefits and possible pitfalls.

SOLAR PANELS AND BATTERIES

The average cost to install a 4kW system to an average 3 bedroom house in UK is around £9,000. This is the direct cost to the general public, I can only assume a house builders’ cost to install hundreds of units would be lower. To put this into perspective, a house of this size costs around £280,000 so by adding the solar system adds an extra 3.2% to the house price and at a mortgage rate of 4.5% over 25 years adds £600 per year to your overall annual payments of £18,672.

So what are the benefits?

Firstly the saving on electricity per year is about £730, this means an immediate saving of £130 per year against the increase in your mortgage to have a solar system added by the builder.

The financial saving to householders is a help but solar systems on all new houses also increases our national energy security. We become less reliant on energy suppliers and external energy supplies. We are also protected to some extent against sudden price hikes from our suppliers.

RAINWATER HARVESTING SYSTEMS

A rainwater harvesting system collects rainwater falling on your roof and stores it in a large tank either underground or beside your home. This water can

Just as importantly solar systems increase our renewable energy capacity in UK and help our move to nett zero carbon to help reduce climate change.

Battery systems mean we can now store some of the energy we produce which acts as an extra buffer to help prevent overburdening the national grid.

be used in a number of ways such as toilet flushing, clothes washing, garden watering and car washing. It cannot be used for human consumption either deliberately or accidentally, however annual water savings are still high ranging from 30% to 50%.

An average water bill is around £600 per year so financial savings range from £180 to £300 per annum.

Here are the costs…

To install an average rainwater harvesting system in UK is around £6,000 including installation (probably lower at builders’ rates who could be installing hundreds of units).

On an average mortgage this

I would love to hear your thoughts on

adds around £396 to your annual payments, this means there is a small increase to your overall housing cost of between £18 and £8 per month.

The benefits

Reduce rainwater run-off from built up areas to help decrease flooding. Less run off from built up areas decreases pollutants washing into our river systems.

The water savings will progressively change into financial savings for households.

Reduced carbon footprint for water delivered to your home.

A rainwater harvesting system gives your home a temporary back-up in times of drought.

THE CATHEDRAL ART CLUB

The Cathedral Art Club is a small group of local amateur artists who meet weekly to enjoy the opportunity of getting together and pursue their artistic skills. This Art Club has been running since late 1980 and has a membership of 40. The aim of the art club

is to provide a weekly social event and enable members to participate in local annual events in the Cathedral. During the course of the year they have demonstrations and workshops, occasionally by professional artists and club members and also make visits to

other places of interest. An annual art exhibition is held in the Cathedral in the summer and the club also donates paintings and crafts to the St Edmundsbury Christmas Market each year. from Stay & Play
Magarita,

Never judge a book by its cover

As some of you may know I have been reading the Bible everyday for Lent and have had a whole new experience traveling through Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John’s views of Jesus’s time on earth.

Since writing these articles more people have asked me about my faith, which I feel is a really positive step. When I explain my attraction to Christ Church they are often intrigued by our services. (In case you are interested, I came to Christ Church because my children were made so welcome, and given lots to do to introduce Jesus’s stories in an entertaining way and 14 years later I am still here).

As a building Christ Church is in a great location, but because in church terms it is relatively new, (40 years), it

isn’t always on people’s radar. Very often other landmarks next door help explain its location and then people laugh as they realise they have walked or driven past it hundreds of times.

Christ Church is more than a place of worship; it offers a space for so many clubs. One of these clubs which happens every other Friday is Stay and Play. Once a fortnight up to 100 preschool children and parents or carers come to enjoy our big open space to play and talk to each other.

In a way, from the outside looking in, you may not think a church would provide such a fun way for youngsters to express themselves.

But Magarita and close family have done an amazing job using the right

communications to reach out to the estate and beyond to encourage families in.

This has not only been a joy for the Church but helped people see that people with faith are just part of the community. Like most people they want to get to know others who live locally and may be needing a friendly ear to talk to while their children play.

I personally feel that Jesus never hid his faith and his purpose being on earth, which sends its own message to us all.

So next time you walk or drive past Christ Church perhaps you should stop and see our notice board so you can decide if there is another reason why you should step inside before judging it by its cover!

YOUR LOCAL CHURCH IN THE COMMUNITY CENTRE

Amazing Grace!

Ten years ago, a man in my church gave a testimony. He confessed to having a bad gambling habit. And said that he’d recently taken £2000 out of his child’s savings account and used it to bet on a horse - which didn’t win, and left him wondering how he was going to tell his wife..?

But the next day he found an envelope on his doormat. It contained a large amount of money. The donor didn’t give their name but a note inside read: ‘I was praying for you the other day and I had an overwhelming sense that you needed some money, so please find enclosed a gift’.

The envelope contained £2000.

The man was so overcome that he has not gambled since that day. He attributes that gift to the grace of God.

As a Christian, I believe that God is unbelievably gracious to us. Which

means that he treats us so much better than we deserve to be treated. We see this illustrated on the cross - Jesus taking the punishment and dying the death that should have been ours. Such an amazing act of grace that it changes our lives. Causing believers to live in attitude of gratitude to God every day.

Of course, the examples of Jesus on the cross and a person giving £2000 are extremes. And they make us wonder how we could emulate such grace in more everyday ways..?

Well recently, a stranger showed me how. I went to the Friendly Loaf Bakery in Nowton. The only customers

in that wonderful shop were three children and man and a woman. The woman was ordering. By the time she’d finished, the shop had filled up. And so, the sales assistant asked who was next? “I am” I proclaimed assertively! I then ordered and paid. But as I was leaving, I noticed that the original man and two children were still in the shop. I suddenly realised that they had not been one family but two. Which meant that I’d jumped the queue. I was mortified and apologised profusely.

As I drove home, my discomfort caused me to reflect on that father’s grace. He hadn’t corrected, humiliated or admonished me. Rather he’d simply allowed me to go first. What an amazing example he was to me and to his two sons. His grace will surely have a lasting impact on all three of us.

THE 19TH HOLE

Email: adamtrettpga@hotmail.co.uk Facebook: Adam Trett - ADT Golf Coaching

Welcome back to the 19th hole… it’s that time of the year that us golfers have dreamt about, the clocks have changed and it’s THE MASTERS this month.

The Masters, it’s at this time of the year that I get excited for the golf season ahead. I always see The Masters as the start of the season and what better way to do so than with a trip to Augusta National to watch the worlds best players play around what I think is one of the worlds best golf courses.

COACHES CORNER - THESE STEPS WILL HELP YOU!

Short game, a skill that will be on show around Augusta National for sure. Do you have a system that you use to plan and execute these important shots?

I enjoy working with players on this area of their game. However, many golfers are unsure which club to take from different situations and how to plan to get the best results possible from each location.

Let’s make a plan!

LIE

How is the ball lying and what club can you realistically use from the position you find yourself in. This skill, and it is a skill, is so often overlooked but it all shapes how you can play each shot.

LANDING SPOT

Now you need to locate our landing zone, as a general rule I would say this should be as close to you as possible, and allow the ball to roll toward the target. Most of the time this will be just on the green or very close to it, this spot starts to build the picture of the shot you want/need to play.

CLUB SELECTION

Now you have read the lie and

looked for your landing spot, now we need to match those two areas to a club selection choice. My advice would be to look for a LOW lofted club first and move towards the HIGHER lofted ones.

DO NOT just pull your most lofted clubs out straight away… Let’s play smarter than that. This process will need some practice but stay consistent and it will improve your decision making around the greens.

DRILL - Hit the TOWEL

This drill allows you to practice hitting your landing spot from different distances and with different clubs.

Place a TOWEL of the green in any location (NO target/flag needed).

Start one pace off the green and when you hit the TOWEL 3 times in a row move back 3 paces and repeat the drill. How many stations can you complete? Or set yourself a number of stations you need to complete before heading home. As you move back you will need to change clubs and learn to control the length of swing to

Have a great month, enjoy the first major of the year and getting out on course and playing this great game. I will speak to you all next month.

match this to the landing point. If this becomes easy then try changing the lies as well as the distance, learn to practice HARD to make playing seem easier.
