Welcome to the December issue
It’s beginning to look a lot like... Christmas! There’s so much going on in and around Bury St Edmunds this December. Throughout the magazine, you’ll find there really is something for everyone. From carol concerts to disco’s, Christmas shops to the long-awaited release of Avatar: The Way of Water. Not to mention a little football tournament! Yes, it does feel a bit weird that we’re not in the garden having a BBQ watching England, but is it finally coming home for Christmas?
If you’re looking for something a bit different to do this Christmas, why not try an escape room? The Evidence Room in Bury St Edmunds has a very festive Christmas escape room. Up to 12 people can play, it’s a great idea for a group of friends or family, find out more on page 9.
Eating out over Christmas and want to support local independent businesses? Verve Bar and Restaurant’s Christmas menu looks absolutely delicious! Take a look on page 11, perfect for a family meal out, or a larger group booking.
Thomas Ridley, based on the Rougham Industrial Estate, are still running their 10% discount for our readers, which could come in handy for Christmas. You can order on their website and usually collect same day, see page 5.
We’d like to take this opportunity to wish all our readers, advertisers, contributors, delivery teams, and printers a very merry Christmas and a happy new year. We’ll see you in 2023!

UnFayre
It’s a very busy time of year as we approach the Xmas period. At Council, the difficult decision not to host the Xmas Market was made quite some time ago and during a time where Covid was more of a concern and it was a move I personally can see the reasoning for but I did not support. Instead, we have many more but much smaller events ongoing through November and December. At Town Council, we supported Theatre Royal to put
Armistice
I was very humbled on the 11th and on Remembrance Sunday to be able to represent our town for the final time in the Festival of Remembrance. It is very important to pass on the baton to our younger generation and they had a chance to meet a 103 year old veteran this year.
on the Santa experience you may have seen at the Arc and there have been a myriad of activities across town. I supported the local Xmas Craft Fayre at Moreton Hall
Community Centre organised brilliantly by Lisa Fisher, which showcased local makers and reminded me of Etsy IRL. Absolutely brilliant.
Fireworks
With the background of war in Ukraine, it brings it home that people from our town were at war not too long ago.
Thanks to Tom Murray for representing Council at Luke Southgate’s memorial and for Commander Holland for meeting his family at Angel Hill.
Last month, we saw the return of the Round Table fireworks in the Abbey Gardens, which again we were happy to help fund from TC. It is a real balance with people’s concerns about wildlife and the environment contrasted with tradition, but we cannot ignore that we need celebration and some fun in these times and to see so many children enjoying the fireworks made everything worthwhile. I had the honour of selecting the young people to press the big plunger to set them off and having seen little Alfie and Edwin dancing around to the music I had to get them on stage to start proceedings. The Round Table plough all the money raised into local causes, including St Nicholas Hospice and they do an enormous amount of good for the town.

Community Awards
We held our annual Community Awards late in the year which was postponed following the passing of HRH Queen Elizabeth. These people give so much for our area and it is great to have the opportunity to recognise volunteers and those who are so altruistic.
Are You There S.I.D?
I get a huge amount of correspondence about speeding cars, traffic and HGVs. We have some speed indicator devices which are regularly moved around town, but what we have now done is to partner with Sudbury and make changes to the background software. I can now see proper data. Pictured is the SID on Bedingfeld Way in Moreton Hall, where I am monitoring both speeding and volume of vehicle movements, particularly any increase since Suffolk Park was opened.
Most of all, have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
A busy term in Girlguiding
Girls in Bury District have been enjoying a variety of activities this term. 2nd Bury and 10th Bury Guides had a weekend camp in September. Some prickly visitors joined 1st Moreton Hall and 2nd
Bury Brownies one evening and we learned a lot about caring for rescued hedgehogs. You may have spotted 2nd Bury Brownies and 3rd Bury Rainbows, in pyjamas and illuminated
headgear, doing their sponsored walk around the Moreton Hall area to raise money for Children in Need.
At half term 1st Moreton Hall Brownies and Risby Brownies spent two nights at Stoke Ash Girlguiding Centre. They made tie dyed tee shirts and completed a variety of outdoor challenges. They especially enjoyed the campfire with singing, marshmallows and sparklers. It was good to see them growing in independence as they cooked and looked after their temporary home.
To become involved in Girlguiding go to www.girlguiding.org.uk and register. Adults who would like to discuss volunteering can contact girlguidingbsedistrict@ btinternet.com

Following a local Parish Boundary Review the Lark Grange Development will be joining Moreton Hall Ward on Bury Town Council and West Suffolk Council in time for the May 2023 District and Parish Elections.
THE FLYING FORTRESS
Frank has been in contact with Greene King to enquire about the Flying Fortress. The response was it will re-open once all the houses on Lark Grange are finished.
FLOODING
Flooding on Compiegne Way is still causing problems and considering it is a major trunk road and part of Suffolk County Councils HGV Route the failure to solve the problem is mystifying.
ROUGHAM AIRFIELD
As part of Bury 2041 Rougham Airfield was identified as an area for development. The initial representations and consultation has closed and MHRA are keeping a close eye on the situation as and when the results of the initial consultation are published and West Suffolk Council proceed to the next stage.
ROAD SIGNS
Why unlike a lot of other town and cities there are no road signs saying through traffic or through route in and round the town. The signs at Junctions 43, 44 and especially 45 needs resigning especially 45 which make no mention of Moreton Hall, Bury St Edmunds or Suffolk Business Park which is strange when you think of the money invested in Rougham Tower Avenue (The Eastern Relief Road) which is woefully underused.

WHAT IS CRYOTHERAPY?
Moreton Hall WI
At our November meeting our speaker was Amanda Sutherland who told us about her ‘Creative Journey’.
After leaving school to follow a fashion design course at her local college Amanda won a place at the London College of Fashion and then went on to be head buyer at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. From there she worked on several West End productions before joining the world’s leading costume house ‘Angels the Costumiers’ where she worked
on numerous films, theatre productions and television dramas.
In 2002 she started her own business with an emphasis on Bridal accessories and Fascinators. She is based in Haverhill and twenty years on the business is stronger than ever as she has extended the range to include vintage turban bands, jewellery and seasonal accessories.
Amanda’s talk was fascinating and inspirational, showing what can be achieved by hard work and self-belief. She bought lots of her creations with her
which members were able to purchase. It was a great evening, and we look forward to welcoming Amanda back next year for our Open Meeting, so if you are interested in hearing her speak do watch out for our publicity posters.

What’s been happening at… HARDWICK Primary School
By Zara Cowling, Head of School & Andy Abbott, Governor & FoHPS Chairman
As Christmas fast approaches it is that wonderful time of year when we are entertained by festive shows and concerts at school and Santa time seems ever closer as the FoHPS hold their new Christmas Fair. It seems we have never been busier; the diary fuller than ever, and November was just bulging with so many exciting things happening.
There was a spooky start to the half term with the FoHPS Hallowe’en Disco in the hall that was dressed to impress with brilliant decorations and the children had an amazing time.
We then celebrated Hardwick Loves Books Day with all in school dressed up as their favourite book characters and as you can see from the montage there were some spectacular costumes. Pupils had a great day immersing themselves in books and taking part in book themed activities and the Book Fair, all learning focused around our love of books. Dressing up was again the order of the day as we took part in the Children
in Need “Great Spotacular for the popular Pudsey charity.
More FoHPS initiatives included the welcome return of Movie Mania and Mr Jones dusted off his waistcoat to once again test teams brain cells at the adults only Quiz Night. It was so good to introduce Come and Share Sessions across the school year groups and finally at the
end of the month there were the annual residentials with Year 4 heading for Burwell and Year 6 the North Norfolk coast to Hilltop.
Finally to all our fantastic teachers, and support staff, our amazing pupils past and present, parents, carers, families and friends we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a sincere Happy New Year.

Festive greetings to one and all
We find ourselves in December and what a tumultuous year 2022 has been. We find ourselves still living with Covid, an unwanted guest that may unfortunately be with us for some time to come.
December is both a festive and giving month, along with spending time with family,
friends and loved ones, but do please bare a thought for those who maybe alone or not as able to join in festivities.
Life is not always about grand gestures and a ‘hello’, a smile, along with friendship and offers of support can often help to brighten what can be not so bright times for others.

Giving to Yourself
Christmas is about giving, if you give to others what are you giving to yourself?
Consider these:-
A sense of purpose boosts your self-esteem. A sense of accomplishment acknowledges achievements. Releasing resentment can make way for improved health and relationships. Letting go of other people’s expectations of you.
A sense of adventure, you learn more about yourself and become resilient, have more
fun and become braver. Being empowered gives you strength and reduces vulnerability. Focus on the present and count your blessings, you are more capable than you know. Give yourself permission to explore and create the life you want being mindful of your actions as you adjust. Make time to do something you enjoy. Do what you love, be true to yourself and be your own best friend. Forgive yourself when things go wrong and find time for self-
care, its essential, not selfish. These are gifts you can give to yourself to live your best life.
As you go through the darker days put one foot in front of the other every day and remember to breath. Keep moving forward, find the light and avoid the shadows.
Looking ahead give thought to taking a step forward, give yourself something you deserve – support. By having a strong network of support, you are never alone. Do all this for yourself.
POSITIVELY CRAFTY
Calendars were achieved in the November session. You do not need to be a master crafter to join us. We are learning new things every time we get together. It is a fun, light hearted afternoon. Give yourself the chance to change your focus, become absorbed and enjoy company.
The year is soon to come to a close so we take this opportunity to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and to say thank you to all our speakers for their presentations, to Southgate Community Centre for accommodating us, to the Directory Team for publishing our articles and more importantly to you the readers, for listening. Until we meet again take good care and enjoy the festive season.

reflecting on 2022
As we say goodbye to 2022, we would like to reflect on a challenging but often rewarding year as we continue to support the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust. As you may know, our aim as your local NHS charity, is to enhance the care of you, if you are a patient, to support your loved ones and also to support the staff who care for us.
With that in mind we will start back in JANUARY when we handed over timers to the Parkinson’s nurse. These timers ensure that patients get their medications exactly when needed as time is vital to ensure their symptoms don’t suddenly flare up. Each ward, including Newmarket Community Hospital and Glastonbury Court, were given a Parkinson’s box with the timers and information.
positioned to prevent loss of range of movement and to help them avoid pain.
MARCH saw World Kidney Day and the renal staff receiving an ECG machine, thanks to local company Treatt plc.
APRIL was about parents, in particular those that suddenly found themselves spending the night on the Rainbow ward. Comfort packs were introduced, containing things such as a toothbrush and paste, water, notepad and pen, tissues and wipes, and a bit of chocolate just to make that first night in hospital a little easier
it. Plus, an array of DVDs from Dad’s Army to David Attenborough for them to enjoy.
JUNE allowed us to support the community with a donation meaning we could provide the paediatric speech and language team, based at St Helen’s House in Ipswich, with toys galore to aid their therapy sessions.
FEBRUARY saw us give a T Roll to the stroke ward. These specialist positioning rolls enable patients with neurological conditions to be
MAY meant DVD players. These large screen DVD players have proved a hit across the hospital, and we have now provided several wards such as the stroke unit, the learning disability nurse and the dementia team with one as well as having some in the charity office for all to borrow if their patients need
JULY saw us donating to both the paediatric day unit and the Rainbow ward. The day unit got a portable measuring stick to take to the patient’s bedside and the Rainbow got some wonderful fun chalk boards for their outside play area.
Visit our website to donate or to find out more. We are on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, @mywishcharity, do give us a follow to keep up with our latest news. www.mywishcharity.co.uk @mywishcharity mywishcharity
AUGUST was about horses as we welcomed Godolphin and their champion retired racehorse, Papillon to Newmarket Community Hospital. You can see the video on our You Tube channel; it was an emotional day which is worth a watch. We hope to repeat this again next year.
SEPTEMBER not only saw us bring back our annual Soapbox Challenge, but we also gave some nebulisers to the community respiratory team. These nebulisers mean patients can be treated in their own homes, avoiding hospital admission, and so also freeing a muchneeded beds.
OCTOBER meant we supported our maternity unit with memory boxes for parents who sadly lose a baby. These boxes ensure all memories are captured and we hope they help at such a difficult time.
NOVEMBER was about caring for family members as we handed books over to the cancer unit. These books are aimed at children who have a relative that is undergoing cancer treatment. With such a hard subject to explain, especially to younger children, these books help open up the dialogue for a bigger conversation and to explain it in suitable terms.
DECEMBER. Our final aim for the year is to provide each patient with a gift on Christmas Day. Once again, we have launched our Virtual Christmas Gift appeal which allows the wards to hand out a gift to every patient. It’s hard enough being in hospital over the festive period but we hope that these gifts will show patients that the community care and are thinking of them.
To donate a gift please go to our virtual Christmas Appeal where you can choose a ‘gift’, write a message and even put up a photo if you would like.

Thank you for reading a small round up of our year. As you can see, we cover a huge range of care across all ages. If you want to find out more or you would like to fundraise for us in 2023, then please head over to www.mywishcharity.co.uk. We would love to hear from you.

Cycle-to-Work
Bethan Hassey
Among the many queries we receive, there is an increasing number relating to Cycle to Work schemes, which may have been triggered by rising fuel costs, convenience, personal fitness or simply a business initiative.
If you are interested in offering the Cycle to Work scheme to your employees, three options are open to you.
The first is ‘salary sacrifice’ where your employee agrees to relinquish part of their pre-tax salary in exchange for your funding of the cycle hire. There are various conditions which must be met including that 50% of the cycle is used for ‘qualifying journeys’ such as commuting to work.
If your employee has sacrificed their gross salary, this could affect their entitlement to benefits such as Maternity Allowance and State Pension. There are also areas around Corporation Tax and VAT to be considered too.
Option two is a loan to an employee to buy the bike with repayment being deducted from their net wages. There are some tax and national insurance implications if the loan is more than £10,000 (some bike!), as it could be considered a Benefit-in-Kind and would need reporting on a P11D form.
Finally, as the employer you could bear the cost of a ‘pooled’ cycle which would be treated as an asset to your business instead of recovering the costs your employees.
A point to consider is that the scheme may be subject to other regulations. You can set up your own Cycle to Work Scheme or alternatively you could outsource the scheme to a specialist Cycle to Work Scheme provider who would ensure the scheme is fully compliant, provide advice and administer the scheme.
If you are interested in the Cycle to Work Scheme and would like to know more, please contact us on Skyliner Way, Moreton Hall.

Christmas Appeal for Green Light Trust
It should be a better Christmas. We have learned to live with Covid. Not forgetting the grief for those who lost their loved ones. This time last year, the vaccine had been rolled out and we were feeling a little more optimistic that we were finding a way through the crisis. We will be together again this year; the Christmas party is making a welcome return.
Yet somehow the world seems a scarier and even more uncertain place than in 2021. We are all being buffeted by a cost-of-living crisis balancing the heating bills, spiralling housing costs and a weekly hike at supermarket checkouts. It is difficult to have health without wealth.
We know that those who are least able to cope with the effects of an economic crisis are the individuals who will be disproportionately affected. The difference between deprived areas and those more affluent are telling. Those individuals who live in our poorest boroughs are twice as likely to be prescribed antidepressants as those of us who live in leafy suburbs.1 Our general mental health is in crisis. 1 in 4 of us are living with poor wellbeing. Over 8.3 million of us were prescribed antidepressants last year. Overall
Follow us on social media @greenlighttrust
anxiety and depression have seen an increase of over 25% in the UK since 20192 and the impact on our young people is spiralling out of control.
WHAT CAN BE DONE TO CHANGE THIS DEPRESSING PICTURE?
Health is positively influenced by our connection and access to nature. Science has proven that significant health indicators such as cortisol levels, dietary choices, exercise habits, how long, and even the quality of life itself are impacted by access to nature.
There are glaring inequalities with access to nature. It is always the more affluent streets in our towns and cities that have more trees. Green Light Trust through running its courses in life skills out in woodland settings, using nature as the catalyst is transforming lives. The individuals we work with are typically in the bottom 10% of their wellbeing and who are impacted most by the present economic crisis. Last year we worked with hundreds of individuals of all ages countywide and helped them improve their wellbeing which meant that they could find a job, enrol at college or just move forward. Lives were transformed.
HOW CAN I HELP?
This Christmas we are asking as many of you as possible to give the money that you earn for the last hour that you work before you stop work to spend Christmas with family and friends to Green Light Trust. This money will enable the charity to continue supporting those in Suffolk who need it most as we all look forward to what we all hope will be a brighter 2023.
£10 will help Green Light Trust to cook two participants a hot meal when they attend one of our woodland courses – this might be the only hot meal they eat that week. Please donate to www.greenlighttrust.org/appeal/donate Thank you.
We wish you and your families a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from all the team at Green Light Trust.

I can remember as a child we always had a real Christmas tree, then one year, we didn’t go to the local garden centre to choose our tree, instead a large box arrived and I watched as mum tore it open to reveal a white fake tree. In all honesty it was horrible but mum loved it.
Once I moved away, got married and had my own family, we decided to make it a tradition to take our children to a local Christmas tree farm to pick a tree, transport it home, set it up in a stand and decorate it together. It’s always been such fun, but now that the children have moved away I am questioning the environmental impact of all the real trees we have chopped down. Was my mum correct to buy a fake tree and use it for many years?
The short answer is no. Nearly 90% of all fake trees come from China and are made from non- recyclable plastic. They have a large carbon footprint, use valuable resources and most end up in landfill or incinerators.
Real trees help reduce climate change by removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, however, we are cutting down up to 7 million Christmas trees every year in the UK. If that was an end to it and we kept removing 7 million trees a year without replacing them, the environmental impact would be significant. Thankfully that is not how it works, most Christmas trees are farmed responsibly which means that for every tree cut down, ten are planted according to the Woodland trust. The overall effect is a nett
removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, helping reduce the rate of climate change.
There are a few other benefits of a real Christmas tree, they have a fresh, natural smell compared to plastic. They also produce Oxygen and remove Carbon dioxide helping to purify the air in your home.
Remember dispose of your Christmas tree responsibly. Take it to your local tip where they will have the facilities
to compost your tree and provide a valuable resource for gardeners.
You can also buy a Christmas tree with roots still intact, plant it out after Christmas and you have your tree ready and waiting in your garden for the following Christmas.
Alternatively you can hire a Christmas tree from your garden centre. They will do all the work to make sure it is planted out again and ready for someone else next year.
On a personal level I am delighted to discover that it’s better to have a real tree rather than a fake one. Just one word of warning, make sure your tree is grown locally, if not, it may have a large carbon dioxide footprint from transportation.

Christ Church
MORETON HALL
Christmas is coming! I guess many of us are not looking forward to it much because of all the worries we have over food prices, fuel prices, and travel difficulties due to strikes and bad weather. However, Christmas is really all about bringing us hope in the midst of dark and dismal times. The world that Jesus was born into two thousand years ago, was a land oppressed by a foreign power which had control of most of Europe. It was noted for its fine buildings but also for its high levels of corruption and its unstinting cruelty to all those who were under its governance.
Although things are very difficult, we do not face that sort of national tragedy. The coming of Jesus gives hope. Not only is He the Saviour of the world who will remove from us the two greatest burdens humanity faces, guilt about sin and the prospect of death, but His coming shows that God has not given up on humanity. He is prepared to send His very best thing, His one and only Son to come and be with us, to help us and to show us how to live.
If this Christmas time we can do the same, not giving up on hope or on those around us but doing our best for them despite how difficult we are
finding life, that is a good way, indeed the best way, of celebrating Christmas.
Therefore, I am very pleased to announce that so many people on the Moreton Hall Estate have done just that already.
1. There is a steady supply of food coming into our Church for the food bank. We hope to be able to send another thirty, forty or even fifty bags to the food bank.
2. Despite all the difficulties this year, we have sent over four hundred boxes to countries in the third world or Eastern Europe. Every box is an entire Christmas for the child who receives it and when you hear the life changing stories that these boxes bring to the lives of children you realise you have done something very special, so a huge thank you to everyone who supported this.
Service on Sunday 4th December at 10.30am when we raise money for children needing care. Every child who attends will receive a Christingle orange with sweets.
HOW THEN CAN WE CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS?
Come to our Christingle
Come to our Carol Services. On 11th December at 4.00pm with the Bury St Edmunds Youth Concert Band. Tickets £5 Adults £2.50 child from 07545 449020. Doors open 3.30pm. Or our free church one 18th December at 6.30pm when we will be singing as many carols as we can, listening to readings about the coming of Jesus, and afterwards serving hot mince pies and mulled wine. When you can give thanks for England’s triumph or be cheered up because they lost again.
Come to our Christmas Eve afternoon Crib Services. A great opportunity for young children to come and help dress the crib as they can hear the Christmas story.
On Christmas Day at 8.30am there is Holy Communion for people who want to receive in a quiet and peaceful way. At 10.30am is a Family Service when we encourage children to

bring one of their presents to tell us about it. They will also receive various chocolate treats we have for them.
Being together and remembering the true meaning of Christmas; seeking to give more than you receive and trying your very best to be with your family, no matter how far apart they may be, is a way not only of bringing Christmas alive, but also giving us the hope, we need to face the dark and difficult months, that lie ahead.
Christmas is for everyone. Christmas is a sign of hope. Christmas is all about Jesus coming to Earth and seeking the whole of humanity, including you, and inviting you into a relationship with Him. If you answer His call and come; it can make the biggest and best moment your life that you will ever know. With every good wish,

Giving Like God at Christmas!
Julian Richer started Richer Sounds, when he was just 19. He soon made a fortune selling cut-price HiFi equipment on UK high streets. At the age of 23 he bought his first Rolls Royce. He once owned two helicopters at the same time, because as he says, “One wasn’t enough”.
But some years ago, Mr Richer hit the headlines when he gave his staff a bonus of a £1000 for every year of service. The average gift was £8000. In total, he gave his employees over £9,000,000. He also transferred the ownership of his entire business to his staff, using a John Lewis-style trust. You might wonder why Julian Richer is so generous… One
reason is that he is a Christian. And so, like many Christians, he tries to give in the spirit that God has given to him.
As a Christian, I believe that this is what we are celebrating at Christmas: The generosity of God! The God who gave us the gift of his one and only son, Jesus Christ. The God who exchanged the splendour of heaven for the poverty of a stable. The God who willingly surrendered himself to the cross so that he could take the punishment that should have been ours. Enabling us to be forgiven and to begin a relationship with him that literally lasts forever. We can never out-give God! Perhaps this is why we give gifts at
Christmas - to reflect and celebrate God’s generosity to us.
However, this Christmas, everyone is understandably very anxious about money. Perhaps this explains why foodbanks have been reporting that they can’t meet the demand for food parcels. On one level this isn’t surprising. We all worry that if we give too generously to foodbanks, we might not have enough for ourselves. But when we do give generously, we so often discover that in God’s economy things work differently, and that somehow the more we give away the more we seem to have.
Today, Julian Richer is still giving generously. Indeed, every year he still makes around 400 charitable donations. Interestingly, he says that he doesn’t worry about being too generous. In fact, he says that these days, he sleeps a whole lot better.
So, this Christmas, let’s keep giving generously, so that like Julian, we always feel richer.

COACHES CORNER – HOW TO GET MORE BACKSPIN!
We are looking at how to get more BACKSPIN. This is a question as a PGA professional golf coach I get asked a lot. So this month we are going to give you a couple of simple tips to allow you to increase the amount of BACKSPIN you create.
DO YOUR CLUBS LOOK LIKE THIS?
If so you are affecting how much backspin you can produce. Spin is produced from TRACTION between the surface of your club and surface of the ball. The more TRACTION you can create between the club face and the ball the MORE backspin you will produce.
So make sure you keep the FACE, GROOVES and YOUR GOLF BALL as clean and dry as possible.
WHAT GOLF BALL DO YOU USE?
The quality of golf ball you use will affect how much SPIN you can produce, epically on your shorter wedge and chip shots.
TOP TIP: use as good a golf ball as you can afford, the more layers and the better the cover the more potential for you will have to spin the ball.
The guys at Total Access Golf have a video on this topic if you would like a more in depth look at it.
