Bishop’s visit We were delighted to welcome Rt Rev Martin Sealey, Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich on Sunday 14 January, marking the 50th anniversary of Southgate Church. After giving the sermon at the morning service in the Main Hall, he met many local people over coffee, and paid tribute to the work of the Centre as a whole, and its vital role in the community.

We look back at the fabulous festive fun and many memorable experiences had at the Community Centre at the end of 2023, The Family Christmas Disco and Wreath Making Workshop, supported by Suffolk County Council. The hugely popular annual
Southgate’s Got Christmas organised by Southgate Church, and the Charity Fair for Marie Curie Care and Support Through Terminal Illness. Thanks to all of you who supported our Multi Community Food Bank and Winter Hardship Initiative. Many food items were donated and
the Southgate Community Partnership and Southgate Church each gave £200 for fresh produce, with Eric’s Prime Cuts Butchers generously contributing, so we were able to distribute £460 worth of meat vouchers to families in need within our community.

Originally celebrating the martyrdom of Saint Valentine, the association with love and romance is quite modern. Like most festivals now, in my view, it’s just an excuse to encourage us to spend money on “stuff”. The Heart has always been associated with love and in native medicine it is the 4th major energy centre of the body and is related to unconditional love – for all beings and the earth and for yourself. It’s amazing how many words we use that are linked to the heart: broken-hearted, cold-hearted, kind-hearted etc. It is believed that the more we practice the art of unconditional love the more the energy of our heart expands and this can now be shown clearly with modern technology. Visit www.heartmath.org which since 1991 has developed reliable, scientifically validated tools that help people reduce and avoid stress while experiencing increased peace, satisfaction, and self-security. There are many things we can do that are great to support a heart that is out of balance, examples being: Heartburn • Ginger, fennel, dandelion, chamomile and peppermint all help bring relief • Pressing an acupuncture point (pericardium point 6) on your wrist may help to relieve your heartburn. ‘Grow Your Dough’ to help us enhance care This month sees My WiSH Charity launch a new fundraising challenge, with the aim to raise funds for an activity assistant for elderly patients, many of whom have dementia. Teams will receive a £50 starter donation and are encouraged to ‘run wild’ with fundraising ideas over three months to claim the title of ‘Grow Your Dough Champions’. This initiative would not have been possible without the support of event sponsors Knights Lowe, Suffolk-based chartered accountants and business advisors. Fundraising officer and event organiser, Tanya Fifield, said: “We are excited to run this event

You can craft in your own time and focus on what you can do and not what you can’t. Creativity is a powerful thing and is accessible. Exercising several parts of the brain by expressing yourself, taking negative thoughts and replacing them with positive thoughts and boosting your cognitive skills. Silence your internal critic, choose a craft to
suit you or try something new. Either way you will feel a little more like your old self. Ideas can be turned into something real and tangible being a healthy, positive thing to do. Enjoy the moment being in the now, calm the nerves, slow down, focus and boost your good hormones. As we get older it is super important to keep dexterous and connect to a large community. Why not come and share your craft with us. A social group who are there for each other and craft at a pace to suit you. INGREDIENTS: 700 g watermelon 1 small red onion 180 g feta cheese 1 bunch of fresh mint extra virgin olive oil
METHOD: Scoop out and chop the watermelon flesh into chunks, discarding the peel. Peel and finely slice the onion, crumble the feta, then pick the mint leaves, tearing any larger ones. Place it all into a bowl and combine. Drizzle over a little oil and season with black pepper.

1 tbsp ginger Ginger, chopped 2 garlic cloves, chopped 3 stalks lemongrass, outer leaves removed, finely chopped 2 tbsp coriander leaves, plus extra to serve 2 red chillies, thinly sliced (leave the seeds in if you like it spicy) 2 tbsp vegetable oil 250g stewing beef, cut into 2½ cm cubes 2 tbsp dark soy sauce 1 tsp five spice powder 1 tsp brown sugar 400ml beef stock 100g egg noodles Lime wedges, to serve
Put the ginger, garlic, lemongrass, coriander and 1 chilli in a food processor, then pulse until puréed. Heat the oil in a pan over a low heat. Add the purée and cook for 5 mins. Stir in the beef, soy, five-spice, sugar and stock. Put on a lid and bring to the boil, then lower heat and simmer for 1 hr 15 mins. Remove the lid and cook for a further 15 mins until the beef is tender. Just before serving, prepare noodles following pack instructions. Drain well, then divide between 2 bowls and spoon over the beef stew. Serve sprinkled with the remaining chilli and coriander leaves, with lime wedges for squeezing over.

It’s quite possible pilgrims coming to Bury to worship, would have looked across from what is now the intersection of the A14 at Sainsbury and seen the magnificent Benedictine Abbey, 3 times the height of our present cathedral tower, standing proud over the fledgling town rising round it’s two pristine chalk streams. There was certainly concern and support from environmental and preservation charities in Suffolk, but any campaign also needed Bury St Edmunds’ residents to come together to lobby councillors; there were only 13 months until the Local Plan came into being. This Plan was St Edmundsbury (now West Suffolk) Council’s proposal for the development of our town over the next 10 years and included a hotel with associated parking and lighting to be built on this field,

Bury Water Meadows Group held its 10th birthday party at the end of last year. Well we thought we were 10, until it was pointed out that our first meeting to seek help to protect the arable field called Leg of Mutton, took place late 2012. This field had had uninterrupted views of the water meadows for thousands of years.
along with proposals for houses; government policy to alleviate the housing shortage. But this ancient open space was at stake and this was a development too far. In the early heady years, there was even talk of raising capital to buy the piece of land. After our victory with the Government’s Planning Inspector when he ruled that this piece of land was to be used for informal recreation only, we went on to form a Group and then became a charity in 2019. We have had lots of successes, our restoration of the scrape as a wetland habitat in Ram Meadow and our latest project, collaborating with Suffolk Wildlife Trust to restore Police Station ditch into a backwater for creatures like the water vole are just two. However the Local Plan is still with us and the battle is not quite over! As you may have read in the press, West Suffolk Council’s Local Plan
will be going out for a third and final round of consultations from Tuesday 30 January to Tuesday 12 March. We understand this will be a public consultation. It will be important for those who believe we need open space, fit for wildlife of the future in our rapidly growing town, to tell the Council to go further with the many positive and ambitious environmental policies contained in the current draft. We would be keen to see the Council being even more ambitious. For example, requiring developers to deliver more than a minimum net-gain for biodiversity, when they carry out their projects to build houses and businesses much needed in the town. Our wildlife is in trouble, we are the most Nature depleted country in Europe and Nature needs a home too. Tell your Council it matters to you!

This months’ make is all about Valentine hearts. YOU WILL NEED: An old pencil (or stick) some paint or washi tape to decorate it, sellotape, small amount of 16 gauge craft wire 30cm long (or pipe cleaners twisted together) wire cutters and round nose pliers. Assorted beads optional. Tape around the pencil or stick with washi tape or paint it a nice bright colour. Let it dry. Draw a heart on a piece of newspaper with a felt tip pen about the size of your hand. Leaving 8cm spare start bending the wire into the shape of the heart. Twist the 8cm spare wire around top of the stick or pencil and twist the other end of the heart so the wire so the shape is sealed. Glue a bead on the top of the pencil to decorate. Now to make the bubble mixture… 300ml of water with 50ml of washing up liquid Slowly add the water to the washing up liquid and gently stir to combine, a chopstick is perfect for this! Let the bubble mixture rest before using (maybe an hour).

honour my uncle’s life. He was a WWII Bomber Pilot based in Bury-St. Edmunds (Rougham) in 1943. We are trying to find family members of his crew to share our film with them. He was in 94th BG, 332nd BS. My uncle’s name is Arthur H. Allen, Jr. Thanks so much.

This summer we have the most superb new outdoor cricket nets which will be available to members through the cricket season. Practice in a safe enclosed facility will greatly enhance the club.
FEBRUARY’S LOOK AT HOME GRANTS
This month I thought it would be a good idea to look at household grants. The idea came after a meeting with Jessica Smith from West Suffolk Council who has the interesting job of Environmental Management Officer. Her role is to promote and help us to apply for all the grants below. She has given me a list of grants, some other useful contacts as well as her own details. I hope the information helps many of you save some money and increases the green credentials of your home. Good luck
Domestic energy efficiency support and information Warm Homes Suffolk is an initiative set up by councils in Suffolk to help residents live in homes that cost less to heat, so they can reduce their energy usage and enjoy lower bills. Eligibility: household income below £31,000 per year and property energy performance certificate rating D or below. www.warmhomessuffolk.org Cost of living - the rising cost of living pressures can affect any one at any time. If you, or someone you know in West Suffolk are struggling financially at this time, there is support and advice out there that can help. www.westsuffolk.gov.uk/cost-of-living The Boiler Upgrade Scheme launched in spring 2022, providing upfront capital grants to support the installation of heat pumps, and in some cases biomass boilers, in homes. Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS) is a government energy efficiency scheme that’s designed to deliver improvements to the least energy-efficient homes to tackle fuel poverty and help reduce energy bills. It was launched September 2023 and will run until March 2026. The £1 billion scheme will be available to low-income households with an EPC of D or below and in the lower Council Tax bands (A-D).

How many of us like watching Dragons Den especially when we can see the gaping errors in the presentation or the product they wish to sell? Very often we find it much easier to see the mistakes other people make and rarely consider the way we conduct ourselves. I have had an excellent teacher when it comes to showing the way to treat others (This is before my knowledge of Jesus and the bibles teaching). My mum is always and has always taken time to write to people and thank them for their services. I have tried to do the same with my children but very often they argue that it’s not worth it. I recently received a message from someone in church thanking me for stepping up to help lead some services. It really took me back and reminded me that actually saying thank you goes a long way.
Jesus gave thanks by saying grace before a meal. The most well known of these is ‘The feeding of the five thousand’, Jesus thanked God for five loaves and two fish. Very often I am reminded that it is the simple things that make such a difference in all our lives. At the opening of a Service I read a prayer which has stayed with me at the beginning of this new year. ‘Loving God, when I’m feeling lost or lonely or afraid or uncertain of the way ahead, be my guide, a lamp to my feet and a light for my path, and today help me to be a good companion to those I meet.’

I love the way this message has helped me to smile at someone I don’t know or open a door to let someone get their pushchair through. I try to think about why someone may not wish to reciprocate and remember that none of us know what others are managing with on a day to day basis. I pray that we all take the time to say ‘Thank You’ to lift someone’s spirit and let them know that whatever people are doing however small it maybe they are appreciated.

Mr Bates vs The Post Office It’s hard to believe that ITV’s Mr Bates vs The Post Office isn’t just a true story. But it’s one still being played out. The horrendous injustice suffered by hundreds of sub-postmasters caught up in this scandal, has been described as the biggest miscarriage of justice in British legal history, with enormous human cost. Horizon, the computer system rolled out to each post office, incorrectly showed huge account shortfalls. These were then blamed on sub-postmasters, who were told that nobody else had had any issues, that they were the only one. Except they weren’t – and the Post Office knew this. How frightening to believe that, facing a sudden debt of thousands of pounds and the possibility of bankruptcy or prison, you were utterly alone. Alan Bates emerges from this story as a heroic
figure. An unassuming but tenacious man, he led the fight against the Post Office for over 20 years, as David against a seemingly all-powerful corporate Goliath. Unwilling to stand by and watch others endure injustice, he stood up for, and stood by, those who had no fight left in themselves. To show them they were not alone. The outcry against the Post Office is welcome. We all – individually and collectively – cry out for justice. We want to live in a society where justice is done.
As Christians, this should be close to our hearts. The Lord is a God of justice. Righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne (Psalm 89:14). And Christ stands by those who suffer. He doesn’t look on from a distance, but as one who, at the cross, has experienced it himself. It’s through his people, reflecting his character and his priorities, that he reveals this. We may never have to battle like Alan Bates and the sub-postmasters. But, each of us will, in some way, be called to be a mouthpiece for truth and justice in our workplaces, homes, or community. In doing so, we show what God is like. And we show those facing unfairness and injustice that they’re not alone. We are there with them. God is there with them. With thanks to Jules Gadsby

January brought some really cold days and wet weather which wasn’t great for those of us that wanted to get out & play. COACHES CORNER – PITCH IT CLOSE If you watch the best players in the world week in week out, you will see just how good these players are from inside of 100 yards. This month’s coaches corner will show you some great ideas to improve your pitching technique from these key distances, it will allow you to either make use of those great drives or rescue a par where before you might have made a big number. Set up is key and this simple set up will allow you to achieve more consistent and forgiving strikes while playing these scoring shots. The image and descriptions here will show you key areas to focus on. The ball position, this should be centered to just forward to allow for a swallower impact. This swallower approach into impact will allow you a greater margin for error. Check Point, a great check point is to have the grip end of the club pointing towards to the first belt to the target side of your zipper.
