Thank you to everyone who supported our Christmas Food Bank collection and came and donated in December. Thanks to you we were able to support families in need at what can be an especially difficult time of the year. A special thank you also to Southgate Church who donated £100 so that we could buy fresh ingredients to supply alongside the dried and canned goods. A reminder that there is always a collection point inside the Southgate Community Centre for the church foodbank so if you are in a position to and would like to, please feel free to drop off non-perishable items next time you are passing.

When you cook at home (or pack up your lunch), it’s easier to eat better because you have full control over what’s served and how it’s made. This particular goal leaves you some flexibility to eat out on the weekends, or grab lunch with your colleagues on a Friday (of course, you can modify the days of the week to match your personal schedule). Make sure you’re including a lean protein and plenty of vegetables at each meal.

The word snack tends to be synonymous with packaged foods, which are typically higher in sugar, salt, and unhealthy fat than unprocessed or minimally processed foods. Rather than nibbling on biscuits, crackers, crisps, and nutritional bars (even the healthier brands), reach for whole food alternatives like a piece of fruit, a handful of nuts, yoghurt, or cut veggies with or without a healthy dip. These snacks are more nutritious and more filling than most packaged snacks.

Zero in on the one eating pattern that tends to do the most damage to your diet (and has the most excess calories). Is it late-night eating, alcohol, your daily coffee shop visits, huge portions at dinner, lavish restaurant meals, or a stubborn sweet tooth? Now, create a plan to solve that particular issue. If you love dessert, maybe your plan is to have fresh fruit with whipped cream six days a week, and a special treat on the seventh day. If pastries and coffee drinks are costing you hundreds of calories a day, change your daily order to a skimmed latte and a banana. Consider this nutrition triage — by targeting your worst food habit, you’ll have a significant impact on your overall diet, while causing minimal disruption to your routine.

Make vegetables a top priority

If you struggle with eating enough produce, this is the ideal issue to target in the new year. A simple starter goal is to add at least 1 portion of veggies to lunch and 2 portions to dinner. At lunch, supplement your usual sandwich or soup with a cup of baby carrots or bell pepper strips or a side salad. At dinner, pile on the roasted, sautéed, or steamed veggies. Some of our favourites are sautéed spinach, roasted cauliflower or parsnips, baked sweet potatoes, and steamed broccoli or green beans.

Comparison of efficiency between new and old homes

Is your old boiler coming to the end of it’s life? Time to look for a change. Our government is encouraging us to move to greener options. One of their suggestions is air source heat pumps. This month we will give a short guide to this relatively new form of heating.

A heat pump can be used to extract far more energy from the heat source (the air) than it consumes. Heat pumps are measured according to their coefﬁcient of performance or COP (not to be confused with the recent Climate change conference in Glasgow COP 26) and typically produce a COP of 2.5-3.5. That means a heat pump using 1 kWh of electrical energy can deliver say 3.0 kWh of heat. In the right circumstances air source heat pumps can reduce bills and lower greenhouse gas emissions, but this is not the case in all properties. Air source heat pumps work at lower temperatures than gas boilers, generally around 50C instead of 60C, they also take longer to heat your home.

2. In an older home, air source heat pumps can work efﬁciently but you may need to upgrade the home’s insulation as well as installing larger radiators and bigger pipework to compensate for the lower water temperature.

Firstly what is it? – This illustration gives you the basics of how air source heat pumps work ie. the pump takes in air from the outside, compresses the air and releases it at a higher temperature. This hot air is used to heat water in a tank for home heating and hot water through pipes and radiators or can be used as a source for underfloor heating.

There are so many wonderful courses around the UK that I am lucky enough to be able to play and compete in some amazing competitions - Let’s do it!

This month we look at TAKEAWAY’S, this has nothing to do with your favourite weekend orders but more the early movement in your golf swing. So many of us (me included) get this first movement either a little quick, inside or picked up and this can (not for everyone) cause issues into the backswing or downswing.

So it’s at this time of year that we all made some new year’s resolutions of things we would like to do more or better this year. I have made a golfing resolution this year… mine is to play more competitive golf and not to worry about the outcome but just enjoy competing.

SET UP: Place two balls up at address and then place your club in between so that the back of the club is resting against the back ball.

THE PUSH: The idea is to push the back ball away straight leading to a wide takeaway position. Any other movements won’t allow the ball to be pushed back straight or stay close to you.
