This year, we have been targeting loneliness in particular, but as we emerge from Covid the mental health of the nation has been under great scrutiny and Suffolk Mind is at the forefront of helping people in need. Lee stayed on the air on the fab RWSFM for a full 24 hours and I went in to congratulate him at the end of his shift on Saturday morning. I have to say, I’ve seen him looking brighter!

LEGIONS OF POPPIES

We saw a lot of activity last month around the Royal British Legion, who do such great work to educate and to keep our fallen heroes in mind. As well as the background this year of the horrible events in Ukraine, we have also seen the 40th anniversary of the Falklands War and all the hurt which came with it. This feels different as so many more people have the war in living memory, but is no more or less important than our usual remembrance events. I was happy to have aided the Legion and the Poppy appeal during April and May with marking the anniversary. We also saw the installation of the Town Council funded VJ memorial and we were

We are seeing Jubilee activities ramping up and by the time you read this we should be deep in celebrations of this historic time. During May, the Rickshaw charity and Gatehouse organised the Torch Relay through various parts of town. This will ultimately find it’s way to the Abbey Gardens to light the beacon. Many of us were invited to participate, but I think I have to highlight our wonderful nurses who were involved. Special thanks to Amanda Bloomfield for running the show on behalf of the town.

Back after two years absence due to the pandemic the Southgate Community Fun Day on Bank Holiday Monday was a huge success as the sun shone fairly on a packed Hardwick Primary School playing field. SCP Chairman Andy Abbott enthused “It was fantastic that we were once again able to welcome back the Fun Day wholeheartedly enjoyed by the local community. We had seven schools taking part in the football tournament, the only one staged for young Year 1 children, and the experience for children, coaches and supporters was fantastic, the atmosphere throughout the morning was incredible with a large crown enthusiastically cheering on the players”.

AFTER a two-year wait, Hardwick Primary School’s Year 3 and 4 pupils were finally able to visit the Suffolk School Farm and Country Fair Show at Trinity Park, Ipswich.

Former local councillor Ann Williamson allocated £100 from her locality funding allowance to go towards materials for Harry’s enterprising scheme but he decided to donate the money as a farewell gift and present to the school’s Gardening Club. Mrs Bray and the children will gratefully be spending the money on plants and accessories for the new garden area outside the kitchens.

Year 3/4 teacher, Jo Rayson, said one of the children’s favourite exhibits was the ‘Sheep Show’, “Who knew sheep could dance to music?”!. “There were so many presentations for the pupils to connect with; such as a demonstration of how charcoal is made – relating it back to our ancestors and forward to today when it is used in BBQ’s. A trailer ride took them from the ‘animals in the countryside’ area across the showground to a food tasting marquee, which was very popular”.

What’s been happening at… HARDWICK Primary School

Finally thanks to our acclaimed Year 6 gardener Harry Tarpley who nearly died when he was a baby and as a thank you to the NHS gave a much needed make-over to eight garden gnomes belonging to the MyWiSH Charity from the courtyard gardens at the West Suffolk Hospital. He took them home and wrote a story for the hospital to tell of how the gnomes went on holiday and came back to the garden feeling refreshed and well rested.

Activities were aimed at educating children on the importance of the role of farming in Suffolk, as well as highlighting wildlife and conservation. Interactive zones included displays of sheep shearing, gun dogs and a small animal petting area with rabbits and geese.

One of the boys mentioned how amazing it was to see a Queen Bee and learn how they make honey and the children were surprised by the size of the Shire Horses, cows and goats and all children took every opportunity for a close encounter with as many animals as they could. Mrs Rayson concluded: “It was an amazing day and everyone engaged enthusiastically with all the exhibits, learning so much about Suffolk’s long farming heritage.

May came and went in a blur as our amazing year 6 pupils celebrated the end of SATS week with a picnic and games in Nowton Park and Years 3 & 4 prepared for their production with three brilliant performances for parents, carers and family. At the other end of the school what brilliant effort from the Year 1 footballers as they took part in the tournament at the Community Fun Day on the Bank Holiday Monday. Competing against six other schools they went into their last game without conceding a goal and finished a fantastic third.

The children and young people that we support, can discover how to manage risk by helping look after our growing colonies of bees.

Government and education bodies have long recognised the benefit of nature and more needs to be done to reconnect our children with their natural environment. Just being outside in a green natural environment helps children to reconnect with themselves, each other, and the environment. Being outside reduces cortisol levels and reduces stress and improves wellbeing.

By the age of eight the average child in the UK has spent a year of their lives staring at a screen and that was pre pandemic. Less physical activity and access to green spaces is having an adverse effect on children’s health and wellbeing at an alarming rate. This is before we consider the impact of playing outside in allowing children to learn how to take risk, collaborate with one another and problem solve. Our children can name all the characters from Pokémon but try asking them about our native flora and fauna, and there is a disconnect. Our children are becoming detached from the environment in which they live at a time when the future of our very existence and the planet itself need all of us and especially the next generation, to care and conserve to make any impact on the climate emergency.

Mental maths on how far the worker bees must fly each day to support their Queen and calculating how many bees populate the hives – maths by stealth does not seem like maths at all. While at the same time learning that the very existence of the future of the beehive means that every creature within the colony needs to work together to collaborate to survive.

Our Natural Alternative provision teaches children and young people practical skills which are useful for life but more importantly it provides the catalyst for these children and young people to help themselves. It helps them to remove those barriers which are preventing them from learning and making progression with their lives and improves their wellbeing so they can move forward.

Next a tree which has been damaged by storm Eunice needs to come down. Working out where it will fall using a stick the length of your arm is an easy calculation to make. Call it trigonometry and that is terrifying. Calculating the angle and direction of the cuts to enable a safe fell of the tree. In the natural space of the woodland classroom, it is just a tree that needs to come down, a job to be done. A small stream needs damming so that a pond can be created to improve the bio- diversity in the wood.

Time to build a den using the natural resources lying strewn on the woodland floor. It has an entrance and a place out front for a fire to make smores and seek comfort. Some furniture is hand crafted for inside, a table perhaps and a stool constructed from the exact tree they felled as part of the ongoing woodland management. This could be the only space that this young person can call their own. It may be a world away from a chaotic home/school life. It is a safe space in which this young person has control over their environment.

A fortnight after the coronation, the Queen attended a fleet review at Spithead off the coast of Portsmouth on 15 June 1953. There were more Commonwealth naval ships present than at the 1937 coronation review.

Using the frigate HMS Surprise as a royal yacht, the Queen and the royal family reviewed the lines of the anchored ships at 3.30pm, finally anchoring at 5.10pm. Major Royal Navy units included Britain’s last battleship, HMS Vanguard, and four fleet and three light aircraft carriers. The Royal Australian Navy and the Royal Canadian Navy also each included a light carrier in their contingents (HMAS Sydney and HMCS Magnificent). This was followed by a fly-past of Fleet Air Arm aircraft, involving 327 aircraft flying from four naval air stations. Afterwards the Queen transferred to HMS Vanguard for dinner. These two postcards depict the conclusion of the day with the illumination of the fleet at 10.30pm followed by a magnificent firework display.

She recently reached the elusive 100 Club earning herself a brand new junior parkrun ‘100’ wristband and a certificate to recognise the first 200km distance she has covered. Isla Southwood really looked forward to her 4th birthday. Yes, there would be a cake and presents, but she’d finally get the chance to print out her own personal barcode and run her first junior parkrun. She’d watched her brother Thomas and sister Bethan, run the Bury St Edmunds event, held weekly at Ten Acre Field, Moreton Hall, many times but until she turned 4, she knew she couldn’t ‘officially’ run the 2km course.

It is this sort of camaraderie and family spirit that epitomises parkrun and makes it all worthwhile for the individuals who give up their time voluntarily week in, week out to make it happen. The first time Isla completed the distance was 20th May 2018 and she smiled all the way round. She kept the tailwalker thoroughly entertained, her little legs not stopping until she crossed the line in 18:55. Now just less than 4 years on, Isla has improved her time immensely with a PB of 11:36.

The Southwoods - Running in the Family St Edmunds

Thomas was part of the inaugural Bury St Edmunds junior parkrun back on 23rd October 2016. He enjoyed it so much that the following week at Event 2, he brought along his sister Bethan. Bethan says she keeps coming back because “I like meeting new people” whilst Thomas adds “It’s helped with my fitness and speed for Pacers races”. All 3 Southwood children also now run every Saturday at the 5km parkrun at Nowton Park, with Bethan and Isla having completed over 20, whilst Thomas, a junior member of Bury St Edmunds Pacers, has used the longer distance of parkrun as a springboard to get into the Suffolk Cross-Country team at recent events.

In the past few weeks we have been able to provide DVD players so patients can watch their favourite films. All patients have access to WiFi Sparks, a free platform which provides them with tv, radio, newspapers and magazines but we wanted to help those without a tablet or smart phone. The result is they can now watch a range of films and box sets to pass away the time as they recover before going home.

Bury St Edmunds Cricket Club have had a good start to the season winning 3 of the first 5 games in the East Anglia Premier League. A new initiative is to present individually numbered `Club Caps` to players with an outstanding record for the club. This is the last month for a while that we will look at clothing. We have discovered that parts of the fashion industry are terrible for the environment and have a high greenhouse gas impact increasing the rate of climate change. We have seen that you can make positive environmental statements with the type of clothes you buy and wear. Now we will switch to finding simple ways to help reduce your spending on clothes. On a personal note, I detest shopping for clothes and rely on Christmas and birthdays for my new wardrobe. This has always acted as a natural deterrent to overspending on my look, however for those of you who love the whole fashion thing here are a few simple ideas to keep costs down.

Avoid the sale racks unless you have been waiting for a reduction on a particular item – we can be lured into buying things we do not need.

Donate, sell, recycle, start with the clothing you rarely wear.

Set a monthly spending limit.

Purchase quality over quantity – it will last so much longer.

Wear fewer colours. (it also means less accessories such as shoes, belts, jewellery, handbags etc.)

This month we are going to focus on bunker play, now it’s at this time of year everyone longs to be on a beach somewhere warm, however, if you were to ask some golfers they would prefer to be anywhere but in the sand. So it’s time to change this, these few simple tips will allow you to approach bunkers with a lot more confidence and achieve better results.

SPEED: To get the ball out of most bunkers takes some force, so it’s essential to have speed going through the impact area of this shot. As you can see from the image, I have taken the club back a good distance to ensure that I hit my target (the line) with some speed in the club head.

LOFT: Lastly, make sure you’re using enough loft to allow you to get out easily. Use a sand wedge or lob wedge and even on occasions open these clubs up as well to activate even more loft to be used while playing this shot.
