It seems like another lifetime ago now, but two years ago, we really didn’t know quite what was coming did we? There are a number of individuals who litter pick on a voluntary basis but they should not have to do this if everyone either put their litter in a bin in or took it home.

Bursting with activity for 2022

It is so refreshing that at Southgate Community Centre some sort of normality and a return to pre-pandemic bustle has seen our fantastic facility bursting with activity and hurly-burly enterprise. In just five weeks we hosted some seven parties and the return of Friday Night Bingo welcomed 80 people keen to get their eyes down with new caller, Cody, making the evening such fun.

Sadly we had to make the decision to cancel the planned Valentine's Ball on February 12th due to lack of numbers. But our events committee led by chairman Jessica Rudd have huge plans for the rest of the year. Back on the May Bank Holiday Monday will be the Fun Day enjoyed by so many for six years, once again kicked off by a Year 1 football tournament and many other exciting activities. Then four

The feedback from the children and staff was brilliant, many teachers came to me or sent an email saying how much the children enjoyed it - a huge success! and we raised £160 for the charity.”

Mainly generously funded by County Councillor Richard Rout and supported by Councillors Patrick Chung and Sarah Stamp children will be part of a seven week programme to refresh outdoor areas into attractive and biodiversity enhancing spaces.

NSPCC Numbers Day

It was a busy and exciting first half term after the Christmas break and it was great to be part of the NSPCC Numbers Day in February. Maths lead Nick Shore explained “The event itself for NSPCC was to raise money for the everything the charity does - this includes Childline, Speak Out Stay Safe and other programmes that the charity runs. The purpose at Hardwick was to celebrate and enjoy working with numbers, one of the negative impacts of the pandemic has been the children’s resilience,

We can learn so much from bees. Some work so hard they shorten their lives “just” to preserve their community and their Queen. As these young people learnt, each member of the colony has their part to play for the sake of the whole community. No member of the hive is left out: they genuinely are all in it together. Bees seem to understand that everyone in society is important, that no one should be left out or miss the opportunity to be the best that they can bee.

They learnt that trying something new, scary and unfamiliar could be rewarding. This built confidence and interest. Each week increased their fascination with nature and their confidence and self-belief. It was a lesson learnt from the bees, but it would be far from the last lesson learnt. Some felt unable to put on the equipment but still wanted to get close to our bee community. Therefore, we decided to build “the safe place to bee”. This was our new viewing gallery complete with roof and netting so we could observe the bees going about their busy day without risk of disturbance or stings. That shelter came from a decommissioned Covid testing centre plus a donation from Orwell Rotary.

These precious green spaces and rural landscapes are very important in contributing to the town’s historic setting and identity, so in 2015 the Group produced a walking guide to help people understand that there’s more to Bury than its marketplace and Arc shopping centre! The Lark and the Linnet, the two rivers which run through Bury are both globally rare chalk streams and the land around them has been an essential part of the town for many centuries and as floodplain land or water meadows, offers a serious flood alleviation benefit in our uncertain climactic times. Little did we know that we would really need these

spaces for our wellbeing and happiness in 2020, having all been locked down due to Covid 19. Our short daily walks round the meadows took on a new sense of purpose. People began to look at the nature around them more intently.

Bury Water Meadows Group (BWMG) came together in 2013 to safeguard the Leg of Mutton, an arable field which has had an uninterrupted view of the town since medieval times. At that time, the spire on the mighty Abbey Church would have been three times the height of the present millennium tower on the Cathedral so it would have been an impressive sight dominating the area.

Since then the Group has expanded its activities and became a CIO charity in 2019. It works with other organisations and West Suffolk Council to conserve, preserve and improve the rivers and their adjacent green spaces for the benefit of the public and wildlife. BWMG has a wide range of opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to get involved in, from leaflet distribution, to learning a new

It’s sad to see the state of our woodlands with all the fly tipping that’s going on. Some people seem to think it’s ok to dump their rubbish over the garden fence and leave it for someone else to clear up. In fact it is an offence, fly tipping costs councils thousands of pounds a year to clear up. Some of the stuff dumped is also dangerous for animals and young children that play in the woods, please get rid of your unwanted rubbish by using our fantastic recycling areas. It costs nothing, you can phone up and book a slot during the normal council working hours.

There is a club night on a Thursday run by an external agency where anyone can join. The centre has a multi-cultural use, refugee support, exploration meetings and support. Lots of young people use it to give them opportunities to set up their own businesses. The kitchen has been altered to provide a café, that is run by young people. The old office is now a music studio and is open for young people and is always in use. The storeroom is now a teaching space for practical skills like, plumbing, carpentry etc, and local schools access it through the week. The club is a fantastic youth centre, everyone is invited to come and see for themselves. GARDEN MAINTENANCE

It is lovely see the snowdrops and other spring flowers sprouting up all over the place. Cherry blossom in bloom, daffodils popping up and many more early flowers, the woods are being tidied up and branches lobbed to make it safe. There are a lot of logs lying about though so be careful when walking your dogs through the woods.

Place lengths of Sellotape across the plate making sure you have glass or plastic underneath so the Sellotape won’t stick. Turn the plate upside down so the sticky surface is upwards. Place the flowers and petals directly onto the Sellotape and push down.

Be careful to not get air bubbles and too many creases as you do this.

Place your flowers between two sheets of newspaper and place under several books. Leave for a week.

Every time I go to ﬁll my car with fuel, the price seems to go up. Just another cog in this merry-go-round of current price increases on everything. It has been a long time since we talked about cars and savings so seems like a good time to broach the subject again. Just to recap, on average we drive around 12,700km in our cars per year and at today’s prices that’s around £1,154 on fuel and another 1,500 kg on our CO2 imprint. Alpha is not just something we do on Moreton Hall. In fact, it is a global phenomenon and there are Alpha courses running in virtually every country and on every continent in the world. It would be very difficult to find a week when Alpha is not running

On 9th February we relaunched our parent and toddler group, Stay and Play. It begins at 10.00am and finishes at 11.30am. We were overwhelmed by both the numbers of people who attended and the comments they made then and in social media afterwards. We are delighted to be of service to the community in this way and we praise God for all the people who came and enjoyed it so much.

Over the years this has been a huge help to literally hundreds of people on Moreton Hall, who have been able to either renew their faith in God or discover their faith for the first time.

So, this year, try using Lent to strengthen yourself spiritually - even if this requires a little more of you, than giving up chocolate.

But for some Christians, Lent is an opportunity to prepare themselves to celebrate Easter more meaningfully. Lent commemorates the 40 days that Jesus spent in the desert, preparing himself for his ministry (Matthew ch4). And so throughout Lent,

use Lent to fast. Jesus fasted, not from chocolate, which wasn’t invented until 1847 by Joseph Fry, but from food. Ironically, he did this to strengthen himself… spiritually. Not eating for brief periods creates time to pray. Hunger pangs can be used as prompts to pray.

Fasting also demonstrates to God that we are serious about what we’re praying for. Christians have many testimonies of God answering prayers that were prayed whilst fasting. So, fasting during Lent strengthens us for life’s spiritual battles.

But why do people give up something for Lent? Perhaps because Lent offers a finite time period. Six weeks without Abbott’s is a big ask, but at least it has an end point! Or maybe it’s because people like a self-imposed challenge. A chance to test their self-discipline and to overcome their weaknesses. As people do when they train for the Marathon.

Giving up can make you stronger

About a quarter of Americans still give up something for Lent. That’s about 80 million people. Almost as many people as watched last month’s Superbowl, which every year, is the most viewed TV programme in America.

We are now in the season of Lent, which lasts for 40 days and finishes just before Easter Day.

In the bible, Jesus was tempted by the devil, who tried to make him: focus on his own needs; question God’s love for him; and lure him away from worship by tempting him with wealth. Tactics Satan still uses on us today. But fasting had prepared Jesus for this spiritual battle and so he easily resisted and stood firm.

Early in February, we were told by them that a devastating cyclone had hit Malawi and Mozambique, with the subsequent floods causing thousands of people to lose their houses and all their possessionsas well as their precious bibles. Roads and bridges have been swept away – so getting help to them has been extremely difficult.

As a fellowship, we have been raising money to help – totalling over £4000 in a matter of three weeks, Half of this sum came from donations raised at the concert with Graham Kendrick at The Apex last month.

Welcome back to the 19th hole, this month we all need to focus on one thing and one thing only… the clocks change and we get the light back and there is more time for golf.

This drill allows you to feel a centred turn into your backswing.

Would you like to have a swing like JUSTIN ROSE? Yes me too… this month we will look at one major thing that Justin does that you can practice at home.

I hope you are all looking forward to the season ahead. I am and I have started my preparations season, I have created a playing schedule and now it’s time to get ready for them. I can’t wait to see what the 2022 season has in store for me.

As you can see from the image, Justin’s head stays very much in the centre of his feet in his backswing. This allows for a correct turn from a centred position, from this positions he can return to club into impact consistently. Great striking has been a feature of Justin’s swing for many years now and has him regarded as one of the best ball strikers in the world.

(Left) Place your head on the surface and make a normal playing stance. From the position make your normal backswing… did your head move along or away from the wall?

(Right) Try making your lead shoulder (left in my case) turn through 90 degrees, and keep your head in place.

From this centred position backswing position you will just make your normal down swing motion but it should allow you to make this downswing moves a lot easier.

So this centred movement into the top of the backswing is an area I see lots of people improve from. It allows them to achieve a more dynamic movement into impact, also reduces the amount of sideways movement they have throughout the whole golf swing improving their ability to strike the ball better.
