Welcome to the May issue
It’s May... And with May comes the possibility of some warmer weather (hopefully). And with the warmer weather comes the possibility of eating alfresco a bit more, maybe the odd barbeque or two?
On page 4, Glasswells are offering the chance for one of our readers to win a fantastic Ooni Fyra Pizza Oven! It’s simple to enter and would be a great addition to any garden.
The Spring Fayre is back in Bury St Edmunds town centre from Sunday 26th - Monday 27th May. It’s free entry, and there’s something for everyone. The beach is back (weather permitting), virtual reality games, flower, food and craft stalls and a vintage market, plus keep an eye out for some unusual guests... Dinosaurs! See more on page 12.
Don’t forget The South Suffolk Show on Sunday 12th May. We will have gone to print with this issue before the closing date for the competition we ran in the April issue, to win a family ticket to the show, but one lucky reader will have been notified by telephone. We hope they enjoy their prize! We will announce the winner in the next issue.
We hope you enjoy this issue with lots of info from local businesses, plus all the usual news and events. Take care, and we’ll see you in June!

Living Well with BabyFree Online Workshop
Being a parent can bring with it joys as well as challenges. Even when expectant mothers and fathers feel prepared to have a baby, the reality of frequent crying, nappy changes, and sleepless nights is often overwhelming.
Our free online workshop Living Well with Baby is a one-off, 1.5 hour-long webinar, being run on a monthly basis.
This workshop is suitable for any parents with a baby who wish to learn more about dealing with stresses of the parenting role.
The workshop will look at all the changes which happen during this time and explore how these changes can leave people stuck in a negative cycle.
It also offers strategies on how to break this cycle in order to manage low mood and worry, including how CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) can help parents get back to leading a full life.
Anyone living in Suffolk can book themselves onto the workshop via our website or by giving us a call, without being in formal treatment with the Wellbeing Service.
The online session is presented live by our experts, you will not be seen by other attendees and you can ask questions to the facilitator in real time via a chat function that is private and not visible to the rest of the group.

Poem of the month, submitted by a reader, thank you!
Local companies helping us support local people
We are so grateful to receive support from some incredible local businesses and here are just two who have supported us recently.
The Infusion Group, the company behind the ICE restaurant in Rougham, have been incredible fundraisers and have achieved an amazing target of over £11,000!
This has enabled us to buy a sensory unit for the paediatric emergency department.
The money was raised thanks to quiz nights, raffles and donations from their cook school, and we were so pleased to be able to welcome owners, John and Lou Jackaman, and
Find
Operations Director, Sarah Stamp, to the hospital to meet Claire Thompson, who is the play specialist and who requested this amazing piece of equipment. Claire was able to explain the difference it will make to the young patients coming into the emergency department explaining “This unit is just fantastic. The lights and
sounds are just a great distraction for our patients and, because it’s mobile, we can move it around the department”.
This is the third time Infusions has supported My WiSH. Thank you to John, Lou, Sarah and the team for their dedication and support.

We were so pleased to be chosen as the house charity by Mowgli Street Foods when they came to Bury last year. Each table is asked if they would make a £1 donation to the restaurants house charity which in turn has led to over £4000 being donated to our WiSH Upon A Star Children’s Appeal.
Mowgli chooses a house charity local to each restaurant and the focus is always on children. These donations have allowed us to support a variety of areas which is just fantastic. You may not know but the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust cares for young people right across Suffolk including in their homes and health centres as well as in the hospital. Toys are one of the biggest requests we receive from these teams as they work fantastically well to help encourage
and motivate children during their physiotherapy and occupational therapy sessions.
Mowgli’s donations have allowed us to support the speech and language team, day surgery unit,
nuclear medicine and the community integrated team who work with young people with a range of disabilities so if you’ve eaten at the restaurant please know, these donations really have made a difference.
Can you help us celebrate the NHS?
July will see us celebrate the NHS’ 76th birthday and what better way than with a cup of tea and a nice slice of cake.
We are asking the community to host an NHS Big Tea on or around the 5th July, invite their friends and family, and raise some much needed funds to help us continue to enhance the care of patients, their loved ones and of the amazing staff across the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust.
If you want to know more then please head to our website to find out more.

What’s been happening at… HARDWICK Primary School
By Zara Cowling, Head of School, Claire Flatman - Executive Head Teacher & Andy Abbott, Governor & FoHPS Chairman
INSPECTION
We are very pleased to be able to share the final report from our recent Ofsted Inspection.
FROM OFSTED:
‘This is a school that sits at the heart of its local community. Pupils have a strong sense of belonging to their school. They learn about differences and the importance of respect and tolerance. This helps pupils to develop respectful relationships with adults and each other. Pupils show compassion towards each other. They know this is a school where they learn to, ‘accept ourselves and accept each other’.
OF A GOOD SCHOOL
We are incredibly proud of the outcome and this is testament to the hard work and dedication from all staff, leaders, children and of course our parent community.
We know Hardwick Primary School is a very special place to work and learn but Ofsted included the information below in the report that we would like to share.

Need more from your existing solar installation?
If you already have solar, invest in a retrofit battery storage system
The electricity you generate from your solar panels can’t always be used immediately. A battery storage system is simple and relatively inexpensive to fit and can store any unused power to use in the evening, overnight, or to power an electric vehicle – the choice is yours.
A battery gives you your own renewable energy source, available to you 24 hours a day for however you want to use it.
If you’ve had solar panels fitted in the last few years, you may have been put off by the size of the batteries. Solar technology has advanced to the point where modern batteries are compact, more powerful, simple to retrofit and easy to store in the home, the loft and garage.
Most domestic properties will only require 5-8kW (enough to power an entire home for ten hours), but if you need more energy storage you can add additional batteries at any stage.
Why choose Generate + Store?
• Local business for 20+ years
• NICEIC and MCS accredited
• 95% of customers recommend friends & family
• Full end-to-end service with great customer support
• No hard sales!
5star Trusted Trader serving Essex & Suffolk solar customers

With the warmer spring weather, getting outside seems more inviting to do and gardening is one activity that many of us will have been busy doing. It is important for those with Lymphoedema and Lipoedema to remember to wear gardening gloves and appropriate footwear to help
protect your skin from getting scratched, stung or damaged. If your skin suffers damage, then treat it straight away with an antiseptic solution/wipe, a medicinal cream that is suitable for you to use, and cover with a plaster/dressing to prevent any further infection of the affected area. Chronic pain sufferers hide pain so well you can’t go by how they look on the outside. They have to learn to function no matter what level of pain they’re in. So, if you get into a relationship with someone who has chronic pain issues understand that they may not be able to do anything for themselves for weeks or months at a time.
It’s a large burden for someone to take on. Take time to make sure you’re able to handle it. They didn’t ask for their body to fail. No matter how hard they try to hide it, pretending to be ok until it no longer is. When you are given a diagnosis, you have mixed feelings. You know what you are up againsthow do you deal with it?
With medication, physical and psychological therapies, mind & body techniques, joining a support group, understanding, acceptance, activities, pacing connection to others, social relationships, selfmanagement, help and support are
just some ways. When you have an invisible illness, it is difficult to argue from your perspective with ignorant people.
Frustratingly people say ‘can it really be that bad’, ‘you look good’. Even in the most excruciating pain you have to try and push through it. There’s usually no cure for chronic pain only finding ways of controlling it, you have to figure out what works for you, which may not necessarily work for someone else. Chronic pain can affect you physically, mentally and emotionally. It cannot be seen but felt, as does our feelings. Adjusting to life with chronic pain comes with a lot of grief. Grief for the life you had, for the life you could’ve had if you were healthy and grief for the life you dreamt of having.
If you see someone struggling don’t pass judgment, offer your support. We are all human, our pain is invisible but we are not, why should we be treated any differently.

In the March session we made a Twisted Easel Card. Easel cards are a simple variation of a standard card, folded with a distinctive look. They can be made in different shapes and sizes. On the front of the card score across the diagonal, fold in to create the easel. Add a topper on the folded part and a sentiment layer raised on foam pads for the ridge on the inside of the card to support the card when folded.

It was lovely to see so many members at our April meeting. Our speaker was Jenny Gibbs and her partner.
Jenny introduced herself as a Turkish ‘Shirley Valentine’ who travelled to Turkey in 1993 at the age of fifty, met the man of her dreams, Mustapha, and embarked on a new life in village in rural Turkey.
The focus of her talk was Turkish cuisine and Jenny revealed that, where she lives, their diet is almost entirely vegetarian making the most of the wonderful local produce. She told us that Greek yoghurt is in fact Turkish in origin, but there it is eaten as part of savoury dishes.
Her talk was full of humour and gave some surprising insights into a culture very different from our own, including the delights of a Turkish delight and biscuit sandwich!
The speaker at our May meeting will be the My Wish Charity.
If you fancy joining the WI or coming to a taster meeting as a visitor, do get in touch. Contact Alison on 01284 701433 or Annette on 01284 769407.

Everybody celebrated World Thinking Day on (or close to) 22nd February. Brownies and Guides from all over the division will enjoy a day of adventure at Hautbois Activity Centre in June. There have been visits from owls, bowling evenings and fundraising events for charity. Rainbows from Bury, Tostock and Mildenhall have had a sleepover and the Guides are already planning a summer camp. Congratulations to all those who earned their Gold Awards.
None of this is possible without our leaders who work so hard to
give our young members great experiences. Leaders get so much satisfaction from watching the girls grow in confidence and develop new skills. They have their own opportunities to form lifelong friendships as well.
We need new and experienced leaders to help us set up new Brownie and Guide units in the area and to help with all sections. So many girls want to be Brownies and Guides and find themselves on waiting lists. Could you train with us or come back into guiding?

WELCOME TO MY CRAFTY COLUMN!
Every month I share a crafty activity for you to try at home. Check out my facebook page for more info www.facebook.com/ thecraftyfoxes or visit www.thecraftyfoxes.co.uk
This months’ make connects to my Bury In Bloom project for 2024 which is all about friendships and flowers and how we can help them both to bloom and grow. Let’s start by making a new friend in the form of a pot person! Look out for all the giant pot people featured in the Abbey Gardens over the Summer.
By treating your new friend with love and affection you can help the seeds to grow and flourish into flowers, in the same way we can encourage friendships to grow by treating our friends right and thinking about what they might need from us.
YOU WILL NEED:
A white paper cup, a pencil, some felt tip pens, some compost and flower seeds. You may also wish to sit it on a saucer.
Draw a face on your cup in pencil remembering that the part of the hair will actually be the flowers that grow in it.
Go over it in coloured felt tip pens and rub out any pencil showing
This doesn’t have to be anyone you know so you can have fun adding glasses, a beard, freckles…
Full the cup 2/3 full of compost
Sprinkle a pinch of seeds and then cover loosely with a thin layer of compost
Add 3 tbs of water and sit on your bedroom window sill
Pay attention to what your new ‘friend’ needs , if the compost feels dry then add some water. If the seeds like sunlight move to a sunny spot, if they like shade, move away from sunlight.
TOP TIP…
You could encourage your family to all make a friend and see who can grow the most hair!

Bury in Bloom Certificates of Merit Front Garden Judging 2024
Bury in Bloom is the only UK group to organise a front garden award scheme on this scale. Britain in Bloom judges asked if residents have to enter –answer is NO as every garden or front of property within the borough boundary will be judged by the ever increasing team of judges.
Next question – how many gardens does that involve?
Over 20,000 gardens will be judged, including Lark Grange and Marham Park.
RHS in 2021/22 revised guidelines to encourage more wildlife friendly gardens. This has been reflected in the scoring system.
BLOOM BURY IN
Judges will look at your garden from the pavement or end of your drive so it is important all elements of your garden are clearly visible from the pavement. Judges are looking to award certificates to enthusiastic gardeners who have obviously put huge effort into their garden. Gardeners are encouraged to use wildlife friendly plants and minimise use of plastic.
We are always looking to expand our team of judges. No problem reaching your 10,000 steps on judging days. If you would like more information or are interested in becoming a judge then please email Lynne certificates@buryinbloom.org.uk

BURY ST EDMUNDS CRICKET CLUB
The cricket season commenced on Saturday April 20th with Bury St Edmunds hosting Great Witchingham, a club in their centenary season who are making a big effort to win the East Anglian Premier League with the signing of two former England players Montey Panesar and Philip Mustard.
The two players ensured a bigger than normal crowd at the Victory Ground but it was the home team that took the honours after a blistering start.
Nikethan Radhakrishan (91) and Alex Maynard (54) scoring
100 runs for the first wicket off just 71 deliveries. Panesar pleased the visitors with three wickets. Mustard made an entertaining score of 65 but the home team won by just 4 runs after a highly entertaining game.
Bury’s 2nd team lost with just 3 deliveries remaining away to Woolpit in another very close encounter, the cricket season is now in full swing with matches every Saturday and most Sundays.
Junior cricket coaching already underway.

COMMUNITY ENERGY SOUTH
I have just had a meeting with two of the management team at Community Energy South (CES) to see if Ecofrenzy can help with their ambitious plans to move UK towards nett zero. I came away with my head reeling with possibilities, they are doing so much amazing stuff.
Ollie Pendered (CEO) and Nick Bohane (Development director) are part of a team of 16 covering a huge area from Hampshire right up to Norfolk working on some great projects.
They explained how Community Energy South was set up in 2013 to support community energy groups in the Southeast of England. They have distinctive goals to help enable, motivate and inspire local communities to play a key role in the net zero transition through renewable energy, energy efficiency and retrofit projects.
‘Community’ is the key word in all they do. The goals are for community engagement, collective action and local leadership to help tackle climate change, ensure energy security for the community and help make energy more affordable for local companies and individuals.
They are in partnership with several organisations such as UK Power Networks, Ovesco, Buro Happold, Hampshire and Essex county council, Community Energy England, Community Energy Coalition, Riding Sunbeams and SGN. Together with their own experts they have a huge pool of knowledge to call upon to ensure best working practice, best ideas and best implementation of
ideas. There are now Community energy hubs all over the country and there are huge plans to upscale over the next few years.
Many of the current CES projects are driven from the top down but they have another arm called ‘Communipower’ which works from the bottom up and concentrates on helping deliver eco-home energy advice, local green jobs, improving individual skills and generating local market places for the provision of retrofit services. It also aims to increase domestic uptake of a range of measures such as heat pumps, insulation upgrades and solar PV. The approach from both ends means
individuals as well as communities can help provide the move towards de-carbonisation.
As many of you probably know Suffolk has aspirations to be the greenest county in the country, on this note CES have what they call a ‘Suffolk Green Cluster’, this is growing with the help of their ‘energy champions’ but CES want to move this to another level over the next few years. Watch this space.
If you want to become a part of this community led movement, please contact me or go direct to www.communityenergysouth.org for more information.

The grass is always greener. Or is it?
Written by Samantha Reid, A member of Christ Church
I don’t know about you, but I find it interesting when people make assumptions about other people. We are so easily drawn by appearances, and I have often found myself explaining to my children that other people may be able to buy the latest phone or designer clothes; but are they actually happy?
When we are very young, we often compare ourselves to our friends; and it is easy to feel jealous about what they have got. I know my children often laugh at the fact I would bring home-made ice pops in to give at the end of school, and other parents would bring bought ice creams. But I made choices to spend money on clubs and activities, and make snacks and treats from home.
At the time my children were grateful, and it was better than going without. From an early age we recognise that
we aren’t all equal but we can either appreciate what we have or feel sorry for ourselves.
The Bible constantly reminds us with stories about Jesus who would explain to the disciples it is not about everyone giving the same amount but giving what they can. Jesus shares the example of the woman who gives her only penny, while others bring many coins to the temple. What Jesus appreciates is this woman has given what she can while others will not miss what they have given.
Our recent family service focused on this idea of giving, and gave us an opportunity to reflect about our own lives. For most of us it is not money we can give, but our time. If we are honest with ourselves, how much of the material things, we have would make much difference
if they were taken away? In Stacey Soloman’s ‘Sort your life out’, we see how people have accumulated so many things, they are constantly living in chaos, and it takes a team of people to help them remove up to 80% of unnecessary items.
I am now trying to live by the rule, if I buy something, I have to get rid of something. I would rather give my time to make memories with my friends and family than buy gifts. The satisfaction is so gratifying and I feel it lasts for ever.
God does not decide if you can enter into heaven because of the number of things you have accumulated, he does show us through Jesus, that love is the most powerful gift we can give. So next time you are thinking of buying something, ask yourself do you need it? or just want it?

YOUR LOCAL CHURCH IN THE COMMUNITY CENTRE
CHURCH AT THE CENTRE
Most churches are old, so when I arrived as minister of Southgate Church in 1983 I had a shock. The church was only nine years old!
I had never met such a young church and almost everything about the church surprised me. I had never seen a church that had all its services in a Community Centre and the idea of putting out hundreds of chairs every Sunday morning was completely new to me.
As I grew to understand the church, I came to love the fact that the church lived right at the centre of community life. Location is always important and the fact that Southgate Church met in a building which everyone knew was crucial. I was also glad to attend meetings of the then Southgate Community Association although the clouds of cigarette smoke meant that it was hard to see to the other side of the room!
I enjoyed those gatherings because it underlined the fact that we belonged to the community.
As we celebrate 50 years since the birth of Southgate Church, I am so thrilled that the church continues to live at the centre of the community. Life has changed in so many ways since I left 33 years ago. Since that time we have seen one revolution after another with the introduction of mobile phones, the internet, email and social media. But I believe that the message that we proclaim is exactly the same.
Jesus came into our world to offer us new life. Left to our own devices, humankind is bent on destruction. Look at any page of history or gaze around the world today, and you will see brokenness, violence and sadness. Jesus was the Son of God and came
to our world as the only perfect man who has ever lived. He alone was able to restore our relationship with God and he did so by dying on the cross for our sins.
That was the message of Southgate Church 50 years ago and it hasn’t changed. Southgate Church was born on Pentecost Sunday. There couldn’t have been a more appropriate day for the church to start its life because it was at Pentecost, a few weeks after Jesus’ death and resurrection, that the Holy Spirit was poured out on Jesus’ followers. Filled with the Spirit’s power, the church was born. I am very much looking forward to visiting the church for this special celebration and you are more than welcome to join us, whether you are a regular church attender or have never been before.
Rev Jonathan Edwards.
Jonathan has been head of the Baptist Church in Great Britain. He was Southgate’s minister between 1983 and 1991. He now lives in Berkshire.

SOUTHGATE CHURCH
CELEBRATES ITS 50TH BIRTHDAY!
On Whit Sunday 1974, the first morning service was held at Southgate. It was attended by about 30 people.
The date is looked back upon as the birthday of the Church when something new came into the world. A Church had been born! Three years later Southgate Community Centre was opened and the Church occupied a small room within - and we have been there ever since, now in the Main Hall.
We are a partnership of the Anglican, Baptist and United Reformed churches, but welcome everyone, serving our local community in many ways. Now seems to be a good time to celebrate and to thank God for his faithfulness.
Accordingly, we are having a special service on Sunday 19 May at 10.30am when our guest speaker will be Jonathan Edwards, our first full-time minister. This will be followed by a lunch. There is a warm welcome for you to attend, and perhaps to meet old

The world number one was just too good for the rest of the field, he had some challengers but from the 11th hole onwards it was in his hands. This win gets Scottie his second green jacket and with his current form this might not be the only major he wins this year.
May see’s the second major of the year the US PGA Championship, the venue for this major is Valhalla
Golf Club. This course is designed by Jack Nicklaus, Valhalla opened in 1986 and has already established itself as one of golf’s most storied venues.
In 2014, Rory McIlroy battled soggy conditions and impending darkness to claim his second Wanamaker Trophy, beating Phil Mickelson by a single shot. In 2000, Tiger Woods defeated Bob May in a three-hole cumulative score playoff
In the 1996 PGA Championship - Valhalla’s first Major Championship - Mark Brooks edged Kentuckian Kenny Perry in a one-hole playoff. Valhalla also hosted the Ryder Cup in 2008, a 161/2-111/2 triumph for the United States.
COACHES CORNER - PLAY BETTER UNDER PRESSURE
So we have all done it, had a shot that we feel means a little more and completely messed it up. So is that your technique to play that shot? Or is it that you don’t perform as well under that added pressure?
Either way this simple tip will allow you to take the focus away from the performance and situation and give you a better chance to hit a better shot when you need it most.
So all you will need for this tip is some biscuits, YES BISCUITS! Now I will leave it up to you how many biscuits you have for this practice session.
However, the drill is designed to help relieve tension throughout the shot. The first part of the drill is to find a shot length that creates that feeling of tension.
Then all you will need to do is place the biscuit between your teeth play the shot. Paying close attention to the amount of pressure you’re placing on the biscuit.
If you can play this shot and avoid biting down or adding any tension onto the biscuit, then your tension levels should have remained low and you have a better chance to perform how you want to in the situation you have chosen.
This drill can be completed with any object you want, I just liked
If you are struggling if any aspect of your game, then I would be pleased to assist you in enjoying this great game more.
the idea of biscuits because after your practice you can just make yourself a cuppa and enjoy them.
