Queen Elizabeth II
This month's article is unsurprisingly dedicated to last month’s loss of our monarch, Queen Elizabeth. I shall keep it short and hopefully let the image of a packed Angel Hill speak for itself, but I will reiterate our deepest sympathies to the Royal Family and everyone around the world who are suffering grief.
One of the first things we do when we are elected into the chair of a council is to be briefed on what to do in the event of the death of our monarch. In this case, it was called Operation London Bridge (for Price Philip it was Operation Forth Bridge). I don't think anybody really expects to have to put the plan into action, but we had to in September. The process is over 700 years old and basically is a trickle down of news - the news is reported in London, then taken out to events in the big cities, then representatives take the news out to smaller towns and villages. It is a bittersweet process, where we proclaim the new monarch whilst simultaneously mourning the nation's loss.
The time shortly after the news is a hugely busy time. I will highlight one or two things from that spell. The cathedral really showed it's value to Bury St Edmunds and was immediately a place where
people could gather and remember, as well as hosting the larger and more accessible book of condolence, which I was privileged to sign. I will also highlight the work done by officers, which is hard as we need to suddenly put on a series of public events, including difficult things like closing roads and coordinating security.
Lastly, I would like to thank Moreton Hall Community Centre and the other public areas which opened in order for people to gather together to watch the Queen's state funeral.
Times like this show the very best side of our country and it is a privilege to watch our communities come together. As the Queen said herself, “Grief is the price we pay for love.”

Stay and Play Café
This month’s montage features the hugely popular Stay and Play Café held over four Wednesday’s over the summer holidays. This was the brainchild of local mum’s Cody and Sarah who identified the need for safe activities and entertainment for children over the long six week break. Nearly 400 youngsters with their parents and carers took advantage of the fun mornings with
unlimited bouncy castle, Suzy Abbott face painting scores of excited children each session, glitter tattoos, games, crafts, Lego and other activities all included in the entry ticket. Webby’s Afternoon Tea provided much enjoyed refreshments and so the inkling of an idea was such a success that watch this space for future fun days.
Successful Choir Concert
In Aid of The Great Barton Church of Holy Innocents
On 17th September, the St Edmundsbury Male Voice Choir was Joined by a female singing group called “Thursday Nights” and together they performed to a sell-out audience at The Church of Holy Innocents in Great Barton, near Bury St Edmunds.
Both the male voice choir and Thursday Nights performed individually in a varied programme of entertaining songs from their repertoires. The numbers included cleverly arranged pop songs and show tunes, as well as more traditional favourites. The choir and Thursday Nights also sang two songs together, being “The Rhythm of Life” from the stage show, Sweet Charity and “You Raise Me Up” previously made famous by Westlife and several other performers. The Thursday Nights were conducted superbly by their musical director, Sally Bauer and St Edmundsbury Male Voice Choir similarly by Mark Jefferson. Sally and Mark also made a fine job of compering the evening with information and amusing narrative between songs.
The audience provided keen applause after each song and, in a summing up speech, representatives of the church expressed how impressed they were
with the quality of the performances and the sense of fun generated during the evening. Thanks were made to the two conductors, the piano accompanists and of course the singers. With funds raised close to £1000 for the charity, all agreed that the event had been a big success.

What: MORETON HALL RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION
Annual General Meeting followed by Open Meeting
When: MONDAY 17TH OCTOBER
Time: 7 PM
Where: The Community Centre Symonds Road
Your local County West Suffolk and Bury Town Councillors have been invited. Tea Coffee and Biscuits Available.
Moreton Hall Residents Association was set up some 12 years ago. It is along with other local clubs affiliated to the Community Centre. It is run by a small group of volunteers.
What do we do? Our major project was the refurbishment of the Lawson Place Underpass in conjunction with Reprezent Project and West Suffolk and Bury St Edmunds Town Councils. We act as a point of information
for residents and a point of contact with all the local councillors.
Questions we get range from overflowing bins, traffic noise, HGVs cutting through residential areas, planning issues, parking problems amongst other things. People don’t always know whom to contact if they have a problem so any queries questions or issues that come our way we pass on to the relevant local
councillor/s for action. All the Residents Associations in Bury belong to the Bury Association of Community Associations (BACA). BACA has an offshoot the Air Quality Group which is looking at the green agenda and air pollution whilst the main group looks at issues affecting the town.
There is no subscription and all Moreton Hall Residents are welcome to attend any of our meetings.
We are looking for younger volunteers who have an interest in the community due to impending retirements.

Moreton Hall WI
In August we visited the Hilly Ridge Alpacas in Wattisham and had a wonderful evening in the Suffolk countryside.
Jo made us so welcome and was very informative about her alpaca herd. We were able to go into the pen with the female alpacas, but the male ones were enjoying a rest, as they had been out with trails all day.
We also were treated to delicious cakes and coffee from her new caravan refreshment facility.
It was a very special evening and well worth a visit.
It was lovely for members to meet up again in September and the hall was positively ‘buzzing’ as we all exchanged our news from the summer months. Following a visit to the proposed site for the new hospital in Bury, Irene was also able to update us on the plans which sounds an amazing facility so we must all keep our fingers crossed that it goes ahead.
Graham Dossett was the speaker, and we were
entertained with tales from his time as a holiday tour representative, guiding coach, rail and river tours throughout Europe and North America. It certainly made us look at escorted tours in a totally new light!
He clearly had some fantastic times and, on occasion, was able to travel in luxury, but he also dealt with floods, missed connections, lost belongings to name but a few ‘hiccups’, so there were trips which sounded extremely stressful from the tour guide’s point of view.
We are a friendly group and prospective members are always welcome. Contact Alison on 01284 701433 or Annette on 01284 769407.

What’s been happening at… HARDWICK Primary School
By Zara Cowling, Head of School & Andy Abbott, Governor
The fantastic weather of the summer holidays seem a distant memory but it is so good to be back at school with children settling into their new classes and routines as we start a new exciting new school year.
It was so sad as we reflected at school the passing of her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, especially as it was only last term that we celebrated her Platinum Jubilee, an event fondly remembered by the children. We looked back on her
extraordinary life and reign and answered many questions from pupils on how strange it will be to have a King and Queen Consort, sing a different National Anthem, and a future with new bank notes, coins and stamps. The thoughts and prayers of all at school were with the Royal Family over the period of mourning.
And so the new year has started at a pace and a busy September saw the return of our clubs, the popular Saturday
morning football club as well as Gym Club for all years, A & M Multi Sport Club and Netball. Rock Steady Music began as well at swimming for Year 5 and Year 3 taking part in the Primary STEPS Royal Ballet dance programme. We especially welcome to school our new Reception Class, their parents and carers. As you can see from the pictures they have very quickly settled in and hugely enjoying their start to their primary education journey.

Chronic pain is so demanding and affects so many aspects of your life, physically, emotionally and mentally. Constant pain can be soul destroying, powerful and controlling.

this life so feeling judged can lower self-confidence and self-esteem. You need help and support, not judgment.
Should you judge someone based only on what you see on the outside or what you perceive without knowing the full situation or the deep meaning behind it. The more you judge others the more you judge yourself.
You know nothing about someone by their outside appearance.

Hauntings and ghostly encountersin Bury St Edmunds
THE GREY LADY
Bury St Edmunds most famous ghost, the Grey Lady, has been sighted in the Abbey ruins, the former St Saviours Hospital site, the Priory Hotel, Theatre Royal, in shops on Abbeygate Street, in buildings on Angel Hill and in the cellars of the 16th century Cupola House on The Traverse. She is also said to appear in St Edmundsbury Cathedral Great Churchyard annually on 24 February at 11pm.
Some believe the ghost is a nun linked to the death of the Duke of Gloucester, who was allegedly murdered in St Saviours Hospital in 1447. According to local tales, it was this nun, named Maude Carew, who killed Gloucester (and not the Duke of Suffolk, as portrayed in Shakespeare’s Henry VI, Part II) but this was recently debunked by historian Dr Francis Young. Other tales suggest she is a medieval nun who was punished with execution for a liaison with a monk at the Abbey. Whoever our Grey Lady is, she is the town’s most frequently spotted spirit.
MEDIEVAL MONKS
Apparitions of the Abbey’s
Benedictine monks are also said to be frequently seen. walking around the Abbey’s grounds and through surrounding buildings.
In 1961, two men claim to have seen a monk drift down Angel Lane before disappearing through a wall; a year later, a monk was reportedly seen ‘hovering’ in Churchgate Street. A resident of the houses built into the Abbey’s West Front claimed a monk appeared in her bedroom several times. Staff in shops on Abbeygate Street have also made claims about sightings of ghostly monks.
A DOOMED LOVE AFFAIR
Visitors to the town in October should keep their eyes peeled for a soldier and a nurse in Victorian dress. The first reports were made in 1935 by two girls and their mother, who felt a chill as a man and a woman rushed past them on Eastgate Street. A gunshot and a scream were then heard.
Legend has it the woman was a 19th century nurse called Mary Treese, returning from the Crimean War with a wounded soldier she had tended and fallen in love with. Her father,
however, disapproved of their relationship and shot the man dead. Their fateful end is said to be played out every year on 20 October on Eastgate Street.
TROUBLED SOULS AT MOYSE’S HALL MUSEUM
Once a workhouse, police station and gaol, Moyse’s Hall Museum has been the focus of ghost tales for centuries. The oldest of these stories dates back to 1328, when a woman is recorded as saying she saw ‘a most horrible devil’ in the building’s cellar.
ROUGHAM AIRFIELD
With its rich war time history, it is no wonder that the Rougham Airfield is said to be haunted. Originally known as RAF Bury St Edmunds, and Station 469 to USAAF, the airfield welcomed 3,000 GIs during WWII as well as the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Bob Hope and Clark Gable, who visited to entertain the troops.
Several paranormal groups have visited Rougham Airfield and museum, many with amazing results, including sightings of a young spirit boy, who is said to have owned one of the bikes that are on display in the Nissen huts.

Terrible Tales
Exhibition at Moyse’s Hall Museum
Horrible Histories creator Terry Deary has helped Moyse’s Hall Museum bring Bury St Edmunds’ gruesome history to life by linking the museums’ most horrific artefacts to six Terrible Tales, each told in first person.
There are also some grisly interactive displays for children and adults. Step inside a gibbet cage, try on a ball and chain for size, experience the smells of history including the wretched tanner’s pits, handle thumbscrews, try on manacles and pick up a Norman sword. You can even trace the artefacts in the Red Barn Murder including the murder weapon and the disease box, where visitors can smell a pus ridden hand, is likely to be a museum favourite!
Terrible Tales is a permanent exhibit at Moyse’s Hall Museum but particularly fun to explore during Halloween. For more details visit www.moyseshall.org, Tel: 01284 706183.

In all, over 140 teams took part in the relay race covering the distance of a marathon, each team was split into 6 legs of varying distance. There was also a juniors’ race over a shorter distance with 4 teams from Pacers.

Our Tribute
As we said farewell to Queen Elizabeth II on the 19th of September many veterans from all nations reflected on her life. A great life of commitment, leadership, family values and, probably the most significant, love. Her compassion and love, from her Faith in God, significantly influenced how she ruled, governed, managed every element of her responsibilities from national and international to being a Mum.
The occasion of her state funeral, from the beginning in Scotland to the services and final laying to rest in Windsor, was seen around the world. Military precision in every stage of proceedings, perfect timing, total dignity and a true ‘Britishness’ second to none.
With over 4,000 service personnel (together with many other agency staff), the ‘send-off’ to the Boss was spectacular, very memorable and, for many, tear jerking.
Without exception, the Museum committee and volunteers recognise the service that Her Majesty performed to the Nation, the Commonwealth and the World. We are truly grateful for her life may she rest in eternal peace.
Ascending to the throne, Charles the Prince of Wales, now becomes King Charles III. His coronation will take place sometime in the future. God Save the King.
The airfield event for the North Weald Marshalling Team, Vintage Fly-In weekend, was cancelled as a mark of respect. With no opportunity to re-schedule this year, a provisional date next year has been identified which we will disclose very soon, watch this space.

The war in Ukraine has caused a seismic shift in gas supplies worldwide, any government that has not prepared for this change is now looking for alternative sources of gas to maintain energy supplies. One such source is fracking or hydraulic fracturing, this is a process whereby water, sand and a cocktail of chemicals (some toxic) are blasted deep underground to release oil and gas trapped within shale rocks. England halted fracking in 2019 following the lead by Scotland and Wales, however with a recent change in UK leadership it is back on the table.
We think this is a good time to give everyone a deeper insight into the realities of this type of energy exploration.
Firstly we have to look at the bigger picture, the UK has declared a ‘Climate Emergency’ and a drive towards zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Fracking requires more energy to extract the oil and gas than conventional sources, and additionally the gas itself is another source of greenhouse gas, high leakage into the atmosphere means fracking has a big impact on climate change. In order to fulfil our declared obligations we need to keep fossil fuels in the ground and carry on with our drive to more renewable sources of energy. Interestingly, one of the reasons for fracking is to boost our UK energy supplies, but the private companies producing the gas have no obligation to sell it to us below the world market price, so our domestic prices would not change.
issues, these being:
1. Toxic chemicals in the water used for fracking can leak into local water sources. This has happened on numerous occasions in USA and Canada. In UK this could have a devastating effect on drinking water as well as destroying British countryside. We have enough problems with our waterways at the moment without additional pressures.
2. We would require thousands of wells to supply just half of the UK’s gas requirements. This in-turn would require huge numbers of lorries to deliver and remove both water and chemicals. These lorry movements would add to the greenhouse gas emissions and impact even more on climate change.
3. Risk of earth tremors as fluid at high pressure is injected into the rock. More than 120 tremors were recorded during drilling at Cuadrilla’s New Preston Road site. This could have detrimental effects on local housing and other buildings.
As you can see the negatives of fracking far outweigh any positives and if we want any chance of achieving our goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and slowing climate change we need to increase renewable sources and speed up nuclear energy production. We hope you have found this article interesting and would love to hear from you.

Christ Church
MORETON HALL
As we come to terms with life in a new Britain with Charles III as our Head of State rather than Her Majesty the Queen, we realise how much we appreciated her faithful Christian witness throughout her life.
She was the figure who somehow cemented us together as we faced myriad challenges such as the end of Empire, the troubles in Northern Ireland, the Falklands War, our problematic relationship with Europe and all the changes we have seen in society as Britain has changed over the decades. She was always there to hold it all together for us. I am sure it is your hope, along with mine, that King Charles will be able to do the same role for however many years God allows him to be King.
One of the things that Queen Elizabeth II understood was that God is involved in every aspect of our lives whether we are in positions of power or not. She saw that God has a good and pleasing plan for every life and she also saw that doing little things well was very important. So doing acts of kindness, saying your prayers, behaving appropriately, not giving in to temptation and fury, and serving others as best we can
be the best way of not only pleasing God and helping others, but finding peace and security in our own lives.
Therefore, I commend you to reconsider the life of prayer she had, her regular attendance at church, and her love of Family and Country which she saw as the key elements of her life. These things can be yours too. The peace and security that comes with knowing God and serving Him as she did, is the key to her truly meaningful life.
show the love of God to people who are in even greater need than we are.

Honouring our kind Queen
For so many of us, the announcement of Queen Elizabeth’s death came as a great shock. Most of us probably felt that she was going to go on for ever. We had never known another monarch. At Southgate, we hastily rearranged our Sunday morning service which resulted in an informal and an heartfelt tribute to her. The new and unfamiliar version of the national anthem was sung at the end – both verses!
In the run up to her funeral, tributes were paid to the Queen’s many qualities: her unflinching, faithful sense of duty and service, her strong Christian faith, her love and concern for people – and her kindness. Those who met her have said that she would give them her full attention, showing genuine interest and generosity. She sought to connect with the people she served - people mattered to her. Kindness was a quality that ran deep in the Queen’s
character because it was what she saw in Jesus.
Kindness involves seeing people, noticing them, paying attention to them. And empathising with them – asking the question of what it is to be them right now. Kindness is an action that shows a person they have value.
It is being alert and ready to connect – to see others and acknowledge them. Kindness is often about the simple things that can just make someone else’s life better, wherever we are – making eye contact and offering a smile or noticing a need and meeting it, all of which says to them ‘I see you’.
Or giving someone our time,
a thoughtful word, an offer of help; being generous in the moment – because this is how we’d like to be treated. Every day is an opportunity to be kind like Jesus and to learn to become more like him. What would it mean for us to ‘clothe’ ourselves with kindness wherever we find ourselves this month?
Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

THE 19TH HOLE
BY ADAM TRETT, PGA PROFESSIONAL GOLF COACH THE SUFFOLK GOLF CLUB
Email: adamtrettpga@hotmail.co.uk Facebook: Adam Trett - ADT Golf Coaching
Welcome back and I can’t believe we are into October already, Autumn is here and that spells the end of the golf season for us all. But the action will continue, with the best players on the DP world tour coming into the last few events in their season. The PGA Tour has started their wraparound season already, all this month’s events are highlighted below.
As I write this it is the week of the Presidents Cup, which pits the might of the USA against a rest of the world team.
This year’s venue is on American soil and hosted at the popular Quail Hollow Club, North Carolina. I feel the course sets up well for matchplay and it will be interesting to see how the US team set the course to give them the advantage in the matches.
I feel that the result will go the way of the USA team, but after a close match in Australia last time around the rest of the world team will be fighting hard for a victory.
COACHES CORNER – EVERYONE LOVES A TAKEAWAY
This month we look at TAKEAWAY’S. This has nothing to do with your favourite weekend orders, but more the early movement in your golf swing. So many of us (me included) get this first movement either a little quick, inside or picked up and this can (not for everyone) cause issues into the backswing or downswing.
If this sounds like something you do, then why not try this very quick and easy drill to help your takeaway.
SET UP: Place two balls up at address and then place your club in between so that the back of the club is resting against the back ball.
THE PUSH: The idea is to push the back ball away straight leading to a wide takeaway position.
Any other movements won’t allow the ball to be pushed back straight or stay close to you.
SWING: Make your normal swing and finish in a balanced position watching another good shot.
ON COURSE: When you’re on the course you can still use this drill by imagining the ball being there both in practice swings and real shots. This simple drill has helped me and others over many years, I often use it in warm ups to make sure the swing isn’t being rushed into position early in my swing. Why not give it a go the next time you are having a practice.
We have had a name change to TOTAL ACCESS GOLF but we still have a video on this topic if you would like a more in depth look at these aspects and more ways to putt better. I hope this edition of the 19th Hole has helped, if you would like any advice or help with your golf game please get in contact.
