EDITOR’S LETTER

january WELCOME TO THE

This month I love..

ISSUE

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a lovely Christmas. The big news is that we have just turned 10 years old! So if you’ve lived on Moreton Hall for some time, you may even remember the very first copy of the MHD coming through your door! To celebrate, we’ve had a little makeover and we’ve also introduced a second title, The Southgate Directory, which, like The Moreton Hall Directory will be going out to all the homes in the Southgate Ward. January can feel like a very long month, well, a very long wait until pay day! So you might be pleased to know we’ve got lots of discount vouchers from local businesses in this issue, including restaurant vouchers from The Old Cannon Brewery, Zen Noodle Bar, The Rose of Bengal AND Orissa, so we can all go and enjoy a little treat during this long month. This issue is jam packed with articles but I’ve run out of room to talk about them! So I hope you have a read through and enjoy, see you in February.

Gemma

EMMA HARDIE AMAZING FACE MORINGA CLEANSING BALM £36 (AVAILABLE AT SPACE NK AND OTHER STORES)

If, like me, your skin is suffering after all the Christmas parties and late nights, then you’ll love this cleansing balm. It’s quite indulgent at £36, but I bought this little pot of wonder about 3 months ago, and I still have lots left – a little goes a long, long way! I use it to take off my make up at night and it works like a dream, melting away every trace of make up in just a few moments. You then wipe it away using the cleansing cloth that’s included with a little warm water and your skin is left squeaky clean and rehydrated. It’s perfect for all skin types but particularly for soothing sensitive skin and rejuvenating dull and mature skin. It doubles as a calming and hydrating mask if left on the skin for ten minutes.

Brought to you by Councillor Frank Warby Contact Frank on 07818 455472 or email frankjwarby@aol.com

I hope you all had a Happy Christmas and enjoy a prosperous new year. Only two months until spring, but until then it will be a cold two months. December was an unusual month, the excellent Christmas Fayre, put on by St Edmundsbury Borough Council which brought 120,000 people to Bury. Yes, it caused disruption to our routine, traffic, school runs, one way systems, however, most reports say it was well worth it, especially for the local economy. Through the year, Bid for Bury puts on several events like the Beach, the Farmers Market and many other events which can and does sometimes cause a bit of chaos, but we all enjoy them. Thanks Bid 4 Bury.

TRAVELLERS PARKING PROBLEMS On the 10th December the travellers left their site just off Mount Road and moved onto the drive towards the Flying Fortress. They said they moved in order to clear up the old site. I have visited the old site and it is in good, clean condition. A letter was sent out from St Edmundsbury stating that the travellers would be moving to another site on Compiegne Way. My understanding is that a site was being prepared on the water meadow just down from the tesco roundabout. By the time you are reading this I wonder where the travellers will be. The travellers have applied for planning permission for a permanent site, the application goes before St Edmundsbury Borough Council in February for consideration.

08 | JANUARY 2015

I have had several emails about bad parking around our estate. In particular, commercial vehicles parking opposite each other, therefore blocking vehicles passing. A few weeks ago, when a refuse vehicle was unable to pass between two cars it left residents with bins not emptied. Please report these careless drivers. Another related issue is corner cutting, if you look at most of the entrances to our roads and closes you will see large gouges caused by drivers cutting the corner, the worst example of this is the entrance to Tesco where cars have been damaged by the depth of the holes. Take the corner correctly by using the space allocated. A little care goes a long way.

Lawson Surgery

I have been asked to repeat the ongoing problem with missed appointments both for doctors and nurses. Should you not be able to keep an appointment all you have to do is phone, email or text. As it is, many people who need to see a doctor or nurse can’t because they are fully booked, then someone decides not to turn up and an appointment is missed which could have been used. Come on, please make the effort to let the surgery know, it might be someone near to you needing that slot. Rant over!

OTHER NEWS There is a lot going on this year, the link road, the football/sports centre, new upper school, extensions to our primary schools. To top it all we will have the national and local elections. These elections will be a little complicated, you will be voting for your MP and your local borough councillors, not forgetting your town council. Whatever your political views, please use your vote.

W hat’s been happening at...

ABBOTS GREEN Community Primary School We are coming towards the end of this term’s project ‘I am a small part of the world’. It has been a very enjoyable term with lots of fantastic learning happening across the school. In KS2 we have learnt about being part of the local community, the functions of the human body and most recently World War 2. Whilst learning about WW2, one area that we focused on was rationing. We looked at when certain foods were rationed, how long they were rationed for and people’s allowance of certain items. The children really enjoyed this topic and so we made our own WW2 soup. Using their knowledge of foods that were rationed the children had to design, make and evaluate their own soup. In Sunflower class we decided to make a delicious leek and potato soup. The children wanted it to be a vegetable soup as they knew vegetables were not rationed and people would have grown their own vegetables. As a class we created our own method which linked to our recent learning in

10 | JANUARY 2015

English when we had to write and follow instructions. We then made the soup all together and all the children had a special job to do. ‘I got to wash the leeks’, Oliver said. Theo liked cutting the butter in half because he had to ‘judge it’ carefully. It was a very enjoyable lesson and the soup tasted very good. We evaluated our work and we had some lovely feedback. ‘We could have made it even better by using red onion to give it more colour’, Mollie told us. Hopefully next time this is an improvement we can make. This term’s project has been very enjoyable and the children have been thoroughly interested in learning about WW2. We look forward to the Spring Term with our next project ‘Fly me to the Moon’.

A very big welcome from West Suffolk Hospital Charity

Dear reader,

We wanted to use our first column in this fantastic magazine to say hello and tell you a little bit about ourselves. West Suffolk Hospital has actually been a registered charity since 1995. In the last couple of years, the hospital has not been immune to the wider economic problems we have all faced, so it has taken a more proactive stance towards fundraising. As with so many of us, the Hospital has shown amazing care to my family – my mum, my brother, my God-daughter, my wife and my two sons. I started fundraising, on a voluntary basis, when my son George was born six weeks premature. The care shown by everyone in the hospital, from Neonatal Unit staff to a hospital director who made a special point in making sure my wife and I were ok, will never be forgotten. I was honoured to be appointed Fundraising Manager 18 months ago. In 2015, we will organise five big events throughout the year – a charity football match against Ipswich Town legends, a sky dive, Walk for Wards, It’s a Bury Knockout 2015 and our Christmas online auction. Over the last year, we have made a sustained effort to support as many areas of the hospital as possible – from those helping our youngest patients right through to the oldest.

Our big appeal throughout 2014 was the Forget-Me-Not Dementia Campaign and over the next few months, we will be focusing on other areas while never stopping fundraising for this crucial campaign.

But we are also here to support each and every fundraising effort in our generous community. Julie Fountain and We are here to help with Maggie Woodhouse fundraising, donations, legacies – any way people would like to help their hospital. We are constantly blown away by the level of support and generosity we encounter on a daily basis and our vow is to continue working hard to further enhance the care and support West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust offers to patients and families.

If you have any questions about fundraising, any of the events mentioned above or how you can help the hospital, please contact fundraising@wsh.nhs.uk or call 01284 712952 12 | JANUARY 2015

big thank you to all who attended the AGM in November and an apology for the poor quality of the speaker system.

Run” - where are the Traffic Flow Surveys that say different, have they been done to the highest of standards or one which the Council could afford?

Our aim for that meeting was to obtain, from the speakers, updates on their areas of expertise, which they did and whether or not there is a comprehensive “Joint Transport (Infrastructure) Strategy “ for future planned developments within and surrounding Bury St Edmunds, for which there is apparently not.

Schools, should the transport of pupils to and from school be part of a “Joint Transport Strategy “? At present Abbots Green School is coping with car drop off and pickups and it remains to be seen what the future brings. However Sebert Wood School has problems now and the Headmaster has a target date for his input whilst the County Council and Borough Council are in conflict over one of the proposed solutions involving “Park and Stride”. The problems arise from the amount of traffic and irresponsible/inconsiderate parking when delivering or retrieving pupils. Not everyone is able to cycle, scoot or walk to school and the reasons for are legion and legitimate so how should the problem be dealt with? Should the Council or Education Authorities provide transport, parking or drop off

We already know that the Eastern Relief Road, servicing the Business Park,is going ahead and will do little to ease traffic flow on Moreton Hall. The suggested replacement of roundabouts with traffic lights and prioritising traffic flow to the Sudbury bound A134 is designed to keep traffic free flowing on the A14, not Moreton Hall. The building of 500 houses on Moreton Hall and 1250 across the tracks at Cattershall, could? Or will? turn Moreton Hall into The north east Bury St Edmunds “Rat

points near schools, would parents/guardians be prepared to contribute voluntarily to a scheme? Residents have made known some reservations about the new secondary school but if needed no action can be taken until the plans are made public. My last question, what is to be done to get it right? And the answer let the Councils know what WE want. Complain, suggest, ask for what we need and thank them if you think they’ve got it right. So communicate directly with your County, Borough and Town Councillors, directly to Council Departments or via MHRA. A piece of good news about Flying Fortress Park, play equipment should be installed by April 2015 and Taylor Wimpey are dealing with the areas subject to flooding.

great spotted woodpeckers BY WOODLANDS WAY

T

wo of the UK’s woodpecker species live on Moreton Hall. Green woodpeckers are occasionally seen on grassland pecking for invertebrates, and great spotted woodpeckers are occasionally seen in our woods. the third woodpecker species, lesser spotted woodpecker, is now rare in the UK and has not been seen in this area. Great spotted woodpeckers are blackbirdsized beautiful black, white birds which need older trees. They have a very distinctive bouncing flight and spends most of their time clinging to tree trunks and branches, often trying to hide on the side away from you. A few years ago, a pair nested in Home Covert. In the spring and summer, great spotted woodpeckers mostly eat and feed their young on caterpillars found on leaves high in the trees. In winter, however, they use their sharp and

tough beaks to excavate beetles and grubs from dead wood. Dead wood on the ground is an important foraging source, as is dead branches on trees. Woodland Ways has a habitat of leaving dead wood on the ground, normally with smaller branches in piles for hedgehogs and toads to hibernate under, but also logs are left for a wider range of species. Not many people want a dead branch overhanging their house or over a path, but where a dead branch is on a tree in the middle of a wood, where no-one goes, the risk is minimal. These dead branches are important to great spotted woodpeckers. This spring, if you hear a woodpecker drumming on a tree, it is a male trying to attract a female and scare off other males simultaneously. Try and track down the source of the noise; you may be lucky enough to find a nest!

Join us at Woodland Ways... Why not join in with a Woodland Ways work party to help improve the Moreton Hall woods? No experience is needed and all are welcome; we’ll show you what to do. This brings the total number of staff within the office who hold the MARLA qualification (Member of the Association of Residential Lettings Agents) to three. Motion is lotion

M

By The Abbeyfields Clinic

otion is lotion. That’s the key principle to physiotherapy. But it is often difficult after an injury to decide on the best approach eg. rest/ activity, heat/ice, treatment/no treatment. Everybody and ‘every body’ has it’s unique needs when it comes to healing and rehabilitation, depending on your age, health status, the length of time you have had the problem for, and what you want to get back doing. By accounting for all these things together we can work with you to come up with a realistic and achievable plan to get back to your best. This plan will be individual to you and your goals and may involve hands on or other therapies to help you gain and maintain motivation and momentum.

The key part of a physiotherapy consultation is the conversation at the initial appointment. Each question is designed to extract the right information about your injury so we can form, modify and prioritise clinical judgements that will allow accurate and appropriate testing, and ultimately a diagnosis. From here the journey to recovery begins. A quick appointment is key to exploring and offering the best management options.

The Abbeyfields Clinic have physiotherapy appointments available within 48 hours and often we can get you in the same day. We have appointments available from 7.30am to 8.00pm and Saturday mornings to accommodate shift workers and those who have long commutes, or simply cant get time off work during the day.

This time last year I had a choice in terms of losing weight... join one of the big diet clubs OR hot foot it to the gym. Follow my own diet (hmm, tricky this one), put on my headphones and do solitary exercise on treadmills... Welcome to the 19th hole, a place for golf tips, reviews and everything golf related.

Firstly I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year, and thank you all for reading this article up until now. It’s been great passing on some tips and ideas to you all and I plan to bring you all bigger and better things in 2015. It’s at this time of year you can reflect back on your golfing year, whether it’s been good, bad or the same as every year. 2015 doesn’t have to be a normal year for your golf game though, why not make improvements to your game this year and see your golf improve whatever your skill level. Know your strengths and weaknesses - Know what you need to improve If you were to ask most golfers what their strengths and weaknesses are, they would give you different answers throughout the year depending on how well they were playing at the time. It’s important to know if these areas are where you need to practice and improve, an easy way to do this is to keep stats on your games of golf. At first you may find this process a little strange, but after a little bit of practice it will become part of your on course routine.

Coaches Tip – LEARN TO LOVE THE SAND

Example: Fairways Hit From Tee Shots.

Remember you have so much more margin for error with a bunker shot, it’s the only shot in golf where you are not looking to hit the ball. Having said this it is important to take a consistent amount of sand so that you judge the length of the shot and also make sure that you escape the bunker.

On your score card simply mark a tick or cross for a hit or missed fairway. If missed also mark which side you have missed the shot. This quick and simple tip will show you what whether this area needs improvement or if it’s strength in your game.

Bunkers around the green strike fear into the hearts of so many golfers, but with some simple and easy tips to follow you can escape those green side bunkers with ease.

There’s an app for that!

LINE DRILL

FREE GOLF SHOT APP – this is available on both android and apple devices. This allows you to record loads of different stats from your round of golf, it will help to highlight areas that need improvement in 2015. Apps like this help me as a coach, they record vital stats that would make it so much easier to draw up a plan to improve your game.

First line up some golf balls up in the bunker, and then draw a line in the sand about a golf ball width behind the line of golf balls. Work your way along the line entering the sand on the line and making a full follow through to a balanced finish.

I use this app myself to record data from all my competitions and I would highly recommend it. Why not get your friends to download it as well and have a bit of friendly competition who can get the highest stats throughout the year.

The drill shown in the images below highlights a great way to practice your consistent entry point for the club into the sand.

If you focus on entering on the line and taking a consistent amount of sand this drill will allow you to grow your confidence in the sand and you will no longer fear the bunkers. I would suggest that you hit this shot with a lofted wedge either a sand wedge or lob wedge; this will allow the ball flight to be higher and your ball will escape the bunker with ease. I hope 2015 is a great year for you all both on and off the golf course but If you do find yourself struggling with your golf game then please feel free to contact me for any coaching advice or to book a lesson.

January is often the low mood month of dark mornings and evenings and the credit card bills and realisation that the Xmas pounds did pile on! Many people find their energy levels fall and they feel less happy – current research has told us that food can definitely affect our mood as well as our energy levels so let’s look at some simple things you can do to prevent that S.A.D feeling! What we eat and how we eat it, plays an important role in how we feel deficiencies in some essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients can lead to symptoms associated with stress, depression, behavioural problems and physical disease as well! In conjunction with that, when you are faced with a stressful situation, your body eagerly consumes these nutrients, leaving you in short supply. Unless you replenish the stock, your stress symptoms, initially caused by a situation or event, will continue longer than normal because your body has been depleted of the essential nutrients that it needs for optimum brain function.

Brain Function Deficiencies in the following list of nutrients have all been linked to issues with our mental capacities: 1. B1 – Poor concentration 2. B3 – depression, stress 3. B5 – poor memory 4. B6 – depression, poor memory, irritability, stress 5. B12 – poor memory, confusion 6. Folic acid – anxiety, depression 7. Magnesium – anxiety, depression, irritability, stress, insomnia 8. Vitamin C – depression, stress 9. Selenium – depression, irritability 10. Zinc – depression, confusion, blank mind, loss of appetite, lack of motivation 11. Omega 3 – depression, poor memory 12. Tryptophan – depression 13. Vitamin E – stress and heart disease (source: Mental Health Foundation) Here is a Shopping List of Ingredients to Improve Your Mental power • Brown rice (B1, B3, B5, B6, Selenium) • Porridge Oats (B1, B3, B5, B6, Selenium) • Walnuts (magnesium, Omega 3, tryptophan, zinc) • Brazil nuts (selenium) • Pumpkin Seeds (magnesium, Omega 3, zinc) • Sunflower seeds (magnesium, omega 3, zinc and selenium) • Garlic (selenium) • Wholegrain Bread (B vitamins) • Olive Oil (omega 3) • Hemp Oil (omega 3, 6 & 9) • Beans and pulses • Peppers (B1, B3, B5, B6, VC, Magnesium) • Broccoli (B1, B3, B5, B6, Magnesium) • Spinach (Folic Acid) • Bananas (B6, tryptophan) • Oranges (Vitamin C) • Strawberries (Vitamin C) • Chicken (B12, tryptophan)

Bend andBlend

A combination of dietary tips, mind/body exercises and latest research blended together to promote health & vitality.

By Carole Baker

Director, The Self Centre

The remedies and advice suggested in this article are the personal opinion of the author. Please also inform your GP if you are planning to take any natural remedies and you are already on long term prescribed drugs. Always consult a qualified Complementary Practitioner, never self medicate. • • • • •

Salmon (B12, Omega 3, Selenium, zinc) Tuna (B12, Omega 3, selenium, zinc) Liver, Beef & Lamb Natural Yoghurts (B12) Eggs (B12)

Foods specifically for stress reduction: Almonds -Are you ever looking for something you can really dig your teeth into when you’re stressed? Try crunching on almonds to get some aggression out. A good source of Vitamin B2 and E, as well as magnesium and zinc, almonds are high in fat, but most of the fat is unsaturated. Like vitamin C, vitamin E has been shown to fight the free radicals associated with stress, and in particular, those free radicals that cause heart disease. Oranges - A German study found that vitamin C helps reduce stress and return blood pressure and cortisol to normal levels after a stressful situation. Vitamin C is also well-known for boosting your immune system. Sweet Potatoes - Sweet potatoes can be particularly stress-reducing because they can satisfy the urge you get for carbohydrates and sweets when you are under a great deal of stress. They are packed full of betacarotene and other vitamins, and the fibre helps your body to process the carbohydrates in a slow and steady manner. DARK CHOCOLATE (Hurray!!) A study published in the Journal of Proteome Research found that consuming 40 grams (about 1.4 ounces) of dark chocolate daily for a period of two weeks reduced levels of the stress hormone cortisol and our fight-or-flight hormones. The authors also concluded that their study “provides strong evidence that a daily consumption of 40 g of dark chocolate during a period of 2 weeks is sufficient to modify the metabolism of ... healthy human subjects.” Other studies had already suggested that chocolate relieved stress but this study provided evidence of the biochemical mechanism at work in relieving stress.

Vitamin D Previously thought to just cause SAD as lack of sunlight in the winter months means the body cant manufacture it effectively but it is now estimated that the epidemic of vitamin D deficiency affects one billion people. No one is exactly sure why this is happening apart from the fact that we spend too much time indoors and when we go out into the sun, we lather sunscreen on ourselves.

than sun block haters, sun-phobes need more than sun worshipers, and ill people may need more than well people. Deficiencies in Vitamin D can cause: • Fatigue • General muscle pain and weakness • Muscle cramps • Joint pain • Chronic pain • Weight gain • High blood pressure • Restless sleep • Poor concentration • Headaches • Bladder problems • Constipation or diarrhoea Plus it has been linked to • Osteoporosis and Osteopenia • 17 varieties of Cancer (including breast, prostate and colon) • Heart disease • High blood pressure • Obesity • Metabolic Syndrome and Diabetes • Autoimmune diseases • Multiple sclerosis • Rheumatoid arthritis • Osteoarthritis • Bursitis • Gout • Infertility and PMS • Parkinson’s Disease • Depression and Seasonal Affective Disorder • Alzheimer’s Disease • Chronic fatigue syndrome • Fibromyalgia • Chronic Pain • Periodontal disease • Psoriasis How to increase your uptake of Vitamin D • Wild Salmon, Fresh Mackerel or Sardines • Tinned tuna in oil • Pork ribs • Free range eggs • Shitake mushrooms • Organic beef liver

How much vitamin D do I need?

Alternatively please see a qualified therapist for a supplement and further advice.

How much vitamin D you need varies with age, body weight, % of body fat, latitude, skin coloration, season of the year, use of sun block, individual variation in sun exposure, and – probably – how ill you are.

You can contact Debbie Greenslade at info@ buryhomeopaths.co.uk or visit her page on our website With thanks to www.themindsanctuary.com a fabulous resource and Dr Frank Lipton

As a general rule, old people need more than young people, big people need more that little people, fat people need more than skinny people, northern people need more than southern people, dark-skinned people need more than fair skinned people, winter people need more than summer people, sun block lovers need more

T

his month to help you all start those new year fitness resolutions I’m going to share with you 5 Nutrition Facts that should be common sense (But Aren’t)

PT

JOE

HAPPY NEW YEAR! I HOPE YOU ALL HAD A WONDERFUL CHRISTMAS. AND WELCOME TO THE NEW SOUTHGATE DIRECTORY READERS, MY NAME IS JOE SADLER AND I HAVE BEEN A QUALIFIED PERSONAL TRAINER FOR 5 YEARS, WORKING FROM THE MORETON HALL HEALTH CLUB.

1. You Don’t Need to Eat Every 2-3 hours - I get asked a lot of times by members and clients about this, you really don’t need to be constantly eating in the order to lose weight. Studies have shown that smaller, more frequent meals have no effect on fat burning or body weight. Eating every 2-3 hours is inconvenient and unnecessary for the majority of people. Everyone is individual and you need to work out when is best for you to eat, what types of foods you should be eating and how to fit this around your life. I never give the same nutrition plan because how can a male 40 years old, 2 children, working shifts looking to lose body fat have the same nutrition plan as a 19 year old college female looking to build muscle. 2. Never trust mainstream media for Nutrition Information - Mainstream media is part of the reason for all the nutrition confusion out there. Stories/ studies are often taken out of context looking to make headlines. Find quality sources for your information. Not someone or a company who is working on commission to sell a product, shake, juice etc. 3. Low Fat Does Not Equal Healthy - The “low-fat” diet promoted by the mainstream nutrition guidelines is a failure. Numerous studies show that it

doesn’t work, neither for weight loss or disease prevention. This led to a vast amount of processed “low-fat” foods to be brought into the market, because the foods taste bad without the fat, the food manufactures added a whole bunch of sugar to them instead. Foods that are naturally low-fat like fruits and vegetables are great but processed food with “low-fat” on the label are usually loaded with unhealthy ingredients. 4. Fruit Juices - A lot of people believe that fruit juices are healthy. It seems to make sense because they come from fruit. However, fruit juices contain just as much sugar as sugary soft drinks like coca cola. There is no fibre in them and no chewing resistance, making it very easy to consume huge quantities of sugar. If you’re trying to avoid sugar for health reasons, then you should avoid fruit juices. 5. Health is about way more than how much you weigh - People focus too much on just the weight gain/ loss. The truth is that health goes way beyond that. Many obese people are metabolically healthy, while many normal weight people have the same metabolic problems associated with obesity. I ask my clients to focus on energy levels, mood, productivity, sex drive, muscle mass, body fat percentage, performance in the gym, performance of their sport, ability to carry out day to day activities. Judge your health on many factors not just what you see when you stand on a scale.

If you have any questions you would like to ask please do not hesitate in asking. Joe Sadler Personal Trainer M: 07917 714557 E: ptjoesadler@hotmail.com

COOL WAYS

to beat the Winter blues, keep your energy high and mood lifted Winter is in full force. As the days are shorter and the nights are colder, even the best of us can get a little down. The “winter blues” are characterised by the mild depression, lack of motivation, and low energy that many people experience during this cold season. Luckily, there’s a lot you can do to both prevent the blues from coming on and get yourself back to normal if they’re already here.

These healthy foods provide your body (and mind) with nutrients, and stabilise your blood sugar and your energy levels.

GET SOME SUN Most people know that sunlight provides us with Vitamin D. But did you know that it also improves your mood? In winter we spend less and less time outdoors. Lack of sunlight can cause many us to become depressed—without knowing why! Similar to exercise, sunlight exposure releases neurotransmitters in the brain that affect mood. Try to spend a little more time outdoors. Keep your shades up during the day to let more light in. continued on next page... JANUARY 2015 | 29

HEALTH & BEAUTY

EMBRACE THE SEASON Instead of always avoiding the cold and the snow—look for the best that it has to offer! Take up a winter sport like ice skating, snowboarding or even sledging! Enjoy these opportunities while they last—after all, they’re only here a few months per year. Staying active will boost your energy. Seeing winter in a positive light, with all the fun activities that it has to offer, will keep your spirits high.

GET SOCIAL SUPPORT Don’t underestimate the power of friends, family, mentors, colleagues, and neighbours. Who can you turn to when you’re down and need a pick-me-up? Keep a mental list of these special people and don’t be afraid to ask for help or encouragement when you need it. Something as simple as a phone call,

a chat over coffee, or a nice email or letter can brighten your mood.

CATCH SOME ZZZZ’S People naturally want to sleep a little bit more during the winter. But with all we have going on, sometimes sleep is the first thing to go. With a little time management, and some selfdiscipline, you can meet your shut-eye needs. Aim for 7-8 hours each night, and try to keep your bedtime and waking time consistent. That way, your sleeping patterns can normalise and you’ll have more energy. Try not to oversleep— those 12 hour snoozes on the weekend can actually make you MORE tired. Don’t forget naps! A short (10-30 minute) afternoon nap may be all you need to re-energise midday.

Happy New Year!

Country Farm Meats,

YOUR LOCAL BUTCHER BY SALLY WALTERS

C

ountry Farm Meats have just had their busiest Christmas ever with hundreds of turkeys flying out the door (well, not literally ‘flying’), but anyway, it’s safe to say owner Sam Mooney has probably seen enough turkeys for a while! But as the company look forward to another successful year, they continue to pride themselves in the fact that all their produce comes from a 15 mile radius of the shop, with beef and game from Euston Estate, chickens from

Haughley and pork from Crossways Farm which is literally next door, it’s as local as it gets! Sam makes all the sausages himself and the bacon is cured on site. They stock a huge selection of meats and game, as well as local honey, sauces, free range eggs, handmade curry kits and delicious ready to bake pies. Their ‘meat of the week’ packs are really popular with their regulars and from only £28 you can feed a family for a whole week, and we think that’s a fantastic deal.

At Country Farm Meats you’ll find a warm and friendly welcome awaits you, as well as helpful staff on hand to give you advice and a good quality service. There is plenty of free parking and they’re very easy to find, just go left at the crossroads in Great Barton by The Bunbury Arms. It’s only 5 minutes by car from the Moreton Hall. If you are a believer in shopping locally and supporting your local independent shops, then you’ll love the personal service you receive at Country Farm Meats.

CHAIRMAN COUNTS POUNDS AND PENNIES TO RAISE £675 FOR CHILDREN WITH CANCER In the 11th year of the Suffolk Summer Sixes’ fundraising for CLIC Sargent, Colin Houghton, Chairman of Moreton Hall Social Club has added to this year’s fantastic total by emptying the Chairman’s Bottle which contained an astounding £641. Mr Houghton said of the donation: “It might just seem like odd pennies but thanks to all the members’ contributions, it really adds up to a great donation to help children and young people with cancer ”. Colin Green, Chairman of the Suffolk Summer Sixes Darts league also contributed to the bottle’s total taking it to £675. Mr Green said, “The League is extremely proud to be a committed supporter of CLIC Sargent and we are thrilled to have raised so much for them over the last 11 years. We’ve already got some really exciting plans in motion for next year’s tournament!”

Professional, Reliable, Friendly & Local

Daisy Turner, fundraising manager for Suffolk said; “We are so grateful to Mr Haughton, and to all those who have contributed to the Chairman’s Bottle. Last year, we provided 67 families with support here in Suffolk, which is why the continued support of the Summer Sixes is so important.”

Did you get a new puppy

o

Many people receive the gift of a puppy or kitten. Unfortunately, this is not always the best gift to

g

Each year many puppies and kittens, given as Christmas gifts, are surrendered to animal shelters or rescue organisations, so if you do have a new addition to the family, here is some information to help you with the transition of having a new puppy or kitten. Whether you’ve had a puppy or kitten in the past, or you’re a first-time owner, here are a few helpful tips to help you and your family have a smooth transition.

To make sure your puppy or kitten is healthy, register him/her with your local vet. They will give them a full medical check over and give you advice if needed.

Register with a Vet

you find a food you and your pet are happy with, stick with it. Paying more for food on a weekly or monthly basis will pay off in the long run with less gastrointestinal problems as your pet ages.

Diet

Exercise

Choosing the right diet for your puppy or kitten is very important. With so many choices of food on the market, how do you know you’re making the right choice? Generally, with pet food, you get what you pay for. What we mean by this, is that while premium diets do generally cost more, it’s because they are generally better quality. Changing diets often or abruptly can be bad for your puppy or kitten as well. Once 44 | JANUARY 2015

Puppies and kittens need a lot of exercise. You can get kitten toys where you can play with him or her, and you can get toys where he or she can play alone. Both types of toys are important, and it’s recommended you get some of each kind of toy. While kittens love to play with people, they are sometimes very content being alone, playing or even sleeping, whereas puppies crave interaction with people.

It is important to carve out some time in the day where you can dedicate some time to interacting with your new puppy. Having toys on hand where you can interact with your puppy is crucial to a well socialised pet.

Flea & Tick Control

Much like with food, there are many different Flea & Tick Control products on the market and, once again, you get what you pay for. If you want a pet that is free of fleas & ticks, invest in a monthly preventative so you can keep these pesky critters out of your home. It is much easier to prevent than it is to rid your home of fleas & ticks. Getting rid of fleas and ticks is possible, but it will take some work, and expense, to do so.

HOME + LIFESTYLE

or kitten for Christmas? to

give, especially if it is to a family other than your own. Worm Prevention

This is an absolute necessity. Should your dog develop worms, the cost of treatment alone would have paid for many years of prevention.

Vaccinations

Many diseases can threaten your puppy and kitten but are preventable with regular vaccinations. Puppies & kittens should receive vaccinations to prevent common diseases beginning at 6-8 weeks of age.

Housetraining

We recommend using a crate to help your puppy with house-training because most dogs are less likely to urinate and defecate in their eating and sleeping area. There is a ‘gastro-colic’ reflex where your puppy will need to defecate within 5-15 minutes of eating. Be sure to take your puppy outside immediately after meals. Your puppy should be taken outside first thing in the morning, every 30 minutes throughout the day (or as often as possible) and at the end of the day, just before bedtime. For kittens, we recommend one additional litter box than the number of cats in the household. If you have three cats, you need four boxes, etc.

Socialisation

The most important time for puppy socialisation is in the first three months of life. It is

essential to begin socialising your puppy early so that they are used to other dogs, cats, children, and people. This can be a challenge since your puppy isn’t fully protected from disease until his/her vaccinations are completed. Well-vaccinated adult pets are a great resource for socialising puppies. Be sure that any pets introduced to your puppy are adult, healthy pets that are up-to-date on vaccinations. Your cat will do a lot better if he or she is socialised at an early age to other dogs, cats, children, and people. However, remember that he is only to be around adult cats (not kittens) who are currently on vaccinations.

Spay/Neuter

If you are not planning to breed your pet, the best time to spay/neuter is often thought of as around six months of age (but later for large breed male dogs). This is recommended for a number of health reasons. There is a very high correlation between the incidence of breast cancer and the number of heat cycles that female dogs have. If your dog is spayed before she goes through her first heat cycle, then she has less than 5% chance of developing breast cancer. The risk increases to 25% by the time she has her second heat cycle.

Males are at risk for prostate cancer and other related tumors after about five years of age if not neutered.

Basic Training

In as little as two thirtyminute sessions per day, you can get in some training with your dog. Depending on the level of training desired, you may need to dedicate more time to training. Don’t feel discouraged, as some puppies are “slow learners” and just need more time. If you feel you are unable to dedicate enough time in the beginning, there are alternatives such as professional trainers. Contact your local vets for recommendations on local trainers.

Common Household Hazards

There are many items in your house or garden that can be deadly to your puppy or kitten. Keep them safe like you would normally around children. This article is only to provide some guidance, and will not suit every single pet. Please consult an expert for any queries you may have.

Always thought your local charity shop was full of stuff nobody really wants? Well think again, we found plenty of lovely outfits (and some designer brands!) at a fraction of the cost you would normally pay in the high street. So if you are saving the pennies in January, why not support the charity shops? Pop in and have a look round. We found the clothes were hardly worn, if not at all, and all set out nicely on the rails so you can browse with ease. Each month, we will be digging out a few bargain outfits from charity shops right here in Bury St Edmunds, see what you think to what we found this month...

team player

BY ANDREW SOUTHWOOD

T

his season has seen my son join the school football team. One of my proudest moments as a parent was watching him wear his match shirt and making his debut… as they lost 10-0 (ish?). To protect the egos and reputations of those involved I will not name the teams or the players, but suffice to say our team is still in its early stages of development, and many of its squad (my son included) are still growing into their roles at every level. Clearly I love football, but I have made a conscious effort not to force it upon my son. However, when the opportunity to play with the other boys every weekend arose, he was very keen to be involved. Most weekends I stand, lukewarm travel mug of coffee in hand, restraining myself from calling out words of wisdom from the side-lines. It’s tricky, but so

54 | JANUARY 2015

far on the whole, I like to think I’ve succeeded. To say that he likes playing is an understatement. His actual involvement in each match is fairly low key (he tends to run away from the ball) but he certainly feels part of the team. It’s mildly frustrating, as at home he never backs out of a challenge on me, yet on the pitch he’s much more uncertain about getting stuck in with the other boys. Similarly the cheeky back heals and turns we practice in the garden somehow never materialise on the pitch. The volunteer coaches deserve special credit. They have more patience than West Suffolk Hospital, and somehow mange to maintain a level of order and respect that most of us parents can only dream of. Their inspiration is such that,

following a 30 second team talk after a heavy defeat, every child comes away beaming with pride and excitement – regardless of the result. What my boy lacks in skill, physical presence, and general ability to actually kick the ball, he makes up for in enthusiasm and fun. Eternally optimistic, he could teach a few Premiership players a thing or two about sportsmanship and keenness. The simulation and aggression has yet to filter down from the professional leagues to him, although I have to say that even at this young age, there are boys who are already copying their idols foolish habits on the pitch. I hasten to add, I do not hold these young lads responsible for their actions – their multi millionaire heroes have more influence than they can possibly imagine, and they should not forget it.

The Third Most Important Thing to Learn at School

Simon Head

There are more than three important things to learn at school, but in aiming to master as many lessons as possible you can lose sight of which ones are more essential than the rest. If you were making a sandwich, you’d resist putting everything of nutritional value in the fridge in it; if you were creating an ideal education, you’d be similarly selective. So what are the crusty bread, brown sauce and sausage of the perfect school sandwich? Elementarily, what provides the meat is Challenge. Challenge is tricky. Too much is stressful, too little is boring: but the right amount develops you. If I tried to lift a car above my head I wouldn’t. If I tried to lift an apple I’d succeed, but I wouldn’t get any stronger. Heaving a bicycle heavenwards would be a move in the right direction, but I’d have to do it again and again before I could graduate to something more impressive. Children need to learn to love Challenge. They should seek it, and schools supply it. A good teacher knows how to set the right challenges for their pupils, and adjust them continuously. A good pupil enjoys challenging themselves, as well as being challenged by others. A school can only get its pupils to this stage by providing different levels, and types, of challenge throughout every day. To get the balance right, a teacher has to understand the potential of each child. Keeping classes to sensible sizes and giving teachers time to study and discuss progress enables this. With the right diet of challenge, individual potential is developed, fulfilled and extended. With the right sandwich, you can lift cars above your head. Simon Head is Headmaster of Moreton Hall Preparatory School. Next Month: The Second Most Important Thing to Learn at School

PAULS PLANT OF THE MONTH

Witch Hazel

Witch hazel is a large winter flowering shrub or small tree growing up to 4 metres high. It also provides attractive autumn leaf colour. In January the flowers have a delicate fragrance of warm citrus spice. Flowers tend to be predominantly yellow, but some varieties have red and orange tinges. Witch hazel will tolerate partial shade, although they bloom better in sunny spots. Witch Hazels are a long-lived and hardy but do not like to be in a frost pocket or an exposed area. Once established, witch hazel are trouble-free. However until established for the first year you will need to water during dry periods. Pruning should take place immediately after flowering, as the flowers bloom on last year’s wood.

What to do in your garden in January Happy new year to all gardeners! Perhaps you are thinking of starting gardening for the first time – here are a few steps to beginning a garden. But first a little seasonal poem... “In the sniffed and poured snow on the tip of the tongue of the year That clouts the spittle like bubbles with broken rooms, An enamoured man alone by the twigs of his eyes, two fires, Camped in the drug-white shower of nerves and food, Savours the lick of the times through a deadly wood of hair In a wind that plucked a goose, Nor ever, as the wild tongue breaks its tombs, Rounds to look at the red, wagged root.” DYLAN THOMAS, JANUARY, 1939

pauls jobs for the month Tools • From experience you don’t need to buy new gardening tools. You can pick up decent tools from second-hand shops and car-boot fairs . However you get what you pay for and a quality spade, fork, rake, hoe, trowel, shears and secateurs will last for years. Cheaper tools will need replacing and frustrate when they no longer do the job properly. Assess Your Space • Consider if you are going to plant in garden beds and borders or raised beds or containers. What kind of sun does the area get? Almost all vegetables and most flowers need a good amount of full sunshine each day. Try to sketch a plan of your new garden, this will help you figure out how much of each plant you can grow and you can also consider succession planting. Figure Out What You Want to Grow • List everything you want to grow. With the price of food rising you might want to grow vegetables. But whether you want to grow herbs, fruit

Pauls

Mulch • To help keep weeds out and water in, cover the soil with a couple of inches of mulch. For a vegetable garden use manure or peat. For perennials, use a longer-lasting mulch, such as bark chips. Maintain Your Garden • Little and often is the best way to go to keep on top of weeds and water plants. or flowers have a look at some gardening books, surf the web or get 1-2 of those free garden seed catalogues and set out a little plan. Clear the ground • On fine days in winter dig over your garden border or vegetable border. Remove all the perennial weeds. Improve the Soil • Give your soil a boost by adding a 2- to 3-inch layer of compost, decayed leaves, dry grass clippings, or old manure into a trench. A trench can be about a spade deep and wide. All of your vegetable peelings can go into this trench.

GARDEN SERVICES

Enjoy the Fruits of your Labour • The exercise will have done you good and nothing tastes quite as good as home grown fruit and veg!

Also this month... • prune wall climbers such as ivy away from window frames and gutters • Raise pots of the ground to ensure compost drains freely • knock snow from branches of evergreen shrubs to prevent branches breaking under the weight • Attract birds to your garden by regularly supplying bird food and fresh water

To Ski or not to Ski?...

Thinking of taking the family to the slopes for the first time? Never been? Turn over for some great tips to help you out before booking up... JANUARY 2015 | 69

HOME + LIFESTYLE

1

Borrow

...First time Skier?

You want to look good, right? Well, put your credit card away this instant. The golden rule of ski wear for beginners is this. Don’t buy: borrow. This goes for men, too. Even if it means wearing your neighbour’s fading all-in-one from way back when. After a few days on the slopes you may decide, as some people do, that skiing is not for you. And you will be stuck with an outfit you’ll never wear again. So borrow as much as you can – gloves, hat, fleece, goggles, sunglasses, ski helmet. Do buy your own thermals though, and ski socks (who likes to borrow socks?).

Accommodation

2

Ski holidays can be dirt cheap – especially if you book a self-catering apartment. But we wouldn’t suggest a self-catering holiday for beginners. A ski resort is a pretty baffling place if you’ve never been to one before, and the way to learn the ropes is to book yourself into a catered ski chalet (or chalet-hotel) run by a British company. In a catered chalet you get meals prepared for you. You also get the services of the resort manager to guide you to the ski hire centre and the nursery slopes; as well as the advice of chalet staff and other guests about the best bars and mountain restaurants. For the first trip, it’s also a good idea to book a chalet company that offers chartered flights and transfers too. That way, you won’t have to worry about driving up to the ski resort yourself. Bear in mind before you book a trip that the price of a week can vary dramatically. Avoid school holidays if you can, instead target the last three weeks of January or early March. You’ll save yourself a small fortune in the process. You can make further savings if you shop around for early or late-booking discounts. But don’t be guided entirely by price – you need to make sure your resort is beginner-friendly. If there are no chalet holidays available in your chosen resort, then pick a hotel as close to the ski school meeting point as you can afford – and book it through a tour operator with a good reputation for the quality of its resort staff.

Practise

The sooner you can get from wobbly snowplough to linked, parallel(ish) turns, the more fun you will have on holiday. One of the best ways to speed up the process is to visit one of Britain’s indoor real snow centres before you go. Essentially, these are giant fridges which make their own snow – and they provide a pretty authentic surface on which to make your first turns. Admittedly, the slopes can be very short. But on your first two days in a ski resort you won’t be let loose on anything bigger – and all you need is a bit of space to get used to skis and ski boots, and master the snowplough. The more time you can get on the snow, the better – so book a day-long course or a programme of lessons if you can. 70 | JANUARY 2015

Get Lessons

4

A lot of adults learn on holidays organised by friends and/or family who can already ski. If you are one of them, then don’t, don’t, DON’T let them be your ski instructors. Pretty soon, they’ll get bored of teaching you the basics and drag you to the top of a vertiginous slope with the dread words, “you’ll be fine”. If you don’t actually hurt yourself, you’ll be so freaked out by the experience you probably won’t want to leave the chalet again until the transfer bus comes to take you back to the airport.

The only way to learn is to book yourself into ski school. The luxury option is to have private classes. Some people will find the unremitting focus on them (and their mistakes) claustrophobic. But most thrive on this kind of attention and make rapid progress. The cost of private lessons can, however, be astronomical (especially in the A-list French resorts, although private tuition in Italian resorts is notably cheaper). The cheaper option is to join a five or six day course of group lessons, with classes in the morning and free time after lunch to practise what you have learnt. You should enrol for the course at the same time as you book your holiday, but don’t just blindly book the ski school offered by your tour operator. Check first to see if there’s a British ski school in your resort. Oh, and don’t forget to take out specialist ski insurance.

Get Fit

5

The last thing you want is to spend hundreds of pounds on a ski holiday, only to find you are too tired to get out of bed on the third morning of the trip. Taken in isolation, the snowplough – the classic beginner’s manoeuvre – is not demanding. But it is if you practise it over and over again for six hours a day, at altitude, for an entire week. The only way to make sure you have the energy – both physical and mental – to enjoy the experience is get in shape long before you hit the slopes. Non gym-bunnies, don’t panic. There are lots of ways to get your heart rate up and strengthen those leg muscles in your every day routine: take the stairs instead of lifts or escalators; cycle or power walk to work instead of driving. We recommend that you start working out 12 weeks before the beginning of your holiday.

6

Be prepared

The weather changes in the mountains, all the time. you’ll avoid the usual mistake of dressing for the weather you wake up to, and nothing else. Yes, it may be a pleasant +3C in the sunshine when you leave the chalet, but if the cloud comes down and the wind picks up it could be -13C in an instant. It works the other way too: you dress for a blizzard, the sun come out, and you sweat out what feels like half your body weight. The only way to cope with the changes, is to carry a rucksack. Always pack spare clothing (unless you are wearing it all), as well as something to drink.

Be Safe

7

Remember, skiing is only as dangerous as you want to make it. You can drop big cliffs, ski in avalanche-prone areas, and weave in and out of trees at speed if you want to. But you can also cruise gentle groomed pistes, wearing a helmet and following all the rules of the road. That’s the beauty of skiing – you can move at your own pace and ultimately, you decide where you want to go.

Safe and happy Skiing!

Local entrepreneurs

start new business venture

Rich Future was started by three young people, myself (Olivia Banks, 23) Bradley Banks (20) and Alex Owen (20). We all had the same idea, to make the best T-Shirts and Clothing around within a brand that would stand out. We are all captivated by high fashion, street fashion and music so therefore wanted to create something that would represent this.

At Rich Future we are committed to making the best quality items possible but at affordable prices. All Items are intricately made with each detail being just as important as the next. This is why everything, from the wash care labels to the materials and printing is made, sourced

and carried out in the UK! Something that is very important to us, 100% British through and through. We have just launched our brand new website www.richfuture.co.uk and are hoping to be featured in stores around East Anglia in the New Year with only exclusivity to some shops. It has taken us a good year to get where we are today doing everything ourselves, from the designing, marketing, sourcing, website, photography etc... and saving every bit we could to get through the process, being three young entrepreneurs not many people always want to believe in you.

Unwanted Christmas P However heavy your hints to family and friends, chances are you unwrapped do with this Christmas. What should you do with it?

Return the item to the retailer Retailers are not obliged to give exchanges or refunds on goods that are not faulty, but many will do so. An increasing number offer gift receipts, particularly on items such as clothes, so you might have the paperwork you need to get an exchange or refund. The gift receipt won’t say how much it cost, but will probably stipulate the last day you can return the item for a refund or exchange. If there is no gift receipt, you could ask the giver for it. If you are worried about hurting their feelings, you could try and get an exchange without a receipt, assuming there are labels on the items indicating where it came from. 80 | JANUARY 2015

Many retailers will offer refunds or exchanges without receipts, but only at the most recent price, so if your present is now in the sale the value of what you get back will be discounted accordingly.

Send it back It’s quite possible your gift was bought online. If it was from a retailer with a high-street presence you are likely to be able to take unwanted gifts back to a store for an exchange or refund. Some retailers, offer exchanges and refunds on online purchases in store, instead of a receipt you will need the despatch note or invoice as proof of purchase. One thing to bear in mind is that the person who gave the present is unlikely to have paid in cash; the retailer could insist that a refund is given via a gift token, or on the

card that was used to make the purchase. It could be more tricky if your gift came from an internet-only retailer. If the gift was sent directly from the retailer to you, there should have been order details with it. Amazon has a returns page for people in this situation and promises not to tell the person who bought it that it’s going back. However, unless there has been a mistake, it will deduct the cost of the return from the gift certificate it will give you in exchange. But with a general gift that has no order documents proving the purchase was from a particular retailer, you could be stuck.

Give your gift to charity Your unwanted present could be a welcome gift to a local charity shop. Most will be very happy to

at least one gift you felt you don’t know what to get books, CDs and games, though there are items they cannot accept for safety reasons, and most will decline perishable goods – so you may have to find another home for that box of orange creams.

Sell it One person’s unwanted gift is another’s dream-present-thatnobody-picked-up-the-hints-about, and you might find someone willing to pay to take it off your hands. Many people’s first port of call is eBay but you will also need to work out a charge for p&p, unless you state collection only. Or, you could try local listings websites.

Hold a gift-swapping party The perfect excuse for a gathering in January. Invite your friends round and tell them all to bring their

unwanted gifts. You might fancy a new scarf, while someone else might love your surplus candle. You might want to draw up some rules first; perhaps let everyone pick one thing first, then go round the circle again, or draw lots for things that more than one person desires. Anything left could go to the charity shop.

Keep it, to give as a gift next year Give it now, or wait, save it for a birthday or Christmas 2015. (But remember to note down who gave it to you so you don’t simply give it straight back next year!)

Christ Church

MORETON HALL

I WOULD LIKE TO WISH YOU ALL A VERY PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR AND HOPE YOU HAD A TERRIFIC CHRISTMAS. WE HAD A WONDERFUL CHRISTMAS AT CHRIST CHURCH, MORETON HALL.

A

pproximately two thousand people attended our services. That’s not a misprint – it’s absolutely true. So my first thank you goes to all those people who attended the District Guiding and Brownie carol service, the Community Choir concert, the Bury St. Edmunds Concert Band and Sebert Wood Singers concert and the Sebert Wood School Christmas play. That’s not to mention the Shoebox Service, the Christingle Service, the Crib Services, the Nine Lessons and Carols and the services at Midnight on Christmas Eve and on Christmas Day. My heart really goes out to the community for their positive support for both the Shoebox appeal and the food-bank. When it was finished two hundred and eighty six shoeboxes were sent from this estate to Serbia. That’s two hundred and eighty six smiling happy faces which we have created. Also over one

hundred and fifty food-bank bags went out and many of them were returned, emptied and sent out again. I cannot calculate how many families have been blessed and helped this Christmas time and early into the New Year by your generosity. From the bottom of my heart I want to say thank you. It is so wonderful to see the community coming together to help people in need whether they are in Bury St. Edmunds or overseas.

To that end, for the first three months of the year we will be preaching and teaching to answer the question, ‘What on Earth am I here for?’ We will all be reading a book by the international author, Rick Warren, as well as listening to sermons and attending small groups. If this is a question that is causing you to think at the present time, why not join us? It has every possibility of changing your life and giving you the answers you really need.

But as we look to the New Year, with all its daunting economic and employment problems and the rapidly fading prospect of world peace, what should we be doing? Well, we often resolve to do many things in the New Year and we often fail. But perhaps the question we should be asking is, ‘Who am I and what am I here for?’ Once we answer that question, we will know what we should be doing to become the people we were meant to be.

Also at the end of January on Sunday 25th, we will be holding a joint service with Horringer Court Christian Fellowship during which many adults will be baptised by total immersion. It will be a wonderful event to observe but an even greater event to take part in. Why not come along and see what a difference faith has made to the people, young and old, who will be making this public commitment. We ended the year doing lots of things that brought a smile to the face of Jesus. We fed the hungry and we blessed little children. Why don’t we start the year with Jesus, learning more about Him, finding out what on Earth we are here for, and learning to receive Him into our hearts? He is the best way to start the year and it’s the best way to restart your life. Why not consider it?

With every good wish, Yours sincerely, Revd. Canon Jonathan Ford. Minister Christ Church Moreton Hall 82 | JANUARY 2015

Now they watch helplessly as the dragon flies off to rain fiery vengeance on Lake-town. Only Bard (Luke Evans) can stop the enraged beast now, using the last remaining dragon-slaying black arrow. RESTART THE HEART

OUR COMMUNITY’S DEFIBRILLATOR APPEAL

Do you know anyone who has a heart problem? Automatic defibrillators are used to restart the heart following a cardiac arrest. They are located in public places and can safely be used by anyone whilst waiting for the arrival of an ambulance. Many lives have been saved by one. There are already several in Bury but none in our locality. The Southgate Community Partnership is fundraising for one to be installed outside of our Community Centre – also to serve the shops, pub and primary school. We started in May last year with a target of £2500 and we have raised around £800 to date from the proceeds of our Fun Day and two generous gifts from Southgate Church. Our aim is to get a defibrillator installed in our area during 2015 so watch this space!

news

Hello all and a very happy new year to you! Hope the season’s festivities have been kind to you and you’re not starting 2015 with too much of the post seasonal blues! To kick off January on Saturday 17th we’ve got the Big Fat Quiz of 2014 to test your knowledge on all things in the recent past. It is £1 to get in, as with all our quizzes, and the money raised from the entrance fee goes towards the cash prizes for the victorious, so bring your friends, you family and make that cash prize worth playing for! Starts from 8pm, and all are welcome! Then on Saturday 31st January, we’re holding a race night hosted by Phil the Rhythm to fundraise for Age UK. There will be lots to do on the night, including a raffle with prizes galore, and other mini games on the night. On 26th April our bar manager Clare is running the London Marathon to raise funds for Age UK, so any support to help her reach her fundraising target, and have a brilliant night would be appreciated! There will also be a coach running on April 26th for those wanting to come down and watch the marathon, it will pick up from the centre in the early hours of the morning and come back from London later in the evening! Details of prices and timings will be available closer to the time. As some may be aware it is the Club’s 30th Anniversary in 2015, so in honour of long service to our members we are having a year where we are celebrating the fact at every available opportunity! Our first bonus for the members is that each month, on the 30th of every month (sorry February), we will be upping our percentage discount on drinks from 13.5% to a whopping 30%! Available during the opening hours of each day, we will be discounting our drinks to members (non-members will still pay the same price) on whatever day the 30th falls on each month. So if you haven’t already signed up for membership for 2015, then let that be

an incentive to do so! If you would like to sign up, membership forms are available at the bar – you can have a family/ couple membership for £15 for the whole year, and a single membership for £7.50. If you are of the vintage age of 65 or over, you are entitled to a free membership which gives you all the benefits of a paid membership. The benefits are 13.5% off all drinks, entrance to a brilliant clubroom with free events and Sky/BT Sports on a big screen, and 10% off hall hire should you have an event here. Our membership base has grown from year to year, to the point where 2014 nearly took us to 1,000 members, so we’re hoping to crack that mark in 2015! In May, on Monday the 4th for the early bank holiday we will be having the official 30th anniversary celebration where we will put on a BBQ and have lots of fun things to do to celebrate! Other events during the year to celebrate will include lots of 80’s themed nights, including an eighties quiz, and a reprise of the popular 80’s night with cheesy classics! Keep watching out for more information in here or our member’s emails! In February in the clubroom we are doing a Mr & Mrs Quiz on the 14th in honour of Valentine’s Day, and then later on in the month on the 28th we’re hosting a Casino Night, where we will hire tables for you all to have a go on and award prizes to the highest rollers of the evening! At the centre we are entering our 15th year of being in the current building and we’re happy at the progress we have made, all made possible by the support of our

surrounding community. We have built regular affiliated groups that use us on a daily basis to help facilitate their service and us in turn – we do have a regular space available on Friday mornings and Wednesday evenings – if you’re interested in starting a group and need a space to make this possible, give Kerrie a ring on - 01284 763402 to enquire, and we’ll be happy to discuss your requirements. We also have a very versatile space available for hire for events and unique celebrations. We have held wedding receptions, Burns Nights, Ladies Nights, engagements parties, Christmas Parties, and proved that far from being a “community centre hall” we can transform the space into something that represents the tone of your event as well as amazing value for money. Again, if you have a celebration you’re planning, then come down and see the space for yourself or give us a ring on 01284 763402. With the festive season over, it’s tempting to relax for a while but at the centre we’re going full throttle with new events, promotions and things to do in 2015. Our events schedule will include things to do for all the family, so make sure you keep an eye out for our communications where you’ll bound to find something that catches your eye! Hope to see you all soon, hope you have the best start to 2015 you can!
