EDITOR’S LETTER
march WELCOME TO THE
This month I love..
CHEVRON’S
ISSUE
Hello and welcome to the March issue of the Moreton Hall Directory. Happy Mother’s Day to all you mummies. Being a mum myself, I love March, because that means I get a day to be spoilt by the family (hint, hint hubby and kids!), If you don’t want to wait until that special day to be pampered look at page 30 where we give you some ideas on how to treat yourself, any day of the week! We have listed some fab restaurants and pubs in the area, so if you fancy being taken out for Mother’s Day, why not conveniently leave page 36 open and dotted around the house for a subtle hint? You could also take advantage of some of our advertisers who are offering great discount vouchers for their restaurants on page 32, 35, and 37. If you are buying a nice pressie for your mum, we have a range of ideas on page 42 which may help! We hope you enjoy the magazine this month, see you in April.
Gemma
I’m absolutely obsessed with the chevron print but was a bit disappointed that stores in the UK didn’t seem to be picking up on the chevron trend quite so much as in other countries. Well hats off to Next Home. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw their chevron rug recently and I just had to pick one up. It’s available in a few different sizes, but I went for the hall runner (pictured above in my hallway), at only £40 I thought it was a bit of a bargain and jazzes up our plain hallway rather nicely.

Symonds Road The County Council after several complaints have erected bollards to prevent people from parking on the grass verge at the bottom of Symonds Road next to Shakers Lane. Sadly this has not stopped parents picking up their children coming from St James school. The verge is a mess, all churned up due to the cars being driven over it. This is a request from both myself and the county council. Please do not drive onto the verge and give the grass a chance to recover, take a little pride in the area.

WOODED AREA
You may have noticed a lot of work going on in the woods over the past two months. There has been a lot of clearing up and removal of unwanted shrubs. When landscaping is done by the developers, there is sometimes an over kill and these need controlling. The good part of this is that we now have some lovely wooded walks in and around the estate, safe and free of car fumes. I would also like to recognise the fantastic work carried out by Woodland Ways, a group of volunteers who do a wonderful job of keeping the areas clean and tidy. Anyone wishing to join the group just look at their page in the directory and contact them.

PARKING Every where I go and everyone I speak to has the same old complaint PARKING. Parking outside schools, double parking on roads so traffic can’t get past and the worst parking on the paths, forcing parents with buggies into the road, please park with consideration for others. To ease parking in and around the shopping area, the Council tidied up the old community area off Heldhaw Road. There are 32 spaces there to be used as an overflow area, however when ever I go up there I see only one or two cars parked up, while on the other side cars are parked all over the place. Why not use the car park? It’s only a few steps more and the walk will do you good. I am speaking to the Council and trying to get some all day passes for some of the teachers from the school. Talking about schools we will have to put up with extra traffic and builders vehicles while the extra classes are being built at Sebert Wood and indeed Abbots Green.
MULTI USE PLAY AREA I have had a long conversation with the Officer at the Borough Council regarding this play area, as to when it would be complete. The latest is that Taylor Wimpey are coming to the end of their maintenance period for the main area of the park and other areas of open space between Mount Road, Lady Miriam Way and Skyliner with the ownership and maintenance responsibilities transferring to St Edmundsbury Borough Council during the spring. In order to get on with the creation of the play area, tender documents will be sent out later this month with work commencing in early June and completion by late July. This is very good news and I for one look forward to its completion as there is a need for something up in that area. The multi use games area which is already in use has proved very popular, its basketball and tennis areas are very good.
EMBER INN There are two new faces at the helm of our local pub, Mrs Liz Lagan is our new Landlady together with Mr Conrad Lagan both are looking forward to serving the community and already settling in, so pop along and introduce your selves and have a glass or two. Welcome Liz and Conrad. We would like to wish our last landlords Georgina and Bill the very best in their new venture and thank them for their excellent work.
Once again thank you for your comments, until next time, Frank Warby MARCH 2015 | 09

ABBOTS GREEN Community Primary School This month the children in Lavender Class (Year 2) have conducted an amazing Ice Investigation! Linking in with our current whole school project – entitled “Fly Me to The Moon” the children investigated which would be the best material to keep an astronaut cool in space while they carrying out their space walks. For this experiment the children wrapped ice cubes in a variety of materials including cling film, foil, rubber and bubble wrap. They then set their timers and waited. Ashton was so excited and said “I couldn’t wait to un-wrap my ice cube to see if it had melted.” The children were allowed to take a peek after 30 minutes to see how their ice cubes were getting on and then they concluded their experiment after an hour. Isabel said “We had great fun finding out which was the best material!”

and Abigail concluded “We found out that cling film was the best material out of them all.” We were also very pleased to welcome into school the parents of children in our Nursery and Reception Classes to work alongside their children on some fun space activities. As well as creating flying saucers and aliens from junk-modelling resources and writing about their creations they also held “Alien Tea Parties” for their parents. The menus were written by the children, and space hats were made and worn as the children served their culinary delights including moon rock cakes; star and planet sandwiches and Pluto pizza.

Dear reader,
Stroke patients benefitting from good performance New figures show that stroke patients at West Suffolk Hospital are receiving fast access to specialist treatment and assessment, in turn giving them a better chance of making a good recovery. The most recent SSNAP (Sentinel Stroke National Audit Programme) data places the hospital among the country’s best performing across a variety of criteria designed to measure the quality of care which patients receive. The audit looks at a range of factors, including how quickly patients can access a brain scan, whether they are rapidly transferred to a dedicated stroke unit and how many patients are given clot-busting thrombolysis treatment. It also measures the help put in place to aid recovery and rehabilitation, such as access to speech and language therapy, physiotherapy and occupational therapy. Overall, West Suffolk scored a SSNAP level B, placing it as one of the top 11% nationally. Dr Sajid Alam, consultant in stroke, geriatric and general medicine at the hospital, said: “We are extremely proud of the care we provide for stroke patients at West Suffolk Hospital. “This most recent data shows that we are continuing to do better than many other hospitals of our size, and are performing as well as some of the larger London units. This is fantastic news for our patients, as it means they are receiving fast access to the right specialist care which will enable them to make the best possible recovery. Patient Evie Borowski, from Bury St Edmunds, with Dr Alam
•
The stroke team
“We have seen fantastic improvements in our stroke unit over the past few years, which includes appointing a third consultant and extending the services we provide to seven days a week. “We are now able to admit patients straight to the ward so that they can receive specialist assessment immediately, and are ensuring they can access brain scans as quickly as possible. This is particularly important with stroke, where acting fast is crucial and can significantly reduce the damage caused to the brain. “We are continuing to look for ways to further improve so that we can build on the excellent performance to date for the benefit of our patients.” The SSNAP data Staff nurse Joana Domingos with stroke consultant Dr Sajid Alam is the most recent which is currently available, and relates to the care provided between July and September 2014. It comes shortly after the hospital’s emergency stroke outreach team (ESOT) was presented with the top prize in the stroke care category of the Patient Safety and Care Awards in July.
If you have any questions about fundraising, any of the events mentioned above or how you can help the hospital, please contact fundraising@wsh.nhs.uk or call 01284 712952 12 | MARCH 2015

a will for wildlife BY WOODLANDS WAY
E
leanor Glanville was an early wildlife enthusiast, and in the 1690’s she discovered a previously unknown butterfly, subsequently named the Glanville Fritillary. Her husband, Richard Ashfield, had estates in Suffolk, but it is unclear if Eleanor ever came to Bury St Edmunds. Unfortunately, when she died, her will (leaving her money to a trust) was contested by her sons on the basis that anyone liking butterflies so much must be insane. Going on the Downs dressed in clothes suitable for insect catching rather than a gentlewoman’s standard dress was also evidence of insanity, and her will was overturned.
These days, showing an interest in nature is seen as sanity, rather than the opposite, and it is normal for people to leave money to nature organisations in their will. Moreton Hall is known for its good health and longevity of its residents, but inevitably everyone will die eventually. Would you like to leave Woodland Ways some money in your will? Even a small legacy can make a big difference to our community woodlands, benefiting wildlife and the community which appreciate the woodlands. When you make your first will, or review your current one, please remember Woodland Ways and support its volunteers to help make your community a better place.
Join us at Woodland Ways... Why not join in with a Woodland Ways work party to help improve the Moreton Hall woods? No experience is needed and all are welcome; we’ll show you what to do. For more information please see www.woodlandways.org.uk, see the Woodland Ways noticeboard in the Community Centre, contact Nick Sibbett on 01284 723847 or email information@woodlandways.org.uk.

Stop the Clock
on running injury time bombs
B
By The Abbeyfields Clinic
listers, chaffing, uninviting training schedules, cold mornings, expensive shoes (several pairs), sponsorship commitments, lycra. Some of the things that come with running are unpleasant but necessary, even essential. Injuries in non contact sport should, theoretically be completely avoidable and the quest to find the risk factors, strength and conditioning routines and training paragons are very much the Holy Grail in Physiotherapy. Do tight hamstrings matter? Does stretching make a difference, and if so when should I do it, before or after training; and which stretch? Static, ballistic, dynamic, cosmic (I made that one up), how many rest days? Do I train with injury and push on or back off? One thing that physiotherapist do know is that asymmetry is a common finding in people picking up non-contact injuries. So a thorough screening for your muscle length, strength and timing is important before embarking on a training routine. Also it is important that the movements that you will be making for your sport are analysed to see if your muscle pattern is efficient and fits within the realms of what your body can do and what your asking it to do. I believe a gap in what you are trying to do, and what your body can cope with flirts with injury. The bigger the gap – the more chance of injury. The human body is a marvellous machine for adapting and compensating but the compensations only work for so long. There is a range of what would be considered normal for a lot of techniques but when you factor in your unique physical and training characteristics that range narrows significantly. For example running around Thetford Forest in the wet with weak adductors = groin strain time bomb. Hitting the tarmac with weak ankle dorsiflexors = shin splint exploding nightmare. Track racing with inside leg abductor weakness = gluteal and ITB KABOOMB!! You get the picture. If you think you can feel the ticking of your count down to injury? Get assessed, clued up and stop the clock. Email Tom@theabbeyfieldsclinic.co.uk for more information

Welcome to the 19th hole, a place for golf tips, reviews and everything golf related.
Welcome to the 19th hole, this month I am doing a first and reviewing the golf resort of Celtic Manor. This resort hosted the 2010 Ryder cup matches, the course used for these matches was the Twenty ten course and this would be one of the courses that I would be playing over my two day visit. The other was the Roman road course, this course was formally used to host the Welsh open on the European tour, both courses will be a great test and it will be great to hit shots on a course we have all seen on TV. SUNDAY - Arrival day. 10:30am our tee time on the Roman road, the course had taken a lot of water over the days before our arrival so it was a little wet under foot. This course was a great test of golf, it suited all standards of golfer with a selection of teeing options and even with the heavy conditions the course played well for the time of year. The biggest test were the greens, with their relatively small sizes and very undulating design this made a good score a real challenge. CHECK IN After the golf had been played and talked about over a post round drink it was down to the resorts 5 star hotel to check in. To assist with your travel at this point the resort run a shuttle bus service, this allowed our party to travel together and not have to worry about car parking. On arrival the hotel lived up to its rating, the rooms were spacious and were in keeping with the rest of the hotels luxury feel. The bars and restaurants within the hotel offered a great location for rest and relaxation after a hard day on the course and our party
enjoyed a great evening reliving glory’s and disasters from the days golf. MONDAY – Twenty Ten, the Ryder Cup course. On arrival to the twenty ten course we were shown around the Ryder cup highlights and told that our golf bags would be waiting for us by the first tee. 11:00am our tee time for the twenty ten was here, with cameras at the ready we all struck the opening shots we have all seen our heroes hit. Again the course was heavy underfoot but this did not take anything away from the day. The course is a fantastic layout and in amazing condition considering the weather that had passed through the area in the build-up. Every shot hit made your think and you can really begin to appreciate just how good the world’s top players are playing these courses all the time. The course was a test from tee to green but good shots were rewarded, however bad shots were made to pay. Celtic manor’s attention to detail both on and off the course was there for all to see, from the helpful staff to the smaller choices. I would sum it up by saying that a trip to Celtic manor isn’t just an overnight stay and two green fees it’s a golfing experience and one I would highly recommend. I hope this has made you think about getting around the country and playing some of our great British courses, and don’t forget if your game needs shaping up before you head off For more coaching advice please visit my Facebook site or to book a lesson please feel free to contact me. Dementia campaign receives £20,000 legacy donation A campaign to further enhance the support and care offered to patients with dementia at West Suffolk Hospital has been left a generous legacy of £20,000. The donation was gifted to the Forget-MeNot Dementia Campaign, run by West Suffolk Hospital Charity in partnership with the Mercury newspapers and East Anglian Daily Times. The person’s family, who do not want to be named, chose the Forget-Me-Not appeal after deciding they wanted to support a local charity. They said: “We have read how well-supported the Forget-Me-Not Dementia Campaign has been in the last 12 months - it is something that will make a real difference to local families.

“Dementia can have a profound effect on a person and also the whole family. We know this money will be used to further improve the care of patients with dementia at our local hospital.” Julie Fountain, dementia lead at West Suffolk Hospital, said the money would be spent on making a ward more dementia-friendly.

She explained: “Last year, we made ward G4 more dementia-friendly by decorating in contrasting colours to help people differentiate between distinct areas and bays. “That has made such a big difference that we are now keen to carry out similar improvements elsewhere. “Coming into hospital can be a daunting experience, especially for those with dementia. “At West Suffolk Hospital, we are doing all we can to try and make the environment more familiar and less clinical. This generous donation – and every penny raised from the appeal - will help us achieve that aim.” The Forget-Me-Not Dementia Campaign was launched last March and has now raised more than £51,000 in the first 12 months.

Created without oxygen to make application soft and smooth, the tanner also eliminates the usual fake tan smell. Best of all, this quick-drying mousse has a slight tint so you can see what your applying as you go. It’s a bargain at under a tenner. 60 Minutes, £24.95, Fake Bake Apply Fake Bake’s light lotion generously and leave on for up to three hours until you get your desired tan. Then, simply pop in the shower, rinse, and hello bronzed goddess! The lotion itself is easy to apply and absorbs quickly so you don’t have to avoid clean bed sheets or white surfaces. It’s slighter more expensive then your average tanner but does come with a tanning mitt and gloves, making it worth the price tag. Self tan dark bronzing lotion, £28.05 With a serious lack of sunshine in the UK, we’ve been looking less like we’ve just stepped off a yacht in the south of France and more like we’ve just returned from a rainy weekend in Bognor, so using a ‘dark’ bronzing lotion could be dodgy territory. Luckily, St Tropez Dark Bronzing Lotion was really easy to apply (they recommend latex gloves, but we used our fail safe tanning mitt) and whilst it says it’s dark, it does tailor to your skin tone so it looked completely natural once it had developed. And the best bit is that it’s not sticky, so could be applied a few hours before going out and pop makeup over the top.

Asthma is an episodic constriction of the bronchial tubes. It is a common disorder of both children and adults, often regarded as mysterious and frustrating to treat. What are the symptoms of asthma?

What are the causes of asthma? The immediate cause of an asthmatic attack is tightening of the muscular bands that regulate the size of the bronchial tubes. These muscles are controlled by nerves, but what triggers the nerves to make airways constrict inappropriately is not clear. The triggers for asthma can be primarily allergic or emotional or induced by exercise or respiratory infection, or it can occur with no obvious causes. It is also now being considered an inflammatory disordermore research on this will follow. The “hygiene hypothesis” is a proposed explanation for why allergies and asthma are now epidemic, especially in developed countries. The hypothesis holds that children who grow up in crowded and dirtier environments are less likely to develop these ailments than youngsters raised in cleaner, more protected environments. The idea is that the developing immune systems of less privileged kids are exposed to lots of germs from an early age and so become stronger and more protective of health. The hypothesis recently got a big boost in credibility. Researchers at Duke University Medical Center compared the antibodies in the blood of laboratory rats and mice, which grow in a virtually germ-free environment, with those of wild rats and mice. All of the wild rodents had higher levels of IgG and IgE, classes of antibodies associated with immune and allergic diseases, but the wild rodents’ antibodies did not tend to bind to the rat’s own cells, as did the antibodies produced by the hygienically raised rodents. Instead, the wild rodents’ antibodies efficiently and effectively attacked invading organisms. The research was written up in the August, 2006, Scandinavian Journal of Immunology.

The remedies and advice suggested in this article are the personal opinion of the author. Please also inform your GP if you are planning to take any natural remedies and you are already on long term prescribed drugs. Always consult a qualified Complementary Practitioner, never self medicate. increase sympathetic tone and anxiety. Theophylline, derived from tea, has a long history of use, but may not be as safe as doctors used to think. It can cause dramatic personality changes. Other drugs of this class can be inhaled to relieve and prevent attacks. These inhalers work, but they are often addictive, since the bronchial tubes are likely to become constricted again when one dose wears off (the same pattern occurs when these drugs are sprayed into the nose to relieve nasal congestion). Other inhalers contain steroids. If the steroids are not absorbed into the system, they can be safe and effective. Oral steroids (prednisone is the commonest) are very dangerous for asthmatics, because it is too easy to become addicted to them, and toxicity from long-term steroid use is devastating. Try to avoid ever going on oral steroids. If you do have to take them, get off as soon as possible. In general, the less medication you can take, the better. Allopathic drugs, being suppressive in nature, tend to perpetuate asthma and may reduce the chance that it will disappear on its own What therapies can we consider for asthma? • Eliminate milk and milk products, substituting other calcium sources. • Eat organically grown fruits and vegetables as much as possible. • Eliminate polyunsaturated vegetable oils, margarine, vegetable shortening, all partially hydrogenated oils that might contain trans-fatty acids, all foods that might contain trans-fatty acids (such as deep-fried foods). • Use extra-virgin olive oil as your main fat. • Increase intake of omega-3 fatty acids. • Always drink plenty of water to keep your respiratory tract secretions more fluid. • Experiment with eliminating (one at a time) wheat, corn, soya and sugar for six to eight weeks to see if the condition improves. • Eat ginger and turmeric regularly for their antiinflammatory effects. • Have some manipulative work done on the chest to break up restrictive patterns in nerves and muscles that develop in chronic asthma. The best systems are osteopathic manipulation, especially from a practitioner of cranial therapy, and deeptissue massage. • Minimize contact with respiratory irritants, such as
smoke, dust, moulds, and volatile chemicals. Remove sources of offending materials from your home, install a good air filtration system, or consider moving if the air is generally bad where you live. • Visit a practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic medicine (the traditional healing system of India). These systems are sometimes able to offer significant help through more specific dietary adjustments and herbal treatments. Yoga Yoga is an all-around stress-relieving technique with gentle stretches and a slower pace than other workouts. Even better, recent research revealed specific benefits from yoga for asthma relief. In an eight-week study of 57 adults with asthma, those in the yoga group showed a significant improvement in lung function and a reduction in asthma symptoms when compared with a control group. Many of the back bend poses of yoga work to open out the chest and lung area and improve poor and stooping posture which can exacerbate conditions like Asthma. The deep breathing exercises of yoga also improve lung function and reduce stress and anxiety, often linked with Asthma as Asthmatics tend to breathe very shallowly and quickly. The average person is said to only use 1/3rd of their lung capacity – just imagine the benefits if you could learn to use 100%! If you want to learn more then why not book your place on

JOE
MY NAME IS JOE SADLER AND I HAVE BEEN A QUALIFIED PERSONAL TRAINER FOR 5 YEARS, WORKING FROM THE MORETON HALL HEALTH CLUB.
I thought it would nice for the Bury St Edmunds directory readers to have a little look into my training for this event. From January 1st to current date 20th February I have ran 200+ miles, this has been made up with sprints, tempo sessions, hill efforts, long runs and steady runs. A usual week for me includes the following: Monday - I have usually ran a long run on the Sunday so I’ll do plenty of stretching and foam rolling. I also play racket ball with 2 clients on this day so a nice way to get my legs moving again without running. Tuesday - This will usually be a steady run between 5-6 miles at a average pace of 7:00 - 7:15min/mile. Wednesday - Sprints or intervals. I like to work on my speed mid week. For example on Wednesday 18th I ran 1 mile at marathon race pace (around 7:15min/miles) and then 1 mile at 5 km pace (around 6:00min/ mile). Repeat this sequence 3 - 4 times. Thursday - Another steady run 6 - 7 miles, but slightly faster than Tuesday’s pace so will aim for just under 7:00min/mile pace. Friday - Strength day. I focus on strength on a Friday, gives me a break from running and allows
the body enough recovery time for a long run on a Sunday. I am currently working on 5 x 5 training programme which is 5 set’s 5 reps 1 min rest between each set. Exercises include Squats, Dead-lifts and Lunges Saturday - Rest Sunday - Long run or race. This Sunday ( 22nd February ) I will be racing in the Tarpley 20 which starts in Beyton. I will be looking to run the race in under 7:00min/mile pace. If i’m not racing I will go out and run anything from 13miles upwards working on aerobic fitness and time on my feet. If you would like to stay updated on my training “like” my facebook page https://www.facebook.com/ JoeSadlerpt If you would like to sponsor Fran and I please go to our Virgin Just Giving Page which is http:// uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/ franjoe Finally we are also running a raffle during our fundraising and are always looking for raffle prizes, so if you, or your business can donate a prize feel free to get in touch!

HEALTH & BEAUTY
Beating Breast Cancer I would like to start by saying a huge Thank You to everyone that has given positive comments and feedback about the article. I am pleasantly surprised and humbled by all the kind words of support and encouragement given to me on this journey and they are all very much valued and appreciated. As mentioned in my first journal I was about to embark on my third session of chemotherapy at the end of January and had felt pretty well after the second. The third treatment was the final one of the Docetaxel drug and the first week was pretty much a repeat of the last treatment. I was woozy and off balance again and my Oncologist advised to drink more water to help – something I am conscious of in terms of keeping hydrated as much as possible. I have been incorporating Linseed Tea into my regime on a daily basis as this is very hydrating and great for the kidneys, reduces fear and stress and is calming and soothing – as my Nutritionalist says, A Hug in a Mug! One of the many helpful tips I have picked up on the Eat Drink Move Think 12 week nutrition course I attended at Neal’s Yard last year. Many of the recipes have now been incorporated into my eating habits – one in particular, Homemade Granola (better than any of the products you can buy!) as well as Green Smoothies and my recently made smoothie – Ginger and Lucuma which is creamy and delicious and incorporates turmeric so helping on the Cancer front too! Have also been adding beetroot to my diet over the last few weeks as this is a powerful antioxidant and is shown to posses anti cancer properties. Have tried my hand at some of the recipes from the new Deliciously Ella book that I purchased also. I should possibly wait till my taste buds have returned to normal however, as making the Chilli and Beetroot Brownies I did put way too much chilli in even for me, let alone someone with normal taste buds! An excuse for me to eat it all though….! I have received lots 28 | MARCH 2015
of comments about how well I am looking, probably a mix of the steroids, which are making me eat all the time and all the lovely recipes, I have been making! I seem to be constantly eating which is probably helping and preventing much of the nausea! After day one of the treatment I managed to attend my Yoga class and have been to a couple of Pilates classes. I am however feeling a lack of strength, particularly in my legs at the moment – feels like I am trying to walk through thick mud every time I take a step! Have taken to walking a few times a week around Moreton Hall just to get some exercise, as I am unfortunately not a gym person! Am also attempting to learn some Qi Qong, which is a gentle form of exercise composed of movements that increase circulation to the blood supply and lymphatic system. Another side effect of chemotherapy is the ‘brain fog’ and I have noticed that my memory is lapsing (more so than normal!). Trying to string a sentence together when talking to someone without getting all the words mixed up is becoming increasingly embarrassing too. Who knows what I am going to come out with when I am having a conversation! When it comes to my hand writing and spelling, even the simplest of words are being spelt incorrectly as my brain seems to be 2 steps ahead of me before I can finish a word! Am trying to combat all the memory loss by using my phone for reminders and notes, writing on my wall calendar, I have a journal
Linda
and a diary too – overkill?! Yet when I go shopping I still forget things that are written on my list! Am still experiencing nerve issues with my fingertips and toes, but am confident this will go in the near future as I commence the FEC drug. I can also see changes in my nails as they are growing – my half moons are no longer half moons and they appear to be a slightly different colour with some ridging. For the first time since my diagnosis in October last year I recently decided to pick up some of the brochures that the Macmillan Unit have available to patients. There is an immense amount of good information to utilise for every aspect of going through all treatment of Cancer and I would urge anyone going through this to find out what Macmillan offer. I have booked myself onto a HOPE (Help Overcome Problems Effectively) course that is being run for 6 weeks and I attended the first one on 18th February. The course (which is free) is aimed at promoting self-management and looks at ways in which to take more control, manage stress and emotional issues, goal setting and problem solving. I am confident I will learn and gain some valuable help from this as well as meeting other people that have been through or are going through treatment of Cancer. I will keep you up to date with my progress in the next issue. I also found out that the girls on the No7 counter in Boots are trained to help us women in terms of giving face to face advice about caring for your skin, nails and hair. I may pop along in the near future to see what they say (although I use ‘natural’ products myself); I believe you can ask for advice without having to purchase their products!
HEALTH & BEAUTY
I have managed a couple of nights out this month. Went to the Fat Cat Comedy club earlier in February, which I usually try and get to each month but have missed on the last few occasions. I also had a lovely day out with several of my girlfriends where we had lunch and then went to see the much talked about 50 Shades of Grey film at the Abbeygate Picturehouse. We took up the majority of the back row and suffice to say with a group of women, there was more chatting, giggling, drinking wine and eating popcorn that went on than watching the film (don’t worry I only had a couple of glasses of wine as I am on the Chemo!). I had my fourth session on 16th February and this one plus the next two are the start of the FEC drug regime, which is a combination of 3 types of drug. One of these is a Red drug, and you guessed it.... turns your wee red! I managed to drink lots of water and flush it all out that evening! The Hospital didn’t tell me that I needed to have an ECG before they could treat me. This was necessary as one of the drugs could affect your heart – thankfully my heart rate and rhythm were ok. Apparently nausea and sickness are more common with FEC so I have more drugs to take for anti sickness. On a good note, my steroids have been reduced and I only have to take these in the morning so I am hoping I will get some more sleep for once! Considering how well, generally, I have been since my third session, I am confident (she says fingers crossed), that this will continue. I am currently experiencing some nausea each morning so far, but am taking my little homeopathic pills to help as well as eating lots! To keep you up to date with my 5 month old kitten Tillie, she decided to come into season the night before my Chemotherapy...poor little girl! A phone call to the Vets and she was booked in for her Operation. Am glad to say that the evening I picked her up she was full of beans and seems to be recovering well. My job now is to try and prevent her from picking out her stitches otherwise she will have to wear one of those collars! To finish off, I still believe that I need to have a better understanding of the disease, the strengths and weaknesses of what orthodox medicine offers and then employ a raft of complementary and alternative therapies to my lifestyle during and after all the treatment and surgery. The statistics seem to be based on the ‘average’ person – I don’t want to be average! I need to take control of my life and rebalance my body, mind and spirit. I have a long way to go and I am sure I will still go through all the emotional side of shock, grief, anger, despair, denial etc. I may not feel ill, but I do have a serious illness. I need to learn from it, whatever it has to show me – it’s a journey and an experience.

HEALTH & BEAUTY
You’re a Mum! P It’s mother’s day this month, so all you mums out there, if you need a quick pick-me-up, here are a few ideas to treat yourself this month or any month you feel like it! All mums deserve a treat once in a while and you certainly don’t need to spend the earth to get some me time.
Get a Pedicure
Pedicures generally run around £15-£25. Nothing feels better than a little foot massage and some pretty paint on your piggies. If you don’t have the time or money to get a professional pedicure, then do it yourself. You will be glad you did!
Order a Take-away for Dinner
Sometimes an exhausting day can keep you from even having enough energy to throw a frozen dinner in the oven or heat up leftovers. For those days, why not order a take-away? You have worked hard all day, now just relax and enjoy your evening!
Chill during Nap Time
Nap time is usually mum’s favourite time of day, since she can get things accomplished. But for today, how about using nap time to get some relaxation in! Take a nap yourself, paint your nails, read a magazine, or catch up on your soaps. Do whatever you want to do in order to relax!
Buy some new underwear
As a mum, it’s still important to feel sexy too. It’s likely that you haven’t gone shopping for new underwear in a while, so take an afternoon and hit the shops! Pick out some new things to make you feel sexy and pretty. You deserve it!
Indulge in some chocolate
Most of the time, mums work hard to get their pre-baby figure back, and that’s a good thing. But sometimes, you just need to indulge! Go ahead and have that cream cake or that piece of chocolate. Every now and then won’t hurt.
Make an effort
It’s so easy to fall into the rut of wearing leggings, tees, a ponytail, and no makeup. For most days, that’s fine since you need to be comfy anyway. But every now and then, it’s nice to make an effort. Put on some actual clothes and wear a little makeup. You will be surprised at how it makes you feel, and this is an easy way to pamper yourself in 10 minutes or less.
30 | MARCH 2015
HEALTH & BEAUTY
Pamper yourself! Arrange for a sitter
You don’t always need to pay a sitter for a date night or a day out shopping. Arrange a swap with a trusted friend and swap a night/day with her. Offer to watch their children one night or day in exchange for babysitting for you.
Hire a cleaner
This may be a bit costly, but if you can afford it, it’s worth it. Keeping up with daily chores can be taxing enough without adding deep cleaning to the mix. When you find yourself stretched to the limit, hire someone to clean your house that week. That’s one less stress off your mind, and you have extra time to sit down and do whatever you want since your house is all clean!
Take a bubble bath
When the kids are tucked in bed, and you are worn out. Slip on a furry bathrobe and get your supplies together! A nice glass of wine, plenty of silky bubbles, warm bath water, and a magazine or book to read.
Need we say more?

Salmon fish cakes
Ingredients:
Method:
400g/14oz skinless salmon fillet, chopped 300g/10½oz cooked broccoli florets, drained well 2 spring onions, finely chopped small bunch fresh dill, roughly chopped 2 lemons, zest only 100g/3½oz dry white breadcrumbs sea salt and freshly ground black pepper ½ small bunch fresh parsley, leaves only, finely chopped 50g/1¾oz plain flour 2 free-range eggs, beaten olive oil cooking spray lemon wedges, to serve
Put the salmon into a food processor along with the cooked broccoli florets and pulse to a finely chopped consistency. Tip into a bowl and add the spring onions, dill and the zest of one lemon. Season with salt and pepper and mix thoroughly. Divide the mixture into eight equal-sized balls and shape into fish cakes using your hands. Place on a tray lined with parchment or greaseproof paper and cover with cling film. Leave in the fridge to chill for 20-30 minutes to firm up. Preheat the oven to 220C/425F/Gas 7. Combine the remaining lemon zest with the breadcrumbs, a pinch of salt and pepper and the parsley and pour into a shallow dish. Prepare a plate of the flour and a shallow dish with the eggs. Coat the fish cakes in flour, shake off any excess and then dip in the beaten eggs. Roll each fishcake in the breadcrumbs until coated on all sides then transfer to a baking tray. Drizzle or spray the fishcakes with a little oil and then bake for 15 minutes, or until golden-brown. While the fish cakes are in the oven, prepare the peas. Bring the stock to the boil in a small pan. Put the peas into a food processor with the mint leaves, a pinch of salt and pepper and the white wine vinegar and blend roughly. Gradually add the stock until you have a loose, rough purée. Return the purée to the pan and warm through gently. Season to taste. Serve the fish cakes with the peas and lemon wedges.

The Handmade Wardrobe
In recent years, people have become more interested in the origins of their products. Just as fair trade food products are increasingly popular, and people have come to appreciate local produce and carefully sourced ingredients, we are taking an interest in the origins of our other consumer goods. Massproduction has brought about an era of cheap, disposable, but poorly made fast fashion – and now we are seeking something better. Personal fit, freer choice - beautiful things made to last.
The popularity of the Great British Sewing Bee shows a country itching to create. People are pulling out their sewing machines and knitting needles, and making. We find community spirit recovering lost skills, and sharing them with others. When we learn to sew our own clothing, and repair and refashion the things we have, we gain a range of personal expression beyond choosing off the rail. We can make ethical choices about where our clothing comes from. And if we can imagine it, we can create it. - Zoe Clark, Thread Hub

Parents Play Project gains councillor support A group of parents who decided to fund-raise for a new village playground, have celebrated its opening three months ahead of schedule. In May 2013 a group of parents in Barrow, started working towards raising the £50,000 for the new playground behind the village hall. The old play area built 12 years earlier was no longer suitable for the growing number of children living in the expanding village. Now, thanks in part to a locality budget grant of £1,500 from St Edmundsbury Borough Cllr Ian Houlder, and £10,000 from the borough council’s Rural Initiative Grant Scheme, the new play area has opened three months ahead of schedule. Lisa Gleave, chairperson of the Barrow Community Play Project, a subcommittee of the Barrow Village Hall Management Committee, led the project. She said: “It has been open for a month and the feedback we are getting from parents and the children themselves is amazing. It is very rewarding to see the play area so busy even at this time of the year. “The local community has considered for some time that the existing play equipment required updating and no longer served its purpose. Action Play & Leisure in Norfolk designed and installed the play area and they have created a wonderful community space for us. “We are very grateful to all our funders. We would also like to thank Barrow cum Denham Parish Council and the Village Hall Management Committee for their support throughout this project”. Cllr Houlder, who represents the Barrow ward on the borough council said: “The playground is already proving very popular. The group of parents have steered this project from the outset and in just over 18 months they have secured the funds and had the new play area built. It is very impressive. I am delighted that as local ward councillor I was able to contribute towards this through my local grant. This pot of money was set up to help families and communities to help themselves, as they have done here in Barrow”. Other financial contributors include: Barrow cum Denham Parish Council; Havebury Housing Partnership; Asda Foundation; The Suffolk Foundation; The Suffolk Empowering Communities Fund (SCC); Suffolk County Councillor Terry Clements and The Ganzoni Charitable Trust. Mortimer & Gausden Estate Agents donated £100 for every property they sold in Barrow during 2014, while Glasswells, Waitrose Community Matters, F A Valiant & Sons and Extensia Properties Ltd also made contributions towards the project.

Bury St Edmunds Youth Forum
A voice for young people from our to
Last year, a group of young people, councillors, council staff and others gathered to discuss plans for a new youth forum in Bury St Edmunds. The first meeting was on Wednesday 3rd September and now, six meetings later, the future of the Bury St Edmunds Youth Forum looks promising.
BSEYF was established so that
young people can have a voice in their community. At each meeting we talk about an issue that has been raised by a member of the forum and work to create positive local change. We also invite guest speakers in to inspire them to make this change happen. Previous guests include Lord Norman Tebbit and representatives from local rehabilitation facility, Focus12. Recently
we’ve had the pleasure of announcing that the guest speaker for our AGM in September will be the Leader of the Green Party of England and Wales, Natalie Bennett. And that’s not the only exciting thing happening soon. A hustings, debates on education and the EU, guest speeches about loan sharks, the police and plenty of debates about what’s happening in

You Can Have Both
If your bathroom is so small that you can’t easily include a shower in addition to a bath then an over-bath shower is the solution. There are many stylish and affordable options for overbath showers today and you can also purchase splash guards to attach to the side of the bath which will help to minimise flooding. Fitting a splash guard in addition to a stylish shower curtain is a great way to make sure that you have the facilities to enjoy a relaxing bath as well as an invigorating shower!
Turn it Into a Wet Room
Installing a wet room is one way to save on space in a stylish way, you don’t necessarily need an enormous bathroom to be able to enjoy the benefits of a wet room either. Even smaller bathrooms can be adjusted by installing concealed shower trays which give the appearance of a wet room. Integral tiled seating
and storage spaces are another great way to make the most of this type of set-up.
Make the Most of the Space Available
If you want to keep a traditional bathroom with shower and bath as separate units, then you will need to consider some other nifty space saving ideas in terms of the bath and sink. A corner bath is an attractive way to allow you to benefit from a good soak without using up all of the available space, whilst undersink storage cupboards and over door shelves will make the most of otherwise unused space and allow for storage of bulky towels too. Adding a shelf underneath the basin will also give you some added storage space. Avoid cluttering up your bath area with cosmetics, bottles and jars, which not only looks disorganised, but is a magnet for mess.
Quick Fix Small Bathroom Solutions
If your bathroom needs to cater for a whole family then try these quick-fix solutions for a fast and effective de-clutter. There’s no need to keep a laundry basket in the bathroom. Have a clean out of all those unused lotions and potions! It’s amazing how much space is taken up with things that are never used! Invest in an over door towel rail, great for hanging damp towels on. A small bathroom need not be an impractical bathroom, keep your clutter down and look at any unused space available as potential storage space. If you fancy a bathroom revamp and want to know how to give the room the appearance of being larger in addition to adding a little luxury then consider painting it all in a light colour and adding a large mirror which will double the available light.

Affording That Dream Home Salary rich but deposit poor?
The new Stamp Duty Land Tax regime introduced by the Chancellor are just one of many reasons why now is the perfect time to enter the property market and start climbing that all important property ladder. An impressive 98% of people are now better off under the new system, while mortgages are becoming more obtainable and legal costs are both competitive and affordable.
So what is holding people back? The deposit is the sticking point.
Housing charity Shelter recently stated that on average, it would take the first time buyer 10 years to save a large enough deposit to turn the dream of owning a house into reality. The average price of a detached house in Bury St. Edmunds is now ÂŁ303,000, so to find a 20% deposit means having to save an eye watering ÂŁ60,600. In the meantime the cost of renting is currently rising at twice the annual rate of earnings and it is predicted that the average price of rent per month will soon exceed the cost of the average mortgage. Although the Government offers a number of incentives for both first time buyers and existing home owners, interests rates are much better for those who can put down a larger deposit. We are however in a time where even those who are salary rich can often be deposit poor. With escalating rents and the cost of living
rising rapidly making it almost impossible to save for a twenty percent deposit, an increasing number of people are turning to gifted deposits from parents and extended family members to get one foot on the property ladder. Despite mortgage Lenders having a number of special conditions to be satisfied, they still will lend with a gifted deposit provided that the giver signs a Deed of Gift. Although it sounds frightening to lose control of a large sum of money, there are a number of safeguards that can be put in place to protect the money being used to assist a relative in purchasing a new property. Should you require any advice on the different methods of protecting a deposit, owning a property jointly, creating a legal charge against a property or entering into a Declaration of Trust to determine in advance who is entitled to an interest in a property please contact Luke Stockings at Rudlings Wakelam on 01284 715671 or via Luke.Stockings@Rudlings-Wakelam.co.uk

tune in - turn off BY ANDREW SOUTHWOOD
I
might get rid of our television. Okay, so that won’t actually happen, but its use is decreasing at rate inversely proportional to the number of new channels that appear. This decline is clearly influenced by many factors, including hectic family life, maintaining a reasonable sense of order in house where 2 small kids and a baby are continuously drawing us towards chaos. ‘Free time’ is limited and precious – which makes it even more frustrating that the box has virtually nothing on it that interests me. I don’t think I am alone in my intense dislike of any; soap, ‘celebrity’, reality, or voting based programme? However, remove those genres from the list and you are left with only a few scraps, most of which are re-runs. Even ‘The Big Bang Theory’ loses its appeal on the 12th viewing. I could of course switch over and watch the ‘Transformers’
54 | MARCH 2015
or ‘2012’ movies from start to finish, but quite frankly I haven’t the energy. Besides, I could piece them together in my head as I’ve seen them all in their entirety, just in random 30 minute snippets, over the last 12 months. I enjoy live sport, but realistically I can’t watch it during the daytime, so aside from the odd evening football match, I don’t really see much. Needless to say, I won’t be helping Sky or BT fund their obscene £5bn Premier League contract. I’ll leave that for people with more surplus money and much more spare time. Like most of us, I can record programs with an ease that I could only have dreamt of not more than 10 years ago (remember when ‘VideoPlus+’ was the very latest in recording technology?). The fact remains, aside from the odd classic film, not much finds its way onto the hard disc other than kids programmes.
This brings me onto children’s tv - a subject I should probably avoid, but won’t. From what I can gather, it seems my kids are clearly leading a very sheltered life. At nearly 7 years old, my son honestly has no concept of television, in its true sense. He only sees the list of things we recorded for him, maybe the Octonauts, or maybe some of a BBC Four documentary on Tutankhamun (don’t ask). Essentially, screen time is limited to less than 30 mins a day, every day. They have no idea how to turn on the television. Thinking about it, that is probably one of my proudest achievements as a parent! One day, I’ll lead a more leisurely life and maybe have the energy and inclination to watch a gritty drama series again, but for now I find half an hour slouched on the sofa in silence at the end of the day is probably the best option.

The Most Important Thing to Learn at School
Simon Head
Well I’m going to start with a re-cap: the second and third most important things to learn at school are how to enjoy reading and challenge. But the most important? It’s not the offside-trap, times-tables or Henry VII. It doesn’t even involve Bunsen burners, compasses or conkers - quintessential as those items are. You won’t even find it on the timetable. If you want to look for it, start on the playground or in the lunch queue. Watch what happens when a goal is scored, or surrendered. See who sits next to whom in Assembly, and listen to what gets said on the way to lessons. Friendship is the most important thing to learn at school: the art - and science - of tolerance, trust and sharing. There’s a prayer by Pedro Arrupe we’ve stuck into each of our hymn books which closes: ‘Fall in love, stay in love, and it will decide everything.’ So friendship informs everything we learn at school, and put to use afterwards. It lets us move on from mistakes, as well as encouraging us to make them in the first place. Friendship provides perspective and insight as well as solidarity and escape. Above all, Friendship teaches you about yourself. How can a school teach this? A code of conduct that reaches beyond the paper it is written on is a start, but ultimately we should not worry too much. Unstructured time is all that is needed - and as big a playground as possible. A range of exciting activities can help seed the process, but I can trace the roots of friendships just as much to events which provoke a groan or shudder as ones eliciting smiles and laughter. If your child has friends, likes challenge and loves reading, congratulations - the rest really will take care of itself. Simon Head is Headmaster of Moreton Hall Preparatory School. headmaster@moretonhallprep.org

PAULS PLANT OF THE MONTH
Flowering Quince Quince is a useful addition to the garden for early spring colour when its bright orange / red flowers stud the bare thorny stems for weeks. I have never tried it but once the flowers mature into quinces you can make a delicious jelly Easy to grow in virtually any soil and can also be trained on to a shady wall.

What to do in your garden in March For many of us March is the month when we start to think about our gardens again after the worst of the winter has passed we hope! This year why not think of something new and perhaps have a go at planting a bottle garden, entering a local garden show , visiting a local open garden or try growing some fruit or veg. The ideas are endless trying something different will be fun. Remember the clocks go forward by one hour on Sunday 29 March as British Summer Time begins. “The March wind roars, Like a lion in the sky, And makes us shiver As he passes by , When winds are soft, And the days are warm and clear, Just like a gentle lamb, Then spring is here. AUTHOR UNKNOWN

pauls jobs for the month surprised if this pulls out a lot of debris and leaves the lawn looking bare in some patches.
Flower Garden • March is a good time to prune your roses. Shorten last year’s stems by half cutting just above a bud.
• Mow the grass again but this time at right angles to the first cut.
• Now is the ideal time to lift and divide congested clumps of snowdrops. Tease the plants apart gently and replant where you wish. • You can increase your collection of dahlias by taking cuttings. Dormant tubers need to be brought into growth by placing them in pots or trays of compost. Water well and keep them warm in a light spot. When the shoots emerge and are around 3-4 inches long use a sharp knife to cut just above the point where the shoot emerges from the tuber. Remove the lower leaves from your cutting and pinch out the growing tip. Plant the cuttings in a small pot of potting compost keeping them warm indoors in a light spot. In a few weeks they will root and by the end of May should be able to plant your new dahlias in the garden

Fruit Garden • Final chance this month to prune your apple and pear trees before they start to bloom. Aim to remove any dead branches congested or crossing stems
Repair or lay a lawn If it is not too wet the end of March is a good time to lay turf or sow grass seed. Follow these steps to improve your lawn • Mow the grass at the highest setting on your mower. • Scarify your lawn. Use a wire toothed rake to get rid of any moss and weeds. Don’t be
GARDEN SERVICES
• It is worth spiking your lawn every year especially if you use your lawn a lot. The purpose of spiking a lawn is to make air holes in the turf and so alleviate compaction which leads to poor drainage and growth of moss. Just use a garden fork and every 6 inches stab the fork in around 4 inches. • If your lawn has some bare patches scuff up the soil with a fork and apply some grass seed. Make sure to keep it watered. Alternatively buy a square of turf for a quick fix. • Finally give your lawn a tonic with a spring lawn feed.
Vegetable Garden • Plant potatoes and earth up as required. • Plant onion sets 4” to 6” apart and 12” between rows. • Plant broad beans, parsnips and carrots

hair
I am sure that a lot of girls like their hair and enjoy fiddling with it and trying new ways to put it up. One way to put it up is to do a bun, I use a doughnut to put mine up which you can buy from places like Claire’s or Accessorise like the one in the picture. At the moment I have been doing all sorts of things with my hair and one of them is a halo braid, if you would like to find out how you do it you could go on YouTube and Zoella has a tutorial of how she does it.
SCHOOL
In school I have taken an interest in many sports but one I really enjoy is basketball, we are being taught it at the moment. So far we have learnt how to dribble using our fingertips, not the palm of the hand. May I just say thank you to my fun P.E teacher Miss Brown. Maybe if you haven’t tried it, you should some time!
tips on life
In life everyone has their grumpy days and I find it hard to just move on, so what I recommend doing is to just smile and try and forget about it or to do something you really like. Reading or drawing is a good distraction, try to find a picture either in the book you are reading or just find an object and draw it.
planet laser
I was really excited to get a sneak peak at a new place called ‘Planet Laser’! It is at the back of ASDA and there is so much to do! You can do laser tag and mini bowling – the lights are immense! It has smaller bowling balls and smaller pins so that when you bowl, your fingers do not go in holes, you just hold the ball in your hand. There will be lots of games and crane machines as well as a simulator! There will be a café and even a candy floss machine which I can totally recommend! Having spoken to John (the guy who owns it all) the first part of Planet Laser should be opening in early March, so save up your pocket money! Start following them on Twitter @ planetlaserbury, Planet Laser on Facebook or www.planetlaserbury.co.uk.

Did you know that there is a good chance that your kitchen store cupboard is harbouring some of the most effective natural cleaning products available? You really needn’t spend a small fortune on the latest fluorescent-packaged synthetic chemical products. As well as saving money, the naturally derived ingredients will also be eco-friendly! The Big Four Natural Home Cleaning Products The three most commonly used ‘natural’ home cleaning products are lemon juice, vinegar, olive oil and bicarbonate of soda. These three products can be used to for almost any domestic cleaning chore, in place of synthetic branded cleaners. And because these products are commonly used to cooking, you’ll be able to save space because you’ll be replacing a multitude of different cleaning supplies and products with the four naturally derived environmentally friendly alternatives.

Make Your Own Natural Home Cleaning Products BICARBONATE OF SODA You can make many of your own natural home cleaning products using bicarbonate of soda. Because it has natural deodorising qualities, it can be used to remove nasty and stale smells from shoes, sinks, cupboards, toilets and even fridges! Bicarbonate of Soda or Baking Powder (bicarbonate of soda and cream of tartar) can also be mixed with a small amount of water to create a highly effective cleaning paste. The paste is slightly alkaline, which means that it’s
72 | MARCH 2015
great at cutting through tough grease and grime. Because of this, it is a popular natural cleaner for kitchen and bathroom surfaces. Bicarbonate of Soda can also be used neat as a natural home cleaning product. In this form it is slightly less compromising, meaning that it can be used to combat the tougher and more obstinate stains that have previously proved difficult to remove. It can also be teamed up with a solution of vinegar and water for extra cleaning power.
HOME + LIFESTYLE
VINEGAR
LEMON JUICE
Like lemon juice, vinegar is a great allpurpose home cleaner, thanks in part to its acidic qualities. It can be used on tough grimy patches, or a more diluted solution with water and sprayed on kitchen and bathroom surfaces. It’s best to opt for a subtler-smelling white vinegar (such as white wine vinegar or apple cider vinegar), as using malt vinegar will be far to overpowering. When making your own vinegar cleaner, make sure that you mix the vinegar at a ratio of 1:1 with water.
Lemons have a naturally high level of acid in them, which makes them a perfect home cleaning product. You can make your own lemon cleaner by using either the juice squeezed from lemons, or a shop-bought lemon concentrate that is commonly used in cooking.
Mineral and lime deposits and other bathroom scum can easily be removed with an application of vinegar. Bathroom taps can be buffed and polished, sink and toilet bowls and any ceramic tiles will be gleaming and restored if cleaned with a simple vinegar solution. However, be careful not to use vinegar on any marble surfaces. Vinegar is one of the best, and most likely cheapest window cleaners you can find. Simply give your windows a scrub with a vinegar solution, and watch as all the dirt is lifted away from the glass. The vinegar also provides a smear-free finish, leaving windows literally looking like new. Vinegar is also lesser known for its fabric conditioning properties. People with sensitive skin may want to replace their normal fabric conditioner with vinegar. To do this, simply substitute around ½ cup of vinegar in place of your normal fabric conditioner - you’ll be amazed at the results.
Lemon juice is a fantastic deodoriser, and is particularly good at deodorising smelly kitchen drains. It is well known for its grease-busting qualities, and can be used to clean kitchen and bathroom surfaces, leaving them free of any scum lines or hard water marks. The bonus with lemon juice is that it always leaves behind a pleasant fragrance. This natural cleaner is also great for washing dishes and glasses, as it leaves smooth surfaces looking shiny and new. This is why it is also a popular metal polish - brass and copper in particular come up very well when polished with lemon juice.
OLIVE OIL Olive oil is not only good for your health, but also your home! It can be mixed with lemon juice or used neat to make an effective hardwood furniture polish. Olive oil mixed with grape seed extract, water, soap and lemon juice can also make a good car cleaner for both inside and out, as it can be used on both metal and leather. As with any new cleaning product, it’s always worth doing a small patch test in an inconspicuous area first. This will help you to decide whether you have the right solution for the targeted area, and will reveal if the natural cleaning product you’re using is suitable for the surface. MARCH 2015 | 73

More Storage Space at Glasswells Warehouse Glasswells has been offering companies and individuals tailor-made storage services since 1946. The recent completion of a ten week project; the installation of a new mezzanine floor, has vastly increased storage capacity in the Kempson Way Warehouse. The new metal frame mezzanine has been installed at the front of the warehouse, making use of previously vacant space above the loading bays, and has created an additional 9,000sqft of storage space for customers who use the archiving service. The project, which began in November last year, was completed in January with fire proofing to the structure, painting and the installation of electrics. The new floor holds 230 storage containers, each holding approximately 100 archive boxes over two levels, allowing Glasswells’ customers easier access to their containers. The intention for these containers is two-fold, firstly, they are offered to Companies who have a requirement for document archiving space. In addition to archiving, the service also includes document retrieval and delivery and confidential shredding.
Secondly, containers can be hired by families or individuals who have temporary or longer term domestic storage needs e.g. when they are moving house, but the containers can be adapted for any form of storage in the future. Mr Glasswell said that “the investment of £250,000 into the project will help us to target what we know is a growing market in Bury St Edmunds, as well as freeing up some floor space, which can be used to store larger items for new customers. Another plus is that new and existing customers of our storage facilities will now be able to access their storage boxes without prior appointment during opening hours.” A new Storage Website has been launched in conjunction with the opening of the mezzanine floor, to help promote this thriving, but lesser known side of the Glasswells’ business. The website: www.glasswellsstorage.co.uk gives you an idea of the services on offer, but you do need to see for yourself the full scope of the facilities available. Please phone the Storage Team on: 01284 748762 to make an appointment; they will be very willing to show you round. MARCH 2015 | 77

Bury Rugby Club to move to semi-professional status Bury St Edmunds RUFC is set to move its 1st team squad to a semiprofessional status next season. The decision to make this change has been taken after much consideration by the Club’s Executive Committee, in line with the Club’s ongoing development programme and progression as one of the top rugby union clubs in East Anglia. Bury Rugby Club’s top two senior teams, approximately 30 players, will be contracted on a semi-professional footing for the 2015/16 season. The National Division 3 Club, which is currently sitting top of the league, will implement a system where players in the 1st XV and Wolfhounds teams could potentially receive a modest cash incentive, linked not only to playing but also to attending training sessions. In addition, they will be required to assist with coaching the Club’s flourishing mini and junior sections. Club Chairman, Mike Robinson, speaking on behalf of the committee said, “This is something the committee have thought long and hard about, because we are finding it increasingly difficult to compete against the 78 | MARCH 2015
majority of other clubs at this level who are paying players a match fee. One team in our division has a playing budget of over £100,000, while we’re asking our squads to train twice a week, do fitness work in their own time and then sometimes get on a coach for a four hour journey before a game, currently with no recompense. Therefore this move is now necessary in order for us to be able to attract and retain the calibre of player we need; not only to remain at our current level, but crucially to realise our ambitions and aspirations to become a National 2 Club. Nowadays, players of this standard expect modest rewards in recognition of the commitment needed to compete at this level”. “If we are serious about progressing as a club, about retaining our best young players and attracting others, then this is a step we must now take. It all comes down to having an element of control over our players, due to the commitment they need to make”. Robinson added “Of course the committee recognise that it has to be viable financially, and run on a business model that is selfsustaining. Consequently, our initial budget will be
relatively small. Fortunately our continued success and high profile has meant that we have several supportive local sponsors looking to benefit further from the exposure our success is giving them. Their combined input will enable us to make this significant transition, albeit on a small scale to begin with.” Bury is a professionally run rugby club and past financial prudence has meant that it is debt free and financially stable. A separate limited company has been established that will run the 1st team squad. It will handle payments and, where relevant, tax and NI contributions, along with players’ membership fees. The new Company, Bury Pro-Am Rugby Ltd will be funded by sponsorship from a range of local businesses, meaning that the rest of the amateur Club, including the flourishing youth and mini sections, will not be funding this move; continuing to operate as it has done since the club first started; as an amateur club run by volunteers. This historic move represents the next step in the almost 90 year history of Bury’s successful and thriving community rugby club.

e are now beginning the season of Lent which is one of those periods of time that seem to persist despite the apparent decline in interest in Christianity. Lent is forty days, and six Sundays, starting on Ash Wednesday and finishing on Easter Sunday. They are supposed to remind us of the forty days and nights Jesus spent in the wilderness and the forty years that Moses and the tribes of Israel wandered through the desert until they got to their promised land. Lent
is about preparation for something better and more wonderful. It is about the journey through life. It is also about triumphing over temptation, improving yourself and learning how to walk with God and to be totally dependent on Him.

Spring is in the air and all is good in the world of folk music. The Bury Folk Collective has a busy year in the planning. Our relationship with Oakes Barn provides us a home and support from which to continue to offer exciting events that furthers the appreciation for everything folk to the community. The Bury Folk Collective meets twice a month on Wednesday evenings, and we have 2 Sunday evening events at Oakes Barn. The first Monday of the month is the night for traditional unaccompanied folk singing. We are an inclusive group that welcomes a broad base of folk performers at our evenings. We have blue grass, old time, accoustic, amplified, traditional, the list goes on. No one is ever turned away from performing, and we activly encourage and offer advice to any one seeking their way into performing. Together with Oakes Barn, we have brought folk dancing, Mummer’s plays and music to the fore, and we are proud that we have been able to bring these events to the enjoyment of everyone. Folk is a part of our history, heritage and culture; keeping it alive, fun and available to all is integral to our relationship with Oakes Barn. We are both passionate about its importance and bringing it alive, suprising people into seeing that folk is fun! This summer we bring a first to Bury St Edmunds with a Folk Festival to be held in the walled garden at Nowton Park. Its an exciting time for us and we are hoping that the event will again be a platform to all to appreciate the folk world. We can be contacted through our website: www.buryfolkcollective.co.uk, www. facebook.com/buryfolk, or www.twitter. com/buryfolk. If you would like to perform please contact us, we are keen to widen our folk community. Susan Wilde
Here is a short list of performers who will be performing at the Collective in the next few weeks. The Thursday Band. Invisible Navvies of Utopia, The Leftovers, Paddy Butcher, The Emergers, Kevin Cawser, ‘B’, Brian Burns and Dutch, Bob Goodall and many more. B.K.

CINEMA LISTINGS
CAKE 15 Director Daniel Barnz
Starring Jennifer Aniston, Adrianna Barraza, Anna Kendrick, Sam Worthington, Lucy Punch, Felicity Huffman, William H. Macy
Jennifer Aniston delivers a revelatory performance in this powerful drama of love, loss and pain. Claire Simmons (Jennifer Aniston) seems hard to love, or even like. She’s driven away her husband and all her friends. She’s also alienated members of her touchy-feely chronic pain support group with her sarcastic response to the suicide of fellow sufferer Nina (Anna Kendrick). The only person who remains in her life is paid housekeeper Silvana (Adrianna Barraza). But just as Claire’s life seems to hold no further meaning, Nina starts to appear to her in her dreams and drug-fuelled hallucinations. This drives her to contact the dead woman’s bereaved husband, Roy (Sam Worthington), with unexpected consequences. ‘Beastly’ director Daniel Barnz’s moving, often blackly comic drama of heartbreak, addiction and moving on gives Jennifer Aniston the opportunity to redefine her career with a fearless, vanity-free, Golden Globe-nominated performance. Watch out for the great William H. Macy in a key supporting role.

THE WEDDING RINGER

Director Jeremy Garelick Starring Kevin Hart, Josh Gad, Kaley CuocoSweeting, Ken Howard, Cloris Leachman, Jenifer Lewis, Mimi Rogers, Olivia Thirlby Kevin Hart stars in a comedy about a groom who hires a professional best man - with riotously funny results. Geeky yet lovable Doug Harris (Josh Gad) has somehow managed to persuade gorgeous Gretchen Palmer (Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting) to marry him. But there’s a problem. Doug doesn’t have a best man. A pal points him in the direction of Best Man Inc. - a company whose slick CEO Jimmy Callahan (Kevin Hart) has prospered from men in his predicament. Trouble is, Doug doesn’t just require a flattering best man to make him look good. He needs seven additional groomsmen to complete the deception. Jimmy accepts the challenge and supplies a bunch of the most unlikely looking misfits. Now they’ve got just one week to become lifelong best friends! This outrageous wedding comedy in the style of ‘The Hangover’ and ‘Bridesmaids’ is a magnificent vehicle for the prodigious comic talents of ‘Ride Along’ star Kevin Hart.
CINDERELLA
PG
Director Kenneth Branagh Starring Cate Blanchett, Lily James, Richard Madden, Stellan Skarsgard, Holliday Grainger, Sophie McShera, Derek Jacobi, Helena Bonham-Carter
Disney’s sparkling live-action version of the fairy tale about an ordinary girl who wins the heart of a prince. ‘Downton Abbey’ star Lily James takes the title role in Disney’s first live-action version of this much-loved yarn. ‘Thor’ director Kenneth Branagh is behind the camera. The superlative cast includes Cate Blanchett and Derek Jacobi - plus Helena Bonham Carter and the fairy godmother!
FOCUS Director Glenn Ficcara, John Requa Starring Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Rodrigo Santoro Will Smith stars as a brilliant conman who’s thrown off his game by a beautiful novice in this dazzling caper. Nicky (Will Smith) is a veteran master of misdirection. So when an attractive young woman named Jess (Margot Robbie) makes a clumsy attempt to con him, he’s naturally intrigued. He agrees to teach her the tricks of his unusual trade. But after romance enters his relationship with this ambitious apprentice grifter, he cuts his ties. Three years on, Nicky is involved in setting up an elaborate, dangerous, high-stakes con at the heart of the Buenos Aires motor racing world. Enter Jess, who’s developed into an accomplished femme fatale. For the first time, Nicky loses control of the swindle. From ‘Crazy Stupid Love’ directors Glenn Ficcara and John Requa, this delicious, sexy, fastpaced comedy-drama showcases Will Smith at his charming best. Rising star Margot Robbie, of ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ fame, proves a perfect foil.

Tollgate Primary School a new school...
Having been through a number of challenging years, Tollgate School joined the Bury St Edmunds AllThrough Trust in July 2014. Officially, it became a new school under new leadership, headed up by Mrs Alison Earl (who was the head teacher at the Trust’s ‘Outstanding’ Barrow Primary). Working in an all-through education system means that the children attending Tollgate have a guaranteed pathway through the Trust’s middle phase and on to the ‘Outstanding’ County Upper.
We are proud and delighted that recent monitoring reports confirm rapid, strong and sustained improvement with consistently good outcomes for children in all areas of the school. The new leadership team, the dedicated governing body, our inspiring teachers, committed parents and enthusiastic happy children are all working towards achieving an excellent outcome at the next Ofsted inspection. If you would like to find out more or secure a place here at Tollgate, we encourage you to visit and see the school in action. Simply contact us to arrange a visit. We would be delighted to have the opportunity to show you around and answer any questions you may have.

CHARITY EVENT AT THE MACEBEARER!
Cerebral palsy affects every 1 in 400 children either before birth or during early childhood. Young local girl Teigan- Rose Bayliss was only two weeks old when she contracted Meningitis and was hospitalised for a substantial amount of time. It was then discovered that she had developed Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy. At such a young age it has been a difficult few years for Teigan-Rose and her family. However, the Stars Foundation has supported them all through such demanding times in order to give Teigan-Rose an opportunity to lead a full and independent life. The charities main aim is to raise awareness of Cerebral Palsy and to buy mobility and educational aids for people who cannot gain help elsewhere. The continued support and ongoing of the charity depends on fundraising and the generous nature of volunteers. On Friday 24th April The Macebearer are hosting a charity night in order to raise as much money as possible for Stars Foundation for Cerebral Palsy. We have Joe Cook performing his Michael Jackson Tribute, raffles and much more! Please come along to support such a worthy cause! For more information on the charity event, how to donate a raffle prize or to find out more about The Stars Foundation please contact The Macebearer Pub on 01284 752880 or visit the JustGiving page at https://www.justgiving. com/TeiganSmile/ The Macebearer Home Fame Lane Bury St Edmunds Suffolk IP33 2RH

The moreton hall community centre
news
Hello all, welcome to the March update from the Moreton Hall Community Centre and Club! Hello everyone. Lovely to see the nights getting shorter and the mornings getting lighter! I hope you’re all getting ready for Spring, which means that we are making plans for our annual Easter extravaganza! This year we’re having a new entertainer come to us who is the purveyor of exotic animals, including most excitingly, a baby crocodile! This is happening on Easter Sunday in the afternoon, after of course the annual Easter Egg Hunt, free for members of course and a £2 fee for any nonmembers children that want to join in. This is Easter Sunday on the 6th April, the activities will start at 11am and continue all day! There is a sign-up sheet on the bar, so make sure you get your children’s names down as soon as possible, as in previous years we have run out of space, it is a first come first serve event. You will need your membership card when booking, so please remember to bring it with you. Back to March, on Saturday 7th we are having the first darts tournament of the year at the club! Registration will start at 8pm, is £5 entry with all proceeds going towards the cash pot for the winning player! On Saturday 14th, the second Saturday Night Bingo will take place, with the usual format of playing for cash, and to fill up the pot at the third bingo session on April 14th, where there will be enormous pay-outs up for grabs! All Saturday night
bingo starts at 8pm in the Clubroom. The day after, it is of course Mother’s Day. For those that want to treat their Mum this Mother’s Day, why not come down to the clubroom and partake in our lovely 3 course menu, constructed especially for the date. To view the menu, come to the bar or subscribe to our emails to have a look – at £9.95 for 3 courses of freshly cooked, delicious food, it’s well worth it! (£6.25 for children). Mum’s dining with us will also get a special treat at the end of the meal. To book, email us on info@moretonhallcommunity centre.co.uk, or contact us on 01284 763402. On Saturday 21st March, one of our members Colin is putting together a general quiz, all proceeds going to charity and with prizes up for grabs for the winning teams! He is supporting Clic Sargent, who helps children with cancer and their families, so come down to support a good cause and have an entertaining night! Starts from 8pm.. And then on 28th March, we are holding a hilarious Big Breakfast challenge at the Club, all in aid of Age UK. The brave participants will be trying to eat a breakfast of absolutely gargantuan proportions, so big that it is very likely to put you off partaking in a full English ever
again. But for one, glorious night, all in the name of charity, contestants will be trying to eat a massive cooked breakfast to raise some money, heroically taking the risk of being put off bacon for life. We will have a raffle on the night as well, with loads of prizes up from grabs – come down to support, or if you fancy taking on the challenge (and in fairness, getting a free meal), contact us at the Club! We’ve had a few changes to our food offering at the club – on Fridays we offer all of our bar menu (excluding steak and ribs) for the very modest and brilliant price of £3.99 from 12-2pm! And on Sundays we continue to do what we think of as the best roast in town, except now we offer it as a standalone for £5.95, 2 courses for £7.20 or 3 courses for £7.95! Every Sunday from 12-6pm, with the exception of special events like Mother’s Day on 15th March. With lots to do in the coming month, come see us for a drink and maybe, just maybe, we’ll get an opportunity to enjoy some sunshine on our patio! Hope to see you all soon!
