Hello
And welcome to the April issue of the Moreton Hall Directory. Easter is one of my favourite times of the year (no, not because the kids leave lots of chocolate lying around, although that helps), but because it usually marks the start of the lighter evenings, brighter weather and all round general cheeriness for the next few months (or until the chocolate runs out!). On the opposite page, we’ve picked out some of the very best things we’ve seen this month whilst shopping around, purely in the interest of research by the way. Lot’s of pastels going on this season, and hey, who doesn’t want a Percy Pig Easter Egg? Complete with hundreds and thousands pants! Do you know anyone who lives on the Moreton Hall and is aged between 13-17? Please let them know about an acoustic music evening at The Coffee House on Thursday 10th April. They can grab a free coffee, listen to some music and have a chance to share their ideas about future events for young people on the Moreton Hall, see pages 59 & 67 for more info.
CLAY EGG BASKET KENDALL & KO £14.99
There’s so much packed into this issue, but I’ve run out of room to tell you all about it! (Too much rambling above). So you’ll just have to get comfy on the sofa and have a look through for yourself. We hope you enjoy!

Stop THE SPOTS
health & beauty
We’ve all woken up to the horror of a big bad boy spot, but what can you do to actually prevent breakouts? Quite a lot so it seems... First we need to understand the basic causes of spots. There are a few culprits: a mix of genetics and hormones, and, to a lesser degree, hygiene and diet. While only the latter two are in your control, they can make a big impact on your skin. Here’s how slight shifts in your skin care routine and eating habits might keep your complexion clear.
brushes regularly. If you tend to break out, it’s best to avoid heavyduty oil-based makeup.
Hygiene helpers
An exfoliating brush or gentle washcloth can help too, as they “remove dirt and impurities more efficiently than using the hands.
Most dermatologists advise patients to always remove makeup before bed and clean makeup
When washing your face, opt for a cleanser with salicylic acid and follow up with a pore-minimising toner like witch hazel, dousing a flannel with witch hazel and wiping your face first thing in the morning and before you exercise.

If you’re breaking out around your forehead and hairline, your hair products may be to blame. So avoid greasy hair products especially around the face, and sweep your hair off your face with a headband when sleeping or exercising.

scarring. And most important of all, however tempting it is, resist the urge to squeeze spots, or you risk permanently scarring your face.
And you’ve heard this before, but don’t forget to drink plenty of water throughout the day to help flush toxins out of your system. H2O also helps skin regenerate. Your skin renews itself every two to three weeks, as the uppermost layer of cells flakes off and a lower layer rises to the surface. Adequate hydration keeps this process moving along smoothly.
Top tip
So you have a breakout. Now what? Because diet and hygiene are only part of the acne equation, you may still suffer from breakouts occasionally due to hormones, stress and genetics. It’s important to keep up your skin care routine no matter what. However, if you’re breaking out with inflammatory, painful acne, go see a dermatoligist. Early attention means less
Keep a daily log of your diet and your complexion’s appearance for two weeks, which can help you spot any trends between certain foods and breakouts. If you do notice a pattern, eliminate the food for four weeks and see if your skin condition improves.

Director, The Self Centre
Can our Diet and Lifestyle affect our mental health? by Yvonne Green Eating therapist and counsellor A recent article in Therapy Today (Feb 2014) has highlighted that there may be a place for mental health practitioners to investigate health, diet and lifestyle issues with all their clients as a matter of course. The author Nicola Terry says ‘Awareness of their body and minds responses to their dietary lifestyle may, empower clients to develop a better degree of control over their health and emotional wellbeing. The article describes how clients who are ‘running on empty’, getting by on sugar fixes and caffeine or simply not drinking enough water are creating additional problems and reducing their ability to cope. The author found a huge amount of research into mental health, nutrition and dietary lifestyle. These included links between nutrient deficiency, mental illness and aggression and the impact of food additives on children diagnosed with ADHD. In addition insufficient levels of Omega 3 and consumption of processed sugar and caffeine are all significant with regards to depression. Are we aware of how the food we choose affects our mood and emotional wellbeing and in addition our ability to cope with work, life problems and stress.
And what about Dieting or Yo Yo dieting? Research has also shown that this can affect our mental health.
The Minnesota Starvation Experiment, was a clinical study performed at the University of Minnesota between November 19, 1944 and December 20, 1945. The investigation was designed to determine the physiological and
psychological effects of severe and prolonged dietary restriction and the effectiveness of dietary rehabilitation strategies. The study included a 24-week starvation phase, during which the caloric intake of each subject was drastically reduced—causing each participant to lose an average of 25% of their pre-starvation body weight; and finally a recovery phase, in which various rehabilitative diets were tried to re-nourish the volunteers. Among the conclusions from the study was the confirmation that prolonged semi-starvation produces significant increases in depression and hysteria. Indeed, most of the subjects experienced periods of severe emotional distress and depression. Participants exhibited a preoccupation with food, both during the starvation period and the rehabilitation phase. Sexual interest was drastically reduced, and the volunteers showed signs of social withdrawal and isolation. The participants reported a decline in concentration, comprehension and judgment capabilities. There were marked declines in physiological processes indicative of decreases in each subject’s metabolic rate (the energy required by the body in a state of rest), reflected in reduced body temperature, respiration and heart rate. Some of the subjects exhibited edema in their extremities, presumably due to decreased levels of plasma proteins given that the body’s ability to construct key proteins like albumin is based on available energy sources.
The remedies and advice suggested in this article are the personal opinion of the author. Please also inform your GP if you are planning to take any natural remedies and you are already on long term prescribed drugs.

health & beauty This study is widely recognized as showing the harmful affects of prolonged dieting.
If we can do just one thing then think about Blood Sugar Levels. Not eating regularly lowers blood glucose levels which means tiredness, lack of concentration, irritability, low mood and cravings. Have a good quality breakfast, a snack at break, a proper lunch followed by a snack at 3pm. Then a dinner in the evening. This is eating regularly, every 2-3 hours , good quality complex carbs (brown rice, pasta or bread) a portion of protein and plenty of vegs with a small amount of fruit plus snacks such as sunflower seeds, almonds, brazil nuts or oatcakes. Avoid sugar and caffeine and drink plenty of water. Try it for a few days and see how you feel. Restoring blood sugar levels alone has enabled some eating disorder clients to recover. It is key to levelling mood and making good decisions.

Normal eating is being able to have some restraint in your food selection to get the right foods but not being so restrictive you miss out on delicious foods. Normal eating is trusting your body to make up for your mistakes in eating Normal eating is giving yourself permission to eat sometimes when you are happy, sad or bored or because it feels good.

Here are some reassuring thoughts about eating... Normal eating is three meals a day and possibly two snacks, most of the time, but it can also be choosing to continue munching. It is leaving some cookies on the plate so you can have some more tomorrow or it is eating more because they taste so wonderful and are fresh today.

health & beauty This month Sue Lucente advises us on how we can choose a diet that suits our body...
As I write this, the sun is shining and people are appearing from their homes to venture outside and enjoy the early spring warmth. Now is the time that we suddenly realise that we may have put on a few pounds over the winter months. Our thoughts turn to summer holidays and the daunting prospect of fitting into swimwear. Looking and feeling good on the beach or by the pool has an effect on how much you will enjoy your well earned holiday. If you start changing your diet now you will have enough time to achieve the body you want before your holiday. Weight loss is different for everyone, a diet that works well for one person may not work so well for another. The healthy way to lose weight is at a steady pace. Aim to lose 2lbs a week. Diets that promise quick weight loss are not healthy or sustainable for any length of time. Really low calorie intake diets can make you feel tired , cause headaches, make you feel irritable and of course hungry. Other diets work by cutting out certain food groups, be it either carbohydrates, fats, dairy etc. our bodies are designed to function by having an intake of all of these food groups, each of these provide certain vitamins and minerals . If you deprive it of one or more of these food groups it will not be able to function to its full potential. Weight loss is not only about looking good but feeling good too. By losing weight at a sensible rate you can still provide your body with all the
14
The Moreton Hall Directory
vitamins and minerals it needs to function properly. You can feel the health benefit of losing those extra pounds. Reducing your risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease , high blood pressure to name but a few. Exercise also plays an important part in weight loss. Not only does it burn calories it will make you feel good too. Start gently and gradually increase the amount you do. Try to build it into your daily routine. Perhaps walk or cycle instead of taking the car. If you would like a healthy diet plan designed specifically for you, please contact me.

Setting small goals to help you achieve the ultimate goal. Most of the clients I train are looking to lose body fat and tone up. A lot of clients, before seeing me, judge this goal by the weight they see on the scales. In my opinion this is only one of many factors I use to determine how well my clients are doing. To achieve noticeable results, which you can see in the mirror or how clothes are fitting you, takes a long time. In a world where we want instant results we can lose motivation if our ultimate goal isn’t achieved within 6 weeks. Therefore if you’ve lost motivation since setting yourself a New Years Fitness Resolution, did you have small goals based on gym performances? For example I use the following tests with my clients: n plank n press ups in a minute n squat hold
Psychological development (increased well being and feeling happy) Decrease in levels of depression Increased day to day energy Improved memory and focus Sleep improvements (deep restful) Less aches and pains Digestive health improvements Skin health improved Balanced blood sugar Less frequent colds and flu Improved cholesterol level Optimal blood pressure Increased sex drive Improved strength So if you have long term goals, set small short term goals to keep you focused.
n 1 mile run n 1 rep max Not only should we focus on results we can see, training helps with the following:

NEWS FROM MORETON HALL RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION
Our Chairman of the past three and a half years has reluctantly decided to stand down causing a bit of reorganisation within the MHRA committee. Mike Bacon led us successfully through the formation of the Association and has given us a firm foundation for its continuation. Membership of the committee has recently increased, there is room for more and it has been decided that meetings will be held once a month in a bid to keep everybody up to date and ready for the deluge of Planning Applications from developers and the twists and turns of the Councils. An Open Meeting is being planned for 12th May at 7.30pm to listen to and where possible act on the views, both positive and negative, of the residents of the Moreton Hall. An exercise that will almost certainly be carried out by other community bodies in the Borough. If needed the Community Centre bar is close by. • The Link/Relief road and major works at The Rookery Junction (A14).
Will it help or hinder traffic flow for residents? (Not our Ward) • Community Football Project should it be a stand alone project or is revised scheme to fit available funding and shared facilities with new school a good idea? • Schools will be discussed and there will be briefings by Council representatives on the current position including a new Upper School. • Traffic Flow A134 from A14 towards Stowmarket, replace roundabouts with traffic lights plus prioritising traffic flow? • Waste Transfer Station is it really a good idea to position it next to a lorry park, Residential area and congested traffic route? Borough and Town Councils say No, County Council say Yes.......... Archie Wotherspoon

Let’s help Daniel raise £2000! Hi everyone! You may of seen me running in and around Bury over the past 6 months. I will be running the London Marathon on the 13th April for the charity Clic Sargent in memory of my late girlfriend. On the 8th October 2009, my girlfriend sadly lost her battle with cancer at the young age of 24. Clic Sargent were amazing with the support they gave me, Shelley and everyone affected by this. I previously have done a skydive and recently ran the silverstone half marathon for Clic Sargent. Next, I have the London Marathon followed by 3 spartan races (assault courses) in the next few months. I would like to take this opportunity to ask for your help in raising as much money as possible. I am aiming to raise £2000!

Haart Bury St Edmunds scoops top company awards Haart of Bury St Edmunds is celebrating after scooping multiple awards at the estate agency’s annual conference and awards ceremony – with the top performers winning a trip of a lifetime to Abu Dhabi. Branch Manager Melanie Mills said: “Everyone here works really hard to get it right for customers so it was great to be recognised as the best among our peers.” Melanie was runner-up as top branch manager and the branch was top for profit, legal bankings and banked income. Justine Hoy, Senior Negotiator, won in two categories – top lister on bankings and most homes sold out of the entire company. This was her 5th year in a row. The awards were presented by TV

Moreton Hall’s Monthly Nature Watch by Woodland Ways
Moreton Hall’s Wildlife A – Z part 5
Wi air ne
With spring well under way, and birds waking us up in the mornings, here is the final part of Woodland Ways’ A – Z of our wildlife.
Underground wildlife is
more amazing than you think. Earthworms are massive compared to the tiny animals such as tardigrades, the 0.5mm long animals which live in the tiny drops of water within soil and look like not-very-cute teddy bears.
Violets grow wild in the woods and grasslands of Moreton Hall, where its not too shady and where the land isn’t disturbed. The garden pansies and violas were bred from native violets. Woodland Ways Pond, at Gibbon Close, doesn’t always hold water. With this winter’s rain, amphibians loved it. In March there was masses of frog spawn and at least twenty toads croaking audibly. A third amphibian, the smooth newt, has been seen in previous years and may be present this year too.

Bu an tec ay
Yaffle, the word which
Fo us

allegedly describes the sound made by green woodpeckers. Seen occasionally in Moreton Hall, looking too tropical to be an English bird, they are great eaters of ants and soil animals.
Ta ex
Zebra spiders are small black
and white animals which live on garden walls and house walls, especially south-facing, and are common in the summer. Poke gently at them and they will jump smartly out of the way. Most amusing! They also jump on their prey and don’t make webs.

LAWSON PLACE PARKING
St Edmundsbury Borough Council, in consultation with councillors and local businesses, have come up with a plan to help sort out the parking problems in and around Lawson Place. Businesses will be given parking permits for their staff and long term customers, other visitors will be allowed three hours to complete their business and move on. This I understand is to prevent people from leaving their cars parked all day, thereby blocking up the car park for shoppers.
The Council also want to encourage staff and others who know they will be staying for long periods to use the car park off Heldhaw Road again freeing up customer’s parking. We hope that this will help businesses and customers alike.
Cycle Pathways I have received a few emails concerning the markings on the cycle paths. On quite a few of the pathways the lines have worn away and need replacing. One email was also concerned about what side the cyclist should be on and having spent some time watching the behaviour of the pedestrians and cyclists, I must agree with him and have conveyed this to the council, hopefully they will take notice. Another point made was again about bells on bikes, that said so many people walk listening to their iPads, they would not hear the bells. Common courtesy should prevail, live and let live.
BURY FESTIVAL
This year’s festival is full of very interesting events, Brass Bands and large classics like the Suffolk Philharmonic Orchestra, performing Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll , Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5, ‘Emperor’ and his Symphony no. 6 ‘Pastoral’. Workshops, comedy, jazz and some weird and wonderful stuff. Come along and enjoy our festival, a lot of hard work goes into planning and running of it, don’t miss out. It all starts on Friday 16th May until Sunday 25th May. Programmes are available from the Apex or the Tourist Information office. There are lots for everyone to see and get involved with. The only sad thing for me is, there is no Beating Retreat. This to me kick started the Festival and there are no Tribute Bands in the Abbey Gardens again, these were great Family and friends get together nights, I have already had phone calls and emails asking why not. The answer I got was the costs.
Good news! The drop in centre for the over 60 starts on the Tuesday, 6th May in the Youth Centre. Doors open at 11am until 12.30. This will be run alongside a councillor’s surgery. Come along and enjoy a chat or a game of pool, listen to some 60’s music and bend your councillors ears. It would also be a chance to catch up with other folk from the estate. Maybe organise a few outings and any other interests you may have, there is always a nice cup of tea and if you’re lucky a biscuit, if nothing else it will get you out of the house.

Christ Church Moreton Hall As we approach Easter the children will be on holiday well before we celebrate this most Holy day in the Christian calendar. The people of Israel 2000 years ago were also on holiday celebrating the historic feast of Passover. They were remembering when the tribe of Israel left Egypt to begin their journey to the Promised Land. After many years of waiting it was the death of all the first-born in Egypt that finally persuaded Pharaoh to let them go. The miracle for the Israelites was that the Angel of Death passed-over the houses which were covered with the blood of a lamb and so death did not touch them. The imagery of Passover is central to the understanding of Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection. His death, the death of a first-born, replaces the death of thousands of lambs that were sacrificed that first Passover. Christians believe that because of His death and resurrection they begin a new journey like the exodus of the Israelites which starts in this life and ends in the promised land of heaven. When they come to the last great barrier of death they will pass-over into this new life because of Jesus’ sacrificial death. All this imagery is lost on us in our modern age of supermarket convenience foods, instant gratification, and financial driven convenience. That is, until you watch the film Gravity. Once you get past the fantastic visual effects you are faced with the fact that this is a story about a highly intellegent woman who is still mourning for a dead child she believes she is cut off from. She has no faith and yet she has to escape
30
The Moreton Hall Directory
from an alien environment (outer space) and through a most incredible journey she returns to earth safely. Central to her escape is her companion who both gives her the information to enable her escape and then sacrifices himself in order that she can do it. Through the series of events she begins to pray and while the film is not about her becoming a Christian, she does find inner peace and reconnects with life and believes that her child is somewhere safe with the man who has saved her.
This message is central to all our lives and that is why Christians will be celebrating it with the Passion Play in the town centre on Good Friday (18th April) and in all our churches and cathedrals on Easter Sunday (20th April). If any of the above resonates with you, or you have deep concerns which are unresolved in your life, why not join us and perhaps you will find the answers that you need to lead your life now and to have confidence in the future.
Many of us have faced great tragedies in our lives we have never fully recovered from and there is great uncertainty as to what happens to us and to them after death. The whole wonder of Jesus Christ’s coming is that addresses these central concerns in our lives. By dying and rising again He shows that death is not the end and something better awaits us all if we put our trust in Him and begin to pray.
Yours sincerely,
With every good wish,
Revd. Canon Jonathan Ford. Minister Christ Church Moreton Hall

Are we nearly there yet?
Vauxhall’s intelligent entertainment can break car boredom With spring fast approaching, families in Suffolk will soon be planning trips and travels to occupy those brighter days. However for many, taking to the road can often mean fights over music, getting lost and backseat boredom. Fortunately, for drivers with smartphones, local retailer, Drive Vauxhall is on hand with a range of Vauxhall models that offer cutting-edge in-car infotainment, ideal for keeping the family entertained and the driver on the right road. Several models are available from the retailer on Cotton Lane with Vauxhall’s next-generation IntelliLink infotainment technology, which can make all the differences to journeys. From the capable Mokka SUV, spacious New Insignia range, soft-top Cascada and urban chic city-car ADAM to the familyfriendly Zafira Tourer, Meriva and Astra HB5 & Sports Tourer models, there are a variety of features that drivers and their passengers could access, thanks Vauxhall’s Intellilink infotainment systems. What’s more, Vauxhall has now introduced the intuitive and user-friendly IntelliLink to the Astra GTC range as an optional extra, too.
Fingertip technology for trouble-free entertainment The innovative technology is compatible with a range of operating systems. Depending on the system available, the in-car technology could enable drivers to access functionality such as satellite navigation, voice control, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, as well as being able to view pictures and album art, all via high-resolution displays. Sarah Ferrari, Market Area General Manager at the retailer on Cotton Lane, comments: “IntelliLink technology is offered in a range of models and can help drivers and their passengers enjoy more entertaining journeys. With spring coming up, it’s a great time to get behind the wheel in a new model that can offer interesting travels for all the family!
easy to use and allows effortless control of functionality, as well as being able to show image and movie files on selected models. This means motorists can make calls, play their family’s favourite songs and more, whilst keeping their eyes and their focus on the road ahead. Certain models also come with a satellite-navigationenabled system and full Europe mapping, making them ideal for families. IntelliLink can be updated throughout ownership too, to ensure the in-car infotainment is just as up to date as a user’s mobile communication. Furthermore, to make using the system even easier, additional equipment is also available, including steering wheel mounted audio/phone controls and a hands-free microphone.
“As such, we are inviting motorists looking for a new vehicle to visit our dealership and find out which IntelliLink-enabled model will best suit their needs – and keep travel boredom at bay!”
Whatever model customers choose, Vauxhall offers peace of mind for the life of their vehicle via its industry-leading Lifetime Warranty. Available to the first owner, the warranty is valid for the lifetime of the vehicle up to a maximum of 100,000 miles.
IntelliLink-compatible infotainment systems feature AM, FM and will play virtually any digital music thanks to their Bluetooth connectivity and appready capability. Plus, IntelliLink is

South Suffolk Show 2014 Come and have some fun at The South Suffolk Show on Sunday 11th May.
Foodies will be in their element in the Food Hall, with its tempting delicacies on offer.
A traditional one day agricultural show, ‘The South Suffolk’ has plenty to offer all the family.
Shopaholics will be kept busy with the numerous trade stands.
We are thrilled to have ‘The Monster Trucks’ as this year’s grand ring attraction, to fuel the amusement of petrol heads with their car crushing tricks and stunts with giant wheels.
And for all those young at heart there’s the funfair…
Animal lovers will be spoilt for choice with pigs, sheep, cows, donkeys and horses on show, along with ‘The Suffolk Gundog Club’, ‘The East Anglian Terrier Club’, ‘The Eagle Heights Falconry Display Team’ and ‘The Sheep Road Show’ who are all back by popular demand for your entertainment. Gardeners will feel at home amongst our ever growing ‘Gardeners Delight Area’, - a haven dedicated to the green fingered.
The committee are delighted to announce Mr Fred Branwhite as Show President this year. A farmer from Belchamp Otten, he began stewarding at the show in the 1960’s following a family tradition started by his Great Great Grandfather who first served on the show committee in 1894. Chairman of The South Suffolk Agricultural Association Ltd, Jim Mann says: “After some significant changes to the layout of the show in recent years we think that we now have a winning format, - come and see for yourself!”.

by Andrew Southwood It was either a costly lapse in concentration, or a generous offer. I was so tired at the meeting that, even now, I can’t really remember which? To be honest it’s not important, either way, it was in the minutes, and my name was down. Yes, I was to visit the school during ‘eco week’. Not content with just taking a passive role, I decided to try and get involved and offered to bring in some ‘eco’ related things to talk about. I should perhaps point out that my line of work is vaguely related to this subject and I guess I am pretty enthusiastic when it comes to environmental issues.
I feared that even this was raising their expectations of my session a bit too high. Still, the first class dutifully filed in and sat down in front of me, 30 pairs of eager eyes trained on me, waiting for something to happen.
My son was obviously excited at the prospect of me coming in to talk to his class. The other children had been told that a ‘special guest’ was coming in.
I’m not sure about them, but I learnt a lot. I learnt that not all 5 year olds are quite as geeky as my son when it comes to knowing about recycling.
They quickly recovered from the initial disappointment of me not having a hedgehog in After a quick chat with the my box, as one child had hoped. teachers a few days before (I So I passed round a selection believe this is called ‘lesson of random energy saving planning’ to those in the know!), I items, from sheep’s wool loft was confident I had it all in hand. insulation, to wind up radios My props were collected and and tried to engage with the my freebies (every memorable children as best I could. I learnt that they are sponges and hang off your every word, regardless of what it is you are saying. I also learnt that it is impossible to second guess these kids when it comes to the sorts of obscure questions they might ask. Finally, as I walked home, physically and mentally exhausted, I realised that I had only done one hour in front of the kids. So perhaps my most valuable learning point from the entire experience was that to teach and engage with a class of young children for a whole day requires far more energy and patience than I have ever had. With this new found respect, I happily logged into my computer, cuppa in one hand, and with some relief proceeded to start my work which, that day at least, felt ridiculously comfortable.

What’s been happening at... Abbots Green Community Primary School
To celebrate National Science & Engineering Week the children at Abbots Green have been taking part in some very special scientific activity afternoons. Each afternoon the children have been leaving their own classrooms to work within their colour teams (mixed age ranges) taking part in fun and exciting science activities. By the end of the week they had all experienced some wonderful learning opportunities. ‘Save our Bees’ taught the children about the importance of bees and how to create their own bee homes; ‘Colour Chaos’ gave them the chance to learn about what makes and changes colours and resulted in producing some splendid rainbow fish; ‘Einstein’s Birthday Party’ involved slime and bubbles; and ‘Sounds Like Music’ investigated volume and pitch and featured lots of singing, dancing, and homemade musical instruments. Colour Chaos was a definite favourite with Izzy from Orchid Class “It was great

watching what happened to the ink in the middle of the filter paper!” The inspiration behind the messy activity was Einstein’s Birthday. “I really enjoyed experimenting with bubbles especially trying to make different shapes and sizes” reported Holly. Getting messy was a definite favourite with the boys – “I liked it when the gloop ran through my fingers” said Eduard and M-J added “Gloop is REALLY messy!” The children had the opportunity to ask and answer scientific questions within every activity. Miss Lockwood, our Year 4 teacher, was impressed by the children in Orchid Class behaving as good role models to the younger children within the school. Christina in Orchid Class really appreciated working with a mixed age range, especially the younger children “because we got to know them more” and everyone concluded that science is DEFINITELY fun!

Gardening Tips by Paul Clarke 52
The Moreton Hall Directory
Welcome to Gardening Tips a monthly feature providing you with hints and ideas of what to do each month in your garden. Along with a list of jobs that will enable you to enjoy and maintain your garden I will also feature a plant of the month. I have been a gardener for many years and run a small business called Pauls Garden Services.

Pauls Jobs for the Month
General Maintenance
l Dig out perennial weeds before they establish and self seed l Water newly planted trees and shrubs if we have any dry spells l Add lawn clippings to the compost heap
Lawn Maintenance l With the mild winter ,moss has flourished in our lawns. There are two choices with moss, if you don’t like using chemicals use a wire rake to remove. Otherwise use a granular weed and feed product to tackle the moss. l Don’t leave bare patches in your lawn as this will soon be filled by weeds. Instead apply some grass seed. l Tidy and reshape lawn edges with a half moon edger.
Flower Garden l Roses will be putting on a lot of growth and a t tonic such as Sulphur Rose will help to ward off blackspot and mildew. A handful of slow-release organic blood, fish and bone spread evenly about the roots will set up the health of your plants. l Sow sunflower seeds directly into the soil at the end of April l Deadhead camellias as they turn brown to keep the plant looking its best l Cut back old peony stems l Pinch out the growing tips of new shoots on fuchsias as this will help create a more bushy plant l Evergreens, such as rosemary, lavender, bay, sage and thyme, can be pruned as soon as the winter is over.

Magnolias are ‘trees or shrubs with goblet- or star-shaped flowers ‘. Magnolias love the sun and flourish best when kept out of shade. Magnolias thrive in any fertile, moist garden soil. Pruning is seldom required - usually just the occasional removal of deadwood. April is the perfect time to plant Magnolias. Choose a sheltered spot and add plenty of peat to the planting hole. Mulch in spring. flowers are very showy and can be fragrant depending on variety. Magnolia stellata is a good choice. This deciduous shrub is fairly compact so it’s ideal for small gardens. It flowers profusely in early spring, producing delicate-looking flowers which are pure white with a pink-flush.
“Let the rain kiss you. Let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops. Let the rain sing you a lullaby. The rain makes still pools on the sidewalk. The rain makes running pools in the gutter. The rain plays a little sellp-song on our roof at night-And I love the rain.” - Langston Hughes, 1902-1967, April Rain Song
Doing The Jobs You Don’t Have Time For?
Vegetable and Fruit Garden l As soon as the ground reaches 6C you can start to sow broad beans, brussel sprouts, early peas, beetroot, radish, turnips and spinach, carrots and onions. The difficulty is making the choice! To avoid build up of pests and diseases try to avoid growing the same crop in the same part of the garden each year so rotate.
Pauls Garden Services
l Plant first early potatoes. They like lots of sunshine and lots of water.
One Off Jobs or Regular Maintenance on a Weekly or Monthly Basis. Hedge Trimming • Grass Cutting General Weeding and Tidying up.
l You can now plant asparagus crowns.
Prepare your Garden for Winter or Ready for Spring
l If you have space plant an area with strawberries this month. Fork in plenty of well rotted manure as you can. Plant strawberries with their crowns slightly above the ground 12 inches apart and 18 inches between rows

l It is a good idea to mulch around fruit trees and bushes in April, provided the ground is not bone dry when you do it. Use well-rotted manure or garden compost and spread it liberally round all fruit trees l Pick rhubarb that has been growing away under forcers.

LeeStock Music Festival, located in Suffolk, today announced the Lightning Seeds and an acoustic set from Terrorvision as their 2014 headline acts. The festival, which is in its 7th year is held in the grounds of Melford Hall, a Tudor built National Trust property and donates its profits to the Willow Foundation. This year’s festival will take place on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th May. The Saturday of the festival will see the Lightning Seeds, who over their successful career have had 3 top 20 albums and 14 top forty hits, headlining the main stage. Fronted by the iconic Ian Broudie, the Lightning Seeds achieved hit after hit throughout the 90’s including “Pure”, “The Life of Riley”, “Lucky You” and the football themed number 1 collaboration with Baddiel and Skinner “Three Lions”. Ian Broudie said of his appearance at the festival; “We’re looking forward to playing LeeStock, it sounds a great little festival with a great cause. We love playing in front of a live audience and we’re looking forward to coming to Suffolk in May” Terrorvision formed in 1987 and found major success in the mid 90s with their hit albums “How to Make Friends and Influence People” and “Regular Urban Survivors”. The two albums spawned 9 top 40 singles including “Oblivion”, “Perserverance” and were followed by the anthem “Tequila”, their biggest hit reaching number 2 in the UK charts. An acoustic set by the band will close LeeStock festival on the Sunday, following in the footsteps of Cast’s John Power in 2013. Previous headliners at the charity based event include Wheatus, Toploader, Dodgy and Space.
Weekend tickets for the festival are onsale now at www.leestock.org costing just £30 for the weekend and there is also on site camping. To date LeeStock have raised almost £50,000 for the Willow Foundation.

YVES SAINT LAURENT Starring: Pierre Niney, Guillaume Galienne, Charlotte Le Bon, Laura Smet, Marie de Villepin, Nikolai Kinski Director: Jalil Lespert
A sumptuous drama exploring the turbulent personal and professional lives of the great French couturier. In 1957 Paris, 21-year-old Yves Saint Laurent (Pierre Niney) finds himself unexpectedly catapulted to international fame. His celebrated employer Christian Dior has just died suddenly and Yves is appointed his successor. At his first catwalk show, he meets Pierre Bergé (Guillaume Galienne), who will become his lover and business partner. His rise to the pinnacle of the fashion industry suffers a temporary setback when he’s fired. But Yves and Pierre bounce back, creating the Yves Saint Laurent fashion house, whose revolutionary ‘ready to wear’ collection shocks the world of couture. Jalil Lespert’s biopic of the charismatic designer who battled personal demons as he democratised fashion in the swinging sixties is handsomely staged and brilliantly acted. Shot on location in Paris and Morocco, it also features original clothes from the Yves Saint Laurent haute couture collection archive.

DVD RELEASE OF THE MONTH PHILOMENA
Starring: Judi Dench, Steve Coogan, Sophie Kennedy Clark Judi Dench and Steve Coogan star in the moving true story of a woman’s epic search for her son. Fifty years ago, naive young Irish girl Philomena Lee (Sophie Kennedy Clark) fell pregnant. This landed her in one of the Catholic Church’s notorious Magdalene Laundries as a ‘fallen woman’. Her baby boy was subsequently snatched away by nuns and sold to a rich American couple. Today, Philomena (Judi Dench) is a retired nurse who’s still desperate to track down her son. Former BBC TV correspondent turned government spin-doctor Martin Sixsmith (Steve Coogan) is sufficiently intrigued to help her. The mismatched duo then embark on a journey that creates a surprising bond between them. Adapted from Sixsmith’s book ‘The Lost Child of Philomena Lee’, this is a charming, touching and unexpectedly funny drama. Directed by Stephen Frears, of ‘The Queen’ fame, ‘Philomena’ was received rapturously by critics when it premiered at the Venice Film Festival.

The moreton hall community centre news Hello to all and a belated Happy Mother’s Day, as well as a pre emptive Happy Easter! Speaking of Easter, we’re gearing up for one of our favourite events of the year which is of course the Easter Egg Hunt. This year we will open the doors at 11am, and then start the hunt at 11:30am, so if you’d like to sign up please do pre book now! We have a limited number of spaces left and we must have names before the event so that we can ensure the Easter Bunny has enough supplies for everyone! After the Easter Egg Hunt we will have a game of chocolate bingo, as is tradition, where everyone can join in, then we’ll have a break for the children where they can see “The Tricky Twister” in action at 2:30pm – 4pm. The Tricky Twister is a professional children’s entertainer who will wow you all with balloons and magic galore. Again, we only have limited space so this must be booked in advance with us – if you have already booked the Easter Egg hunt you will be put down for the party as well, but if you just want to come to the party we must know in advance. Back to chronological order – on the 5th April we have Karaoke returning to the clubroom! Starts at 6:30pm on Saturday 5th April, lots of opportunity for you all to impress us (or distinctly the opposite) with your singing! Free entry of course, and everyone, non members, children and all are welcome. Two weeks after that, on 19th April, we have Smartie, our reggae regular returning to the clubroom to perform some brilliant tunes on what will hopefully be a relaxed, balmy evening. He’ll start about 8:30pm, and be sure to bring your dancing shoes as no one can resist bopping along to his repertoire. Again, free entry and absolutely everyone is welcome. On April 26th, we have our grand bingo session, where all of our previous bingo sessions on Saturday night have been paying into the pot for this evening! There will be a couple more chances to win a ticket for the grand bingo game on the night, which will be paying out a fair bit of cash, so do come down and have a go! It starts from 7pm on a Saturday night. Of course we are continuing our bingo every other Tuesday night as well, for those of you that just can’t get enough! This one starts from 8pm, and the next one is 1st April, then the 15th. Looking further ahead, we have one of our bigger events of the year coming up in May which is the 4th Annual Moreton Hall Bury Darts Open! Entry to compete costs just £11, and the top prize for winning the competition is a whopping £800. Anyone of any skill level can enter, but just a fair warning – there will be ex world champions, and PDC players at the event to make sure you test your skills to the absolute limit. For businesses who want to take the opportunity to promote their business, there is also the opportunity
to sponsor a board for £25 plus VAT. This will give you your company’s logo around the board that you sponsor, and all over the documentation for the evening, as well as exposure to a broad audience and other companies. The Moreton Hall Estate is growing, as we’re all aware, but the community centre will remain the sole focal hub, so it’s support from you and events like this that keep us thriving and in turn supporting our own community. Please contact Colin Houghton on moretonhallclub@aol. com if you’re interested. In May we have a fair few events lined up – on Saturday 10th we’re trying out a Game Show quiz, complete with novelty buzzers! This will start from 6:30pm, and will be a great event for a bit of family fun! It’ll be £1 for each person to enter, and as with all of our quizzes, the more people join in, the bigger the cash prize will be at the end! We are planning a sweet eating challenge on 24th May, where you’ll be encouraged (within the bounds of respectability) to eat as many desserts as possible within a time limit! For more details keep tuned to our members emails or please phone the club for details on entering. On to Summer events – we have cricket and rounders tournaments planned for you to participate, with competitions open to both kids and adults! We are also planning a circus workshop for children on July 19th where they can come on by and learn a few circus skills! On this evening we’re also planning a magic/cabaret act that will perform an amazing show for us! Of course we’re now finalising the details for the biggest event in the Moreton Hall Community Centre calendar which is of course the annual funday! This is taking place on Sunday 27th July, and is open to all residents of Bury St Edmunds! We have brilliant attractions, like a helter skelter, zorb balls, a climbing wall, and more as well as stalls and competitions to enter! We will be providing a delicious BBQ as well, so make sure you save the date as it will be, as ever, a fun filled and excellent day. Keep tuned with us to find out more about what we have in store for you – there’s lots coming up, from big Fundays to smaller darts tournaments – if you’re not already on our mailing list, why not drop us an email at moretonhallclub@aol.com to find out more about what’s going on in your community centre. See you all soon!
