I recently decided to get some of the Coco White teeth whitening product that has taken the beauty world by storm. You can only purchase it online and they re-stock it every day at 1pm (with limited stock). They sell out within minutes. I managed to get mine at 1:02pm and they were sold out 2 minutes later. So far, I am about half way through my 14 day treatment and I’m loving it. You can definitely see results, so it’s working. However, there are only two ingredients, coconut oil and flavouring so you could possibly try making your own.

Waste Transfer Site After a long search St Edmundsbury, Forrest Heath and the County Councils, working in partnership have come up with a prospective new site for the Waste Transfer site, to be called the West Suffolk Operational Hub. All three Councils approve moving to this new site. This proposal could enable all three authorities to move facilities to one site, freeing up existing sites for potential development. The new site would include: 1 a depot to manage the councils vehicle fleet 2 a waste transfer station: and 3 a public household waste recycling centre (to replace the one at Rougham Hill) A planning application is expected to be submitted to St Edmundsbury Borough Council, as the local authority, in late spring 2015, but before then the partners want to hear from those who may be affected by the
DOGS
site’s location at Hollow Hill Farm. The preapplication started on March the 6th and closes on Monday 6th April. Information about the proposal and online comments form is available on the website from 6th March: www.westsuffolk.gov.uk/wsoh you can make comments and email this address. Originally it was proposed to put the transfer site on Rougham Hill as part of the recycling unit that’s already there, however due to a lot of opposition, County had to look elsewhere and Hollow Road Farm seems to fit the bill.
Once again I am getting complaints about dog fouling, those of you who have dogs please clear up after your dog, there are plenty of bins around the estate and if you know of an area which does not have a bin let me know and I will get one sorted. We have a lot of children living on our estate and the last thing they want is to step in dog foul on their way to or from school, not to mention the health issues. Be a responsible dog owner, enjoy your dog but respect other people’s space and avoid making problems for them. For those of you who don’t know, the trees are NOT dog bins. There is nothing more unsightly that seeing full dog bags hanging on trees.
Have a lovely Easter, until next time, take care, Frank Warby APRIL 2015 | 09

ABBOTS GREEN Community Primary School Cornflower Class (Year 1) have been unbelievably busy this term but taking part in World Book Day’s Big Book Off challenge has got to be the most fun ever! The children were introduced to the concept of Reading for Pleasure and Writing for a Purpose in an assembly first thing on a Monday Morning. They were then fully immersed in the joy of books for a whole week! The children listened to many different stories in all subjects, learned a whole range of new vocabulary and explored many different ways of responding to texts. They have particularly enjoyed the opportunity to talk about their own favourite books and share a story with their grown-ups with a big mug of hot chocolate in school. As part of this crammed packed week one of the many highlights for the children had to be dressing up as a book character. The children asked so many questions, “What will everybody else be wearing?” “Will people recognise my costume?” “Are the teachers dressing up too?”

During the week we also re-launched our amazing school library – featuring a new magical reading tree, pirate ship and funky bean bag seating. .....And the following week.....we fundraised for two charities. We held a Coffee Morning and sold potted daffodils in support of Marie Curie Cancer Care and wore red along with (very!) badly applied make up for Comic Relief. Big Joe our school giant was decorated with a red nose and our fundraising celebrations featured on ‘Look East’ that same evening – which the children absolutely loved!

Dear reader, Progress of the Forget-Me-Not Dementia Campaign The first phase of work to build a dementia memory walk in the corridors of West Suffolk Hospital has begun - as a fundraising campaign to pay for the project closes in on an amazing £60,000.
Dave Gooderham, Fundraising Manager and chair of the working party, said: “We are delighted the trust has pledged money to improve flooring and lighting in the area.
The Forget-Me-Not Dementia Campaign was launched by West Suffolk Hospital Charity in March of last year.
“This ensures we have a clean slate in which to plan the dementia walk and every penny that has been donated or raised from fundraising can be put solely to improving the area for patients with dementia.
The original aim was to raise £25,000 - a sum achieved just before Christmas - but the Charity has been blown away by the continuing generosity shown by the local community. A £20,000 legacy was donated to the appeal and fundraising events, donations and in-memory donations continue to come in to support the work. After a day room on ward G4 was refurbished and a host of reminiscent training and materials bought from the fundraising, the attention now turns to the dementia walk on the hospital’s G corridor. A working party, containing dementia trainers, champions and key staff members from across the hospital, met for the first time in March.
“The huge generosity shown by the community towards the Forget-Me-Not Dementia Campaign has shown what an important appeal this is. The working party will now be concentrating on investing that money wisely to ensure patients with dementia and their families and carers get the most out of it.” While plans for the dementia walk remain in their infancy, Mr Gooderham said initial ideas were to include landmarks and imagery from towns and villages across the hospital’s catchment area.
At the same, vital work on improving the flooring and lighting in the corridor has begun with West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust committing a significant sum of money to that work.
If you have any questions about fundraising, any of the events mentioned above or how you can help the hospital, please contact fundraising@wsh.nhs.uk or call 01284 712952 12 | APRIL 2015

lords and ladies BY WOODLANDS WAY
L
ords-and-Ladies’s is a plant in the lily family, with its arrow-shaped leaves found commonly in shady places in Moreton Hall such as woods and our retained rural hedges. There are two varieties, one with spotted (‘maculate’ leaves and one with unspotted (‘immaculate’) leaves. In April and May, their flowers appear, consisting of a flower spike partially enclosed in a leaflike hood. It is insect -pollinated, with a faecal smell instead of perfume to attract insects. The leaf-like hood acts as a solar reflector, heating up the flower spike by up to 15°C higher than the rest of the plant. The hotter flower spike is thought to be more smelly when its warm, with the chemicals being more volatile in heat, so it can attract insects from a wider distance.
See if you can find one, try to smell the distinctive smell, and fee to see if you can spot a temperature difference. Be careful, though, because some people can suffer an allergic reaction. The solar reflector is more likely to be effective in sunshine, so pick a flower which is in a patch of sun before the sun moves round and the plant is shaded again. After flowering, the flower spike and hood die off, and later in the summer when trees cast a dense shade, the leaves die back too, replenishing the roots with starch for the future. In autumn, a spike grows again, but this time with a cluster of orange berries held high for birds or mammals to eat and spread the seeds. The berries are poisonous to people, but taste horrible and cause an immediate tingling sensation, so its unusual for serious harm to be caused.
Join us at Woodland Ways... Why not join in with a Woodland Ways work party to help improve the Moreton Hall woods? No experience is needed and all are welcome; we’ll show you what to do. For more information please see www.woodlandways.org.uk, see the Woodland Ways noticeboard in the Community Centre, contact Nick Sibbett on 01284 723847 or email information@woodlandways.org.uk.

How to help
Knee Arthritis
K
By The Abbeyfields Clinic
nee arthritis can develop over just a year or two and cause a lot of damage to your joints, which can lead to deformity or disability. This maybe a result of an injury earlier in your life, or more often it’s a slow process that develops over many years and causes small changes in just part of a joint. Sometimes the condition peaks after a few years and your symptoms remain the same or even get easier which may mean avoiding a replacement! The good news is that the best remedies are fairly simple and Arthritis as a diagnosis doesn’t have to mean ‘no hope’. l Gentle exercise (walking/swimming/ dancing) l Supportive footwear & shock absorbing insoles l Keeping your weight down with a sensible fruit & veg rich diet l Combination treatments involving Medical Acupuncture, Osteopathic Massage/ Mobilisation and Physiotherapy You can also help yourself by applying antiinflammatory creams (always check with your Pharmacist or GP) and non-medicated gels directly onto the knee three times a day. There’s no need to rub them in – they absorb through your skin on their own. They’re especially helpful for osteoarthritis of the knee or hand. They are a good option if you have trouble taking tablets. At Abbeyfields we work together to support your recovery and allow you to move better with less pain. We guide you through a progressive strengthening programme to help support your knee joint. In some cases the knee is too painful to exercise in which case we use combination Electro-acupuncture for pain relief, in tandem with NMES (pads are placed on the skin that then control and contract your muscles for you) for strengthening the muscles around the knee. We might also suggest a simple home device that exercises your muscles for you between treatments. We are Recognised Practitioners for the national charity www.arthritisaction.org.uk

Welcome to the 19th hole, a place for golf tips, reviews and everything golf related.
Welcome back to 19th hole, this month we return to normal after a change with a course review last month. I hope you enjoyed reading about my visit to the Celtic Manor resort and i hope it has made you want to explore more courses either for the a long weekend or even just for the day. This month we will focus our attention on the first major of the year The Masters, alongside this we have a product review and another coach’s point to help you improve your game moving into the golf season. The Masters - Who will be looking good in green this year? This week in the golfing calendar is my personal favourite, There is just something very special about seeing Augusta National in all its glory in early April and testing the worlds very best players for four days straight. So the questions being asked are, will Rory complete the career slam and add The Master’s to his growing wins list? Will Tiger Woods return from his absence from the game in time to join the field at Augusta National? I would love to see Rory win but if not, who could win The Masters this year? Well below is my top three picks from this year’s field. Dustin Johnson, the big hitting American has been in fine form since his return to action. He won the WGC event in Florida last month and i feel that his length and shot shape from the tee will prove an advantage around Augusta. Jordon Spieth, at just 21 years of age this guy is one of the most improving and exciting talents in the world game at the moment. His all round game is very solid, he soaks up pressure well and makes very few errors this combination will make him a contender around this demanding golf course. Last but by no means least Bubba Watson the two time Masters champion, his shot making ability and power are his biggest assets. Couple this with his past success and his early season form on the PGA tour and we could see Bubba picking up green jacket number three. Review Wilson Staff DX2 Soft
of this golf ball allows for long distance results off wood and iron shots and gives the user a great soft feel around and on the greens. The price tag will appeal to many golfers at just £14.00 per Doz. (Price from Bury Golf Range) In my opinion this golf ball will perform well for a big cross section of golfers. When I tested it, it performed as Wilson stated and the price tag is a big plus point for this product so I would say it’s worth a test if you’re looking for a new golf ball for the season. Coaches Corner - Make The Smart Choice The key to your round heading in the right direction is a good short game, often people will decide to play a shot that isn’t the SMART choice, listed below are four types of short game shots in the order you should think of playing them. 1. Putt the ball whenever you have the chance, this shot is a very low risk shot as it spends all of its time on the floor (100%). You will be able to judge how the ball will react throughout the shot, as you can observe the ground levels before you hit the shot. 2. Mid iron or Hybrid chip shot, this shot allows the ball to leave the ground for a very short time (25%) and then complete the remainder of the shot along the floor (75%). Again this allows you to judge the ground before hitting the shot. 3. Short iron chip shot, this shot spends the same amount of time in the air (50%) as it does on the ground (50%). This shot allows you to clear any obstacle and for the momentum to be taken away from the remaining journey along the ground. 4. Lofted iron chip shot, this shot is the highest risk therefore is your last resort. It spends more time in the air (75%) and less time on the ground (25%). This shot allows you to clear large obstacles but it hard to control and should only be taken on if necessary. If you run through these options each time you have a short game shot you will make more smarter decision and get some better results.
Wilson Staff are back, and back with a great range of products in 2015.
I hope this section will help to improve your game, but if you are still struggling with this or any area of your golf game why not contact me for further assistants.
This month I have tested the DX2 soft golf ball, Wilson say it’s “ The Worlds Softest Distance Ball ”, the 29 compression

The remedies and advice suggested in this article are the personal opinion of the author. Please also inform your GP if you are planning to take any natural remedies and you are already on long term prescribed drugs. Always consult a qualified Complementary Practitioner, never self medicate.
Specific conditions treatable: It supports you to positively manage any long term health condition including M.E and Fibromyalgia ( It worked for me!) or in recovery from a long illness or an accident. Or to be as healthy as possible generally. Benefits of therapy: It helps you to relax, de-stress and promotes the re-balancing of your energy fields and enhancing the flow of your energy. Supports you to change any beliefs or statements you have to help you move forward positively in your life. It teaches you what groups of foods drain your energy and what groups provide the most energy and exercises to energise you. How it works: using contemporary coaching skills and the four modalities, Reiki Healing is also used in Energy balance if appropriate. What happens in a session? Coaching involves talking and goal planning. The energy foods are discussed. Gentle exercises are practised in the room if agreed and appropriate for the client. Energy balance and Reiki healing is done fully clothed on a therapy bed. Usually £45 but £35 for all sessions during the Special Introductory period. Free initial consultation over the telephone or skype. £35 for the first session when £45 is charged.
SPECIAL OFFERS 10% DISCOUNT if you pay for 3 or more sessions in one go. 10% DISCOUNT for Suffolk carers and discount for staff. *Recommend me to a friend who pays for one or more sessions and you get one session at half price!

JOE
MY NAME IS JOE SADLER AND I HAVE BEEN A QUALIFIED PERSONAL TRAINER FOR 5 YEARS, WORKING FROM THE MORETON HALL HEALTH CLUB.
Before going straight into a workout make sure you warm up. Personally I like to use a foam roller (see previous articles for exercises on foam rolling), 2-3 minutes light jog, followed by body weight squats, lunges, and press ups, 30 seconds on each of those exercises. Main Workout 1: Burpees Tabata: Tabata training is: 20 seconds intensity 10 seconds rest 8 sets 4 minutes total time. The picture below shows how to complete a burpee. Perform as many reps as you can per 20 seconds, make sure you complete all 8 sets. Next time you carry out this workout try and beat your previous number of reps.
26 | APRIL 2015
• Be in a standing position and then put your feet shoulder-width apart. Start lowering your body until you reach a squatting position with your hands still placed on the floor in front of you. • Start kicking your feet back in order to come to a push-up-position. Keep your arms firmly on the floor in order to support your body. • Lower the chest to perform a push-up. Start bringing your chest back up. • Put your feet back to the original position. Stand up and jump in the air as you clap your arms overhead.
HEALTH & BEAUTY

HEALTH & BEAUTY
Beating Breast Cancer Sitting listening to Ronan singing ‘Life is a Rollercoaster’ whilst starting this next article…. and it certainly is, and has been this month. Linda
My results came back negative for the faulty BRCA1 & 2 genetic gene, good news in lots of ways but frustrating too! Also up and down this month have been my emotions, mainly revolving around the impending surgery and decision making process that I am going through, potential Radiation Therapy and more generally my thought process on the future and the worry and stress that it will recur. There are no simple solutions, or yes or no decisions through all of this, and no certainty or guarantees! I have struggled a bit more this month (March) following my 5th Chemotherapy. The nausea has been pretty bad on a daily basis and comes and goes throughout the day and night. I’m continuing to take the homeopathic anti nausea pills and they are helping and I have pretty much eaten my way through packets and packets of the Nairns Ginger Oat Biscuits! On the positive side though, I haven’t been physically sick from it! I have lost my appetite a little, but am continuing to eat regularly and a lot. However, 28 | APRIL 2015
I seem to just be craving carbohydrates all the time through this…might explain why I can’t get into my jeans also! The other issue that has caught up with me since all the start of this chemotherapy back in December is the Fatigue. The more sessions I have, the more it is taking its toll on my body! Cancer fatigue is often confused with tiredness. Tiredness happens to everyone and it’s a feeling you expect after certain activities or at the end of the day. Usually, you know why you are tired and a good night’s sleep solves the problem. With this Fatigue it is a total lack of energy; it is excessive whole-body tiredness and rest or sleep is not relieving it! It is preventing me from functioning normally (whatever that is these days!). My real last issue from this has been my cough and cold. I have had this since the end of February and over 3 weeks later whilst writing this, I am still getting through boxes of tissues and have blocked sinuses and a cough. The Immune System protects the body against
illness and infection and is very powerful. Did you know that 80% of your Immune System lies in the mucosal lining of your intestinal tract. It is the first line of defense against bacteria, viruses and cancer cells and has hundreds of functions in the body. So if you feed your body a load of junk your Immune System is going to be compromised. I know my Immune System is weak at the moment due to treatment and all the chemicals that are killing off the healthy cells, but once the chemotherapy has finished, getting my Immune System back on track will be my main focus of attention. I’ve been out a couple of evening’s this month to help celebrate friends birthday’s, but unfortunately I have only managed to have some food and then say my goodbye’s and leave to go home by 9pm! What happened to the nights of getting ready and going out at 9pm for the evening! Those are well and truly behind me now… I also had some girlfriends over for lunch and managed to put together another couple of recipes from the Deliciously Ella book. The meal turned out okay, and I know they enjoyed the Chilli and Beetroot
HEALTH & BEAUTY
Brownies! It is also the first time that we have sat down to a meal and the only drink on the table was sparkling water – now that is a First…! Tillie has been making full use of the garden when we have had some nice weather, sunning herself and watching the birds. So far all she seems to bring me are leaves and bark from the garden…long may that continue! She is now behind me, watching me type, sitting high on the ledge that I use as a bookcase. Sadly looking at all my books, there now seems to be more literature on Cancer than anything else. I had the opportunity of attending the Look Good Feel Better Workshop this month at Addenbrookes Hospital. This is a Cancer support Charity that provides practical and effective free services for women suffering from the visible side effects from cancer treatment. It helps with your self-confidence and the Workshop and Master class covers a 12-step skincare and makeup programme. It was lovely to be with other women in a similar situation. I don’t think you can underestimate the effect make-up can have and the smallest tips and help can make you feel better! I’m still attending the weekly HOPE (Helping Overcome Problems Effectively) course that is run by Macmillan. The last couple of sessions we
have looked at ways of how to respond to physical, emotional and behavioural stress, how to combat stress, breathing, meditation, and mindfulness. We have also covered prioritising, planning and pacing, communication, fatigue and sleeping (quite apt as this is something I am suffering with more so now!). I have had an appointment with the Breast Clinic this month also, and am now trying to make some decisions revolving around my impending surgery. Am finding this quite difficult emotionally as the good old mind is starting to wander all over the place. There are no guarantees with anything in life as we all know, and its hard when you read all the research about Triple Negative Breast Cancer being one of the more aggressive types and more likely to recur within the first few years! I will need to go back to the Breast Clinic to have further discussions and hopefully have a clearer picture in order to proceed. I do hope that they take my concerns and feelings into consideration. Don’t get me started on the next hurdle after surgery… radiation therapy. I am trying desperately to ‘park’ that discussion for later! If anyone has been through this, I would welcome their experiences of it to help me with my decision making
process over the next few weeks. Latest update just added before going to Print…! I have just returned from my appointment with the Oncologist and they are sending me straight to surgery in the next couple of weeks! It would appear that my tumour has slightly increased in size and therefore the combination FEC drug is not being effective. So… NO MORE CHEMOTHERAPY! Suffice to say I am extremely happy with not having to have the chemotherapy anymore. My hair can now start to grow back and all the other side effects should now start to subside! Overall, one part of this journey is now thankfully at an end with all the chemotherapy and therefore it will be time to focus on getting through the next stage in terms of the surgery. Not that I have much time to focus, as I am sure the next couple of weeks are going to pass very quickly. Fingers crossed I will be well enough to write the next article which will now be post surgery! Each day that goes by is another day closer to rebuilding my health and life cancer free. ‘To keep the body in good health is a duty... Otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear’. - Buddha APRIL 2015 | 29

Tim Freathy from the Depden Farm Shop and Café, Rookery Farm was our speaker and he brought along some of the produce he sells for us to try. Following an interesting career he decided to pursue his passion for gardening and sustainability and purchased, with his partner a somewhat rundown farmhouse and land 11 years ago. From a smallholding, pretty garden with beautiful shrubs and borders, this grew to today’s incarnation with the addition of vegetables, fruit trees, nuts, turkeys, sheep and pigs!! After redundancy they opened the Farm shop selling mainly local produce such as smoked salmon, apple juices, cheeses and fresh meat from their own animals or sourced elsewhere. 6 months ago they opened their Care Farm where people with mental disabilities or health issues can come and work with the animals and garden in a therapeutic setting. Already many are blossoming. Another great evening!

Hedgehog decline
how we can help?
A question recently posed in the directory is where have all the hedgehogs gone?
As a great fan of our prickly friends I have some ideas.
The main factors being:1. Changes in the climate, habitat loss, inconsistent seasons causing lack of food and water due to long dry spells. 2. Health problems, they suffer from a large array of conditions mostly related to eating slugs and snails, these ailments are becoming ever more virulent. 3. Pesticides, especially Metaldehyde slug pellets, now also cleverly marketed as animal repellant but what happens when wildlife eat the slugs? Don’t be fooled Metaldehyde kills hedgehogs, birds, pets and even children in any form. A safe effective alternative are Ferrous Sulphate pellets, now easily available. 4. Garden implements- strimmers and mowers can be lethal, look for hedgehogs before you start, they dose in long grass on hot days. Check compost heaps before forking. Place netting above the ground so they don’t get tangled in it.
What can we do:Feeding hedgehogs can be a delightful hobby which will probably give you the chance to catch sight of them, Cat meat based biscuits are ideal, they also like bird peanuts and dried mealworms but never give milk or fish as they cause serious tummy upsets. A large shallow bowl of water available with the food can be a life saver! Many kind people now feed them but stop in the Autumn when really they need us to help them even more, as there is a new litter of hoglets on the scene who need to get their weight up. Many hedgehogs do not hibernate now and appear periodically looking for food in the winter when there is little to be found. Make your garden hedgehog friendly, hole between gardens for access, logs or small branches piled in a corner make ideal nesting sites if left undisturbed,. Even the smallest garden can be useful habitat. If we can do our bit to help hedgehogs maybe we will be able to reverse this drastic decline, it is feared there are less than million left now. The hedgehog has been around for 15 million years, is a uniquely beautiful and inoffensive animal but in the next 20 years we could see it’s extinction!!

Are you a small business owner? Have you ever considered creating a SIPP to purchase your business property? A SIPP is a Self Invested Personal Pension which allows the individual to be more involved in the type of investment and provides a wider choice of investment to save for retirement. What can go into a SIPP? The SIPP can be used to invest in; private equities, commodities, hedge funds and property. The investment can be diversified and split between different types of investment and what type of investment will ultimately come down to how much risk the individual is willing to take. This is something that should be considered with your Independent Financial Advisor and reviewed frequently. The purpose of this article is to focus on the commercial property investment. Commercial Property A SIPP can be used to purchase commercial property. This can be particularly beneficial to you if you are self employed and are able to use your SIPP to purchase your business premises. If you are already the owner of the business premises, then you could transfer the property into the SIPP and create a lease from the SIPP to your business. The business, via the lease, will pay for the outgoings for the commercial use of the premises such as the business rates and utilities. The rent payable by the business to the SIPP will be an allowable business expense so it reduces the tax you pay on profits generated by the business.
In addition, the rent paid by the business goes into the SIPP, less any loan repayments that have been taken to acquire the property, is then pooled into the SIPP fund and generally grows free from income tax and capital gains tax. How can we help? Rudlings Wakelam would be delighted to assist you in acquiring or transferring your property into your SIPP. As your solicitor, we will carry out the various checks on the property which you wish to be transferred into the SIPP, looking at all aspects of the title, carrying out the usual searches against the property to ensure; that the property has the correct planning permission, that there are no environmental issues affecting the property, that the property has full means of access and all necessary rights required for the use of the property for the particular business to which the property is being let. As part of the process we will prepare the commercial lease between the SIPP and your business and take care of all of the Land Registry requirements. If you are considering your options with regards to your investment, then potentially buying a commercial property through your SIPP may be something you are willing to consider. You should take advice from your independent financial adviser in relation to this and we would be delighted to act in respect of the legal services that you will require to purchase the property as highlighted above. Should you require any further advice, please feel free to contact our Steven McGrath at Rudlings Wakelam on 01842 754151, or via email at steven.mcgrath@rudlings-wakelam.co.uk.

R
emember the last few days before your GCSE results came out, or the morning before your driving test? It was nerve racking wasn’t it? Well, multiply that feeling by a factor of 10 and you get close to how many parents will be feeling about now as they anxiously await the allocation of primary school places.
educational needs, a sibling or two, and a postcode that fits, and you have a decent chance of getting your first choice. If you are lacking any of those, and you’re hoping to get into an ‘outstanding’ school, then you will be biting your ever shortening nails until after the Easter bunny has visited.
The days of dedicated catchment areas dictating where your child goes has long gone. Now, pretty much anyone can apply to send their kids to anywhere– freedom of choice and all that. Brilliant, what can possibly be wrong with that? Well, generally I think it works ok, but ask anyone who lives next door to a school to which they cannot get into, and they may disagree.
For those of you who think this isn’t such a big deal, ‘a school is a school, right?’. Well, imagine you were waiting on a job application. One with a 7 year contract. If you get it you’ll have a 5 min walk each way to a place you know and love, but if you don’t then you’ll be stuck with horrendous rush hour traffic and logistical nightmares every day… for 7 years. I can promise you, it is more than a big deal – it’s literally life changing for some families.
I don’t know what the magic formula is, and I’m not sure anyone does. However, throw in some special

closures, expanding primary schools, new high schools and you have yourself a stressful soup with a large side order of nerve racking bread. The parents’ job, as usual, is to soak all this up leaving your child worry free, blissfully unware of how their life is being planned out before them by mysterious algorithms and strangers, who we will never see. So, on the 16th April, if you see any distressed parents, who look as if they have just lost a winning lottery ticket, being comforted by their young children, be gentle with them. Definitely don’t say anything like “well at least they got into a school – they are all really good aren’t they?”. I would suggest you walk on by and let them come to terms with the allocations. This is one of many aspects of life no amount of outstanding teaching can prepare you for, regardless of where you went to school.

ANYONE FOR CROQUET? Tucked away at the far end of Victory Ground a merry band of croquet players can often be seen. In summer they play on the three lawns in white, and on bright winter days hardy souls can be seen playing on the artificial green clad in coats, hats, gloves and scarves.
There are two forms of croquet – Association Croquet, which is a longer more skilful game, and Golf Croquet. Many players start off playing golf croquet. It takes all of five minutes to learn the basics of the game, a short practice with a mallet and a ball, and then play can begin. Established members play happily with newcomers to help them learn the finer points of the game. Briefly – There are four coloured balls, the blue and black competing against the red and yellow. In doubles, where four people play, the object is to help and support your partner, whilst doing your best to thwart the aspirations of the opposition, who also want to go through the same hoop. Each player in turn strikes their ball with a mallet, the aim being to get a ball from your side through a hoop before the opponents and thus claim the point for that hoop. Once a hoop has been claimed, everyone moves on to attack the next hoop. The first side to claim seven points wins the game.
Golf Croquet is suitable for the young and the not so young – we have several members in their 80’s as well as those very much younger. You don’t have to run about as in football, jump around as in tennis, or bend down as in bowling. You only need to be mobile – and friendly. The website BURY ST EDMUNDS CROQUET CLUB gives more details about the game and the club. Should the idea of giving this game a try appeal to you, there are “taster sessions” followed by the option of three further visits before you decide to join the club.
Anyone interested should contact Chris Howell on 01284 787728 for details of times of the introductory sessions, and to book a place. 58 | APRIL 2015

When Exams are a Good Thing
Simon Head
Too much significance is lent to the taking of measurements in schools. Assessment is readily offered as proof of quality, when the very vehicles of appraisal can diminish the quality of experience for both those sitting and administering the tests. So much of what is integral to a good education is ineffable. The folly of only tracking what fits into a spreadsheet is a dangerous one: it ignores much more than it follows. Nevertheless, there is a role for testing in schools, and it is well exemplified by the diversity of entrance tests for senior schools. These tests are daunting in that they are the gateway to advancement, but they are important for other reasons too. Each senior school does something different. When you apply to a school at scholarship level the complexities proliferate, but so do the templates. This means that a particular child can be tested more against their particular strengths, rather than their weaknesses. A standardised 13+ test is clipboard friendly in that it provides every candidate with the same straitjacket. By offering something more bespoke, you encourage greater success. Uppingham offers an all-rounder award with an emphasis on leadership and the capacity to contribute to school life. This was perfect for one of our children who - exceptional as she is - might not have enjoyed success in a narrower field. Equally, another of our candidates excelled in the assessment offered by Thetford Grammar school which focused specifically on his musical talent. None of these examinations are flimsy or brittle. Personal interview formed a significant part of both the Sports scholarship assessment at Framlingham, and the rigorous Academic one at the Perse. Preparing children for these demanding and differing examinations is a challenge, but a worthy one. garden confidential BY PAUL CLARKE
PAULS PLANT OF THE MONTH Commonly known as Bleeding Heart. The rosepink, heart-shaped flowers appear in late spring above fern-like, fresh green leaves. A late spring flowering Spring plant which is happy in any good garden soil that is fertile but not too heavy. Fairly easy to grow as long as the ground is kept moist, it will thrive in full sun or partial shade. You can help provide the right conditions by applying a mulch or leaf mould.
Lamprocapnos spectabilis What to do in your garden in April
This months poem... 62 | APRIL 2015
Spring has arrived and it is arguably the best time of the year in the garden. With the warmer weather and longer days the tulips, daffodils , camellias, magnolias and azaleas are now in full bloom. However the saying April is half March and half May is very true and reminds us that we need to have a little caution before putting out tender bedding plants as frosty mornings are still possible. “In the glow of the dawn, Welcome a new day, Greet the golden sunlight or rain, Nature in all its subtlety. Whip of the wind, Earth unfolds, Softly falling rain, Growing plants and buds blossoming. Visions of the earth, with glories of nature, Beauty of the daffodils, Sunshine and rain from a rainbow, Awe! Nature in full bloom. BLANCHE BLACK, Springtime

pauls jobs for the month General Maintenance • Keep the hoe going before perennial weeds establish and self seed • Water newly planted trees and shrubs if we have any dry spells • Add lawn clippings to the compost heap
Lawn Maintenance • With the mild winter, moss has flourished in our lawns. There are two choices with moss, if you don’t like using chemicals use a wire rake to remove. Otherwise use a granular weed and feed product to tackle the moss. • Don’t leave bare patches in your lawn as this will soon be filled by weeds. Instead apply some grass seed.
• Now is the time to give Lavatera a hard prune • Plant summer flowering bulbs including lilies and gladioli • Sow sunflower seeds directly into the soil at the end of April • Divide and replant hostas. Dig up large clumps with a spade and use an old serrated kitchen knife to separate out new plants and replant. • Deadhead camellias as they turn brown to keep the plant looking its best • Cut back old peony stems • Pinch out the growing tips of new shoots on fuchsias as this will help create a more bushy plant
• Evergreens, such as rosemary, lavender, bay, • Tidy and reshape lawn edges sage and thyme, can be with a half moon edger. pruned as soon as the winter is over.
Flower Garden
• Prune forsythia after flowering to keep the shrubs to a manageable size and height

sprouts, early peas, beetroot, radish, turnips and spinach, carrots and onions. The difficulty is making the choice! To avoid build up of pests and diseases try to avoid growing the same crop in the same part of the garden each year so rotate. • Plant first early potatoes. They like lots of sunshine and lots of water. • You can now plant asparagus crowns. • If you have space plant an area with strawberries this month. Fork in plenty of well rotted manure as you can. Plant strawberries with their crowns slightly above the ground 12inches apart and 18 inches between rows • It is a good idea to mulch around fruit trees and bushes in April, provided the ground is not bone dry when you do it. Use well-rotted manure or garden compost and spread it liberally round all fruit trees • Pick rhubarb that has been growing away under forcers.

ALTERNATIVE CHOICE Pop Star Word Search TO A SANDWICH If one of your new year’s resolutions was to eat healthier or if you’re just bored of sandwiches, here’s a tip for you. When you make your school packed lunch or for work, you could have a salad, couscous, pasta or some rice instead of a sandwich. All of these foods are healthy and are very yummy! They are also quick and easy to make. My personal favourite for the pasta is squirting some tomato puree and mixed herbs into the pasta. Try grating some cheese on top which makes it even tastier!

Fun with nails!
As it’s the Easter Holidays and there is no school, now is the time to experiment with nail varnish and nail art. Why not jazz it up a little? I am sure many of you enjoy painting your nails but can’t do it because you are not allowed to wear it to school, well if so, this is the time to do so! How about trying some nice bright Spring colours like: yellow, light blue, Pink and a vibrant orange to make it stand out. If you just want a nice simple look then here is what I am going to do: paint my nails mint green, then choose one finger on each hand to do a pink flower and how to do that is by getting a bobby pin or a cocktail stick, dunk it in the nail varnish and just dab it on your nails slowly and gently. Ta dah!

John O’ Groats to Lands End
Charity Cycle Ride Kieran Leggett from Stowmarket and Chris Atkin from Grimsby will both be cycling from John O’ Groats to Lands End on May the 23rd 2015 in just 12 days. The route will be the full length of the UK, some 946 miles and 34,536 ft. of ascents as well as incorporating a climb of Ben Nevis to add an extra challenge to this classic route.
They are looking to raise as much money as possible for a charity local to Suffolk - AJ’s legacy. The charity was set up in 2011 by the parents of Aiden Jones of Stowmarket who was tragically killed by a drink driver in 2009. The charity aims to help young people with special needs in Stowmarket and the surrounding areas as well as supporting as many good causes as feasible. Their purpose is to raise awareness and promote sustainability of AJ’s legacy and encourage giving to smaller local charities that are often forgotten but have a significant impact on people living and working in our communities. They have a facebook page that highlights the event in more detail:

Greene King IPA Rugby Sevens at Bury set for its 7th Year The date is now set for the annual Greene King IPA Sevens tournament at Bury St Edmunds RUFC and big crowds are predicted as interest mounts around Six Nations and World Cup fever. Hosted for its seventh year at the Greene King IPA Haberden ground, the tournament will once again be packed with top name clubs and international sides competing. Already signed up to play are premiership sides Northampton Saints, Sale Sharks and Worcester Warriors as well as national Sevens teams from Ireland, Nigeria and Wales. The tournament, which is sponsored by Bury-based brewer Greene King IPA, will be held on Sunday 3rd May 2015 and will feature up to sixteen teams within its elite competition, an eight side Open competition for local teams including a Bury side comprising several of Bury’s 1st team players; and a six team Women’s 7s tournament. Last year’s winners Northampton Saints will be returning to defend their title and battle for a slice of the £7000 prize money “This will be our seventh year of hosting the Greene King IPA 7s and during that relatively short time it has developed a reputation as one of the premier Sevens tournaments on the circuit attracting some of the best 7s teams in the world”, said Michael Robinson, Bury St Edmunds RUFC’s Club Chairman. “2015 will be a phenomenal year for rugby with the World Cup being played on British soil and interest in the sport at an all time high. 7s rugby has even higher fast paced action and thrills and spills than the full fifteen game, which is why it makes such as great spectator sport. Last year we had in excess of 2500 spectators join us for this 78 | APRIL 2015

ne of the most intriguing aspects of the Easter story is how a totally distraught woman, Mary Magdalene, goes to the tomb early in the morning with no expectation that anything wonderful or comforting could possibly take place. She was so distracted by her grief that while she had brought items to prepare the body properly for permanent entombment she hadn’t given a thought about who was going to move the tombstone. The empty tomb, the sight of angels, the encounter with somebody who she presumed was a gardener, and then finally the joy of the realisation that the man she loved, Jesus, had risen from the dead was something so wonderful she could not but tell people about it.
82 | APRIL 2015
This year of 2015 has begun very badly for so many people around the world. There are ongoing wars in the Ukraine, Syria, Iraq, the Turkish border, Nigeria and the surrounding states. There are international calamities caused by storms and there is still economic paralysis in the west, huge debt burdens for nations and, of course, large amounts of indebtedness for individuals as well. We all walk in the fear of terrorism and closer to home there are real concerns about house prices, education and the health service. Despite the Bishops’ fiftytwo page letter on the general election, none of us is approaching 7th May with any real expectation other than a hung parliament and yet more political wrangling.
MORETON HALL Whatever happened to the nation that produced such high quality leaders in the past; whatever happened to the clear vision for the future and the integrity and the ability to deliver it. We have a same sense of grief and low expectation that Mary had on that Easter morning. I cannot promise you an electoral or economic miracle. Certainly, like so many people, I am really not sure who to vote for or even if my vote would make any difference at all. But I believe in the resurrection and I believe that God ‘... is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine...’ (Eph. 3: 20), because throughout my life, just when things were at their very darkest, God has always done something spectacular or wonderful. Or at least, has always brought me through it. I know that prayer and faith can change every situation out of all recognition. Therefore I would call on each and every one of you actually to give some time to prayer for our general election, our political leaders and our nation. Ask God to help us begin to live, work, pray and believe as we should and I am sure that He will begin to do something beyond all expectation.

We need to be much more grateful for all the positive institutions we have in our country. When we see the devastation visited on the Pacific Islands of Vanuatu, we realise just how lucky we are. A sense of gratitude and a desire to live up to the standards we had in the past rather than denigrate what we have got , would help improve things in the nation beyond all recognition.

But we also learned that Shaw has a brother, Ian (Jason Statham). Now he comes gunning for Dominic (Vin Diesel), Brian (Paul Walker), Luke (Dwayne Johnson) and the rest of the gang in this jaw-droppingly stuntpacked sequel. Among the action set-pieces are an amazing parachuting car sequence and a breathtaking assault on an armoured truck! The moreton hall community centre Hello all, welcome to the April update from the Moreton Hall Community Centre and Club! Hi all and welcome to the April edition of the Moreton Hall Directory! Hope you are all enjoying whatever Easter Holiday you’ve managed to get, either way, as the weather gets fairer you’ll get a warm welcome at the community centre! We’re gearing up for summer here at the club, with lots of events to keep you entertained as well to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Club. The first of which worth mentioning is of course our year-long offer of every 30th of the month seeing us lower the member’s prices of drinks! What that means is, instead of 13.5% off, you will receive a brilliant 30% off all drinks as a member of the club – well worth it! In April we’re continuing our popular Tuesday Night bingo, always worth coming down as the jackpots can get rather sizeable! It starts from 8pm and all are welcome. And then on Saturday 11th April we have Saturday Night Bingo in the clubroom. As ever, goodies up for grabs for the first few games, and then onto the serious business of playing for cash! It starts at 8pm, and of course the more people come down the more cash there is to be won! At the club we’ve introduced a quiz night every Wednesday, hosted by Loopy Lou. We will be serving our hot food menu on this week night from 7pm until 8:30pm, so if you fancy testing your knowledge (for cash, we might add!) and having a spot of lovely, homemade food, come on down to the Moreton Hall Club every Wednesday night! It’s £2 to enter per person. In June we’re going a bit retro for our Saturday Night Offers, with an 80’s themed quiz on Saturday 13th June starting at 8pm. And then on the
27th June, back by popular demand is Phil the Rhythm hosting an 80’s disco (fancy dress optional but very much encouraged!) This is all to celebrate 30 years of the club – the Moreton Hall Club has been around since 1985, if you can believe it, and the Community Centre has stood for 15 years. To all who have helped make it the success it is and continues to be, well done and thank you. If you’re looking for the perfect place to watch the football season wind down, come down to the club to watch the highlights as they happen on our big screen! We show all matches on terrestrial, BT Sports and Sky Sports on our big screen, and if you’re a member you can participate in our loyalty scheme that sees you getting a stamp for each drink you buy during the match – 20 stamps, and a free drink is yours! Just one of the reasons being a member of the (long established) Moreton Hall Club is a win all the way… Of course this means that the FA Cup final on 30th May will be shown on the big screen, which as in previous years is a day full of atmosphere! Be sure to get down early to claim your spot! We’ll also be holding a football quiz in honour of the prestigious event £1 per person to enter, with cash prizes up for grabs – the quiz will start soon after the football. We’ve got a few big events that we’re excited about at the Centre, the first of which is the Moreton Hall darts open on Saturday 9th May. This is the 5th year running and it continues to go from strength to strength, with the top prize this year being £1,000, thanks in part to our main
news
sponsors, Greene King. If you’re looking for a day full of atmosphere and top darts, then come down – it starts from 9am and lasts all day, with lots of hot, fresh food available throughout. Next up is our first Moreton Hall Beer Festival at the centre, which will see great local breweries showcasing their ales and ciders to a thirsty crowd! This is on 20th and 21st June, happily coinciding with Father’s Day, and will run all day till thirsts are quenched - you can even buy a commemorative Moreton Hall glass! For more details on joining in or attending, please contact us on 01284 763402. And finally, we have already laid plans for one of our bigger events, which is the Annual Funday, taking place this year on Sunday 26th July. This is a day full of rides and stalls for all the family, including a climbing wall, inflatable obstacle course, gladiator platforms and much, much more, too much to mention in one editorial! It is free for all to get in and absolutely everyone is welcome, so make sure you save the date as it is always a fantastic day. Lots on in the coming months, good weather to look forward to (fingers crossed), great deals, offers, and a very warm welcome awaits you at both the centre and the club. With that said, we look forward to welcoming you soon!
