EDITOR’S LETTER
Welcome to the APRIL ISSUE
We hope everyone is looking forward to restrictions being lifted gradually. We are eagerly awaiting the beer gardens to open soon! But holidays are still a little in limbo so it maybe Costa Del Bury again for the summer. So with that in mind, on pages 62-63 we have a few good buys for the garden. Hopefully cinemas will be back open again in May, so in the meantime Netflix is still a must have for April, on pages 58-59 we have some good films to watch, if unlike us girls in the office, you’re not into a boxset binge! With Easter coming up we have a couple of recipes to try too on pages 38 and 40. As always, stay safe, many of us are still awaiting the first vaccine, so we’re not out of the woods just yet. Have a lovely Easter Bank GEMMA PROCTER, editor Holiday and see you all in May!

Moreton Hall Highways The County Council issue continuing to dominate is the increased number of HGV’s legally using Orttewell Road and also the increasing numbers on Bedingfeld Way. As the County Council refused to act, I complained formally but they rejected it. I escalated it to the Local Government Ombudsman but they have declined to investigate because I, as a resident, am not badly affected. As the law prevents the LGO investigating complaints from a councillor on behalf of the community, local residents who are immediately affected have also submitted complaints. Hopefully the message will get through. Many thanks to residents of Moreton Hall and the Southgate ward who have responded to the Directory article and to the local leaflets, with a very big majority supporting the need for control. It’s worth remembering that the Eastern Relief Road was constructed and Junction 45 (Rougham) restructured at huge expense to provide access to Suffolk Park and yet the county council are content for alternatives to be used. The cabinet councillor for highways even states that he would expect some traffic from the west to use Bedingfeld Way as that is the shortest route. It certainly isn’t the easiest route and in normal times, results in even more congestion at J44 (Sainsburys). HGV’s have always used Bedingfeld Way to deliver to the retail park and that is widely accepted but it should not be a route to the massive warehouse and distribution businesses at Suffolk Park. Local residents have been in contact with several and they agree that J45 is the route that should be used. Following leaflets to houses bordering Bedingfeld Way, the majority of residents who responded want more control. It’s so frustrating that this could be resolved if the county council could bring themselves to agree with the obvious. We will not give up and in the meantime, I have asked Highways England, responsible for the A14, if direction signs to Suffolk Park via Junction 45 can be installed.
City Fibre The contractor working for City Fibre, that spent most of last year installing fibre on Moreton Hall, has been replaced with a new company to complete the installation. I am assured the estate will be completed by the end of April but will continue to report any problems to the county council as it’s essential everything is logged to ensure remedial action is taken. Please let me know if you see anything that needs putting right.

So many of you have donated to our Help your NHS hospital Covid appeal over the past twelve months but, as we support over 100 areas of the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, it’s been amazing that some of you have continued to say thank you to different areas of the hospital. Molly and Jack Deal have turned their tragedy into helping others. The couple sadly lost their daughter when she was born at just 16 weeks and six days on New Year’s Eve. They decided to take on a challenge of cycling from Bury St Edmunds to our twin town of Compiegne in France on their static bike, a distance of around 300 miles, to say thank you to the teams who cared for them. As we write this they are already at over £4,000 which will benefit both the bereavement suite and the gynaecological ward, F14, who plan to use some of the money to provide some keepsakes for their patients. My WiSH Charity provided West Suffolk Hospital with the bereavement suite back in 2016. This large room is big enough for the whole family to be together and has its own bathroom and kitchenette. We also provided a cuddle cot which allows families to keep their baby with them longer enjoying precious time all together. If you would like to donate to Molly and Jack, you can do so at www.justgiving. com/jack-deal5.
And it’s not always money that people donate. Nine year old Harry Tarpley donated time and paint! He had seen the hospital gnomes were looking a little tired and so invited for them a little holiday! The result was a wonderful makeover complete with NHS rainbows. Don’t they look amazing, they certainly brighten up one of the courtyards. If you’re heading down to the pathology lab for a blood test, do keep an eye out for them.
My WiSH Charity Soapbox Challenge We are hoping to announce in April that our My WiSH Charity Soapbox Challenge will be able to go ahead on Saturday 4th September. Do keep an eye on our social media pages and on our website for more details.

https://moretonhallresidents.wordpress.com/contact The Public Space Protection Space Protection Order for Moreton Hall is recommended for approval by West Suffolk Council and goes before the West Suffolk Cabinet on the 16th March. It covers the whole of Moreton Hall Ward including the area of the business parks where previously racing used to take place. Thursday 6th May is local election day. The following elections are taking place. The whole of Suffolk County Council is up for re-election. Moreton Hall is part of Eastgate and Moreton Hall Division on Suffolk County Council. A by election for Moreton Hall Ward on West Suffolk Council The Suffolk Police and Crime Commissioner election. The underpass project has taken a major step forward. A brief was prepared and bids received. A final decision will be made mid-April. Our thanks to Ellie and Della of Families and Communities at West Suffolk Council for their help in getting this arts project off the ground. It will be community led with input from all ages from right across Moreton Hall. Watch this space for more information in May/June. We are lucky on Moreton Hall. We have many wonderful walks and many footpaths. We also have combined pedestrian and cycle paths. These are clearly defined. However, there are some narrow paths where cyclists and pedestrians share space, the path leading from the underpass up to by Abbotts Green being a case in point. It is difficult to observe social distancing, and sometimes, if hard of hearing or elderly to avoid speeding cycles. Please show consideration for other users both pedestrians and cyclists. 18 | APRIL 2021

Back to school It’s good to see our children back in school, hopefully things remain and there is no repeat of Septembers outbreak. The children need their education and interaction with their peer groups. Teachers have their hands full and I am sure they will cope admirably, best of luck to all having to catch up on lessons and getting ready for exams, just do the best you can.
Drugs In the news recently it has been highlighted that County lines gangs are using children as young as 7 and 8 years of age to deliver drugs, they reportably give the children chocolates and sweets and some of these sweets are laced with drugs and the children get hooked and are easier to control. It’s a very sad affair and the police are working hard to stop it, the police recently arrested two gangs in suffolk and took drugs and dealers off the streets, well done them. Please be vigilent and report any events that you feel are drug related.
Industrial Estate While walking around the Industrial Estate, what a mess some of the firms area’s are in, old mattresses dumped between buildings, skips overflowing, rubbish blowing all over the place. There were some sites which were clean and tidy, one site in particular was Sealey’s, not one bit of rubbish or waste, grass trimmed and even the roundabout outside the site was cleaned and tidy, well done them. It would be nice if others followed their example. That’s it for now, take care and I hope you are all getting your vaccination go for it, you know it’s good for you Frank Warby, Moreton Hall Resident 20 | APRIL 2021

T W BUILDING HERITAGE One of our recent renovation projects... Here at T W Building Heritage we have recently been busy renovating a 6 bedroom early Victorian property in Clapham, London. The work started with removing all failed areas of lime mortar, including all 2nd floor ceilings, all internal sides of the external walls and then reinstated in Lime mortar. Once we had completed the first phase we then went on to repairing the flat roof on the leanto extension, we did this by Ashfelting.
TW BUILDING HERITAGE
The second phase was the decoration, all the rooms were decorated in Farrow and Ball chalk based paint including a satin wood on all the wood work. We rebuilt a section of the front wall and rendered in lime mortar. On all renovation projects we look to try and expose as many original features as possible for the clients, we did so by repairing the decorative Cornice in two rooms. We have also uncovered a mosaic entrance which has not seen the light of day in decades and this most definately impressed the client. All in all, it was a fantastic project to work on and everyone involved was really happy with the result!
If you have a project that needs our help, then give us a call to discuss further!

DEAD WOOD IN MORETON HALL
W
D
ead wood is an important microhabitat. There’s a saying about oak trees; they take 200 years to grow, 200 years to live and 200 years to die’. So for one-third of their lives there is dead wood in the tree and falling on the floor. A huge number of species have evolved to utilise all the energy in the dead wood. Fungi slowly rot the wood away, using its cellulose and lignin to power its growth. All sorts of invertebrates, from worms, beetles and flies, especially in the larval stage, eat the fungal threads within the dead wood or the fungal fruiting bodies (toadstools, brackets’). Woodpeckers
drill into dead wood to find and eat these creatures, and make holes in dead wood for their nests. Holes, cracks and loose bark on dead branches provide a home for spiders and bats. Dead wood really is an ecosystem in itself. The size and location of dead wood is important too. Bigger bits last longer, so provide a home for longer and the bigger it is the more species it can support. Dead wood on the ground often supports more species when it is shaded, and so damp. When the wood is damp, fungi can operate better and more insects can
use the fungus or burrow in the wood itself. Dead branches in the canopy of trees are more likely to support bats and specialist insects that can cope with hard sun-dried wood. In our woods, dead branches high-up, especially where they might fall on a path, might be a risk to people in the wood. West Suffolk Council, which is responsible for tree safety in the woods which Woodland Ways manages, regularly inspects and manages the dangerous trees. If you see pink marks on trees, or hear chainsaws in the woods, Council staff are doing what is necessary to keep us safe.

Garden Confidential
What to do in your garden this March... Gardening has become more and more popular over the last year during the Covid 19 Pandemic. Our gardens provide us with a little sanctuary from the difficulties of the world around us and this peace of mind is good for both mind and body. Growing your own fruit and vegetables has never been more popular so it’s well worth spending a little time this month considering what you would like to grow or perhaps building a compost bin. I recently read an article that indicated “Front gardens are getting greener as plant-loving Britons break with the trend for paving and gravel”. Twice as many people now say the area in front of their home is entirely planted up, compared with five years ago, according to a poll for the Royal Horticultural Society. Think on and do your bit for the environment.
jobs for the month General Maintenance l Dig out perennial weeds before they establish and self seed l Fill up the bird feeders l Add lawn clippings to the compost heap l Pond algae grow when there is excessive sun light. Create extra shade by dividing and replanting water lilies l Dig out patio weeds
l Direct sow annuals such as nigella, cosmos and Californian poppies in any gaps you have in the beds l Deadhead daffodil and tulip flowers, nipping off the heads and seed pod as they fade but let foliage die back naturally. l Sow a row of sunflowers l Divide and replant hostas. Dig up large clumps with a spade and use an old serrated kitchen knife to separate out new plants and replant. l Prune forsythia after flowering l Feed container plants with pelleted chicken manure
Lawn Maintenance l With the mild winter, moss has flourished in our lawns. If you don’t like using chemicals use a wire rake or an electric scarifier to remove. l Tidy and reshape lawn edges with a half moon edger. Create a gully of around 8cm between lawn and flower border.
Flower Garden l Roses will be putting on a lot of growth and a t tonic such as Sulphur Rose will help to ward off blackspot and mildew. A handful of slow-release organic blood, fish and bone spread evenly about the roots will set up the health of your plants.
l Plant sweet peas outside l Prune penstemons hard back to the new growth at the base
Vegetable and Fruit Garden l As soon as the ground reaches 6C you can start to sow broad beans, brussel sprouts, early peas, beetroot, radish, turnips and spinach, carrots and onions. The difficulty is making the choice! l Plant first early potatoes. They like lots of sunshine and lots of water. l Plant onion sets if the soil is dry l Pick rhubarb that has been growing away under forcers.

MORETON HALL NEWS... from Peter Thompson, Mayor
Email: peter.thompson@westsuffolk.gov.uk Mobile: 07810 868986
PSPO OK! I’m pleased to report that the PSPO for Moreton Hall and surrounding area has been granted by Cabinet at WSC. In a nutshell, this specifies our area as protected for anti-social behaviour related to motor vehicles. You will know that I’ve been dealing with these complaints for years and this has given the police wider powers to enable them to deal with activities such as the dangerous racing (pictured) that we saw a couple of summers ago, group gatherings or loud exhausts.
Spring Forward
Alas, Bob the Snowman is no more... But, you will know me as a very positive person and as you read this we are taking our first tentative steps forwards out of the Covid crisis we’ve all shared. The 12th of this month sees pubs reopen if they have a beer garden and can serve safely. You will likely find me in the Moreton Hall Pub’s garden that day, rain or shine! In all seriousness, it is so good to see some normality returning. I can report that we have, as a community, pulled together amazingly well through the pandemic. Whilst one tragedy alone is one too many, we can take some solice in the fact that due to everyone’s diligence we have managed to contain the virus relatively effectively and I saw some figures showing up to 45 times lower rates than other comparable towns around Suffolk. Thoughts with those that have been affected and let’s bounce back stronger.
Rich in Spirit
The selflessness of others continues. I’d just like to throw out a thank you to Richard Savory, who has been giving his time up during lockdown to keep our little ones active. He put on free football and fitness sessions for a range of ages which could be done in your living room and it grew form just a few to almost 30 participants. Thanks Richard!

Beat It! Hub is Go I’ve spoke about the Volunteer Hub (see what I did there!) in previous articles and I’m pleased to report some new progress. You may have received some comms on it during Feb and March through your door. We are now seeking those who not only wish to volunteer for some of our upcoming projects, but also people who would like to add to the trustees and run the charity itself. I am also forming a standing, almost on-call, team (temporarily called Beat It!) which would be able to be requested as a clean up crew for litter, fly tipping and clear up and cutting back jobs within the hub. If you’d like to get involved, we’re on bsevolunteerhub@gmail.com.

With the virus still very much with us and touching so many of our lives, CPSG have taken the decision to further postpone meetings. To keep members safe and with the vaccine programme well under way, we sincerely hope that by September we will be able to hold a meeting with lesser restrictions. With the roadmap in place and case numbers declining in most areas we look forward with optimism that we can come together as a group, gathering together indoors. At this time there is no guarantee of speakers however we endeavour to make meetings enjoyable to attend and then look to 2022 to have a more varied programme. A venue for coffee mornings has yet to be sought which we will hopefully be able to do in the autumn. Positively Crafty sessions may start in October. Keeping in touch via zoom and other sources has been a real lifeline for members. The longer lighter days of the Springtime are very much welcomed with the new life in the gardens and the fields to focus our attention. Getting outdoors in the natural light has enormous benefits. Being mindful in the moment not thinking too far ahead and reflecting on what matters. No matter how small, accomplish something each day that gives a sense of satisfaction. As you step forward do something for you that makes you happy and to help you look forward to life again. Choose happiness over habit, not just because it’s a habit you’ve fallen into. Enjoy the feel good moments of trying something new to improve your mood and mind, just the tonic needed to feel more alert and alive again. Increasing focus and having more energy makes the immune system stronger. Unearth your confidence, boost your self-esteem and set your intention to feeling alive again and having fun! Communication has never been so important By Hearing Care Centre Clinical Lead Audiologist, Simon Myhill RHAD FdSc FSHAA
A big part of communication is being able to hear well and to contribute to conversation whether it is one to one or in wider groups. Being asked to stay away from friends and family has been tough on us all and we have all come to understand the value of phone calls, video calls and social media. Even though we have spent less time with our loved ones than we ever have done, the ability to communicate well in those limited opportunities has been increasingly important. However, now that vaccines are more prevalent and there is the promise of restrictions easing, we can see the light at the end of the tunnel. We all look forward to socialising once again with loved ones in gardens, homes, pubs and restaurants. We might even be able to attend a live entertainment event with a crowd before the end of the year. This of course means that the
challenges to communicating in those demanding listening situations will make a return as the world around us gets nosier again and I want people to be ready to enjoy life to the fullest once we are able to again. If you have noticed a deterioration with your hearing, then we recommend in the first instance having a simple hearing check. For most people hearing loss is a very gradual process and it can be other people who begin to point it out first. Lockdown has also heightened our awareness of these issues. For example, we’ve watched more TV than we ever have done, at times it can be noticeable when one member of the household prefers the volume up louder than the rest! The good news is we can help with an initial assessment to establish whether there is a problem with your hearing or whether it could be something as simple as blocked ears.
To book an appointment for a hearing assessment please call 01473 230330. You can find us locally at the Bury Natural Health Centre, Park Farm Business Centre, Fornham St Genevieve. For more information visit www.hearingcarecentre.co.uk 34 | APRIL 2021

Spring Clean
HEALTH & BEAUTY
your mind & body
As we wave goodbye to the cold, damp, dark days of winter, here are some ways to give your health a seasonal makeover this spring.
Get sleep ready
The beginning of British Summer Time is a key culprit in sleep disruption. Minimise the impact by moving your bedtime earlier just by 10 minutes or so in the days approaching and, to aid your sleep, avoid food and alcohol near bedtime.
Eat with the season
Make the most of nutrient-packed fruit and vegetables that are in season during spring. You’ll be able to enjoy delicious offerings such as spinach, purple sprouting broccoli, radishes, watercress, asparagus and rhubarb.
Ease hayfever
Spring also heralds the start of the allergy season. “Foods rich in flavonoids such as quercetin, vitamin C and beta-carotene can help to block histamine and reduce inflammation, these include garlic, onions and blueberries. Carrots are also good for giving your immunity a boost. Regularly eating local honey can also help your immune system to cope with allergens too.
Cut out mental clutter
Journaling can be a great way to get mental clutter out of your head, if you’re looking to free up more energy, try writing your cluttered thoughts on a piece of paper before ripping it all up and recycling, or writing in pen on toilet paper and literally flushing away the mental mess. 36 | APRIL 2021
Show your gut some love
Seasonal bugs and antibiotic-requiring winter infections may well have left your gut in need of support. Replenish friendly gut bacteria with a good-quality probiotic containing the most widely researched bacteria strains, lactobacillus and bifidobacterium. Your gut bacteria also appears to play a key role in maintaining a healthy immune system so include live bacteria in your diet with yoghurt and fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kefir and kombucha.
Focus on fitness
Feel more energised as the weather starts to warm up by heading outdoors to work out. Harness the fat-burning, fitness-boosting benefits of highintensity interval training simply by walk/running between lamp posts. Start with short, 20-minute sessions and build up to 30 minutes. You can also increase endurance by going longer or pushing yourself to run faster if weight loss is your goal.
Get fired up for action
If you have health, fitness or wellbeing goals this spring, having a visual reminder of your aim is key. Vision boards can be great for motivation, but it’s vital to have them in a prominent place where you’ll be regularly inspired. Take a photo of your board and use it as a screensaver on your phone. A mood box can be another way to get all your senses on board, including music that will motivate you.

Vitamin D supports healthy bones and immunity and is made by the action of sun on our skin, so our levels can drop quite significantly during winter. As we come into spring, many of us are low in vitamin D as it’s quite difficult to get enough from our diet alone so try to keep levels topped up with a supplement during the spring months.
Get sun savvy
Sunscreen is not just for summer, it helps protect your skin in spring too. When choosing a sunscreen, look for a high sun-protection factor (30 SPF or more) to protect against UVB, the UVA circle logo and/or four or five UVA stars to protect against UVA. Ensure you apply plenty of sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before going out into the sun, and reapply every two hours and after swimming.

INGREDIENTS:
METHOD:
275ml milk, warm (not hot)
Put the warm milk, yeast and sugar in a large mixing bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer, stir to dissolve the yeast and sugar, cover with a clean tea towel and set aside for 15 minutes for the yeast to activate (the mix will go a bit frothy).
7g fast-action dried yeast 2 tbsp caster sugar 325g strong white bread flour 300g plain flour, plus extra to dust 1 tsp fine salt ¼ tsp freshly grated nutmeg ½-1 tsp hot chilli powder ¼ tsp sweet smoked paprika ¼ tsp garlic powder ½ tsp nigella seeds 3 medium free-range eggs (2 beaten together, plus 1 beaten separately for the glaze) 45g butter, softened 100g extra mature cheddar, finely crumbled 1-2 red chillies, deseeded and finely chopped For the cross topping 50g plain flour 50g icing sugar ¼ tsp sweet smoked paprika 2½ tbsp milk 1 tbsp vegetable oil You’ll also need Baking sheet lined with compostable baking paper Piping bag fitted with a 5mm plain nozzle Useful to have a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook
Add the flours, salt, spices and the 2 beaten eggs to the yeast mixture, then bring together with a wooden spoon or mix on a low speed until the mixture begins to come together into a slightly sticky dough. If making by hand, turn out the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead in the butter, piece by piece, until combined. If making in a stand mixer, turn up to medium and add the butter in the same way. Either way, knead for 5-10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic. Add the cheese and chillies, then knead until evenly incorporated. Lightly grease the bowl, return the dough to it, cover with a clean tea towel and leave to rise at room temperature for 1-2 hours until doubled in size. Turn out the dough onto the work surface and divide into 12 even pieces. Shape into buns and set 2cm apart on the prepared baking sheet so they have space to expand. Cover with a clean tea towel and leave to prove (rise a second time once shaped) at room temperature for about 1 hour. Heat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan/gas 6. Put all the ingredients for the cross topping in a mixing bowl, whisk until smooth and thick, then scrape into the prepared piping bag. Brush the buns with beaten egg and allow to dry. Pipe over the crosses, then brush with egg again. Put the buns in the oven, turn it down to 180°C/160°C fan/gas 4 and bake for 25-30 minutes until golden and cooked. Cool on a wire rack, then serve, fresh or toasted, with butter.

These easy Easter biscuits are an Easter treat that the whole family can make and enjoy together. Have fun with the colours and designs – they look ever so pretty decorated with pastel-coloured icing.
INGREDIENTS: 200g unsalted butter, softened 100g caster sugar 1 medium free-range egg, beaten 230g plain flour, plus extra to dust 1 tsp ground mixed spice ½ tsp freshly grated nutmeg Grated zest 1 lemon For the icing 400g icing sugar, sifted Juice 2 lemons Range of food colourings (we used pink, blue and yellow) Edible glitter (optional) You’ll also need: 5-7cm cookie cutters; piping bags with 2mm nozzles; palette knife Prep time: 20 mins Cooking time: 20 mins Serves: about 20 40 | APRIL 2021
METHOD: Heat the oven to 180°C/160°C fan/gas 4. In a large mixing bowl, use an electric hand mixer to beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in the egg, bit by bit. Sift the flour, spice and nutmeg into the bowl and add the lemon zest. Mix until smooth. Bring the dough together with your hands, shape into a disc and wrap in cling film. Chill for 30 minutes. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to a 5mm thickness. Use cookie cutter(s) to stamp out biscuits, then use a palette knife to move them to 2 baking sheets lined with non-stick baking paper. Bake for 15-20 minutes until lightly golden, then cool for 5 minutes on the tray. Transfer to a wire rack. Meanwhile make the icing. Divide the icing sugar evenly among as many bowls as you have colours, plus one for white. Stir enough lemon juice into each to make a stiff paste (use the juice from ½ lemon per 100g icing sugar). Stir a few drops of each colour into different bowls. Add a little water to the icing if it’s still too thick. This makes it easier to ice larger blocks of colour. Don’t make the white icing too runny or it’ll spread out too much when you pipe the details. Put the icing in piping bags and pipe a border around the edge of each biscuit, then fill with coloured icing. Leave to set firm, then pipe on any detail. Dust with a little glitter if you like. Leave at room temperature for 2 hours to set the icing.

HMRC Calling – No Scam Emily Haines
At a time when even HM Revenue & Customs is warning about scam phone calls, if you are newly self-employed then you might well get a call from HMRC relating to the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme grant (SEISS). We are aware of many locals driven by Covid-19 to start up their own businesses in the tax year 2019-20 to earn a crust in these difficult times. SEISS rounds four and five are now available and you may wish to make a claim. However, HMRC needs verification of your identity and proof of your self-employment status. You may already have received a letter from HMRC advising of a follow-up phone call within 10 working days. You will be called up to three times from an unknown number and you will be asked to confirm your email address. A link to a secure on-line platform will follow requiring you to upload one form of identity and three months’ worth of bank statements confirming your business activity. HMRC will then check your eligibility under the new SEISS scheme, inviting you to claim the SEISS scheme grant. The fourth grant will provide 80% of 3 months’ average trading profits capped at £7,500. If you want to find out more, please get in touch through our Whiting & Partners Skyliner Way office.

Covid-19 has made the last twelve months very tough for everybody and Moreton Hall’s many businesses are encountering fresh challenges. Some businesses will need to relaunch; some are dealing with major changes to their operations or supply chains; some may be managing a huge demand in a specific area of their company. A further complication is BREXIT. The United Kingdom is no longer part of the European Union. Local businesses that trade with the EU may be experiencing new importing and exporting regulations. Our Bury St Edmunds staff can offer help, advice and guidance through these areas.

CRICKET CLUB Photograph © April Urquhart
The cricket season remains surrounded by uncertainty but with outdoor sports permitted from Monday March 29th things look more promising. Detailed advice will follow but it is likely cricket matches will be allowed without using the changing rooms and players bringing their own food. The bar at the Victory Ground could well be open for drinks to be consumed outside from mid-April and for waiter service inside the Conservatories Direct Community Pavilion from mid-May with a likely return to normality by Monday June 21st Bury St Edmunds host a team of former England players at the Victory Ground on Friday July 23rd 4 Saturday and 2 Sunday adult teams will take part in League Cricket with a ladies softball team and junior cricket teams from aged 9 through to under 17 and 19. We are very grateful to Local Councillors Ann Williamson and Patrick Chung for providing Locality Funding to purchase a practice cage and new cover for the 2nd pitch (see photographs) this is a great boost to the club. Junior cricket is being lead by James Sturgeon and Alfie Marston both Premier League players with the support of John Williams. The junior section sponsored by Harvey Frost play multiple matches against other clubs in the County in both soft and hardball formats with a variety of rules/guides designed to develop and test their cricket skills. Women and girls softball training and matches play a key role in the club, training on a Friday evening and friendlies against other local softball teams. Playing cricket is a great way to socialise whilst engaging in a fairly relaxed form of exercise. After a year of relative sporting inactivity why not try cricket! The summer coaching programme includes: Senior Men’s – Tuesday evening All Stars and Dynamos for the young Thursday 6-7pm Under 9 Softball Friday 6 – 7pm Under 11 Hardball Friday 6 – 7pm Women and Girls Softball Friday 6 - 7pm Under 13 and Under 15 Hardball Friday 7 – 8.30pm

What’s been happening at...
HARDWICK Primary School
GA
It was a day all were looking forward to, staff, pupils and parents, shoes were shined, bags packed, uniforms smartly laid out, March 8th was the first day back at school this year for many pupils and how welcome was that. How proud are we of our children, weeks of home learning and then a smooth transition back to school where they have been fantastic. How grateful are we of the support and understanding of parents and carers, and how amazingly dedicated have been our staff and senior leadership team with their commitment to the pupils, their planning, hard work and wholehearted purpose.
Unfortunately the much awaited return and the school finally back together again was short lived with a pupil and teacher testing positive for Covid-19 but the well planned risk assessment procedures were actioned immediately. Children and staff from the class bubbles involved selfisolated and home remote learning once again organised promptly, further warning that government lockdown rules should strictly be adhered to by all. So the term ended with all participating in Red Nose Day 2021, the theme aptly being “Superheroes”. Dressed as fictional and real life key worker heroes Hardwick joined in the fun as can be seen here, once again raising funds for Comic relief in colourful style. Daryl Jones – Head teacher

IT’S APRIL, SPRING INTO ACTION TO SAVE PAPER
T
he 1970’s everyone was talking about a paperless society. Some chance! Today we are producing more paper than ever before and chopping down more trees to feed this material hungry industry. In UK we use twelve and a half million tonnes of paper and cardboard, annually. There has also been an increase in paper and cardboard recycling but we need to find other ways to reduce our dependence on paper to help maintain our woods and forests. This month we will look at a few ways to help you reduce your paper and cardboard consumption.
1. Printing and paper.
a) Print on both sides of paper b) Think before you print. Do you really need to print it? c) If you only need one page from a document, only print that single one d) Read documents on your phone or laptop, try not to print them off e) Adjust margins to minimum setting when printing this will maximise the print on a page.
2. Production of paper toilet rolls means 27,000 trees are felled every day. Try bamboo toilet rolls instead, they are just as soft and the end result is the same. Save paper and reduce carbon emissions by up to 65%.
3. Use rags instead of paper towels.
Avoid paper plates, use durable, washable ones if you need something for a BBQ or party. Use a handkerchief instead of tissues.
4. Reduce paper waste by going
5. Once you
paperless wherever possible.
have read a book, share it with friends.
For example, have your utility bills emailed to you instead of posted. Ask the likes of Amazon to stop sending stuff in oversized cardboard packaging.
We also have loads of ideas at ecofrenzy.com to help you save money by making small life-style changes.

Oooops – Nearly there!!! Well, we are nearly open – Covid strikes again! Postponed from the 4th, the museum will welcome you all on Sunday April 18th at 10.00am till 4.00pm. Covid-19 safety restrictions will be in place. We will all adhere to these. Hands – Face – Space!! The start of the new season highlights how much goes on ‘behind the scenes’ during the winter months. Graham, Wendy, Richard and a few dedicated others have been rearranging exhibits and updating information, making (we hope) the museum experience more interesting. The other area of expertise is very visible on social media. Articles appear ‘like magic’ relating to the aircraft, aircrews, incidences and much more. FBook Sites including 94th Bomb group, 8th & 9th USAAF Airfield Memorials, Rougham Airfield etc. have great information. Researchers – including if I may (but not exclusively) - Roger Watts, Michael Faley, Jon Barber and others have provided plenty of information either as a direct request from aircrew relatives or just relevant stories that ‘pop up’. We are very grateful for all these contributions – BUT have you any within your family that we can share and use? Please come and tell us, message us – yes please, get in touch.
On a much more somber note, it is with deep sadness that we have learnt of the passing of a dear friend to the museum. Melvin Cocksedge, who has been a staunch supporter of the RCTAM, was the Rougham Estates Manager and Accountant. We send our sincere condolences to his family, friends and work colleagues. As our Chairman, Graham, said on social media “he will be sadly missed”. RIP and Blue Sky’s Sir. As we open, we continue our appeal for helpers, volunteers, tea-makers - and more. If you have a little time available (retired, furloughed etc. – even if you are going back to work!) and can give something to the museum PLEASE come and get involved. There are plenty of opportunities to help. Thanks for reading, thanks for supporting us and a big thank you to all the volunteers who give so much time, energy and effort to keep this YOUR MUSEUM operating. See you on the 18th – It WILL be here quicker than you can ‘blink an eye’. I’ve blinked a few times and it’s coming SOON! Please put this date in your diary.

Christ Church
MORETON HALL On Easter Day when the women went to the tomb they had absolutely no expectation of what they were about to find. They assumed that somebody would have to open the tomb to let them in to anoint the body. What they found was no soldiers or guards, the stone rolled away and the tomb empty. Some of them saw angels, others saw nothing and one, who delayed her departure, eventually saw Jesus. As we gradually and slowly come out of lockdown for many of us there is very little expectation that something good may happen. It will either be more of the same, gradually changing, and perhaps we will never fully return to what we had before. Many of us are tired, fed up and miserable and we have had our hopes and expectations completely destroyed, particularly in the area of relationships. On Easter Day we celebrate not just that Jesus Christ returned from the grave having defeated death for us all, but that God can do the absolute impossible. More than that, He can come up with solutions and answers to our problems that can totally transform our lives. That first Easter was not just a day and if you missed it – well you missed it. Easter went on for at least six weeks and all through that time many people saw the resurrected Jesus, spoke to Him, ate with Him, touched
Him, and received teaching and hope from Him. After those six weeks He returned to heaven, but He was not gone forever because from heaven He sent the Holy Spirit to be with us wherever we go. Ever since that time Christians have been transformed by the presence of Jesus in their lives by the Holy Spirit, and, because Jesus really is there, they have found that no matter what their circumstances are they can be totally transformed, sometimes immediately, and sometimes gradually. As we gather at Christ Church, Moreton Hall, on Easter Day for the first time for some months we will have a public service at 8.30 a.m. for Holy Communion to which you are all warmly invited so long as you book first. We will also have an Easter Celebration streamed live on Facebook at 10.30am on Easter morning via https:// www.facebook.com/ ChristChurchMoretonHall/ live/ please join us if you can. As the month of April progresses we hope gradually to return to public worship if it is safe to do so. But throughout that period, and beyond, social distancing restrictions will apply. Both in church life and community life much will have to be rebuilt. For many people there is no expectation of a significant improvement in their lifestyles and no expectation
whatsoever of a return to what they had before. However, I am confident in God and because I know the resurrected Christ as my personal friend and saviour and I have walked with Him these last forty years, I know that time and time again when all hope was gone, when there was absolutely no expectation of any good coming, God has transformed the situation out of all recognition. It is my firm belief that if you turn to God in prayer wherever you are, and consider seeking Him not just once but daily everything for you will change for the better. If and perhaps joining others who already know Him to carry on that path, your life and the lives of those around you can be completely changed. You many come to the tomb with no expectations. However, if you do come to the tomb and seek Jesus you will find the most amazing revelation for the tomb is empty. He is risen. And by the power of the Holy Spirit He can be present in your heart. Once you have Him there anything, absolutely anything, is possible. Thank you all for all the rain bows you sent it in It was so good to remember and give thanks for so many things during Lockdown With every good wish for a happy, safe and Christ filled Easter, Revd. Canon Jonathan Ford. Minister Christ Church Moreton Hall

NEWS OF THE WORLD
US civil war veteran Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd (Tom Hanks) doesn’t want to go home. Instead he spends his time moving from one town in Texas to the next and makes his way by reading people the news of the day. However, life is upturned when he runs into ten-year-old Kiowa person Johanna (Helena Zengel). Her people have been killed and her only living relatives are hundreds of miles away. Kidd takes the lost child under his wing and promises to deliver her to her family – only things aren’t quite as simple as they might seem.
THE DIG
Set against the backdrop of a Britain on the brink of war, The Dig chronicles one of the greatest archeological finds ever discovered in the Isles, the 1939 Sutton Hoo excavation. When wealthy landowner Edith Pretty (Carey Mulligan) hires archeologist Basil Brown (Ralph Fiennes) to dig up large mounds on her property, the pair make a startling discovery - a ship from the Dark Ages that turns out to be the burial site of someone of tremendous distinction. But as word of the treasure spreads, more high profile archeologists move in on Pretty and Brown’s find to take ownership. A slow build but worthy of the acclaim it’s received, The Dig is a stunning looking, well-acted period drama about a much untold piece of history.
ABOUT TIME
Richard Curtis is known for his cute British rom-coms and About Time is no exception. On his 21st birthday, Tim, played by Domhnall Gleeson, discovers he has the ability to time travel, and immediately uses it to omit embarrassing moments and get himself a girlfriend. He meets the girl of his dreams, played by Rachel McAdams and pops through time to woo her. It’s less about the sci fi than you would think, and more about the life and loves of the characters, with a father-son relationship that will have you in tears between Tim and his dad, played by Bill Nighy.

If you haven’t got the time or patience to sit through one of the many Netflix series, there are plenty of films to choose from, here are just some of the popular ones to try...
GAME NIGHT
Game-obsessed couple Max and Annie (Jason Bateman, Rachel McAdams) and their group of friends are thrown quite the curveball when Max’s brother Brooks (Kyle Chandler) rolls into town and offers to host their weekly game night. Instead of the usual Pictionary white board, Brooks has organised for one person of the group to be abducted, leaving the rest to track them down. But as the night goes on, it soon becomes obvious that this ‘abduction’ might not be a game at all. Game Night is a fun watch but is certainly helped by an all-star cast seemingly having a lot of fun. Jesse Plemons as oddball neighbour Gary is an absolute standout, meanwhile Billy Magnussen, Sharon Hogan and Chelsea Peretti also shine.
US (2019)
Jordan Peele had a tough job following up his Oscarwinning smash Get Out, but he did an excellent job with this chilling slice of horror. Inspired by an old episode of The Twilight Zone, the film follows a family who are enjoying their holidays in Santa Cruz only to find that they are being stalked by a group of terrifying doppelgängers – who very soon make their life a living hell.
YES DAY (2021)
This Netflix original family comedy film stars Jennifer Garner and Edgar Ramirez as a normally strict mother and father who decide that for one day only, they will say yes to all of their children’s requests. What follows is a whirlwind adventure around Los Angeles, that bring the family closer to each other than ever before.

EASTER – A TIME TO START LIVING Spring always brings fresh colour into our lives after the rigours of winter. The weather is starting to warm up and new shoots push through the soil seeking the sun. This year, in particular, we are all looking forward to the return to some elements of normality. New life is also the theme of the greatest festival in the Christian calendar – Easter. It is a great time to make a new start – to discover the forgiveness, purpose and joy that following Jesus can bring. Life, after all, is more than just survival from day to day. Easter celebrates the day a bit more than 2000 years ago that the world was changed forever. God loved each one of us so much that he sent his only son, Jesus, to our world. He lived a life free of wrong doing, and revealed his Father’s nature to us. His love for us was shown by his willingness to suffer and die on a cross as the one and only sacrifice for all our sins. Three days later He rose from death and is still alive in people today. By simply believing, we can have new life in Him! If you don’t get to read this until after the Easter holiday – worry not. All of the year, we are an Easter people, living in the light of the resurrection, enlivened by joy and empowered by love.
Happy Easter!
We are all looking forward to our new minister, Mike Simm, and his wife, Sarah, joining us in the middle of April. His induction and licencing service is scheduled for Sunday 18 April – probably on Zoom. If you would like to attend, please register your interest on our website. We are now starting to plan a return to regular services in the community centre when we are satisfied that it is safe to do so. We will then have a service of welcome for Mike and Sarah. In the meantime, our services and activities online are all growing. For more information, please click onto our website.
