NEW PLAY AREA

The new play area is now open and by all accounts it is very popular with everyone, however with its success comes problems. There are some older youths spoiling the kids playing due to them skateboarding down the slides, chucking the sand out of the play area, taking shopping trollies in and in general making problems for other users. The council do not have rangers who can keep an eye on the play area and I would ask anyone who could keep an eye on the area and give me a call if you see any problems.

OVERGROWN AREAS Due to the unseasonal weather there has been a lot of growth of weeds nettle and flora, the council are doing their best to keep on top of this and I know it seems like some areas are being neglected, not so, in the main we are very lucky and the estate always looks in very good condition. There is one place I have requested the council to attend to and that is on the Bartons, Pond Grove, it appears that since I had the fence to prevent the travellers from gaining access, it has been left to just grow. Hopefully this should be sorted.

SCHOOL’S OUT

Yes Mums and Dads, schools out and you have at least six weeks of child minding. What to do to keep kiddies happy? Well there are a lot of activities happening all over the town, Nowton Park will have a list of events going on sponsored by the Town council. The Council have granted £10,000 to pay for an active team working on events at Nowton Park, watch out for fliers and posters with information. Closer to home here on Moreton hall, the Youth club will be open starting on Thursday the 4th August for mums and dads to come along with their children and enjoy an open house with free use of clubs equipment, toilets and kitchen. Some mums are getting together to run things. Another area you might like to go to is Knettershall Heath where you can picnic, BBQ and swim and apart from paying a £1 entrance the rest is free.

That’s all for now, until next time take care, Frank Warby AUGUST 2016 | 11

LOCAL NEWS

from Moreton Hall Residents Association Hi Moreton Hall Resident

LITTER

If you have never heard of us, we are a group of residents elected to a committee at an AGM every year whose purpose is to listen to residents’ concerns, and then where necessary, channel them to the right agency, follow them up or try to resolve them ourselves, using our long list of contacts.

There is a small conscientious team of litter pickers who operate on Moreton Hall, organised by Cllrs. Frank and Patsy Warby.

We have always tried to be representative of the people living on the estate, but we desperately need some younger people who could spend a few hours a month, or every other month as a member of our committee, usually on Thursday evenings, at the Community Centre. As residents of Moreton Hall you are members of the Association and there are no subscriptions. MHRA LOGO We now have a MHRA logo which could be seen for the first time on our banner which was in use on our stall at the Abbots Green School Fete on Saturday 9th July. Can I thank all those people who stopped and spoke to us. DEVOLUTION Basically this is a way of getting more Government money into the area for things like infrastructure upgrades, but this would involve us having an elected Mayor and perhaps additional administration, as a result. There is a consultation on this which started 8th July and ends on August 24th 2016 For a full explanation and to reply to the consultation visit wwweastangliandevo.co.uk or wwwwestsuffolk.gov.uk/devo Or you can write to your Borough, County Councillors or contact us with your views, and we will make a return on behalf of MHRA.

To increase effectiveness and coverage, our suggestion would be, to try to organise the Estate into areas with a small team in each area to be responsible for litter picking and fly poster identification and removal. Equipment and maybe anti-litter literature could be supplied by the Borough Council. Any comments please. POT HOLES AND FLOODING DUE TO BLOCKED OR INEFFECTIVE DRAINS On the Suffolk County Council Website there is an on line method of reporting these problems. If you are unable to do this contact your County, Borough or Town Councillors with the problem or you can contact us. Remember you cannot ask a contractor you may see already fixing a problem to fix the one you have identified as they are obliged to stick rigidly to their work schedule. WEB SITE We have a grant from Bury St. Edmunds Town Council to set up a MHRA web site, and are actively working to get this up and running. CONTACT MHRA If you need to contact us please e-mail secretarymhra@gmail.com Or read the information on our notice board at the Community Centre Or attend our next committee meeting on Thursday 25th August at 19 30 in the Conference room at the Community Centre Cliff Hind, Chairman MHRA

HEALTH HEALTH & & BEAUTY BEAUTY surgery and vitamin under- or overuse can also lead to hair loss. Using too many chemicals on the hair, like those found in hair dyes, permanents and straighteners, can also be the culprits. Overuse of certain types of styling tools like hair dryers, hot rollers, curling irons or straight irons can damage the hair, causing it to break away from the scalp. Even something as simple as too much washing, rubbing of the hair, or pulling it tight for styling can cause damage, particularly when the hair is wet. Unfortunately, in some instances hair loss can be permanent with or without treatment. While many medical conditions that lead to hair loss can be treated, there’s no guarantee of a return to normal hair growth patterns. Women who experience cancer, for example, may find their hair grows back thicker than before chemotherapy and radiation. Others, on the other hand, find it doesn’t grow back at all or that it is sporadic in nature.

contain fewer food items that are fatty or sugary in nature. Chicken, eggs and fish are high in proteins that are good for the hair. Liver, nuts and soybeans contain much-needed biotin, which helps to thicken the hair shaft. Beef and certain types of seafood like clams, crabs, oysters and salmon are rich in vitamin B5, which is essential for new hair growth, as is the folic acid in brown rice, grains and leaf vegetables. Vitamin supplements may also help many women grow new hair if the follicle isn’t damaged. Hair growth products will work for some women. Unfortunately, the treatments can be expensive since they must be continued for an extended period of time in order to ensure continued hair growth. Hair transplants are very expensive. They don’t always “take” or may require supplemental transplants in the future.

In cases where chemical or product causes hair fall out, or when drugs cause the problem, hair may grow back once use of those items is stopped. However, that isn’t always the case, and hair may very well grow back differently than it did previously. It depends upon how much damage was actually done to the hair follicle itself. The same can be said for use styling tools and hair styling products.

When hair loss can’t be cured, it becomes necessary to look for other methods of dealing with the problem. Some women can afford hair transplants while others are forced to resort to hiding. Many women resort to wigs, hairpieces, extensions, weaves, hats, turbans or bandanas for that purpose. All are feasible, but some are less expensive than others and some work in certain situations but not others.

If stress or quick and heavy weight loss is the cause, a change in diet maybe called for to ensure new hair growth. Diets need to be rich in proteins, fruits, vegetables and whole grains and need to

Wigs provide all-encompassing concealment. It allows a woman to choose the hair colour she wants or to experiment with more than one. She can also opt for varying styles and lengths.

With today’s lighter weight, cooler wigs, most women can find something to suit their needs. Of course, synthetic options are considerably cheaper than human hair wigs. The former can be cheap while the latter can cost hundreds of pounds, especially if they’re custom made. Hairpieces can supplement hair loss that occurs in only certain areas like the hair crown or at the sides. Extensions lengthen the hair, as can weaves. Hairpieces and extensions come in both synthetic and human hair. Most weaves are done only with human hair, although some synthetic options are also available. Costs will vary depending upon the hair and style choice and where the work is done; clip-in extensions and hairpieces can be purchased online or through beauty supply stores and is done by the individual right at home. Weaves require professional assistance and can be very expensive. Hats and bandanas are relatively inexpensive and can be found almost anywhere. Unfortunately, not all women feel comfortable wearing them. Some scientists believe that hair loss will continue to grow as a national problem, primarily due to all the outside influences that hair is exposed to. If so, more and more women will face hair loss problems and be looking for solutions to maintain their natural beauty.

Home & Away BY ANDREW SOUTHWOOD

B

y the time you read this the school holidays will be in full swing. Some of you will be enjoying precious special time with your little angels; others will be counting down the days until the school gates open again. There’s no shame in it. After all, you can get too much of a good thing, and these 6 weeks will I’m sure have their ‘challenging’ moments for all of us. I have to admit I did have some concerns that I would be unable to top the excitement of the road resurfacing week, back in July. I actually think it would be worth the whole street chipping in so that they come back and do it again every year. It’d be cheaper than hiring a kids entertainer for a week, far more educational, with the added bonus of getting a shiny new road at the end of it. However, the family holiday is booked, and that will be

54 | AUGUST 2016

exciting and exhausting in equal measures. While some kids in the class boast about going to Florida or Europe (don’t mention the EU, don’t mention the EU… doh!) and such like, ours have to get by with UK destinations. The very thought of taking the family through an airport gives me a rash and makes me hyperventilate. Queuing for 30 seconds at Tesco Express is enough to agitate the kids, 3hrs in passport control would blow their mind. Choosing the specific destination is simply a matter of following a basic mathematical and geographical algorithm (like all my key life decisions). This requires it to be within 2.5 hrs drive, be ‘rural’, and have a sensible bedroom layout to suit our young family (i.e. rubbish sleeping toddler on same level). Factor all those in and you are left with a fairly easy choice of a handful of farm

cottages. Our eldest still talks about the time we went on holiday a few years back and woke to find a dozen highland cows breathing up against the cottage windows. The chances are, as you read this, we will be settled into our retreat. Planning random day trips to local parks, stone circles, and museums. Plenty of fresh air and exploring with only a very small sprinkle of tacky tourist hot spots. I’m not judging – each to their own and all that. That’s just how we roll. Come September our kids will be back in class, trying to write about this. Hopefully the highlight of this holiday won’t be me getting the family stuck on the side of a large peak in Dovedale National Park… which remains probably the worst experience of my adult life. Oh well, still more exciting than Disneyland though I reckon!?

Pauls jobs for the month

Pauls

Vegetable Garden n Sow spring onions, radishes and rocket n Lift and dry onions and shallots. Garlic can be lifted now a sign of this is when the plant has started to turn yellow n This is the time to start harvesting early potatoes, lettuce, beetroot, marrows , pumpkins ,runner beans apples and pears n With the warm weather watering in particular is best done in the evening or the morning as are routine jobs such as weeding, hoeing and dead heading spent blooms

Fruit n Now that any fruit has been picked you can cut back gooseberries, redcurrant and blackcurrant bushes. Also cut down to the ground any spent raspberry canes n You can cut strawberry runners from their parent plants and place them in new rows n Provide support for any heavily laden fruit trees. Branches can break or take over a pathway unless you tie in supports. n You can prevent ants and other crawling insects from climbing your fruit trees by using sticky glue bands.

GARDEN SERVICES

This months poem... - Michelle L. Thieme, August’s Crown

n If you do nothing else this is a month for deadheading flowers regularly. Roses always look better for a regular tidy n August is a good month to propagate extra plants from cuttings. Choose healthy shoots of the current seasons growth and using a sharp knife cut below a leaf joint. Remove lower leaves from the cuttings and place several around the edge of a large pot. Keep in a warm spot but ensuring the compost is moist. You can do his now with Buddleia, Forsythia, hebe, Hydrangea, Laurel, Philadelphus, Rosemary and Weigela . Once the plants are well rooted move them into larger individual pots. n Many hedges will also benefit from a light trim to keep them tidy to avoid a lot of work in the autumn when growing starts to slow. n Remove fading flowers from dahlias this helps to prevent grey mould forming and encourages new flower formation n Irises have finished flowering so now is a good time to increase your stocks by dividing the rhizomes and planting them elsewhere in your garden.

“Whilst August yet wears her golden crown, Ripening fields lush- bright with promise; Summer waxes long, then wanes, quietly passing Her fading green glory on to riotous Autumn.”

You’re never fully dressed

without a Smile!

Don’t you just love the Facebook ‘on this day’ reminders? A casual shout out to the happy days gone by and the memorable moments you’ve deemed sharable with the online community. I was looking through a couple of my yesteryear posts and it would seem a few summer days in 2008 were particularly smiley ones. My world of Facebook was littered with inspirational quotes all about smiling and this got me thinking about this months article. Did you know that endorphins are released every time you smile and these endorphins contribute to lowering stress levels and making us feel happy? AND, even when we don’t feel particularly inclined to smile, if we just choose to fake it our brain can’t distinguish between the genuine smile and fake smile, so endorphins are released and do their ‘happy’ job just the same! Google it, smiling really does have this knock on effect. I love to smile and I love to see others with a grin spanning their faces from ear to ear. I think most people feel the same. Smiling has this contagious attribute; when one person smiles you can’t help but smile back. I can’t anyway! Several years ago, probably during my ‘Facebook Smiley Time’ of 2008, I listened to a guy do a short

68 | AUGUST 2016

talk about the impact of smiling. He explained a social experiment he did walking down the street smiling at people as they passed. He recalled peoples reactions; 99% of the time people smiled back. I decided to do the same and sure enough the majority of people smiled in return. A simple yet very powerful act which did not only alter my own personal disposition but also the disposition of others around me. Try it, I dare you, go smile at someone down the street and see how they respond. Whatever their reaction, I guarantee you’ll feel good about yourself. There is so much out there about the benefits of smiling. Clearly it’s good for us. According to Rashida Jones “Smiling is definitely one of the best beauty remedies. If you have a good

HOME + LIFESTYLE

sense of humour and a good approach to life, that’s beautiful.” Every magazine we read is covered with advert after advert promoting the next best beauty product. We all want to feel beautiful. Perhaps we’re missing a trick? If we smiled more and frowned less, maybe our whole bodies would feel refreshed, invigorated, revitalised, and the need for artificial lotions and potions would far smaller. A smile is almost certainly much more cost effective! As a fan of musicals, there’s this one song in particular I’ve been humming while writing today, ‘Smile’ from Annie. It a great song and in it the lyrics state “you’re never fully dressed without a smile.” We all get up, get showered, throw on some clothes, scoff a bit of toast while running out the door and before we know it, we’re in the car

having forgotten to change out of our slippers, realising the car needs filling up before work and annoyed at the fact you’ve got a blob of toothpaste on your new black skirt. Frowns and grimaces make their appearance early on in the day, that’s normal for me, especially with little people in the mix! In those moments, I’m going to consciously take note of Annie and get dressed properly. I will put my smile on, ear to ear. That way, if all goes to plan (and if Google really is true), I can get the endorphins pumping, apply the best beautifying face cream on the market and impact those around me all at the same time. Genius. Join me, “pack up your troubles in your old kit bag and smile, smile, smile.”

CHURCH NEWS

Christ Church MORETON HALL Wow! What a month we have had since the last Moreton Hall Directory. Brexit, followed by the resignation of our Prime Minister, followed by the election of a new one, followed by a completely new Cabinet, and all this at a time when both major political parties, Labour and Conservative, have been behaving like an episode of Game of Thrones – people betraying one another, others making bids for power. Who would have thought all this would happen. Then we had all the wonder and amazement of the European Championship; England disgracing themselves and Wales proving themselves to be the heroes of the hour; the tears of joy of Portugal coupled with the tears of despair from the French national team.

responded by murdering policemen; the tragedy of Nice, where the lorry was deliberately driven to kill over eighty people and injure hundreds of others; and, of course, the upheaval in Turkey where hundreds of thousands have been arrested and detained without proper trial. Amidst all the tragedy it is easy to forget the ongoing problems in Syria and the Middle East as well as the mounting death toll in the civil war in the new country of Southern Sudan. It is so easy at this point to turn the television over to CBeeBs and forget the horrors of the world that is around us.

At Christ Church, Moreton Hall we were amazed at the results of Brexit as was everyone else, but felt compelled to continue in prayer. Since then all the Home Groups have been praying as well as prayers We can observe all this and in the Church Services and extra prayer meetings remain to some degree have been put on. We are unmoved, because while confident that things have it will affect us ultimately, changed because we have it does not affect us immediately. This means it is prayed. One of the things very easy to be unmoved by I am really sure of is that the real tragedies unfolding because every Anglican around us in other countries. Church prays for the Queen every Sunday, the result is Firstly, America where the the success and longevity black community feel that of her reign. But prayer the police are deliberately doesn’t just change events murdering them and have 82 | AUGUST 2016

around us, it changes us inwardly. In our church there were different views over Brexit but now people are reconciled and working and praying together. Everyone was anxious about the future but there now seems to be a quiet confidence that things will work out better than we had imagined. Whatever you think of Mrs. May, and it is yet to be seen what sort of Prime Minister she will make, one thing is clear, she must not do this job unsupported. It is the duty of Christians everywhere to pray for the government whether they like it or not (see Romans 13). We will pray for Mrs. May and her new team as they negotiate Britain’s future in a very difficult world. We are, of course, very concerned about what is going to happen in America. Many people have expressed to me privately their concerns about both the leading candidates. Our relationship with America and theirs with the rest of the world, is vital for global security. Once again, we will be praying that God’s will be done. In the meantime, the growth of faith is leading to some interesting statistics. Almost every Sunday in July, August and September, we will
