EDITOR’S LETTER
Welcome to the FEBRUARY ISSUE
Well, we’ve had a little dusting of snow, and now that’s gone, soon it will be time to look forward to Spring, and the hope that we’re closer to things starting to go back to some sort of normality. It’s Valentine’s Day this month, but we may well be cooking ourselves a romantic meal for two at home, so we have come up with a 3 course meal you could try on pages 36, 38 and 40, they’re vegan recipes, and they all look absolutely scrummy. Being stuck at home with no gyms open right now, for many of us, the living room is our workout room. On pages 62-63, we’ve picked out some great workout gear to help keep you motivated. As usual, we’ve got lots of local news to keep you up to date. Keep safe and we’ll see you next month. GEMMA PROCTER, editor

Support Local and Love Local Mike Kirkham, Business Improvement District,
Our Bury St Edmunds The town centre business improvement district, Our Bury St Edmunds, has been proudly supporting over 400 town centre businesses for many years and in 2019, following a successful reballot, were given the go ahead to continue this support for a third five-year term. Little did we know that 2020 would be a year like no other but nevertheless we, like our businesses, adapted and found new ways to continue. Of course, none of this really works without one important ingredient, the support of local people and visitors. Local businesses are incredibly grateful for the continued support and loyalty displayed by all their customers, especially during these difficult and challenging times, and with the vaccination programme in full flow, and we begin to come out of this pandemic, we will bounce back.
During the pandemic we have, in collaboration with Bury St Edmunds Town Council, ensured that messaging and information on Government guidance and the services businesses continue to deliver is provided. In response, public support has been overwhelming – for this we are extremely grateful, so thank you! Please continue to support your local businesses, Shop Local and Love Local. This really does make a big difference and ensures that we will once again be ready to welcome you back to the high street that you have come to love and enjoy.
During Covid restrictions, essential services continue to be delivered by local businesses and, where possible, your favourite shops, cafes, restaurants and more have adapted to bring you online, delivery and click & collect services. You may be thinking ‘How can I make a difference at the moment, how can I do my bit?’, well there are many ways. You could order a takeaway meal or drinks to support local restaurants, cafes, and pubs. You could buy a Bury St Edmunds gift card, which can be used at over 50 town centre businesses, including online for a growing number of these, or you may choose to buy a specific stores gift card or voucher. You could shop local by visiting a local business’s online store and you can Love Local by liking and sharing a business on social media or writing a positive review – it really does help!
To further support local businesses, on the 14th February, Valentine’s Day, we are urging locals to celebrate Love Local Day, which is being coordinated across the UK by www.shopappy.com. This is your opportunity to share your appreciation for your local shops and businesses on social media using #LoveLocalDay. In addition, if you nominate your favourite business on our Facebook page @ourburystedmunds on the 14th February we will select the winning nomination and send them a special gift! You will also be in with a chance to win a Bury St Edmunds gift card. It takes two minutes to create a bit of happiness. Let us show everyone how we do things in Bury St Edmunds, how much we really value our lovely town centre and amazing businesses and encourage your neighbours and community to do the same. This brand new initiative works in the same way as buying a gift card for any individual retailer and is Mastercard-based allowing you to purchase with confidence. But instead of only being able to use it at one store, the Our Bury St Edmunds Gift Card can be spent in any participating business in the town centre. This could be your favourite independent shop or high street brand with restaurants and hair salons also eligible to accept it. Not only does buying an Our Bury St Edmunds Gift Card take the uncertainty out of your present buying, but it’s also helping to support all the businesses that make Bury St Edmunds the fabulous town centre it is!
To find out what services businesses are providing in Bury St Edmunds, visit our Lockdown Listings at www.ourburystedmunds.com and our Facebook page @ourburystedmunds.

Keeping supporting local and making a difference to your hospital
Registered Charity No. 1049223
As we write this month’s page, things are harder than they’ve ever been for so many of us. With many businesses closed, people furloughed, others trying to juggle child care with home working and just the general worry we are all feeling for our nearest and dearest. As your local hospital charity, we want to ensure we continue to support your local hospital. Staff are tired, they’ve been working so hard for so many months to care for us. Many of you have been kind enough to want to donate gifts and cakes for staff. While this is so generous we need to refrain from any unnecessary visits to the hospital. We cannot be sure that donations are Covid free and we also need to avoid staff sharing food as this could lead to whole areas becoming infected with Covid-19. This is one of the reasons we set up our Help your local NHS hospital appeal. By donating to our appeal, you can be sure your money will be used for exactly what is needed by West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust. So far donations have allowed us to provide calm spaces for staff away from the wards. These areas have proved invaluable and as this goes to press we are looking to add more so staff can break out in a socially distanced way during their much-needed breaks. Donations have allowed us to provide staff welfare packs for those who are isolating and struggling financially. We have provided tablets for overseas nurses to help them as they isolate on arrival. These tablets ensure they can complete their training before heading to the wards to care for us. Wards and departments have had to rethink how they care for patients. Your generosity means we have been able to provide equipment for paediatrics, cardiology and physiotherapy to name a few. The equipment is aiding them as they hold virtual clinics or as they start to care for patients as they recover from Covid. One such purchase is a £4000 Motomed. This static bicycle can be used in a bed and will mean post Covid patients will be able to have sessions to help build up their strength again. One huge impact of the Coronavirus pandemic has been mental health. NHS staff are an amazing bunch, they are always ready to roll up their sleeves and muck in and to go above and beyond but this pandemic has tested us all. While we can’t be with our loved ones to hold their hand, the nursing staff step up and take our place. This naturally takes it toil and so we have funded psychological support to help them deal with extra workload they find themselves dealing with to ensure they are strong enough to continue.

NG SNAKE
Last year was unique, and as a community we celebrated all sorts of brilliant initiatives during the months of disruption and turmoil. At our Community Centre we have unveiled a piece of history to mark the events of 2020 created thanks to hundreds of children and their families. From June, a collection of painted commemorative stones formed a slithering rock snake along Caie Walk, the brainchild of resident Fay Lambert and her daughters Cassie, 13, and Maisie, 10 - a brilliant way of giving children something to do during lockdown. Our hugely supportive local councillors Patrick Chung and Ann Williamson wanted to preserve the fantastic collection of some 400 amazing creations so provided money from their locality funds and called on Bury artist Jacqui Campbell to create a plaque which has now been erected on the wall of the Centre. The rest of the stones we hope to have placed in the grass outside the building as a lasting reminder about some of the good things about a challenging year. We can now but hope that the current restrictions reduce the awful number of those affected by this dreadful virus and, with the new vaccines rolling out as the year progresses, some sort of normality may return so we can welcome back our regular and new Centre users and hirers. As always contact Jackie on 01284 703705 who will be monitoring any messages.

https://moretonhallresidents.wordpress.com/ As I write this, we are at the start of our third lockdown, in another attempt to slow down the infection rate of the virus. I am sure that if we all follow the advice, we should soon be back to normality. Public Space Protection Order (PSPO)
We, through your Councillors, have asked the District Council to extend the present order in the Town, to cover Moreton Hall, to discourage the “boy racers and other antisocial behaviour. There will be a public consultation on this, between the 18th of January and the 21st of February 2021. Details can be found on the West Suffolk Council web site. We understand that details will also be communicated via social media and press releases. Please take part in this consultation, or if this is not possible send your comments to your Councillors, or ourselves, who will pass them on. A final decision will be made, after a review of the consultation, at the at the March Cabinet meeting. Increasing HGV traffic through our estate
The Residents Association and your County Councillor Trevor Beckwith have been making representation regarding this matter to the County Council for at least the past 3 years. To date we have not had a positive response to our questions and suggestions. One thing we would like the County Council to consider, is more use made of Junction 45 (the Rookery) on the A14, so that HGV traffic serving the industrial area would not need to 18 | FEBRUARY 2021
pass through the estate. This could be done cost effectively by clear and well thought out signage. We know that the County wide lorry routes are being reviewed, but the Councils and public will not be consulted until the summer of this year. Details of this consultation will be given in due course. It is felt therefore that we need to ask you, the residents to let us know your feelings and observations on this matter, so that we can raise the profile of this increasing problem. So Please let us have your views. Decoration of the underpass
The Residents Association together with our local Councillors and Council Officers, are working to finalise the details of this project, so that it can be implemented as soon as prevailing conditions allow. CityFibre

ssential. urs in 2021. Our Moreton Hall Estate
It’s hard to believe that we are in February already, I think whilst we are in lockdown, time has no meaning, we get into a routine and just move on. We are all going through tough times, not known since the 1940’s. People are scared to leave their homes, worried about catching this awful virus. Parents balancing work while having to home school their children, those who are furlughed worrying about money and feeding the family. Yes, there is help out there but is it enough and is it getting to the people when they need it, like I said, worrying times. There are a lot of good people on our estate doing a fantastic job of shopping and making contact with elderly and lonely people. On their behalf, Thank you.

In September Clive, Patsy and I agreed that we needed some fresh blood with fresh ideas to take the club forward, Having spoken to the families officer on the council, we were given the name of someone who was intetested in taking on the role. We met with Leon Baxter in the club and found him to be ideal for the role. We handed over the club in good condition and financialy sound with £28,000 in the bank. I would like to thank our helpers over the last 13 years, Vickie Eke, Erica Everett, Michelle Rolls, without their help the club would have been closed, also our trustees Patsy Warby, Clive Springett who kept us legal and up to date with the changes regarding youth clubs, child welfare and all the other duties of a trustee. We wish Leon and his team the very Fullbest use of PPE in taking the club forward.

Free webinar for people suffering from tinnitus and hearing loss. Do you hear whistling, buzzing or humming in your ears? You may be experiencing Tinnitus and you are not alone. To mark NATIONAL TINNITUS WEEK (February 1st-7th) local hearing care specialists, The Hearing Care Centre, are running a free to attend online webinar on Friday February 5th at 1.00pm, looking at the condition and wider issues surrounding hearing loss. The company operates a local hearing clinic at The Bury Natural Health Centre at Fornham St Genevieve. The presentation, which will be held via Zoom and last for approximately 30 minutes, will be led by Simon Myhill, RHAD FdSc FSHAA, who is the Clinical Lead at The Hearing Care Centre. Simon will not only be sharing important information about the subject, but also offering the opportunity for attendees to ask questions. Affecting about 15 to 20 percent of people tinnitus is a condition where noises are heard when there is no external source, usually in the ears or in the head. Many people however don’t understand that it isn’t a condition itself but it’s a symptom of an underlying 18/01/2021 09:00:12 condition, such as age-related hearing loss, ear injury or a circulatory system disorder.

THE MYSTERY OF THE NON-FALLING OAK LEAVES
B
ack in July, the mighty oak in Ten Acre Field fell with an early-morning crash. Appropriately, the Council made it safe but left the majority of the tree in place as a memorial to itself and to remain a wildlife reservoir for decades to come. Trees in Moreton Hall and across the UK are bare of leaves, and have been for some time. But if you walk in Ten Acre Field, or see it from Symonds Road, you will see that the fallen oak has kept its leaves. They’re dark brown and dead of course, but still attached. But why have they not fallen off?
Leaf-fall in autumn is actually an active process, not something that just happens passively. When the leaves grow in spring, a specialised layer of cells grows at the base of the leaf stalk where it is attached to the stem. This layer of cells is called the abscission layer. In autumn, as the days grow short and photosynthesis provides less energy than it takes to maintain the leaf, sugars and proteins in the leaf are withdrawn into sap and stored over winter in the tree, and as this happens the beautiful orange, yellow, red and brown colours emerge in the leaf. A
plant hormone called auxin then reduces in the leaves, the abscission layer of cells can no longer maintain itself and the cells break. The connection to the twig is broken and the leaf falls off. This process was of course interrupted by the oak tree falling down. It died, so there was no time for the auxin hormone to influence the abscission layer to do its thing and break. The leaves therefore remain firmly joined to the tree despite storms and snow. The dead leaves may even provide enough shelter in spring for birds to nest in the dead tree!

Building Community (Centre) Very exciting work has now begun on the front of the Community Centre. This has been worked on for many years - I remember going to meetings way back in 2012 with then MP David Ruffley to secure the cash that developers are obliged to pay as part of house building for the use of our community centre. With recent input from Suffolk Libraries, the funds were in place to begin works and only some input from Covid have delayed matters. I was able to secure £20k from Town Council as reported last month to aid with the development works. The centre is brilliantly run by Nigel, Kerrie and the team and we owe a huge amount to their hard work. Great revamp to come.
Psst! PSPO
PSPO stands for “Public Space Protection Order” and there are currently two in place around West Suffolk and they give police powers to tackle anti-social behaviour, such as drinking or car racing. Periodically, these are reviewed and at the last round both Trevor and I requested that the PSPO for Bury Town Centre be extended to Moreton Hall. We expected this to happen in 2018, but strangely it was pulled at the last minute, presumably over costs. This was clearly a false economy as much time and resources were spent tackling the impact groups of people caused whilst racing near Suffolk Park. I spent countless days working with the police and utilising social media to mitigate the issues and this, coupled with winter and the ongoing impact of Covid, the issue has lessened, however we still need to act as this may be masking the underlying issue. We now have an active public consultation which you can participate in at westsuffolk.gov. uk/consultations. Please log in and have your say - the more of us who request the better the chance of success.

Xmas Dinner (90 of them)
I am very proud of what we achieved over the last few months in terms of Covid support in our Town. As well as providing £20k of support for town centre business, we have been able to support individuals using Ann Williamson’s innovative approach of underwriting shopping bills for vulnerable people who have been unable to leave home. The warmest project, however, was being able to provide Xmas Dinner to some of our friends and neighbours who have been unable to secure their own. Using Abbeycroft Leisure, the College and volunteers, we got over 90 meals out to those who we know really needed them - there was a bag made up and recipe cards from one of our top local chefs. You can see a short video on Youtube if you search for Bury St Edmunds Festive Food Project.
INJECTING SOME HOPE We now have Covid vaccinations well under way across Moreton Hall and Bury St Edmunds. Naturally, it is being prioritised to front line, carers and the most vulnerable first. I was able to phone a few residents of Oxslip House to see how things were getting along and, whilst some may feel they’re down the list, there is a good weekly testing programme and busy NHS staff are getting vaccine to us pretty quickly. Some hope and positivity for the coming year.

UPDATE FROM THE WEST SUFFOLK LYMPHOEDEMA SERVICE WSLS is still operating as near to normal as possible. They are still seeing all those in need of face to face appointments where safe to do so and holding virtual/phone consultations when appropriate. Patients will be contacted as usual when they are due for review and if they have any queries or concerns about their condition, they should not hesitate to contact WSLS in the usual way on 01284 712732.
Exercise is important all year round Exercise really can help with the managing Lymphoedema and Lipodema but in this winter weather we’ve been having, it’s not always welcoming to venture outside. Tripudio and yoga type exercises are some of the exercises that can be done indoors and also chair exercises too. The aim is to keep moving, so waggling your hands, feet and toes in circles, not necessarily at the same time!, whilst sitting down or say when watching TV helps with lymphatic fluid and also blood circulation. Roll a tennis ball, or similar, under your foot when sitting, repeatedly making a fist whilst holding the ball in the same hand or maybe dance around with your hands in the air like you just don’t care! Whatever exercises you choose to do, it’s important that you do them safely. LSS 2021 MEETINGS As lockdown continues LSS is continuing to follow Government Guidelines and has cancelled its 8th March meeting. It is regrettable that we have had to cancel yet another meeting but everyone’s own safety comes first. We do sincerely hope to be able to hold our 7th June meeting, which if we can, will be a celebratory meeting for all LSS members. We do thank all LSS members for their continued support during these continued unprecedented times. DATES FOR YOUR DIARY: LSS 2021 MEETING DATES: JUNE 7TH, AUGUST 9TH, OCTOBER 11TH AND DECEMBER 13TH - Subject to Government Guidelines allowing. 7pm – 9pm at at Moreton Hall Community Centre. Covid-19 has affected our lives in many ways especially in the lack of support services for many health areas which is why this group is immensely important to the members who participate in it. No one seeming to want to help at this vital time is a real worry. With members also missing the contact and socialising at group meetings this is where the challenge group comes into its own. This group of people who have come together are kind, caring, supportive and very good friends that are there for each other. Each time one of them reaches out others respond, making their pain journey easier to bear. They are all non-judgmental and accept you as you are. The year could have been so much worse without this group. Those that did the challenges did them with enthusiasm and met them even though they may not have felt like it at the time. All troopers for having a go. The Zoom meetings give members the opportunity to see each other and forget they are all in different areas, to be able to chat comfortably, to have a laugh, to have something to lighten the day and look forward to and to learn a new skill. CPSG is all about bringing people in pain together and that is exactly what this group has achieved in the absence of meetings. it has made the year bearable for all those involved. As one member commented “I count my blessings to have you as friends, no one to judge you and understand how you feel is invaluable. The new year has brought with it many bigger challenges to embrace so we will be spending, yet again, another holiday at windowsill bay however that will not stop the challenge group working its magic and keeping one and all occupied. We must put one foot in front of the other until all this subsides and the sun comes out on another day. For more details about CPSG please email info@chronicpainsupportgroup.co.uk or visit www.chronicpainsupportgroup.co.uk

THE EVERYONE IS WELCOME AT
RACE FOR LIFE
NORFOLK AND SUFFOLK PEOPLE across the region are being encouraged to look beyond Lockdown by making a date to join Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life in Norfolk and Suffolk.
The charity’s much-loved events are aiming to return to Norfolk and Suffolk but with socially distanced measures to help keep participants safe. Anyone who signs up this January can claim a special 30 per cent off the entry fee by using the code JAN2021. COVID-19 has caused a devastating loss of research funding. Cancer Research UK is predicting a staggering £300 million drop in income over the next three years which could put future medical breakthroughs at risk. That’s why the charity is calling on men, women and children to fight back against the devastating disease by entering a Race for Life event. Money raised will help scientists find new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer, helping to save more lives. Every year, around 35,500 people are diagnosed with cancer in the East of England* and one in two people in the UK born after 1960 will get cancer in their lifetime.**

HEALTH & BEAUTY The Race for Life events take place across the East of England and are open to people of all ages and abilities. Emily Rowling, Cancer Research UK’s Event Manager for Norfolk, said: “All 400 massparticipation Race for Life events across the UK were cancelled last year to protect the country’s health during the COVID-19 pandemic. So this year, more than ever, we need people to come together and help beat the disease. “The truth is, COVID-19 has slowed us down. But we will never stop and we are absolutely determined to continue to create better cancer treatments for tomorrow. Every step our scientists take towards beating cancer relies on our supporters. Our Race for Life events are open to all and we’re sending a heart-felt message to everyone to come together in 2021. As always at our events, the health and safety of participants, staff and volunteers is our top priority. It may be that events look a little different this year but we are working proactively with our venues and suppliers to deliver a socially distanced but great experience.” Participants will set off on the course either alone or in small socially distanced groups. Hand sanitiser will also be provided at all events with participants encouraged to use it before and after the event. Emily explained: “Although ‘Race’ features in the name, our events are not competitive. Instead, ‘the Race for Life’ is about our doctors, nurses and scientists working as hard and fast as possible to help more people survive. We’ll ask participants to respect social distancing before, during and after the event. It means that this year people should refrain from hugging others at the finish line. But we promise our events will remain fun, colourful, emotional and uplifting.
some people, the Race for Life is literally a walk in the park. Slow and steady still wins. For others, it’s a jog or a run. But what is for certain is we’re looking forward to welcoming people across Norfolk and Suffolk back. We hope that none of our Race for Life events are cancelled in 2021 and will do everything we can to keep people safe. If we do have to cancel any of our events we will let participants know as soon as possible and they will be entitled to a refund.” Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring series of 3k, 5k, 10k, Pretty Muddy and Pretty Muddy Kids events which raise millions of pounds every year to help beat cancer by funding crucial research. This year is the 20th anniversary of Tesco’s partnership with Race for Life. Money raised through Race for Life events funds world-class research to help beat 200 types of cancer – including bowel cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer, testicular cancer, brain cancer, children’s cancers and leukaemia. Emily added: “The Race for Life is a powerful, inspirational movement which unites participants in Norfolk and Suffolk with people across the East of England and the whole of the UK. People get together and remember loved ones lost, or celebrate the lives of those who have survived. At the same time, they are helping to make a difference to people with the disease, right now. Please go to the Race for Life website, choose an event, and sign up today.” To enter, visit raceforlife.org

VALENTINES RECIPE
Main CARAMELIZED ONIONS, ROASTED EGGPLANT AND TOMATO PENNE PASTA (VEGAN & GLUTEN-FREE)
The sweetness of the onions, combined with oven roasted eggplant, and tangy homemade tomato sauce makes for the ultimate comfort Italian dish!
INGREDIENTS:
6 cups diced eggplant, ~ 1 large Italian, or Black Beauty Eggplant 1.5 large white onion, peeled, halved, and thinly sliced 1 lb. penne pasta, for gluten-free, use brown rice pasta Splash of cooking wine Olive oil Salt Freshly ground black pepper Vegan Parmesan cheese, optional For Sauce: 8 cloves garlic , minced 28 oz. can diced tomatoes 1/2 cup basil , chopped + some for garnish Crushed red pepper Olive oil Freshly ground black pepper Salt Sugar, a little if needed Prep time: 15 mins Cooking time: 40 mins Serves: 6 38 | FEBRUARY 2021
METHOD: To Prepare the Roasted Eggplant: Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Toss the diced eggplant with some olive oil (enough to coat the eggplant). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and place the eggplant in a single layer on the parchment paper. Bake for about 25 minutes until cooked and fully roasted (slightly browned, but not burned). To Make the Caramelized Onions: Heat 2-3 tbsp olive oil on a non-stick large pan on low-medium heat. Add the thinly sliced white onions and an pinch of salt, and saute until they become completely translucent, slightly brown, and just caramelized (~25 minutes). Be sure to mix frequently. If you find that the onions start sticking to the bottom of the pan or start to burn, feel free to add a little more olive oil. Once the onions are caramelized, de-glaze the pan by adding a slash of cooking wine to the pan. To Make the Sauce: Heat 3 tbsp of oil in a medium sized pot on medium heat. Add 8 cloves minced garlic and some dried red crushed peppers (more or less to taste depending on spice preference). Fry for ~30 sec. until fragrant. Be careful not to burn them. Add the can of diced tomatoes. Once the sauce is simmering, reduce the heat to low-medium and simmer uncovered for about 15-20 minutes or until the sauce thickens and reduces to about 2 cups. Add the chopped basil. Season to taste with salt, pepper, and white sugar (if needed). Cook for another 5 minutes. Turn off the heat and set aside (note: if you are almost done with the recipe, feel free to keep heating the sauce at lowest setting possible to keep the sauce hot until the pasta is ready). To Assemble the Pasta: Set a large pot of water to boil. Add a generous pinch of salt and a drizzle of olive oil. Once the water is boiling, add the penne pasta and cook al dente. Add the roasted eggplant to the de-glazed pan with caramelized onions. Add the hot tomato sauce and cooked penne pasta. Toss everything to combine. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Garnish with some freshly chopped basil. Top with some fresh Parmesan cheese (omit for vegan option), and serve hot!

This healthier 4-ingredient decadent mousse is dairy-free, rich and creamy, and easy to make!
INGREDIENTS:
METHOD:
15 oz full-fat unsweetened coconut milk
Place the can of full-fat coconut milk in the fridge overnight for at least 24 hours.
4 tbsp powdered sugar, or maple syrup
Once you are ready to whip, remove the can from the fridge without shaking it. Slowly turn it upside down, and then open the can.

40 | FEBRUARY 2021
Chill a small-medium size bowl in the freezer for a few minutes.
You will see the liquid coconut milk (the part that did not solidify) will now be at the top of the can. Slowly pour out this liquid into a bowl or cup. This coconut milk liquid is not used in this recipe, you can save it to make a green smoothie. Once you have poured out the liquid, the part that remains is the hardened coconut cream. Scoop out this coconut cream into the chilled bowl (note, do not use too large of a bowl otherwise it will be difficult to whip). Using a stand mixer or a electric hand mixer, beat until fluffy. Start on low speed and work your way up to a higher speed until you start to see stiff peaks forming. Half way through, add the sweetener, vanilla extract, and cocoa powder and continue to beat. Sprinkle with any toppings if using and serve immediately or store in the fridge in an air-tight container.

Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) Consultation: Moreton Hall The Anti-Social Behaviour Crime and Policing Act 2014 gave local authorities and police more effective powers to deal with anti-social behaviour. One of the powers is a Public Space Protection Order which can be used to regulate activities in particular public places that can have a detrimental effect on the quality of life of those in the locality. It is the Council’s responsibility to determine which behaviours are included in a PSPO providing those activities: • Have had, or are likely to have, a detrimental effect on the quality of life of those in the locality • Are, or are likely to be, persistent or continuing in nature • Are, or are likely to be, unreasonable and justify the restrictions imposed West Suffolk Council recently conducted a review of the existing PSPOs and as part of that process received a further request to consider a new PSPO for the Moreton Hall area, due to the anti-social use of motor vehicles throughout the area. Notice is hereby given that West Suffolk Council, in exercising its powers under the Anti-social Behaviour Crime and Policing Act 2014 (S.59-79), propose to consult with stakeholders, residents and businesses on implementing a PSPO, to address anti-social use of motor vehicles within the Moreton Hall ward. West Suffolk Council is proposing that the PSPO will have the following conditions: a) No person shall within the restricted area, gather in groups of two or more motor vehicles for purposes other than simply parking, which will cause or is likely to cause harassment, alarm and distress to others by performing any of the activities listed below.: • Using a motor vehicle to race or perform stunts. • Repeatedly sounding horns and/or revving engines (as to cause a public nuisance). • Playing music excessively loud (as to cause a public nuisance). • Using foul or abusive language. • Using threatening, intimidating behaviour towards another person. • Causing obstruction on a public highway, or a publicly accessible place, whether moving or stationary.” Here is a map of the location of the PSPO for information.

Forward Planning – New Season Hello and a warm (pity the weather isn’t) welcome to the Museum this month. February already and who would have thought that Covid-19 would have influenced our lives so much for nearly a year. We all at the Tower hope you have stayed safe and will continue to do so, abiding by the recommend precautions. Whilst we have to endure the shorter days and longer dark nights the Committee and volunteers have continued the plans for the new season. Yes, Sunday April the 4th will soon be with us! These projects include, as previously mentioned, the re-rendering of the Control Tower building. This will begin as early in the spring as possible, subject to the weather. Also, the proposed additional Nissen Hut has most of the ‘pieces’ ready for construction, again this is weather dependent. Great fun with a giant Jigsaw!! Our thanks go to two ‘hardy soles’ – Chris Day and his father, Peter - who have managed to find a few dry days to complete our ‘Guttering Project’ on the Radar Room. A big well done and thank you, a great job. We would also like to thank the group of sponsors who have donated the materials, thank you. The final ‘outside’ job has been the start of building (digging) a hole for our ‘Defencive’ Machine Gun Pit. Copying the standard ‘War Department’ defence

design, (the Ministry of Defence had not been established in 1939) this again will be completed for the spring. So – plenty to do, plenty to plan and about NINE weeks till our opening – doesn’t time fly when we are having fun!!! With all these projects (and other’s) a few extra voluntary ‘hands’ would be very welcome. Have you any time (been furloughed or unfortunately been made redundant) as we would love to hear from you? Specific skills would be a bonus but the enthusiasm and willingness just to help - we all chip in with the washing up – will be very gratefully appreciated. Please contact Graham or Wendy via our e-mail or call our mobile number (details below). Thanks for reading, thanks for supporting us and a big thank you to all the volunteers who give so much time, energy and effort to keep this YOUR MUSEUM operating. See you in April – It WILL be here quicker than you can ‘blink an eye’. Please put this date in your diary SUNDAY 4th April (Easter Sunday). Local film maker assists Ralph Fiennes on shoot of The Dig Screen Suffolk had the pleasure in finding Ralph Fiennes his assistant for the film The Dig. Fiennes plays Basil Brown, the archaeologist who helps discover Sutton Hoo. The Dig, which stars Carey Mulligan and Lily James and was directed by Simon Stone, and is based on the 2007 novel of the same name, it reimagines the events of the 1939 excavation of Sutton Hoo. Screen Suffolk locations used in the film include Thorpeness Beach, Shingle Street, a footpath in Snape on Suffolk Wildlife Trust land and an RSPB site called Boyton Marsh. The unit base was set up in the Snape Maltings. Fiennes was determined to nail down a true Suffolk accent so contacted Screen Suffolk to help find not only an assistant but crucially someone who also had an ear for the true Suffolk dialect. Film maker and musician Jay Ducker saw the shout out on Facebook which simply read: An actor requires an on-set assistant from mid-September to mid-November based in Suffolk and then Surrey area. Ideal opportunity for an entry level crew member. Must have a Suffolk accent.
Jay had been making short films and promos to compliment his music but had little experience on a film set but when he saw the advert a friend encouraged him to apply. ‘I remember being relatively relaxed because I honestly wasn’t expecting to get the job. I don’t have the strongest Suffolk accent and again, I had very little experience in the feature film industry. What really put me at ease was that Ralph was already using the Suffolk accent. It kind of disarmed me and made me feel as if I was speaking to a local or someone I knew really well. But what helped me get the job, I think, was that I immediately heard when and where he was going wrong with the dialect and without thinking I started correcting him in the interview. He seemed to respond well to that, and I told him my background, which was in the music industry, so I believe it was my good ear that got me the job.’ Jay’s first day was at Snape Maltings where the crew were filming their first landscape scenes of the famous Suffolk sky, reeds and beaches. The crew filmed in and around Suffolk for a week. ‘My role was to assist Ralph in getting the best possible performance. Everything from making 46 | FEBRUARY 2021
sure he was fed and watered to perfecting and correcting his Suffolk dialect.’ Jay would listen to Ralph reading scripts and suggest other ways for him to perfect the Suffolk accent. ‘There was a three-pronged approach when it came to dialect coaching with Jamie Matthewman being the overall guidance for all the actors, Charlie Haylock specifically zooming in on the Suffolk dialects, particularly with Ralph and myself being the everyday reference point. I think all our differing approaches really complemented each other.’ Jay is still in touch with Ralph as well as many other crew members. ‘The camaraderie amongst the crew, was the best thing about being on set, for sure. There’s a real sense of togetherness when you’re cold, tired and in the mud together. You really pull on that to get you through.’ He certainly made the most of the opportunity and gained praise from Ralph himself who said of him. ‘Jay Ducker gave me a lot of support and help during the shoot of The Dig. I requested from Screen Suffolk an assistant on set who was from Suffolk - someone I could practice my Suffolk accent with. Jay adapted very quickly to the grueling filming
hours and really impressed me with his spirit of commitment and dedication. He worked really hard.’ Since the film wrapped at the end of 2019 Jay has been continuing to make music under the name of ‘Skinny Rodgers’ and has also had film-making commissions under his Middle Sea Media business. With regards to the future, as with everyone 2020 has been a strange one and Covid-19 has kept Jay away from film sets but he’s been left with a ‘deep appreciation’ of the experience. ‘It was definitely character-building, and I know a lot of people would have killed for my position so I’m very grateful for the opportunity. A friend of mine has written this fantastic script which is based in Suffolk and it happens to be about my great ancestor John Ducker who was the last man to be publicly hung in Ipswich. Our hopes are to turn it into a feature film and help bring more film making to Suffolk. Screen Suffolk are looking forward to helping find locations for that film at some point in the not-toodistant future! The Dig will be available to watch on Netflix from 29th January.

It’s the season of love and so this months’ make is all about that. Paper plate love birds. Why not make a couple and post to your best friend or someone you love…
YOU WILL NEED:
white paper plate, felt tip pens in a range of colours, pipe cleaner for the feet, heart stickers (or use a heart stamp), glue stick and hole reinforcer stickers. n Place the paper plates on top of each other so insides are facing n Cut the paper plates together as per picture creating a bird, wing
and beak shape out of both plates at the same time n Colour in the bird shape and heart opposite colours n Colour the beak in yellow n Punch out of the remaining plate some heart shapes and colour in opposite colours ie blue on pink and pink on blue n Make a fold in the lower half of the heart shape to create the wing n Attach the wing to the love bird with glue stick n Stick the beak in place and stick hole reinforcer for an eye and colour pupil in black n Make up pipe cleaner feet and glue in place.
Try making lots of them in all different colours and using them as place names for a special Valentine day meal. 48 | FEBRUARY 2021

FEBRUARY’S IDEAS TO HELP YOU SAVE ON ELECTRICITY BILLS
S
o here we are again in another lockdown. Don’t think that came as a surprise. At least there is some hope on the horizon as the vaccination program starts to role out. Anyway enough of that. If you are anything like me I bet your electric bills have risen substantially over the winter period. Not surprising with the extra time we are all spending at home. This month we will remind you of all kinds of things you can do to reduce electricity consumption to save money and reduce your carbon dioxide footprint.
1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Only boil enough water in your kettle for your immediate requirements. Overfilling means you are wasting energy and money. a) Reduce energy costs when cooking by turning your oven off before the end of the cooking time. Provided you don’t open the door, it will stay at the same temperature for 10 minutes b) Use a slow cooker instead of an oven c) Choose the right size of ring for the pan. d) Keep your oven door closed while you’re cooking (opening it loses up to 20% of the heat). Use dishwashers and washing machines on their most economical settings. You may have to look this up in the instruction manual. Always remember to fill your machine, there is no point in washing fresh air. If you dry clothes using a tumble dryer, try and use it as little as possible, they cost a bomb to run. Minimise your time in the shower they are very expensive to run.
Finally, make it a habit to turn off lights when they are not required, what is the point of illuminating a room with no one in it. You would be surprised how much this can cost over a year.
Good luck and happy saving. Remember for every kWh of electricity you save you are also saving about 18 pence and 470g CO2
We also have loads of ideas at ecofrenzy.com to help you save money by making small life-style changes.

Bury St. Edmunds CRICKET CLUB Bury St Edmunds Cricket Club look forward to the 2021 season and can reflect on a number of players who have developed their cricket at the club and go on to greater things. An example is Josh Davey who first learnt his cricket at South Lee School, practicing in the outdoor nets at the Victory Sports Ground under the supervision of the school’s sports staff. Josh’s sporting talent won him a scholarship to Culford School from where he also played for Bury St Edmunds in the East Anglian Premier League. His displays earned a call up for Suffolk and obvious cricket talent attracted Middlesex where he made his first class debut aged 19. In 2013 aged 22 he moved to Somerset where his career progressed both with the county and Scotland having been born in Aberdeen. He produced some excellent displays in the 2015 World cup scoring 53 not out and taking 6.28 against Afghanistan. He has played for Scotland also in T 20 internationals. Josh played for Somerset in 2019 when they won the Royal London One Day Cup taking vital wickets in the final and a total of 14 in the competition. Last season he played in the Bob Willis Cup Final losing to Essex in the final. With junior cricket coaching taking place in 2021 we hope to find the next Josh Davey.
For future bookings of our pavilion, please contact Rosie Nunn on 07885040039 or rosemary.nunn@hotmail.com Hopefully our coaching sessions will commence soon, please contact club President David Barker on david@ejbarker.co.uk to find out more

Christ Church
MORETON HALL Once again I find myself writing in the middle of a lockdown. Once again I, like everyone else, do not know when this lockdown will end. I know many people appreciate coming to church to worship Jesus and to have a change of scene from their own home and therefore it was a very difficult decision to close the church on 10th January for the foreseeable future. However, it is more important that the congregation and the community come through Covid-19 intact rather than that a particular building remains open. Therefore, the church building will only be opened as soon as it is safe to do so. In the meantime our morning services are broadcast live on Facebook every Sunday morning for those who would like to join in at home. One of the dominant feelings on the estate at the moment is that of frustration. The rules do not seem to be working. More people seem to be flouting them. Those of us who are trying our best to keep them and, thereby, ourselves and others safe, find the rising numbers of infections and deaths very discouraging. What should we do? 17th February marks the beginning of Lent. This is a season of preparation for Easter. During this time Christians do two things, one of which is that they go without things they think are essential so that when the joy of Easter arrives and their
fast is over, they can appreciate it all the more. It also reflects the tradition that Jesus went into the wilderness for forty days and forty nights to prepare himself for the full-on ministry that the Father was about to give Him. If we can see that going without things we have deemed to be essential can help us truly appreciate the value of those things, then Jesus has taught us an important lesson. When this is all over, and one day it will be all over, surely then we will appreciate the presence of our friends and families; the joy of sharing food together; the freedom to go where we like when we like; to enjoy the outdoors with the birds, flowers and trees in the company of our friends; to buy what we want when we want and with whom we want. As all these things we have taken for granted have now been taken away from us we appreciate the value of them. Therefore, as we continue through this difficult time of frustration may we learn some important lessons. One, as the Father was with Jesus in the
wilderness so He is with us. Two, we are learning the true value of things – the value of solitude and the value of friendship; the value of togetherness and the value of community; the value of acting sensibly and of not letting frustrations and other things overpower us. There will always be people who never listen to these lessons, but isn’t it good that we have listened and helped as much as we could? When it is all over and we can go back to ‘normal’, whatever that will be, let us really thank Jesus for all the good things we have. Let us also give thanks for all the people who have kept the shops open, cleaned the roads, collected the rubbish and, above all, served in all the caring services of the NHS. We are still a very blessed and fortunate country having all the facilities we do.
With every good wish
and prayers for your health and wellbeing, Revd. Canon Jonathan Ford. Minister Christ Church Moreton Hall

YOUR LOCAL CHURCH IN THE COMMUNITY CENTRE As we face an uncertain start to the New Year, may you be blessed and filled with hope. Christmas and the past few months have been so challenging, being kept apart from our loved ones. Many of us have experienced deep loss and loneliness and we will need to face restrictions for the next few weeks or months, at least, in order to protect those around us. It can be hard to know how to respond after such a tough time – especially in the New Year which, traditionally, has been about looking ahead and making hopeful plans and resolutions for the future. We encourage you to hold onto hope to have faith that, this year, God will still be with you and working around the world in wonderful ways. There is no lockdown on ‘just happening’ to meet the person he’s put on your heart in the supermarket aisle, or on him healing a friend sixty miles away, or giving you the right word (you know it was him) for a colleague on a call, or strengthening you for another day in the home classroom, the same room, the Zoom room. There is no lockdown on a ‘thank you’ note on top of the bins, on a friendly nod to a stranger passing two metres away, on a text to a friend, on lingering after the screen meeting to listen to a colleague, on reading the Bible with a seeker before the start of a workday, on leaving a meal, a cake, a Kit-Kat on a doorstep, on inviting a friend/neighbour to a Zoom service, to a bunch of flowers outside your front door, to online charades…. We may not be able to gather in our church buildings but we are still God’s people with a mission in his world. There is no lockdown on prayer. We may not be able to go to our friend, our family, our neighbour, our boss, but are not the Lord’s ears open? Is there any mask-muffled, visor-buffered whisper he cannot hear? Has his arm grown shorter? Or his heart less tender? Is he not always near? Does he not still speak through his word? Send his angels? Is there any wall he cannot walk through? Any place barred to his Spirit? And, in our grieving, our anxiety, bewilderment, depression, weariness, loneliness, is it not still true that he is the fastest way to hope? Each year our Church has a short key Bible passage to guide us: this year it is Romans 12:12 – Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying ! (NLT) Alongside many other churches in national lockdown, we have decided to suspend our planned service for January in the Community Centre, but will keep the situation under regular review. You are very welcome to join us each Sunday morning on Zoom. Please ask if you would like to receive our weekly service and notice sheet which can be emailed to you or even put in the post. We have regular weekly sessions online for all young people from toddlers to teenagers. See all the details on our website. If you would like us to pray for you in any way, let us know confidentially. Bless everyone in the community we seek to serve.

Moreton Hall resident writes his first Childrens Book in Lockdown First time author, Glen Blackwell, who is based on the Moreton Hall has just released his first children’s book – We’re Moving Where?! Published in December he said he got the idea for writing this book after helping his children with their home schooling during the first lockdown last year. “I’ve always enjoyed reading to my children and love the fact that books give you a real chance for escapism” He says. “We’re Moving Where?! tells the story of Harry, a boy whose parents reveal that they are moving to a cabin in the Canadian wilderness to become wildlife rangers. Harry’s first thought is about leaving his friends behind but then finds out that there will be NO INTERNET!!! I think the story hits a lot of very topical themes right now – the importance of family, anxiety around change and how important technology is to all aspects of our lives.” You can visit Glens website at www.glenblackwell.com and the book is available to buy on Amazon.co.uk for only £4.99.

B U L C D R A C T S O P This item has been submitted by our member, Avril Smith, together with an example of a recipe postcard from her collection. I collect several different subjects on postcards, one of which is recipes. I have selected this Rhubarb Charlotte postcard promoting Bird’s Custard Powder as an example. Many recipe cards, like this one, are advertising cards, but others promote an area or place. British cards are mostly for regional specialities such as Cornish Pasties, Welsh Bara Brith, Scottish Haggis and Irish Soda Bread. There are several series of modern cards from areas such as the Lake District, Yorkshire, and Lancashire. Other countries which produce recipe cards in quantity are France and the USA, again showing regional delights. Some collectors only focus on old postcards, but I love the modern ones too. They tend to be cheaper to buy and therefore are more accessible to the new collector.
