Wishing you all a much happier new year, I’m sure we’re all hoping it will be a better one than last year! We hope you enjoy this months issue of the Directory, with our recipes on pages 36 and 38, and ladies winter fashion on pages 62-63 to get us looking fabulous in the chilly months ahead. Hopefully we can start bringing you regular theatre and film updates soon too. On page 50 we have a crossword and sudoku page just for fun! We all missed so many events and such a lot of fun in 2020 so what better way to start this year than to sign up to our third My WiSH Charity Soapbox Challenge on 4th Sponsored by September. We hope that when you read this, we are back open and welcoming all our members back into the club room here at Moreton Hall Community Centre along with all our regular groups and clubs using the hall on a weekly basis but with a new year starting we have exciting news as January looks all set for the long awaited start on our extension to the community centre, this will be at front of building, this will give the centre a main library for the public to use, also increasing the already established post office size so that it can work more productively in busy times, and we our excited to get a brand new office built for our centre manager to work in. Building works plan to take about 3 to 4 months but the post office will always remain open and the centre will hopefully be open as well, abiding to current covid 19 restrictions. We will also be renewing all the old wooden windows and doors and replacing them with new double glazed units, and also installing a new heating system that will mean removing the old, out of date system. We plan to keep the community centre open during all of these works by moving our groups & clubs around to different rooms etc when needed. You are still able to able to make bookings the normal way by email or by telephone, if our phone is not answered, always leave a message and someone will contact you as soon as possible. We are looking forward to a better year in 2021 when we can welcome you all back to the community centre and club room with all of our new facilities and building done, making it a great place for the people of Moreton Hall to use and an even better place to serve the community with a new main library to be used without having to go into town, oh, and remember, we also offer free parking for up to three hours. TW BUILDING HERITAGE
L COMMUNITY It may have been a year to forget but at Southgate it ended with a hugely positive and optimistic community feel-good glow. Thanks to generous funding from our fantastically supportive local councillors Patrick Chung and Ann Williamson we were able to wrap the Centre in 99 meters of sparkling colourful Christmas lights to welcome the festive season. Jessica Rudd’s (Pictured with son Hunter, top far left) Light Trail was a brilliant success, so good to see so many children enjoying the Christmas light show, especially eye-catching was Mike and Nikki Graham with children Annie, Dillon and Sofia outside their Caie Walk home. Another landmark was the first Church service at the Centre since March celebrating the gift of light, and heralding the most spectacular light display designed and created by Kelvin Johnson and Dad Harvey with Alison Burgess. Finally the inspiration again of our local councillors, the Centre opened for a Food Store, donations of food to be distributed to the needy, the generosity and benevolence of our brilliant local community was simply incredible, so much donated by so many was really quite humbling, a large donation by the Lions Club of Bury St Edmunds was made by Keith Nuttall which will help all those suffering hardship into the New Year.
Let us all hope for a bright and hopeful New Year!

https://moretonhallresidents.wordpress.com/ May we wish all residents a Healthy and a Happy New Year and extend a warm welcome to those residents who have recently moved here. Firstly, we would like to thank those people who have served the community, from front-line health workers, care workers, emergency services, postal workers, to delivery drivers who have kept us in touch with the outside world. We must also thank the many others in the supply chains, manufacturing, and farming, to the local Councils and the volunteers who have ensured that the sick and vulnerable were kept supplied with essentials. Our Residents Association like many others was formed out of a need to deal with a problem which affected the entire estate, poor infrastructure to support increased building. Other issues have appeared, over time, but these have been dealt with using good connections to our locally elected bodies. 18 | JANUARY 2021
In these difficult times when physical meetings are impossible, we have tried virtual meetings, but technology has meant that only a few online meetings have been held. We had to cancel our AGM and deal with matters on an ad-hoc basis. We will, when social distancing permits, organise a delayed AGM to confirm and possibly add to our committee, and set the frequency and times of meetings. In the meanwhile, please do not hesitate to contact us if you would like to join our committee or have any issues we can help with, on our web site as above, or at secretarymhra@gmail.com Some ongoing things will be on our agenda for this year, such as the underpass decoration. Air quality and HGV movement, litter, and antisocial behaviour. Cliff Hind, Chairman MHRA E cliffhind2001@yahoo.co.uk

What’s been happening at...
HARDWICK Primary School As we welcome in a New Year with hope and optimism we hope that 2021 will make up for the hugely challenging year we say goodbye to . Our montage looks back on how we celebrated Christmas at Hardwick, each year and class filming a Christmas show and concert so parents and carers could share in the festive spirit by watching the videos. It was so important to rejoice in Christmas even if the usual school celebrations could not take place, we still had Christmas dinner day and our jumper day raised £190 for Save the Children. We hope all our fantastic pupils and their families had a wonderful Christmas and we start the Spring term with confidence and expectation.

ABBOTS GREEN ACADEMY Special Delivery
At Abbots Green, we pride ourselves in having a really strong vision and ethos which is centred around our rainbow values. We are always looking for extra opportunities for our children to experience. When we were offered the opportunity to be involved in a project with Suffolk Artlink, we jumped at the chance! ‘Special Delivery’ brought different generations together to explore the art of communication through letters and other documents held in Suffolk Record Offices and museums.
The individuals behind the letters were brought to life through a series of participatory creative programmes delivered by a team of artists, including theatre-makers, creative writers, visual and digital artists. The group of Year 6 children were able to investigate historical approaches to letter-writing, consider them in the light of current methods of communication and share significant correspondence of their own.
Special Delivery began in September 2020 and was delivered with support from the Theatre Royal Act Your Age theatre group. Due to Covid 19, the sessions were delivered via Zoom, and materials – including archive boxes, specialist writing pens and other preservationgrade equipment – were posted weekly to the children, which really did make it a very Special Delivery. The children were so excited to receive and send letters. This was a unique, extra-curricular opportunity for our children which they thoroughly immersed themselves in. Even though the sessions have come to an end, we have plans to share the children’s learning, and continue the project within school. Watch this space!

This month at Evergreen we have been using our senses to enjoy the winter season! Whilst it has been much colder outside, we have not let this stop us spending time in amongst the Evergreen woodlands. With frost and ice around us, the children have been making observations as they play. Within the nursery environment we encourage our children to be explorers. This month the children have been collecting ice and snow to consider where this has come from and how this disappears throughout the day. Within our Evergreen setting we embrace any form of learning as an opportunity. With such little fingers, and as we develop our strength to manipulate writing tools, we have loved representing our exploration on a big scale! It is hugely important, as our Evergreen vision grows, that we celebrate our children as early writers as well as explorers of the world around them. At the end of any session outside it has been fantastic for our explorers to come into the warm cosy nursery environment for a hot home cooked meal by our Evergreen Cook, Mary Mills. The home from home approach to Evergreen is one that we are incredibly proud of and welcome any family to visit!

THE COLOUR OF BLUE TITS
W
hat colour are blue tits? This might seem a silly question; blue tits are one of the commonest birds on Moreton Hall and most of us are familiar with their blue head, white face with a black stripe, and yellow chest. When they come to our bird feeders, hunt for caterpillars on our bushes, or perch on tree branches, they are pretty unmistakable. Blue tits all look the same to us, but they see each other in a different light – literally. Blue tits, like many other birds, can see ultraviolet light invisible to us. Their blue heads look much brighter in ultraviolet than in the wavelengths of light that we can see.
Knowing who’s in your territory is important, and intruders can be seen a long way off. The brightness of the blue also helps with choosing a mate, and pairs of blue tits tend to have similarly bright blue heads. Choosing a mate who’s fairly like you means a likely good mate. Within that choice of partners is a second colour choice, and that’s the yellow chest. The yellow pigment in the chest feathers comes from the caterpillars it eats. When a blue tit’s feathers are growing, the more caterpillars it eats the more yellow pigment it gets and so its chest gets yellower.
So a blue tit with an intensely yellow chest is advertising its past history of being a great caterpillar hunter, and so will be able to feed a large brood of chicks. These birds will be the most sought-after birds in the courtship process. As winter progresses, blue tits are in a battle for survival; there are few insects for them to eat. Back in autumn they fed feed heavily but like other small birds they can’t store enough fat to keep them going through winter. Feeding birds in the garden does significantly increase winter survival.

NEWS
HAPPY 2021 EVERYONE!
It was mid December when I wrote this article, the day after a busy and exciting day on Saturday 12th. In the morning Patrick and I were at Southgate Community Centre collecting donations for the food cupboard to help those in need over Christmas and beyond. We were absolutely amazed by the generosity of the residents in Southgate Ward and as one resident said, this could happen to any one of us.
CHRISTMAS LIGHTS TRAIL
Earlier that week we received a very generous and unexpected donation of ÂŁ250 from the Bury Lions to support the needs of the less fortunate in our community.
Christmas Lights Trail
The same evening saw the Christmas Lights Trail, organised by Jessica Rudd. After such a difficult year for everyone it was brilliant to see so many families out on a cold and damp evening enjoying seeing dozens of houses covered in lights. For the first time the Community Centre and Southgate Church were lit and looked spectacular.
A BIG THANK YOU! This year Jess has organised The Zoo Trail, The Around The World Trail and the Christmas Lights Trail. I know how much these events have been enjoyed by young and old alike, so thank you Jess for giving up so much of your time for us.
We are truly hoping that 2021 will bring more light than dark to everyone but if you or anyone you know, neighbour or family member, are struggling to make ends meet, we are able to help - please contact us and it will be treated in the strictest confidence.

MORETON HALL NEWS... from Peter Thompson, Mayor

Uni-Cycle
One of the first communications I had as a councillor in Bury St Edmunds was from West Suffolk Wheelers, way back in 2012. It was concerning the cycle path down Symonds Rd. This is shared with a pavement and it had become unclear who should use which area, especially during winter leaf fall. I’m pleased to say after years of complaining we have at least had a portion of it repainted.
Bi-Cycle
In more cycle news, I have been contacted this month by several residents about use of roads by our local cyclists. As more bikes hit the road as we hit peak fitness season to burn off those Xmas dinners, it is important to highlight road safety. One resident asked if it was possible to pass some by-laws related to cycling, however this isn’t practical or reasonably possible at present. I would say, please check if the road section you are on has an adjacent cycle path - much of Moreton Hall does - and use it, especially if you are going uphill or are slow moving. Please stay safe out there, keep an eye out if you are driving and be courteous if you are cycling. I know 99% of us do.
Tri-Cycle
...or “The Case of the Disappearing Cycle Path”. In the picture, you may be able to just make out a green smear on the floor. Those of you who have lived in the area at least as long as I have will remember that we used to have a clearly defined and designated cycle path along Lawson Place, from Symonds Rd up to the pub entrance. That is still officially mapped as a cycle path, however it is completely unclear to drivers and has almost no designation. I am challenging Suffolk County Council and Highways to reinstate this as a proper path as they have completely denigrated their duty to maintain that area. I have witnessed several near misses recently. 28 | JANUARY 2021
Community Centre
At time of writing, I still need Town Council members to vote it through, but this month I have been working with Nigel at the community centre to inject some capital funds into renovations. You will know that Nigel and the team work tirelessly to run the centre and it has always been prudently operated without the need for outside support. With Covid hitting all businesses which rely on people coming together, some of the much needed renovations have been impacted, so we have put together a plan to inject £20k into the projects. Let’s hope this comes to fruition this month.
Besp-Oak Project
In a wider and more long term project, we saw pupils from the Priory collect acorns in the autumn. This will be part of a wider Covid project where we will see oak trees grown from seed (nut?) to sapling stage and then planted around Moreton Hall. Leon from the Youth Centre has kindly coordinated contact and funding. One oak will certainly replace our fallen tree on Ten Acre Field and we may see some carpentry involved as I have been seeking a bench around that area to break up the walk up the steep hill for our less mobile residents.
CALL OUT TO ARTISTS
The underpass has been an ongoing project by the Resident’s Association for several years and may finally be coming to conclusion. Speaking with one of our officers this week, we are at a point where we will be reaching out to local artists to give their interpretation of what it means to live in Moreton Hall. I’d love to see a range, from Early Years school children up to elderly artists in order to represent our diverse community. Perhaps Syko may wish to be involved?
Rocky and a Hard Place...
...and a thin covering of protective epoxy. Yes, we have imminent news on Rocky the Covid snake. January should see some good news in the installation of the rock snake which lots of our young ones participated in during lockdown and the summer holidays. It has taken a while, mainly due to ironing out issues with siting, but I have cleared the funds this week to finalise it. Some good news for the new year.

LSS wishes all Directory readers and the Directory Team a Happy New Year! January 2021 begins with the Covid-19 vaccine being rolled out, so good news to start 2021 with. It will be a while yet before we can resume doing what we regarded as just normal things but it’s a very positive step forward.
Skin care is important all year round…. During this cooler time of year, with the wearing of more layers and the central heating on, looking after and protecting your skin is a very important way of preventing injury and infection at any time of the year. Any break in the skin can make it more likely to get an infection there. Lymphoedema can cause your skin to become dry and itchy, making cracks and breaks more likely. This can increase the risk of infection but can usually be prevented by moisturising often. You can buy moisturising creams from your local chemist or possibly get them on prescription from your doctor. Your lymphoedema specialist can suggest which creams might be best for you. Useful hints and tips: Keep your skin clean and dry. Use soap-free cleansers that don’t dry your skin. Wash with warm water every day. Carefully dry in between fingers or toes of the limb that is at risk of lymphoedema to prevent fungal infections. Moisturise gently every day with an unperfumed cream or oil to help your skin stay in good condition. When applying moisturiser, the last stroke should be downwards (in the direction of hair growth) to prevent the moisturiser blocking the hair follicles

HEALTH & BEAUTY
A warm welcome to you all in this new year. We look forward in anticipation that the year progresses with more positives to lift our spirits and to bring us more into the light and our days more fulfilling. The groups success is very much dependent on keeping in touch. Remember the group is for patients, by patients and you can be involved as little or as much as you are able, we welcome any contributions you may have to keep the group running. Please do feel free to contact us at any time. You will be made very welcome. Do you experience chronic pain? Would you like to meet others who experience chronic pain? Then come along to one of our meetings. This was one part of our mantra in the beginning and we hope that this year we will be able to welcome you to our support group meetings as soon as it is safe to do so. Enabling you to minimise the impact of chronic pain on every day life can be very challenging in itself and it can carry negative emotions especially if you feel your having to do it alone. We can construct many barriers when in pain instead of thinking of ways that might help manage the pain. Pain sufferers can feel unsupported, that is where a support group is vital. During these unprecedented times support is invaluable as chronic pain is extremely challenging for those who have it and effective approaches have been elusive. Building good relationships, having a caring attitude, being listened to, having a desire to overcome and positive momentums can certainly be found within the Challenge Group. These building blocks have gained foundation since this group was formatted and having this support network is a constant in these people’s lives every day and knowing someone is there for you who understands is a powerful tool in helping you to cope and get through the day. Pain can take everything away from you and life can become very dark and isolated. There is hope and techniques available to help prevent the dark times getting darker and with a little bit of effort you can learn to move forward, one moment at a time. Enquiries by email please to info@chronicpainsupportgroup.co.uk www.chronicpainsupportgroup.co.uk 32 | JANUARY 2021

Get Healthy Resolutions for th
No Dieting Required! 2. 1. Replace Your Snacks Prep Healthy Lunches and Dinners at Home Sunday through Thursday
When you cook at home (or pack up your lunch), it’s easier to eat better because you have full control over what’s served and how it’s made. This particular goal leaves you some flexibility to eat out on the weekends, or grab lunch with your colleagues on a Friday (of course, you can modify the days of the week to match your personal schedule). Make sure you’re including a lean protein and plenty of vegetables at each meal.
34 | JANUARY 2021
With Whole foods
The word snack tends to be synonymous with packaged foods, which are typically higher in sugar, salt, and unhealthy fat than unprocessed or minimally processed foods. Rather than nibbling on biscuits, crackers, crisps, and nutritional bars (even the healthier brands), reach for whole food alternatives like a piece of fruit, a handful of nuts, yoghurt, or cut veggies with or without a healthy dip. These snacks are more nutritious and more filling than most packaged snacks.
HEALTH & BEAUTY
or the New Year! 3.
Make Vegetables a Top Priority in 2021 If you struggle with eating enough produce, this is the ideal issue to target in the new year. A simple starter goal is to add at least 1 portion of veggies to lunch and 2 portions to dinner. At lunch, supplement your usual sandwich or soup with a cup of baby carrots or bell pepper strips or a side salad. At dinner, pile on the roasted, sautéed, or steamed veggies. Some of our favorites are sautéed spinach, roasted cauliflower or parsnips, baked sweet potatoes, and steamed broccoli or green beans.
Do you look after a Partner, Relative, Friend or Neighbour? Do you feel isolated or need someone to listen?
You’re not alone. We can help. We offer a range of free services, information and advice to anyone, of any age, who is looking after someone with an illness, disability or age related condition, who could not manage alone. Suffolk Family Carers GP Advisor, Tracy Alexander, will be at MOUNT FARM GP SURGERY on the 1st Thursday of every month, to provide information, guidance and emotional support.
Telephone: 01473 835407 Email: healthteam@suffolkfamilycarers.org
4.
Create a Healthier Default for Your Least Healthy Habit
Zero in on the one eating pattern that tends to do the most damage to your diet (and has the most excess calories). Is it late-night eating, alcohol, your daily coffee shop visits, huge portions at dinner, lavish restaurant meals, or a stubborn sweet tooth? Now, create a plan to solve that particular issue. If you love dessert, maybe your plan is to have fresh fruit with whipped cream six days a week, and a special treat on the seventh day. If pastries and coffee drinks are costing you hundreds of calories a day, change your daily order to a skim latte and a banana. Consider this nutrition triage — by targeting your worst food habit, you’ll have a significant impact on your overall diet, while causing minimal disruption to your routine.

CHARRED CAULIFLOWER, LEMON & CAPER ORZO
RECIPE
m Make this easy orzo and cauliflower dish in just 25 minutes. It serves one for a main meal, plus there’s leftovers to enjoy for lunch the next day Preparation time: 5 mins Cooking time: 20 mins Serves: 1-2
INGREDIENTS:
½ cauliflower , broken into florets, stalk chopped into cubes 2 tsp olive oil 100g orzo 2 tsp capers , drained and rinsed 1 small garlic clove , sliced ½ lemon , zested and juiced 100ml low-salt vegetable stock (check it’s vegan, if required) handful of rocket leaves or similar greens, to serve
36 | JANUARY 2021
METHOD:
Heat the grill to high. Toss the cauliflower with half the oil and some seasoning. Tip onto a baking tray and grill for 15-20 mins until golden, charred, and tender all the way through. Meanwhile, cook the orzo in a pan of boiling salted water for 8 mins, or until al dente. Drain. Heat the remaining oil in a frying pan and sizzle the capers and garlic until golden. Stir in the orzo, cauliflower, lemon zest and juice and the stock. Bubble for 1 min, then spoon half into a bowl and top with the rocket. Leave the leftovers to cool for the lunchbox.

LEMON PUDDING This is a family favourite. The top is light and fluffy, almost like a soufflĂŠ, while the bottom is a delectable lemony sauce. I like it served chilled.
INGREDIENTS: 4 eggs, separated
5 tablespoons lemon juice 1 teaspoon lemon zest 30g (1 oz) butter, softened 300g (11 oz) caster sugar 4 tablespoons plain flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 350ml (12 fl oz) semi skimmed milk
METHOD:
RECIPE Prep time: 20 mins Cooking time: 40 mins Serves: 12
Beat together egg yolks, lemon juice, lemon zest and butter until thick. Combine sugar, flour and salt; add alternately with milk to the yolk mixture, beating well after each addition. Bake at 180 C / Gas mark 4 for 45 minutes.

Happy New Year So Welcome 2021. May it bring good health, wealth and happiness to you all. I think we are all wishing for a much better year than 2020.
On the 13th of December we commemorated the departures memorial – where we acknowledge the commitment, dedication and sacrifice made by all those who served on the airfield. The short service was attended by a few members and guests as a wreath and crosses were laid at the memorial. On a grey, wet morning the rain stopped and the sun popped out for the time we wereAll outside. It is a great honour for us at Electrical Work Undertaken the museum to remember all those who gave so Call Lee on: much.

The museum has survived and projects for the new season are already developing. The new season will begin on Sunday 4th April – yes Easter Sunday (eggs may be in the shops already!!). If Covid-19 restrictions continue, we will still be able to provide a safe environment for visitors. You will all be very welcome. (by the Moreton Hall shops). The crash of this B-17 happened on January 6th 1945 and we will remember those that died on the 6th this month.

JANUARY’S POST CHRISTMAS ECO IDEAS
H
ello everyone, I hope you all had a great Christmas with your nearest and dearest. I am sure you are all welcoming 2021 with thoughts that maybe we can return to some kind of normal in the near future. Fingers crossed. This month we are having a quick look at environmentally sensible thinks you can do with all the Christmas stuff you have just accumulated.
1.
If you have received a deluge of Christmas cards, then please recycle them or make use of them for next year. Cut out the best part from cards and use them as tags or if you are a real eco warrior cover the writing inside and send them to someone else next Christmas.
2. 3. 4.
There was a surge of people buying real Christmas trees in 2020. If you are one of them please compost it responsibly of if you have one with roots find a suitable spot to plant it. We need to grow more trees and this could be the start of your own little forest.
We have looked at fast fashion in previous articles but now is a good time to revisit the problem. Many of us receive unwanted clothing gifts at Christmas which may end up in the bin. Try passing them on to someone who may appreciate the style, or return them to shops or take them to a charity shop (COVID regs. allowing). Also keep your Christmas jumpers and hats for next year. If you are anything like our family we end up with a whole pile of food stuffs that are bought just once a year for Christmas. This includes chutneys, pickles, sauces, dates etc, most are left surplus to requirement and they go to waste. This year try to keep them and find ways to incorporate them in your everyday meals.
5.
Last month we looked at eco decorations such as orange slices, chilli strings, pine cones, and biscuits. Congratulations if you had a go and I hope you can all make use of them in the new year. I certainly will with these beautiful red tubes of fire seen in the photo.
Happy New Year from Ecofrenzy We also have loads of ideas at ecofrenzy.com to help you save money by making small life-style changes.

Christ Church
MORETON HALL I hope you had a really wonderful Christmas. I know we did and it will be for me one of the best Christmases I ever had. Thank you to everyone who supported our Shoebox appeal. Thanks to you generosity 323 boxes where collected and sent to children overseas. Many more of you did your box online so the final total is much higher. January is normally the season of Epiphany in the church calendar. Epiphany means new understanding or revelation and it concerns the coming of the kings. I want you to imagine what it must have been like to be Mary that day. Suddenly there appear at least three foreign people from outside not only Israel but the Roman Empire itself, bearing strange gifts and probably not speaking your language. They do not want to see you or your husband; they just want to see your new baby. They not just look at him; they worship him and offer him some of the most expensive gifts you are ever likely to see. Each one worth more than several years what your husband could earn. What would you make of it? In Britain we are very conscious of social embarrassment. I think Mary, if she was British, would have been very embarrassed and probably quite annoyed. Yet, these strangers were telling her and the rest of the world something that we need to rediscover. That something is how important Jesus Christ is. He can make such a significant difference to your life now and a
huge difference to your eternal destination. That is why He is the most important person who has ever lived. Even today He can have more impact on a person, a family, a town, a city, a country and a culture than anyone else. Even though the church has been talking about this for over two thousand years and hundreds of millions of people have got the message, Jesus is still a figure of mystery for so many. It is my prayer for you that as we begin a New Year, full of all its uncertainties, and probably filled with broken promises, you open your eyes and see the true significance of Jesus, and what He can do for you. He will never let you down. He alone can mend your broken heart and heal any and every wound you have. More importantly, He can forgive you for all the bad things you have done, either intentionally or by accident, to other people.
He can truly set you free from your past and give you a golden future. As we begin a new season in the church we will be holding another Alpha course on Zoom. Please watch the church website for details https://www.ccmh.org.uk/ In an Alpha course you will not only learn about Jesus, you get to meet Him through prayer and the presence of the Holy Spirit. Why not open your eyes and take the chance and find out what Jesus can do for you? It is the best New Year resolution you could make because, if you follow it through sincerely, the consequences are In Church (Book via booking@ccmh.org.uk) truly you will And life Livechanging stream via and Facebook (www.facebook.com/ never be let ChristChurchMoretonHall) down by Him.

YOUR LOCAL CHURCH IN THE COMMUNITY CENTRE
Faith in Action
We have been supporting this very small Christian charity based in Sussex for a number of years. It works with some of the poorest people in the world, primarily in Malawi, but also in Mozambique, and Zimbabwe. It supports the ministry of local churches in Africa by providing resources to communities to help themselves, as well as sending relief consignments. Specifically it has funded wells and irrigation systems, solar power, supports orphans, and provides funds for mosquito nets which local people produce. Recently it has also sent money to buy buckets, bars of soap and masks, preventing the spread of Covid 19 to keep communities safe. The provision of Christian resources in local languages and strengthening the work of local pastors is an important part of its mission. It has sent over £1 million worth of aid since 1990 – a real achievement for an organisation that employs no staff! Our longest member, Frank Rumball, is a trustee of the charity and has visited Malawi on a number of occasions. Very recently, Faith in Action has been supporting people who live around a rubbish dump just outside Blantyre by providing them all with a Christmas meal as well as helping five people to set up a grocery business also dealing in second hand clothes. Why Faith in Action? The book of James in the Bible says: “What good is it ... if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? ... faith by itself if not accompanied by action is dead.”

More information on the work of Faith in Action can be found at www.faithinaction.uk.com or by ringing 01293 886596. We are delighted to announce the appointment of Rev Mike Simm as the new minister of Southgate Church. With his wife, Sarah, he will be joining us just after Easter. Mike is currently the Minister of Cliff Park Community Church in Gorleston, Norfolk, and is an Anglican by denominational background. More to follow! Just before Christmas, we held our first service back in the Community Centre coinciding with the highly successful Lights Trail. The next service is scheduled to take place during January – check our website for further details. We wish you all a New year full of hope.

Is Teaching for You?
Many of us can identify significant teachers who have had a real impact on the people we have become. They may have inspired love of a particular subject, helped us to develop essential skills or grasp life-changing ideas or, through encouragement and faith, given us the confidence to believe in ourselves. Certainly, most teachers are motivated by the desire to ‘make a difference’ to the children and young people. Teaching is a tremendously creative job. Finding out about the children in your class, and learning how best to motivate and engage them, helps you to bring the curriculum alive for your pupils. Schools are very special communities. As teachers, we don’t only work with children but also with parents and carers. It is so fulfilling to touch the lives of local families, building those relationships which may influence the development of a child for years to come. I can honestly say that I have had great fun as a primary school teacher. I love working with young children who help me to appreciate the world afresh by sharing their unique perspectives and new ideas. Yes, the hours can be long (planning, marking and assessment can take many hours) and work does not end ‘when the bell goes’, but the rewards are great when you get those ‘light bulb’ moments or you see a child blossom.
