EDITOR’S LETTER

june

WELCOME TO THE

ISSUE

Hello and welcome to the June issue of the Moreton Hall Directory.

Crossword competition winner!

The weather has been a bit hit and miss these past few weeks, but hopefully it will start warming up soon! With (hopefully) sunnier times ahead, we’ve been thinking about our summer wardrobes, with some great high street finds and some super-bargain pieces from our local charity shop, you don‘t have to spend a fortune to get those key summer essentials. With it being picnic AND tennis season we thought our lovely recipe on page 34 may take your fancy. And if you are not sure what footwear will suit you, go to page 42 where we’ve featured all styles of sandals under the sun. If you find dieting a struggle, go to page 26 where we show you how easy it is to change just a few things in your everyday life which could help you lose a pound or two. We hope you enjoy this issue, see you in July!

Gemma

Well done to Stacey from Cockfield who answered all the crossword clues correctly in May’s issue of the directory! She won 2 TICKETS to see Soul Scene at the Moreton Hall Community Centre on Friday 29th May. If you are feeling lucky turn to page 46 and see if you can solve this month’s crossword! (Answers for last month’s crossword are on page 38)

CHINESE WHISPERS On Friday the 8th May some children on their way to St James school walked across the field which they use as a short cut, they saw a tent and some of them started throwing stones at the tent, the occupant of the tent came out shouting at the children and waving his fists. According to the police, by the time the children arrived at school the story was as follows: The man had a gun and a knife there was a body and drugs, this got back to some mothers from children texting. Naturally parents were very concerned, as was I, until I spoke to the police. It appears that a man, down on his luck, had put up the tent and spent the night there. He has now gone plus his tent. The police have had a presence at the junction of Shakers Lane each day chatting to the children and assuring them that it is safe and enforcing the fact that they should where possible go in pairs and not to speak to anyone they do not know. Things were getting better until the 11th May when a 25 year old lady approached a member of the public stating that she had just been assaulted, it appears she had been followed by a man along Mount Road and forced into a wooded area where a sexual assault took place. The lady suffered a fractured wrist during the attack, the offender ran 08 | JUNE 2015

off towards Moreton Hall area through the woods. The police helicopter and dog were deployed to search the area and the area cordoned off. Detective Inspector Eamonn Bridger who is leading the investigation said “This was a serious assault in which a woman who was walking on her own was subjected to a traumatic attack. A man has since been arrested and released, investigations are ongoing. These last few days are not the norm and the estate IS a safe place to live. The worst thing is for people to live in fear of crime. Should you see or know of things that are wrong let the police know call 101.

WALKING FOOTBALL

I have been asked to mention this and see if we can generate some interest in setting up and getting at least 10 men to help run a walking football group. This is ‘as seen on TV’ sponsored by Barclays Bank, anyone interested email hullwise@uwclub.net. Give it a try you might like it.

ROADS AND PATHS A lot of our roads are in a terrible mess and I have contacted Highways at county hall requesting that they seriously look at our roads and get something done as soon as possible, potholes, cracked pavements and just bad maintenance is not what should be expected. I know this is a problem throughout the Borough and a lot of work needs doing, but it seems if you shout loud enough, it gets things done, so I am screaming. FIX OUR ROADS.

Club News Both clubs are doing well, more youngsters are attending the Youth club so there is a greater need for more helpers. Can you give one night a month to help supervise a two hour session, please come along its every Tuesday 6.30 to 8.30 except during school holidays. Over 50 club meets on the first Tuesday of the month 11am until 1pm again come along have a chat and a cuppa, it’s free.

Election Results Just to let you know the election results that concern Moreton Hall. The following were elected as your councillors: St Edmundsbury Borough Council: Councillor Terry Buckle Councillor Peter Thompson Councillor Frank Warby Bury Town Council: Councillor Peter Thompson Councillor Clive Springett Councillor Patsy Warby

I would like to pay tribute to Councillor Trevor Beckwith for his service to our estate for the past twenty years and wish him the very best, he it still our County Councillor so if you have any county problems then Trevor is your man. I would also like to thank those of you who voted for us and helped win the election.

Until next time, stay safe, and enjoy the better weather, Frank Warby JUNE 2015 | 09

W hat’s been happening at...

ABBOTS GREEN Community Primary School It has been a very exciting time for the children in our Reception Classes due to the appearance of live caterpillars in school! The caterpillars arrival was planned and linked to this term’s whole school project entitled ‘Imagine’ during which the children will be studying their transformation into butterflies. The caterpillars, which were delivered via Royal Mail and quickly unwrapped in the school office, were sent straight down to class on arrival at Abbots Green. The children were absolutely thrilled to see them inside their pot which contained sufficient food for them to survive this initial stage. The children have been eagerly watching how the caterpillars have grown considerably since then and how already they have begun to change their appearance. Ava explained “The caterpillars changed into a chrysalis and hung from the top of the pot.”

10 | JUNE 2015

Once all the chrysalides are upside down in their pot, and are hardened, they will be carefully transferred to their mesh habitat where they will later emerge as butterflies. “When they have all turned we will put them into the net,” said Samuel. “We can’t wait to see them as butterflies!” added Ila. The children will then help to feed the butterflies each day on fruit and sugar liquid and study them as their wings fully develop. Finally the children will then watch together as the Painted Lady butterflies are released from their Abbots Green home out into the world!

Dear reader,

Innovative new programme to boost patients’ health People with long-term conditions are being given extra support to change their behaviour, manage their own care more successfully and improve their quality of life thanks to a new health coaching initiative at West Suffolk Hospital.

their fitness so that they can walk to the park to play with their grandchildren.

Senior physiotherapists Trudi Dunn and Nina Finlay have both qualified as accredited health coaching trainers as part of a regional initiative spearheaded by Health Education East of England.

It is hoped the scheme will help tackle this trend by reducing readmissions, length of stay and the need for further follow ups after discharge, as well as further improve the experience patients have of using NHS services.

The initiative comes in response to statistics which show that patients with long term conditions account for 64% of all hospital outpatient appointments, 70% of bed days and 70% of total health and social care spend.

“We are really excited to have been given the opportunity to roll out this innovative training to colleagues across West Suffolk Hospital,” said Nina. “We will be training staff from a variety of clinical backgrounds – including doctors, nurses and allied health professionals – the skills they need to talk to people in a way which supports and empowers them to make positive changes to their own lives”.

Finlay Trudi Dunn and Nina

Over the coming 12 months, they will train 200 of their fellow West Suffolk clinicians in health coaching, giving them the right skills to motivate people to put their own health first and manage their conditions with more independence and confidence. The newly-trained clinicians will use their everyday contact with patients, such as outpatient appointments or follow up visits, to offer guidance and help them identify and fulfil meaningful personal goals. This could be anything from giving up smoking so that they can see their family grow up to increasing

“Health coaching can have a big impact on individuals, increasing their confidence, motivation and self-sufficiency and improving their quality of life”. This can also have knock on benefits for the NHS, as it reduces their reliance on health services and the need for repeat GP visits or hospital admissions. “We have already run a pilot training programme at the hospital and have had some great feedback from those who took part, who said they felt health coaching would make a major difference to the approach they took with their patients. We are now looking forward to rolling out the training to even more of our colleagues so that more of our patients can start to enjoy better health and a better quality of life.”

If you have any questions about fundraising, any of the events mentioned above or how you can help the hospital, please contact fundraising@wsh.nhs.uk or call 01284 712952 12 | JUNE 2015

ith dust still settling after the elections a little reminder about what is happening. MHRA has been and still is meeting with Suffolk CC representatives with regard to the New Secondary School primarily to resolve the problem that on the site selected the main building overlooks private residencies resulting in an objection at the Planning Stage, also that there is no provision for parents / guardians of the students to drop them off safely in the vicinity of the school without inconveniencing other

road users. The siting of the main building appears now to be set in stone but we have been assured that the complainant will be consulted about landscaping which hopefully will ensure some privacy. Drop Off lay-bys have been vetoed for Lady Miriam Way but the Council Overview and Scrutiny Committee have suggested parking lay-bys are the most viable option for easing traffic flow problems on Skyliner Way and that until the decision is made no new parking restrictions will be applied. Who knows

if that succeeds we may get some on Lady Miriam Way before the school reaches maximum capacity. The Council is still trying to tie up the land package for the Eastern Relief Road (ERR) and would prefer to do it without resorting to Compulsory Purchase. The project is due to commence in September so it is a case of wait and see. Archie Wotherspoon MHRA Co Chairman moretonhallra.bse@ gmail.com

wild orchards in your lawn BY WOODLANDS WAY

L

ong grass is one of the rarest habitats in Moreton Hall. Most lawns, playing fields, road verges and any other grassy areas you can think of are cut every week or two, for ‘tidiness’. Few people stop to think what would happen if their grass was left to grow for a couple of months. In Salter Close (off Sebert Road), part of one front lawn has been left unmown in May and June each year for twelve years. The first wildflower to appear was bulbous buttercup, and unusual species related to the much more common creeping buttercup. After four years, a pyramidal orchid appeared. Orchid seeds are like dust, so can blow for many miles before landing. Interestingly, orchids have a compulsory relationship with certain species of soil fungi; without the fungi to help them, they can’t grow. So the soil fungus must have been present in that front garden, and presumably is

in many other gardens and public grasslands in Moreton Hall. Bee orchids grow in the bat meadow at Natterer’s Wood in the long grass every year. Bee orchids have also been seen in verges near Matalan and in the field across the road from Sainsbury’s. Why don’t you keep an eye out for orchids as you walk around Moreton Hall? Look in the grass that is not mown to a few centimetre high every week, and if you don’t always find an orchid there’s bound to be other wild flowers. Even better, why not subscribe to the Moreton Hall Directory method of grass mowing in May and June each year? Simply read the Moreton Hall Directory, instead of mowing the lawn! You too might show off your wonderful wild flowers to your neighbours, rather than having a plain green carpet like everyone else.

Join us at Woodland Ways... Why not join in with a Woodland Ways work party to help improve the Moreton Hall woods? No experience is needed and all are welcome; we’ll show you what to do. For more information please see www.woodlandways.org.uk, see the Woodland Ways noticeboard in the Community Centre, contact Nick Sibbett on 01284 723847 or email information@woodlandways.org.uk.

Welcome to the 19th hole, a place for golf tips, reviews and everything golf related.

Welcome back to the 19th hole, I hope you are all making use of the light nights for either more practice or to get out and play a few holes of golf. It’s at this time of the year that new clubs are being tested on the course, and I am no different in this. I have a new putter for the start of the season and I thought I would share my thoughts on this putter and others in the same range. Odyssey Works Putter Range Review This putter range features many different head shapes, some traditional and others with great alignment aids. The main features are the two tone alignment aids and the thin metal mesh on the face, this is meant to give you a better and quick roll on the ball. I have found this new insert to feel great on all lengths of putt, it allows for a softer feel on impact which I have found to help my distance control, which is all we are trying to achieve when hitting any putt. I have gone for the Odyssey V Line shape, with its colour contrast alignment aids making set up easy and a traditional mallet shape there is nothing to distract me when stood over any putt. If you are looking for a new putter I would say this range of putters is a must as there is a putter to suit any eye. Coaches Corner - Jump into better posture Your posture is there to provide support for the body as it rotates throughout your swing, these positions created at address place pressure on the ground and it is this pressure and good positions that allows golfer to make such controlled and explosive movements throughout the swing.

This quick and easy exercise will allow you create a great base to build your address position from, and allow you to move under full control. JUMP - Simply from a standing position jump vertically. You will need to make sure you jump high enough to make your ankle joint flex when you land (between one and two feet is fine). Please make to keep your hands out for balance and safety reasons. IMPACT AND FEEL THE FLOOR - When you land hold your position. The angles created through the ankles and knees will be very similar to those needed at address. Your body will have balanced its self and you will feel your weight through the arches of your feet and that pressure is being placed onto the ground under you. READY - During your set up you can work in an unnoticeable version of this drill, with small bounces and feelings in your legs and feet to get you back into this “ready” position. When you feel your weight in positioned neutral - neither back or forward, left or right then you are ready to make your swing from a balanced position using the ground as your foundation. I hope you have enjoyed reading the 19th hole once again, and if you have any questions or items you would like me to cover please feel free to contact me. Also if you think your game could benefit from a lesson then please again feel free to contact me for availability and don’t forget to quote MHD to receive £5 off your first lesson with myself. A look at exercises, research and alternative therapies to balance out your hormones. Why is it that so many young girls and women have problems with hormonal imbalances? Is it the stresses of modern day life, genes or some kind of consciousness that has been passed down from women to women over the centuries? Hormones can become imbalanced, but obviously affect the body much more positively when they are balanced. A woman’s hormones are important chemicals affecting our brain, heart, bones, muscles and reproductive organs. With chaotic lives, poor dietary choices shouting at us to be eaten, lower levels of physical activity and higher stress levels, there is no wonder that women’s hormones are increasingly imbalanced. It is thought that around 75% of women suffer with symptoms of imbalanced hormones, and is often accepted as the norm! But it isn’t and the symptoms don’t have to be tolerated.

HEALTH & BEAUTY

Bend andBlend

At the self centre there are a range of opportunities to help you discover how balanced or imbalanced your hormone’s are, why, and how to increase the balance your body needs to work effectively. Check out this forthcoming workshop on 24th June, 10.30am – 12.30pm Healing Hormonal Imbalances The menstrual years This talk will look at how our emotional, mental and spiritual beliefs can bring on physical symptoms. Premenstrual syndrome (PMS), Endometriosis and PCOS will also be discussed in more detail. You will go away with: • An understanding of how herbal medicine can help improve your situation, • A clearer knowledge of how your diet and how you think about things can play a vital part in your ongoing support. You will find a range of therapies and classes that can help to balance out your hormones!

A combination of dietary tips, mind/body exercises and latest research blended together to promote health & vitality.

Reflexology* works on reducing stress and improving circulation as well as a variety of other things which help to balance out the hormones. Aromatherapy Massage persuades the body and mind to relax. The essential oils used in the massage are powerful substances contained within a plant and have been identified as having qualities that are hormone balancing, in varying degrees according to the plant. We also have yoga, qi gong, and pilates classes to name a few, that can help to increase your physical activity which can support your improved hormone balance. To book on the workshop or find out more about what is on offer at the self centre, please visit www.the-selfcentre.co.uk or call our friendly reception team on 01284 769090. *In 1991 a study at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) found that 62 percent of women who received weekly reflexology treatments experienced relief from premenstrual syndrome symptoms. www.naturaltherapypages.com.au

Swap rice cakes and crispbreads for oat cakes and whole grain breads

They may be higher in calories but they’re also digested more slowly, which means they’ll keep you feeling full for longer without upsetting blood sugar levels, thus helping you to lose weight.

Swap intensively reared supermarket meat for free range, better quality sources

Not only will you be doing your bit for animal welfare, but the animals’ increased exercise helps to keep their saturated fat levels down

Swap sweetened fizzy drinks for water

It might sound boring, but water will not only reduce sugar intake and improve skin condition, it’ll also help detoxify your body leaving you energised and ready to hit the gym.

Swap sugar for xylitol – xylitol is a natural sugar alternative

Whilst being lower in calories and carbohydrates than sugar it is xylitol’s low GI value that is important. It releases its energy very slowly when it is digested and studies have shown those that swap sugar for xylitol go on to eat less calories during the day. Plus it’s great for your teeth. Xylitol is available in shops under the brand name Total Sweet.

Swap that mid-morning biscuit or cereal bar for a handful of nuts or seeds The added protein will boost your energy and stabilise blood sugar levels without fattening you.

Swap pudding for a slice of pineapple

The bromelain in pineapple is a digestive enzyme, which helps you breakdown your meal and absorb the nutrients more effectively.

Swap tea and coffee for herbal teas or green tea

To help keep you hydrated whilst avoiding caffeine to keep your energy levels stable.

Swap white bread, rice and pasta for wholemeal versions These are more filling, easier to digest, and less fattening.

Swap white fish such as cod, plaice and haddock for oily fish like trout, salmon and mackerel

To boost your level of skin, hormone, brain and heart-helping omega 3 essential fats

Swap normal yoghurts for live probiotic ones

Not only do probiotic products aid digestion and improve wellbeing, recent research has suggested they may also have a positive impact on metabolism.

Beating Breast Cancer Linda is back this month to keep all our readers updated on her very brave battle with breast cancer... Linda

I’m struggling to be particularly positive at the moment and do feel that I have very little energy or mojo in me… so forgive me if this article isn’t as upbeat as my previous ones. It has been weeks since I have put pen to paper and I haven’t even kept up with writing in my Journal. I didn’t have the mental strength last month to write, not only because I was just out of my surgery but also because the day I came out of hospital, another family member was taken seriously ill and our family are dealing with and coming to terms with this news still. So at the end of the last article I had just found out that I was being sent straight to surgery before completing the last of my chemotherapy treatment. My surgery was on 1st April and following my consultations with the Breast Surgeon we agreed the best option was to have a mastectomy with immediate reconstruction. With all breast surgery they also remove the first few lymph nodes, which is referred to as a sentinel node biopsy. They inject a radioactive substance, a blue dye, or both, near the tumour to locate the position of the sentinel lymph node. A device is then used to find the sentinel node or looks for lymph nodes that are stained with the blue dye. Once the sentinel lymph node is located, an incision is made under the armpit and the nodes removed. I was admitted to F5 at 7am and felt calm and relaxed throughout the morning practicing some deep breathing and a little Qi Qong. However, it was a different story when they came to wheel me down to theatre! All set with thick black pen 28 | JUNE 2015

markings, lovely hospital gown and stockings on, I was on my way down to theatre when the tears started. It wasn’t my best look when the rather handsome Anesthetist walked round the corner to see me. I wasn’t concerned with the operation then – more about where was my hair and make up at this precise time! I woke up in recovery and after some time there, returned to the ward about 5.30pm where I tucked into my banana, nuts and seeds and bottled water that I had bought with me before my family came to visit. I was pretty woozy from the surgery and had low blood pressure all evening as well as a little fluid retention in my ankles and arms. The following day the staff monitored my blood pressure and as soon as it started to rise, I was able to go home. Generally I wasn’t in too much pain so didn’t have to rely on the painkillers too often thankfully. I had a lovely attractive drain complete with a little bag (matching the hospital curtain material). Note to self when completely recovered to make some ‘pretty’ material ones for the breast clinic. My new little drain friend ‘Doris’ had to stay in for 10 days as I was collecting quite a lot of fluid. I would sometimes forget that ‘Doris’ was attached to me and would get up and start walking to realise that she was trailing behind me! So the first couple of weeks, whilst getting used to having a foreign object in my body and all the issues that I had with the surgery from it (which I am sure you don’t want me to go into), were relatively ok with a few trips back and forth to the hospital for various issues. I then returned to the Breast Clinic on the 15th April for my results. I hadn’t even contemplated that the lymph nodes would have been affected as all my scans where showing clear. So you really could of knocked me over with a feather when my Consultant told me the news that the biopsy had tested positive for cancer on all 4 of

my lymph nodes that were taken. I think the shock of this news hit me harder than when I received the initial diagnosis. The upshot of this was that I was to undergo another surgery the following week to remove all of the lymph nodes from my armpit otherwise knows as axillary clearance. Of course since all of this has happened I was thinking, why isn’t there someway of avoiding having to have 2 surgeries if the lymph nodes are cancerous. I have since read up that there is a National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) sentinel lymph node test for surgeons to use during the operation. It works by picking up a protein marker, which is linked to breast cancer. This protein is not normally found in healthy lymph node tissue. The test gives results in about half an hour, so the surgeon can decide during the initial operation if they need to remove the other lymph nodes. This means that you avoid a second operation. I am assuming this isn’t being carried out at West Suffolk Hospital as yet! I wish it was, as suffice to say, having one major operation is traumatic enough, but to undergo a second so soon whilst still recovering is not ideal! So it was back to F5 again and the lovely hospital stockings. This time round there wasn’t the tears and I had a lovely team of female Anesthetists to reassure me. After my second surgery I was even more sore, stiff and numb - particularly my arm and shoulder area and on more antibiotics. The numbness in my arm to date is incredibly sensitive with what I can only describe as an intense burning sensation and if someone accidentally touches it or goes to give me a hug it feels horrible! I believe this is from nerve damage and it will be hit and miss as to whether the numbness will completely go and the nerves regenerate themselves. Having had this procedure you are at a risk of developing Lymphedema too, which is treatable, but not curable. In brief the lymphatic system is made up of lymphatic vessels (similar to blood vessels) and lymph nodes (glands) that extend throughout the body. The number of lymph nodes you have in your armpit may be as few as ten or

HEALTH & BEAUTY

less, to over thirty. It helps maintain the balance of fluid in the body by draining excess fluids from the tissues of the body and returning it to the blood system. The lymph nodes also filter any unwanted materials such as bacteria to help prevent infection. I have to be extra careful not to get the arm infected by any cuts or burns, I can’t use a razor or hair removal cream, when going abroad you have to avoid getting insect bites and when flying I need to wear a compression sleeve. As well as this my sun protection factor will have to be increased so as not to burn! I am keeping an eye on the measurements of both my arms and looking for any swelling, which could be a sign of Lymphedema. I have also been shown some lymphatic draining massage techniques, which I can use to help reduce the risk. I returned to the Clinic on 6th May for my results, which unfortunately showed that the majority of the lymph nodes removed tested positive for Cancer. I am now waiting to see my Oncologist on the 20th May to discuss the next stage of treatment that they want me to have…Radiation. Not only to the chest wall but also to the collarbone. Previously my thought process was that once the Cancer had been removed I would be doing everything in my power to support my system instead of going through any more conventional treatment afterwards. Now that it is in the Lymph nodes I am not sure what to do for the best. What is frustrating is that there is no way of knowing if it has spread to any other parts of the lymphatic system in my body. So why ‘burn’ the collarbone if it has perhaps surpassed that area?! Surely in this day and age of technology there is a test available that can detect where the Cancer is in the lymphatic system?! Immensely frustrating and of course not great for me living in fear of not just recurrence but now the spread of it to other organs in the future. By the next article I will know more and have made an informed decision. The road to recovery has been impinged since having to have the second operation and I have less movement in my arm and shoulder but am completing my regime of exercises to help regain the range of motion. I have also suffered from Seroma’s under the armpit (build up of fluid in the cavity that my lymph nodes were in), and have been back

to the clinic to have these drained by needle aspiration. The first one felt and looked like a golf ball under my arm! Moving away from the operations and issues surrounding them and onto Hair. I lost my eyebrows and eyelashes two weeks after my last chemotherapy. Can you believe it! I managed to hang on to them all the way through only to lose them after completing my sessions! How unfair was that! Thankfully they are now growing back again so I have avoided wearing any make up, as I want to give them the chance to gain some strength. Of course all the unwanted hair is coming back first and growing quickly…but the hair on my head – that’s another story. My natural hair colour was mid brownish with some greys (emphasis on some!). That is NOT what is growing back now – oh no …. what I have now is a mix of the ‘salt and pepper’ look with more of the salt – 50 shades of grey! A female version of George Clooney perhaps..?! Celebrity ‘A’ listers may be rocking the Grey look this season but if my normal hair colour doesn’t return when it starts growing back more, I will have to start looking at chemical free organic hair dyes! On the subject of hair, as its now coming into Summer I popped in to see Steve at Stephen John Hair Salon recently and after much discussion and trying on various short wigs I now have a lovely bobbed style one with a fringe in some lighter hair colour tones for the summer. My long wigs are lovely, but I think may be a little too hot to wear in the heat – assuming we get some sunshine this year! I won’t be sporting many open toe shoes this summer. The nails on both my toes and hands are not in great shape at all and I’m pretty much losing the majority of the nail bed. I know it makes one of my close friends cringe when I show her! On my Nutrition side, I am continuing with my regime and have incorporated a few more supplements post surgery to help aid recovery – particularly Vitamin E, Zinc and Arnica to help with reducing the bruising. I have a cream for the scars, which has Vitamin E and Calendula in to help reduce scaring. I’ve also

started to take Aloe Vera Aborescens food supplement to help boost the immune system. Having recently had a tummy bug and another cold and cough I clearly still have a lot of work to do on supporting and building my immune system back up. In terms of my social life, I attended a Cancer Research Fundraising Evening a week after my second surgery with some of my close friends and managed to stay out till 11pm, which is a first! Thankfully Doris was removed a couple of days previous so she wasn’t my accessory for the evening. My Aunt and Cousin came over from Ireland for a long weekend to help celebrate my Mum’s birthday. Seeing them was lovely and gave me a great boost and I look forward to catching up with them again soon I hope. I have also booked a couple of holidays for later in the year and will be off to the Amalfi Coast in Italy for a few days and then NY & Boston for a long weekend. Am hopeful that I am physically on the mend by then! I would also like to go on a Yoga retreat somewhere so will look into that too as I haven’t been able to doing any physical exercise for some time now aside from my little walks! I may also invest in a 4-wheel case as lifting anything heavy is out of the question for the rest of my life now due to the lymph node removal. Speaking of lifting heavy items, I have just received delivery of my new lightweight cordless GTech hoover. Poor Henry hoover will be taking a break for some time now…he’s just too heavy for me to use now! Overall the last 7 months have passed quickly in terms of time, but I would say that as time goes by, the whole process of what I am going through seems to be getting tougher - both physically and mentally. I know people have said that the treatments are nearing an end and that it will soon all be over and I can get on with my life, but I think the Journey is only just beginning in lots of ways and that very few will understand this unless they have experienced it themselves. I will however, continue to deal with it one day at a time with a positive attitude as much as I can muster!

My wife and I dined at

Bill’s on the evening of Spring bank holiday Monday. After an extremely busy weekend with the Whitsun Fayre the staff were still friendly, polite and enthusiastic. We were shown to a cosy table in the corner and after ordering wine we preceded to look at the menu, which presented, to quote my Father-in-law, “all manner of modern food” at very reasonable prices.

Check out our Secret Garden!

Kerrie chose the grilled halloumi with quinoa, speckled lentil and roasted fennel salad to start while I picked the crab, chilli and prawn cakes, both beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. To follow I opted for the 10oz sirloin steak served with skin on fries and watercress. While Kerrie thoroughly enjoyed her lamb, I think that secretly she had food envy! It would have been a shame not to sample the ‘puddings’ so I managed to squeeze in a warm pecan pie with malted banana ice cream to die for. The cheese board arrived perfectly presented with just the right ratio of cheese to yummy sultana bread, with Bill’s chutney, celery and grapes on the side. We would thoroughly recommend Bill’s whether it’s for a romantic meal for two or a larger gathering of family or friends, Bill’s is the perfect choice. With exquisite décor, soft lighting and fascinating chalkboards the building lends itself well to a fabulous dining experience!

Another successful Community Fun Day at Southgate Community Centre & Hardwick Primary School... The second Southgate Community Fun Day was held on Bank Holiday Monday at the Southgate Community Centre, Church Centre and Hardwick Primary School in Bury St Edmunds, organised by the Southgate Community Partnership in conjunction with the school. Following last year’s inaugural event which raised over £500 to launch a defibrillator appeal the day was blessed with fine weather and hundreds from the local Hardwick, Nowton and Southgate communities as well as visitors from around the town attended an action packed day of activities. A Year 1 six-a-side football tournament with eight teams from local primary schools started the day on the school field and a morning of hugely entertaining games culminated with the host team from Hardwick winning the competition undefeated. Events throughout the day included arena performances from the Bury Starlets, Dancing Stars and music from the Marrakesh Swing Band. Entertainment with inflatables, climbing wall and laser quest provided fun for all the family and in the afternoon there was maypole dancing and children’s races. In the community centre there was held a table top sale and the Church Centre provided refreshments and cake sale. Southgate Pre-School held children’s activities and a Hardwick Family Challenge. During the event Partnership trustee Sarah Stamp with Chairman Tim Sheppard presented a cheque for £500 to Dave Gooderham from the West Suffolk Hospital Charity, part of the proceeds from a Valentine’s Ball held at the centre in February.

Organiser, trustee and school governor Andy Abbott said the whole day was a huge success.

At Hardwick we have a dedicated group of volunteer football coaches and are delighted to be able to host a tournament for our year 1 pupils. There was a terrific atmosphere during all the matches and fantastic to watch such young boys and girls competing and enjoying the occasion. The Southgate Community Partnership stage the event with the Church and School to provide an opportunity for a great local community to have a family day out and enjoy themselves. We were blessed with the weather for a second year and it was wonderful to see so many people meeting up and enjoying themselves.

Routine Remix BY ANDREW SOUTHWOOD

B

y the time you read this many of you will be breathing a deep sigh of relief. Yes, you made it through the half term week in one piece. Hopefully your children didn’t injure or maim each other too much and you resisted the temptation to lock them in a cupboard so you could have 5 minutes peace with cuppa! The school holidays can be testing times for parents and children alike. Humans by nature are creatures of habit. We may not like to admit it but we thrive on mundane routines. This goes for both adults and small children alike. So, when the predictable becomes unpredictable, it can really throw us and makes for some tough days. Our youngest, although only just one, knows the school run. She knows the day starts with a walk to school, lots of attention from the nursery kids (and parents/teachers), and then the hustle and bustle of the main playground

54 | JUNE 2015

is followed by the calm of a buggy walk nap. Similarly, her sister realises that she comes home at lunchtime and she has the afternoon with us before big brother is collected. It’s all in the virtual timetable in her head – in both our heads. And then along comes a school holiday. Even if I do say so myself, I can normally handle the three of them on my own for a day without a problem. I do it quite regularly, but there is something about having a week away from the school routine that seems to affect them, or maybe it affects me more? With the little ones, by the time you factor in naps, snacks, and lunch, there isn’t actually that much time left to actually ‘do’ anything anyway! A walk into town is feasible, just. Although last time I did that with all of them I ended up crawling back in the drizzle after lunch with all three asleep – 2 in the

double decker and one in a carrier on my chest. Add a rucksack/changing bag onto my back and two scooters hanging of the buggy, and I was an overloaded mule, creeping up that hill back from town. Still, it was fun in its own special ‘look at that crazy dad’ sort of way. Using the car is of course an option for me. But this has its own issues. Young children sleep in cars – fact. It’s virtually impossible to keep them awake if you are outnumbered. Many of you will know exactly what I mean, and understand that timing the drive back to coincide with rest time is the primary goal of actually going out in the first place. So, unless I want my children sleeping in the late afternoon (believe me - I don’t!), I would need to be heading home soon after arriving!?. Oh well, its all good practice. Only another month or two and then we have the joy of 6 whole weeks of ‘holiday’. Hmmm… I can hardly wait!?

All Play and No Work

Simon Head

‘Five Hundred Days of Summer’ is a good film, but when you feel it could be applied to the school holidays it raises some questions. Why are the summer holidays so long? And is this a bad thing? I love the excuse that schools have August and the best bits of July off so that the children can harvest strawberries or glean the fields. It’s a bit like saying lessons finish at 3.30pm to dodge the Blitz. I’m normally all for perpetuating tradition - no pencil case should lack a pair of compasses - but I really don’t feel we’re that tethered to our agricultural past. I think that school summer holidays are sumptuously long because they should be. Just as sleep helps us tidy the day away, the holidays give children a chance to recharge and reorganise. If this occasionally takes the form of forgetting, so be it. Children’s minds are excessively inquisitive and acquisitive. They gain importantly from the chance to swap collating the abstract and tested with the tangible and tasted. This switch should coincide with longer days as they offer the greater bounty of experience. The change of focus only compliments what has and will take place in the classroom. Just as tree rings demarcate cycles of growth, generous holidays promote it. Holidays need to span the weeks that they do because the terms themselves are long and set up sustained patterns. Chopping up the process into shorter segments disrupts these rhythms. As a Headmaster, I always brace for heavier desk-traffic in the run-up to half-terms and holidays. Children are acutely tuned to these cycles, and pace themselves accordingly. It is in everyone’s interests to put as much quality matter between the bookends as possible. Chunking the terms and holidays into more and tighter brackets is counterproductive. Long may long holidays continue. Simon Head is Headmaster of Moreton Hall Preparatory School. headmaster@moretonhallprep.org

garden confidential BY PAUL CLARKE

PAULS PLANT OF THE MONTH

Antirrhinum snapdragon What to do in your garden in June

The Latin name, Antirrhinum, means “like a snout”. What child hasn’t gently squeezed the sides of the intricately shaped flower to see the jaws of a dragon head snap closed . Snapdragons are bushy plants with tall spikes of flower buds. Snapdragons are available in most colors except blue May be grown from cuttings or from seed. Choose a siter in your garden which provides full sunlight. Pinch back young plants after 4-6 leaves have appeared to encourage a bushy habit Dead head flowers often to encourage more blooms. If blooms become scarce, cut back plants drastically then feed and water generously. Alternatively leave Snapdragons to self-seed and they will come back year after year.

62 | JUNE 2015

If like me you didn’t manage to get to the Chelsea flower show then perhaps it has wetted your appetite to visit some open garden events. They are a chance to get some ideas , spot a wonderful plant or get inspired by a garden design. It is also a chance let’s face it to be a bit nosey and that’s half the fun to see what other gardeners are doing in their gardens. In the town centre you can visit the Bury Hidden Gardens on the 21st June. Tickets available in advance from The Apex in Bury and on the day from the gazebo on Angel Hill, Bury. It is also the 3rd year that the Moreton Hall Open Gardens event is being run, this time on Sunday July 5th. Tickets available from the Coffee House, in Lawson Place Both events in aid of St Nicholas Hospice Care.

pauls jobs for the month General Maintenance

once flowers are over

• Keep running the hoe over any • Fill gaps in your borders with annuals such as cosmos, bare soil to keep the weeds tagetes and zinnias down. • Deadhead lupins when the flowers at the top of the spike Lawn Maintenance begin to fade • Lawns should be growing fast and will need cutting every 2 weeks. Trim the edges for a neat finish.

Flower Garden • Tie in perennials such as dahlias and delphiniums to avoid them being flattened by strong winds. • Good time to hang your baskets now risk of frost is over. • Deadhead your rose bushes regularly, cut the flower head right back to the first leaf you come to. This will ensure a succession of flowers through the summer • Cut back flowering currants

• Prune philadelphus after flowering. The flowers for next year form in new growth so pruning now gives the maximum amount of time to form.

Vegetable Garden • You can plant tomatoes and courgettes in the vegetable bed. • Continue to make sowings of salad crops such as lettuce, spring onions and rocket • Your runner beans will need some support. I usually put in a couple of rows 2ft apart. I like to use 8ft tall bamboo canes and bend these into the centre

This months poem...

to form an A frame. I also tie in additional canes along the length of the canes about 2 ft off the ground to give the framework more solidity and give the beans more chance to climb. • Plant out Brussel sprouts and leeks • Earth up potatoes • The fruits on your strawberries will have many admirers . Keep the birds off with suitable netting. Keep the fruit off the ground by using straw or newspaper around your plants. • Thin out apples, plums and pears if the trees look over burdened.

“’Wisteria woke me this morning, And there was all June in the garden; I felt them, early, warning. Lest I miss any part of the day. Straight I walked to the trellis vine. Wisteria touched a lifted nostril: Feelings of beauty diffused, to entwine. My spirit with June’s own aura.” ANN MCGOUGH, Summons

Illumin8 Blind Studio By Ashley Wilde

Last year new health and safety legislation was introduced in relation to continuous loop cord controls on blinds. As a result of the changes and a growing demand for bespoke blind solutions, Glasswells have installed a new Blind Studio into their furnishings stores in Bury St Edmunds and Ipswich, to give customers not only a wide choice of blind designs , but also peace of mind GW0369 The Moreton Hall Feb15 issue A5.indd 1 when it comes to safety and installation. Sarah Woodvine, Buyer “The search for a new blind supplier began last summer and I visited a number of exhibitions before choosing the Illumin8 systems. They have a large range of blind designs and models, which means that we really can find the perfect blind to dress even the most difficult window, even bi-fold doors. Installing the studio has allowed us to show the blinds at their full height, which gives our customers a much better feeling about how they will look in their home and a chance to operate the blinds themselves. Our experienced team is always on hand to answer any technical questions, as well as help you match up fabrics and textures to bring your interior design ideas to life. Come in to store and you will see blind systems and finished that you didn’t even know existed.”

READY IN 10 WORKING DAYS HUNDREDS OF DESIGNS, FABRICS AND STYLES TO CHOOSE FROM FREE WINDOW MEASURING SERVICE Blind Safety l Continuous loop cords must be at least 1.5m (5ft) from the floor l For cords that need to be lower than this, install a chain break connector which will separate under any undue pressure l Opt for cordless blinds; motorised blinds do cost a little more, but are 100% child safe 66 | JUNE 2015

strawberries vs raspberries

At the moment I am loving fruit with meringues or yoghurt! But what I get upset about is that everyone is always like, “ooooh strawberries!” and forgets about raspberries! In the summer you can go and pick them fresh for yourself. You can choose from strawberries, raspberries and blue berries. I can’t wait for the picking season to begin! After last month’s page you might need to eat healthily this month!

planet laser

I have interviewed two boys called Zak and Felix about Planet Laser, Felix was the first person to have their birthday party there! How did it work? F: On the gun it said your code name instead of your actual name. Z: You can hide behind walls and shoot people through gaps. Were there any special effects or amazing features? Z: The smoke looked like someone had just thrown down a smoke bomb. F: The smoke went green at points. Was it pitch black? F: Downstairs it was pitch black but everywhere else had some light. Z: In one room there was a little bit of light with bright patches everywhere. Would you recommend it? F: Yes it a nice big place and they have cool see through guns. Z: Yes, definitely a fun place to go with mates.

First Day of Summer The Summer Solstice

The solstice heralds the beginning of summer in the Northern Hemisphere. In 2015, the summer begins with the solstice on June 21 at 12:38 P.M. EDT. The timing of the solstice depends on when the Sun reaches its farthest point north of the equator. The word solstice is from the Latin solstitium, from sol (sun) and stitium (to stop), reflecting the fact that the Sun appears to stop at this time (and again at the winter solstice). In temperate regions, we notice that the Sun is higher in the sky throughout the day, and its rays strike Earth at a more direct angle, causing the efficient warming we call summer. This summer solstice is the day with the most hours of sunlight during the whole year. JUNE 2015 | 77

Community celebration of cycling for start of Women’s Tour After attracting crowds in excess of anything seen in Europe for the final of the inaugural Women’s Tour, Bury is preparing to welcome the start of this year’s tour on 17th June. The community is at the centre of two days of activities which see a celebration of cycling at it’s highest level. The afternoon of Tuesday 16 June offers opportunities for people to try out different forms of cycling in Charter Square. The excitement builds in the evening when the top 16 international cycling teams in the world are introduced to the crowds of supporters outside the Apex. Local people will lead off the Grand Depart on Wednesday 17 June before the peloton makes a warm up loop around the town, offering many vantage points for spectators on the route. Bury St Edmunds Town Council, St Edmundsbury Borough Council and Suffolk County Council are all funding the event.

and businesses alike offer a consistently warm welcome, and I think these admirable community qualities draw visitors. I am very pleased that town and borough councils also work closely to attract such events, ensuring that the town’s community reaps maximum benefit.” Cllr Jo Rayner, St Edmundsbury Borough Council Cabinet member for Leisure and Culture said, “West Suffolk has a strong cycling culture and the idea of the Women’s Tour immediately clicked here. Local support for last year’s final was absolutely tremendous, and demonstrates the growing interest in cycling as a lifestyle choice, as a sport and as a very sociable activity. The fact that it is enjoyed by all ages and abilities is borne out in the terrific community involvement in every aspect of this year’s start, from the welcome on Tuesday night to actually leading the riders off on Wednesday morning. It will be memorable.”

Commenting on the central role played by the town, Cllr Andrew Speed, Chair of Bury St Edmunds Town Council said, “I am proud at how well Bury embraces these significant occasions. Residents JUNE MAY 2015 | 79

Christ Church

T

he church across the world has just celebrated the Feast of Pentecost. While this is one of the most important festivals in the church’s year, of equal importance as Christmas and Easter, for most people in Britain this festival passes them by largely unnoticed. The reason the church gets so enthusiastic about an event that happened two thousand years ago in Jerusalem is that it marks the birth of the church. We believe that Jesus Christ, having returned to heaven, then sends the Holy Spirit (the third member of the Trinity) to come and dwell in the hearts and minds of the people who believe and follow Jesus. This festival expresses two extraordinary insights into the nature of both humanity and the spiritual understanding of the world in which we live. The first is that God Himself, having come down and taken human form in the life and work of Jesus, now comes again in a second way. He comes as a supernatural force and dwells inside the souls and minds of all who believe in

Jesus. This means they have a permanent link with God and heaven, their prayers are answered and every thought and every word is brought before the presence of God. This is both an incredible privilege and a huge responsibility. The second thing is that those who have received the Holy Spirit are endowed with great gifts. In some cases the presence of the Holy Spirit takes existing talents and makes them more effective. In other cases supernatural gifts like preaching, teaching, prophesy, supernatural understanding, healings and miracles are now entrusted both to the church as a whole and to individuals. This has meant that the church has been able to do extraordinary things for the past two thousand years. In fact, there has never been a year or a country in the world where somebody through praying to God by the Holy Spirit has not been able to do a miracle or a healing. The net result of this spiritual interaction is that the disciples

MORETON HALL of Jesus are filled with God’s love; God’s love for us and God’s love for each other. The Christian church should be a place supremely of love, understanding and forgiveness. We all know that in many cases the church, particularly the local church, fails to do that. Many of the problems that religion has caused are because people have closed off their hearts to the love of God. However, the other great thing is that God is a God of forgiveness. When we fail to love and cause harm, if we repent and say sorry and try not to do it again and to lead better lives, God does forgive and we are restored with even more love than we were before. At this time in our nation’s life, we truly do face a crossroads. One of the results election result is that if we have an in-out referendum in the next few years our future and the future of Europe will be profoundly changed. Equally, unless there can be an accommodation between the Westminster government and the Scottish Nationalist Party, Great Britain as I have known it all through my life will cease to exist. This would be a great pity because, despite its faults, British society is a model which most of the world tries to emulate. Despite our frequent rows and disappointments our presence in Europe has been a force for good and without us the European dream may be destroyed.

OURServices JUNE SERVICE

That is why on June 14th Christ Church Moreton Hall is joining in with the nationwide campaign called ‘Society Sunday’. We are going to draw together many groups from within our community at Moreton Hall and give thanks to God for all they do and ask God to bless us as we share our lives together. After the bruising and battering many have taken through the General Election, this is a time for communities to come together, give thanks to God for one another and seek through prayer and mutual understanding to explore ways in which we can work together better. As a resident of Moreton Hall I would like to invite you to come.

I really do believe that if we let the Holy Spirit into our lives, if we are filled by God with genuine love for Him and for one another, we can make society work far better. We have a great community on Moreton Hall and have much to be proud of. We are right to want to safeguard it and make it better. Coming together to pray and share, whether we are involved in the community life or just a resident here, would be a wonderful thing. Why not set 14th June at 10.30 a.m. apart in your diary, come along and join us and stay for tea, coffee and cake afterwards. There is much on our estate to celebrate and the power of the Holy Spirit released at Pentecost will give us all the spiritual integrity and love that we need to make our community a great community.

WHAT’S ON

American funky/jazz guitarist continues his yearly UK tours “recording artist prepares for a new recording with his longest tour yet” New Jersey, USA – May 26, 2015 – Award-winning jazz guitarist, and critically acclaimed composer, B.D. Lenz brings his trio back to the UK for their longest tour yet. The band will embark on a 19-date tour that will crisscross much of England. This trip comes as Lenz prepares to record “Manifesto,” his ninth album as a leader, due for an early 2016 release and funded via a recent crowdfunding campaign. A prolific writer and seemingly ubiquitous musician with songs licensed for use in hundreds of TV shows internationally (most recently on the hits ‘Breaking Bad’ and “Catfish the TV Show”), Lenz and company have developed a strong following in the UK since their first trip in 2008. The guitarist says, “Our first trip to the UK consisted of 4 nights at the same club in London. It was a great start but we were ambitious to develop it into something bigger.” Year after year he has done just that. This, their eighth tour, is the longest yet with every night booked (but one) on a 19-date trip. Lenz continues, “…the [UK] audiences are so receptive and welcoming to us. The fans have even helped us get gigs and have requested us at several new venues. It feels like we’re visiting friends and family now when we come back.” Lenz and trio bring along an eclectic program with them. Their sets may venture from a lush jazz standard, to a rocking cover of Radiohead, to a funk-laden original, to a Bob Marley classic. Yet they still manage to reproduce these songs in their own style, reflecting Lenz’s unique flavor, and always open to improvisation. The guitarist says, “we’re jazz musicians at heart but have been raised on the same pop & rock music everyone else has. So, we like to live in both worlds and combine recognizable songs with fearless jamming.” You can hear the merger of these worlds for yourself as Lenz and trio will be performing throughout the UK from 4 July through 22 July with 19 gigs in 19 days. Appearances include: Bury St. Edmunds appearance Sunday, 19 July at The Fox Inn located at 1 Eastgate St., Bury St. Edmunds IP33 1XX beginning at 7:15pm. More information can be found at www.oldenglishinss.co.uk/ourlocations/the-fox-inn or by calling 01284 705 562 For more information about this, or other, performances visit www.bdlenz.com. About the Artist Mix together the styles of Pat Metheny, Mike Stern, and Stevie Ray Vaughn and you have the recipe for contempo-jazz guitarist B.D. Lenz. He has played guitar since the age of 14, graduated from Musicians Institute in Hollywood California, and studied with greats like Mike Stern, Vic Juris, and Charlie Banacos. He has released eight recordings as a leader featuring jazz luminaries Randy Brecker, Will Lee, Mark Egan, Joel Rosenblatt and others. Earning GIGMASTERS.com top jazz group in 2008, 2009, and 2011, Lenz then published a complete songbook of his first seven recordings in 2012. His music has been used in hundreds of TV shows internationally and this Godin-endorsed guitarist has performed throughout the U.S. and U.K., keeping the audience on their feet whether playing jazz, fusion, or jam. 88 | JUNE 2015

With all that going on, we haven’t forgotten to keep you entertained this month though, so with our Tuesday night Bingo in the side bar every other week, if you like a little flutter, come along and play, with cash prizes, you may go home with more than you came! 80s is the theme this month, if you remember the 80s, you will know its bright colours, tacky pop music and dodgy films, which we all remember as brilliant days! So test your knowledge with our 80s Quiz on Saturday 20th June, teams of 4 or more people, and win cash on the night. Phil the Rhythm will also be hosting a Disco on Saturday 27th June playing all the old tunes to boogie along to all night in the clubroom, this is open to anyone that wants to come along and join in the fun. Free Entry, with the dress code being as bright and funky as you want, so get the lycra and leggings out of the wardrobe

and dress to impress! Fathers Day is on Sunday 21st June this year, so we will be serving up our very yummy Sunday Roast, which offers a choice of 1, 2 or 3 courses, with 2 meats selections, but as usual, we recommend booking a time before the day to avoid disappointing the dads, especially when we are offering a FREE PINT to them all if they eat with us on the day. And just to remind all directory readers, if you would like to become a member, just ask one of our helpful bar staff for an application form. Although non members are very welcome here in the clubhouse. Our family friendly club has plenty to do and we are always looking for ways to entertain everyone, so if you have any ideas on what you would like to happen up here, then please don’t hesitate to let us know! We always do our best to keep everyone happy and look forward to seeing you all here over the summer months to enjoy our facilities. If you are new to the area and would like to know more about our social and sports clubs, just call the office for more info.
