ISSUE
Hello and welcome to the June issue of the directory. I am still waiting for my invitation to the Queens unofficial Birthday Party on June 12th, maybe it got lost in the post. Oh well, I will carry on looking for that special hat to wear, and if all else fails I could wear it to Ladies Day at the Races in Newmarket on July 7th, so all is not lost! Anyway, with the Queens Birthday in mind, we have a very chocolatey birthday cake for our recipe this month on page 44, even if you are not celebrating at Buckingham Palace, this will go down a treat with your own family. Locality Monies
2016/17 monies have now come into force as from 1st April, The Town councillors Allocation has been increased from £1,000 to £2,500. This means there is more to go around, your town councillors are: Cllr Patsy Warby, Cllr Pete Thompson, Cllr Clive Springette. I shall give contact details at the end of this notice. The Borough Locality monies are also available, borough councillors are Cllr Terry Buckle, Cllr Peter Thompson and Cllr Frank Warby each have £2,500. That together with the town councillor’s monies makes a total of £15,000 to be spent on good causes in our community. NEW SCHOOL Most of you will have heard that the school will not be ready in September, the latest I have heard that it will now be January, the first 200 students will now go to St James until the school opens. I don’t have any further information and I don’t like to speculate, more when I know the facts.

A charity set up to further enhance the care and support offered to patients at West Suffolk Hospital has undergone a rename and rebrand. The My WiSH Charity has today been launched to support fundraising and donations for every aspect of the Hospital. Formerly West Suffolk Hospital Charity, the new-look charity will be run in exactly the same way and with the same emphasis on supporting every single donor. One difference will be the introduction of a new mascot – Dr Edmund. r ndraising Manage Edmund with Fu New Mascot Dr Sue Smith
“We are quite unique compared to many charities in that we support so many different areas of health and wellbeing. Funds can be raised to support the youngest members of the community to the oldest and our fundraisers and donors can choose to support wherever they wish. And we are here to support that wish.” Sue admitted the role of a charity supporting a local hospital was becoming more crucial. She explained: “The hospital costs £500,000 every day to run - that’s £5 a second. The Macmillan Unit alone costs £1.5 million a year to run. “West Suffolk Hospital will always give you the best care but by fundraising we can help to ensure that the equipment and facilities are the best they can be and help to provide specialist equipment that make lives easier for both patients and staff. “Every single person in our community has either needed the hospital in their lifetime or knows someone who has. We are not here to bridge any gaps, we are here to enhance the care and support we can offer to the community.”
Sue Smith, fundraising manager for the My WiSH Charity, explained: “The support we have received for West Suffolk Hospital Charity from our generous local community has been phenomenal. “We now feel it was the right time to give the Charity a facelift and also to give a sense of ownership to donors as it is their local hospital. “It might be ‘My Wish’ to support the Hospital’s Macmillan Unit, or Rainbow Ward or ForgetMe-Not Dementia Campaign.
With the likes of a world record attempt and It’s a Bury Knockout on the horizon, My WiSH Charity will continue to organise a number of events to support the hospital as well as helping people who want to fundraise every step of the way. Sue added: “We have over 90 funds within the charity supporting not just the main areas such as Neonatal or the Macmillan Unit but also the stroke unit, paediatric diabetes, critical care and orthopaedics to name just a few. This is the legacy for anyone who chooses to support My WiSH Charity.”

After a lengthy application and registration process, I have managed to secure a community defibrillator which has now been installed in the Community Centre. Following last year’s elections, we were seeking some new projects for our locality funds and the idea came after my partner, Donna, attended a first aid course for work. My father had also been ill with cardiac issues, so it was also a subject close to my heart (excuse the pun)! We realised that there wasn’t a defibrillator in the community amenities, so I approached the community centre to host the equipment. As our locality money has to be matched from other sources, the British Heart Foundation seemed to be the obvious choice for funding, but when I approached them they agreed to pay for the full bill. They have been wonderful and I’d like to publicly thank them for their support in Moreton Hall. Kerrie Swadling from Moreton Hall Community Centre pictured with myself handing over the Difibrillator.
The defibrillator is situated in the foyer of the community centre opposite the Post Office entrance. We will move it outside the doors for greater accessibility overnight once a suitable cabinet is sourced. Please familiarise yourself with it’s location on your next visit.
I can confirm that I hold a borough councillor’s surgery in the community centre on the first Saturday of each month between 10am and 12pm. I can be found in the meeting room at the back of the building, or if that is hired out I will be in the side bar of the clubroom. Please come along with any issues you may have and Frank and I will do our best to resolve them. 14 | JUNE 2016
On a beautiful sunny evening our President Jenny Taylor welcomed members to our Annual General Meeting. During the meeting the Committee members were introduced and a new President was elected for the coming year. We also voted on the two Resolutions proposed for the National Meeting in Brighton. Jenny is our delegate. Our speaker was Lesley Linden, a Triathlon, who wheeled her cycle in dressed in cycling gear. She represented Great Britain at the 2015 Alcobendas ETU Sprint & Standard Distance Duathlon European Championships and the 2016 Kalkar ETU Duathlon European Championships for her age group. She told us her story, diversifying from being a school PE Instructor, volunteering at the 2012 Olympic Games as a “Games Maker” and now her current passion. She was an inspirational speaker and spoke about the “This Girl Can” nationwide campaign to get women and girls moving, regardless of shape, size and ability. Some of our members are already cyclists and have signed up for WOW (Women on Wheels), Bury St Edmunds charity event on 5 July. Can we be inspired to get more active? At our next meeting we will be celebrating the Queen’s 90th Birthday.

from Moreton Hall Residents Association On 4th May I attended the inaugural meeting of The Bury Assembly of Associations. This was a meeting organised by the Borough Council to bring together the local Residents and Community Associations to discuss common points of interest and to help each other tackle problems as a group rather than as a single entity. It was decided to meet twice yearly, unless additional meetings were deemed necessary. The next meeting will be in October. The following week I attended the regular Our Place meeting with our County Councillors. Most of the meeting was taken up with a presentation by the new Operational Highways Officer Mark Stevens who promises to forge a better relationship between the SCC and their contractors Keir with a view to becoming more proactive and less reactive. The most efficient way to report pot holes and pavement defects is via the reporting tool which can be found on the SCC web site. On 13th May I attended a public meeting to fight against the closure of our Crown Post Office in Bury and to move it to the second floor of W.H.Smith. This very well attended meeting, was wholeheartedly against the proposed move, and it was agreed to continue lobbying against this closure.
The Committee are very disappointed that the two Bury St. Edmunds County Councillors who are members of the SCC cabinet voted in favour of the implementation of Fire Service cuts, contrary to the overwhelming wishes of those residents who responded to the consultation. We take this opportunity to congratulate those responsible for giving us a University for the County. Long may it grow and prosper. The next meeting of the Democratic renewal working party (boundaries and Parish Council) will take place on Monday 23rd May at 17 00. I hope to attend and will report to the Committee. There are several ongoing issues for which I cannot give you information due to the need to meet publishing deadlines. W hat’s been happening at...
ABBOTS GREEN Community Primary School It’s been another fabulous month at Abbots Green with children across the school taking part in many more memorable activities. Year 4 children had a successful residential visit to Kingswood, Norfolk. For the majority this was the first time that these children had stayed away from home without their parents, and that alone was a huge step. Fortunately the weather was extremely kind to all for the duration of the visit and the two days of activities proved to be both fun and challenging – resulting in a lot of sleepy children on the coach on the way home! Today our entire Key Stage 2 children (and staff) have arrived at school dressed as Ancient Greeks to support the children’s learning as part of this term’s project - “Faster, Higher, Stronger.” During the day the children will be taking part in a variety of activities including: food

tasting, Greek architecture modelling, Greek writing and battle-scene silhouettes. Early Years children have their parents in school this morning to work together on Olympic outdoor activities including javelin, races and parachute games and indoor activities of clay medal making, creating Olympic bunting and treasure hunts. All supporting our current project. The school clubs are in full swing this term with a range of activities being offered to children across the school – including French, Spanish, Hockey, Art, Craft, Gardening, Choir, Performing Arts and Knitting! Our Eco-Committee also undertook a very special mission with Suffolk Housing and have visited their new premises on Skyliner Way to give their own views and ideas on the best use of their woodland area. As always there is a real buzz of activity about the school!

Woodlands Way Pond
T
his month found Woodland Ways pond dipping at various locations around Moreton Hall. This is a simple and efficient way of monitoring the wildlife in a pond, and requires the minimum of equipment, just a fine net, a shallow tray to fill with water, and a pencil and paper for recording your finds. The ponds around the estate are now at least ten years old, some two or three centuries old, and are supporting the species that are drawn to colonise a pond of this age. In earlier years, when new, the pond will have hosted the early arrivals, species that like bare sediment and no large predators. As the pond matures, these species are replaced by others, a natural process called succession. Among the commonest finds in a plantrich pond like some on Moreton Hall ours
is the lesser water boatman. This insect has long, hairy hind legs, like oars, so that it can effectively swim across the surface of the water. They can remain under water for a while by collecting air which they then carry around as a bubble on their body. Woodland Ways Pond, just under the underpass from the end of Lawson Place, had clear water and plenty of smooth newts feasting of a myriad of small pond invertebrates such as the harmless water fleas. We think that at least fifty newts were in the pond in May, with eggs found stuck to underwater leaves. Other ponds, such as the one in Pond Covert and by Moreton Hall Pub, contained filthy water and little aquatic life as a result of many years of an over-abundance of ducks and fish, sustained by copious daily amounts of bread.

Preventing sun damage is much more than just a cosmetic issue – protecting your skin could save your life. More and more cases of skin cancer are being diagnosed every day in the UK. Many of those cases might have been avoided, however, with proper preventive care. Sunscreen is key, but effective coverage requires more effort than just slopping some lotion on when you arrive at the beach. Follow these tips to keep your skin healthy and sunburn-free... Don’t forget to use sunscreen even when your day keeps you indoors. Glass windows protect against sunburncausing UVB rays but don’t stop UVA rays, which suppress the immune system and result in wrinkles and brown spots. Be especially vigilant on days you will be driving a lot, as UVA rays can also penetrate car windshields and windows. Don’t just apply sunscreen to the skin on your face. Even if you’re not at the beach or pool, it’s especially important to apply sunscreen to your hands, décolletage, forearms, lips, and ears. These areas also receive sun exposure and are not only quick to show signs of aging, they are also vulnerable to the development of melanomas (cancerous tumours). Don’t assume a “water-resistant” or “waterproof” sunscreen will last longer. Even these formulas will wear off after 30 minutes or more spent in the water or after excessive sweating. They can also easily rub off when you towel-dry after a swim. Don’t let shade give you a false sense of security. You’re not safe from sun exposure in winter, either: Snow can reflect 80 percent of the sun’s rays. The sun’s rays can not only penetrate through umbrellas and straw shades, they can also bounce off sand, water, concrete, and other reflective surfaces.
Don’t panic if you get sunburned. Most burns can be treated with cool baths, moisturizers, over-the-counter hydrocortisone creams, and an anti-inflammatory, such as aspirin or ibuprofen. However, if you also have a headache, chills, or a fever, you JUNE be suffering from heatstroke as well. Seek medical help immediately if this is the case. Do apply sunscreen (SPF 15 or greater) every day of the year. On a grey day up to 80 percent of the sun’s ultraviolet rays can still pass through clouds, Do slather it on before you go outside. For maximum effectiveness, sunscreen needs to be fully absorbed into your skin. Apply it at least 15 to 30 minutes before heading outdoors. Do stay out of the sun in the middle of the day. The sun’s rays are at their strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., so direct sun exposure is best avoided during that time period. Do wear sun-protective clothing. Several clothing brands use fabrics that provide added sun protection. In addition, lightweight, long-sleeved shirts, pants, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses are also recommended. JUNE 2016 | 21

DIABETES: a new education service for carers

12th 1 June 2 8th 016 DUET diabetes is a local company, based on the Suffolk/Cambridgeshire border, which was established in 2015. The partnership of Lynne Reedman and Helen Stephen was born out of the desire to provide high quality diabetes education and training to those working in care and residential homes. Staff in care homes provide an invaluable service to frail and older people and there is a great deal of evidence to suggest that staff may not be equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to care adequately for people with diabetes. England’s first care home diabetes audit (carried out by the Institute of Diabetes for Older People, IDOP) was published in June 2014. Barbara Young, the former Chief Executive of Diabetes UK, at the time said “the findings of this first England-wide audit of care homes are deeply worrying.” She also commented “…many people in care homes do not have regular access to a healthcare professional and are often looked after by unqualified carers who, due to lack of training, may not even have the basic understanding of diabetes.” In West Suffolk there are a total of 47 care homes and the majority will have residents who have diabetes needing particular 22 | JUNE 2016
care. Unlike the provision of dementia care, there are no mandatory requirements for diabetes skills or training. However towards the end of 2015 the Care Quality Commission (CQC), who is responsible for inspecting care homes, published new “guidance for CQC staff: inspecting the quality of care for residents with diabetes mellitus living in care homes”. This document states what good diabetes care looks like, with one of the elements being access to good quality diabetes education and training for staff. Nicola Delglyn Osteomyologist Physical & Nutritional Therapy This is Part 2 of my 2 part series – Soft Tissue/ Sports Injuries. Apart from advising people on exercise, nutrition and healthy lifestyles, my time in clinic is used to help people recover from back pain and soft tissue injuries caused by taking part in sport “sports injuries” or everyday activities like gardening, tripping over or a car accident. Some regular injuries I see and treat are back and neck injuries, sprains and strains of legs, arms, ankles, knee injuries, swollen muscles, Achilles tendon injuries, pain along the shin bone, shoulder pain, headaches. What is a soft tissue injury? A soft tissue injury is an injury to a muscle, ligament, tendon or piece of cartilage and can involve nerves. The injury occurs when a ligament, tendon or muscle over-stretches in a way it’s not used to. A jolt in a car accident or a trip down the stairs can cause soft tissue damage. Playing sport or exercising using a poor training technique, wearing improper gear, bad posture, being out of condition or not concentrating fully on the task in hand can also result in soft tissue injuries. One area that is often forgotten is the important of warming up or stretching enough before you play, exercise or take on heavy everyday tasks, even gardening and housework should require a warm up of the back and legs to prevent the onset of a back strain. Painful and frustrating, soft tissue injuries can affect just about every aspect of your everyday life. They can cause headaches, dizziness and

Treatments to beat pain for pain, which can make it difficult to work, to exercise and to socialise. They can affect such basic things as sitting down or getting to sleep. A side effect of such injuries can be feelings of depression and isolation as people wonder if they will ever get better. The good news is that with the correct diagnosis and treatment, most soft tissue injuries will get better with time. On average it can take up to 3 months to recover, however it can depend on a number of factors such as your age, your lifestyle including your nutrition and hydration, your general fitness and the type of injury you have sustained. In general, injuries get better if you get moving again and return to daily activities as soon as possible, even with an injured back, you are far better to gently exercise and stay active than sit all day. Remember, as you get better and get moving again you will have good days and bad days. This is normal. However, if your injury hasn’t improved within three months, talk to your doctor or trained practitioner about the steps you need to take to get moving again. What Should I Do if I Get Injured? When an injury happens, you need to be prepared to act quickly. I am usually equipped with a well-stocked physio/first aid bag, but if you’ve not got the luxury, make sure you have an ice spray, instant ice pack or bag of peas in the house. The primary goal of soft-tissue/“sports” first aid is to stop activity and prevent further damage. Most injuries will require immediate treatment and the sooner treatment is given the

Never try to “work through” the pain of a soft tissue injury. Stop playing, exercising or working when you feel pain, carrying on will only cause more harm. When soft tissue is damaged, it will immediately begin the healing process, so you might see swelling, bruising and feel pain, there may also be loss of movement which limits the muscles.
• Ice - applying cold therapy (ice pack/packet of peas in a thin damp towel) to an acute injury reduces swelling and pain. Apply cold to the affected area every two hours for no more than 20 minutes at a time. Allow the skin temperature to return to normal before icing again. You can ice an acute injury several times a day for up to three days
Please note: If you have an open wound, notice any deformity in the joint or bone, the joint doesn’t feel “normal” or feels unstable, you lose consciousness, you feel any numbness, severe pain, an old injury hurts, aches or swells you should seek medical advice as soon as possible.
• Compression - put even pressure (compression) on the injured area to help reduce swelling. You can use an elastic wrap, special boot, air cast or splint. Personally I use kinesio tape in clinic (the bright coloured tape seen applied to athletes on the TV)
If you don’t have any of these signs, chances are it may be safe to treat the injury at home. If the pain or other symptoms get worse, you should call your doctor. I advise my patients, whilst they are waiting to visit me in clinic, to use the PRICE (Prevention, Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation) method to relieve pain, reduce swelling, and promote healing. By following these four steps right after the injury occurs, and for at least 48 hours you are giving your body a great start to self-healing:
• Elevation – put the injured area on a pillow, at a level above your heart to help reduce swelling
• Protection – stop the activity immediately and protect the injured part form additional damage
I personally prefer for my patients to come into clinic as soon after the initial injury so that I can fully assess the injury, the cause and put together a rehabilitation programme to get them back to activity quickly. A typical treatment would also include ice-treatment, heat treatment, gentle mobilization and strapping techniques to ensure the best possible outcome and speedy recovery. I also advise them on how to optimize their recovery by following a specially designed healing nutrition programme.
• Rest - reduce your regular activities. If you’ve injured your foot, ankle, or knee, take weight off of it. A crutch can help. If your right foot or ankle is injured, use the crutch on the left side. If your left foot or ankle is injured, use the

The US open at Oakmont Country Club being this month’s main event, the question is who will win at this great venue? Oakmont remains perhaps the most difficult course in North America, with 210 deep bunkers (personified by the Church Pews), hard and slick greens that slope away from the player, and tight fairways requiring the utmost precision.
• Fine the rhythm Nothing ruins my timing more than taking the club back too far and too fast, but this can also work the other way and be too slow. Find a comfortable pace for your swing, you should never feel like your swinging at 100% effort. It’s a golf swing not a hit! • Hold the finish
If your rhythm is good you will remain balanced until your ball comes to rest on green again. I know what you’re thinking, why only three points. However, alignment, posture and sound rhythm will give you a better chance of making solid contact. Calling all Landlords and Tenants Do not get caught out by the new EPC standards Despite the scope for argument, MEES do not necessarily need to be a source of confrontation. Both landlord and tenant can benefit from the regulations where a co-operative approach is taken. On the one hand, a landlord should be pro-actively looking to ensure that the asset is protected against the rising thresholds of energy efficiency, the financial penalties associated with non-compliance and the reduction in value of buildings that do not comply with MEES. On the other hand, a tenant will benefit from reduced outgoings and better efficiency, while keeping in mind concerns addressed above should they have the ability to underlet. Existing tenants may therefore wish to harness a strong relationship with the landlord to achieve the benefits early compliance can bring.

rom the 1st April 2018 it will be unlawful to grant a new lease of energy inefficient commercial or domestic properties in England and Wales. The new regulations, which have no impact on sales, set out minimum energy efficiency standards (MEES) and in essence make it unlawful to grant a new lease of a property that has an energy performance rating of below E.
Fundamentally this seems like a landlord problem – the legal obligation to comply, and the penalties of non-compliance fall at their door. However, the new rules will have ranging implications on both the grant of a new lease and, in certain cases, under continuing leases. For new leases the effect is obvious; for continuing leases the regulations will apply, for example, where a tenant benefits from a right to underlet. The burden will then fall on the tenant to ensure the property complies with MEES which could in turn have serious financial implications on the value of the underletting. In negotiating new leases, MEES has the potential to be contentious, as the terms sought by the landlord in a new lease may attempt to shift the burden of compliance onto the tenant. Explicitly, this could be in the shape of passing the burden of work required to bring the property up to the minimum standard, or passing the financial penalties onto the tenant. However, tenants should be wary of more subtle restrictions on their rights, such as onerous clauses requiring access to

While there is still plenty of time before the regulations come into force, many landlords are quite sensibly assessing the need for a proactive approach to evaluating and confronting the risk MEES present. It is also important that tenants are fully aware of these approaching restrictions, and the implications it could have on their new or existing lease. Only then can both parties make an informed decision and reap the benefits from such awareness in commercial negotiations. Chocolate Birthday Cake We are celebrating Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday with this delicious recipe! Ingredients: The sponge 6 egg yolks 2 eggs 115g/4 oz caster sugar 55g/2 oz plain flour 25g/1 oz cocoa powder 55g/2 oz melted butter The topping and filling 600ml/1 pint double cream 450g/1 lb dark chocolate
Method:
Preheat the oven to 180c 8 inch sponge tin greased and lined with parchment paper. At least 6 hours before baking the cake prepare the filling. Melt 230g/8 oz of the chocolate and bring to the boil 300ml/½ pint of the cream. Pour the cream onto the chocolate and whisk it until smooth, then refrigerate until set. Turn on the oven to 180 degrees and set a pan (large enough to hold a mixing bowl) half full of hot water on the stove and bring the water to a boil. Line a 8 inch sponge tin with parchment paper and grease. In a mixing bowl add the eggs, yolks and sugar and whisk together. Place over the bowl of hot water to allow the mixture to heat up. Sieve the flour and cocoa and set aside. Whisk the egg mixture until it doubles in volume and then fold in the butter and flour mixture. Spoon the mix into the 8 inch cake tin and bake for about 20 minutes until the sponge springs back when pressed. Remove from the oven onto a cooling wire and make the topping while the sponge cools. Melt the remaining 230g/8 oz of chocolate and bring to the boil the remaining ½ pint of cream. Pour the cream onto the chocolate and whisk it until smooth and then set aside off the heat. Slice the sponge into three discs and spread the filling onto the bottom two discs and re-assemble. Add the remaining chocolate mix to the hot topping and whisk in. Place the sponge back onto the cooling wire and ladle the topping over the sponge allowing it to run down the sides. Cool the cake for at least 2 hours before decorating with chocolate and serving. 44 | JUNE 2016

Notification of Forthcoming Roadworks and Road Closures in Mount Road and Lady Miriam Way, Great Barton/Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk Taylor Wimpey East Anglia will shortly be undertaking works in Mount Road (to the east of Lady Miriam Way) and Lady Miriam Way, Bury St Edmunds to install new highway drainage, a new footpath/cycleway, carriageway surfacing and traffic calming measures as part of their Lark Grange development. The works will necessitate the use of temporary traffic signals as well as two overnight road closures to ensure that they are carried out in accordance with current health and safety guidelines. The temporary traffic signals will be manually controlled at peak times to minimise congestion and when the road closures are in place a diversion route will be signposted. At present, the anticipated commencement date for the works is Monday 13 June 2016, with the anticipated period of works in Mount Road being seven weeks and those in Lady Miriam Way being a further six weeks (including Saturdays and Sundays). This works period is subject to favourable weather conditions and what is found once works commence. At present, it is intended that the overnight road closures (on Mount
Road only) will be on 1, 2 and 3 July as well as 29, 30 and 31 July, albeit these dates will also be dependent upon the successful completion of the preceding works. The final element of the works, which will include the installation of a new footpath/cycleway in Lady Miriam Way, is currently scheduled to start on 1 August and should be completed by 9 September. These latter works will be carried out using temporary traffic signals. During the works, access to properties will be available but controlled by staff on site. Access for emergency services will be maintained at all times. Advance roadworks notification boards will also be erected. Inconvenience and disruption will be kept to a minimum during the works.

I
’ve taken on my fair share of DIY projects, some more successful than others – but no major calamities… yet! However, since I impulse bought a few days ago, literally ‘a lorry load’ of materials for my latest venture, I have to admit I am now getting a bit apprehensive. It all started when I came in from the garage the other day and declared it was a shocking waste of space, full of junk and stuff not seen or used in years. This lead onto the discussion of how it could be a great extra play area. I had a vision of the kids bringing mates home, to hang out and listen to tapes, play on the mega drive, drink alcopops, or whatever it is teenagers do nowadays – admittedly I’m a little bit out of touch?! The more I thought about it, the better it sounded. They get their own space to

make noise and mess about without ‘boring’ parents being in ear shot. I get a house free from teenage noise and clutter. It’s a winwin right?

Well, that was it. A masterplan had materialised and needed to be actioned immediately. Sure, my eldest is only 8, but time flies, and accounting for a few inevitable delays (industrial disputes, Great crested newts, trips to A&E etc…) I reckoned I might as well get started right away.
As I speak my Gantt chart and lists are dynamic and changing hourly. The initial, and hopefully worst, stages are nearing completion. Only time will tell, but I remain optimistic. Who knows, if I complete this before 2022 I can set up a 360o projector tv and watch the Qatar World Cup in all its bizarre glory, or maybe install a 12ft snooker table?
As with all these things, the key to efficient delivery is in fastidious preparation. That is to say, several evenings spent hogging the iPad, staring at storage solutions, flooring, chipboard, screws, light bulbs… and basically all the really interesting stuff. This ran parallel with daytime activities, clearing the garage - a mammoth task. Luckily I had a 2 year old to ‘help’
I mean, if they can build a brand new high school, from foundations up, in 10 months, then I should be able to do this in a few years? Oh wait, they couldn’t actually build it on time could they? If only they had my project management skills… and maybe an enthusiastic toddler to help.

Saffron Sitters offers permanent, temporary, emergency and flexible assistance to find experienced and vetted nannies, babysitters, dog sitters/walkers, house/pet sitters, elderly companions and domestic cleaners. The business was set up by Helen Orsborne, whilst she was in her 2nd year of university, to earn a little bit of extra money and she never dreamed it would be as popular as it has proven to be. Make a shirt to go on a Fathers’ day card using simple origami techniques 1 From patterned paper cut a rectangle 13cm x 20cm (wrapping paper works well)

Fold in half lengthways, open out and fold edges in half again towards the centre

London Pride
So you want to avoid empty borders filling with weeds. One plant you could consider is London Pride which once established can form a dense carpet. They are easy to grow in any type of soil but are ideal for deep or partial shaded borders. You can easily increase your stock of these plants by digging up a few each year in spring or early summer and placing in an empty border. There is very little work involved in maintaining them. If you wish cut off the flowers when they have died. London Pride is a member of the saxifraga family of perennials and is also known as none so pretty. Small pink-flushed white flowers form around early summer to a height of 30cm. The glossy green leaves are evergreen.

the crafty foxes
The other weekend my mum and I decided to go to a nest ring making workshop that was held upstairs in Denny Bros by ‘The Crafty Foxes’. My mum saw it on Facebook and signed us up. We went and Michelle (the lady who runs it) showed us how to make the piece of jewellery – she made it look really easy! Only a certain amount of people could go, depending on how complexed it is depends how many people Michelle allows. Me and my mum went and had a really great time, we had lots of fun making the nest rings. Although it was hard (and a bit frustrating at times!) it was also really enjoyable and we giggled lots! We found that working together helped us to make 2 lovely nest rings each. We had previously been to another workshop where we made a pair of earrings and a necklace together. So if you like being creative and being able to make something a little different, keep a look out for ‘The Crafty Foxes’ workshops.
oreo milkshakes Occasionally when I’ve been to town, I’ve been lucky enough to have a Starbucks milkshake which are really delicious. I don’t always have enough pocket money to buy one so I came home one day and decided to try and make my own milkshake like those at Starbucks! They are much cheaper and fun to make and decorate. What you will need is: 7-8 Oreos, 1 cup of milk, 1 cup of ice and whipped cream. Firstly you

need to get your blender out and blitz the ice so that you don’t have big chunks (that is optional depending how you like your ice). Secondly you need to add your milk and your Oreos (but leave two on the side) and blend that until you think it is done. Once you have completed that pour it in a cup. Add your whipped cream and then on top of that break the Oreos you put to one side and plop them on top, and ta-da you have your very own Starbucks!
geocaching
All the time me and my family go on bike rides out and about to Thurston and other places. Someone told my mum about this thing called ‘Geocaching’, it is basically where you use an App that gives you co-ordinates to bike to. Once you get to the navigated place you hunt high and low around that area looking for a little box. In that little box there should be a few little toys and a logbook, you can take a toy but you have to put one back in for another person to have. You can also write in the logbook detailing your geocaching name and date. My family and I tried it the other day and it was a good adventure. It gives you more than just a bike ride, it makes like a little treasure hunt!

To play or not to play?
that is the question!
Just the other day I found myself sitting on a swing in the park, leisurely enjoying the company of one of my best friends while my 4 year old sat playing the train driver on an imaginary trip to the beach and my 8 month old baby boy giggled joyfully at being pushed on the swing for his very first time. Forwards and backwards I stretched my legs as I rose higher and higher up into the air. The sun was shining brightly and the chilly spring breeze brushed across my cheeks. I smiled and my baby was smiling too. One adult, one baby; both enjoying the simple, playful act of swinging through the air on a bright, spring morning. ‘Play’ seems to be the current hot topic for our society’s children; the heated debate of whether or not our education system is robbing children of their childhood and play is one you cannot help but be party to. Whatever your opinion, I’m sure we can all agree, play is a vital ingredient to the life of any healthy, happy children we know or would like to raise. But what about in the life of any healthy, happy adults we know or would like to become? There are some fabulous and inspiring quotes out there from some of history’s greats. The children are split by age into small groups Early Stages 4-6yrs 9.30am – 12.30pm. Main School 6-18yrs 10.00am – 4.00pm Monday 25th – Friday 29th July and/or Monday 1st August – Friday 5th August. Stagecoach is for EVERYONE, of any ability, to come along make new friends, be creative, gain confidence and have fun! All teachers hold an enhanced DBS which is part of our safeguarding children. Your child will experience a wide range of performance skills and styles, with lessons in Singing, Dance and Drama. Each week this will culminate into a Show on the Friday, for each age group. The shows will be Jungle Book, Peter Pan, 13, Hairspray, Little Mermaid, Lion King, Fame and Rock of Ages.
Stagecoach also runs through term time, with classes running on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and fits easily around school time. Each term Stagecoach puts on a performance where the pupils have a chance to perform on stage with costumes. This year the children have performed Annie, a Showcase at the Regal, Shakespeare evening with Romeo & Juliet, Macbeth and Mid Summers Nights Dream. Stagecoach is currently rehearsing for a Queens 90th Birthday Celebration evening on 18th June and Grease in July. Christ Church MORETON HALL June 2016 will be one of the most important months in the history of the United Kingdom. While we celebrate the 90th birthday of our wonderful Queen, we also have a decision to make at the referendum. Whether we vote to leave the European Union or to remain in it, life in this country will change. Because we are not just deciding whether or not we would be better off economically or politically on our own, we are deciding something far more fundamental than that – the nature of Britain itself. Does the group of islands which makes up the British archipelago contain a separate and distinct group of peoples who, while they are geographically close to Europe, are in fact a completely different from their neighbours? Or are we part of a much larger group of people who call themselves Europeans? When we refer to ourselves as British we also mean English, Scottish, Welsh or Irish. The same idea lies behind the concept of being European. We all know there are Germans, French, Poles, Italians, Spanish, Portuguese and British, but somehow they are all together as Europeans as well. What we decide in June will fix, probably for at least another hundred years, the nature of the British people. Are we separate and distinct and very different from those who live near us, or are we part of a much larger family, each with its own important history but nonetheless united by economic, political, social and historical ties? There is not time to repeat all the different arguments which have been thrown about at the moment, but I do note a 82 | JUNE 2016
disturbing aspect of the debate. As it progresses it is becoming more vitriolic, bitter and divisive. My prayer is that whatever the outcome of the vote, it will be decided by a large majority one way or the other. If vote to stay or go and it is close, it will lead to a great deal of recrimination on both sides. Was one side better funded than the other? Did one side tell the truth while the other lied? Although the British experiment of bringing together four different people groups and making one whole nation has been largely successful, we do have a capacity for arguing amongst ourselves in such a way as to jeopardise all that we have. I hope that, having made our decision, we will all agree to abide by it and put the result, whichever way it goes, behind us. I also hope that whatever the decision may be, it is not only best for this generation but for all the generations that follow us. An impoverished, embittered and disenfranchised Britain will not be a good neighbour to anyone whether she remains within or without the European Union. However, having said this was one of the most important decisions this country will make in all its long history, there is another decision which is even more important which stands at everybody’s elbow. That is the decision about God himself. I know many of you who read this column, although you are not church-goers; do have a sense of and a faith in God. You may not know Him very well, but you know that He is there and you know that He acts in your life. Somehow you never quite get round to following up on what you know to be true.
In the way that the referendum gives us an opportunity to finally make up our minds, there never seems to be a referendum on God for us as individuals. What do we believe? And if we do believe something, what are we going to do about it? The decision whether or not to follow God not only has consequences for this life here on earth, but also for eternity. If we follow Him now, not only do we get to know Him better and His family of believers, but also we become aware of His presence in every part of our life, changing, correcting, helping and improving. But more than that, the decision you make will have a great deal of bearing on your final destination. In the past God has clearly guided this country, maybe if we ask him he will guide this country again as we decide on all our futures in the referendum. I have just come back from Israel, which is a country dominated by three very different religions, and a country that has torn itself apart throughout its history because of its people’s inability to be reconciled and work together. This has ruined what is a very beautiful country, full of historic buildings, and wonderful places. So this month of June, please take time to pray and to vote, because you must not be indifferent to the decision that will affect the lives of everybody on this island and its children for generations to come. But equally, do not be indifferent to the call of God upon your life and take the opportunity to find out more about Him and if possible to follow Him yourself.

Once again I take this opportunity to thank the Moreton Hall estate for its generous support of Christian Aid week. Thank you for giving everyone who called at your house with a red envelope such a warm welcome. Christ Church, Moreton Hall, does not collect the entire estate, some of it is collected by other churches in the town, and so what we collect only represented part of the total giving that goes on here. At the time of writing, we do not have the figures, it is 20th May and the week has not finished yet, but as soon as I have them I will let you know. And, of course, a special thank you goes to all those people who worked so hard organising teams in Bury St. Edmunds and across Moreton Hall. To all the volunteers who deliver and collect envelopes – thank you all for your hard work and for the thousands of pounds that you raise and for the many lives you save and improve.

Air Crash in Mediterranean As I am writing this piece, the news has been breaking of the accident involving an Air Egypt aircraft which has crashed in the Mediterranean. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and relatives of the passengers and crew who have lost their lives and we hope and pray they will be comforted and supported in their loss.

This is a very sobering event for me and the fourteen people who flew with me from Israel to London within a few hours of this incident. Budwell manages to take over the studio, and during a tense standoff broadcast to millions on live TV, he orders Gates to find out what happened.
