LIVING FENCE The photo shows a living fence made by Fred Brown, Fred decided to do this as he says ‘to keep his hand in’ after retiring. This 200 metre long fence will grow to a height of two metres and makes a lovely home for some of our wildlife, it also helps to cut down the noise of cars and HGV’s and takes away some of the carbon emissions. Fred intends to make one living fence a year, I say well done Fred and thank you for helping to keep our woodlands tidy.
LOCALITY MONEY
Just to update you on what I have spent my locality money on this year, I had an allowance of £2,500 from St Edmundsbury Borough Council and £1,000 from the town council, spent as follows: £2,000 to the sculpture on the roundabout in remembrance of the US servicemen who were stationed on Rougham Airfield during WW2. £500 to our own Choir, this is a community led mixed choir which meets every Monday in Christchurch, the choir is open to all and welcomes new members. My town budget of £600 was spent on a disabled and fire door for the meeting place for the hard of hearing and deaf community in Northgate Street, I think a very worthy group. The last £400 was donated to a new sport called tchukaball to send their team to an away game. A new tranche of locality funding becomes available in April 2016.
Youth Club Update Sadly, our Valentine Disco was not very well attended, however those who attended had a fabulous night, plenty to eat and drink, many thanks to the helpers on the night. Our next event will be a night at the Ten Pin Bowling club, we will be asking mums and dads to drop off and collect their children to and from Bury Bowl, Eastgate Street.

Community Governance Review for Moreton Hall This is very important, there are several issues affecting Moreton Hall in the current CGR, including whether the new Taylor Wimpey Homes, the new School and the Sports complex should be in Bury St Edmunds Parish or Rushbrooke with Rougham Parish council. Potentially the biggest change, however, could result from a proposal from Suffolk County Cllr Trevor Beckwith to create, a new parish council for Moreton Hall. As opinion was divided in the earlier stages of the review, the Borough Council has decided to test a final recommendation to keep the current arrangements as they are i.e. that Moreton Hall will stay part of Bury St Edmunds, served by the town council. However the Council can change this recommendation if there is clear evidence from the consultation that there is strong support for a new parish for Moreton Hall instead. So it is really important that the people tell the council which of the two options they prefer before the deadline of 27th April.
The two options are: 1. Moreton Hall stays in Bury St Edmunds Parish ( i.e. you support the Boroughs Recommendation) or 2. Set up a new parish for Moreton Hall ( i.e. you disagree with the Recommendation. There is an easy response form on the council website where you can make your choice between the two options go to www.westsuffolk.gov.uk/cgr. Please use response form for Issue 7, if you want to comment on the parish council debate. There is also a response form for the ~2031~ growth site (issue 4) and Suffolk Business Park (issue 6) alternatively, you can write to the council the elections Manager, St. Edmundsbury Borough Council, West Suffolk House, Western Way, Bury St Edmunds IP33 3YU Please take time to tell the Council which option you prefer before the April deadline, this is really important to local democracy.

Poignant charity calendar supports Hospital’s Macmillan Unit
An inspirational charity calendar starring cancer patients – and the dedicated staff that have treated them – has helped a Bury St Edmunds salon owner raise more than £6,550 for West Suffolk Hospital’s Macmillan Unit.

Steve Trowles, owner of Stephen John, was inspired to support the Macmillan Unit after working closely with patients suffering hair loss. He teamed up with local businesswoman, Michele Bailey, on a charity calendar as well as organising a successful Christmas charity ball. The calendar saw hospital staff and patients join forces by posing alongside iconic images around the town including the Abbey Gardens, the Abbey Gate and even the town’s famed beach setting when it resided in the Arc shopping centre. After presenting the Macmillan Unit with a cheque for £6,550, Steve said: “We brought together some strong, brave and truly inspirational women as well as the caring and dedicated nurses from our local hospital. “It was such a pleasure and an honour to work with some amazing women and we are delighted to have raised so much money for such a worthy cause. I would like to thank everyone who supported us with the calendar and the charity ball.” Unit Tracy Fell, Macmillan Trowles ve Ste and er, sist d war
Over the last few years, the Stephen John salon, on Bury’s Moreton Hall estate, have worked closely with cancer patients suffering hair loss by offering advice and support every step of the way.
Steve added: “Working with the Macmillan Unit to support women going through hair loss – and helping them feel confident and beautiful – is something I find incredibly rewarding and humbling. “Losing your hair can be traumatic and overwhelming, but I hope I can help make it slightly less daunting by offering support and advice and by turning a new hair fitting into a positive experience.” As part of the calendar, which was photographed free of charge by Neil Baxter Photography, all models underwent a makeover, including wearing a new wig donated by the salon. Steve and Michele also organised a ‘winter wonderland’ charity ball at Ashlar House which saw around 250 people attend in support of the hospital. Sue Smith, fundraising manager at West Suffolk Hospital Charity, added: “We would like to thank everyone who came together so brilliantly for the charity ball and calendar in support of the Macmillan Unit at West Suffolk Hospital. “I would especially like to thank Steve Trowles and his team and our wonderful models who are a genuine inspiration.”

from Moreton Hall Residents Association Hopefully we are coming to the end of winter and we will once again start to notice all the things which can tarnish our vibrant estate, such as litter, pot holes and poor parking, and those things that affect us in our town and county. We should be able to make our feelings known through your residents association, your local and county councillors and of course you’re MP. Waste Hub When the consultation period ends 19/2/16, Suffolk County Council Infrastructure and Waste Department will feed the results to Community Liaison Group (Composition yet to be confirmed) who will propose a site and raise a planning application. The Association will keep an eye on developments. The Association has taken part in the consultation. Parking Poor parking is a big problem on this estate, together with the ill-conceived infrastructure, which produces traffic flow problems as well as short tempers. There are talks going on to move parking problems onto the county council away from the police, however this is some time away. An application by our local council for funds to construct lay-bys in Skyliner Way was rejected by the county council, but I believe other funding sources are being investigated. We are trying to arrange a meeting with the County Councillor responsible. In the meanwhile if you have a parking problem I am told it is still the responsibility of the Police, but they may not respond due to priority constraints.
Fire Service Cuts Morton Hall Residents Association has lodged its opposition to the proposed cuts which in the view of the committee go too far. We await the results of this consultation. Crown Post Office in Bury A move is afoot to close this office in town, move it to a retail site nearby and sell the building. Loving the dangerous tree
O
n Valentine’s Day, when people are persuaded by the consumer culture to spend money on demonstrations of love for each other, Woodland Ways members gave up their morning to love a magnificent ash tree. St Edmundsbury Borough Council had identified it as being at risk of falling and it was next to the footpath in Pond Covert. But it was a lovely tree, probably born in the Victorian period as were so many houses in Bury St Edmunds, and it had a high wildlife value. The woodpecker holes in its branches are suitable for bats to live in, and the decay in the trunk could support rare fungi and insects. No-one wants to be squashed by a falling tree, and the normal solution would be to fell the tree at the same time as other tree safety works by the Council in the wood and surrounding area.
Instead of moving the tree, Woodland Ways moved the path. A bramble patch, several logs and other undergrowth were cleared, a ridge of soil was dug out by hand to make a slope gentler, and the new path was surfaced with woodchips. The old section of path was closed, and you can again walk safely in Pond Covert. The path diversion is perhaps slightly less convenient than the old one as it is a less direct route, and the slope at the edge of the wood is slightly greater than some might like, but when the woodchips settle down it will be easier to use pushchairs on it. Woodland Ways apologises to anyone who is slightly inconvenienced by the diversion, including its own members, but thinks it is worth it to keep the superb tree until its natural end.

W hat’s been happening at...
ABBOTS GREEN Community Primary School Another month has flown by at Abbots Green and we cannot believe that we are already halfway through the academic year! This month the children in Years 4 and 5 had a fabulous opportunity when they met children’s author Jo Cotterill. The inspiring visit was organised by Philip Daws, Reading Champion for The Bury School’s Partnership and the children thoroughly enjoyed their time with the popular author. Jo’s latest book ‘Electrigirl’ had only just recently been released and the children avidly listened while Jo read excerpts from her book and talked to the children about life as an author.
The children in our Reception Classes had a visit out of school to a local building site where they learned more about materials as part of our whole school project “Rock, Paper, Scissors.” The building contractors, Brooks and Wood, made the site visit really memorable for the children and even inspired them to construct their own buildings on return to school later that day. The children also enjoyed spotting the first signs of Spring during their walk through the Moreton Hall Estate en route to the site. A selection of Year 4 children took part in the Bury School’s Partnership Tag Rugby competition. The children demonstrated superb team work and applied the skills that they have learnt from Mr Payne, our Year 5 teacher and P.E Leader. The team were fantastic ambassadors for Abbots Green at this event and we are exceptionally proud of them all. And finally this month... our mouths have been watering each week when we discover the tasty treats that have been conjured up in our brand new Food Technology Room by children attending our after school cookery club!

Patients and visitors to benefit from new hospital car park Patients and visitors at West Suffolk Hospital are set to benefit from 400 additional parking spaces this year as work begins on a new £2m car park project. The extra spaces, which can also be used by staff, will be available from December after contractors have remodeled the current car parks. It is hoped that the project will relieve growing pressure on hospital parking, which has resulted in patients queuing for spaces during busy times. Craig Black, executive director of resources at West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We appreciate that parking at the hospital has been an issue for some time, with patients, visitors and staff having difficulty finding spaces during peak periods. “Although we have introduced a range of initiatives which have helped, we have also seen a rise in people coming onto the site as demand for our services has increased, which is why we are keen to further increase provision. “The scheme has been carefully planned to make the most of the limited space available. At our February meeting we welcomed some new ladies. Our speaker was Jason Salisbury who talked about “Suffolk Farmhouse Cheeses”. Jason is a first generation dairy farmer. He told us his extraordinary story of how his career journey evolved. His account showed how adventurous he has been from working in different parts of the country just milking cows, being an artificial inseminator and managing a Cambridge University Farm dairy unit. It did help that his wife is a vet but it is obvious that his success has been due to hard work and a vision. He told us his story in a very humorous way. In 2004 the couple began venturing out on their own and installed a milking parlour and purpose-built dairy. Even braver was to buy a farm in 2007 which was in a dilapidated condition. A new dairy unit was planned and a milking parlour and purpose-built cheese dairy created. Whitegate Farm, Creeting St Mary was officially opened in 2009. Fast track to the present time, the business has gone from strength to strength. They have a herd of 40 milking Guernsey cows and their care is kept to a very high standard. Luxurious creamy milk is produced which lends itself to produce good quality cheese. He did explain the trials and tribulations of getting to the standard they have achieved. Three cheeses are produced, Gold, Blue and Brie with the “Suffolk Farmhouse Cheeses” label. The produce is available in various local, regional and national outlets including Farmers Markets, Farm Shops and Specialist Delicatessens. They also have a farm shop and have diversified into other products as can be seen from their website. As part of the talk we were able to sample the Suffolk Gold cheese which is a lovely golden colour with a creamy taste. It was a very enjoyable talk. One of our ladies showed a sample of a Twiddle Muff and some Twiddle Mats that some of our members might like to make for dementia patients at West Suffolk Hospital.

Treatments to beat pain for there is too much to do and with no end in sight leads to NEGATIVE STRESS. That stress, in turn, can take a toll on health as highlighted above and the ability to focus on work tasks. It can also alter how we feel about our employer; undermine accuracy and creative thinking, foster depression, resentment and feelings of paranoia about job security. The bottom line: sustained busyness is taking a toll on our health, the quality of our work along with our personal relationships.
It’s officially Spring – my favourite time of year. Seeing the daffodils, snowdrops and bluebells spring into life and the days getting longer certainly lifts my mood and helps me to de-clutter my mind. This month’s article is all about helping to lift our mood, help us feel in control of our lives and allow us to appreciate time a little more. Scientifically there are many studies that link illness and disease with STRESS. Life is all about balance, time to work, rest and play – be active in the mind and also with the body. Not so easy you say as ‘I don’t have the time’………. Looking back at the advent of the Industrial Revolution, time could suddenly be measured in output as well as minutes and hours and new advances in machinery and technology made most work easier. However over the last decade, we’ve seen the introduction of smartphones and tablets, in particular, which have rendered the term “off the clock” nearly obsolete. We all seem to be so “busy” and it’s not a surprise that at some point, most of us reach a point when we are too busy to add even one more task to our overbooked schedules. What used to be free time has been hijacked by work, classes, social events and errands. We seem to be tethered to devices that offer an unprecedented amount of information and accessibility. How many people in café’s and restaurants are texting or looking at their smartphones rather than talking to each other? This constant connectivity, combined with the feeling that

By taking a few simple steps and supporting your body with the correct nutrition you can slow down, flow in-between activities, bring mindfulness to your day and reclaim your life, even if it’s for just seconds or minutes at a time. Just “go with the FLOW”. The Mighty Mindfulness The “buzzword” of the moment and an incredibly effective tool, mindfulness is a way of being aware of what’s going on at a particular moment without assigning any judgment to what you’re feeling. By taking just a few moments throughout the workday to take a breath and regroup, can break the sometimes, crazy momentum of what’s happening around us. It will not eliminate life’s pressures, but it can help us respond to them in a calmer positive manner that benefits our heart, head, and body. It helps us recognise and step away from habitual, often unconscious emotional and physiological reactions to everyday events. It provides us with a scientifically researched approach to cultivating clarity, insight, and understanding. Over time, mindfulness brings about long-term changes in mood, levels of happiness and wellbeing. Scientific studies have shown that mindfulness not only prevents depression, but that it also positively affects the brain patterns underlying day-to-day anxiety, stress, depression and irritability so that when they arise, they dissolve away again more easily. I like to say: “go with the flow!” and here are a few simple steps for you to find your “flow”:

FEELING of being overwhelmed or panicky is the signal to step away from what you are doing, take a few deep breaths and give yourself 10 to 15 minutes to go outside, leaf through a magazine or just stare into space

LEARN to breathe, deep abdominal breathing reoxygenates the body, which slows the heartbeat and stabilizes blood pressure
•
OBSERVE the silence - don’t be a slave to Facebook, emails, text messages and the phone. Set aside a regular time-slot each day when you want to deal with them, and stick to it

WATCH what you eat and when you eat. Eat complex carbohydrates (starches), such as whole-grain products, vegetables (sweet potatoes are a great choice) and beans. Complex carbs contain fibre, which helps slow blood sugar level changes and reduce negative effects on mood
In addition, you can use some of these great foods to boost your mood, help anxiety and stress, which can be the major cause of serious pain and illnesses. Your brain needs fats to function so we need to feed it the right type of fats, you don’t want to shortchange it so go for good fat sources such as avocados, a wide range of seeds and virgin olive oil. Sweet potatoes – an excellent complex carbohydrate with a high level of tryptophan, an essential amino acid, that converts into serotonin – the feel good hormone of the brain. They are also high in beta-carotene, which boosts immunity when stress is high and fibre, which helps stabilize surges in blood sugar caused by acute stress.
Asparagus - contains high levels of vitamin B6 and folic acid, both of which help boost levels of dopamine, a substance that acts as a natural relaxant on the brain. Both these vitamins are crucial in healthy immune and nervous system functioning. Nuts – particularly walnuts and almonds are rich in omega-3 fatty acids that naturally decrease the stress hormones cortisol, which is secreted in our bodies when we are under stress, and adrenaline, which stimulates heart rate, and dilates blood vessels and air passages. Nuts are also high in vitamin B, which supplies the body with serotonin producing carbohydrates. They are also an excellent source of protein, which stabilizes blood sugar. Yoghurt is high in calcium and magnesium, minerals that help relax muscles and lower blood pressure, look for “live yoghurt” that are rich in good bacteria (acidophilus), to help stabilize and soother nervous digestive systems resulting from stress. Low sugar breakfast cereals are packed with fibre, B-vitamins and magnesium, all of which lower blood pressure, nourish nerves, brain and adrenal glands and stabilize mood by providing a surge of serotonin. Welcome back to the 19th hole, February saw us golfers have some colder temperatures to have to play in but also some lovely blue clear sky days also. This gave me the feeling that maybe just maybe the spring might be starting to appear. So this month we have the clock change to look forward to and that will lead us perfectly into what i class as the start of the season, The Masters in early April. So if you haven’t been playing or practicing much over the last few months now is the time to dust the clubs down and get in some hard work before the season kicks off. In this item i am going to highlight one area that i see a lot when coaching clients in the short game area of golf. This month we will be looking at topped or thinned chip shot, this shot will often happen just at the wrong time in your round of golf and will strike fear into other shot of this length or type for the rest of the round.
So the most common problem i see from clients hitting this type of shot is the arms moving in towards the body through the impact area and the right hand (for a right handed golfer) taking control of shot, this action then pushes the club head towards the target and this leads to striking the ball on or above the equator of the ball seeing it run across the green. The drill below will allow you to practice better technique and achieve a more control and consistent strike on these short game shorts. Building confidence in the area of your game is essential to playing good golf. Tie Drill - This is a low cost drill that will allow you to say goodbye to those confidence killing thin chip shots for good. As you can see from the images, you will need to set up to the chip shot as you normally would do. Then with the tie made longer you hold the tie under the left hand on the grip of the golf club. The tie needs to be pulled torte at the address position, from here you will need to complete the back swing and follow through with the tie keeping the tension. If you can complete this then your arms wont have pulled in towards your body allowing your hands to become active through impact. Over time and with practice this movement will become more natural and you will learn to trust this even under the greatest pressure. The easy way to apply false eyelashes Step 1: Apply mascara
Curl natural lashes and comb on a coat of mascara, creating a shelf to support the weight of your falsie.
Step 2: Cut to fit
Cut the lash band right down the centre to create a large individual lash. It’s easier to place than a full lash strip, which can become wonky and asymmetrical.
Step 3: Add adhesive
Trace each lash band, one by one, with a laser-thin line of the supplied glue and wait a few moments for it to dry for a few seconds making it more tacky.
Step 4: Put them on
Using your fingers, not tweezers, place your extension on the outer corner first, hugging that lash line tight. For an eye-lifting effect, place the outer extension slightly above the natural lashline.

The Lymphoedema Support Network (LSN) will also be joining the LSS Lymphoedema Awareness Day on the 11th March at Moreton Hall Community Centre, 1.30pm – 4.30pm. LSN joins Macmillan, Talk Lipoedema, The Chronic Pain Support Group and BSN at the event. So what is Lipoedema? The Suffolk GP Federation Lymphoedema Service also treats patients with Lipoedema. It’s a chronic and progressive disorder that can occur at any age and affects the adipose tissue, over 300 million women worldwide have this painful condition. Because of increased fat under the skin, legs can appear pale and feel cold when compared with the rest of the body. Skin feels fatty or doughy and is often tender and bruises easily. Feet and hands are not affected, although the arms

can be occasionally. Lipoedema can be very painful – women with the condition often complain of aching in the affected limbs and pain in the knees. Some features of Lipoedema are: • Weight is gained disproportionately on hips and thighs and below knee, this usually affects both sides and is symmetrical. • Legs are sensitive to touch with deep throbbing pain in legs and pain in knee joints • Legs feel heavy and swell throughout the day (especially after long periods of standing or sitting) but resolve overnight. • Fat on legs looks dimpled like “orange peel“ and legs may feel cold to the touch. Lipoedema fat does not respond to dieting If you think you may be suffering from Lipoedema then visit your GP to ask for a referral to the Suffolk GP Federation Lymphoedema Service. Run for Patients by Patients The Chronic Pain Support Group established 2009 in Bury St Edmunds, at that time the first self-help group in Suffolk. With continued support and the dedication of its members the group still continues to flourish. The Chronic Pain Support Group is made up of a variety of people who are experiencing pain for a number of reasons. We are a friendly, welcoming group and have a very relaxed attitude – it is all about feeling comfortable with others, being supportive and sharing time together. Many have said how our group has helped them to feel less isolated and more able to cope with their condition. We understand the difficulties of living in pain and the lack of support once formal treatment has finished. People gain a considerable amount from being able to meet others in similar circumstances. We are run by patients for patients and understand just how you feel. Members are supportive of each other and share experiences. If members cannot make a meeting we are happy to keep them informed via our quarterly newsletter. The group meets in a ‘safe’ environment on a monthly basis at the Southgate Community Centre in Bury St Edmunds on a Thursday from 2-4pm. Meetings include speakers, presentations and refreshments. Since we started we have welcomed a number of very interesting
professional speakers from a wide range of pain related disciplines. We are a self-financing community group and rely heavily on our own fundraising and community support. Carers and partners are welcome to come along to. Apart from our meetings we offer monthly coffee mornings and crafting group, website and on-line community. Coffee Chia smoothie Enjoying your coffee with vitamin E rich almond milk and omega 3 charged chia seeds makes this smoothie superb.
INGREDIENTS
150ml of almond milk 1 banana 1 shot of cold coffee 2 tbsp of chia seeds 1 tsp of vanilla extract or vanilla powder
Place everything except the seeds in the blender and blend. Poor into a glass then stir in the chia seeds virgously. Let this mix sit for 10 minutes stirring every few minutes. Add some ice and sip it back!

By Cat Dube Following the adverts that we have recently run for The Bear, Beyton, we thought we would get ourselves along to sample the food and see what we have been missing. So, on Friday night our editor, Gemma, myself and our friend Kim went along for a girlie meal. On arrival we were welcomed by Jackie who served us our drinks and we settled ourselves down by the warm open fire for a predinner glass of Prosecco. After a long week it was just what was needed and Prosecco is available by the glass and bottle! Jackie then showed us to our table in a separate area to the bar. For starters Gemma and I ordered baked Camembert to share and Kim ordered the mussels. The Camembert was baked to perfection – it was evenly creamy and runny and was served with toasted bread and delicious homemade chutneys. The mussels were also cooked extremely well. The sauce that the mussels were cooked in was
Beyton’s hidden treasure... creamy with added freshness from the addition of chives and pea shoots. ‘The best mussels I have ever eaten’ according to Kim. Next came the mains… I chose the ribeye steak, Gemma the fish and chips and Kim the duck. Again, all elements that made up the meals were cooked to perfection. The duck was tender and not over cooked, the chips were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, the onion rings were coated in the same light and crispy batter as the fish and the homemade tartar sauce was excellent. Everything was presented beautifully ensuring all of the senses were catered for. The portions were all generous without being too over bearing. To finish, we felt we had a corner somewhere to squeeze in some dessert – I chose the salted caramel cheesecake, Gemma had the chocolate fondant and Kim the crème brulee. I think the best way to describe the desserts is simply ‘perfect’ – once you have been along to try, I think you will
know what I mean and agree wholeheartedly! One of the best things about the menu is that many of the dishes are offered as a main meal as well as a starter/lighter meal size option and all the desserts can be ordered as a taster size so all appetites can be catered for. All credit to the chef, Rob, for cooking such amazing dishes. You can tell that real care and attention is put in to each and every meal and only the very best quality ingredients are sourced to ensure you get a fantastic food experience. The décor of the pub is clean, warm and welcoming and with such amazing food on offer, you will go away happy and contented. I am so pleased to have been introduced to this hidden gem and will be returning very soon. How did Anglia Coffee Solutions Ltd begin... Anglia Coffee Solutions was formed in 2013 by Managing Director, Trevor Collins who has almost 25 years experience in the vending and coffee industry. Most of their employees have been in the industry before, working for local providers.

Mediation also provides a certain degree of control for the parties over any outcome reached. In the Court room, the outcome of any dispute is ultimately decided by a Judge. Mediation can often assist in rebuilding relationships between the parties if they have broken down due to the dispute in question. The fact that both parties have voluntarily come to the mediation table indicates a certain amount of willingness to resolve matters, and in the majority of cases any settlement reached involves a certain degree of compromise on the part of the protagonists.
here has been a long held popular perception that litigation through lawyers can be a drawn out and costly process which can be stressful for all parties. Of course in some instances this has been true although the trend now is to try and streamline the litigation process both in the context of time and costs.
Mediation is becoming increasingly popular as a method of resolving disputes. This process involves a trained mediator, usually a lawyer, facilitating and negotiating between the parties with a view to reaching a settlement palatable to all, or at the very least narrowing the issues in dispute. There are many advantages to mediating a dispute. It is a flexible process that can be tailored to the nature of the dispute and to the parties. It can be allocated an hour, a day or longer if need be. The parties can sit together or in separate rooms. They may choose to be represented or unrepresented, although in most matters involving some degree of legal argument and principle, parties are represented by their solicitor or barrister.

coconut & raspberry muffins Treat mum on Mother’s Day...
Ingredients: 200g plain flour, sieved 2 teaspoons baking powder 150g caster sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 25g dessicated coconut, plus extra to sprinkle 100ml sunflower oil 1 egg 150ml coconut milk 150g raspberries, fresh or frozen icing sugar to dredge before serving
Method: Preheat the oven to 200 C / Gas 6. Line your muffin tin with paper cases or grease well. Combine your dry ingredients: flour, baking powder, sugar, salt and dessicated coconut in a mixing bowl. In a separate bowl or jug combine your wet ingredients: oil, egg and coconut milk. Make a well in the center of your dry ingredients and gradually combine together with your wet ingredients. When smooth fold in raspberries. Spoon into the prepared tin. Sprinkle with dessicated coconut. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes. Dredge with icing sugar before serving.

Following on from the fantastic amount of money raised for Cancer Research last May at the fundraising night Sam, Ben, Tanya and Guy organised, they are holding another night on 22nd April but this time we are raising money for St Nicholas Hospice in Bury.
All four of them have known somebody who has been cared for by the hospice staff, either there or at home, and Sam found their counselling a great help after losing her dad to cancer. Ear We Go

I
t started as a mild ear ache but within a few hours I was curled up on my bed clutching my ear to a hot water bottle, crying like a girl. Yes, I can confirm that a perforated ear drum is unquestionably more painful and traumatic than child birth…probably. The thing is about your 6 primary senses; you just take them for granted. There is no thought required to use them, they just do what they do and everything is great. Until something goes wrong – then your body certainly lets you know about it. I’ve suffered a few painful injuries in my time (I won’t bore you with the gruesome details here… maybe another month) but on the whole, with enough drugs, I have always been able to find some level of comfort. A position in which I was at least able to get a little relief from the pain and distress.

This was not the case with a damaged ear drum. However, it was not all bad, as the really intense pain eased considerably once the drum its self burst. The doctor confirmed the diagnosis. The crippling ear ache was the build up of internal pressure, prior to the burst, which saw the pressure released (and an alarming red discharge from the ear…eeek!). Two weeks on, aside from the 24/7 under water tinnitus, I remain basically deaf in one ear. Like most of us nowadays, I decided to visit the internet, rather than the actual doctors for a check up. Dr Google told me this may last several weeks or even months – oh dear. Reading on, it also told me of cases where hearing loss is permanent – pardon!? Of course then I went on to read cases of where an infection spread from the ear
into the brain and caused brain damage and paralysis – I knew this would end badly!?! Oh well, I’m sure it will all be fine. So long as I can still go running whilst this happens I’ll be happy enough. This experience has taught me a couple of things. Firstly, it seems I tend to sleep with my right ear on the pillow, as I can’t hear the baby monitor anymore (that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it). Secondly, I must show more sympathy next time one of the kids says they have an ear ache. And finally, my (unofficial and bad) advice should you ever have the misfortune of experiencing this harrowing event. Take the maximum dose of Ibuprofen stated on the box, keep away from everyone - especially children, and do not ride a bike home from work when you can’t focus and feel dizzy.

Limes Equestrian are a friendly but professional riding school, with many years of experience in teaching all levels of riding from beginners to advanced from 4 years old to adults. Groups, semi-private and private lessons are available with their qualified instructors. Ian and Claire invited me along to observe some of their half term Pony Club Day. I went with my 3 boys. The older 2 (6 & 8) were able to have a riding lesson while they were there. They have not ridden before so weren’t too sure what to expect. On arrival, they met some of the horses and Ian and Claire were very good at explaining to them about Health & Safety around the stables. Both the boys really enjoyed joining in some of the Pony Club games and having a lesson. The ponies that they rode were brilliant and even my 4 year old enjoyed sitting on and having a ride about. Thank you Claire and Ian for an enjoyable afternoon.

Limes Equestrian… Jacob says… Before I got on for the first time I was kind of nervous to ride a horse. Claire and Ian were very reassuring and helped me find a hat that fit me. Once I got on, I was very glad that I had come to ride here. I enjoyed my lesson and I learnt how to hold the reins correctly, how to steer the horse, trot and get on and off safely. I really liked coming to Limes Equestrian and would like to come back and have more lessons another day.

The Bury Folk Festival will be held again this year in July, in the stunning surroundings of Nowton Park, Bury St Edmunds. The organisers have promised bigger and better for this year’s event…more performers, larger stages, longer opening and a diverse array of other attractions suitable for all ages. Some of these attractions include an acoustic tent for musicians who would like to bring their own instruments to play informally, along with a variety of children’s activities. Liquid refreshment (including excellent real ale) will be supplied by the team from Oakes Barn and there will be several local food outlets. There will also be opportunity to buy gifts, souvenirs, CDs and merchandise from a collection of artisan stalls. As well as a host of top quality local and regional performers, many of the scheduled artists this year have reputations nationally. Some of these include… The Malingerers, Hannah Sanders, Sound Tradition, Two Coats Colder, Bof! and The Bounty Hounds. Steve Martin, who is spearheading this year’s Festival campaign said, “We are providing a music extravaganza this year with some truly talented performers”. Forsythia What to do in your garden in March
Forsythia has to be one of the easiest plants to grow simply plant and you need do little more. Very popular and many gardens will have one. Provides a dazzling splash of colour to brighten up the end of Winter and herald the beginnings of Spring. On the down side the flowering season is short from late Feb to early March.
Best planted in full sun though they will pretty much survive in any part of the garden. They will grow to around 10 feet tall by 6 feet wide so should you wish to restrict it then prune after flowering.

I am a member of Jetts Netball Club and I had the opportunity to go to Birmingham and watch 8 awesome netball teams play in one day. The plan for the day was to watch four matches, each consisting of 4 quarters that lasted fifteen minutes. It was an excellent day and I really enjoyed myself. In the third match I

missed one of the quarters to go and meet some of the players and I got one of the best players ever! She plays for England and gets 91% of her goals in, her name is Helen Housby and I got a selfie with her as well as her autograph. She played for the Manchester Thunder Team. The teams that played were: Hertfordshire Mavericks vs Celtic Dragons, Yorkshire Jets vs Loughborough Lightening, Manchester Thunder vs Team Northumbria and Surrey Storm vs Team bath. The team I was supporting was Hertfordshire Mavericks and they won their game easily! Big thank you to Tracy Butcher for taking me and my mum, we had an excellent time!

During Lent you can choose to give up something you really enjoy/doing/eating, for 40 days. For lent I have given up sweets, chocolate and crisps. This year it started on Wednesday 10th February and ends on Thursday 24th March. I have completed it so far but will be glad when it ends! It has been tricky because my brother went into Aunty Pams Sweet Shop and I had to go with him. I really wanted to get some sweets but I didn’t, so I manged that, but it is difficult. If you guys have given up anything then hats off to you but if you tried but didn’t quite make it then still well done to you, there is always next year!

We offer a ‘Happy hour’ for the under 16’s which runs from 4pm, Mon to Fri, in term time, or from 10am in the school holidays. Happy Spring Time Happy Spring Clean Spring is in the air. The snowdrops have sprung up from the depths, adorning our woodlands with their delicate white flowers, and the punchy yellows and oranges of the Spring daffs aren’t far behind. Local fields have Spring piglets snuffling about with their mums and little lambs fumbling about on their wonky legs. There is no doubt in my mind nor my sons mind, that Spring has indeed either arrived or is waiting eagerly in the wings for its imminent entrance. For the first time this year I have also hung my washing out on the line with complete drying success! Too long have I bundled my family’s washing in the tumble dryer resulting in slightly too short joggers now skimming the ankles of my 4 year old and school polo shirts resembling more of the current crop top fashion. Needless to say, I was thrilled to go out to my washing line and collect my first surprisingly dry, not damp, load of the season. You see, Spring time inspires me, it motivates me; house, home, family, mind and body. It’s a time to get ready and to clear out the junk I’ve stored up or left over from Winter. When the signs of Spring are evident, including my first load of dry washing off the line, I know it’s time to don the marigolds and go to work. March for me is Spring cleaning month. Spring cleaning in my world is a holistic activity and one I want to encourage you to engage with too. Finding time at the beginning of Spring to turf out the old, dust away the cobwebs and make space for the new, really is a worthwhile 68 | MARCH 2016
endeavour. I promise it won’t be as traumatic as it might sound! Here is my 5 point guide to a holistic ‘house, home, family, mind and body’ Spring clean 1. House - This is where the marigolds come in (I bought a new pair this week). On my calendar I like to set aside one or two ‘cleaning days’ where I crank up the music, play air guitar with the broom and bravely tackle the eight legged creature in the corner of my lounge with my trusty light sabre, otherwise known to most as a vacuum cleaner pipe! Step one and quite possibly THE most important element of any successful Spring clean. With a clean and freshly ordered house I always feel like I can take on the world! 2. Home - We all aim to make our house a home, a place of refuge, comfort and enjoyment after a tough day in the office. Part of my Spring clean always involves shuffling around the furniture, perhaps renovating an old bookshelf or treating myself to a new duvet set

or towels for the bathroom. Whatever makes your house a home, take some time during your Spring clean to refresh it. 3. Family - Spring cleaning for me is about shaking things up. Over Winter we traditionally ‘set in’ and in our family this year we have snuggled by the fire, drank copious cups of hot chocolate and played endless rounds of our new favourite game, Dobble. But Spring is here and it’s time to ‘carpe diem’. Join us. We’ll be hopping on our bikes, stomping round the woods and snapping some pics with cute baby lambs at any and every opportunity we get. 4. Mind - In just the same way as our rooms gather cobwebs, our minds do too and we don’t often realise the mindsets we fall into. “I can’t do that” “I’m not good enough” “I look terrible” “There’s no point, it’ll never change.” I believe it’s really important to Spring clean our minds; take time to take the negative thoughts captive, chuck them out of the doorway of our
minds and take a moment to readjust our thoughts to a more positive perspective. By taking time to do this regularly I know I am a better mum, wife and friend to those around me. Try it. Have some ‘me’ time to declutter your thinking. 5. Body - The sun has got his hat on (almost) and they always say “there’s no better time to get moving”. In our house we’ve set ourselves some Spring time challenges, my husband is doing a ‘TOUGHEST’ challenge (I think he’s gone completely mad!) and I’ve given myself the goal of being able to run 10k by May. Maybe I’m mad too? I challenge you to join me in Spring cleaning your life holistically; house, home, family, mind and body. Together we can feel more able, prepared and filled with anticipation for the joys of Spring time. It’s a great time of year, Happy Spring Time, Happy Spring Clean!

Furnishing your home with the personal touch… I have been looking to update some of the bedrooms in my house. My 3 boys have asked to have their bedrooms updated for their birthdays this year. Having looked through all the usual high street offerings, I came away feeling slightly ‘flat’ and uninspired. What I wanted didn’t really seem to be available. I was after something tasteful that could see them through into their teens and would complement all their little fads and phases along the way, avoiding black and green ‘Minecraft’ curtains or ‘Monster Jam’ bedding! A friend recommended I speak to Vanessa at Lescale Furnishings as she had gone to her, initially, to get her nursery bedding and ended up using her to update the curtains in her living room and dining room which I had always admired. I contacted Vanessa and she came out to my home to talk me through what I was looking for and showed me some of the sample books that she had. There were lots of fabrics and ideas that I liked and it didn’t faze Vanessa at all that I wanted to add bits here and there to come up with a bespoke design. I have now decided on Roman Blinds, bedspreads, cushions and even bedside table lamps all of which coordinate each other without being too ‘matchy’! The service you get is personal – she will even use up the scraps of material to make outfits for favourite teddies or scatter cushions for beds! It is these extra touches that really set her apart from most! With so many different products, which are all hand made by her, you can coordinate an entire room! Working out of her studio, next to her home in Thurston, she is local and on hand if you need to make any adjustments. As everything is handmade to your exact specification, you will not be able to take your items away the next day, but you will get beautiful, hand-made, quality furnishings that will last and are certainly worth waiting for!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED – Independent Custody Visitors
Ensuring that people in police custody are treated properly is a statutory duty of Tim Passmore, the Police and Crime Commissioner and he relies on an army of volunteers to help him monitor the welfare of people who are detained in police stations in Suffolk. Tim Passmore is looking for additional volunteer custody visitors to make regular unannounced visits to Police Investigation Centres. The volunteers will be required to look, listen and report on their findings to the PCC to ensure that the police are providing the service that is expected of them. Tim Passmore said, “Suffolk has two Police Investigation Centres in Suffolk – one in Bury St Edmunds and one at Martlesham, Ipswich – and we are looking to recruit two people to each of those visiting panels. I need the overall panel of visitors to be representative of the local community, so I would really encourage interest from younger people and black and minority ethnic residents. We have a great team of custody visitors in Suffolk, who give their time to support this valuable service and I thank them for their commitment which does not always receive the recognition it deserves.” Volunteers are required to attend an initial training session of half a day and then receive training by observing existing visitors until confident in performing the role. Visitors carry out approximately one visit per month (as part of a panel carrying out the weekly visits), there are quarterly panel meetings which are held in the evening and then 1-2 training days/conference per year. The role is voluntary but we do pay expenses for travel costs. Applicants must be over 18 years of age and appointments are subject to police vetting checks and references. I
n the Christian calendar we now are in the middle of Lent, a season of preparation. In recent times it has been marked by many imaginative projects including doing a good turn every day or giving a small donations to different charities. Almost everybody knows the reason Christians do this is because of Easter. However, Easter is so crowded with bunnies and eggs that people lose sight of what Easter is and, more importantly, the Easter hope. Part of the Easter hope is that the disciples were totally devastated by the horrible death of Jesus upon the cross. They had no expectation that they would ever see him again
and he was the most wonderful person they had ever met. Whenever we face bereavement of a loved one we experience the same devastation. Somebody who has been at the centre of our lives, like a partner, or someone who has been a mentor, guide and provider, like a parent or grandparent, or someone who has been our hope and joy, like a child, is snatched from us and life will never, ever be the same again. In fact, life itself seems pointless. So when Jesus arose from the dead, hope and joy were restored; relationships began again in a new and better way. So part of the Christian hope is that death is not the end, bereavement is not
MORETON HALL permanent and in heaven we will meet our loved ones again. There is hope and there can still be joy and love. The second part of the Christian hope is that the Jesus who came back from the grave had a new resurrection body. You could touch it, you could see it, you could hold him and you could even watch him eat. This means that when we die, particularly in our old age, our infirmities will die with us. At our resurrection we will have a new body, a new life, free from pain and, perhaps more wonderfully yet, a mind and a heart that can perceive and understand all the wonders of heaven and the universe. The Christian hope of Easter is therefore exciting and it offers more than just a bright future or merely a continuation of the same forever and ever. The final part of the Easter hope is that one day heaven and earth will be reunited. There will be a new universe and everybody who lives on earth in their resurrection

bodies will actually walk with Jesus, God the Father and God the Holy Spirit in the new perfect garden that the world will become. This new world will be free from the environmental concerns, poisons and disasters that we battle against at the moment. It will also be free of the tyranny and oppression, injustice and hardship that so many have to endure. For God himself will be there guiding and sharing our new lives every step of the way, surrounding us with his love. This is what Christians look forward to. This is what Christians are preparing for. Not just in Lent, but all through their lives. The moreton hall community centre Hello from a rather cold Moreton Hall office as we look out over the frosty lawn. However it reminds us that spring and summer follow shortly and we look forward to warmer months ahead. What’s new from the Moreton Hall Association, the body in charge of the Moreton Hall Community Centre? For those of you who may not have seen, we have gone green! We have had solar panels installed on the roof helping to improve our carbon footprint. This will reduce our energy costs and help fund the ongoing costs of maintaining the building. And it is going to be a larger building we hope very soon. We have secured funding to improve the community facilities and as a result we will hopefully house a larger post office which will become a main post office and excitingly we have been approached to provide a library service as well. Also plans for an additional room for hire and refurbishment of some of the existing fixtures. Car parking is an issue but we also have been in recent talks about that too. So as you can see a busy period ahead to improve and develop a key facility of a growing estate.
The Moreton Hall Community Club has a busy year ahead too. There are a host of events and evenings planned for members of the club but it is worthy of a note to say that you are all welcome at any time. So what do we have ahead? Many Saturday nights of live music, discos, quiz nights and other events with two events coming up in March, see the advert on the other page. Easter Monday Children’s day. Easter egg hunt, chocolate bingo and Trevor the Animal Handler back by popular demand with some new animals this year. Booking a must for this, again see the advert on the other page. The Queen’s 90th birthday celebration on Sunday 12th June. We are working closely with both primary schools for this event. This will be an allday event with stalls, games and competitions. Watch out for more details. Summer Jazz on the patio returns again following the Moreton Hall Open Gardens on Sunday 26th June. The Euros. The best place to watch England’s talented youngsters take on the rest of Europe this summer.

A key day in the year for both organisations so fingers crossed for no rain this year. Expect all the normal attractions plus we have been promised some new ones too. We hope that our members and their guests will appreciate this gesture.
