EDITOR’S LETTER
November WELCOME TO THE
ISSUE
Hello and welcome to the November issue of the Moreton Hall Directory. Well, it’s nearly Christmas, and the panic will soon set in over what to get everyone, and what to wear at the office party. Ladies, fear not, on page 52 we have a selection of gorgeous party dresses to make you look fab! On page 58 we have a few gift selections for our best buys this month too. Going to a firework display this month? Details are on page 70 for the Abbey Gardens and Rugby Club displays. If you are having a fireworks party at home and want something warm to serve your guests, look at our yummy soup recipe on page 30. Remember to get all the pets inside on the night though, and be safe around the bonfire. If you want to tread out into the cold one evening, we have lots of events advertised throughout this issue, you will be spoilt for choice. Next month I will hopefully be saying that Christmas is all wrapped up and ready to go! Well I say that every year, but you can usually find me out shopping on Christmas Eve! Have a lovely November.

news MORETON HALL
Brought to you by Councillor Frank Warby Contact Frank on 07818 455472 or email frankjwarby@aol.com
Moreton Hall We are going to be asked whether we wish to parish Moreton Hall and also boundaries. There is a move to Parish our estate, personally I can see that this will make no difference to the estate except it will cost more in precept and another layer of council. There will be a need for a parish clerk and a finance officer costing approximately £25,000. Your present precept to the town council is £13 this could go to about £50 per year. What would you get for this? not a lot, more red tape. Think about it the town council serves us well for the £13 a year we pay into it. Having spoken with other representatives, they express the same feeling and wish things to be left as they are.
boundaries
There is going to be some changes to our boundary, at present some of the houses on our estate fall within Rougham parish. Having spoken to a lot of people on the estate the general feeling is that the following would be the preferred boundaries for Moreton Hall. Using the A14 as the east boundary and the Railway line as the western boundary then the Flying Fortress and Rougham Airfield as the northern boundary. This is only an idea, the new 500 houses, the new school and the football and sports area at present fall within Rougham parish. What are your feelings?
CYCLISTS
I have had a call from a very concerned lady living on Darcy Close regarding school children racing off the cycle path straight on to the road on Darcy close. I will speak to the Council and see if it’s possible to get a barrier put there for safety reasons, speeding cyclist along Symonds Road is another concern, adults and school children race down like Bats out of hell and there is going to be an accident. Please parents ask your children to take care when cycling to school, adults you should know better, remember the pathways are multi-purpose. APOLOGY: the picture for the funday we used in last months edition of the directory wasn’t the Moreton hall clubs fun day, but in fact the LITTLE SQUIGGLERS fund raiser for Henrys Holiday Help and they raised £644.50.

TRAVELLERS
As most of you will have read in the papers or heard we have had travellers back in town camped on Ram Meadow fearing that they might attempt to move up on our estate. A skip has been placed behind the gate on Layhill Field to prevent entry and a fence has been erected along the football field on Heldhaw Road. Prevention is better than cure, it cost us taxpayers to do this but it also cost to clear up after he travellers leave. Hopefully we have made the estate safer.
ROADS I have been on to Suffolk County Council regarding the state of some roads on Moreton hall, there are some very bad areas that need resurfacing. Raedwald drive in particular, which has been made worse by the heavy duty vehicles during the building of the new classrooms. We have heard from Suffolk Highways that it is in the programme for the financial year 2016/17 which means it will not get done until 2018. I can’t wait to see the state of the road by then. We will have another 100 pupils attending Sebert wood school within the next few months which will mean more cars.
drink and drugs
I have had worrying call from a few people concerned about the amount of drinking that is going on at weekends on Ten Acre field. Each Saturday and Sunday morning some of us dog walkers end up picking up beer cans wine and vodka bottles and the latest are these gas bombs, which the youngsters use to fill balloons then inhale the gas. Very dangerous and I think parents ought to be aware that this is going in.
Thats all for now, take care until next time, Frank Warby NOVEMBER 2015 | 09

ABBOTS GREEN Community Primary School It has been another busy month for Abbots Green!
We recently celebrated our 10th Anniversary. To mark this very special occasion in our school’s history a whole day of outdoor activities were planned for the children including rock-climbing; orienteering; baking bread over a fire pit; flag painting; archery; geo-caching and denbuilding. We also officially opened our updated Key Stage 2 Building in the presence of parents and governors at the school and cut our delicious 10th birthday cake! As a memento of this amazing day every child and adult in the school also received a commemorative t-shirt and a cupcake to take home. And this week we have held our “Street Feast Extravaganza” during which time the children have benefited from a vast range of visitors into school as well as taking part in visits out. All these opportunities have been linked to our current whole school project – Street

We have welcomed professional chefs into school, as well as the US Military; Karen Cannard from the Rubbish Diet; Hodmedods; and the Director of Hospitality at West Suffolk College to name just a few. All our visitors have provided valuable information to the children to support their learning in school and there has also been some very enjoyable food tasting too! Children across the school have enjoyed visits out to Tesco; the Bury St Edmunds Food Bank and Infusions4Chefs and we have even held our very own ‘Dragon’s Den’ with our Year 5 children pitching their ideas for smoothie drinks as part of an enterprise activity. The week culminates in a Food Market at the end of the school day tomorrow for which every class has prepared a tasty treat to sell to their parents and families – it really has been a wonderful half term!

Dear reader,
West Suffolk Hospital needs you! West Suffolk Hospital is appealing for more people to step forward and join its growing army of volunteers so that it can introduce new roles and further expand the services provided for the benefit of patients. The hospital currently has 370 volunteers on its books, who together dedicate around 41,000 hours each year to supporting patients, visitors and staff. It is now hoping to increase that number so it can roll out the new role of bleep volunteer, who will run errands such as collecting medication or getting newspapers for patients, so that staff can remain on the wards. The hospital is also looking for volunteers to spend time with patients who have dementia, using reminiscence materials and playing traditional games, as well people to help at mealtimes and run the Friends shop and trolley service seven days a week. The call comes ahead of World Make a Difference Day, which takes place on Saturday (24 October). Linda Murrell, voluntary services manager, said: “Our wonderful team of volunteers do an absolutely fantastic job, and make a real difference to the experience of our patients, visitors and staff. “We’re now hoping to expand the services we can provide across the hospital and its community, but to do that we need to recruit more people to our team. We are talking to our schools too and hope more young people will come to the hospital to complete their national citizenship service, and will also encourage those doing community volunteering schemes like the Duke of Edinburgh Award to consider volunteering at West Suffolk. “We are keen to hear from people of all
ages and backgrounds who have some time to spare and would like to make a difference in their local community. A huge range of different roles are available, and we really can find something to suit everyone, so please do get in touch if you’d like to find out more.” The hospital’s volunteers fulfil a variety of roles, including helping on the wards at mealtimes, spending time with patients who have dementia and welcoming patients and visitors at clinics and reception desks. They help in departments across the hospital, support the chaplaincy team and also raise funds through the Friends’ shop and trolley service. Keith Hayes, of Bury St Edmunds, has been volunteering at the hospital since 2011 in various areas, most recently in the eye treatment centre and in the fracture clinic. He said: “I really enjoy helping people and, since I have had two hip replacements, really wanted to give something back for all the excellent care I received, so the fracture clinic is an ideal place for me.” Keith is also going to be a bleep volunteer and will be joining a new team of volunteers who will run ad hoc errands for staff and patients. “I do like to be active and this will certainly keep me fit,” he said. “I would recommend volunteering at the West Suffolk to anyone who has some time to spare - it is really worthwhile and enjoyable!”
For more information about volunteering opportunities at the hospital, contact the voluntary services team on 01284 713169 or visit www.wsh.nhs.uk. 12 | NOVEMBER 2015

Coppicing the dogwood
N
ovember can be cold, grey, foggy and damp, but, in the woods, it can also be beautiful.
Trees prepare for Winter by withdrawing nitrogen and phosphorous from their leaves to store in their roots ready for Spring. As the green colour fades, the carotinoids and flavonoids that are already there show up as yellow and orange. However, some trees produce another compound called anthocyanin, which produces the purples and reds which look so attractive at this time of year. One of the trees which does this to spectacular effect is the cornus, or dogwood, and this month we shall be coppicing these around Woodland Ways Pond. Coppicing is an ancient form of woodland management, wherein trees are cut back to near ground level to allow them to make new growth from the roots or stump. This revitalises the tree and makes for strong, healthy growth.
In fact, the straight, smooth bracts of the dogwood used to be harvested to make skewers, or dags, so originally the tree would have been called the dagwood. Dogwoods are easily recognisable for their brightly coloured stems, lime green where they are in the shade and crimson red when exposed to the sunlight. Gardeners favour them for their winter foliage, but they also have a tiny white flower, followed by shiny black berries, called dogberries. Lots of birds and small mammals will be drawn to the tree for winter fodder. One of the theories for trees and bushes turning red is that it may attract more birds, another is that it may make the leaves less palatable to aphids and other pests which might attack and damage the tree. Anthocyanin is also the chemical compound that makes red wine red, something else to enjoy on the chilly autumn days!
Join us at Woodland Ways... Why not join in with a Woodland Ways work party to help improve the Moreton Hall woods? No experience is needed and all are welcome; we’ll show you what to do. Welcome to the 19th hole, a place for golf tips, reviews and everything golf related.
Welcome back, this month I had planned to bring a course review from The Grove Resort after my visit for a PGA competition. However on the morning we arrived at the beautiful resort the weather was against us and play was abandoned without us hitting a ball. Below is a picture of the practice putting green at The Grove, this will show the sort of weather that forced the competition to be abandoned. So with no golf happening at The Grove we decided we needed a golf fix of some description so we headed to Top Golf near Watford.
Top Golf is a high-tech golf driving range which provides a combination of practising golf and playing a game for points at the same time. The driving range works by each golf ball you hit being recorded by the target areas on the range, each section gives you different points value and these points are used to compete again the other people you are with and everyone else who will play at that venue on that day. After getting our golf fix with a couple of games it was time for some lunch. Top Golf offer both a sit down restaurant or table service to the golf range bay where you are playing. These venues are great for all the family from your avid golfer to someone that has never picked up a club before, and this site also offers a crazy golf course and an American Golf superstore. So if you’re around that area or ever looking for a golf day or evening out with a difference then Top Golf would be a great option.
Coaches Corner So as we move from the warmer weather into the winter the distances we can hit the golf ball will reduce. This is mainly due to the weather but also you can also be restricted by extra clothing, waterproofs etc. So with this in mind, do you know how far you hit each club? When you watch golf on the television you will see player and caddie in deep conversation about very detailed yardages. Now I am not saying they us non world class players should go into that much detail, however every player would benefit from knowing their yardages. Whether it was for peace of mind knowing you can make a certain carry over trouble or making better decisions when having to change clubs for certain weather conditions or graduates. How we can take the guess work out of this decision making, with my state of the art launch monitor I can run you through a simple and quick process to measure how far you hit each club in your golf bag. This process is available by prior arrangement with myself, so if you want to know your yardages and improve you’re scoring on course then please use the contact details below to book your yardage measuring session. The weather is turning and the golf season is coming to an end, have you had a good season? Or one you want to improve on next year? Or are you thinking of taking up this wonderful game? Whatever the answer to the questions above, why not book in for a lesson and let me give you the guidance to help reach your potential. Quote MHD for £5 off your first golf lesson with myself.

Meet our new Columnist....
Nicola Delglyn Osteomyologist Physical & Nutritional Therapy Hello again! I hope you found my last article interesting and you are looking forward to reading what this issue has for you? This month you’ve got a 2-for-1! As a mum of 2 sporty girls and an Osteomyologist looking after patient health and wellbeing, they are both of real interest to me, however you may find the content upsetting. Both articles have not been written to frighten you, rather, to educate and inspire you to want to learn more about subjects that are very relevant for anyone who has sons, daughters, nieces, nephews, Grand children. As a lecturer of mine used to say “knowledge is power, information is liberating and education is the premise of progress in every society and in every family”. This first article has taken me a while to write and i’m not ashamed to say that I’ve found it emotionally difficult at times whilst compiling my notes. Remembering my own experiences of loosing a close friend when I was 19 isn’t pleasant, especially when they were fit and healthy. Doug died in his sleep, which didn’t make it any easier, but (as the cliché goes) at least he wasn’t in any pain and it was quick. Why? We were just told his heart had stopped, whilst he slept. Heartbreaking as it was then, it still is hurts today when I hear of otherwise healthy young men and women who just collapse just like Doug. Earlier this year, I was listening to an interviewee on Radio 5-live recalling a young team-mate suddenly collapsing from a suspected heart condition whilst playing rugby

Treatments to beat pain for and hearing about an organisation called CRY who were set up to help the bereaved and provide screening for (initially) tennis players. I was moved enough to contact them to ask if I could promote their work either through articles that I write or by promoting their work to sports clubs and schools in and around Bury St Edmunds. I was delighted when they agreed. So here we go! Very briefly, CRY has grown from strength to strength over the past two decades and is now an influential body that now advises on national policy and is recognised as leading the way in the prevention of young sudden cardiac death, both in the UK and internationally. They work closely with elite athletes, training academies and professional sports players and also active children throughout the country. It is so important to remember that sport itself does not cause young sudden death – although it can exacerbate an underlying, undiagnosed heart condition by up to 3 times. Dr. Steve Cox, CRY’s Director of Screening and Research explains: “Sport and staying active is good for you – there can be no doubt about that! We encourage all young people to develop a fit and active lifestyle to maintain good health both now and in the future. The research into staying active is well established and all of the cardiologists and researchers who work with CRY would advocate the benefits of leading a fit and non-sedentary life in terms of looking after your heart health. We do not want to cause alarm and in fact we want to reassure young

Physical & Nutritional Therapy adults, children & athletes people and their families that a simple ECG test – routinely carried out across the UK by CRY’s screening team – can identify the vast majority of conditions that might cause potential problems in young people aged 14-35. Once diagnosed, young people can be treated and will be given lifestyle advice, sometimes it will be possible for them to have corrective surgery. Our message is simple: Be active, stay active but also make sure you’re aware of your heart health and any personal factors that might place you at risk. Then, find ‘your sport’ – whether football or ballet – and exercise safely!” Indeed, CRY now tests over 17,000 young people every year (aged 14-35), through its pioneering screening programme that is overseen by world leading cardiologist, Professor Sanjay Sharma. My eldest daughter was one of them. We attended a FREE clinic in Cambridge and within 40 minutes we were given her results, which gave us peace of mind that she was safe to exercise at a high level in the future. To find out more about CRY please visit their website www.c-r-y.org.uk or contact me at www.delglynclinic.com for further details. As heart health is so important for everyone and my girls, I was carrying out some research into energy drinks, not that we drink them, however, temptation away from the home is abundant. It’s interesting that research has shown that the side effects of energy drinks range from the “jitters” to increases in sweating! In April, a study by Spanish researchers warned consuming just one
energy drink a day could trigger erratic heartbeats and heart attacks in healthy teenagers. And this danger is even greater in people with underlying heart conditions. Doesn’t sound that good does it? From students needing to “burn the midnight oil” to gym goers needing a boost during a workout, energy drinks seem to be a must have, a fashion accessory. Unfortunately, water (which constitutes for about 65% of our body is given a miss!) Keeping well hydrated, eating nuts and whole grains, cutting out sugar and alcohol will all help boost your energy levels naturally! Whilst we might need a boost of carbohydrate from time to time, especially if you are exercising for over 90 minutes, using an energy drinks as a source of energy should be really be discouraged. These dangers aren’t just for the teenagers. I’ve been working in gyms for years and I’ve noticed a growing number of older clients using these drinks as an energy boost or a source of hydration, this worries me. Not least as an Instructor but as an Osteomyologist. These dangers are even greater for people who have underlying heart problems, and most of the time we are unaware we have one! To find out more, either head to my website www.delglynclinic.com or www. drinkaware.co.uk for some interesting reading.
Until next time stay safe and healthy!

HEALTH & BEAUTY
Hello - I’m Gwen Williams, I developed Secondary Lymphoedema in my left arm after surviving Breast Cancer in 2010. I’m now a patient under the NHS Lymphoedema Service and took the lead in setting up Lymphoedema Support Suffolk (LSS) to help other people with Lymphoedema, in fact I’m now the Secretary! Lymphoedema Support Suffolk is the local Support Group for Lymphoedema patients coming under the care of the Suffolk GP Federation Lymphoedema Service in West Suffolk. LSS meets between 7 – 9pm every other month at Moreton Hall Community Centre. There’s no joining fee, it’s a really friendly, informal and relaxed evening along with having cuppa and cake. LSS helps patients, and their partners, to feel less isolated and more able to cope with having Lymphoedema. It’s a positive experience to chat, be reassured and learn more about dealing with the condition. Concerns are shared and it really does help when someone says “oh yes, that happens to me as well”. LSS’s other aims are to raise awareness of Lymphoedema and fundraising for medical equipment for use in clinic. 28 | NOVEMBER 2015
So what is Lymphoedema? Lymphoedema is a defect in the lymphatic system. It can affect any part of the body, though most commonly seen as swollen limbs, as a consequence of an accumulation of fluid. It causes swelling, heaviness and pain which restricts mobility and quality of life. Lymphoedema can be primary (congential) or secondary for example, to cancer, cancer treatments or leg ulcers, although these are not the only causes. An estimated 240,000 people, of all genders, in the UK have Lymphoedema, many of whom remain undiagnosed and untreated. Treatment is available to help control and maintain Lymphoedema but sadly there is no cure. Further details about LSS and the Lymphoedema Service: Suffolk GP Federation CIC: 0845 2413313 (choose option 3) www.suffolkfed.org.uk click on Clinical Service tab British Lymphology Society website www.thebls.com

RECIPE
Spiced parsnip soup with coriander and chilli pesto Ingredients: 1 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, finely chopped 1 celery stick, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 1 tbsp ground coriander 2 tsp ground cumin 1kg (2lb) parsnips, chopped 1.5ltr (2 1/2pt) hot chicken stock 3 tbsp soured cream For the pesto 1 red chilli or dried chipotle chilli 50g (2oz) fresh coriander, leaves picked 15g (1/2oz) Parmesan, grated 4 tbsp pumpkin seeds, lightly toasted 4 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
Method: Heat the olive oil in a large pan over a medium heat. Add the onion, celery and a little seasoning, and cook for 3-5 minutes, or until softened. Add the garlic and ground spices and cook for 2-3 minutes more. Add the parsnips and stock, bring to the boil, and then simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the parsnips are tender. Meanwhile, make the pesto. Soak the chipotle chilli (if using) in a little just-boiled water for 15 minutes, or until softened, drain and then roughly chop. Put the chilli (or dried chipotle chilli) in a small blender with the coriander leaves, Parmesan and 2 tbsp of the pumpkin seeds and pulse a few times to combine. Add the extra-virgin olive oil, season, and whizz until coarsely mixed. Add a little more oil, if necessary, until the desired consistency is reached. Remove the soup from the heat and whizz with a stick blender until smooth (if it’s too thick, add a little more stock). Stir in the soured cream. Divide the soup between 6 bowls and add a drizzle of the pesto. Serve with the remaining pumpkin seeds with the warm Chilli cheese scones. 32 | NOVEMBER 2015

Best Foot Forward BY ANDREW SOUTHWOOD
S
ome things have developed at immeasurable pace over the years. Man has sent space craft to far flung corners of our solar system and we all have powerful computers in the palms of our hands. Yet, other things remain static. Ipswich linger in the second tier of the football league and buying school shoes for your children is an utter nightmare. In all likelihood your parents will have taken you to the local shoe shop in September, in the same way you have taken your kids, and no doubt they will take theirs in years to come. It’s a ritual that I’m sure neither parent nor child enjoys. As a father of children ‘blessed’ with dainty feet, it’s a huge head ache, no – a migraine, trying to get school shoes. Following the obligatory scrum and 20 min wait next to some brats from

hell, typically it goes like this. Helpful 17yr old salesperson: “oh, she’s a very narrow fitting isn’t she?”. Me: “Yes. I know…”. Then the huge selection of school shoes beautifully displayed around us, drops from a choice of about 50 to 5. Of those 5 at least 3 will have absurd sparkles/glitter/cartoon characters on them, and the remaining 2 will be open shoes with no wet weather protection at all. Suited more to a ballet dancer on stage than a 5 year old in a muddy play ground. It’s at this point I must deviate slightly and express my complete dismay at the designers of girls school shoes. Why they think they should be open topped and gloss finished I do not know. They clearly have never picked up their daughter from school after just one day in her ‘new’ shoes. Well, “why not just put her in the more robust boys shoes?” I hear you say. Believe me,
we’ve tried. Sadly the boys shoes (as well as being housed in the ‘boys’ section, causing some confusion to daughter and salesperson alike), do not go narrow enough. Why this is, is yet another mystery of the school shoe industry. So there we have it. Ill fitting, inner soled, open topped shoes costing more than the last pair of shoes I bought for myself, and lasting a tenth of the time. I’m not sure what the answer is, but there has got to be a better way of looking after our children’s precious feet? I’m all for wellie boots with a couple of pairs of thick socks, but apparently that would be frowned upon. On the positive side, I’ve made some new friends. As with 3 children (all with annoyingly narrow/small feet), I am now on first name terms with most of the employees of the towns major shoe shops. Sadly our paths will probably cross again before too long.

Hi guys!
How’s it going? Hope you’ve started your Christmas shopping? Not long now!
molly xx
EOS lip balms
EOS’ have been another one of those crazes recently. They are lip balms that can be bought from TopShop. They come in all different scents and colours. My favourites are ‘Sweet Mint’, ‘Strawberry Sorbet’ and ‘Honeysuckle Honeydew’. They are packaged the size and shape of a small egg but with a flat bottom so that it can stand. You twist the top off to reveal half a sphere shaped lip balm. I can see mine lasting for ages so you might want to add one to your Christmas list!
Advent Calendars Since I’ve already mentioned the ‘C’ word (I’m getting really excited already!) I wanted to remind you to get your advent calendars ready or bought. There are so many types to choose from. Do you like the picture ones, chocolate ones or are you lucky enough to have little advent boxes with Lego or other little treats inside? I like chocolate ones but I always make sure that I choose for the chocolate not the picture on the front. Luckily Cadburys always have a nice Christmassy picture as well as fantastic chocolate! If you are really picky on what calendar you have, make sure you get one sorted ASAP before they run out!
Indoor Fun
A couple of weekends ago, my family and I went to Milton Keynes to go indoor skydiving at Airkix in the Xscape building near the shopping centres. We had to arrive an hour before the time slot we had booked for, which gave us the chance to watch other people have a go before us. I felt really nervous since one guy moved his arms too quickly and bashed into the window. He was absolutely fine as he had protective gear on, but I didn’t want that to happen to me. We watched a briefing video which basically told us what would happen and what different hand signals meant so that we could adjust our bodies to help us fly smoothly. We went to kit up with suits, ear plugs and helmets. My helmet had Goofy sitting on top! Then it was time to fly!!!! The experience was really great! I was able to hover on my tummy like I was free falling and I also chose to do a ‘High Fly’ where the instructor whizzed me up about 15 metres and back down again. I would really recommend it to anyone who wants to have a go at doing something a bit different but that doesn’t involve having to jump out of a plane!

garden confidential BY PAUL CLARKE
PAULS PLANT OF THE MONTH
Michaelmas daisies What to do in your garden in November
Michaelmas Daises can provide vivid colour on drab autumn days and also make marvellous, longlived cut flowers right through until the first frosts. They are members of the Aster family and look good in the garden very late in the year. All the colours of the rainbow are available. Grow either from a seed, or buy from a garden centre.
Asters thrive in fairly damp soil with plenty of organic matter added on planting, and added as a thick mulch in spring. Plant them in full sun. They are all shallow rooted and can easily be moved even when they are in full flower. This can be a useful technique for filling gaps in the border.

If you believe the long range weather forecasts we are in for a long cold winter. The newspapers predict this every year and maybe this is the year they will get it right. Folk lore would suggest you look at the signs in nature to predict the forthcoming weather such as - the abundance of acorns , robins marking and taking up territory in the garden, evidence of squirrels working hard to hide away nuts. Sayings include “ A warm November is a sign of a bad winter to come” and “When berries are many in October beware a hard winter” . Whatever the weather we are in for there is more reason for getting on top of your garden now so here are some jobs you can be doing this month
HOME + LIFESTYLE
pauls jobs for the month General Maintenance • I usually find that by 2nd week of November that you can put away your lawn mower until Spring as plants and grass enter a state of dormancy when temperatures fall below 6c (43f). • Clear fallen leaves from your garden lawn and pathways. Leaves left on a lawn for a few weeks will starve the grass of light and will lead to bare patches. Use the leaves to make a leafmould. • Now is the time to do a garden check. By this I mean be prepared for any potential problems that might be caused by the weather by:checking your fence posts to ensure they are not at the point of rotting off, sheds and gates have proper locks and latches , plant stakes
are firmly in the ground are still supporting plants and outdoor taps are properly lagged. • Remove unwanted ivy from trees. Left unchecked it can soon smother a tree.
Vegetable and Fruit Garden • For an early crop of broad beans next May plant seeds this month. • Stop winter moth damage to fruit trees using grease bands around the trunks
Flower Garden
been considering moving a plant now is the time to do this. • Tidy up your perennials. Dead stems can be cut away, any leaves removed give the bare areas a fork over and then spread a mulch of compost or manure. • Now is the time to dig up your dahlia bulbs. gently remove dirt from the tubers cut back all of the growth and then store over winter in a dry, frost free place in compost.
• Plant out roses making sure you fill the hole with a mixture of bone meal and peat • Now is the time to plant bare root plants. Or if you have
This months poem... “How silently they tumble down. And come to rest upon the ground. To lay a carpet, rich and rare, Beneath the trees without a care, Content to sleep, their work well done, Colors gleaming in the sun. At other times, they wildly fly. Until they nearly reach the sky. Twisting, turning through the air. Till all the trees stand stark and bare. Exhausted, drop to earth below. To wait, like children, for the snow.” - Elsie N. Brady, Leaves

Hospice hopes ‘Chris
A charity hopes people will flock to witness a sea of gre The green-coloured ducks in question will not be of the usual species seen in the Abbey Gardens stretch of river, but will be of the plastic variety normally seen bobbing about in bathtubs. Green Duck’s Christmas Quackers duck race, in aid of St Nicholas Hospice Care, will give entrants the chance to win Christmas. Taking place at 3pm on Sunday 29 November, the owner of the first duck past the finishing post will win a hamper including a turkey, gravy, potatoes, Brussels sprouts, cranberry
sauce, Christmas pudding and a Christmas tree with lights and decorations. The second and third-placed ducks will win £50 and £25 Christmas vouchers. Jordan Hughes, St Nicholas Hospice Care Community Fundraiser, said: “This year we wanted to encourage as many as possible to get involved and support the Hospice. We hope Christmas Quackers gives people the opportunity to do so. “A sea of green ducks in the river will be quite a spectacle, so I encourage people to join us to watch the race on 29 November.”

Remembrance Sunday
is a day “to commemorate the contribution of British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women in the two World Wars and later conflicts”. It is held on the second Sunday in November, the Sunday nearest to 11 November (Sunday 8th November this year), Armistice Day, the anniversary of the end of hostilities in the First World War at 11 a.m. in 1918. Across The United Kingdom, Remembrance Sunday is marked by ceremonies at local war memorials in most cities, towns and villages, attended by civic dignitaries, ex-servicemen and women (many are members of the Royal British Legion and other veterans’ organisations), members of local armed forces regular and reserve units (Royal Navy and Royal Naval Reserve, Royal Marines and Royal Marines Reserve, Army and Territorial Army, Royal Air Force and Royal Auxiliary Air Force), military cadet forces (Sea Cadet Corps, Army Cadet Force and Air Training Corps as well as the Combined Cadet Force) and youth organisations (e.g. Scouts, Boys’ Brigade, Girls’ Brigade and Guides). Wreaths of remembrance poppies are laid on the memorials and two minutes’ silence is held at 11 a.m. Church bells are usually rung half-muffled, creating a sombre effect.
But Why A Poppy? Throughout the world the poppy is associated with the remembrance of those who died in order that we may be free. Flanders is the name of the whole western part of Belgium. It saw some of the most concentrated and bloodiest fighting of the First World War. There was complete devastation, buildings, roads, trees and natural life simply disappeared apart from the poppy which flowered every year with the coming of the warm weather, and this brought life, hope, colour and reassurance to those still fighting. John McCrae, a doctor serving with the Canadian Armed Forces was so deeply moved by what he saw in Northern France that , in 1915 in his pocket book , he scribbled down the poem “In Flanders Fields” which went on to be published in Punch , the poppy then became a popular symbol for soldiers who died in battle .
What side Do I Wear My Poppy? It is more important that we wear a poppy rather than worry about which side you should wear it, some people prefer to wear a poppy on the left over their hearts .However the general rule is wear it on the left for men because that’s where medals are worn and on the right for women because that’s where a widow would wear her husband`s medals.
“At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them”

CHURCH NEWS
Christ Church
A
s we draw close to Christmas there are some very exciting things I want to tell you about. Firstly, there is our Shoebox service on 22nd November at 10.30 a.m. when we gather together to celebrate all the shoeboxes so many different groups have collected. Each box filled by you with gifts for disadvantaged children round the world. Once again we are looking forward to a good number and we are assured by the Shoebox organisation that many of these boxes will go directly to the refugees in Calais whose children need our help so much.
With that in mind, our major appeal this year is to raise £500 to provide a tent for twelve refugees who will not have any accommodation at all this winter. We have already raised £70 from Sebert Wood School’s harvest service. If you would like to make a donation, please do contact the church, cheques should be made payable to Christ Church Moreton Hall and marked on the back ‘Tent for Refugees’. Once again we have been deeply touched by the numbers of people who have sent in bags of shopping for the food-bank. We will be repeating that operation
MORETON HALL again nearer Christmas. With more refugees coming to Britain food-banks are going to be in even greater demand. I have always been moved by the way people on Moreton Hall have remembered the true meaning of Christmas, i.e. it is better to give than to receive. Once upon a time a family who had been made refugees through no fault of their own had to escape from Israel and spend two years in exile in Egypt until the government changed. That was, of course, the Holy Family of Joseph, Mary and Jesus. They had to flee for their lives from King Herod who, in his attempt to murder Jesus, killed every new born

baby boy in and around Bethlehem. This dark side of the Christmas story is a reminder that the forces of wickedness were always set against Jesus and it helps make that story accessible as we face our problems today. The other way the story is accessible is that Jesus Christ came to be with people, have a relationship with them, and ultimately to save them. Through the wonder of His death and resurrection that is still true today. The Christmas story is for you. It is your chance to find God for yourself through the carols, through the giving, through the feasting, through the renewal of family time. At the centre of all this is a loving God who cares and is always reaching out to you, longing to bless you with His presence and change your life for good. I realise Christmas is still a long way off and there is much to do, but please remember above all else that through it all Jesus is reaching out to you. If you reach out to Him you will have one of the most special Christmases you have ever had, one that will change your life forever.

Starring Carey Mulligan, Meryl Streep, Helena Bonham Carter, Ben Whishaw, Brendan Gleeson, Anne-Marie Duff, Romola Garai Carey Mulligan and Meryl Streep fight for women’s rights in this rousing factual drama. At the turn of the 20th century in Britain, women are still struggling to have their voices heard. In a valiant attempt to get women’s voting rights passed, the Suffragette movement is formed. Led by the determined Emmeline Pankhurst (Meryl Streep), their number includes Maud Watts (Carey Mulligan) whose forward-thinking views clash with those of her husband Sonny (Ben Whishaw). As the women proceed, they are forced to confront brutal oppression in the form of the police force led by Inspector Steed (Brendan Gleeson) - nevertheless, the wheels have been set in motion and the country is set to change forever. An outstanding, all-star cast features in this powerful historical drama, one that brings a watershed moment in British history to life. Suffragette is written by Abi Morgan, who scripted the hit 2011 Margaret Thatcher biopic The Iron Lady, also starring Meryl Streep.
