Clowns
There have been some stupid individuals going around scaring young children and indeed in one case chasing a woman into her house, on the priors estate. This is a craze that came over from America, one person has been charged and fined £90 and another was cautioned, hopefully by the time you read this it will have faded out. Sadly this puts children off the genuine clowns whose businesses are going down the pan.
Vandals
Some mindless persons have been going around the youth centre and removing the covers of the manholes just for fun, sadly it was not funny for the little girl who fell into one of the holes, luckily she was not hurt but it could have been a lot worse. I have had the council up to sort this problem out. It is a stupid thing to do and very dangerous, whoever you are grow up. I have just checked and find that the manhole covers have now been cemented into position, Thanks St Edmundsbury Borough Council.
YOUTH CENTRE
After the half term we will be holding an open night free, so come along and get involved. Bring a friend we are open from 6.30pm until 8.30pm.
CYCLISTS
LOCAL NEWS
I have been asked to put something in about some very fast cyclists using the path down Symonds Road as a racing track. This is a very well used path, both for children going to school and pedestrians heading to work, not to mention dog walkers. I appreciate it is a downhill path and you can pick up speed without noticing how fast you’re going, but please be mindful of other users.
BUDDING MUSICIANS
The Bury Concert Band are looking to start up a youth band in January and if there are any young people aged 8 up to 18, then this a chance for you to get involved. Starting in January, they will be practising in Riverwalk School. You don’t have to be good but if you are interested just come along and see if it is what you would like to do or contact www.burystedmundsconcertband.co.uk.
Until next time take care, Frank Warby NOVEMBER 2016 | 11

NOTICE OF ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Wednesday 16th November 2016 at The Community Centre 7pm Tea, coffee and biscuits available, followed by a talk, More Bury St Edmunds by Martin Taylor, well-known local author, Town Guide and Chair of the Bury Society. The Community centre 8 pm “MORE Bury St Edmunds The History of Moreton Hall and the origin of some of its street and road names.
For further information, including the agenda for the 2016 AGM and minutes of the 2015 AGM, please contact the secretary Robert Houlton-Hart E Mail secertarymhra@gmail.com Bury St Edmunds Town Centre Masterplan was promised under Vision 2031. Work has started on the preparation and Issues and Options report to establish the strengths and weaknesses of the town centre at the present time and to identify opportunities and ways to address areas for improvement. Issues to be addressed include: Town Centre uses (including retail and leisure) Opportunities for mixed use development Town Centre traffic management including car parking Alternative travel options Heritage Conservation Quality of the environment Art and the public realm Accessibility for all town centre users The issues and options report is due to be published early next year with a 6-week public consultation on this leading to a draft masterplan in the late spring/early summer then a further 6-week formal consultation on the draft master plan with the final version in the autumn of 2017 and adoption in the winter of 2017.
The issue of the 6,000 extra houses and extra traffic that this will generate across the whole town, not just the centre, need to be addressed. Rumour has it that Suffolk County Council are working on a joined up traffic plan to cover the whole town but the aim of this consultation is purely for the town centre but hopefully whatever the County is working on will be fed into the proposals for the town centre. Let us have your views. It is your town. Possible issues and questions could be:Should there be Park and Ride? Should there be extra car parking provision? Should the town centre be totally pedestrianised ? Should there be more and better defined cycle and pedestrian routes separated from traffic. More Bus Services ? More Shops ?More Leisure ? More for young people to do ? Robert Houlton-Hart Secretary Moreton Hall Residents Association E Mail secretarymhra@gmail.com NOVEMBER 2016 | 15

CARDS FOR GOOD CAUSES Bury St Edmunds Charity Christmas Card Shop is stocking up for the festive season! The festive season gets under way in Bury St Edmunds on Thursday 13th October when the Cards for Good Causes charity Christmas card shop opens at ‘Olivia Benn’ on Angel Hill, a new location for 2016. Perfect for those who want to get ahead in their Christmas preparations while supporting a range of national and local charities, the shop will offer a fantastic range of cards and Christmas goods. Staffed by a team of local volunteers, the Bury St Edmunds pop-up shop is part of a network of 300 temporary shops run Cards for Good Causes, the UK’s largest multi-charity Christmas card organisation. It represents more than 250 charities including Alzheimer’s Society, Cancer Research UK, NSPCC, Parkinson’s UK and RNLI as well as selling cards from a number of local charities including East Anglian Air Ambulance, St Nicholas Hospice and Suffolk Wildlife Trust. Shoppers will be able to choose from hundreds of different Christmas card designs, as well as traditional advent calendars and candles, wrapping paper, gift tags, napkins and stocking fillers. Pat Field, Shop Manager for Cards for Good Causes says: “Buying charity Christmas cards is one of the simplest ways to support good causes this festive season. Sales of the cards not only generate funds with which the charities can make a real difference, but also purchasing and sending them helps raise awareness of the vital work these charities do. Come along and find us on Angel Hill in Bury St Edmunds by looking out for our distinctive triangular red Santa sign.” In the past ten years, charities have received more than £40 million from Cards for Good Causes, representing at least 70p in every pound, out of which charities have had to pay for the production and distribution of their Christmas cards and any VAT. Shop Opening Hours: 10am - 4pm Monday to Saturday Trading from the 13th October until the 17th December. Shop Address: Olivia Benn • 4 Angel Hill • Bury St Edmunds For further information visit www.cardsforcharity.co.uk or follow us on Facebook or Twitter.

Headmaster, Mervyn Watch with his wife Rosie.
What’s in a Fee? As I alluded to in my last piece, we are in the middle of the ‘Open Day’ season; the first round of events to encourage parents to take the plunge or at least consider the possibility of an Independent Education for their children. Having visited and potentially made your choice, the next big problem will be paying for it and making sure that you feel that you are getting value for money. This is often a difficult thing to rationalise, as it could be argued that Independent Education is a lifestyle choice rather than a must have item. Recent figures estimate that it costs approximately £150000 to educate a child from 5 to 18 at an Independent Day School and as much as £300000 if you are considering boarding. Before you take a sharp intake of breath, these are average amounts using all the available figures from Independent Schools around the country. However, it does beg the question; what am I getting for my money? It has long been a belief that our children’s education is actually a long-term investment and when you are presented with figures like the ones above, this really hits home, as the only family expense likely to cost more will be your mortgage. So what are you getting for your fee? Our Chair of Governors has, for some time, promoted our school off the back of the mantra that we provide ‘a first class education, that is real value for money’. At South Lee, we take the idea that the fee is ‘all-inclusive’ to mean exactly that, and so our parents are never surprised with endless extras on the fees bill. All our pupils have access to our fantastic Individual Development Department which provides support or extension to all our pupils as part of
the fee, where in some schools this is charged at an hourly or half-hourly rate. Likewise, lunches are included in the fee; our Chef, Gary Oakshott and his team prepare all our meals from fresh produce, delivered daily. Our Early Years and Pre Prep pupils receive specialist tuition in languages, PE and Games, IT and Music, and our ‘wrap around care’ means that for those who need it the school is open for breakfast at 7.30am and our Prep School pupils can be collected from 2nd Prep at 6pm. For more details or to arrange a visit, contact Mrs Ronge – Registrar, on 01284 754654 or visit our website. www.southlee.co.uk office@southlee.co.uk

Pauls jobs for the month General Maintenance
n Last year I remember cutting lawns up until Christmas though usually I find that by 2nd week of November that you can put away your lawn mower until Spring as plants and grass enter a state of dormancy when temperatures fall below 6c (43f). n Now is the time to do a garden check. By this I mean be prepared for any potential problems that might be caused by the weather by:- checking your fence posts to ensure they are not at the point of rotting off, sheds and gates have proper locks and latches , plant stakes are firmly in the ground are still supporting plants and outdoor taps are properly lagged.
This months poem...
Pauls
Vegetable and Fruit Garden n For an early crop of broad beans next May plant seeds this month.
n Apply glue bands to the trunks of fruit trees to prevent wingless female winter moths climbing the trunks and laying their eggs in the branches.
Flower Garden n Plant out roses making sure you fill the hole with a mixture of bone meal and peat n Still time to plant spring flowering bulbs n Pansies and violas will make an attractive display in a hanging basket or container and can be set out now.
n Tidy up your perennials. Dead stems can be cut away, any leaves removed give the bare areas a fork over and then spread a mulch of compost or manure. n Now is the time to dig up your dahlia bulbs for storage over winter in a dry, frost free place. Gently remove most of the dirt from the tubers cut back all of the growth and then keep somewhere dry upside down so any moisture drains from the centre of the tubers. Remove further dirt once the plant has dried in a further couple of weeks and keep in a little compost or covered with newspaper.
November comes And November goes, With the last red berries And the first white snows. With night coming early, And dawn coming late, And ice in the bucket And frost by the gate. The fires burn And the kettles sing, And earth sinks to rest Until next spring. - Elizabeth Coatsworth

CHURCH NEWS
Christ Church MORETON HALL I always find November one of the more sombre months. The bright glories of autumn with its reds and gold’s are fading and the crisp freshness of a snowbound winter is a long way off. The days become darker, the ground harder and unyielding and everywhere seems to be damp and unpleasant. This sombre environment is underlined by our annual act of remembrance on 11th November. As we remember the one hundredth anniversary of First World War there are, quite appropriately I think many programmes on radio and television about the suffering of those who endured that conflict. It’s good that we are reminded clearly of the horrors of war and the true price of freedom. This is reinforced almost daily by the pictures of horror we see from Aleppo and Mosul. It is not for nothing that they call this the greatest humanitarian crisis since the Second World War. This country, perhaps more than any other, understands fully the horrors of war. We are the only country endured full both World Wars from the beginning 82 | NOVEMBER 2016
to the end, without seeing our country defeated and occupied. Perhaps that is one thing that sets us apart from the rest of Europe. It is precisely because we never gave in but stood our ground, as Churchill required of us, and we were never subjugated, that we look with different eyes on the concept of a completely unified Europe under a single government, particularly if that government is unelected and alien to our way of life.
children’s baptisms, when the church has been packed to the gunnels; we have seen once again large amounts of food collected for the food-bank, and our thanks to everyone who took part in that; and there was a wonderful response to our Macmillan coffee mornings with over £700 raised.
We at Christ Church have much to give thanks for. We have had some magnificent adult and
