Brought to you by Councillor Frank Warby
TRAVELLERS
As most of you know we have had Travellers back on the football field off Heldhaw Road, we were able to get them removed quickly. The reason we could do that was due to the High Court Injunction. I have been asked to explain how the injunction works. The Injunction itself will not stop travellers gaining entrance to the site, however because they have breached the order we can get an eviction order quicker. This time it only took three days to move the travellers on. In the old days when Travellers gained entrance onto a site, by law the council had to visit the camp and advise them of the trespass law and give seven days notice before going to court and getting an eviction order. Once the order was then given the travellers had seven days to vacate or face arrest, the total time then was over 14 days. The council must abide by the law or we could face fines. With regards to the football field the council have gone out for tenders to have the field fenced off along with the piece of land on the Bartons where they like to settle. I hope these measures will prevent any more problems. I would like to thank Rev Jonathan Ford for his support to me when we attempted to prevent the travellers from getting on the field, even though they threatened to punch him in the face. All in a days work Jonathan. 08 | SEPTEMBER 2015

At last there is movement on two fronts, firstly the long awaited Play Area off Lady Miriam Way. The diggers are in and outline ground work has started on the play ground. The hold up has been in getting hold of the land and the 106 agreement between St Edmunds and Taylor Wimpey, however now it’s started, hopefully it wont be too long before we see a nice play area for the people living on the estate, sadly not for this summer. The second good news is that the ground workers are on site preparing the ground for the new school; hopefully they can progress without any more interruptions. I for one, am looking forward to seeing the school built and operational.

The youth club will open
again on the 8th September; we have reduced the cost to ÂŁ1 per child for the two hours. Club timings are from 6.30pm until 8.30pm every Tuesday night. The age range is from 8 years old to 15 years old. There are plenty of things to do, games to play and meet new friends. We are very short of helpers and would love to have at least two more male and female, if you could spare just one night a month that would be a great help.
Over 60s is still going but again
could do with more attending, come and have a coffee or tea. It’s on the first Monday of each month, no charge.
DRAINS
I had a call from a lady living on Raedwald Drive, while in her garden she stepped back on to the drain cover in her garden, the cover collapsed and she was left hanging by her arms in the hole, thankfully she is ok but it might be worth people who have these drain covers in their gardens checking to see if they are safe and not rusted away, just a cautionary word.
PARKING AND PATHWAYS
I have had several complaints regarding people parking their cars half on the road and the paths, please remember that mothers with child buggies and disabled people in buggies need the pathways clear so that they can safely go about the daily business. Overhanging hedges are another problem for the everybody on the estate, it is the responsibility of homeowners to prune their hedges and ensure that it is safe for pedestrians to use the pathways. So I ask again please make sure your hedge is cut back.
Until next time, take care, Frank Warby SEPTEMBER 2015 | 09

Dear reader,
New specialist service for Kidney patients Children across West Suffolk are being urged to get behind a Christmas fun run and support their local hospital and other good causes. The West Suffolk Hospital Charity ‘Elf Run’ will see young participants – and their parents – turn the town of Bury St Edmunds green on Sunday 6th December. Young runners will be given an elf suit and hat to take part in the 1k fun run which starts at the Abbey Gardens and ends in the Arc shopping centre – just one day after the town’s festive ice rink is officially opened. In addition to a £10 entry fee and being encouraged to get sponsored for the run, children will also be asked to bring one present that will be given to those youngsters less fortunate. All money raised from the event will go towards West Suffolk Hospital and the newly-formed Geewizz charitable trust, set up by fundraiser and charity campaigner Gina Long. Dave Gooderham, fundraising manager at the hospital, said: “We are delighted to be holding Suffolk’s first Elf Run in December. “Our fundraising events centre around healthy living and fitness and this is perfect for schools, local groups and young children alike.
“What better way to start the Christmas period than by becoming one of Santa’s elves and helping to support your local hospital and other good causes.” The Elf Run was originally started last year in Newcastle’s Metro Centre where more than 2,000 young people and their parents took part. Phil Gray, the founder of Elf Run said “We are delighted to bring the event to West Suffolk and support a much loved and respected local hospital and the Geewizz charitable trust.” The fundraiser, which is supported by Ourburystedmunds and Arc shopping centre, was officially launched on Thursday thanks to 40 little elves from Guildhall Feoffment Primary School. For more information on the event, which has no upper or lower age limit, email fundraising@wsh.nhs.uk.
If you have any questions about fundraising, any of the events mentioned above or how you can help the hospital, please contact fundraising@wsh.nhs.uk or call 01284 712952 12 | SEPTEMBER 2015

It’s almost time for a flu vaccination GPs are encouraging people in at-risk groups to start thinking about getting their winter flu jab.
Help prevent falls and trips Don’t underestimate the consequences of an older person having a fall. A fall can result in broken hips or bones and even early death. In addition to the pain and distress a fall can cause, it can take away someone’s selfconfidence, leaving them afraid to go out and socially isolated. The statistics on falls are staggering: l 50% of people aged over 80 suffer a fall each year l 33% of people aged over 65 suffer a fall each year l 1 in 10 elderly falls result in serious injury l 25% of all 999 calls are falls related One way of reducing the chance of falling is by replacing old and worn slippers. Many people have a favourite pair of comfy slippers that could be potentially dangerous. Worn soles can easily lead to a slip and slippers that fit poorly can cause a trip. The safest slippers are those with good quality non-slip rubber soles, are enclosed and have a fastener. So, if you have a pair of old and worn slippers, please think about replacing them. And if you’ve got an elderly friend or relative think about giving them an early Christmas present of a new pair of slippers. 16 | SEPTEMBER 2015
From September GP practices will be contacting patients in at-risk groups, informing them of their entitlement to a free NHS flu vaccination. For your convenience many GP practices will be operating walk- in flu clinics. At risk-groups entitled to a free NHS flu vaccination from their GP: l You are aged 65 years or over. l You are pregnant. l You are living in a long-stay residential care home. l You are the carer of an elderly or disabled person whose welfare may be at risk if you fall ill. l You are a child aged 2, 3 or 4 years. l You are aged six months to 65 years and have a heart problem; a chest complaint or breathing difficulties including bronchitis and emphysema; a kidney disease; lowered immunity due to disease or treatment (such as steroid medication or cancer treatment); a liver disease; had a stroke or TIA; diabetes; a neurological condition e.g. multiple sclerosis or cerebral palsy; a problem with, or removal of, their spleen e.g. sickle cell disease. If you are someone in an at risk group, or know someone who is, please don’t underestimate how serious flu can be. A serious case of flu could result in bronchitis or pneuomina, a worsening of your diabetes and for pregnant women premature labour or even stillbirth.

Welcome to the 19th hole, a place for golf tips, reviews and everything golf related.
It was Jason’s day in the spotlight at last After many attempts to claim his first major title Jason Day finally got the job done at the US PGA Championship at Whistling Straits. He didn’t just win, he won with a score of 20 under par, which broke Tiger Woods’ major record of 19 under at the 2000 Open Championship. I popped along to Velopro with our very own Jeremy Procter. Jeremy had booked a consultation with Kevin as he was suffering from a few sore areas! After an initial chat Kevin was able to find out what sort of bicycle he had and what particular parts of his body were giving him discomfort. He also asked if there were any previous injuries, in Jeremy’s case lower back and knee trouble. Firstly Kevin explained that so many people buy a bike the old fashioned way, measure the inside leg and off you go!! I was to learn that there is an awful lot more to it than this!
Jeremy changed into his Lycra shorts and top and donned his riding shoes while Kevin got his bike up in the inspection area. He then asked Jeremy to start pedalling slowly. I noticed a camera that was capturing all the movements of Jeremy’s feet and knees. Next Kevin placed two lasers on either side to check the position of his feet on the pedals, it was apparent that Jeremy’s weren’t in the correct position. After adjusting the cleats on

his shoes Kevin was happy that these were now sitting where they should be. Looking at Jeremy’s knees, bottom and shoulders, Kevin pulled out what looked like a large school compass and set about adjusting the seat height and position to achieve the maximum extension of the legs to reduce the stress for pain free cycling. When Kevin felt that Jeremy was in the correct riding position he then recorded another pedalling session and played them both back together. I couldn’t believe the difference the alterations had made, I am no expert but it looked like the perfect set up to me. Finally came the sit bone test (yes, in his bum!) Have you ever been on a long bike ride and felt like someone had kicked you in it after wards?! After placing his bum on a padded board Kevin drew two pressure marks and matched them up on a colour chart to decide if he was using the right size saddle, which he was, so job done after just over an hour and another satisfied and pain free customer. I caught up with Kevin afterwards and he explained that there is an awful lot of cyclist out there who have never had a consultation and are riding around clocking up some serious miles on an ill-fitting bike. Sometimes small adjustments that
are made will make a huge difference to way you perform and feel on a bike. Velopro is the complete shop for a cyclist, whether you are looking to upgrade your bike or treating yourself to some new kit they have something for everyone. They also have a number of different types of fits from new bike to existing bike fits and they can even check your flexibility! So if you are just a Sunday rider or someone who does a lot of cycling it’s worth having Kevin and the team check you and your bike over, or what a great gift for a friend or loved one?!

Meet our new Columnist....
Nicola Delglyn Osteomyologist Physical & Nutritional Therapy Summer holidays over and I am not ashamed to admit that the squabbling had begun to fray my nerves to the point that I may have been developing a dependency on the mood-altering properties of a nice cold glass of bubbly of an evening. Not good when you advocate a healthy lifestyle to people most of the year! I am human after all! However, I am itching to get back to normality. Don’t get me wrong, I love my children dearly and have enjoyed our day trips out and about, playing and generally have a real good time. I have loved not having to be up and out of the house by 8.00am every morning, and it’s been a joy to laze around at home instead of hoping no-one notices that I’m doing the school run in my pyjamas. I’ve adored being free of the tyranny of coming up with some innovative variation on a tuna-sandwich-without-butter-orsalad-and-absolutely-no-crusts five days a week for those dreaded lunch boxes, and I am not relishing the return of repetitively corralling my girls into putting their shoes on and brushing their teeth without the unnecessary but inevitable anarchy. My girls feel the same way too. They’ve loved being on school holidays but the summer break is too long (we get NINE weeks!) and we’re all more than ready for a seasonal change of pace and focus on a new school term. That’s surely the sign of a great summer break. I’ll miss my girls enormously - of course I will but when we debrief about their first day back over a blueberry and banana muffin at the kitchen table, I know we’ll all feel the benefits of back to school season. After all, absence does indeed make the heart grow fonder.
24 | SEPTEMBER 2015
Treatments to beat pain for I’ve touched on the dreaded lunchboxes. My girls have never really liked sandwiches, so I’ve always had to think of creative lunch ideas that are nutritious and are NOT sandwiches. If your kids are like mine, and you struggle with what to put in their lunch boxes, take heart! I’ve rounded up a whole bunch of lunch ideas for kids who don’t like sandwiches! Hopefully some of these yummy and healthy ideas will take the stress out of packing lunches at your house. You can even use these lunch ideas for holidays and weekends too!
Here we go – Lets go Bento! • Why not plan the week in advance so you’re not frazzled in the morning and ask the kids to design their own lunchbox? Give them a list of ingredients and leave the rest up to them! • Remember that mixing lots of different finger foods, from blueberries and grapes to cherry tomatoes, mini broccoli florettes, banana sushi or carrot and cheese coins make eating more of a treat for kids • Combine a rainbow of colours to make lunch even more appealing – asparagus, cauliflower, red peppers and carrots, and fruit cocktail dessert with cherries, melon balls and tangerine sections • Make sure there’s plenty of fruits and vegetables included for necessary vitaminrich high-fibre • Fruit and veg are also great sources of ‘good’ carbohydrates – ideal for growth generally, and to fuel your child’s brain power for afternoon school work
HEALTH & BEAUTY
Physical & Nutritional Therapy adults, children & athletes • Try to avoid ‘bad’ carbs like white bread and white pasta, as the sugar and starch will cause energy dips after lunch (a teachers nightmare!) • Cut cheese into sticks or use a pastry cutter for different shapes. Cheese is calcium-rich and a useful protein alternative to bread and packaged meat • Energy rich seeds and raisins are a great snack, full of vitamins, minerals and carbohydrates, sunflower and pumpkin seeds are fabulous
5 great packed lunch ideas
1. Tacos Try beans with lettuce, corn, tomatoes and grated cheese or chicken strips with avocado and shredded cabbage 2. Wraps Try wholewheat pitta with hummous, cucumber and cous cous, little gem lettuce-leaf pockets with tuna, tomato and olives inside, or roll-ups with shredded turkey, spinach and shredded brussel sprouts 3. Salads Try mixed-vegetable crudités in endive boats with different dips or edamame salad with quinoa or brown rice, sweetcorn and sunflower seeds 4. Brunch Hard-boiled egg, baked sweet potato slices and green peas, cold frittata filled with broccoli florets and mixed veggies, or savoury wholewheat muffins with ham, cheese and courgette, broccoli cheddar patties (with sweet potato), spinach rice and sweet corn patties
5. Kebabs Try a mixture of cheese cubes with celery, olives, apples and grapes or mushrooms, cherry tomatoes and pineapple. You could replace the cheese with bite-sized cuts of roast chicken or tofu 6. Little treats Banana sushi, made from wholemeal tortilla - just switch peanut butter for honey, tahini or sweet coconut spread (remember no nuts allowed at school) Cheese & carrot “coins” made with mini pastry cutters. You can also use cucumbers, watermelon, cantaloupe, toast, or whatever taste combo’s your children like. Ask them what would taste good together and then get creative!
Savvy tip Use pastry cutters to make star and heartshaped cucumber and courgette slices, cheese and make faces with cherry-tomato eyes and carrot-strip smiles. You could even tuck in a little message – a cute drawing, a message that you love them, or even a daily silly joke they can tell at the school lunch table (especially if it’s their first week). Think outside the lunchbox! Be more creative with your kids packed lunches and they’re sure to go down a treat. Good luck and hope they enjoy! I wanted to share with you an
article written by Luke Haslett on sprinting for fat loss, as this is something I incorporate into a lot of my sessions.
PT
JOE
MY NAME IS JOE SADLER AND I HAVE BEEN A QUALIFIED PERSONAL TRAINER FOR 5 YEARS, WORKING FROM THE MORETON HALL HEALTH CLUB.
Since the mid 1990’s there has been a vast amount of research conducted into sprint intervals (SI) as a fat loss protocol. SI training, otherwise known as high intensity interval training (HIIT) have been shown to improve fat oxidative capacity (Burgomaster et al. 2007), decrease metabolic risk factors (Whyte et al. 2010), increase insulin sensitivity (Richards et al. 2010) improve energy system efficiency (Trapp et al. 2008) and are also recognized as a time efficient fat loss protocol when compared with traditional endurance training (Burgomaster et al. 2007). SI training demands a large amount of energy and places the anaerobic energy system under a significant amount of physiological stress over a short period of time. The stress response to this bout of exercises results in significantly elevated human growth hormone levels (Stokes et al. 2010) and oxygen consumption (Tomlin and Wenger, 2001) to help restore the metabolic processes to their baseline conditions. This post-exercise oxygen uptake in excess of that required at rest has been termed excess postexercise oxygen consumption (EPOC). EPOC during the slow recovery period has been associated with the removal of lactate and H+, increased pulmonary and cardiac function, elevated body temperature, catecholamine effects, and glycogen re-synthesis (Tomlin and Wenger, 2001). Incorporating SI Training Into Your Program Design Firstly SI training is for advanced trainees and athletes only. This is not a beginner or novice trainee protocol. If you haven’t sprinted or performed any intense running previously I would advise you to prime your body before incorporating this type of conditioning work within
your program design. There are a significantly greater amount of injury risk factors associated with SI when compared with traditional endurance training. Thus my recommendation would be significantly reduce these risk factors by ensuring that you are both mobile and flexible before incorporating SI within your program design. Dynamic mobility movements – such as squat-to-stand or various band traction movements – help to open up our bodies. If we unlock our movement, we can get into better positions, move through a greater range of motion with more control which will ultimately result in greater force production, muscle activation, improved performance and ultimately greater results. Beginner Protocol • 40 meter sprint intervals x 10 @ 85 percent of 100-meter time • 2-minute recovery interval between sets. Moderate Protocol • 40 meter sprint intervals x 10 @ 85 percent of 100-meter time • 90 seconds recovery interval between sets. Advanced Protocol • 60 meter sprint intervals x 10 @ 85 percent of 100-meter time • 60 seconds recovery interval between sets. Take Home Points • When it comes to designing your cardio regimen just as resistance training must be periodized so to must SI training. • Keep your program design basic. There is no need to over-complicate things. • Competitive athletes in training I would recommend no more than two SI training sessions per week. • For recreational advanced trainees I would recommend between two and three SI sessions per week.
If you have any questions you would like to ask please do not hesitate in asking. Joe Sadler Personal Trainer M: 07917 714557 E: ptjoesadler@hotmail.com

HEALTH & BEAUTY
Beating Breast Cancer This is Lindas last update on her treatment so we wish her well for the future and would like to thank her for sharing this experience with us all, especially for any of our readers going through the same tough journey...
I am writing this sitting on the window seat in my lounge looking out at the pouring rain with Tillie lying beside me (even she doesn’t want to go outside!). Although the weather is gloomy I am feeling thankful to be able to sit here feeling healthy and alive after having undergone Chemotherapy, Surgery and Radiation for my Breast Cancer. I have finally finished all the conventional treatments involved and this will be my last article you guys will have to endure from me!
Tillie...
Looking back at all the articles I have written since February they have brought back up some emotions of what I have been through these past 10 months. Just to recap, I was diagnosed in October last year with invasive Triple Negative Breast Cancer. I went through five sessions
28 | SEPTEMBER 2015
of chemotherapy, which was extremely gruelling, both physically and emotionally, particularly after the first one when I was admitted to Hospital for a few days. Thankfully from my second one onwards I was able to get up each day and function reasonably well for the remainder of the treatments and therefore, as far as I was concerned, that was a bonus! Yes, there were many nasty and horrible side effects, but each day I was grateful that I wasn’t being admitted to hospital and I could function well enough to cope. After my fifth chemotherapy my Oncologist decided to send me straight to surgery - the chemotherapy hadn’t done its job on my tumours! To have to go through all of that for it not to have had any affect wasn’t the best news to hear…clearly my cancer was a defiant so and so – but not as much as me! I was then admitted to hospital for my surgery in April where I had a mastectomy with immediate reconstruction. When I returned 2 weeks later for my results I had more bad news – the Cancer had spread to my Lymph Nodes. Therefore, I was back in hospital for another surgery where the lymph nodes were removed from my armpit
(otherwise known as axillary clearance). Although we are now in August, I still feel that I am healing from the surgeries and I know it takes months for everything to settle down and the tissues to heal properly. As the Lymph Nodes were infected, I gave in to the Radiotherapy and attended Addenbrooke’s Hospital every day for 15 sessions where both the chest wall and the collarbone area were targeted. I completed this at the end of July and only now are the side effects subsiding and my skin is returning to normal, thankfully. I now have a reprieve for a couple of months and don’t return to the Hospital until October where I have appointments to see both the Oncologist and Breast Surgeon. So in terms of all the conventional treatments – I am FINISHED!! The last 10 months have been the toughest that I have had to experience in my life, and whilst looking back now, I feel that the time has passed really quickly – I can be proud of myself for getting through the tough times I have endured and give myself a huge pat on the back (or bottle of champagne!). Surely anything that I may

face in the future now will be a doddle compared to having gone through breast cancer! There is a lot of support out there to help you through – some of which I did take advantage of, and helped me to cope. To name but a few that I utilised; the HOPE course run by Macmillan was a great help and support, the Look Good Feel Good workshop at Addenbrooke’s helps with confidence and applying make up as you loose all your hair, eyelashes and eyebrows and the Wellness days that are run by St Nicholas Hospice gives you some time to relax and be pampered. I would recommend anyone going through this to talk to the staff at the Macmillan Unit and make use of anything that helps you cope on day-to-day basis. Speaking of Macmillan – I have been trying to raise some money by selling my dresses through Facebook and so far I have raised £260 for them. Through this journey I have met some very brave and lovely people who have been affected by Cancer, some of which I know I will continue to meet up with and build a friendship with. Most of my close friends and family have been there for me too and the saying that “you know who your friends are” in times of crisis is so very true. I’m very self reliant and have dealt with a lot of this by myself, but my family and friends have been there for me and I Thank them and all the people that have supported me through this for that. Of course I can’t forget my kitten Tillie
either. She is coming up to being a year old in September and has been great company to have through this, some similar traits to me for sure… although I don’t do No 2’s in my garden!! I will continue to have regular Tumour Marker blood tests to monitor my bloods and will have regular Thermal Imaging to keep an eye on any changes in my body. My aim is to start back with Yoga and Pilates once I have healed properly and to regain the strength that I have lost. I may even try harder to get to grips with meditation or some form of relaxation! Now it is time to move forward. I said right at the beginning of this journey that I would approach this with nutrition, lifestyle changes and supplementation / homeopathy. I have done this and believe I would not have got through it as well as I feel I have without some of those changes and the people that have helped. I also said that statistics are based on the ‘average’ person in terms of survival rates. The next few years are going to be tough on me, particularly with the potential recurrence as it is such an aggressive type of cancer and had spread to my lymph nodes. I will endeavour not to dwell on statistics and I don’t want to be ‘average’ so I will take control of my life and rebalance my mind, body and spirit. I’ve accomplished a lot on the physical side to help, and now its time to look also at the emotional aspects to help
me progress. I will learn from having the Cancer – whatever it has to show me – it’s a journey and an experience. Having gone through a lot of emotions including shock, anger, despair and denial – now it’s time for reconstruction and hopefully acceptance and hope – time to look forward and plan things for the future. Your mortality certainly comes more to the forefront when you receive the news that you have Cancer, but none of us know when our time in this body is up! Lastly, thank you all for reading my articles. One of the main reasons for writing about my journey, is that if I can help just one person who is going through this, and give them some bit of advice from what I have been through, and the tools that I have utilised to help, then that can only be a good thing. I will feel that I have passed on some of my experiences and what helped get me through and survive to hopefully what will be a long and healthy future… with my long hair back!
Until you are broken, you don’t know what you’re made of. Being broken gives you the ability to build yourself all over again, but this time around build yourself stronger than ever. Therefore you will be unbreakable. - Melissa Molomo

“Lights, Music, Action!” is a unique
independent Performing Arts School now at the start of its 20th year. Based at King Edward VI Upper School in Bury St Edmunds, it runs classes for ages 6 to 18 years on Saturdays during term-time. All staff are highly qualified and CRB checked, whilst our class prices remain extremely competitive.
The atmosphere is alive and buzzing: tutors are sympathetic to those with less confidence and the aim is to acquire skills and to set the high standards required in staging frequent public performances in a fun and creative environment. There are classes for dancers, singers, actors and instrumentalists…but “Lights, Music, Action!” is unique in that students can choose their classes. Singers can specialise in Musical Theatre/ Cabaret, Contemporary Vocals or Classic Vocals. The Stage Band tackles anything from “The Commitments” to Latin Jazz and Swing, while the Dance Classes are contemporary and stage-orientated. Actors cover a huge variety of styles, while learning to improvise, or to perfect their skills in exam-work. And there’s never a shortage of performance opportunities. Students appear in a range of events, from local festivals and fund-raisers to high-profile gigs at the Theatre Royal, London Palladium, Royal Albert Hall, Covent Garden to mention a few. Each year LMA puts on an average of six main shows to allow students to put into practice what they have been learning in classes. These range from smaller showcases to large full scale Musicals. Recent full scale shows have included: Into The Woods by
Stephen Sondheim, The Addams Family by Andrew Lippa, CATS by Andrew Lloyd Webber, ‘13’ by Jason Robert Brown, Peter Pan by Stiles and Drew, Cinderella by Mack David, Fame by David de Silva, Aladdin by Alan Menken and Children of Eden by Stephen Schwartz. LMA Students have been successful in gaining places in NYT and NYMT productions including ‘Sweeney Todd’ and ‘13’ in London’s West End. Senior LMA students also regularly perform with other local groups including: Irving Stage Company, Bury Operatic and SYPT. Students have the opportunity to gain nationally recognised qualifications with regular exams in ABRSM, Musical Theatre, Dance and LAMDA: Grade 6 – 8 earning UCAS points. We have a 100% pass rate with the majority of students gaining Merits and Distinctions at LMA. During the School holidays short workshops and full residential Performing Arts Courses are available. Please ask for further details on dates and costs. Visit us for a day, and get the LMA buzz… there’s something for everyone, from the very timid performer looking for confidence onstage to the highly ambitious! Ex-students are currently on the professional circuit in the West End, in Opera, in Cabaret, Edinborough Fringe or running their own Stage Schools; with many more in training at top national centres. Ex LMA Student Matt Cardle (X-factor winner 2010) is now performing as DJ Huey Calhoun in Memphis at the West End.

Look out for flashing bunny ears! The Girls Night Out sponsored walk, in aid of St Nicholas Hospice Care, which is taking place for the seventh time on 12 September
Keep your eyes peeled for flashing bunny ears in Bury St Edmunds on 12 September, when more than 1,600 women take part in the annual Girls Night Out walk. The sponsored moonlight walk, in aid of St Nicholas Hospice Care, has two routes – six and 11.2-miles – with the longer making its way through the Southgate and Moreton Hall areas. Participants wear their pyjamas and flashing bunny ears for the event, which organisers hope could raise £150,000 for the Hospice. Jenny Baskett, St Nicholas Hospice Care Events and Challenges Fundraiser, said: “If you are driving through Bury on the evening of 12 September and you see any of our wonderful walkers, please do give them a friendly toot! “I’m delighted so many women have signed up and hugely grateful for the support we get from volunteers – from marshalling to handing out water and snacks – and the community.”
40 | SEPTEMBER 2016
The walk starts at 8pm on Angel Hill and all walkers are expected to finish by midnight. Entertainment along the route includes morris dancers and a pipe band, as well as popular ‘waterboys’ handing out refreshments to walkers. At the end, everyone is welcomed back with hot chocolate and bacon rolls. There is still time to take part – go to www.stnicholashospicecare.org.uk for more information. Registration costs £15, including a T-shirt and flashing bunny ears.

RESULT DRIVING SCHOOL
of Bury St Edmunds was formed by two instructors in 2007. Now with five instructors they are well established in the area, highly rated by pupils and parents alike, who regularly recommended them to family and friends.
RESULT DRIVING SCHOOL
Result has the tools to help pupils achieve test standard as quickly as possible. Encouraging parents giving private practice to sit in on a lesson helps parents understand the standards required for today’s driving test. With competitive lesson prices and free access to the Theory Pro website, pupils learn and practise for the Theory Test without the cost of books, DVD’s or Phone Apps. Mock driving tests can also be arranged with another instructor, helping prepare pupils for the practical test. With both male and female instructors, Result Driving School offers a professional and pupil focused environment in which to learn, and all with a high first time pass rate.

OCR
BY ANDREW SOUTHWOOD
I
have recently been introduced to the wonderfully weird world of obstacle course racing, or ‘OCR’ to those that know… not to be confused with OCD, which is something quite different. Imagine a large field in the middle of nowhere with several hundred people out to get wet, muddy and push themselves to their physical and mental limits. A higher proportion of beards than a park run, but less than a beer festival. Most are just ‘normal’ people like you or I, not super fit athletes, a few hen parties, and quite a lot of charity runners - just a real mix of like minded people, young and old – a bit of a party atmosphere. The nature of OCR is such that you are encouraged to offer a helping hand (or shoulder, boot etc…) as you go. The reason for this is simple, as you yourself will be in need of a bit of a
54 | SEPTEMBER 2015
pull or push at some stage. There’s a genuine sense of camaraderie. The obstacles, of which there were about 20, were big. No, bigger than that. They were huge. A wooden pyramid structure the size of a house to climb over, sheep dip style dunking pools, barbed wire to crawl under, a vertical wooden wall 10ft high… you get the idea. My personal favourites included my old nemesis, the monkey bars (over a clay pit of cold muddy water of course) that defeated me again, as my grip spectacularly failed me halfway across. I was blissfully unaware that near the end of the route (9km ish) there was a lake swim with floating obstacles to negotiate. This was slightly alarming, as I am not a natural swimmer and frankly I look like a drowning dog at the best of times. Add to that 45
mins running and wearing full muddy kit, and swimming becomes ten times more challenging I can assure you. Still, my life may have flashed before me a few times but I survived, somehow, and after 2 minutes coughing up water and regaining my composure on the bank I was ready to proceed to the finish line… via the 8ft overhanging wall, obviously. So, the story of my race is fairly standard I should imagine. Essentially I went off quick, nearly went the wrong way, swallowed a few litres of muddy river water, almost drowned twice, thought I’d lost a trainer more than once, sustained a few cuts and bruises… it was great fun! I am already looking forward to my next OCR. Special thanks to Nick (www. nicksmithfitness.co.uk) who dragged/persuaded 15 of his Moreton Hall boot campers to this event. We had an absolute blast.

I’ve recently opened my own purpose built grooming salon at my home in Norton on the outskirts of Bury St. Edmunds, which has always been a dream of mine. Although I work from home I also offer a collection and drop off service within a 10 mile radius if you are unable to travel. I take pride in all I do, offering a friendly, caring, professional service, pampering your pooch in my new King Clips salon.
Where the magic happens...
As well as the City & Guilds qualification, I also have a First Diploma in Animal Care and National Diploma in Animal Management, all of which I gained while studying at Otley college. Our family have a few pets of our own, a 10-year-old Springer Spaniel, a five-year-old Toy Poodle, a 14-year-old cat, a five-year-old Welsh Section A pony, two Guinea Pigs, seven chickens and two fish. As you can probably tell, animals have always been a big part of my life. garden confidential BY PAUL CLARKE
PAULS PLANT OF THE MONTH
Agapanthus What to do in your garden in September
Sometimes known as the African Lily, Agapanthus are beautiful perennial flowers shades of blue, purple pink or white can be acquired. They can be grown in a sunny spot in the border but they are often best grown in a container as some varieties won’t survive exposure to a cold winter. Plant crowns in spring, 5cm (2in) below the ground and avoid planting in shade, as plants will either grow poorly or develop a mass of lush foliage at the expense of flowers. Containers are best moved to a sheltered spot over winter and protected with fleece. Agapanthus are best divided if they become pot bound and in this way you can also increase your number of plants.

General Maintenance • Scarify and spike the lawn and apply an autumn lawn feed • If you are thinking of creating a new lawn early September is good for sowing lawn seed though delay turfing a new lawn until the end of the month or October. • If you have bald patches in your lawn scuff up the soil with a fork and apply grass seed and keep watering • The last hedge clip of the year can take place this month to keep them neat and tidy and control their size • Top up bird baths regularly • Clean out bird feeders and start to replenish with seeds and nuts • Cut back tree branches and hedges overhanging your garden border • Now is a good time to clean water butts as accumulated debris can pollute the water • If you have Water lilies in your pond you will know they grow vigorously. GCSE results are a wake-up call for you and your children
– their next step could just be the most important one they take – writes Yasmin Jeffery, Head of Marketing and Communications at West Suffolk College
Conventional A-Levels at school are not the only way into a successful university, a great career or a rewarding professional life. Did you know that many familiar faces on the university milk round, such as Ernst & Young, PWC and Nestlé are increasingly recruiting school leavers and apprentices? That’s right, apprenticeships are not only for training the next generation of skilled bricklayers and plumbers. It’s also true that students who’ve had two years focusing on their core subject, in say, photography, or fashion, tend to have stronger portfolios and consequently a better chance of direct entry to sought-after degree courses than school-leavers with A-levels. The changing face of post-16 education is creating many new opportunities for school leavers that simply weren’t around a generation ago. The diversity of employment opportunities and the desire on the part of firms to access talented people younger, is having a big impact – providing a positive impetus to early specialisation and placing a higher value on technical skills and knowledge. It’s a good time to be at West Suffolk College. The diplomas and qualifications offered here are not only recognised by UCAS, but comprise a unique vocational and academic mix that universities and employers value. 72 | SEPTEMBER 2015
But there’s more to it than having the right courses. West Suffolk College is successful also because of its ethos and approach to teaching and student welfare. Its belief in putting students and their success at the heart of everything is convincing, and relevant. The College treats its students as individuals, offering the right educational package for them. And it’s quite a package. Students can expect outstanding industry-trained teachers, excellent learning opportunities, simply astonishing facilities (go take a look if you don’t believe me), collaboration and placements with employers and designated personal support tutors. Going down the college route isn’t right for everyone, but then, neither is sixth form. The range and depth of subjects taught at West Suffolk College means that if you’ve got a potential PhD scientist, an entrepreneur, an expert plumber, a would-be west-end star, or practically anything else in your house, they will have all the opportunities to be the best and to reach their potential.
Spaces are still available on our apprenticeships and courses starting this year and remember if your young person starts at sixth form and finds it’s not right for them, don’t worry they can still switch to one of our courses.

HALLO FRIENDS!
I hope you’re all reading this in the relaxing sunshine whilst making the most of the end of the summer sun! Just throwing out a special happy birthday to my fantastic brother and dad this month!

UNICORNS It’s all good in the hood! RULE
I’ve really enjoyed the summer hols and being able to write this month’s page whilst relaxing and eating a scrumptious breakfast in The Coffee House. I chose to have scrambled egg on toast with bacon, beans and tomatoes. The bacon was tasty and crispy just how I like it. The smoothies and milkshakes are on point! I’m happily working my way through them – the next one on my list is the blackberry and raspberry smoothie. A big thanks goes to Lucy and her team, you always make me feel well looked after and welcomed! I had to remember to take one of their popular sausage rolls for my dad – he loves them!
At the moment there is a craze about unicorns! Both boys and girls are talking about them, there’s clothes and teddies of them and now Paperchase has joined in. It’s all about the unicorns! They are selling unicorn notebooks, folders, pencils, rubbers – the list is endless! Keep calm and love unicorns!
sour challenge results
Last month I ran a competition for you to take photos of each other eating sour sweets to see who made the funniest face! I have enjoyed doing this with my family and friends and receiving your hilarious photos! It was hard to judge, but the winning photo is… drum roll AARON ! Well done, you made me laugh so hard! A bag of sour sweets are on their way to you! Please make sure you are brushing your teeth well after all the sour sweets or I’ll be in trouble big time with the dentists in Bury!

Help us save Magistrates Court – send us the evidence Following the recent announcement by the Ministry of Justice about its proposal to close Bury St Edmunds Magistrates Court, people are being asked to provide evidence of the damage this could do to local justice. Cllr John Griffiths, Leader of St Edmundsbury Borough Council, said: “Personally I find it astonishing that the Ministry of Justice would even consider closing our court, especially in such a rural area. For many here in West Suffolk and particularly those who rely on public transport, for example, getting to Ipswich for 10am could be an incredibly difficult challenge, not to mention getting home afterwards. “Access to local justice is hugely important and I am asking people to let us know how this proposal would affect them if they had to attend as a witness, defendant or as a legal representative. We will then use this evidence 76 | SEPTEMBER 2015
in our own response to the consultation, and to strengthen the offer we have already made to government that they could share buildings, facilities and technology with us elsewhere in the town if the current court building is no longer fit for purpose.” Examples of the difficulties the court’s closure would cause can be emailed, by 21 September, to: court@westsuffolk.gov.uk or posted to: Cllr John Griffiths, St Edmundsbury Borough Council, West Suffolk House, Bury St Edmunds, IP33 3YU. The council is also calling on people to put forward their views by taking part in the Ministry of Justice consultation, which closes on 8 October, at https://consult.justice.gov. uk/digital-communications/proposal-onthe-provision-of-court-and-tribunal-es/ user_uploads/official-sensitive_south-eastconsultation_final_050815.pdf

Supporting people where they work Workplace chaplains are there to support staff in difficult or stressful times. So why should a chaplain become involved in the life of a company? Are there real benefits for employers and employees from regular visiting and support of a chaplain from a faith community? My name is Joel Foyster. I work for Chaplain in the Workplace (CITW) a registered charity based in Bury St Edmunds and I visit work places offering an independent pastoral and advocacy role. A few weeks ago I received a call from the Welfare department of a local organisation I visit following the tragic death of a young person. Together we worked as a team, with the company providing the necessary HR and Welfare support and I provided assistance offering a listening ear to his family and helping his work colleagues face up to the death of a respected friend and colleague. Three weeks later we worked together again as I arranged a Memorial service at the place of work. I was grateful that the company took this very seriously and together we were able to give strong support to colleagues and his family including a good turnout at the funeral.
What do Chaplains do and how and where do they work? So what do I do? I always enter a place of work by agreement with the managers. My presence is supplementary to existing support services like HR and Occupational Health. As Chaplain I usually visit weekly or monthly across a variety of workplaces including, retail shops, supermarkets and a college. I work on a ‘meet and greet’ arrangement which involves wandering around with intent, not to disrupt work but to catch the eye, whether it is just to say “hello” or to spare a couple of minutes to talk to people. In an era where communication seems to be more through electronic means than face-to-face, contact is vitally important. The spoken word is personal and special. There are always those who, for many reasons would rather avoid me and their privacy is always respected. As chaplain my role is to learn how work affects people in their relationships, to offer time to listen, to help with needs, provide encouragement and support in identifying the options for coping with work, home and personal difficulties. It is often difficult for people to share their personal or work related difficulties with colleagues or managers, and an independent ear can help. I often meet employees off-site for a chat over coffee which preserves confidentiality. A chaplain quite often becomes a bridge builder, facilitating relationships between different sections of the organisation. Some examples of what people often wish to talk about are:
Personal difficulties as a result of stress, illness, crises, debt, relationship difficulties Work related issues and options for coping with difficulties. Faith issues If you work in Bury St Edmunds I am available to discuss any issue, whether it is a situation at work or at home. Please do contact me I am here to help.

eptember is upon us and, although many of us have enjoyed our summer holidays, quite a few of us will be looking forward to the children returning to school. While we enjoy their company it will be good to go back to a more structured existence and get on with all those little jobs that need doing. There is much to occupy our minds this autumn. As we look back, perhaps we will have fond memories of the sensational test series against Australia, or perhaps we will be remembering the shooting near the railway station, or maybe we will remember that this time, due to the sensible legal precautions taken by the Borough, our estate did

not experience a long-term visitation by travellers or face the enormous cost of cleaning up after them. Well done to the prompt work of the Borough officials in getting this remedied. Maybe you will be looking forward to the new school which is supposed to open in September next year. I for one will be praying very hard that the transition from three tier to two tier will not have adverse effects on the hundreds of children involved in it. I know personally what it is like to have unexpected breaks in education and the damage it can do. My prayer for the staff and pupils is that no one will lose out in the long term because of the decisions that have been made.
MORETON HALL Many of us will, of course, be looking forward to Harvest Festival. At Christ Church we will be having a special service on Sunday 4th October. Watch out for the large tractors. Harvest is a time when for thousands of years people of all faith communities have gathered to give thanks to God for the bounties of the harvest. In Jewish history this was known as the Feast of Booths or Tabernacles when people gathered in special temporary huts in Jerusalem. This reminded them of the way God sustained them through agriculture but also how he sustained them through their journey in the wilderness. It gave them a chance to look back with thankfulness and to look forward with optimism. On Moreton Hall we have much to give thanks for. God has blessed this community year on year all the time I have been here. The same is true with church life. While we face significant financial challenges we always seem to have the resources and the people to meet them. Therefore I look forward with confidence to the days and weeks that lie ahead. I sense that God’s hand is with us. If we continue to seek Him earnestly day by day and try to

SEPTEMBER walk in His ways as best we can, we will know His guiding, protecting and providing hand. This year Christ Church will be taking part in the Macmillan Cancer Support Coffee Morning initiative. I hope many of you will come along between 10.00 and 11.30 a.m. on Monday 20th September when we will be serving tea, coffee and homemade cakes. This September is a very special time for Jane and m as we will celebrate 25 years of ministry on the estate. We can look back to when there were barely a thousand homes and very few public buildings other than the pub. It has caused us a great deal of delight and occasionally some anxiety to see the estate and the church grow, and to watch the community come together and for us to play a small part in that. We are very thankful for the way God has blessed us and we have been able to observe how He has blessed you. I hope and pray that this autumn we can all give thanks together and look forward to the future with confidence.
