Liver Lover! As we are fast approaching the Season of Excess, it’s about time we started thinking about how we are going to a) Preserve our sanity and b) Look after our Liver. I will come back to the sanity issue a little later and focus for now on how best to avoid completely toxifying your liver over the Xmas period and what natural remedies and treatments you can think about to help look after your liver if you overindulge very slightly. The Liver is an amazing organ – the only one in the body that can completely regenerate itself, even if ¾ of your liver were removed it would re-grow back to its original size – a real wonder how people like George Best managed to completely destroy theirs – that must have been a lot of the drink he consumed! The Liver is the main detoxification centre of the body – it processes all the toxins we ingest in our food and drink and unfortunately many of us consume far too many toxins without realising the strain we are putting on our liver. We all know that alcohol drunk to excess can cause cirrhosis of the liver but even in small amounts it can put the liver under great strain but what else affects it? o Genetically modified foods (GMOs) o Trans fats and hydrogenated oils o High fructose corn syrup o Sodas loaded with chemicals and artificial sweeteners o MSG, a food additive and flavour enhancer found in almost all processed foods o Alcohol, especially if you have liver disease o Drug use o Processed and fast foods devoid of adequate nutrition
Rules for liver lovers: • Drink half your weight in ounces daily in filtered, fluoride-free water • Milk thistle - The active agent in milk thistle is silymarin – an antioxidant that reduces the production of free radicals and can act as a toxin blocker and helps regenerate the liver – take it in supplement form. • Dandelion root – Dandelion has been shown to improve liver function by removing toxins and re-establishing hydration and electrolyte balance you can drink this in the form of roasted dandelion root coffee • Globe artichoke – this herb contains cynarin which is similar to silymarin and this herb stimulates the liver tissue to regenerate. It is also beneficial for the Gall Bladder. • Beetroot and beetroot leaves are the richest source of betaine, a natural liver detoxifier and bile thinner. • Liquorice root - the extract of liquorice root has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. There are some lovely liquorice teas available now • Organic foods supply nutrients without pesticides and chemicals • Vegetables such as broccoli and cabbage increase liver enzymes to flush carcinogens and stimulate bile • Healthy fats such as olive, coconut and flax seed oils protect against gallstones • Garlic and onions activate liver enzymes flushing toxins • Dark chocolate -- 85 % cocoa or better -- provides antioxidant protection against cirrhosis • Avocados and walnuts provide glutathione to cleanse toxins
o Soy-based foods, unless fermented
• Apples are high in pectin removing toxins from the digestive tract, protecting the liver
o Medicines that can overload the liver causing long-term damage.
• Two tablespoons of lemon juice daily with water alkalizes the blood and detoxifies Signs of a stressed out Liver
So what can you do to avoid those hangovers (the liver struggling to cope with the overload) and ensure that you remain healthy over the festive period?
Bad skin – the skin is a major organ of the body and the first place to show if your liver is under great stress.
The remedies and advice suggested in this article are the personal opinion of the author. Please also inform your GP if you are planning to take any natural remedies and you are already on long term prescribed drugs.

health & beauty Sweating a lot at night. Lack of energy – your liver is an important powerhouse for the body and if it is stressed you will feel tired. Reactions to fatty and processed foods – you will find you get more stomach upsets and often pain near the right hand side of the rib cage. Yoga to stimulate the liver and de-stress you Hot Yoga is all about the detoxifying powers of Far Infra Red Head FAR infrared heat, which provides a therapeutic, deep penetrating, detoxifying form of heat which expels toxins, heavy metals and pollutants from the body, providing significant benefits. The twisting postures in yoga are fantastic for the whole of the digestive system and are very detoxifying, what they also do is increase your energy levels and de-stress you. If you are feeling wound up by the whole “x word” then spiral yourself into this lovely twist and as you uncoil yourself watch your mind unwind as well. Sit on the floor with your legs straight out in front of you, buttocks supported on a folded blanket. Bend your knees, put your feet on the floor, and then slide your left foot under your right leg to the outside of your right hip. Lay the outside of the left leg on the floor. Step the right foot over the left leg and stand it on the floor outside your left hip. The right knee will point directly up at the ceiling.

Exhale and twist toward the inside of the right thigh. Press the right hand against the floor just behind your right buttock, and set your left upper arm on the outside of your right thigh near the knee. Pull your front torso and inner right thigh snugly together. Press the inner right foot very actively into the floor, release the right groin, and lengthen the front torso. Lean the upper torso back slightly, against the shoulder blades, and continue to lengthen the tailbone into the floor. You can turn your head in one of two directions: Continue the twist of the torso by turning it to the right; or counter the twist of the torso by turning it left and looking over the left shoulder at the right foot. With every inhalation lift a little more through the sternum, pushing the fingers against the floor to help. Twist a little more with every exhalation. Be sure to distribute the twist evenly throughout the entire length of the spine; don’t concentrate it in the lower back. Stay for 30 seconds to 1 minute, then release with an exhalation, return to the starting position, and repeat to the left for the same length of time. Welcome to the 19th hole, a place for golf tips, reviews and everything golf related.
Welcome back to the 19th hole, we are now in the lead up to Christmas and I hope you are all still finding time in the now shorter days to get out and enjoy a round of golf. As last month’s tip of practicing in your winter clothes now becomes the norm, I am sure there will be some of you adding new winter clothing and accessories to your list to Santa.
So here are my BEST FIVE stocking fillers for the golfers in your family this Christmas. WINTER MITTS Great to keep the hands warm between shots so that the cold weather doesn’t start costing you shots. BOBBLE HATS You lose most of our body heat through your head, so why not make a fashion statement with a great looking bobble hat on course this winter. SNOODS Normally a skiing item of clothing, however these are great items to keep you warm and still allow you to move freely and swing as normal. HAND WARMERS These are great to just have in your pockets on cold days, or even better place them inside your new winter mitts to keep your hands extra warm. SHOE BAGS After a round of golf at this time of year the last thing you want to do is put muddy golf shoes in your new clean car, the golf shoes bags allows you to keep the car clean.
Coaches Tip - SET UP FOR SUCCESS This month’s coach’s tip will insure that you’re in a great position at set up to give yourself the best chance to hit straighter and longer tee shots. I am often asked…. “Do I make the same swing with driver as I did with my iron” the simple answer is YES! The set up however with driver is very different, and it’s this set up that we are going to look at this month. By preparing yourself better to hit driver it will free you up to make your natural swing using this club. Using the driver you need to be hitting the golf ball with an upward swing and be presenting the loft of the driver to the back of the golf ball. This now means in set up we need to set up behind the golf ball to give you the best chance to do this. If you run through the drill below it will allow you to change your set up and give you the best chance to improve your drives.
Left Image: Position the ball forward in your stance, great guild is in line with the heal of your forward foot. Centre Image: Place your hand on your trial leg, slide your hand down towards the knee. This will tilt your body behind the ball at set up, and return your right hand to grip. Right Image: Now make your normal swing and see the set up change your ball flight.
Winter Golf Offers At this time of year club competitions slow down, limited tee times or even some course closures. So why not take this time to explore other local courses on some great deals on the winter months. Often courses with advertise deals that include food as well as golf and will be at a rate greatly reduced from that at which you would pay during peak times of the year. Most of all it allows you to play a different course and enjoy a day playing golf on a course you wouldn’t normally play on a weekly basis. Why not ask your club about offers or visit www.club-noticeboard.co.uk and search local clubs web site for great deals. If you’re struggling with your golf game then please feel free to contact me for any coaching advice or to book a lesson.

Mini Turkey & Cranberry Pies
Bacon and Cheddar Stuffed Mushrooms
Prep: 20 mins // Cook: 25 mins // Makes: 8
Prep: 15 mins // Cook: 15 mins // Makes: 8
Ingredients
Ingredients
500g pack shortcrust pastry
3 slices streaky bacon
plain flour, for dusting
8 crimini mushrooms
250g/9oz shredded leftover turkey
1 tablespoon butter
8 tbsp double cream or crème fraîche
1 tablespoon chopped onion
8 tsp cranberry sauce
90g (3 oz) grated Cheddar cheese
1 egg, beaten
Method Roll out the pastry on a floured surface so that it’s just thinner than a £1 coin. Cut out 8 x 10cm circles using a pastry cutter or small saucer, then cut 8 x 9cm circles for the lids – you may need to re-roll the trimmings. Push the larger circles into 8 holes of a muffin tin, then divide the turkey, cream and cranberry sauce between them. Season well and brush the edges with a little egg. Place a lid on top of each and pinch the sides together to seal. Chill for 15-20 mins. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Brush the tops with more egg, then bake for 25 mins until the pastry is crisp and golden. Serve warm, or leave to cool and enjoy cold.
Method Grill or place bacon in a large, deep frying pan. Cook over medium high heat until evenly brown. Remove, dice and set aside. Preheat oven to 200 C / Gas mark 6. Remove mushroom stems. Set aside caps. Chop the stems. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Slowly cook and stir the chopped stems and onion until the onion is soft. Remove from heat. In a medium bowl, stir together the mushroom stem mixture, bacon and two thirds of the Cheddar. Mix well and scoop the mixture into the mushroom caps. Bake in the preheated oven 15 minutes, or until the cheese has melted. Remove the mushrooms from the oven, and sprinkle with the remaining cheese.

‘MEAT’ THE BUTCHER
SAM MOONEY
by Gemma Procter
W
ith Christmas fast approaching it’s time to turn our attention to the big event. Christmas dinner! If, like me, you like to buy local and know exactly where your meat and game comes from, then you’ll love Country Farm Meats in Great Barton. I drove over to meet owner and butcher, Sam Mooney, who took over Country Farm Meats a couple of years ago, although the actual business has been running for over 12 years. Sam told me that they pride themselves on the fact that all their produce generally comes from a 15 mile radius of the shop, with beef and
28

game from Euston Estate, chickens from Haughley and pork from Crossways Farm which is literally next door (and you can’t get more local than that!). The bacon is cured on site and Sam makes all the sausages himself. As well as a huge selection of meats and game, Sam also stocks local honey, Stokes sauces, free range eggs, handmade curry kits and delicious ready to bake pies. Looking round the shop I was really impressed at some of the deals available, like their ‘Meat for the Week’ pack which includes mince, braising beef, sausages, streaky bacon, chicken breast, pork steak and a roasting joint, all for just £28! What a great idea!
Country Farm Meats is very accessible with lots of free parking, and it’s really easy to find too, just go left at the crossroads in Great Barton by The Bunbury Arms. When I drove over, I can honestly say it took me less than 5 minutes from Moreton Hall. I think it would take longer to get into town and get parked! Independent shops like Country Farm Meats are what makes Bury St Edmunds so special, so let’s support them as much as possible! And in case you’re wondering, last order dates for turkeys is 17th December, and Sam’s shop is open right up until Christmas Eve.

DIRECTORS GO BACK TO THE FLOOR AS APPRENTICES Four directors from Abbeycroft Leisure and Anglia Community Leisure went ‘back to the floor’ in an ‘Apprentice’ style contest to raise money for BBC Children in Need. They raised £1,227.75 in total by using their business skills to raise money whilst working in busy areas of the leisure centres they manage.
Pictured: Finance Director Lynda Pope (right) who worked on reception at Bury St Edmunds Leisure Centre to raise money for Children in Need pictured here with Receptionist Jennifer Saggers (left).
The winner was decided by Abbeycroft’s Chairman and Suffolk Chamber of Commerce President Sarah Howard who looked at three areas - how they performed, how they applied their business skills in their strategy for raising money and how much money they raised. The winner added up to Finance Director Lynda Pope who raised £587.10 by organising a grand raffle for which she worked with her team to contact local businesses to obtain prizes along with selling tickets on and off site at nearby West Suffolk House. She also decorated the reception area, gave out sweets to customers who donated, dressed as Pudsey the Bear and encouraged the reception team to dress up as well, and collected donations from class participants. Lynda said: “I had a fantastic time working on reception and in and around the centre and working with people I don’t normally meet. It was great to meet more of our customers too. “The team were wonderful and everyone really mucked in and worked hard to raise as much money as possible. Everyone dressed up too – well done to all the team and thank you Carl and Christian. Lauren Riding has also been amazing in getting prizes, raffle tickets for free and being Pudsey’s assistant.”

TO RAISE MORE THAN £1,000 FOR CHILDREN IN NEED Sarah Howard said she was impressed with all the ‘apprentices’ but that Lynda stood out for her as the overall winner. She said: “All four of the team showed creativeness and willingness to do what was needed to complete their tasks. Warren gets kudos for pain and humiliation. - leg wax, custard, pencil skirt although he’s not too good on the tannoy. Alison completed all her jobs to a very high standard and made some fantastic soup. But the prize has to go to Lynda who raised double the cash of the other eapprentices and came up with some great ideas may not like it, but we can’t ignore the fact and even persuaded the good people West Suffolk House that Winter is fast approaching. And nowat is the time to start checking we’re to part with their cash.” ready when it arrives.
Simon’s line manager for the day Catering Manager Caroline Killin said: “Simon whilst on shift mastered the art of coffee making using our traditional machine and steaming the milk, not an easy task, he also made a batch of chocolate chip cookies from scratch which we sold to customers. As to the question of whether he should be ‘hired’ or ‘fired’, maybe. With a bit more training.” Chief Executive Warren Smyth worked on Haverhill Leisure Centre’s Reception on Thursday (nov 13) and raised £285.64 with a straightforward business strategy that involved pure humiliation. along to our retail shop to view range of Warren dressed Come in a Pudsey Bear onesie allourday, played products and discuss your needs. MONTHLY VANDALISM UPDATE
Sadly it’s been a month of broken fences, turned up dog bins, fires in woods and on fields. Underage drinking seems to be rife and the police are cracking down on it. It appears that youngsters from other estates are getting the booze and bringing it to Moreton Hall to meet their friends. The CCTV covers Tesco and the Tesco staff are regularly checking ID’s of people who look too young to buy alcohol, however in some cases older youngsters buy it for the younger ones. One problem we can’t control is stopping them getting drinks from home. The police are very active and when they catch the youngsters they empty the drinks away. Hopefully it will deter them.
COMMUNITY SAFETY This might help with the problem above.
A community Safety Partnership, launched with the aim of reducing crime and the fear of crime, the following is their request: Worried about crime and safety in your area? Got an idea on how to resolve it? Willing to take part in a project to reduce crime and the fear of crime? If you said yes to all of the above then contact the Western Suffolk community Safety Partnership via your local borough councillor. We can offer the community: Expertise and specialist knowledge of community safety issues. Guidance on funding. Support from statutory and voluntary partners. Call now! Full contact details for councillor can be found at: www.stedmundsbury.gov.uk There you have it.

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY
What a wonderful day it was, a nice mild sunshine day. There were over 800 people packed onto Angel hill and it’s surrounds plus another 200 personnel on parade and you have 1,000 the people stood 8 deep as the parade passed by St Marys Church. The Royal Air force band led the procession, also providing the music were the Glenn Morris Pipe band and our very own Sea Cadet band. As the service personnel passed with their medals gleaming in the sunshine the public burst into applause and well deserved. Very poignantly also was the sight of members of the public who lost family during all conflicts from WW1 to date proudly wearing their loved ones medals, our loved ones well remembered. On Tuesday the 11th another remembrance service was held at the war memorial on Angel Hill the service was carried out by the Royal British Legion, about 200 including some schools our own Abbots Green (pictured) were in attendance. Wreaths were laid by Bury St Edmunds Town Council along with the Royal British Legion. Over a four day period services were held, Friday night at the Apex there was a Drum Head service, Saturday service was held in the Abbey Gardens to remember the D Day Landing, The American Bomber Command, The Royal Anglian Regt and the retreat on the Normandy beaches. An emotional weekend but as they said. “For your tomorrow we gave our today”. Words echoed all over the weekend.
With that, until next time take care, be safe, Frank

Moreton Hall’s Monthly Nature Watch by Woodland Ways
Just as relevant today... Richard Jeffries, the Victorian writer on rural life in the second half of the 19th century, wrote many things which are still relevant today. For example, writing about a hill near him, but which could equally apply to walking from the town centre to Natterer’s Wood, he wrote “There was a hill to which I used to resort... The labour of walking to it, all the while gradually ascending seemed to clear my blood of the heaviness accumulated at home. On a warm summer day the slow continued rise required continual effort which carried away the sense of oppression. I came to new trees, meadows; I began to breathe a new air. At every step my heart seemed to obtain a wider horizon of feelings; with every inhalation of rich pure air, a deeper desire. The very light of the sun was whiter and more brilliant here. By the time I reached the summit I had entirely forgotten the petty circumstances and
the annoyance of existence. I felt myself, myself” Health advice has still not changed since he wrote “It’s indoors, sir, as kills half the people; being indoors three parts of the day, and next to that taking too much drink and vittals”. Jeffries, like Woodland Ways today, advised against tidying the wildlife out of woodlands “Do not clear away the fallen branches and brown leaves, sweeping the plantation as if it were the floor of a ballroom, for it is the tangle and the wildness that brings the birds, and they like the disarray”. He also saw our place in nature “All nature is absolutely indifferent to us, and except to us human life is of no more value than grass”, reminding us that we have no right to destroy nature.
Woodland Ways is now on Twitter @NatterersWood

Christ Church Moreton Hall
As we approach Christmas, there is so much to do and so many human needs around us, as well as all the infuriating adverts, that it is easy to become exasperated. So that Christmas is spoilt long before it has happened. The Christmas story of Joseph and Mary arriving in Bethlehem is both tragic and wonderful. It was tragic, because the Holy Family were rejected by so many. They went without and were probably hungry as they lay in the cattle shed waiting for the baby to come. But it is also wonderful because all heaven celebrated, the shepherds stood in wonder, and the kings brought marvellous gifts after thousands of miles of travel, and as we all know, the history of the world was changed. We are still surrounded by need in our world today. I want to thank everybody for working so hard gathering gifts and packing boxes and then coming together on 23rd November. It is challenging to remember how many children who will not have a Christmas gift unless they get a shoebox. Well done to you all and thank you. It is great to see the community coming together in such a way. Once again we have launched our Foodbank appeal. It is ironic at a time of plenty that there will be queues at the food-bank. Therefore it is very pleasing to see with what enthusiasm people on Moreton Hall are filling shopping bags full of food to help other people this Christmastime. But we must also celebrate and therefore we look forward with joy towards our Community Choir concert on 6th December and our Christingle Service on 7th December at 10.30 a.m. followed by a Carol Concert with the Bury St. Edmunds Concert Band and Sebert Singers at 4.00 p.m. We also have our special Nativity Service on 21st December and Nine Lessons and Carols by candlelight at 6.30 pm that same evening. Then, of course, there is Christmas Eve with Crib Services at 2.30 p.m. and 4.00 p.m. and Midnight Communion. We all meet

again on Christmas Day at 10.30 a.m. to bring presents to show one another and share together on this most special day. The best way of remembering Christmas and entering fully into the Christmas spirit is, to help somebody if you can. It is more always more blessed to give than to receive and that is what the coming of Christ is about. On the other hand do not forget to receive. God has come for you and as we celebrate His coming we need to remember he loves us, cares for us, believes in us and wants to be the best friend we will ever have. If you want to know more of Him, come and celebrate with us. We wish you all a very happy and blessed Christmas time. With all the joy and love only Jesus can bring With every good wish, Yours sincerely, Reverand Canon Jonathan Ford. Minister A Service of

They like everything bigger and better in Texas – but when it came to building a new opera house, little old Bury St Edmunds caught their eye. The challenge in Houston, Texas, came after Rice University decided to build a 600 seat auditorium, complete with multiple tiers and a horse shoe design around the audience chamber. They appointed New York based architects Diller Scofidio & Renfro – but in the United States, there are very few if any opera houses of this size and design. So where could they visit to see a 21st century music venue offering the very best in acoustic design? “The Apex will offer a lovely example of this form realised in modern terms,” said Robin Glosemeyer Petrone, senior consultant at Threshold Acoustics LLC, which worked on the acoustic design at The Apex. On Sunday (16), she was among 15 staff, consultants and contractors associated with the project at Rice University visiting The Apex to see it in action. The fact finding American tour is also due to visit seven venues across the UK and Europe including the Estates Theatre in Prague and L’Opéra of the Palace of Versailles in France. Cllr Sarah Stamp, St Edmundsbury Borough Council Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Heritage, said: “The fine reputation that The Apex has for its acoustic excellence certainly gets around. “We often receive compliments from both visitors and performers who have been to The Apex, and were aware that we had a growing reputation across the UK. “It is great to hear that that reputation is now international, having reached across the Atlantic Ocean. Threshold Acoustics LLC worked on the amazing acoustic design at The Apex and so naturally want to show the representatives on behalf of Rice University what can be achieved. “This is proof again that Bury is punching above its weight culturally. “We have built a modern day venue to be proud of here in the heart of Bury, and I look forward to hearing how that is replicated elsewhere.”

Glasswells Scoop Two Top Retail Awards
Glasswells, the region’s largest independent home department store, has been recognised within the industry by winning two Retailer of the Year awards this summer. The first award came from the trade magazine Interiors Monthly, whose readers voted Glasswells as Best Furniture Retailer with three or more stores. The second award, Member of the Year, was judged and presented by the Associated Independent Stores (AIS), the largest independent non-food buying group of its kind in the UK and Ireland, and is highly acclaimed amongst other independent retailers. It is the fifth time the family company have won an AIS award within the last seven years, competing against some 300 other retailers ranging from single high street shops to flagship department stores across the UK, Ireland and the Channel Islands. The criteria for the award was highly detailed, with each supplier of AIS voting on various aspects of Glasswells’ business; from the professionalism and product knowledge of staff, customer service and quality of displays through to the efficiency of the accounts and buying departments, warehousing operation and overall perception and shopping experience provided to customers.

With large home department stores in Bury St. Edmunds and Ipswich offering furniture and accessories for every room in your home, and smaller stores in Haverhill and Saffron Walden, winning these industry awards places Glasswells at the top of the list of UK wide independent retailers. It also proves that the company’s ongoing commitment to offering a huge range of quality products at great value with the highest level of customer service is working in their favour to set them apart from the competition. Paul Glasswell, Managing Director comments, “We’re over the moon to have been voted best retailer by two such influential organisations within our trade. The various suppliers that voted for us visit hundreds of retailers across the country and clearly they consider that the job we do is a very professional, efficient and good one. Our staff continue to set very high standards in the way that we go about our business and it is gratifying to know that all the very hard efforts we make to ensure Glasswells is a premier retailer are being recognised.”

A Christmas event with all the bells & whistles and so much more… Hidden within the mature trees of Rougham Estate, just outside Bury St Edmunds, is historic Blackthorpe Barn. During November and December the beautiful Barn turns into a festive wonder as it becomes the place to visit to make your Christmas truly special. Christmas begins at Blackthorpe Barn and each year the event just keeps delivering more festive delight and igniting more Christmas spirit. The rustic medieval barn becomes home to some amazing festive delights. A Country Christmas Shop absolutely teeming with Christmas decorations, traditional games, Christmas lights, gifts and so much more. Plus, a craft event like no other, showcasing the skills, talents and unique wares of the best quality British Crafts people in the country. Also available are the famous Rougham Estate Christmas Trees renowned for their quality and longevity. Not to mention our breath-taking Santa’s Grotto which is destined to deliver even more delights and surprises this year. The Country Christmas Shop opens every day from 1st November until 22nd December, offering a glorious range of essential festive treats from traditional and

sparkling baubles, candles and ornaments, fabulous decorative displays and wondrous delights to the most amazing handmade creations. Nothing brings on the Christmas spirit quite like making a few of your own Christmas favours or even surprising a friend or loved one with a small lovingly handmade keepsake. That’s why the new ‘Make’ and ‘Bake’ Sections are so special. As you browse through the ‘Make’ section you will see a vast array of colour felts, papers, glitter card, stamps, garland and pom-pom making kits - in fact everything you could possibly need to make your own special and totally unique Christmas. Whilst the ‘Bake’ section can really help to awaken your taste buds as you imagine the tasty treats you can make with the patterned cookie and dough cutters, lovely cake decorations and fantastic utensils. The focus on British Crafts
begins at the barn on Saturday 15th November and continues each weekend until 14th December. During this time the Barn plays host to over sixty stalls showcasing pure British talent offering the very best of British handmade crafts. Visitors can chat to the crafts makers themselves about their beautiful products and how they are made. The unique difference with crafts at Blackthorpe Barn is the strict criteria the stall holders have to meet, each exhibitor has to be the actual craft maker themselves and they are chosen to ensure that the entire event displays
high quality items in addition to an eclectic mix of creativity from sculpture and ceramics to leather items, textiles, art and jewellery. Many of the crafts people change each weekend, so there is something new to see each time you visit. Be quick to choose a famous Rougham Estate Christmas tree. Available from 29th November they are nurtured just metres from the Barn. Highly popular they are renowned for their beautiful forms and colours, luxurious shapes and those unmistakable scents. Choose from pot grown or freshly cut, compact and elegant or excitingly large and extravagant, each tree is totally unique. Mistletoe, holly and handmade wreaths are also available. For a well-earned break from all the festivities the café at the barn has been expanded to seat over 120 people, so even more people can enjoy the delicious snacks, freshly baked cakes and refreshments from warming hot chocolate to relaxing mulled wine.
To ignite the excitement for the children Santa’s grotto has even more surprises this year. As well as the anticipation of meeting Santa himself all visitors will be transported to a magical winter wonderland. Tickets are only available online from www. blackthorpebarn.com. George Agnew, owner of Blackthorpe Barn and Rougham Estate adds, “Christmas at Blackthorpe is a wonderful time. A huge amount of hard work and effort goes into transforming our beautiful Barn into a Christmas wonderland and after 23 years we still love and enjoy every minute. We aim to make the barn the place to visit for everything Christmassy and ensure there is something for everyone. That’s why we do everything we can to make every moment at the barn a special one. Whether you’re just popping in to pick up some festive essentials and some new decorative gifts for loved ones, or bringing the entire family for a festive day out, there really is something for everyone.”
Find out more… Blackthorpe Barn is just on the outskirts of Rougham, off the A14 at junction 45 (Sat Nav IP30 9HZ). For more information and opening times for the various events see

Embracing Winter by Andrew Southwood It’s taken a while to arrive, but I do believe winter is finally here. The unusually warm autumn was welcomed by most, me included. But now, with festivities rushing towards us at an alarming speed, I am ready to embrace a great British winter in all its glory. Whilst sorting out some of the more random things I collect in the garage (bags of old toilet rolls, boxes of empty jam jars, bucket full of bottle tops… you know – just in case!?), I made a mental note as to the location of the sledge and snow shovel. The latter being a master piece of over engineered GCSE standard wood work, lovingly crafted by my own hand, with patent pending. Whilst the other is a shamelessly inane moulded plastic object, which should be embarrassed to call its self a ‘sledge’. Both are primed and ready for action. All we need now is some proper winter weather. Not just the cold starts and frozen drizzle on the car. I’m talking about real snow, like we used to get… back in the day. Blimey, I sound old
54
The Moreton Hall Directory
don’t I? Thing is, if you’re going to get cold and wet, you may well do it properly. Test out the novelty woolly hat and poundland gloves to the max. A white Christmas would be romantic and idealistic in many ways, but a huge logistical nightmare in many others. Pre arranged visits and family gatherings are hard to organise at the best of times, throw 6 inches of snow into the mix and they become frankly unworkable. That said, once everyone is safe and sound where they should be then, as someone we don’t know once wrote, ‘let it snow’. Of course this, in all likelihood, is completely irrelevant. As the seasons continue to gradually morph and change, snow, especially in December,
is increasingly rare. It’s also interesting to note that by the time you sit down to your compulsory soggy sprout and well earned glass of something nice, the evenings will be drawing out again. Light at the end of the tunnel, so to speak. No sooner has winter begun, than it begins to drift away. In the meantime, try to keep on top of it all, and enjoy and embrace the festivities. Be sure to fulfil your own personal Christmas traditions and treasure every moment, as before you know it, it will be gone. Oh, and I have it on good authority that Father Christmas’s refreshment of choice this year is a pint of Adnams, paired with a generously filled warm mince pie.

Pauls Jobs for the Month l Now’s the time to prune fruit trees. Always use a sharp pair of secateurs, loppers and a pruning saw Start by removing crossing, rubbing, weak, dead, diseased, damaged and dying branches. Keep the centre of the tree open by removing larger branches with a sharp pruning saw. l Clean patios & paths of moss and algae. There are 3 main ways of tidying up a patio. Either by use of a herbicide, a power washer or by use of a wire brush. Perhaps the best if you are thinking of the environment is the latter method. With a bit of elbow grease, the moss growing between your patio bricks can be removed with a wire brush fairly easily as it doesn’t have a root system. l Prune bush roses back by about half to stop them being damaged by winds l It’s a good time to cleanup your garden pots on the patio. Pests such as slugs and snails like to shelter in pots especially where there are old plant remains from dead leaves. l If you have a wisteria you will know that it can grow like crazy. If you want to encourage better flowering next year give the side shoots a good back to around 3 cm. l Work off a few pounds before the Christmas festivities by digging over any bare plots of your garden. If you are lucky enough to have plenty of garden compost then dig this into your plot.

THE
OF
MON TH – Cyclamen l If it is sufficiently dry then give your hoe on the go to control any emerging weeds. l Now is a good time to plant new crowns of rhubarb. If you have an existing crown lots of thin stems would indicate that it is losing vigour and needs to be divided . Each crown can often be split with a spade into several new plants by ensuring each piece has a good bud. l Don’t throw away your kitchen fruit and vegetable waste. Instead dig and fill a runner bean trench. For the very best runner beans dig a trench around 2 ft deep and a foot wide and dispose of your all your vegetable peelings in here. When the trench has a good layer of vegetable waste cover it up with soil. Runner beans planted here next year will benefit from all of the moisture from the waste which will have broken down by then.
If you want a little colour in the garden or as a potted plant indoors then an old favourite to consider is the cyclamen. Outdoor hardy species and cultivars are ideal for naturalising under trees, on banks or in a shady border. Flowers vary from pale to deep pink and provide pretty ground coverage for the winter garden. Do not plant cyclamen tubers to deeply or they may fail to flower. Now is a good time to plant before the ground is frozen. Little annual care is required though they all benefit from a mulch of leaf mould and some grit.

This week the children in Year One at Abbots Green have been learning about World War Two and considering what life would have been like during that time. In particular the children have thought about what it would be like to be a child during the war and have found out all about evacuees. As Lewie explained, “the children were evacuated and went to the countryside.” The children also learned about the identity cards the children would have worn. Toby added “The children wore an identity card when they were being evacuated by steam train.” Landon said he really enjoyed making his own identity card. Oliver said: “We looked at a suitcase evacuees might have taken with them.” The children discussed the different objects inside and the reasons why they would have been packed. “The children had to have gas masks so they didn’t breath in the smoke” explained William. The children then designed their own suitcases considering what items they would each pack if they had have been alive during World War Two. Hubi thought that “the children might have taken marbles in their suitcase to play with.” This work was undertaken as part of this term’s whole school project “I am a small part of the world.”

They now have a stern new headmistress (Celia Imrie). Mr. Shepherd (Martin Clunes) has also joined the school but unfortunately he’s just lost his memory in a bizarre mishap. This has made him forget the promise he made his daughter - he had vowed to give her a new mum by marrying his fiancee, Sophie (Catherine Tate), in New York on Christmas Eve. Just as importantly, he can’t remember the whereabouts of beloved Archie the donkey! Now it’s up to the rambunctious kids and zany Mr. Poppy (Marc Wootton) to save the day. THE INBETWEENERS 2 15
DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES 12A
Release Date: 1st December 2014
Release Date: 24th November 2014
Starring: Simon Bird, Joe Thomas, James Buckley, Blake Harrison
Starring: Andy Serkis, Gary Oldman, Judy Greer, Jason Clarke, Kari Russell, Kodi Smit-McFee
Will, Jay, Neil and Simon return in a hilarious sequel to the raunchy hit comedy.
Man and apes embark on a spectacular collision course in the thrilling sequel to ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’. Ten years have passed since apes and men went their separate ways after the battle of the Golden Gate Bridge. Mankind has been all but wiped out by the simian flu. Caesar (Andy Serkis), meanwhile, leads an evolving, peaceful ape society in the depths of San Francisco’s Muir Woods. When a band of human survivors stumble across the ape village, Malcolm (Jason Clarke) and Ellie (Keri Russell) are eager to promote peace between these former enemies. But they reckon without hot-headed survivalist Dreyfus (Gary Oldman), who leads an army of soldiers and is hell-bent on revenge! ‘Cloverfield’ director Matt Reeves takes over for this electrifying sequel, which The Guardian describes as ‘spectacular and sophisticated’ and The Mirror calls ‘a classy, exciting genre film that packs in drama, twists and spectacular action’.
Last time we met the Rudge Park posse, they were causing chaos in Malia, Crete. Nearly a year on, Will (Simon Bird), Jay (James Buckley), Neil (Blake Harrison) and Simon (Joe Thomas) have gone their separate ways. Jay is staying with his uncle in Australia. Neil has actually managed to get a job. And Simon and Will are at different universities, but life isn’t panning out as they’d hoped. So when Jay emails to say he’s now become the biggest DJ in Australia and his life is one long party, the threesome need no encouragement to leap on a plane for a wild Easter break. Creators Damon Beesley and Iain Morris take over as co-directors of this eagerly anticipated sequel to the most successful British comedy of all time. Expect outback mayhem and big laughs!

Engine damage means that plucky Dusty Crophopper (Dane Cook) may never race again. But he gets a second chance at heroism when he joins an elite squad of firefighting aircraft. Their task is to protect the historic, wildfire-prone Piston Peak National Park. The team is led by tough-as-oldboots veteran fire-and-rescue helicopter Blade Ranger (Ed Harris). He’s initially sceptical about taking on the rookie. But perky air tanker Dipper (Julie Bowen) has a crush on Dusty, and he quickly bonds with the rest of the colourful gang. Their ranks include wise American Indian heavy-lift helicopter Windlifter (Wes Studi), jolly ex-military transport plane Cabbie (Dale Dye), and a quintet of fearless all-terrain vehicles known as The Smokejumpers. When a raging wildfire tests them to the limit, Dusty learns a big lesson about being a hero.

In addition to the Country Christmas Shop, each weekend from 16th November until 15th December, the Barn is brimming with talent as it turns into a British Crafts spectacular; the very best of British handmade crafts, showcasing the country’s most gifted crafts people. With over sixty stalls, visitors can chat to the makers and gain an insight into their inspiration and passion for what they do. Each craft has been especially chosen for the event to ensure quality and an eclectic mix of creativity from sculpture and ceramics to leather items, textiles, art and jewellery. Many crafts people change each weekend, so there is something new to see each time you visit. Outside, the charm continues with a truly wonderful Santa’s grotto. Tickets to see Santa are only available from www.blackthorpebarn.com. Famous Rougham Estate Christmas trees, mistletoe, holly, handmade wreaths and garlands are also available from the Barn.
Eleveden 2 This is a well worth a visit in the December shopping period, especially if you have young children. With human sized elves and Santa's grotto, there's fun for all the family. Not only that, but they also have live reindeers for the kids to pet, and husky dogs dressed up in Christmas costume. With a small donation, the huskies are happy to take your newly bought Christmas tree to your car on one of their sledges. There is a coffee shop and restaurant, along with gift shops and stalls, so we recommend a visit to Eleveden where you'll be pleasantly surprised by how much fun you'll all have! Perfect Presents go under the hammer!
Christmas shoppers will be given the chance to bid for perfect presents while supporting West Suffolk Hospital during a special online charity auction taking place next month. The second West Suffolk Hospital Charity Christmas Auction will give people the chance to bid for a host of money-can’t-buy experiences and gifts, thanks to the generosity of local individuals and businesses. Among the lots on offer is a rare Beatles photo – entitled ‘Things to Come’ taken by renowned photographer Tom Murray, from his ‘Mad Day – Summer of 68’ collection. Tom offered the framed photo, one of only 19 ever reproduced, in memory of friend Jackie Kovacs who died in 2014 and was supported by Ward G1 at the Hospital. All of the money raised from his auction item will go to supporting the ward. Other items under the virtual hammer will include the chance to fly a plane or having singer-songwriter Cody Pennington sing in your own living room. A Christmas hamper from Sainsbury’s in Bury St Edmunds and a unique garden accessory, courtesy of Out of Our Tree, will also go under the virtual hammer, while other prizes have been donated by RAF Lakenheath, Greene King and Beano artist Barrie Appleby, who will be offering the chance for someone to star in their own comic picture. Individuals or businesses who would like to support the auction by donating a prize can still do so by contacting the hospital’s fundraising team. Anyone who donates an item will be able to choose the exact area of the hospital they would like to support, with the Forget-Me-Not Dementia Campaign, Rainbow Ward, Antenatal Department and Macmillan Unit all benefiting from the event. Dave Gooderham, fundraising manager at West Suffolk Hospital Charity, said: “The local community has once again come up trumps in offering some fantastic auction items. The fundraising team has worked hard to ensure there is something for everyone, giving people the chance to bag some fantastic Christmas presents while also supporting their local hospital.” The auction will be run on the hospital charity’s eBay site between Thursday 4 and Sunday 14 December. Organisers are hoping to beat the total from last year’s event, which raised £5,600 for the neonatal unit.
More information is available from the charity’s website on www.wsh.nhs.uk/charity or by calling the fundraising team on 01284 712952.

The moreton hall community centre news Hello all, welcome to the December Issue of the Moreton Hall Directory! As ever it comes round so fast, we hope you’re on the way to getting ready for Christmas at your house or business! On Friday 5th December we have 2-4-1 on all of our bar menu (excluding steaks and ribs) from 12-7pm! Perfect way to get a delicious, freshly cooked meal for a bargain at the end of a hard day at work, or a cost effective way to treat the family. Our menu can be viewed online at www. moretonhallcommunitycentre.co.uk. On Sunday December 21st we have our Kid’s Christmas Party from 2-4pm! We’ve heard that Santa himself will be taking time out of his busy schedule to see children from the Moreton Hall this year, and will perhaps have a few goodies to give out too! If you want to sign up your child, then please see a member of bar staff who will put your kid’s name down – there is a lunch included, please choose between sausage and chips and chicken nuggets and chips when booking! It’s free for members, and £2.50 for non-members, but all are certainly welcome! After the madness of the Children’s Christmas Party we will be doing our Christmas Draw, where all of those squares that you’ve been buying with a view to won lots and lots of Christmas goodies will be drawn to determine the winners! Prizes include a flat screen TV, tablet, and lots of boozey and chocolatey items to see you through your sweet cravings well into the New Year! 50p a square, and they’re available on the bar now! Membership of the club for 2015 is available from 1st December! You have the option of a couple/ family membership for the year, a single membership, or if you are over 65 we operate free memberships! A membership to the club will give you a 13.5% discount on all drinks at the bar (a pint of Fosters is £3.30 to a non-member, for a member it is £2.85), a 10% reduction in hall hire for any events you hold at the centre, and access to a members bar with excellent facilities. Well worth it. Something that will make it even more worthwhile is a promotion on New Year’s Day, which is a buy one get one free! This applies to all people who have joined the club as members between 1st December and on New Year’s Eve! If you look at it as a “hair of the dog” approach given the festivities occurring on New Year’s Eve, I’m sure we can help you get the
most of the promotion! New Year’s Eve tickets are selling fast! They are available at the bar and for members cost £6.50 for adults and £2.50 for children, and for nonmembers they are £13.00 for adults and £5 for children. Buy yours as soon as you can because they are limited and on a first come first serve basis! We have Lee from Sonic Sounds bringing in the New Year as per usual, but we will also have the Tricky Twister entertaining the kids and providing us with some close up magic during the evening as well! Our opening hours for the Club change slightly over the Christmas Period – on Christmas Eve we’re open from 12pm till late (with food from 3-6pm), and Christmas Day we have our usual Chairman’s drink between 12-2pm. On Boxing Day we’re open from 12-8pm, on New Year’s Eve we open from 12-5pm, shut to set up for the evening festivities, and then reopen at 7:30pm! On New Year’s Day again we open from 12-8pm. If you want to book a good value and versatile event space for your function, please don’t hesitate to give us a ring on 01284 763402. Events we have helped cater and prepare for include a Burns Night, an Italian themed night, weddings, engagement parties, wakes, anniversaries – we can help to make your event a spectacular one! And of course, if you are a member of the club we can discount these costs more and ensure that you get the best value for money. We’ve got lots planned for 2015 and beyond, including fundraising nights, quizzes, darts tournaments, live music, themed nights (and of course bingo!) and are always open for suggestions so you can see what you want happening at your community centre. So from all of us, a very merry Christmas and Happy New Year! We hope Santa brings you all your Christmas list, and we will most definitely look forward to seeing you at the centre in 2015! See you all soon!
