hello...
Directory Moreton Hall
…and welcome to the December edition of the Moreton Hall Directory. We hope you are all getting into the spirit of Christmas! Some people love the hustle and bustle of the shops at this time of year. The Christmas songs playing in the background; the men waiting patiently outside the shops, trying to keep the kids from causing chaos, whilst us mum’s are trying to decide whether Auntie Mary would like socks or pants from us this year!
Gemma Procter Editor halldirectory.com gemma@moreton
For once, I’m hoping to have most of my Christmas shopping all wrapped up (quite literally) in really good time this year, to save any last minute running around Christmas Eve; I so hate fighting people for the last gift set in Boots!
Sally Walters Contributor sally@gemm awalters.co .uk
If you really want to get into the spirit of things, turn to page 40, yes its true! Christmas jumpers have made a comeback! So grab one each for all the family to wear whilst you sit around the table pulling crackers and eating turkey, I must say, I am very tempted. Watch this space... So many parties to go to and not enough hours in the day? See page 60 to find out how to keep looking good when really all you want to do is curl up and keep warm. From us all at the MHD, we wish you a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. See you next year!

There has been a lot of media coverage of ash die-back disease in recent weeks, but how has it affected us? Ash is one of the commonest trees in Moreton Hall, in many of the old and young woods, including several hundred planted over the last decade at Natterer’s Wood. So far, no signs of ash die-back have been reported although no-one has done a full survey. The magnificent ash in Pond Covert close to the Woodland ways compound looks very healthy. The signs are the leaves quickly dying and going brown as if they’ve been sprayed with herbicide rather than the typical autumn yellowing, together with lesions on the twigs. All trees are under constant fungal attack, but it seems that a new strain of the fungal disease has evolved, together perhaps with climate-induced stress on our trees.
Its thought that the disease might spread by windblown fungal spores, so Government advice to clean your boots, pushchair wheels, dog etc every time you leave a wood seems inefffective. Most woods where the disease is recorded are in south-east England, from Norfolk down to Kent, suggesting that it blew in from Europe. In some countries, most ash trees have died and if that occurs here, our woods will have lots of gaps in them as dead trees are felled for safety reasons. Woods will recover, though, with other species regenerating or being planted where there is light to grow. We might see more oak or field maple being grown, or more hazel bushes. We will monitor our woods and decide if we need to replant Natterer’s Wood or our other woods in the short or medium term.

Christ Church Moreton Hall This Christmas time the cinemas should be dominated by a wonderfully comic film, Danger in the Manger with David Tennant, the former Dr. Who. It should be precisely the sort of fun family film we can all go to and enjoy. It, of course, resonates with the hundreds of thousands of Nativity and Crib Services which go on round the country at this time of year. Both in schools and churches, whole communities come together to enjoy themselves with this wonderful story. If you pause and think for a moment, this is one of the few stories in which everybody in this land does participate. Culturally the story does not belong to the church but it belongs to everyone and it is good to celebrate it. As we do so many happy memories, some of them quite funny, come to all our hearts.
This joy and love stands in marked contrast to much pain and suffering in our world. The ongoing problems of Gaza, the rapid approach of great world famine and, of course, the bitter disappointment of the vote in General Synod, show us that there is much hardness of heart and plain wickedness in the world. It is not for nothing that King Herod has a prominent part in the story of Jesus. There will always be people who fear new kings, new ways of doing things and who also fear the power of love, forgiveness and reconciliation for those qualities are actually far stronger than armies, bullets, guns and the hatred that lurks from time to time in all our hearts. If Jesus came to teach us anything, it is that perfect love casts out all fear.

So this Christmas time I would ask you once again to take a few moments to look at your heart, to ask yourself “What am I afraid of?” “What causes me to be resentful, fearful, angry and even perhaps revengeful?” The great wonder of the Christ-child is not just that He came to heal, to help and to teach, to die and to rise again, but He came to change human hearts. He came to change your heart. The greatest Christmas present you can receive is Him. If you offer Him your heart, no matter how battered, bruised or spoilt it is, in a moment He can transform it into something beautiful, warm and loving, as beautiful in fact as a well told Nativity Story with all the family gathered round the crib. If you take time this Christmas you can put aside your doubts, fears and disappointments and turn again into

Howards 1 Bury Bowl FC 2 Bury Bowl travelled to Northumberland Avenue to play Howards for the second time in the league, Howards started the better and went 1-0 up early on through a Michael ‘Birdie’ Hinton goal, after some slack marking at a corner. Bowl then played some good football but were just lacking the final ball, Howards chances were kept to a minimum with Manning and Chandler well marshalled and Bowls were all in the form of set pieces particularly free kicks which seemed more worthy of a rugby pitch than a football pitch! In the second half Lee Cable came on for the injured Ben Stanford who again had a magnet for sliding tackles for some reason, and immediately Cable put himself about. Bowl were starting to dominate possession and when Howards did break they were foiled by the amazing Alan Brafield who made two massive saves from one on one situations. As the game wore on it looked like not being Bowl’s day, the knackered out Jarboui being replaced by Sim Low after a hard shift. Five minutes left on the clock and Ash Macdonald swung the ball in, Cable with all the poise of Thierry Henry in the Ireland v France game was at the back post to turn it into the path of Chris Hemingway who poked home for 1-1. Minutes later and another Macdonald cross found Low who flicked it into Gardiners path, he was clattered by the keeper who knocked the ball out, only to fall to Ben Atkinson who swept home for his first Bowl goal for 2-1 and the winner! Bowl stayed firm for the final two minutes for another hard earned 3 points to go top of the league. Everyone played superbly today 110% just what we needed after a difficult patch everyone playing for each other and working hard! Holidays are coming ... by Andrew Southwood
T
he other day, I was taking advantage of some glorious November sunshine, giving the grass it’s belated final cut of the year (it was more like a lush hay meadow than a lawn), drifting away in my own thoughts, imagining it was spring, dreaming of the summer months ahead. When I popped inside, I found we had received our first Christmas card. My springtime bubble was burst and I was suddenly brought back down to earth with a wintery bump. Despite this premature card, at the time of writing, Christmas in our house is still being kept well and truly under wraps. We are more than happy to embrace it fully nearer the time, but the thought of our 2 & 4 year old kids running around for the next 6 weeks singing jingle bells and pulling at the decorations,

is not something we plan on encouraging. As in many houses, behind the scenes my wife and I are hard at work, making lists, researching various gift ideas, and desperately trying to remember where we squirreled away those bargain presents we picked up at Woolpit carboot in the summer. By mid December I’m confident we’ll be sorted and can start to enjoy some relatively stress free festive cheer, after all we’re all big kids at heart. Our son, who is far too logically minded for his own good, has already started with the endless questions regarding the finer details of the logistical challenges faced by delivering presents on a sleigh. This year he is really getting down to the nuts and bolts of it, like the problems with entering a chimneyless house without
a key, how Santa’s related to Father Christmas and frankly he’s just not too sure where the flying reindeer fit into all this. I have to agree, it’s a tricky one to explain with hard scientific proofs, but then not everything in life is like that. Despite our sons doubts, we have it on good authority that Father Christmas is planning on dropping by with a present or two. In fact we’re hoping to have a word with him, as to be honest our kids have far too much stuff already! Perhaps we can strike a deal with him. The less he leaves the more mince pies and port we’ll leave out for him? One thing is for sure – come Christmas morning they’ll be two very excited kids and two very tired adults expectantly creeping down stairs to see if anyone has been to visit and more importantly, see if they have left anything behind!

Whats been happening at...
Abbots Green Community Primary School This week we held our ‘In House Project Day’ for the term. This is a special day where all the children at Abbots Green work within their colour teams, rather than with their class groups. We therefore have mixed age groups working together on fun and educational activities linked to our current project. As our project this term is “Hubble, Bubble, Toil and Trouble” the children were invited to come into school for the day dressed as wizard, witches and scientists. The Suffolk Education and Business Partnership supported the school by sending us two of their ambassadors to help with our activities. The children had chance to experiment with yeast,
make leek and potato ‘Hubble Bubble’ soup, build moon buggies out of K-Nex kits and learn all about static electricity. Following the activities William in Buttercup Class said “Wow – that was really super!” and Thomas said “I loved tasting my soup!” Thomas wasn’t alone as the children queued up to try another batch of the soup later in the week. The staff at Abbots Green also sampled some too – it really was delicious!

CHRISTMAS SPIRIT November, a month tinged with festivities and sadness. A month when we look back with sadness on 11/11 and remember those who gave their lives in all world conflicts, leaving behind wives, husbands, brothers and sisters and not forgetting children, spare a thought for them. On the other hand, the shops are full of goodies to tempt the
money from your purses for those Christmas gifts. My wife and I are blessed with having a wonderful family all of whom live very close to us so we always have someone dropping in or we visit them. But there are those who’s families are spread all over the world and can’t be with them for Christmas. Should you know anyone who might be
alone this Christmas, give them a call to see if they need a bit of shopping or just to say hello. For those who live alone there is an organisation which provides a wonderful Christmas lunch and good company at St. Benedict’s School, it’s free and they can provide transport to and from the school. You can contact them on 01284 754967. You don’t have to be alone.

RESPONSIBILITY
Again, I have had many emails on responsibility for them. This regarding disputes over land highlights other issues regarding ownership on the estate, Wren who should be doing what, the Close has been in situate for borough are only responsible for many years, however the maintenance once the developer Close was never adopted. I has satisfied the council that they had an email regarding repairs have complied with regulations to lighting. Having contacted under section 38. This covers Suffolk County Council, they trees, hedges, grass verges and informed me that the developers pocket parks. were responsible, however, Roads are covered by highways the developers have gone bust which is county. I hope this helps so County have agreed to take people to understand.
TRAVELLERS My phone has been ringing off the hook over our unexpected travellers on the estate, in the main they park on the industrial areas. The responsibility for removing them lies with the developers, the only involvement the Council have is for the welfare of the children which
they have to do by law. This family have moved three times in a month from Skyliner Way to Ram Meadow then on to behind the bus station in St Andrews Street and at the time of writing this, they are back on the estate behind Jewson and the Renault garage. They may have, by now, moved away.
SECURITY I have to put this in, a friend of mine has been employed by St Edmundsbury borough to go around the houses and encourage people to sign up to postal voting. He told me of several houses he encountered where the car was parked outside and the house and car keys were still in the door, what an easy catch for thieves, not only a chance to rob the house but a car to get away. Please be careful especially at this time of the year when some people are looking for any chance to rob you. Until next time take care, and have a wonderful Christmas Frank themhd

Special services to pay tribute to lost loved ones A POIGNANT service of remembrance will be held in Bury St Edmunds in the run-up to the festive season. The annual Bury Light up a Life service on Sunday, 9 December, will combine a church service with a moving ceremony on Angel Hill, where the names of loved ones lost will be read out. Last year’s touching event saw hundreds of people take part in the procession and hear from people whose lives have been touched by the Hospice. The event will start at St Mary’s Church at 6pm, with a Songs of Praise service including prayers, readings, hymns and interviews with Hospice staff and volunteers. Following the service there will be an eye-catching candlelit procession from St Mary’s Church to Angel Hill for the Light up a Life ceremony, at 7.30pm. Anyone wanting to take part will be offered a candle to carry from the church as well as have the names of loved ones read out by Hospice staff, volunteers and supporters. Hospice Chaplain Charles Amoah said: “The Light up a Life events are always a very special part of our calendar – it is something we want the whole community to come and share in. “They allow people to pay their own special tributes to loved ones passed, regardless of whether they have been touched by hospice care or not. “The Christmas season evokes a lot of memories we shared with our loved ones who are no longer with us. We gather to pray, share memories and reflect and remember those we have lost.” There is no charge for the Light up a Life event but donations to the Hospice are welcome. COMMUNITY POLICE
NEWSLETTER Members of the Bury East West Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) are urging residents to secure their home this winter in a bid to ensure that thieves are not given any presents this Christmas or New Year. With Christmas fast approaching many homes will be full of valuable gifts. Leaving your home unlocked, all in darkness and with valuables on view under the tree could mean an easy target for criminals. The Bury East West SNT are issuing their top 10 tips to beat the burglar and keep all your gifts safe. These simple precautions may be enough to significantly reduce the chances of your home being targeted. Winter often means an increase in burglaries as this gives criminals the cover of darkness and as most of us put lights on as soon as we get in, it’s can be easy for them to identify properties where there is no one at home. Victims of burglary sometimes make it easier still for the burglar with doors open, keys about, presents all in one place, bags left out to put it all in, car on drive ready to drive away. Therefore we are encouraging all residents to follow our tips and not give burglars an easy ride. We are also asking residents to keep an eye on your neighbours homes. Burglars wander around looking for chances. Our best opportunity of catching them in the act is for you to spot them before they break in. Wherever you live keep an eye out for strangers and please call 999 immediately if you see something unusual. This could be someone hanging around outside a property, someone carrying unboxed electrical goods or unusual items, such as heavy bags or pillowcases, or clambering over fences, etc. We would rather be called by a dozen people and find it is a false alarm than not be called at all. If you hear about stolen property being offered or sold please tell us. One day it may be your property they’re trying to sell and under those circumstances you’d appreciate someone else giving us a call. These are our top 10 tips to help prevent burglary: 1. Prevent access to rear of property (eg high lockable gates-walls, fences). 2. Fit British-standard five-lever Mortise locks (or UPVC equivalent) to all external doors.
3. Fit (and use) locks to all ground-floor windows and remove keys from locks. 4. Rear garden fencing/walls should be approximately 6ft, preferably with additional topping (eg trellis or plastic strips with conical points to make climbing difficult). Homeowners should pay particular attention to fences and walls that adjoin alleyways, footpaths or open land. 5. Reduce cash kept in the house to a minimum and ensure good quality jewellery is not left in jewellery boxes or dressing tables. 6. Security mark (with house number and postcode) desirable items (eg flatscreen televisions, laptops, mobile telephones and games consoles) and record details and photograph for reference in the event of theft. 7. Fit additional padlocks and hasps on garage doorsensure no tools left out and garages and sheds locked. 8. Do not hide spare keys unsecured outside properties. 9. Use timer plugs to give the impression property is inhabited when empty. 10. Consider fitting a burglar alarm as a back up. For more information about safeguarding your home and property you can contact your local police crime reduction officer on 101 or visit www.suffolk.police.uk. Gardening Tips by Paul Clarke What to do in your garden in December It is very tempting in December to stay indoors beside a warm fire and give the garden a miss. After all daylight hours are short the weather can often be wet and windy and there is lots of shopping to do! However if you manage to find just a little time in your garden then I would suggest it can be beneficial to both your health and spirit. Gardening can give you a free workout to burn off a few calories and give you some peace and quiet. So try to find some time in your garden even if it is just to feed the birds.
“That’s no December sky! Surely ‘tis June Holds now her state on high Queen of the noon. Only the tree-tops bare Crowning the hill, Clear-cut in perfect air, Warn us that still Winter, the aged chief, Mighty in power, Exiles the tender leaf, Exiles the flower.”

Pauls Jobs for the M
l Now’s the time to prune apples, pears, quinces and medlars. Always use a sharp pair of secateurs, loppers and a pruning saw Start by removing crossing, rubbing, weak, dead, diseased, damaged and dying branches. Keep the centre of the tree open by removing larger branches with a sharp pruning saw. Reduce the height and spread of any branches that have grown too large by cutting them back to a vigorous lower branch. l Clean patios & paths of moss and algae. There are 3 main ways of tidying up a patio. Either by use of a herbicide, a power washer or by use of a wire brush. Perhaps the best if you are thinking of the environment is the latter method. With a bit of elbow grease, the moss growing between your patio bricks can be removed with a wire brush fairly easily as it doesn’t have a root system. l Plants in containers should be moved to a more sheltered part of the garden and for your more precious plants wrap the pots with fleece or bubble wrap.

Welcome to Gardening Tips a monthly feature providing you with hints and ideas of what to do each month in your garden. Along with a list of jobs that will enable you to enjoy and maintain your garden I will also feature a plant of the month. I have been a gardener for many years and run a small business called Pauls Garden Services.
l Continue to collect fallen leaves particularly from off your lawn. If you have a lot I prefer to collect up by running over with a mower with the blades set at the highest levels. l December is a good time to dig over your borders and vegetable beds. However choose a good day as you will do more harm than good if it is too wet or the ground is frozen. If you can get some well rotted manure then dig this into your trenches. l Prune bush roses back by about half to stop them being damaged by winds l Clear away annual climbers such as sweet peas l Continue to deadhead winter pansies and violas to encourage more flowers l December is the start of the bare root planting season. Nursery orders for fruit trees will start to be delivered during this month If you have made orders from a nursery then these can be planted as soon as they are delivered as long as the ground isn’t frozen or particularly waterlogged.

The big Christmas Jumper comeback THEY used to be something knitted by granny which would be quickly resigned to the back of the wardrobe. But now the dreaded Christmas jumper is making a comeback. Online retailer Amazon has reported a huge 600% increase in sales of festive knits compared to last year, and shops are also doing a roaring trade in them. Celebrities, fashion experts and high street shoppers have all been spotted wearing jumpers adorned with festive symbols.

ury St Edmunds-based band is to bring Steampunk music to its hometown for the first time.
Metropolis, formed in 2011, are playing The Pot Black Sports Bar on Dec 8th (7.30pm), following recent successes in Birmingham and Leicester. Supporting them are popular local band The Last Drop and DJ Sivy. “Steampunk is a massive new phenomenon currently sweeping the world and we are right at the heart of the movement,” said vocalist Chris Longman “It’s certainly more Steam than Punk”. “Steampunk is Victorian retro-futurism, originally born out of a love of the 19th century sci-fi novels of HG Wells and Jules Verne. The literature, fashion and design are already becoming familiar to us all - it only leaves Metropolis to deliver the music.” Pete Alexander, of Bury St Edmunds, formed the band with talented musicians Chris Longman (vocals, Bury), Colin White (guitar, Bury), Dan Alexander (drums, from Bury), and Johnny Boreham (keys, of Stowmarket). Influenced by Gary Numan, Hawkwind, Muse and Joy Division, Metropolis have already enjoyed great live success and online popularity, with fans spanning the globe. “We have been so well received, we really can’t believe it. We are now being played on radio stations across the UK and USA, and have been approached to play the Glastonbudget festival in May next year.” Their first CD Just Killing Time, recorded at Bury’s Shrubbery Studios, is available on iTunes and Amazon, whilst the video for their single “My Metropolis” is proving very popular on YouTube. Recipe of the month
CHRISTMAS Vegetarian Roast This easy vegetarian recipe for Christmas roast is nutfree. Lots of very finely diced veg and mushrooms are baked in a loaf tin with cheesy breadcrumbs on top, to make a moist veggie roast with a crunchy topping for those who would rather not have turkey. Serves: 6 Prep: 1 hour 30 minutes Cook: 1 hour 30 minutes
Ingredients
Method
3 tbsp olive oil
1. If you are making veggie gravy, keep all the trimmings from the vegetables. Preheat the oven to 180째C/fan 160째C/gas 4. Heat the oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Add the pepper, leek, carrot, onion and celery and cook, stirring, for 8-10 minutes. Add the mushrooms and cook for 5 minutes; if they produce lots of juices, cook them out. Transfer to a large bowl.
1 green pepper, very finely chopped 1 leek, very finely chopped 1 carrot, very finely chopped 1 onion, very finely chopped 1 celery stick, very finely chopped 300g field mushrooms, very finely diced 1 large egg, lightly beaten 200g mature Cheddar, grated 110g dried breadcrumbs

2. Fold in the egg, 150g of the cheese and 100g of the breadcrumbs. Mix well and season. Transfer to a greased, base lined 28.5cm x 13cm x 6cm deep loaf tin. Sprinkle with the remaining cheese and breadcrumbs. 3. Bake for 50 minutes to 1 hour, until set and the top is golden. Cool in the tin for 5 minutes, then turn out, slice and serve with gravy.
To freeze: Bake the roast and cool in the tin. Turn out, wrap in foil and freeze for up to 1 month. Defrost in the fridge overnight and reheat in the oven at 190째C/fan 170째C/gas 5 for 45 minutes, until piping hot throughout.

We are rapidly approaching the Festive period and here at the Moreton Hall Club we are busy finalising our Christmas and New Year’s Eve events. But what of the month just gone? Well, the Children’s Halloween party was a howling success and a real scream! The early evening was enjoyed by over 50 children, all of whom had made such a wonderful effort with their fancy dress. They enjoyed many party games and took great delight in wrapping their “Mummies”. Their evening was completed with the release of Halloween lanterns. The night was then taken over by the adults with a disco by Phil the Rhythm and it was fangtastic to see so many people dressed up and having a great time. Live music by Michelle & Joe was very well received by members who enjoyed an evening of cover versions covering a wide range of artists. More recently we have held another popular quiz night with a number of teams competing for a cash prizes. Our men’s dart teams are having mixed success in Bury Inter Club Darts League. In the Premier Division the A team are currently joint 1st, the Academy are 6th and the C team joint bottom. The B team are top of Division One. Our ladies B team are currently top of Section One and the A team are middle of Section Two. The Bury Ladies are top of the Super League. Jack Langston has recently joined the team of scorers for the PDC and is now rubbing shoulders with the likes of Kevin Painter (who is playing an exhibition along with Jamie Caven here at the club on Saturday 2 February 2013), Raymond van Barneveld and Phil Taylor. For those of you who have not visited lately we have purchased more new furniture and the room is now looking very smart.
Members who watch football at the club can now benefit from our recently launched loyalty card. Complete a card and then receive a free drink as a thank you for your support. Membership for 2013 is now available. For 2013 we have introduced a free membership as well as a paid membership. Paid membership for people over the age of 18 years costs £6.25 for a single member and £12.50 for a couple or family with children under the age of 18 years. Membership for over 65s remains free of charge and is treated as a paid member. Paid members will receive discounted drinks and other benefits. Membership is available from the bar during opening hours. New Year Eve tickets are now available from the bar during opening hours. Prices are as follows: 2012 Adult member- £5 and children £2.50, Non-members- £10 and children £5. With a disco with Sonic Sounds and a cash raffle it is always a great night to catch up with old friends and make new ones too. During December we have planned a Children’s Christmas party, Member’s Christmas draw and live music with Nick Lowe. The ever popular Ska Souls will be returning and a Christmas Eve disco. For further details see the main advert or contact the club on 01284 763405 or the office on 763402. So much going on over the next few weeks and watch this space for 2013 events! Until next time, best wishes from the Committee.

Nativity 2: Danger In The Manger
Director: Debbie Isitt Starring: David Tennant, Marc Wooton, Pam Ferris, Jason Watkins, Joanna Page, Jessica Hynes The kids of St. Bernadette’s hit the road for a choir contest in this crazy sequel to the festive comedy hit! Overanxious new supply teacher Mr. Peterson (David Tennant) has enough on his plate with his wife (Joanna Page) being pregnant. But the lovably rambunctious kids of St. Bernadette’s primary school sweep him along with enthusiasm as they gear up for another big contest. This time they’re off to Wales for a national choir competition under the banner ‘A Song for Christmas’. Their amphibious tour bus crammed full of angels and shepherds, plus an unaccompanied baby, they hit the road without parental permission! But their arch-rivals from the posh Oakmoor school are taking part too. What’s more, they face new challengers St. Cuthbert’s School - led by Mr. Peterson’s golden boy twin brother! With David Tennant and ‘Gavin and Stacey’ star Joanna Page joining the cast, this is another Christmas comedy treat for all the family.
THE TWILIGHT 12A SAGA: BREAKING DAWN PART 2 Director: Bill Condon Starring: Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Dakota Fanning, Michael Sheen, Mackenzie Foy
It’s finally here: the incredible, eagerly anticipated conclusion of the fabulous Twilight saga! After the dramatic events of part one of ‘Breaking Dawn’, life seems a little calmer for Bella Swann (Kristen Stewart). Successfully transformed into a vampire, she now has the life with Edward (Robert Pattinson) that she always dreamed about. She also has an extraordinary daughter named Renesmee (Mackenzie Foy). But her happiness is to be short lived. The law-enforcing Volturi vampire coven descend upon the town of Forks, concerned that the astonishing, fastgrowing Renesmee might be an outlawed immortal child. As the Cullens gather their supporters, the stage is set for what could turn out to be a full-scale vampire war, with Jacob (Taylor Lautner) and his werewolves also drawn in to the conflict. So how will it end? Author Stephenie Meyer and screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg have come up with a climax that deviates from the original book but promises to be just as powerful.
End Of Watch
15
Director: David Ayer Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Pena, Natalie Martinez, Anna Kendrick Jake Gyllenhaal stars in a blistering, innovative cop-buddy thriller sets in south central Los Angeles. Officer Taylor (Jake Gyllenhaal) and his Latino partner Mike Zavala (Michael Pena) are self-styled ‘ghetto cops’ with the LAPD. Their wise-cracking attitude and macho swagger doesn’t make them popular on the force, but the rule-bending duo certainly get results. Taylor has also taken to videotaping his exploits as part of a project to make a film about his daily work. But the maverick twosome bite off more than they can chew when an accidental discovery leads them to tussle with a ruthless Mexican drug cartel. Writer/ director David Ayer has patrolled the LAPD beat many times in his career with the likes of ‘Training Day’ and ‘Street Kings’. In ‘End of Watch’, he makes extensive use of surveillance footage and cameras wielded by the police themselves. The result is an adrenaline-fuelled thriller of astonishing immediacy.

101 Marketing tips
for your business Brought to you by gemma Procter, creative director at the Pit group Gemma has over 18 years experience in graphic design and marketing – working with some of the leading brands in the country.
H
ere at The PIT Group, we’ve compiled a list of 101 marketing activities for your business. And the list is always growing! These are some of the ideas we consider when working with clients to develop a cohesive marketing strategy.
1 Marketing Plan
Whilst it’s best to keep your marketing plan fairly flexible for any last minute inspiration, it’s also invaluable to plan at least a few months in advance so you know where you are with your budget.
2 Pr calendar
All PR is good PR or so they say! Whilst that might not necessarily be true, PR can be totally free so is well investing some time in. For best results, a PR calendar is vital. Plan when to do your PR effectively and the results will speak for themselves.
3 niche/Positioning
If your service/product is aimed at a niche market, then your marketing efforts will be much simpler to achieve. If not, perhaps you could develop your service/product for a niche market in addition to your existing market?
We like to call it a ‘pick and mix’ list. Of course not every business would need to (or have the time or resources) to do all 101, but as many as you can tick off for your business, the better your chances of succeeding in effectively marketing your business.
4 naMe of coMPany
Does the name of your company sum up what you are offering? It’s never too late to change the name if it’s not working for you. What was once a great name when you started out, may not suit the business 10 years down the line.
5 identity
Your brand identity is crucial for customer loyalty. Make sure all your marketing materials have the same look and feel.
6 logo
It’s tempting to produce a logo yourself, but are you really sending out the right message? A professionally designed logo is a must for most businesses.
7 stationary
Sometimes your stationary may be all a customer see’s from you. Make sure it is doing it’s own marketing job.
Fo m W d
Each month, we’ll bring you some of the activities we’d advise most businesses, large or small, should be looking at. So without further ado, and as Dermot O’Leary would say, “in no particular order” here comes this months tips…
8 Business card
Some might think business cards are old hat… but they are still one of the best bits of marketing material to have. Just make sure you have them on you at all times!
9 signage
Is your signage up to scratch? Particularly for shops with little other marketing, this is quite literally your shop window.
10 staff Buzz
Are your staff motivated and happy within your company? Keeping staff buzzing is an enormous benefit to your business.
11 hours & days of
oPeration Are your opening hours and days compatible with your customers lifestyles? Maybe you could try opening early, late night or trade on a Sunday if it’s appropriate?
Look out for more tips in next month’s issue…

vitality.
Director, The Self Centre
This issue we look at how to have a “stress-free” Christmas! I heard someone on the radio today use the word “stress” as a symptom, in the same sentence as “anxiety” and it made me think about how common place the word “stress” has become in our daily vocabulary and what is its true definition? One definition is “mental, emotional or physical strain or tension” but what really interests me is how one person’s definition of “stress” is another person’s “motivation”. Not dissimilar to visiting a Car Boot Sale and discovering that one person’s junk is another person’s treasure? So if its not a symptom but a “something” that results in mental, emotional or physical strain or tension, what exactly is it?? I don’t think I ever heard my Grandma say she was feeling “stressed”, maybe she would have said, “I’ve got a lot to do today and need to be organised” it is a word that I don’t recall often being used much before the 80 ’s? It seems everywhere we go now someone we know if off work with “stress” or feeling “stressed” about Christmas. But, now I’m not sure that it’s not just my rubbish memory, so I type “ancients view of stress” into Google and I am told that Yoga, Tai Chi, Qi Gong and Meditation (or its modern Western equivalent of Mindfulness) are all methods used to both prevent stress and heal the symptoms of it. So they must have been “stressed” all those thousands of years ago?!
58
themhd
One of the things I notice as a yoga teacher is whereabouts in peoples bodies they carry their stress or tension. For some it can be that their shoulders are stuck up by their ears, they have a stoop and painful lower back, a dodgy knee or an uneven hip. Other symptoms of stress overload can include, headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, heart palpitations… the list is endless. At a talk today by Dame Carol Black who is the governments advisor on health and wellbeing in the workplace she told us of a fascinating study that revealed despite Back Pain being the most common reason for people to take time off their work, when you drilled down into the real reason they were off (not what they had told their GP) it was actually because they were feeling undervalued, un-empowered, unhappy in their job or had personal or money issues. Our wonderful body can cope with many different mental strains or tension, but for some of us, if it is too prolonged then the mental strain starts to manifest itself into a physical symptom. Now this is the time we really have to get to know ourselves! How many of you can actually say that you know yourself physically, mentally and emotionally really well and are constantly aware of your body, mind and breathing all day? So if you could sit here right now as you read this article, and put your hand on your heart and
ask yourself these two questions: 1. What / Who / Why causes me to feel stressed? 2. Where/How does that stress manifest itself in my body? I think if we could as individuals understand the answers to these questions then we can actually know, for us, what we are dealing with and most importantly embark on Question 3 3. How can I change this? There it is, that word again “change” – it’s the most consistent thing in our lives and its how we deal with it that makes us grow and develop every day. So if we can choose how we “react” to the answers in Q1 and Q2 then we will hopefully have a stress-free life, not just Christmas! I mentioned being aware of your body, mind and breath as a pre requisite for understanding how you react to stress, I would also like to add to that, the food and drink you consume! This is sooo much more relevant at Christmas when we tend to indulge in the richer, sweeter treats of life and our sensible alcohol consumption often goes out the window! Here are some things to think about that will help keep stress at bay over the Festive period! • Don’t get caught up in the “must-have madness” – keep your gifts simple, thoughtful and
health&beauty
reasonably priced – go for something home-made like cookies or chutney if cash is tight or maybe offer a day out or tickets to a show for someone you want to spend more time with. • If you are out shopping, make a concerted effort to smile at people, even if they look grumpy and stressed, hold the door open, let them in front of you in the queue – you will be amazed how good it makes you feel and the affect it has on those around you! • Look after your LIVER! For every alcoholic drink you consume, have a glass of water in-between and 200 mg of vitamin C (before bed) and if you know you’ve overdone it then get some milk thistle – a
brilliant herbal remedy for helping rejuvenate the liver! On the day of a party make sure you’ve drunk 3 litres of filtered water during the day to ensure you are well hydrated! • Remember that sweet sugary foods will cause a temporary high rise in your blood sugar and then drop it like a stone to make you feel tired and irritable – don’t overdo them! • Learn how to control your breath to calm you if you feel a stressful situation or a person attempting to emotionally stress you out! Breathing out and counting to 10 really works! Also Download the Free Info sheet on Fabulous Yoga Breathing exercises from our website! • Try and get out in the fresh air
and go for a walk everyday over the festive period; it will rejuvenate your soul and take you away from the madness. If you are stuck at your desk for longer than you want then at least try some Desk Yoga (available on the website too!) to prevent yourself stiffening up or sit on the floor and try this Yoga Twist to stimulate the liver and de-stress you! For further information on new classes starting in January including Beginners Yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi, Qi Gong and Mindfulness Meditation please call the self centre on 01284 769090 or visit www.the-self-centre.co.uk Carole Baker – Director: The Self Centre.
The remedies and advice suggested in this article are the personal opinion of the author. Please also inform your GP if you are planning to take any natural remedies and you are already on long term prescribed drugs. Always consult a qualified Complementary Practitioner, never self medicate. themhd

Stay looking good during the
CHRISTMAS PARTY SEASON n 8 hours a night sleep would be ideal but over the festive period this might not be possible. Sleep studies have shown that for every hour of sleep you miss in one night you should try and make up for it by sleeping for an extra half of what you missed on the following night. If you know you wont be able to get enough sleep but have to look your best the next day, try a replenishing miracle night cream which is like sleep in a bottle for skin!! n After a night of excess partying, sleeping with an extra pillow can help reduce fluid build up round the eyes which causes puffiness and bags. n Splashing cold water on your face will brighten and tighten the skin, making you look more awake. To instantly banish redness from tired eyes, use brightening eye drops for a quick fix. n It is important to always take your make up off before bed, however much you have had to drink as your skin will pay for it a day or two later if you don’t. Even if you don’t manage your usual cleanse, tone and moisturise regime, leave a packet of cleansing wipes beside your bed to quickly sweep away your make up as you pull on your pj’s and fall into bed. n Another reliable tip is to drink the odd glass of water throughout the night’s partying as this will lessen the after effects the next day. Leave a bottle of water beside your bed to drink when you arrive home. Hangover headaches are caused from the cells in the brain being excessively dehydrated. Drink as much water as you can before bed and also when you wake up. Try to avoid coffee the morning after a big night out, despite the temptation, as caffeine is also a diuretic so will dehydrate the body further. Although it may feel like a quick pick-me-up, you will feel worse when the effects wear off. If you absolutely must have a caffeine fix, try green tea instead as it is packed with antioxidants.

n Keep your skin well moisturised. The combination of the cold harsh winter weather and central heated homes can play havoc with our skin. Some extra TLC may be required on dry patches, particularly around the nose and for lips. Also use a gentle skin exfoliator 1-2 times per week to slough away dead skin cells. If you can afford to, treat yourself to a rejuvenating or deep cleansing facial which will give your complexion a boost. Alternatively, use a face mask at home while relaxing in a hot bath to draw out impurities. n Looking good starts from the inside, so take a multivitamin to supplement your diet. n Help your feet recover by wearing flats during the day and try placing Party Feet inside your high heels for a long night dancing. n In the shower preparing for yet another party, turn the temperature to cold for 1 minute before you get out. This will help boost circulation and give you an instant awakening! n Fake it! Fake tan is not just for summer. We might be covered up with a polo neck keeping cosy during the day, but dull, pasty winter skin will not look good in a little party dress. Exfoliate skin regularly, keep well moisturised and apply fake tan once a week. n However much you crave that fry-up the next morning, it will not cure your hangover and will leave you feeling sluggish an hour or so later. Replenish lost nutrients by having some fruit as part of your breakfast or grab a smoothie if you are on the run. n Curling your eyelashes before applying mascara will instantly open up your eyes. Apply a light reflecting concealer under the eyes to fake how awake you really are!
