hello...
Directory Moreton Hall
…and welcome to the February edition of the Moreton Hall Directory. Snow, snow go away!! I made a snowman, I sledged with the kids, got hit with a few snowballs, slipped over a few times and now I am getting bored with it! Bring on Spring!
Gemma Procter Editor halldirectory.com gemma@moreton
As I sit here writing this in our Beyton office, it’s a little chaotic to say the least, with boxes packed, we are on the move… We will be relocated in our new Moreton Hall based office, at Barton Road Retail Park by the time you read this. So feel free to pop in and discuss any advertising requirements. This issue should help out those ‘loved up’ couples, stuck with ideas on what to buy their partner for Valentine’s day, see page 42 where we have a few ideas to help you both out. Our monthly recipe can also be of use if you have decided to dine in (on page 44). But Orissa have their vouchers at hand if you don’t fancy the washing up on your romantic date!
Sally Walters Contributor sally@gemm awalters.co .uk
We have also added a new kids feature on page 12 for our little MHD readers, hopefully it will keep them amused for a good half hour at least. Hope you enjoy this months issue. See you all in March when the daffodils may make an appearance.

Small mammals in winter Winter is a difficult time for the small mammals in Moreton Hall. To maintain their body heat in cold weather they need to increase their metabolic rate, and eat more, but in a season where food can be hard to find. That’s why winter is the season of highest mortality, with those which survive into spring having several months to have large numbers of babies to restore higher numbers by the autumn. Wood mice, which come into garden sheds more frequently in winter, may store seeds and nuts to help keep themselves fed. Bank voles, which live in our woods and hedges, and field voles which live in areas of long grass such as at Natterer’s Wood, may find old berries or natural grass seeds, or may have to graze on old dead grass as a
last resort. When snow lies, voles will tunnel under the snow which insulates them when the temperature drops further and keeps them out of sight of predators. Our shrews do not hibernate, but they do become less active in winter. Remarkably, shrews shrink in winter, so that they require less effort to move and need less food; their liver, brain and skull all shrink. The reduction in small mammals affects predators too. In January, a kestrel obviously had given up hope of catching a small mammal in the nearby countryside and was seen hovering over 10 Acre Field, Symonds Road, looking for a small mammal snack. The death of a small mammal can mean the survival of a larger bird.

Christ Church Moreton Hall As I write this we are in the grip of a very cold winter. While the children may be enjoying themselves, people have been struggling to pay their heating bills, others have been seriously injured and, of course, it has had a huge impact on travel. Wildlife has been severely affected as well. On the other hand, when you compare notes with the great winter of 1963 when the whole of England was covered by heavy snow from the middle of December to the middle of March, and one hundred and ten people died with fuel supplies failing for almost everyone, it reminds me of how lucky we all are these days. The whole reason why Christ Church, Moreton Hall, exists is to serve the community here. For the last few months we have been scratching our heads and listening to God to try to find out what things we ought to be doing to help make the housing estate here into a real community. Our members have made many suggestions some of
which may become a reality on the estate. But we would like to hear what you have to say. Would you please take time to either drop a note through our letterbox or to leave a message on our website and tell us how best the church can serve you? We already have an exercise class and lunch club for older people, choirs, youth club and a range of other activities. We were also very encouraged by the numbers who came to be with us over Christmastime, for which we thank you. However, I am sure there is more we can do, so I would be pleased if you would let us know of any ways you think we can bring our community together. My second thought is that while we keep winter at bay by insulated houses, warm clothes and all the wonders of modern life, there is another winter which we need to be careful of. That is the winter that rages in some of our hearts. Disappointments, betrayals, rejections, illnesses, hurts, can make us very cold people indeed. I am reminded that at the very centre of Dante’s hell there was not a raging
fire, but rather a huge expanse of ice and cold. In Dante’s mind the worst thing of all was to be cold to one another. In the haste of life it is very easy to be indifferent or just plain ignorant of the hurt that is around us. Sometimes we justify our own coldness by hurts done to us in the past. Spring is about the time when everything begins to warm up and starts to bloom. Perhaps that is why Jesus chose for His resurrection to happen then. As we enter in to Lent with the prospect of Easter beyond it, let us open up our hearts and our hands to God so that He may warm them with His love. May He melt out of you all the ice of resentment that lies there so that your new softer, more com passionate heart can be seen. If you want to know more about how this could happen for you, please come and join us on a Sunday morning or evening. With every good wish, Revd. Canon Jonathan Ford.

Whats been happening at...
Abbots Green Community Primary School Our exciting new school project this term is entitled ‘Airfield Road’ and is all about our local area! All the children in the school have been involved in decorating the school to look like the area that they live in. Classrooms have been transformed into houses complete with brickwork, front doors and flowers and across the school street signs, letter boxes and telephone boxes have appeared. The children have even created their own postman! The children in Snowdrop Class (Year 1) were keen to get out to explore Airfield Road and to find out more about their neighbourhood. Armed with cameras the children went out on a local trip to look at the buildings, signs and other features, taking photographs of anything that interested them along the way! Oliver noticed the 20mph sign outside the school and said “This means that the cars cannot drive faster than 20.” Charlotte was busy looking at the collection times on
the post box and Skye explained to the class that “this is where the people post their letters.” The children then returned to class to use the photographs along with their own drawings to create maps of Airfield Road and to learn the history of the area. Freddie has already learnt that “before our school was built Airfield Road used to be an old airfield.” All the children in Snowdrop Class are really excited about our new project and the children are enjoying sharing information about where they live with their class. We would be very keen to hear any interesting information about the Moreton Hall area from local residents. This could include the history of the area, old photos of the area or stories about how the area has changed since it was first developed. Please contact Nicola Hubbard at the school on 01284 718818 or via email at nicolahubbard@ abbotsgreen.co.uk with any information which you would like to share.

I
t’s fair to say that, back in November, there was a considerable amount of mocking as I emerged from the garage with my latest contraption. It was definitely functional. It was, I would argue, made with great skill and care. It was perhaps only beautiful to me, it’s creator. However, my bespoke super snow scoop was undoubtedly a proud addition to the family. As expected, it stood unused at the back of the garage for weeks. So, I think I was probably more excited than my children when the snow finally came. At last – an opportunity to put my handcrafted, over engineered, custom made clearance device to use. I should take a moment to explain where I took my inspiration from. Last winter I
18

saw someone down the road clearing the road with a house ‘for sale’ sign, with what can only be described as astonishing efficiency. So, the seed was sewn and my ‘plywood on a stick’ design was born. Maybe at 4 feet wide and a foot deep, this ‘shovel’ took more bolts and screws to construct than the Forth Bridge.
“if a jobs worth doing…”. So, with my young assistant in tow, and the eldest successfully delivered to school, we collected grit from the subtly coloured bright yellow plastic bin down the road. I established fairly quickly that the fine art of grit spreading was not my toddlers forte, but hey, we can’t all be good at everything.
But it was all worth while. It cleared the drive, path and road in 5 minutes flat! I was tempted to continue right down the Close, but I used great self control and restricted my clearance to the immediate vicinity, for fear of becoming so immersed in the satisfying nature of the job, that I would look up and suddenly find myself halfway to Stowmarket.
Finally we retreated to the warmth of the house. Wet wellies stuffed with newspaper. Soggy gloves on the radiators. We looked with pride out of the window at our mornings work. Grit castles aside, it was a valiant effort even if I do say so myself. Sure, by lunchtime the next day all the roads were clear regardless, but that’s hardly the point is it. Ours was the first, and no one can take that away from us!
Of course, as all the best Council workers will tell you,

This update has been supplied by the Football Project Manager Mr Howard Cook. The Football Association and Bury Town Football Club, together with St Edmunds Borough Council have worked hard to bring a state of the art Football Arena to Moreton Hall.
TELEPHONE SCAMS I have been notified about two phone scams now going round, the first is regarding advertising in a PCSO publication, you will get a call from a person offering advertising space in the magazine, do not take up their offer, they are not genuine but a scam. Challenge them and they get aggressive and rude. Get their details if you can and inform the police. This notice comes from Police Direct. The second is a delivery scam. You will get an email from Fed Express stating that they tried to deliver a parcel to your address but there was no one home, you are requested to call to your local office after you have downloaded a receipt. Don’t download it will cost you a lot of money and there was never a parcel. There are other cons going around so be careful, if you not sure check first, better safe than broke.
The scheme will consist of a Green Match pitch, Club House, car parking, an all weather pitch and three small pitches for use by the football teams on the estate. This is a great opportunity for everyone and a lot of money is being put into this venture, hopefully building should start soon, fingers crossed.
GRIT BINS The grit bins on the estate are provided by the town council and are filled by the county council, although the bins are placed in various closes, they are for use by everyone in the whole location. The council are asking for people to come forward who are willing to be grit spreaders, these people would then be covered by the council insurance. As many of you have noticed during the cold snap, these bins have been a god send. If you can help, contact the town council on 01284 725111. I would like to thank the council staff who have kept our roads clear and our rubbish bins empty during the snow and ice. Good job everyone!
SPRING LITTER PICK I would like to arrange a spring litter pick, the date I have in mind is mid March. Hopefully it will involve the whole estate. I would like groups to come from all areas. We will meet in the youth club, where you can collect black bags and high visibility jackets together with litter picks. This would be a good opportunity to clean up the estate before spring sets in. This is your chance to clean up. Those interested please contact me so that I know numbers and can order the equipment.
YOUTH CLUB Once again, a plea for helpers. We have lost two helpers due to work commitments and house move, so if there is anyone out there who can give us one night a month, please ring me on 07818455472. The club is going strong and we have lots of new equipment, a large screen TV and we hope to have a movie night once a month, so come along and get involved. Help us keep your children safe. Until next time, take care. Frank

COMMUNITY POLICE
NEWSLETTER Members of the Bury East West Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) are urging Moreton Hall residents to be extra vigilant regarding any suspicious activity observed close to any of our many schools located on the estate. Unfortunately there has been a spate of burglaries where schools in mainly rural areas have been targetted and laptop computers stolen within. Rougham Primary School in Church Road, Rougham was broken into sometime between 21 December 2012 and 2 January 2013. A secure cabinet within the school housing 15 Dell laptops was broken into and the laptops stolen. Police would like to hear from anyone who was in the area and saw any suspicious activity. They would also like to hear from anyone who knows the whereabouts of the laptops or who has been offered one for sale. Calls should be made to PC Steph Rose at Bury St Edmunds Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Police are appealing for information after laptops worth £8000 were stolen from a school in Aylmer Close, Risby. Some time between 5.30pm and 9.15pm on Saturday 12 January, offenders forced entry to the school. Once inside, they forced open a cabinet and stole 16 Dell laptop computers. Anyone who may know who took the computers, or who has any information in relation to the incident is asked to call PC 1251 Simon Collins at Ixworth Police Station on 101. Any suspicious activity seen in the vicinity of Sebert Wood, Abbots Green Primary Schools, Moreton Hall Prep School, Priory School and Tassel Road Day Nursery and Preschool should be reported to Police immediately by calling 101.
• Do not give out your personal, credit card or online account details over the phone unless you made the call and the phone number came from a trusted source. • If you receive a phone call from someone you don’t know, always ask for the name of the person you are speaking to and who they represent. Verify this information by calling the company’s head office yourself. • Do not reply to unsolicited texts, e.g. texts referring to accident claims even to get them stopped. Simply delete them. • It is best not to respond to missed calls that come from numbers you do not recognise. Be especially wary of phone numbers you do not know. They may charge you higher rates if you answer them and can turn out to be very expensive. To help reduce marketing calls, sign up to the Telephone Preference Service. The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) is a free service. It is the official central opt out register on which you can record your preference not to receive unsolicited sales or marketing calls. It is a legal requirement that all organisations (including charities, voluntary organisations and political parties) do not make such calls to numbers registered on the TPS unless they have your consent to do so. http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/number_type.html Many Thanks for your continued support

It’s that time of year once again…no we’re not talking about Christmas we’re talking about the biggest news in thebestof calendar –
14 Days of Love! Time to Show some Love for Bury Businesses A major campaign to help promote local businesses has just been launched with a Valentines theme. Named the “14 Days of Love,” the campaign run by the Best of Bury St Edmunds, encourages local people to ‘show some love’ by writing testimonials in support of their favourite local businesses. It is the fourth year in a row that the campaign has been run by ‘theBest of’ and on a local level this is to prove to local businesses that we care and want to show it by saying something positive to support local tradesmen and women in tough economic conditions. As an incentive to encourage local people to write testimonials a prize draw is being run with those taking part having the chance to win fantastic prizes including an Orient Express Experience, Romantic Dinner for 2 in a Michelin starred restaurant, a Ferrari driving experience and many more.. The local people leaving the most testimonials will become the ‘Best Local Lovers!’. All testimonials posted on the pink themed Best of Bury website up until 14th February will be added to the site’s Love-O-Meter, which will ultimately decide who the ‘Most Loved’ businesses are, both locally and nationally. Last year’s campaign revealed Fronting the campaign are Best of Bury team Miriam Watson and Michele Bailey who are keen not only to hear about the most loved businesses, but for people to post quirky videos about them on the website. In February 2012 several local businesses did fantastically well. Did you see the fabulous testimonial wall in Javelin’s window? They won national recognition for this. Most loved business in Bury was Moreton Hall’s very own Stephen John’s Hair and Beauty Salon with hundreds of local testimonials. Said Miriam ‘We are so passionate about this campaign because we can’t simply rely on the Government to support Bury businesses. The fact is, this is our community and it’s up to us to make a difference. One of the ways we can do that is by showing some real ‘love’ for local businesses this February’. For further information about the ‘14 Days of Love’ campaign and to leave a testimonial go to www.thebestof.co.uk/burystedmunds or contact Miriam Watson on 07732 669077 or Michele Bailey on 07807 982746. themhd

Gardening Tips by Paul Clarke What to do in your garden in February The Anglo Saxons called February “Sol-monath” (cake month) because cakes were offered to the gods during this month. A slice of cake and a cup of tea are very welcome in the potting shed when gardening so let’s keep this February tradition going! February the 9th is East Anglia Potato day. So if you are thinking of growing potatoes this year it might be worth going out to an event at Stonham Barns. On this morning you will have up to 100 varieties of seed potatoes to buy and an opportunity to taste and swap seed potatoes. You can buy individual tubers so there is an opportunity to try varieties you wouldn’t normally see in garden centres.
Pauls Jobs for the Month l This is your last chance to plant barerooted raspberries. Prune the canes of summer-fruiting types to 10in after planting, and autumn-fruiting varieties down to ground level.
l Clear weeds and mulch around the base of fruit trees. l Check outdoor containers are regularly watered, particularly those sheltered by house porches or eaves. l Clear leaves from around snowdrops so you can see their flowers emerging. l Put up bird nesting boxes this month - it’s the last chance before tits start looking for a suitable residence. l Finish off winter digging tidying up beds and borders. Clear dead tops and branches from plants. l Dress beds with bone meal
l Tidy up and deadhead your winter flowering pansies. l Cut back ivy on walls on walls and fences it will look much better for a tidy up and it best to do early before any birds begin nesting. l You can sow early varieties of broad beans, parsnips, peas shallots, spinach cabbage and turnip. Only do this if the weather conditions are mild and you have prepared the soil. Remember you can warm up a section of earth by putting down some black polythene . l If you have rhubarb it is time to force it. This simple process provides an earlier harvest of sweeter stems that don’t need peeling. Cover plants with a container or large pot to exclude the light. Place the cover over the rhubarb as soon as it begins to show signs of growth.
l Plant lily of the valley crowns.

TAPENADE LAMB
with butter bean mash
Serves: 4 Prep: 10 minutes Cook: 35 minutes
Lamb is fabulous but doesn’t have to be expensive, as this easy recipe with a tapenade marinade shows. Ingredients
Method
2 tsp tapenade (olive paste)
1. Mix the tapenade, capers and olive oil together in a small bowl. Brush the marinade over the lamb chops and set aside to marinate.
1 tbsp capers, finely chopped 1 tbsp olive oil 4 lamb shoulder chops (we used ASDA Smartprice) 3 x 410g cans butter beans, drained and rinsed 600ml vegetable stock, hot 2 garlic cloves Mixed peppercorns, crushed, to serve (optional)
2. Put the butter beans, stock and garlic into a saucepan. Bring to the boil and simmer for 15 minutes. Whizz using a hand blender or mash really well, until smooth. Season to taste and keep warm. 3. Heat a griddle pan until hot. Add the chops and cook for 5-8 minutes, turning, until cooked to your liking. 4. Spoon the butter bean mash on 4 plates, season with crushed mixed peppercorns, if you like, and place a lamb chop on top. Serve with steamed green beans on the side. Tip: Dried butter beans are a cheaper option - just soak them in water overnight before cooking. If you can’t get hold of shoulder chops you can use loin or chump chops but they are more expensive. And if you have open jars of Indian or Thai curry paste, brush onto chops for an instant marinade.
A glass of red should wash this down nicely. The fruity Spanish grape variety Tempranillo would be a great buy.

Django Unchained
Director: Quentin Tarantino Starring: Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington, Samuel L. Jackson Django is out to save his wife from a brutal plantation owner in the latest genre mash-up from director Quentin Tarantino. Django (Jamie Foxx) is a slave in America’s Deep South, whose wife Broomhilda (Kerry Washington) has been sold to ruthless plantation owner Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio). Rescued from his violent owners the Speck Brothers by bounty hunter Dr King Schultz (Christoph Waltz), Django is made an offer. Schultz agrees to help Django free his wife from the Candyland plantation if he will lead Schultz to a ruthless gang of killers known as the Brittle Brothers. Schultz aims to capture the brothers, dead or alive, and needs Django’s help. In return, Django will also be granted his freedom. Expect mayhem and dark humour aplenty in Quentin Tarantino’s new movie - complete with his usual roster of idiosyncratic characters, snappy dialogue and jaw-dropping violence.
A ground-breaking film adaptation of the global hit stage musical, with an all-star cast singing their parts live. After serving a long prison sentence for a petty crime, Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) becomes a noble force for good. But he reckons without Inspector Javert (Russell Crowe), the policeman who pursues him obsessively for breaking his parole. Set against the tumultuous backdrop of French revolutionary history, Victor Hugo’s classic 1862 novel has been adapted for stage and screen many times. But no version is better loved than the stage musical, which continues to break records in its 27th year. In bringing this powerful story of broken dreams and unrequited love to the screen, ‘The King’s Speech’ director Tom Hooper decided to have the performers sing live rather than miming to a recording. The result is a spectacular musical epic of extraordinary immediacy. Its superlative cast also includes Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen.

LINCOLN

Director: Steven Spielberg Starring: Daniel Day Lewis, Sally Field, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tommy Lee Jones President Abraham Lincoln (Daniel Day Lewis) battles to abolish slavery in the United States in Steven Spielberg’s drama. January 1865: Lincoln is attempting to get the 13th Amendment passed in the United States House of Representatives. The amendment will formally abolish slavery in the United States. Spanning the last four months of Lincoln’s life, Steven Spielberg’s sweeping new film examines the political struggles faced by Lincoln as he tried to get the amendment passed, whilst in the background the horrific carnage of the Civil War drew to a bloody close. Daniel Day Lewis disappears into the role with his characteristic intensity and intelligence, bringing to life one of the most iconic figures in American political history, whilst a strong supporting cast includes Sally Field as Lincoln’s wife, Mary Todd, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as his son, Robert, and Tommy Lee Jones as Republican Thaddeus Stevens. Examining both the personal and political sides of Lincoln’s personality, Spielberg’s film sheds new light on this legendary figure.

Hello everybody and welcome to February! Where has the time gone since we last wrote? So what’s been happening and what’s planned ahead at the club? Let’s just catch up with the Christmas festivities. Live music with Ska Souls proved to be as popular as ever, with the dance floor filling up at the first cord played by the group. The Christmas Eve disco was extremely busy and this laid the foundation for New Year’s Eve, which has been reported by many to have been the best for many years. With a great mix of ages, the evening started off with music for the younger ones. You know it is going to be a great night when 30 people start dancing to “Gangnam Style” and know all the actions followed later by the chairman leading “Sandstorm”. The pinnacle of the evening was the draw, which set new standards of audience participation with the PDC darts theme music ringing out through the hall with 250 people cheering at the top of their voices in between prizes being drawn. Oh and then the many tales of hangovers and accidents! January is normally a quiet month as people recover. However the club has been really busy as the new membership year starts. Our membership is increasing and we are pleased to welcome many new members and their families. The committee will work hard to provide entertainment to suit the various ages that use the club. Phil the Rhythm’s legendary movie quiz was a massive success. It was extremely well supported and was worthy of an Oscar itself. A variety of clips and questions had many people guessing and the winning team won £100 cash! The next quiz night will be 9th March with a theme yet to be decided. Again we will provide a meal at minimal cost. Please pre-book to avoid disappointment. So, what else is coming up…? On Saturday 16th February one of our committee members has organised a fund raising event in memory of her son Ben who would have turned 18 this month but sadly lost his battle with cancer aged four. Phil the Rhythm has kindly agreed to provide the disco entertainment at no cost and there will be a free buffet provided by Moreton Hall Caterers, again at no cost. There will also be a grand raffle during the evening, as many friends and local businesses have kindly donated prizes. Tickets are just £5 each and ALL proceeds from the night will go directly to CLIC Sargent. Tickets are available from the bar, Post Office or by calling Liz on 07814 242273. So why not get together with family or friends and support this fantastic cause. (Please note this event will be taking place in the hall, not the clubroom.)
On Sunday 17th February we are holding a table top sale in the hall from 10am. Tables are £5 each so if you have anything to sell why not book a table or just come along to hunt for a bargain! Refreshments will be available. Also on Sunday 17th February we will serve our second monthly two-course Sunday roast. January’s was popular and delicious! This month’s will be roast beef with all the trimmings and fresh vegetables. With a selection of desserts it is extremely good value at only £5 a head. Please pre-book behind the bar or call Kerrie on 763402 or call or text Rob on 07850 300047. On Saturday 2nd March we have planned a charity Race Night. Two of our members are running the 2013 London Marathon and are raising funds for their chosen charity CLIC Sargent. Always a great night for all ages, come along and join in the fun! We have live music booked for 16th and 30th March. Also a FIFA 13 Xbox Tournament planned. More details in next month’s MHD. The Sunday members draw has not been won at the time of writing this and stands at £110. We have launched our Monday Morning Pop In Club and is open to anybody to call in for a tea or coffee, cake and a chat after 9.30am. We look forward to welcoming you. Bingo continues to be held every other Tuesday from 8pm. February’s dates are 5th and 19th. We have added a new game. If you own the numbered ticket which corresponds to the last number called on the last game of bingo, you win the cash pot. For the session on the 5th, this is guaranteed to be £100! Tickets cost 50p and are available to anyone who has played bingo throughout the evening. Come and try your luck! Finally, we would like to take this opportunity to introduce our new bar manager, Clare Harding. Clare is taking over the reins from Kerrie Norris who many of you will know has managed the bar for the past eight years. Kerrie will continue to work for the Association & Club managing all aspects of running a busy Community Centre. Our thanks go to Kerrie for her many years of hard work and welcome on board Clare! The strong team of staff and committee members that we now have will endeavour to drive the club forward providing a huge benefit to members and the wider community. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Hidden matters are likely to surface. You would be wise to consider attending lectures that will broaden your awareness concerning your professional direction. Self-deception about relation ships is a problem. You will need to take a look at the renovations that are necessary and try to find the cheapest way to get things done.
Concentrate on spending quality time with children. Visitors are likely to drop by and chances are, they may even stay a little longer than you want them to. Ideas may sound good, but be careful if people are just looking for handouts. Help with your aspirations is likely, and profits could follow.

Act now! Michael Wangermann, a Personal Injury Partner at Ashton KCJ Solicitors, offers some useful advice. The logical thing for an injury lawyer to write about at this time of year would be the increase in road accidents and trips and slips during the cold weather. However, I’d rather draw your attention to another topical issue. The rules relating to costs in personal injury and fatal accident claims is changing in April 2013 and it means that anyone who has already suffered an injury but not yet ‘got round’ to starting their claim should seek advice as soon as possible. The majority of personal and medical injury claims are currently brought under conditional
fee agreements (‘no win, no fee’). The idea behind this system is that everyone who is injured through no fault of their own can get the legal help they need. The lawyer’s ‘success fee’ has traditionally been paid by ‘the defendant’ – the insurance company in the case of an RTA claim, the NHS Trust in a medical injury claim and so on. However, the proposed changes as they appear are likely to mean that solicitors will have to deduct their ‘success fee’ out of the client’s compensation award instead - albeit that damages are suppossed to increase to take this into account. We would therefore strongly encourage anyone who has already suffered an injury or accident but not yet sought legal advice to come and see us in the next few weeks.

Why women should lift weights? When I ask a new female client ‘what are your goals?’, 99% of the time they are looking for weight loss and to tone their bodies, most typically around the arms, stomach and bottom. When you walk into a gym you’ll see more women on cardio vascular machines (e.g. treadmill, bike, rower etc) than using weights or doing body weight exercises, however, the women with toned figures will most definitely be found in the weights section. As is common in life, once we become confident with a task it becomes easier, which explains why women are often scared to try out lifting weights and escape from the comfort of their usual gym regime. In my experience women are generally scared of lifting incorrectly, intimidated by “muscle men” and don’t want to bulk up and look like Arnold Schwarzenegger. How many women are currently bored of their Cardiovascular gym workouts? Or worse, have quit the gym because of this? When you stick to cardiovascular training you will inevitably get bored as there are very little progressions you can make. Your body will always adjust to the level of work you are putting in and you will find that your results will plateau. With strength training, progress can always be made and there are so many variables you can use. When I first train a woman in the weights section, posture and technique is key and the most important aspect of the training. As mentioned earlier, once an exercise becomes easier then confidence will grow to complete the exercise time and time again.
Did you know women typically have 10% of the testosterone that men have. Testosterone is the primary muscle building hormone, so since women have less of this hormone they’re really going to struggle to gain large amounts of muscle mass.
When weights are used correctly, with the right training programme there are many more benefits for weight training including: l Your metabolic rate will increase – For every pound of lean muscle mass you gain you burn an extra 50 calories per day. l Decrease your risk of injury – lifting weights helps you develop stronger tendons, this gives your joints more support and stability through daily task. l Stronger bones and connective tissue - lifting weights is load bearing exercise which helps strengthen your bones. Maintaining strong and healthy bones lowers your risk of osteoporosis. l Reduction in body fat levels - This goes hand in hand with having more lean muscle mass and speeding your metabolic rate up. Lowering body fat reduces the amount of toxins in your body which improves the quality and elasticity of your skin.
So women, if you are looking to change your current gym programme, or have noticed your results have stagnated, get in touch and let’s start lifting some...

I was offered a rather delicious cappuccino and taken to my nail station (one of several in the salon) by Fiona my beauty therapist for the treatment. I was embarrassed at the state of my nails (I’m a nail biter!) but Fiona put me at ease straight away and talked me through the various finishes, lengths and finer detail about acrylic nails. Acrylic nail application is a fairly simple process (well, Fiona makes it look simple, I wouldn’t want to try it myself). A tip is first applied to your existing nail and cut to the length you prefer, then acrylic is applied over the top of your own nail and the tip, which then sets almost instantly to form a completely solid, ‘new’ nail. I decided to go for a fairly short length as I’m on a computer most of the day, and a neutral polish finish. Other options are a natural white tip french manicure look – which is a great option if you are not a nail polish type of girl, and of course the choice of nail polish
colour is pretty much endless. The whole process to transform my nails from ‘meh’ to ‘wow’ took around an hour, but the time whizzed by as we chatted away. The atmosphere in the salon is very friendly and very relaxed, I could of happily sat there for hours!
I had a Shellac pedicure at Stephen John for my honeymoon – and honestly after two weeks they looked like I’d just done them that morning. They still had a high shine and there were no chips at all. I won’t go on holiday again without my Shellac Pedicure that’s for sure.
i was so pleased with my finished nails I literally couldn’t stop looking at them all night, much to my husbands amusement. well if you are a nail biter, seeing your nails in a perfect condition is quite a novelty. They feel completely secure and are definitely not going to ping off like some of the shop bought ones can.
Acrylics at Stephen John are available at £31. And I highly recommend the Shellac Fast Fix Manicure and Pedicure offer (below) at £40 – it’s a complete bargain. And it makes a fab Valentines gift guys! (hint, hint). l
Stephen John Beauty offer tons of fantastic treatments, but another nail treatment of theirs that I’m a little bit obsessed with is Shellac. Shellac is a bit of a manicure miracle. It’s a completely smudge-proof nail colour that lasts for weeks without chipping.

I am in pain, what should I do? by John Singleton M.Ost Part 2 In Part 1 (available at www. jcsingleton.co.uk) we saw that our understanding of pain has evolved since the times of Rene Descartes and we (well, those clever researchers) have discovered that pain is not all about input / tissue damage... but that our output / cognition can create our pain experience. In part 2 we are going to see some real life examples of how and why this can occur... But before we do I would just like to provide you with a few interesting facts about back pain in the UK: • Back pain is very common; almost half the adult population of the UK report back pain at some time in the year! And 80% of adults will experience back pain at some stage in their life.4 • The total cost of back pain corresponds to between 1% and 2% of gross national product (GDP).6 This includes the NHS spending more than £1 billion per year on back pain and in the private healthcare sector £565 million is spent on back pain every year.7 • Nearly 5 million working days were lost as a result of back pain in 2003-04. This means that on any one day 1% of the working population are on sickness leave due to a back problem.8 So as you can see, back pain is a rather costly burden on

our health care system, and chances are you will experience it during your lifetime! The positive side of it being such a widespread condition means that it has been extensively studied, leading to some rather interesting conclusions. An important step in our understanding of pain is to note that not all pain is created “equal”, and there are different categorisations of pain which can help us understand what we should do in each circumstance. To help us understand this in a little more detail we are going to use ‘Joe’ to help us understand. Joe wakes up one morning, still a little sleepy and stubs his toe on the bedside table. Not the nicest feeling but yet most of us have experienced this. There is no major tissue damage and the likelihood is he may hobble for a few hours but will have forgotten about it by the evening. We shall refer to this type of pain as Transient. Next, Joe’s best friend Bob has signed him up for a marathon in a week’s time. Joe having done a little running recently is feeling quite confident. He runs the marathon and has maybe been a bit too confident as he ‘pulls’ his calf, developing a muscle strain. He finishes, but the next morning struggles to
walk without a limp. Gradually over the next couple of weeks the pain diminishes and Joe is back able to train for his next marathon. We shall refer to this type of pain as Acute. This time Joe has woken up with a stiff neck, not sure why, maybe a change in his pillows. Over the next few weeks while cycling to work Joe notices some difficulties turning his head, and so decides to stop cycling. The pain is starting to become more noticeable and not really resolving he is even noticing his sleep has become affected. Two months later he is still suffering some discomfort in his neck and is starting to accept that a bad night’s sleep due to pain is normal. We shall refer to this type of pain as Chronic. This type of long-lasting chronic pain is not uncommon and it is estimated at any one time that 20% of people have pain that has persisted for more than 3 months3 (2,000,000 Londoners!).9 In addition, there is rarely any tissue damage that can be correlated with the pain!10 But how does this information help us? During Part 3 we are going to look at some useful information that can help you

health&beauty Whether you are an at-home tanning kind of gal, or the spray-me-quick at a tanning salon chick, check out these tips before you slather on the gel, cream, lotion, or get a spray, on how to make your skin smooth before application.
Exfoliate! Nothing is more important than exfoliating prior to treatment when it comes to self-tanning. This will smooth out your skin’s texture, ensuring even results in the beginning, and days later as the colour starts to fade away. We suggest scrubbing your skin all over in a circular motion while in the shower. Buff away the dead skin with an exfoliating prep product or just plain soap, with a shower puff, loufa, or a rough face cloth. This will give you a smooth base to apply your choice of self tanning product.

Scrub your palms!
Allow 6-8 hours of development time even if the product claims it can be shorter. Hold off on the shower, singing in the rain, or excess perspiration to get the deepest colour and remain streak-free.
Apply self tanning creams lighter on problem areas like knees, elbows, ankles, or any other dry skin patches. Try this tip: “Apply a light coat of water-based moisturiser to these areas before application to prevent excessive absorption.

Scrub them clean every five minutes when applying self tanning lotions yourself. This prevents the tell tale sign of a sunless tan gone wrong, orange coloured palms.
Moisturise daily. You want to keep your skin from drying because this can prematurely cause your fake tan to fade. It also keeps your skin looking moist, fresh and young.
Look gorgeous all year round!
