A combination of dietary tips, mind/body exer and latest rese cises arch blended to gether to prom ote health &

vitality.

Director, The Self Centre

This month we look at one of our new therapies: Systematic Kinesiology Kinesiology uses knowledge of both Eastern and Western techniques for assessing and correcting imbalances in the body.

(In the case of the latissimus dorsi / Spleen meridian, this also shows up imbalances in the pancreas, as well as the spleen.)

Background

Goodheart found that imbalances in the meridians could be corrected by a variety of means, such as rubbing points on the body associated with stimulating lymphatic drainage from an organ, lightly holding points that stimulate blood flow, rubbing a point on the spine that stimulates the nerve supply, holding or tapping acupuncture points to stimulate meridian energy flow, or rubbing the ends or belly of the affected muscle itself.

In the 1960s, George Goodheart, an American chiropractor, discovered a direct relationship between muscle strength and the functioning of the meridian system of the body. Meridians are a concept of Chinese medicine and are lines or channels along which life energy (known as Chi) is considered to flow. These meridians are mapped along the surface of the body but also flow through the organs to which they are related; for example, the Liver meridian, Small Intestine meridian, etc. Although the meridians are referred to individually, they interlink with each other and any imbalances in the flow of energy throughout this system will prevent the body from functioning at its best. Key locations along each meridian are used in Chinese medicine to control the energy flowing along and between meridians. These are referred to as acupuncture points, though in kinesiology finger pressure is used to work with points rather than needles! Goodheart worked with an acupuncturist and found that if a particular meridian is sedated using acupuncture, certain muscles are weakened, these muscles being directly related to that meridian. For example, the thigh muscles (quadriceps) are linked to the Small Intestine meridian; the biceps are linked to the Stomach meridian; the latissimus dorsi (the “lats”) are linked to the Spleen meridian. He realised that through these associations, the strength of muscles could be used to evaluate whether each meridian is in balance or not. In fact, due to the link between muscle, meridian and organ, a muscle that tests weak indicates an imbalance somewhere in the circuit of those three components.

Putting the techniques of assessment and corrections together, he called his new method Applied Kinesiology, and further research has expanded the various techniques of assessment and corrections. Kinesiology today Since then, many derivatives of the parent system have arisen, each with slightly differing ways of working with the body, e.g. focusing on biochemistry, or emotional issues. Arguably, Systematic Kinesiology is the most closely related to Applied Kinesiology and derives from the latest research in the parent system. Regardless of the type of kinesiology practised, all forms of kinesiology use muscle testing to evaluate the status of the body via the meridian system and (since muscles are controlled by the brain) the nervous system. The corrections required to restore balance to the body are also assessed individually during an appointment. As previously mentioned, these can involve light or deep massage, holding or tapping acupuncture points, tracing the path of meridians just above the body, gentle manipulation of the pelvis, spine or head, and occasionally nutritional supplementation. Muscle testing is used to identify those corrections specifically required to restore the body to balance, and only those corrections identified as required by the body are then applied. Once in balance, all muscles of the body will test as equally ‘strong.’ To summarise, kinesiology assesses patterns of imbalance in the body and what the body needs to be restored to balance.

The remedies and advice suggested in this article are the personal opinion of the author. Please also inform your GP if you are planning to take any natural remedies and you are already on long term prescribed drugs.

health & beauty So what does that mean in practise? Different types of stress that we encounter in our daily lives can disrupt the nervous system and/or energy flow in certain meridians. Kinesiology is not diagnostic in the medical sense but by finding patterns of imbalance associated with stress, can be used for almost any condition. For example: • physical pain • emotional stress • organ imbalances such as bowel dysfunction, menstrual problems, etc. • effects of toxicity such as food sensitivities and intolerances • postural and movement problems • muscle function As muscles are controlled by the brain and spinal cord reflexes, kinesiology also evaluates the effects of stress on the brain / nervous system. This means it can also be helpful for: • co-ordination problems • problems with reflexes and development in children • sensory imbalances • fears, phobias and other limiting behaviours / belief patterns Perhaps most importantly, kinesiology is used to help maintain good health. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, when the body’s energy is flowing freely throughout the meridian system, the body can function at its optimum state of health.

This month Sue Heartburn ...

Lucente talks about

This month I thought I would write about a topic that is likely to affect many of us at this time of year, especially with Decembers festivities giving us an excuse to overindulge. Heartburn is something that most people will experience at some point in their life. The good news is that there are many things that we can do to help reduce our risk of suffering from it. Heartburn is the burning sensation in the chest that we sometimes experience particularly after eating a large meal. At the entrance to the stomach there is a valve called the lower oesophageal sphincter. This valve allows food to pass through and should then close to prevent the acid produced in the stomach from leaving that area and moving upwards. If this valve is faulty, doesn’t close completely or is put under pressure it can allow the acid to travel upwards causing the burning sensation we know as heartburn. Some factors that can affect the function of this valve include over eating ,thus putting pressure on it and making it more difficult to close properly . Lying down after a meal or snacking shortly before bed and then lying flat. Alcohol, tea, coffee and fizzy drinks can also contribute particularly if consumed with a meal. Other symptoms can include bloating, nausea, burping and persistent hiccups. To reduce your risk of developing heartburn start by allowing time to sit and eat your food, preferably in a relaxed frame of mind so that you can enjoy your food. Digestion starts in the mouth as chewing and saliva begin the process and start to break down the food before it enters the stomach. Stop eating when you are comfortably full to prevent putting added pressure on the valve. Sip water with your meal rather than adding extra liquid which will also add pressure. Reduce the fat intake in your diet, avoid fatty meats, instead opt for lean protein

16

such as chicken and fish. Fibre rich foods will also aid digestion. Wear loose fitting clothes around your middle A gentle walk after a meal is a good way of helping the gastric juices flow in the right direction. Avoid lying flat after eating, if you have a snack before bedtime try propping yourself up on a couple of pillows. Smoking is also bad for your digestion as it slows it down and reduces the amount of saliva you produce which is your bodies natural defence against stomach acid. Try to cut down or stop if possible. This will not only improve your digestion but your overall health.

When is Tendonitis not a Tendonitis? An often used term to describe inflammation (‘itis’) of the tissue that connects muscle to bone that may occur as result of an acute strain or appear gradually over time. Recent evidence suggests this inflammation process naturally resolves over 2-3 months yet the pain and stiffness remain. Therefore a new term is now used - ‘Tendonopathy’ – to describe the changes taking place in these specialised tissues (fibrosis, micro-damage, degeneration and sensitivity of pain nerves) This is why there is so much confusion as to the use of Anti-inflammatory drugs/creams, cold packs vs hot packs, and rest vs activity (to name just a few) The key to understanding tendon problems is accepting that not all tendons are the same and that there are definitive stages that they go through before they completely heal. These factors have to then be dovetailed in with your own unique characteristics (age, sex, previous injuries etc.) to better understand the nature of ‘your’ Tendonopathy. Only when this is achieved can a tailored treatment plan, rehabilitation and graded loading programme be put in place. “There is no standard treatment recipe for any Tendonopathy” Here at The Abbeyfields Clinic we have a special interest in tendon related problems, conducting our own research and attending numerous post graduate conferences to keep abreast of new developments. If you want to find out more about your ‘tendonitis’ and how to achieve a full recovery then book now or email james@theabbeyfieldsclinic.co.uk for more information.

Welcome to the 19th hole, a place for golf tips, reviews and everything golf related.

The September weather was kind to us golf fans, not only did we have decent weather to finish off the golfing season but we also witnessed an amazing Ryder Cup at the fantastic Gleneagles resort.

Congratulations TEAM EUROPE The images of Jamie Donaldson’s shot to secure the cup, Justin Rose holing every putt he looked at on the Saturday and Rory Mcilory’s master class 5&4 singles win over the inform Rickie Fowler will all stick in our memories for years to come..... Or at least until 2016 at Hazeltine National GC, Minneapolis. #bringthenoise

Product Review But now that autumn has finally arrived some golfers will put the clubs away to hibernate for the winter. Only us golf addicts will be playing come rain, shine or frost, with this in mind this month I have reviewed a golf product that will help us hardened golfers combat the wet and windy conditions this winter.

Introducing Mizuno’s Rain Fit Gloves Mizuno tells us that, the wetter the weather gets, the better the Rain Fit glove gets. That’s because the gloves contain a clarino microfibre suede palm, which is activated by moisture so you get the best traction. I tested these gloves on a day that saw a couple of heavy showers and the gloves certainly offered great grip in wet conditions, the clarino microfibre palm really did improve the worst the weather became. The traction they offered throughout the round was amazing and I felt that I could swing without fear of losing any grip.

The only slight negative I had with the Rain Fit gloves was that I wasn’t really a fan of wearing a pair of gloves. I think this is because I normally only wear one, however for many people this won’t be a problem and with some practice wearing both gloves I would get used to them. In summary these gloves really do what Mizuno say, they are a great product for those wet and wintery days and possibly some days throughout our very British summer. To stay in control in these less than favourable conditions these gloves are a must. Coaches Tip - Wrap up for winter golf! As we have said winter is just around the corner, one of the hardest aspects to adjust to this time of year is the amount of clothing you are wearing whilst playing this wonderful game. So as mad as it sounds my tip is month is to practice in layers, hats and full waterproofs. This way when that day comes, when you have to put all this extra clothing on to finish your game it won’t be such a shock. The strange looks you get practicing in all your winter clothing might be the difference between winning or losing, or even just getting out in the winter months with friends. If you’re struggling with your golf game then please feel free to contact me for any coaching advice or to book a lesson.

Lucky Ipswich Couple Win £1,000 at Glasswells

Helen and Gary Morgan correctly answered Glasswells’ summer competition question and have won £1,000 to spend on beautiful new home furnishings in store. The competition, launched in the Glasswells Summer Sale brochure, asked customers to identify the wellknown brand that made one of the featured bedroom ranges. Answers were submitted in store and online, with one lucky person being drawn at random from the correct entries. The win couldn’t have come at a better time for the couple as they are currently in the process of renovating their home in Ipswich, where they have lived for seven years with Jasper, their much loved pet cat. Mrs Morgan was speechless when she received the surprise phone call informing her that they had won the competition, having now had time to digest the wonderful news she adds “I can’t wait to start work on the kitchen and to replace the flooring, which has been down since we moved in. I never dreamt I would actually win, it came as such a lovely surprise.” Paul Glasswell, Managing Director, commented on how important it is to reward loyal customers. He explained ‘Competitions are a great way to interact with our customers and to demonstrate how much we appreciate their support. I’m sure Mr and Mrs Morgan will have a fabulous time shopping with us over the coming months and our staff look forward to giving them a very warm welcome.’ Glasswells are giving you another chance to win £1,000 this Autumn, enter in store or online at www.glasswells.co.uk/competition.

WI News Tonight’s meeting was a real treat. We celebrated Margaret’s 70th birthday, the wonderfully talented crafts lady as well as the Secretary! Our Speaker was Martyn Taylor, Local Tour Guide and author of books on local history. He told us of the history of Nowton Court – pronounced “No” ton Court which I had not heard before! James Oakes was the star of the story, initially a wool merchant but as the trade declined moved in to banking and clearly was successful in this. He kept a diary for 48 years and from this can be learned a lot about local Georgian society. Workers were treated fairly by him – he provided them with a pub so the wages went back into his business!! He at one time owned the Atheneum selling shares in it and hence the ”Subscription Rooms” sign that you see today. He purchased Nowton Court which his grandson re-modelled in later years. Signs of the family remain to this day with the Oak tree forming part of the sign outside Lloyd’s Bank and the Bury Society has erected a Blue plaque to him on the side of the “Connections” building in St Andrew’s St South which had been his combing sheds in the earlier days of his career. Girls Night Out

Biggest and best event yet More than 1,500 women stepped out on Saturday 13 September to make the 2014 Girls Night Out moonlight walk in aid of St Nicholas Hospice Care, the biggest and best ever. As the sun set and dusk fell, Angel Hill was lit up by a sea of flashing bunny ears. The pyjama-clad women gathered in their hundreds in central Bury as they prepared to trek either six or 11.2 miles round the town, raising an estimated £150,000. The evening was filled with laughter and camaraderie, alongside more tender moments in which walkers remembered loved ones at the memory wall on Angel Hill and at the Hospice. This year is the sixth Girls Night Out walk and, with 1,500 women signed up, has smashed all previous records. Jenny Baskett, Hospice Events and Challenges Fundraiser, said: “Thank you to everyone who has taken part in Girls Night Out and made it such a huge success. It is always emotional to see the walkers set off from Angel Hill together and to see such wonderful community spirit across the town. Thank you also to everyone who has supported the walkers by sponsoring them or coming out into their gardens and cheering them on.” Friends and work colleagues Venetia Plumb and Christine Rayment, from Bury, walked as team ‘New Nannies.’ Venetia said: “We’ve taken part in Girls Night Out every year since it started – all six years. My father-in-law was cared for by the Hospice so for me it’s an important local cause.”

Recipe of the month WINTER ROOT MASH WITH BUTTERY CRUMBS Great recipe to add to the Christmas Dinner this year. A little bit of this winter root mash goes a long way - make it a day ahead and cut the stress on Christmas Day

Prep time: 50 mins - 1 hr Cook time: 40 min Serves: 10

Ingredients

Method

650g parsnips, cut into even chunks

In a large pan of boiling salted water, cook the parsnips and swede, covered, for about 20 minutes until tender. Drain well, then mash them together using a masher or food processor until reasonably smooth but still with a bit of texture. Stir in the soured cream, horseradish and thyme and season with salt and pepper.

650g swedes, cut into same size chunks as the parsnips 142ml tub soured cream 1 rounded tbsp hot horseradish (English Provender is good) 2 tbsp fresh thyme leaves butter, for greasing For the butter topping 50g butter 1 small onion, finely chopped 50g fresh white breadcrumbs (from about 4 slices) a small handful thyme leaves, plus extra for scattering 25g parmesan, coarsely grated

26

The Moreton Hall Directory

Spoon into a buttered shallow ovenproof dish and put to one side. Make the topping. Melt the butter in a frying pan and cook the onion for 5-6 minutes, until gorgeously golden. Mix in the breadcrumbs and stir to brown and crisp a little. Season with salt and pepper and add the thyme. Take the pan off the heat. Spoon the mixture casually over the top of the mash. Scatter over the parmesan. (Can be made ahead to this point and kept covered in the fridge for up to a day. Or can be frozen for up to a month.) Bake with the turkey (190C/gas 5/ fan 170C) for 3540 minutes if doing from cold, 25-30 minutes if not, or 11⁄2-13⁄4 hours from frozen (put foil on top, and remove it for the last 10 minutes) – until golden and crisp on top. Serve scattered with a few more thyme sprigs and leaves.

Moreton Hall’s Monthly Nature Watch by Woodland Ways

The impact of outdoor lighting We tend to think it is normal to be outside in the daytime, but 60% of British mammals are completely or mostly nocturnal - think of hedgehogs, foxes, rabbits and of course bats. The natural cycle of day and night over billions of years means that animals have evolved to live in these conditions. As well as activity during the day or night, day length also resets animal’s body clocks. At night, the light from the moon and sometimes from the stars is used by birds, many insects, and other animals for navigation. So when we install outdoor lighting, for security or to extend our outdoor activity long into the evening, it disrupts the life of nocturnal animals. A simple example is when moths fly to a light, with their moonlight navigation thrown into disarray by something outside their evolutionary experience. Even if you turn the light off before the moth dies, it will have lost feeding

or mating time, and might not find decent shelter, so probably will die prematurely. Loss of moths means that the plants they pollinate might not get pollinated, or only partially so. Every dead moth is one less mouthful for our bats, so bat survival and reproductive success suffers. We do see pipistrelle bats flying in Moreton Hall, because they do tolerate lights better than other species, and sometimes pipistrelle bats fly around lampposts to catch moths around the lights. But there are few other moths and if the lights weren’t there, more bats and other species could feed. Switching our lampposts off at midnight probably benefits a whole load of nocturnal species, if they can get through the evening. But do you really need your security light or porch light on all that time?

FLOODING SHEERWATER CLOSE

Due to the heavy rainfall over the last four months, Sheerwater Close has suffered substantial damage from flooding. Two houses were flooded out twice and the owners are still drying out their houses. The problem has been caused by the drain system not being able to cope with the amount of rain water on mount road; it flows over the path and cascades down into the gardens and through the houses. I have been in touch with Highways who contacted Anglian Water and together they are sorting out the problem, they are installing two gullies at the low point in Mount which should prevent any more flooding.

FOOTBALL FIELD SAINSBURYS CROSSING I have had several complaints regarding broken beer bottles thrown all over the football field next to the youth centre which is then used by about ten teams every Sunday. This is a very dangerous and foolish behaviour by a minority of idiots, drinking and getting tanked up then throwing bottles onto the field and breaking them. The police have been informed and have started to patrol this area Friday and Saturday nights. Hopefully this will sort out the problem. Every Sunday, very dedicated people give up their time to provide training and support for many youngsters, family support is also important and mums come with their other children. The last thing we want is young kids getting cut by broken glass. Think before you let your children on the field look for any glass.

DOG WALKERS Some of our regular dog walkers requested a bench to be erected up on Ten Acre field. It looks very nice but sadly in the wrong position, I have asked our parks manager to relocate it or provide another at the back of the football pitch. Hopefully this will be carried out soon.

30

The Moreton Hall Directory

The crossing is almost complete, however not everyone is happy about its arrival. One lady wrote in the BFP that she preferred the old way, this crossing was asked for over two years ago by some residents who are not as nimble as this lady seems to be. More concerns were raised about mums with prams and buggies; the island was not big enough to accommodate both unless they turned sideways, also disabled buggies, school children and the elderly need time to cross. I know the speed of some of those large vehicles could pull someone onto the road.

WINTER The weather men have forecasted a very cold winter. We don’t have to believe them, however maybe it wouldn’t be a bad idea to have your central heating checked just in case. It is a lot cheaper to have a service than to call out a repair man in the event of a breakdown, think about it, you could save yourself money.

CLUB

Having given the club a chance to meet every Tuesday I am afraid the take up was minimal, we will now move back to the first Tuesday of every month 11am - 1.30pm, so why not come along and enjoy a cup of tea with other like minded people.

Until next time, take care, Frank

Christ Church Moreton Hall

I was very pleased by the large number of people who came to our Harvest Festival. I am glad you all enjoyed it. I realise now that we should have told you that we would have two enormous tractors parked outside the church for the day. Many of you came and had your photograph taken and it was a joy to do that. If it is possible in future years we will have them again, or some other important agricultural machinery. If so, we will let you know in good time. The generosity of God at harvest time reminds us that God would like us to be generous to those around us too. Therefore, in November we will be doing our Shoebox appeal for Christmas. The reason it is so early is to enable the boxes to get from Britain to the countries they are to be delivered to. Our special ‘Shoebox’ service will be on 23rd November at 10.30 a.m. and we hope many of you will be coming. In previous years we have filled over 200 boxes and we hope to exceed that target this year. One practical point is that if you would like to fill a box, we will provide you with one that is already pre-wrapped so all you have to do is fill it up and bring it back to us on 23rd November. It will be a great service and it will be fun to see the huge pile of shoeboxes go off to the particular country in need. The reason we give shoeboxes for Christmas is partly because of the three kings bringing their gifts to Jesus and also because Jesus Christ, the baby, is God’s gift to us all. It is also more blessed to give than to receive. The real buzz you get from knowing you have sent a package of things you have bought and fitted carefully into that box, and that it is going to go to someone in desperate need who will have no other Christmas present or indeed no Christmas at all, gives everyone a real glow of satisfaction. That is why tens of thousands of people across the UK do this every year. But the real importance is the impact on those people who receive them. Having spent some time with somebody who has seen them delivered in Romania and Lima, he says that it is not just the joy that you give, but these

32

people, often in desperate situations, suddenly realise there is someone they have never met, outside their world, who cares about them. This has the effect of making them feel really valued and giving them fresh hope for the situation they find themselves in. My own thought is that kindness is probably the best way of dealing with all the threats that our country faces at this time. One of the things that fuels terrorism is a sense of desperation that some people feel in third world countries. When they realise there are people outside their situation who care about them and are trying to do something to help, the ground is cut away from those who would want to radicalise them and turn them into terrorists. It is very rare that someone returns hostility and violence for kindness. In my experience, kindness always produces kindness in others. So, as we enter into the month when we remember all the people who died in the First World War and we prepare ourselves for all the wonders and joys of Christmas, take the opportunity of supporting Shoebox either by your prayers or by doing one yourself. Best of all, why not turn up on Sunday 23rd November for a wonderful family service when we can share the joys of doing Shoebox together. With every good wish, Yours sincerely, Reverand Canon Jonathan Ford. Minister

Zack realises his dream of going solo A new restaurant aiming to rival the best in East Anglia opened its doors on Angel Hill, Bury St Edmunds recently.

Paul Bailey, Mel Bailey, Leighton

Bailey, Zack Deakins.

Critically acclaimed Chef Zack Deakins is the new patron of 1921 Angel Hill and brings a wealth of experience to his new venture. Formerly head chef at the Bildeston Crown and Le Talbooth, Dedham, Zack also trained under Michelin-starred chef Martin Wishart at his restaurant in Edinburgh. 1921 is the realisation of a long held dream to run his own business and will offer a fine dining restaurant and canapé bar along with private dining facilities for parties and group bookings. Said Zack “I have been fortunate to have worked with some amazing chefs and my own menu is drawn from their influences as well as my love of travel, reading and eating out a lot. I am so excited to be opening my own restaurant and to be able to share my passion for beautifully cooked fresh, local produce. I think Bury St Edmunds is just the town do it in”. The elegant, newly refurbished restaurant takes its name from its address at 19-21 Angel Hill, a heavily beamed Grade II listed building. Formerly run by Paul Bailey as Graze Kitchen & Bar, Paul now joins Zack and brings to the table his own vast experience in running restaurants and pubs in the area. 1921 is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week as well as for Christmas parties with a competitively priced menu. Bookings can be made on 01284 704870, email info@nineteen-twentyone.co.uk or check out www.nineteen-twentyone.co.uk

NEWS FROM MORETON HALL RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION My thanks to Tony Peck for stepping in and producing the article for October while I sojourned in the New Forest. To follow his theme we met with representatives of St.Eds.Borough Council and the Developers on the 2nd. October. We were given a comprehensive briefing followed by a lengthy question and answer session which at times became very heated. Work on the Relief/Link road is scheduled to start during September 2015 and finish during September 2016. As mentioned previously we believe it’s effectiveness will depend on traffic being able to flow freely in both directions through Skyliner Way.To this end it was suggested that the road become a “Freeway”’ and to allay the possibility of those presently parking there from migrating to the residential area parking lay-bys be created alongside the road.

September 2015 to September 2016 are also the dates for building the new school on Lady Miriam Way and the Planning Application for that is eagerly awaited as is news of the Football Facility. We have asked for information to wet your appetites in time for the AGM /Open Meeting, 12th. November 7.30pm Community Centre. I have temporarily shut down our website, using Google Sites was becoming too cumbersome. As we have limited funds I am looking for a free or very very cheap hosting service, any ideas ? Abbeycroft Leisure to Reinvest £114,000 into Leisure Centres to Meet Growing Fitness Demand Abbeycroft Leisure is to reinvest £114,000 into Bury St Edmunds and Haverhill Leisure Centres to meet growing demand for fitness activities. Charitable leisure trust Abbeycroft, which manages the centres in partnership with St Edmundsbury Borough Council, will reinvest £73,000 at Haverhill to expand its gym and power room and £41,000 at Bury St Edmunds to meet growing demand for its popular exercise classes. As a leisure trust and social enterprise award winning Abbeycroft ploughs all profits made back into providing health and fitness and this investment constitutes the start of a yearly update programme. Chief Executive of Abbeycroft Leisure Warren Smyth said: “This is the start of a yearly reinvestment programme for Abbeycroft, keeping our facilities up to date and keeping up with fitness trends. As a charitable trust we reinvest all profits made back into providing health and fitness for the local community. We are seeing a boom in exercise classes in Bury and in our gym and power room in Haverhill and we need to meet that demand. This significant investment that we are announcing today will meet that demand and give customers what they need to meet their fitness goals.” At Bury St Edmunds Leisure Centre exercise classes are at capacity and there is a need to expand classes. The trust plans to knock through a wall in studio 1 into squash court number 3 to create a larger area for supersize classes. This will create up to 15 extra

spaces per class. For example its very popular Yogalates class is at capacity and the new supersize studio will create an extra 30 spaces. In addition to class expansions, the Centre’s creche will be moved to one of the squash courts with a £2,500 creative learning centre for children to play. Fully supervised, it will provide a fun and educational environment for children to play in while their parents can work out. The changes are expected to start in September in phased stages and be complete in the autumn. At Haverhill Leisure Centre Abbeycroft is investing in an extra 42 fitness stations in the Centre’s gym. In addition to this, the combat area which is currently on the third floor will be relocated to the ground floor gym making space to expand the very popular power room. An Xcube functional training station will also be installed in the gym which focuses on exercises to build a body capable of doing real-life activities in real-life positions, rather than just lifting weights. The new facilities at Haverhill will be open in the autumn. Neil Anthony, Head of Leisure, Culture and Communities for West Suffolk councils said: “I am doubly delighted, first that demand for exercise activity in the borough is growing and also because Abbeycroft Leisure is investing in first rate facilities to meet demand. The health benefits of being more active have wide reaching implications for the overall cost of public services and I applaud Abbeycroft’s success, which comes from the great relationship it has with its customers.”

The beautiful game

by Andrew Southwood

The World Cup is now a distant memory. Sitting in my over crowded cranial hard drive somewhere between the flunked physics test and the broken collar bone incident. If it was my iPhone, I’d delete them all to free up some space. However, it’s strange how actually attending a match can drawer you back in again with tempting glimmers of glory and hope that a new season brings. I attended one of Bury Towns rare home wins with a mate the other week. To be honest I had taken my eye off the game for a few seconds to tackle my cheeseburger when we scored the opener. Our conversation alternated from dodgy off-side decisions, to baby weaning. Times have changed. Then it’s to Portman Road and the home of my first love, Ipswich Town. Time and money limit my visits, but it always has a special place in my heart. I’ve taken the kids to the stadium and it’s an experience they still talk about. Next on the list is Wembley. The last time I went I was

46

The Moreton Hall Directory

not only much younger, but also close to cardiac failure seconds before Reuser secured promotion with that goal (please pause to relive that magical moment…). Now, 14 years later (arghh!!!), the iconic two towers are gone and a giant arch in its place. I can’t wait to see it for myself as I take my son to his (and indeed my) first competitive England match later this month. My sons’ weekend football training is also a highlight not only for him, but also for me and his little sister, who loves to watch. As the smallest boy on the pitch he tries hard and loves every second. His feet aren’t big enough to get ‘proper boots’ like the rest of them, but that

does not deter him. After all, no one else has an authentic green Mexico shirt, or bright orange Ipswich away kit to wear. I admire his ambition and enthusiasm, and can’t help but wonder if I was exactly the same at his age. So, as the early sunsets try to scupper the whole family, postdinner, garden kick about we have become so accustomed to, I am thinking of solutions. At the moment Poundland head torches, hi-viz tops, and a bright yellow ball are looking like the best option. A set of 1000watt halogen flood lights may create some issues, and that’s before I even consider the impact on my strict energy saving regime!?

Jesus Christ Superstar

to hit Theatre Royal stage

Popular rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar, by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, will hit the Bury St Edmunds stage in November. The Irving Stage Company, which is based in Bury but has members from across Suffolk, will perform the musical at the town’s Theatre Royal from November 4-8. The show features a large cast of talented performers, many of them familiar to Theatre Royal audiences; and the powerful and much-loved score is performed by a live band. Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice met in 1965. Having found success with their collaboration Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, they chose another religious story for their next project: Jesus Christ Superstar. The musical debuted as a concept album in 1970, topping the charts and generating interest and controversy. The show was produced on Broadway in 1971 starring Ben Vereen as Judas; it premiered in London the following year with Paul Nicholas as Jesus. In 1973, a film was made; and the show has remained popular on stage and screen ever since – including the recent arena tour which sold out at major venues across the UK. Jesus Christ Superstar portrays the last seven days in the life of Jesus of Nazareth. The tale begins with Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem and the unrest caused by his preaching and popularity. One of his followers, Judas, is disturbed by the attention Jesus is attracting and his friendship with a former prostitute, Mary. His fears lead to betrayal. It is a powerful and emotional tale of men and women driven to their fate by forces beyond their control. Christ’s final days are dramatised with emotional intensity, thought-provoking edge and explosive theatricality. The lead performers include Jonathan Lodge (Head of Drama, King Edward VI School BSE) as Jesus; Vicky Robson (Director of Music, Finborough School) as Mary; and Glen Connor (progression worker in mental health services) as Judas. Sian Couture, Director and Choreographer, said: “We are fortunate to have an amazing, enthusiastic and committed cast, who do full justice to the brilliant score that many people know so well! The cast and production team have thoroughly enjoyed the few months preparing to put this production on the wonderful Theatre Royal Stage. We hope the audiences will enjoy the powerful and emotive performances.”

A new street football project was launched on Friday 31 October in Bury St Edmunds thanks to a new partnership between Suffolk Positive Futures, Anglia Community Leisure’s Street Sports Project and Abbeycroft Leisure. The ‘street football’ project aims to offer young people aged 12-19 the opportunity to turn up and play football for free on the astro-turf at Bury St Edmunds Leisure Centre. Coaches and volunteers from both Suffolk Positive Futures and the Street Sports project will be there every Friday between 7.30pm and 9pm to deliver coaching to the young people as well as organising small matches and tournaments. The project was launched with three community sessions taking place during the October half term at Moreton Hall Youth Centre, Howard Playing Field and Hardwick Heath and there are plans to take the project back out into the community during future school holidays. The project is part funded by The Suffolk Community Foundation, one of 48 Community Foundations in the UK, via the Safer Suffolk Fund, which was set up to support the work of voluntary, community and social enterprise organisations that are delivering services that help make Suffolk a safer place to live, work, travel and invest in. The project is being delivered as a partnership between Suffolk Positive Futures, Abbeycroft Leisure and Anglia Community Leisure’s Street Sports Project. Suffolk Positive Futures is a youth crime prevention and reduction service aiming to empower young people to become positive role models and responsible citizens and is managed by Catch22, a social business, which has more than 200 years’ experience of providing services that help people turn their lives around. Abbeycroft Leisure hopes that the project will encourage more youngsters into sport and activity. The Moreton Hall Directory

Frames Conservatories Direct makes its mark as ‘Best Newcomer’ Bury St Edmunds home improvements company Frames Conservatories Direct is celebrating being named Network VEKA’s Best New Member at the organisation’s 2014 awards evening. The local company recently welcomed Network VEKA’s Brand Ambassador Steve Davis to open their extended, refurbished 150 sq. metre showroom, and it was the Six-Times World Snooker Champion who presented the company’s award on Saturday September 20th. Frames Conservatories Direct joined Network VEKA in November last year, and hit the ground running with 600 installations in the first six months. This accolade follows a survey of every customer of every member company across the UK – nearly 16,000 households in total. Network VEKA is a unique, sectoral standards organisation that only accepts the very best, most professional window and door companies, and then makes sure they stay the best. All prospective members undergo rigorous vetting

before being accepted and must agree to regular audits and training. In this way, Network VEKA can be so confident in the quality of its members’ work that every one is able to offer the organisation’s Ten Year InsuranceBacked Guarantee. Every single customer - of every single member - completes a confidential ‘customer satisfaction’ questionnaire which is sent directly back to Network VEKA. The Best New Member trophy was presented to Adrian Lewis by Steve Davis at Network VEKA’s Gala Dinner and Awards Evening in Nottingham. Steve said: “This is a fantastic accomplishment, and no doubt a great way to end your first year as a Network VEKA member. It obviously goes to show just how hard your team works.

Welcome to Gardening Tips a monthly feature providing you with hints and ideas of what to do each month in your garden. Along with a list of jobs that will enable you to enjoy and maintain your garden I will also feature a plant of the month. Pauls Jobs for the Month Garden Maintenance l Clear fallen leaves from your garden lawn and pathways. Leaves left on a lawn for a few weeks will starve the grass of light and will lead to bare patches. Use the leaves to make a leafmould. l With the likelihood of wet and windy weather to come now is the time to do a garden check. By this I mean be prepared for any potential problems that might be caused by the weather by:- checking your fence posts to ensure they are not at the point of rotting off, sheds and gates have proper locks and latches , plant stakes are firmly in the ground are still supporting plants and outdoor taps are properly lagged. l Remove unwanted ivy from trees. Left unchecked it can soon smother a tree.

Vegetable and Fruit Garden l For an early crop of broad beans next May plant seeds this month. l Stop winter moth damage to fruit trees using grease bands around the trunks

THE

OF

MON TH – Bergenia

Bergenia are mostly clump forming plants with evergreen, leathery-looking largely rounded leaves leading to them commonly being called Elephants Ears. If you are looking for a truly low maintenance plant with all year round interest then Bergenia could be your answer. Good in sun or part shade there are many different species and flower colours. Some species of Bergenia change leaf colour from green in summer to purple, crimson or ruby in winter. Remove old foliage as it turns brown so plants look tidy and give them a mulch annually.

‘Yea, I have looked, and seen November there; The changeless seal of change it seemed to be, Fair death of things that, living once, were fair; Bright sign of loneliness too great for me, Strange image of the dread eternity, In whose void patience how can these have part, These outstretched feverish hands, this restless heart?” George Cooper Octobers Party

Flower Garden l Plant out roses making sure you fill the hole with a mixture of bone meal and peat

Doing The Jobs You Don’t Have Time For?

l When the leaves drop off your shrubs you can take hard wood cuttings of many plants such as :- dogwoods, buddleia, forsythia, kerria, philadelphus, weigela, berberis and pyracantha . Cut just above a bud of a healthy stem of about 8 inches, remove any side shoots and large leaves, dip in hormone rooting powder and plant in pots or in a sheltered area of your garden. l Now is the time to plant bare root plants. Or if you have been considering moving a plant now is the time to do this. l Tidy up your perennials. Dead stems can be cut away, any leaves removed give the bare areas a fork over and then spread a mulch of compost or manure. l Now is the time to dig up your dahlia bulbs. gently remove dirt from the tubers cut back all of the growth and then store over winter in a dry, frost free place in compost.

What’s been happening at... Abbots Green Community Primary School

Both the children and staff have been absolutely delighted this term with our revamped Computing Suite. All the PC’s in the school’s Computing Suite have been replaced plus 70 ‘iPad’ tablet computers were also introduced into the school. School staff had fun at the initial tablet training session getting to grips with the iPad settings and experimenting with the new Apps that had been downloaded in readiness for sharing these with the children. The iPads caused a huge stir amongst the children: “I was so excited when I heard about the school getting iPads – and now they are fabulous” Ruby commented “When I first turned the iPad on I was like...WOW!” With their easy to use touch-screens the iPads have enabled children as young as 4 years old in our Reception Classes to get involved. The teaching staff have welcomed the addition of tablets into the classroom setting. Our Early Years staff have also been using them throughout the school day to record observations and other information for the children’s individual Learning Journeys - this is proving to be hugely beneficial and time saving. Further up the school the tablets are being regularly used in lots of different lessons. Recommended Apps are continuing to be added, Jessica commented that “There are lots of different Apps to explore” and Fred added “I am really excited about the maths games because I love maths.” As well as for learning and reference the children will be using the tablets in many different ways in school including capturing photographs and making videos – making learning even more engaging at Abbots Green.

Where will your child go to school in September 2015? To help you to make that decision we warmly invite you to attend our Open Morning. Come and see our school in action and find out for yourself what makes us unique at:

The moreton hall community centre news Hello all, welcome to the November Issue of the Moreton Hall Directory! The weather has turned, Halloween is over with and with that in mind, we’re all thinking about Christmas festivities over at the centre! We’ve told you about our Christmas Party Nights, brilliant value at £14.95 for a disco & buffet or £29.95 for a 3 course meal with a live band, but at the Club we’ve finalising plans for the end of year celebrations as well as 2015! We have our Kid’s Christmas Party on 21st December, where we will have games and music galore to keep them all entertained, as well as lots of sweets up for grabs! This will be from 12-4pm, and later on that day at 6pm we will also have the Christmas Draw! We’ll start selling squares for that very soon, where you will be able to win some great prizes on the day. Previous years prizes have included iPads, helicopter rides, TV’s and much, much more, so make sure you take a chance on a couple of squares when you’re down the club next! Of course we have our annual Christmas Eve Party (in case you need the date, it’s, er, 24th December), which for those of you who like to spend Christmas morning feeling the effects of the night before, it’s a great way to bring in Christmas Day. Last year we had a burst of karaoke at the end (thanks to a certain member of staff who did a surprisingly good rendition of Louis Armstrong), and a great night all around. Free entry for all, everyone welcome! Our New Years Eve tickets will also go on sale from November. Those that have been before can attest to a brilliant atmosphere on the night, and a great way to see in 2015. Those who haven’t, come along and find out for yourselves! We will have an entertainer on the night, dazzling us with close up magic and entertaining the kids, so it is a great family function for those worrying about where to find a family friendly function on December 31st. Ticket prices for members are : adults £6.50, children £2.50, and for non members they are adults £13.00 and children £5. These will be available behind the bar from November time. In November we have on Saturday 8th November a Family Fortunes themed quiz night, which as with all of quizzes is £1 to enter with all the entrance money going towards the cash prizes to be claimed by the victorious team on the night! Starts from 8pm!

our 80’s night we’ve asked Phil the Rhythm to come back and do a 90’s classics club night! He will be playing all of those tunes that are absolutely guaranteed to get you up and dancing, and then more that will get you jumping up and down with glee as you reminisce about the “good old days” out on the town. Bound to be a brilliant night amnd what makes it even better is that it’s free entry, and absolutely everyone is welcome! Will start from around 8:30pm in the clubroom. Tuesday night bingo stills runs every other Tuesday, with the next one being on Tuesday 11th November, then Tuesday 25th November. Starts at 8pm, all money paid in goes towards the prize fund! On Saturday November 22nd we will continue with our Saturday night Bingo sessions; to get the kids involved we will play for sweets and various goodies at the start of the session, then move on to some cash games later on. On Sunday 23rd November at 12:30pm we are having our AGM for both the Club and Association in the 1st half hall. This is your chance to have a say about the way your community centre is run and input suggestions on what you would like to see done at both the centre and club. Please come along to have your say about your community centre! On Saturday November 29th, we have a darts tournament on in the clubroom, which as ever registration opens at 7pm which is £5 per person and all the money goes towards the pot for the victor! In December we’ll have another tournament on Saturday 27th December, the same kind of timings as all our tournaments. In 2015 and beyond we’re hoping to have many different entertainment offers for all sorts – in January there’ll be a big fat quiz of 2014 where your knowledge and memory will be tested, more live music, a reprieve of casino night, kid’s activities and much, much more! Stay tuned, give us a ring or just pop round to visit and find out more! See you all soon!
