Hello Its that time of year again! When we just want to
hibernate. Too dark in the mornings to get out of bed, too dark in the evenings to venture out. But don’t worry, this months MHD will give you a little comfort reading whilst you cosy up on the sofa. Go to page 26 for another one of our yummy recipes, autumn is in mind, so good wholesome comfort food is on the menu. On the opposite page, we have a luscious warm theme going on, yellows are not just for Spring! Jeremy and I went along to ballroom dancing earlier this week with Bury Ballroom, go to page 10 to see how we got on! If you fancy getting out, our what’s on pages 65-68 have plenty for all tastes to keep you occupied until November. Halloween is around the corner again, some of us love it, but some of us don’t, so please be kind and only visit the homes decorated for the occasion, they will hopefully have enough treats to go round. Please make sure your children are safe and out with a responsible adult when trick or treating. Why not get into the spirit of things, and get dressed up with them, you might earn yourself a few sweets too! Sadly, we have no article from PT Joe this month, he is busy training hard ready for the Nottingham half marathon, good luck Joe, from all of us here at the MHD! See you all in November where we may mention the C word now and then... How many days to go now??

I
t’s that time of year when I find myself ever so slightly obsessed with Strictly Come Dancing, and I expect I’m not alone... I don’t know if it’s the glitz and the glamour or the fact that Strictly has pretty much singlehandedly made ballroom dancing cool again, but either way my Saturday nights until Christmas will be sequin-clad and lycra-filled – and that’s just my husband. When Lisa, from Bury Ballroom invited Jeremy and I to come along to a lesson, we ‘cha cha cha’d’ right on over. The lessons are fun and informal with up-to-date music, Lisa is keen to shake off the old fashioned image ballroom once had. Instructors Lisa and Simon, started by giving us some tuition on a basic waltz steps and I can say, it’s harder than it looks! But it didn’t take long to get the hang

The Moreton Hall Directory
Classes at Bury Ballroom of it, and once we’d started, we were keen to keep on going. After our crash course in waltz, we sat out the rest of the lesson and marvelled at the skills of the other couples. After a quick warm up the couples got going on a couple of different dances (Rumba and Waltz) with Lisa and Simon demonstrating and offering advice if they were finding moves tricky. The classes are all-inclusive, with people at different levels, but everyone was smiling, laughing and generally just enjoying themselves. It’s a fantastic hobby to take up, especially if you’re looking for something to do with your partner. And guys, if you’re a little reluctant to get your groove on, Lisa’s partner Simon is an ex-rugby
player – so there’s no excuse! We spoke to Ray and his friend Sara who have been attending classes for 2 years with Lisa. Ray said “It’s a great way of keeping fit, and Lisa and Simon make it fun, I love it”. Beginners classes are £10 per couple and start again on 1st October at the Southgate Centre on Wednesdays from 7pm–7.45pm – you can join in at any time but the earlier you do the better, spaces are limited. Or if you’re not quite ready to start, you can join in January with new beginners classes on Mondays at the British Sugar Social Club from 7pm-7.45pm. To join or if you’d like more information, just give Lisa
a call on 07808 208814 or visit the website at www.buryballroom.co.uk.

vitality.
Director, The Self Centre
This month we look at what affects your children’s behaviour from a dietary perspective Although medicine classifies ADHD (attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder) as a brain disorder, parents and academics have speculated for decades that certain foods may have something to do with the typical symptoms of inattention, restlessness and over or hyperactivity. Now, the evidence is too compelling to ignore: study after study shows that certain foods—or agents within foods—may contribute to ADHD-related behaviours and that removing them from the diet might actually improve, or even reverse, these behaviours. The clever people at What Doctor’s Don’t Tell You (wddty.com) have identified five likely suspects lurking in your kids’ foods that could be making them hyperactive, based on the latest research, and what to avoid for a calmer child. Artificial colours and preservatives Synthetic food additives have long been suspected of causing or worsening hyperactive behaviour in children, and a well-designed study published in The Lancet in 2007 confirmed the link. The six-week trial involved giving healthy three-year-old and eight/nine-year-old children drinks containing additives—artificial colours and the preservative sodium benzoate—or a placebo drink, and monitoring their behaviour via parents, teachers and computer tests. The researchers discovered a significant increase in hyperactivity in both age groups of children during the weeks they consumed the additive-containing drinks. Other investigators—who pooled the results of 34 separate studies—estimate that 8 per cent of children with ADHD may have symptoms related to synthetic food colourings.
BPA in their urine at age five were more likely to display inattention and hyperactivity behaviours at age seven—even though their BPA levels were generally lower than the US average. Other research shows that exposure to BPA in the womb—at levels commonly found in the general population—could contribute to aggressive and hyperactive behaviour in early life. What to avoid: Canned and plastic-wrapped food, plastic water bottles, plastic food containers with a number 7 recycling code. Choose fresh, unprocessed foods whenever possible. Pesticides Organophosphate pesticides, which turn up in our food and drinking water, have been linked to a host of serious health problems and may be particularly toxic to developing brains. In a representative sample of US children, those with higher levels of organophosphate pesticide breakdown products in their urine were more likely to have ADHD than children with lower levels. Previous studies found associations between pesticide exposure and attention/behavioural problems, but this was the first to link the low levels of pesticide exposure seen in the general population to adverse health effects. “Each 10-fold increase in urinary concentration of organophosphate metabolites was associated with a 55 per cent to 72 per cent increase in the odds of ADHD,” said lead study author Maryse Bouchard, PhD, working at Harvard’s Department of Environmental Health at the time.
What to avoid: Sweets, colourful cereals, fizzy drinks, cake mixes. Forgo processed and packaged foods as much as possible in favour of fresh, whole foods; if you do buy packaged items, look for those that are free of artificial additives.
What to avoid: Non-organic produce, especially fruit and vegetables. If you can’t afford to go completely organic, check consumer watchdog Environmental Working Group’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce (www.ewg.org/foodnews) to work out which foods have the most and least pesticide residues.
Bisphenol A
Mercury
This ubiquitous plastics chemical is commonly found in canned food; it can leach from the linings of cans into the product inside. One US study tested 12 canned-food items marketed to children, including Campbell’s Disney Princess and Toy Story soups, and found detectable amounts of bisphenol A (BPA) in every single sample tested.
Another environmental pollutant that’s finding its way into food, mercury has also been associated with behavioural problems and ADHD.
Although the UK’s Food Standards Agency insists that the levels of BPA found in food are not a health concern, evidence suggests that even low doses can have a detrimental effect on childhood behaviour. A recent study found that children with higher concentrations of
A Boston University School of Public Health study published in 2012 discovered that children born to women with higher levels of mercury during pregnancy were more likely to exhibit signs of ADHD at age eight. On the flipside though, the researchers also found that the children whose mothers ate the most fish while pregnant—one of the main sources of mercury in the diet—were the least likely to show inattentive and hyperactive behaviours.
The remedies and advice suggested in this article are the personal opinion of the author. Please also inform your GP if you are planning to take any natural remedies and you are already on long term prescribed drugs.

health & beauty Fish is rich in omega-3 fatty acids—crucial for brain development and function—and a lack of them could be involved in ADHD. But as fish can also contain mercury, which is toxic to the brain, the trick is to eat only those types of fish low in mercury. Good choices for women and children that offer the greatest health benefits and lowest mercury levels include salmon (wild), herring, mussels, sardines, anchovies and trout, according to The Environmental Working Group. But mercury may also be hiding in processed foods and drinks containing the sweetener high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS); the contaminant can sneak in as a result of some manufacturing processes. Some researchers have even speculated that the introduction of HFCS into the food supply could be a contributory factor to the recent alarming rise in cases of ADHD and other developmental disorders like autism. What to avoid: Anything with HFCS or glucose corn syrup on the label, plus fish high in mercury like seabass, shark and swordfish, and even species moderately high in the contaminant, including haddock, hake and canned tuna. Go for low-mercury fish varieties or choose a high-quality fish-oil supplement to avoid other contaminants too. Allergens Even healthy foods have the potential to cause hyperactivity and behavioural problems in children if they’re sensitive to them. Dr Lidy Pelsser, of the ADHD Research Centre in the Netherlands, estimates that around two-thirds of ADHD cases are the result of hypersensitivity to foods. She tested the theory on 100 children with ADHD, aged between four and eight years, who were randomly assigned to five weeks of either a restricted elimination diet or a general healthy diet (as a control). By the end of the trial, 64 per cent of the children on the restricted diet reported a dramatic decrease in, or a complete reversal of, ADHD symptoms, while none of those on the general control diet reported any such improvement. What to avoid: Wheat, dairy, eggs, chocolate and oranges are key suspects. If eliminating them from your child’s diet doesn’t make much difference, try avoiding salicylates, found in apples, berries, courgettes, peppers and a variety of other foods. Many parents swear by the Feingold diet, which eliminates salicylates as well artificial colourings, flavourings and certain preservatives, and has proved useful for ADHD in some studies. Consider consulting a nutritional therapist experienced in allergy treatment to find the right diet for your child and also a Homeopath to heal the body of the effects of the allergens/toxins. You can contact Claudina Caaveiro our Naturopathic Nutritionist via her website www.healthyself.uk.com and Debbie Greenslade our Homeopath via her website www.buryhomeopaths.co.uk FREE 15 minute consultations available. This month Sue Lucente talks about High Blood Pressure ... High blood pressure is something that you may suffer from and not even know that you have it. Although, with today’s more frequent health checks, thankfully it is being diagnosed more often before it does real long term damage to our health. There may be many contributory factors to high blood pressure but fortunately there are many simple changes that can be made to help reduce it and keep it under control. Blood pressure is often affected by a persons weight. The size of your waistline can also play its part. If you are carrying too much weight around your middle it can increase your risk of developing high blood pressure and diabetes. Having high blood pressure can also increase your risk of heart disease and stroke.
Try to reduce your alcohol consumption and stay within government guidelines. Smoking is another factor that needs to be considered. Nicotine can raise your blood pressure for up to an hour after smoking, therefore smoking throughout the day may cause your blood pressure to remain high. Stress, something that is hard to avoid but try to learn to recognise the triggers that make you feel stressed, then consider how you might be able to reduce it or cope with it better. Exercise is not only a good way to relieve stress , it will also help you keep your body fit and healthy for the long term.
Diet and lifestyle can play an important part in helping to reduce your blood pressure. A good way to start is to keep a food diary even if only for a week , this will help you to pinpoint the areas of your diet that can be changed to improve your health. You may be surprised at exactly what and how much you are actually eating. Most of us do not give too much thought about what is in the food we are eating and most of us think that we are already eating healthily. When it comes to trying to reduce your blood pressure consuming less salt is a good place to start. Check the labels on the foods you buy, you may be surprised at how much salt is added to tinned and processed foods. Try cutting back on these and eat more fresh foods. Don’t add salt to food when cooking or once on the plate, your palate will soon get used to tasting the food rather than tasting the salt that you apply. Alcohol also plays a part in raising blood pressure. Binge drinking is particularly bad as your blood pressure will rise in response to your body trying to process a large quantity of alcohol.

Welcome to the 19th hole, a place for golf tips, reviews and everything golf related.
As the nights draw in and weather starts getting colder, Golfers begin to turn their focus to the improvements that need to be made to their games to lower that handicap when the warmer weather returns in the New Year.
A o
We would all like to be able to hit the driver as far as Rory Mcilroy, however for most of us this is just a dream. There are other areas of the game that are often over looked when wanting improvement, one is the short game. This is where the worlds’ top players will be very sharp, keen to keep their rounds going in the right direction.
Coaches Tip on Chipping - Think LEFT! Here are some simple, but easy to use chipping tips that will help you become a more confident chipper and hopefully lower your scores. Think LEFT in your set up.
1) Draw your LEFT foot back at address (creating a slightly open stance)
2) Place more weight on your LEFT foot (70%) and leave it there throughout the chipping action.
3) Lastly lean the hands and club handle
towards the target, your hands should be in line with your LEFT thigh.
The ball position will stay centred, however, the feet will be closer together to limit the amount of speed you can apply to the shot.
Spend some time practicing this shot and you will soon start to see an improvement in your chip shots. As I write this article we are just 10 days away from the start of the RYDER CUP.
I want to wish Captain Paul Mcginley and Team Europe the very best of luck at Gleneagles and I am hoping to be able to report on a great victory on home soil in our next edition.
Once the setup is complete you need to use the shoulders, arms and hands as one unit, making a pendulum type stroke very similar to your putting stroke.
In conclusion, I hope the weather stays fine and you all are able to get plenty of golf played. If not then I recommend following Team Europe at your own 19th hole in front of the TV.
For those Left handed Golfers, remember think RIGHT!

Prep time: 45 min Cook time: 1 hr 30 min Serves: 6-8
Method For the casserole: Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Season the chicken pieces well with salt and pepper. Heat the oil in a large ovenproof casserole over a medium heat and fry the chicken, in batches, until lightly browned all over then remove from the casserole. Put the casserole back on the heat and fry the chorizo, then add the onions, garlic and celery. Cook for 4–5 minutes over a medium to high heat, stirring regularly, until lightly coloured. Add the mushrooms and cook for 1 minute more, stirring. Return the chicken to the pot along with the carrots, leek, tomatoes, bay, thyme and stock. Season and bring to the boil then reduce to a simmer, cover with a lid and cook in the oven for 30 minutes. For the scones: Meanwhile, make the topping. In a bowl, mix the buttermilk with the egg and sage. In a separate bowl, sift together the flour and cayenne pepper. Stir in a good pinch of salt until everything is well mixed, then use your fingers to rub the butter in until it’s all crumbly. Gently mix in the cheese, then gradually add the buttermilk mixture to the dry ingredients, mixing first with a knife then with your hands to make a soft dough. If it seems a little dry, add another ½ tablespoon of buttermilk, or enough to make a soft, smooth dough that will leave the bowl clean. Roll out the dough as evenly as possible, to around 2.5cm thick – no less than this otherwise the scones won’t rise well. Using a 7cm fluted cutter, stamp out the scones. Gently re-roll the remaining dough and stamp out additional scones to use it all up. Remove the casserole from the oven, check the seasoning then adjust the thickness of the sauce with the cornflour and water. Now cover the top of the casserole with the scones. Put the dish back into the hot oven and cook until the scones are golden brown and cooked through, this should take about 30 minutes.

Moreton Hall’s Monthly Nature Watch by Woodland Ways
Miners in Moreton Hall Miners are usually people who crawl around in coal seams, sandwiched between layers of rock. In Moreton Hall, there are lots of leaf miners. These are the caterpillars of various moth species, who hatch out from an egg laid inside a leaf. Sandwiched between the top and bottom layers of the leaf, they crawl around mining out (and eating) the soft juicy leaf insides. And as well as only eating the juiciest part of the leaf, they are protected from practically all insect and bird predators. Many species of tree and shrub are used by leaf miners, as many gardeners will know. One species of leaf miner is the imaginatively named Horse Chestnut Leaf Miner, which was first found in the UK in 2002 and reached Moreton Hall roughly five years ago.
trees have been heavily used by the moth. Most horse chestnut leaves were heavily mined by early September, with most of our horse chestnut trees looking brown and autumnal many weeks before other trees. The leaf miner does not kill the trees, but tree growth is slowed with fewer and smaller conkers being produced The caterpillar pupates as the leaves fall off the trees, and overwinters in the dead leaf where it is safe from predators and insulated in piles of leaves. Next spring, the adult moths will crawl out and start laying again. In the early days, it was advised that every horse chestnut leaf was raked up and burnt, to stop the leaf miner spreading. This is now impractical, so we will be living with this fascinating little beast for decades to come.

SAINSBURYS
PARKING
By now you will have seen that the crossing to Sainsbury’s has been made safer due to the fact it should now be a pelican crossing which means traffic must give way and people will not be taking their lives in their hands trying to cross. It has been a long time coming and cost quite a few thousand pounds, thanks to Cllr T Beckwith for his donation from his County Locality budget. People ask me what is a locality budget, locality budget is a lump sum of money (your taxes) given to councillors to distribute in their areas to support and help organisations and start up groups with their finances. The County locality budget is the largest as it covers a larger area. The Borough budget is tiny in comparison and only covers one ward, I hope that explains things a bit.
Skyliner Way has suffered with parking problems since it was opened. At a Scrutiny meeting last week some ideas were put forward to attempt to rectify the issues concerned. The main problem is that workers cars parking along the side of the road from John Banks up to the Post Office area. One of the ideas put forward was to use the green bank and turn it into a layby, another idea was to put yellow lines along to prevent cars parking; however that would only cause the drivers to park in the residential area causing more problems. Suffolk County Highways and the Borough Council are getting together and working up the best way forward, sooner rather than later I hope.
RELIEF ROAD BOY RACERS At last the finance is in place and plans approved, the work should start soon. There are some people who think the new road won’t make any difference. I am sure it will and that it will also help to bring more jobs to the area with the expansion of the Industrial area. Suffolk county and St Edmunds development teams will encourage some of the Cambridge High Technical companies to come to Bury, rather than the large shopping units we seem to be getting now. Taylor Wimpey also hope to start on their 500 homes up by the Flying Fortress. I understand they can build them but the houses cannot be occupied until the relief road is completed. These houses will see the end of the housing development for Moreton Hall.

I have had several complaints regarding this, I have spoken with Sgt Hill our SNT officer and he assures me that the police are getting to grips with the problem. The police will attend on different nights and carry out checks on every car that turns up and hopefully the racers will get fed up with having to produce documents and having their cars checked for road worthiness. Any form of deterrent is welcome.
BURY IN BLOOM Very pleased to see that quite a few of our gardens and front areas were awarded commendations by the Bury in Bloom committee. I have walked most of the estate while taking my dog out and I am quite proud of our area, well done to all, nice to see so many taking pride in their own area. Planning is going well as is the funding for the Flying Fortress Round about, many thanks to Cllr Clive Springett for his hard work in organising this. There is to be a monument placed on the roundabout, as a fitting tribute to the American servicemen and women who were stationed on and around Rougham Airfield during WW11
Until next time, take care, Frank

Christ Church Moreton Hall October is very much the season of harvest. By now most of the wheat and barley crops will have been gathered in across our region and in other parts of the UK they will be concentrating on bringing in the apples, plums and pears. We often forget that East Anglia produces something like 90% of the food produced in the UK. We all depend on a comparatively small number of people who work very hard and to a high standard to make this happen. Jesus often used agricultural metaphors to explain profound spiritual truths. There are stories about the four different soils, the mustard seed, wheat and tares, and so on. Paul picks up this theme when he reminds us that the hard working farmer deserves the first share of any crop. But while Jesus and Paul understood fully the physical harvest, that was merely a starting point for them for they were concerned with the spiritual harvest. Using the metaphor of a garden, how would you describe your life? Is it one of perfectly ordered borders with finely manicured lawns, fruit trees without blight, producing ripe and luscious fruit? Or is there another picture? Is the garden of your life in need of radical attention? Should there be a liberal application of some form of weed-killer? Or, worse still, is the shed which contains your gardening tools so unvisited you have to cut through the brambles to get to it? Once there does liberal dose of oil has to be applied to the lock and hinges before the door will open? Once inside, are the tools that you need rusting away? It takes real discipline to find the time regularly to review your day. It also takes quite some effort to spend some of that

The Moreton Hall Directory
time in prayer. Also, it takes patience before you have that deep sense of God speaking to you and ordering your life for you. If our lives are gardens we can look at places where others have come in, trampled the grass, done damage to walls and fences, broken down plants, and ruined what we had intended to be beautiful. It takes a lot of work to restore those things and, of course, to find forgiveness and reconciliation with those who have done it. Equally, our lives should be places where we can invite other people in without fear of embarrassment so they can find the peace and tranquillity we take for granted. One of the nicest people I know always makes me feel at ease and at rest when I spend any length of time in her presence. Her wisdom gives me new strength for the day. We need more of these sorts of people in our lives. At this time of harvest, ask yourself the question, ‘If Father God is the farmer and I was one of His vines, what sort of fruit would He be harvesting from me?’ Would it be rich, ripe and good to taste, or sour, bitter or, worse still, so stunted it would not be worth harvesting? Or
perhaps you are one of those people who have nothing to produce at all. Now is a good time to take stock, reflect and do something about it. On the 5th of October we will celebrate Harvest at 10:30 AM, please come if you can. Don’t miss our Youth event on the 11th either great band and free Pizza for all. At Christ Church we will be going away as a church family for a few days in October to listen to the wise words of Bishop Sandy Millar and to build ourselves up spiritually. There will be wonderful events in November involving the young people and, of course, Shoebox, to help build ourselves up. If you want more details, please get in contact with us. With every good wish, Yours sincerely, Reverand Canon Jonathan Ford. Minister

www.musicalmedley.co.uk 5 years ago my daughter came home from school with a letter looking for parents to start an after school club. I have always enjoyed singing, dancing, taking part in productions from a small child right up to adult life so therefore Musical Medley Club commenced. Word spread and due to its success I started further clubs, my most recent being for Abbots Green Primary School children in September 2013. We practise each week learning routines to perform at an end of year show. We have so far staged productions in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 and our 2014 show Reach Up For the Stars at the apex featured over 100 children from various schools throughout the region. Therefore it is an honour to be asked to run an additional club for children age 9 plus in Bury St Edmunds, the venue being at Abbots Green. A meeting has been arranged with representatives from Suffolk County Council to discuss the planning applications for expansion of the Sebert Wood and Abbots Green Schools. We do not want the existing problems with parking to be made any worse. We currently have an issue with inconsiderate parents parking across dropped kerbs that should be providing a safe walking route for children. Local driveways are also being blocked causing unnecessary inconvenience for residents. A separate meeting has also been arranged in early October with the head of Economic Growth and Development at St Edmundsbury Borough Council to update us on plans for the new Eastern Relief Road. This will enable us to report the outcome at our Open Meeting/AGM on 12 November. Local Councillors will be attending the Open Meeting as well as representatives of both Suffolk County Council and St Edmundsbury Borough Council to explain how the planned developments for Moreton Hall and the Town will fit together and be coordinated, particularly the infrastructure improvements. Please come along to the Moreton Hall Community Centre at 7.30 pm on the 12 November. Presents of mind
by Andrew Southwood
I’m sure birthdays used to be stress free, happy times. The week before was spent counting the ‘sleeps’ and dreaming of outlandish presents (which I wouldn’t get) with butterflies of anticipation in my tummy. Sadly for me, that was probably last the case c1987, around the time when a Walkman or a Rubik’s Cube were at the top of my list. Now, birthdays come and go without much fuss. Obviously a card from the kids showing off their ‘neat’ writing and artistic skills, and even a handmade cake (hopefully with more than a little of my wife’s involvement), are lovely, but that will do me. I am not grumpy or depressed about it. The facts are simple. Life moves on, and our age creeps up faster than that immortal ivy on the garage wall. Even the children’s birthdays come and go so quickly that it’s hard to keep track. This month we’re preparing for my daughters 4th birthday. I swear there’s been some sort of arithmetic error, as she cannot be 4 years old already, can she?! However, photo’s of previous birthday cakes stand as evidence that 4 years have indeed passed. We’ve decided the hiring of a small village hall is a few quid well spent. I’m not sure there are many of us
46

that wouldn’t feel slightly queasy at the prospect of a dozen 4 year old running riot in our own house. Presents are always a tricky one. What do you buy a child that has everything? More to the point, what do you buy a child, whose parents really don’t want anymore ‘stuff’ to clutter up the house they are perpetually trying to reclaim from the toys? We tend to save the best ideas to offer out as suggestions to family and friends who are determined to buy ‘proper’ presents. This has the knock on effect that we, the parents, are often left with no sensible options, making our gifts even more difficult to think of.
Not that my young children really mind. The excitement of getting a present is enough, regardless of what it is. It’s a cliché, but they really are just as interested in the big empty boxes and bubble wrap, regardless of the actual contents. And all this comes only a few short weeks before the world goes completely mad and we fight a losing battle to stop our conservatory from becoming a mixture of a tornado hit toy shop and a dry recycling waste transfer station. The dreaded winter festivities are now well and truly on the radar.

SILKWORK EXHIBITION
home & lifestyle
VENUE NEEDED to display late creators artwork
This extensive range of artwork created by the late John Kirk, was planned to be exhibited by his family in aid of charity later this month, but sadly they need a new venue as the planned exhibition venue cancelled. If you can help in any way please contact John or Liz on 01284 764483 to discuss. “It is something that, until you see it, cannot be explained, but the talent behind these artworks is truly amazing.” Sally @ The MHD About the Silkwork Creator JOHN A W KIRK When John and his wife moved to Suffolk to be with his son, he was already ill. In January 1995 his family asked him to make a recording about his pictures, how he got started and how he felt about them. Sadly, John passed away in St Nicholas’ Hospice on 27th February 1995. The following is a transcript of the video he made for his family. ‘For those of you who are uninitiated, you are watching an old man indulging in his favourite hobby, or I should say, an old man indulging in his only hobby. I don’t know what I do, what it is called, or whether there is an official name for it it is not tapestry - it is not embroidery - it is just a space that I fill up with different coloured silks and it all started quite by accident! It is almost fifty years ago since I started. At that time, the “in gear” for all the young things was a Hungarian blouse, a net blouse covered in embroidery. One of our girls was trying to embroider a rose onto one, but she was having trouble doing it and was getting quite upset. I used to dabble a bit with a paint box so this individual thought it was only the same colours, different material, it should not be too difficult, so I volunteered my services. You can imagine the response to that - a mere male offering to do it. They let me have a go and much to everyone’s surprise it turned out looking like a rose. That gave the wife ideas and she bought some cushion covers and some transfers of some old sailing ships. Sailing ships were one of my favourite things to draw when I was at school and I did not like the drawing on the transfers they were out of proportion, but I used them until I got one that was really bad, so I decided to draw my own. I finished up drawing three or four of these and then decided to do something else - a picture of a parrot from an Australian bird book.
That turned out all right, so I did one or two parrots, then one or two eagles which my mother used as chair backs. My next master-piece was a tablecloth, which I still have upstairs - much the worse for wear. Having done all that and looking for fresh fields, I decided to try a picture, everything else had turned out all right, so I did, and that’s how it started. If our girl had not had trouble doing that rose I might never have started at all. I was having a count up with my son the other night and I don’t know whether it was 79 or 80 we got to that I have done all together. I have still got between 40 and 50 here. It is an expensive hobby, it is time consuming, but what I like about it, it’s a selfish hobby - I can please myself what I do and if anyone else doesn’t like it they know what they can do. I think the finest thing about it is you can sit doing it and the world goes away, I can lose myself and all my troubles, and at the end of the day you can look back at it and get a great feeling of satisfaction. Occasionally I get a twang of disappointment over some little bits of the picture that do not come up to expectations, but still I have not had too many disappointments. I have enjoyed every bit of it, its given me a lot of enjoyment and I hope the results bring a lot of pleasure to a lot of people. I have had all the accolades it’s possible to have, which I don’t really look for, a little bit of appreciation perhaps, but as I say it’s a selfish hobby, if it pleases me it doesn’t matter about anybody else. Well that’s about it, I hope what you are going to see you will enjoy.” Being able to lose himself and all his troubles when working on his pictures was the main way John was able to cope so bravely with his illness.
Gardening Tips by Paul Clarke 54
The Moreton Hall Directory
Welcome to Gardening Tips a monthly feature providing you with hints and ideas of what to do each month in your garden. Along with a list of jobs that will enable you to enjoy and maintain your garden I will also feature a plant of the month. I have been a gardener for many years and run a small business called Pauls Garden Services.

Pauls Jobs for the Month Flower Garden l Plant spring bulbs. The earlier you plant bulbs the better, for the soil is still warm and getting the roots established before the weather closes in will help them fight wet and rot . Think of buying just a few varieties in large numbers. Some of the Spring bulbs to consider are daffodils, hyacinths, crocuses, snowdrops, fritillaries and lilies. l Cut back all of the tall shrubs such as lavatera and buddleia. l Now is the time to take hardwood cuttings from buddleia, flowering currants and forsythia l Keep deadheading dahlias l Clear old leaves from hostas l This is a good time to take fuchsia cuttings. Cut them around 15cm from the shoot tip then make a clean cut just below a leaf joint. Trim away the lowest leaves and insert several cuttings around the edge of a pot. Keep at a temperature of around 18-20c.
Vegetable and Fruit Garden l Create new strawberry beds and plant young strawberry plants raised from runners. l In the vegetable plot you can now plant spring cabbage and overwintering onion sets. l Harvest your final crop of beetroot and store in a cool dark location.

THE
MON TH – Asters
et
PA U L S P L A N T
Asters come in a wide range of colours, including pink, purple, magenta and red. They grow well in flower beds and rock gardens. They grow well in full sunlight or partial shade. Asters will bloom in autumn and should be cut back in late winter once all of the foliage has died. Water the soil well throughout the following summer and asters will continue to bloom annually. All asters are best divided in spring as new growth starts. Lift and then use two back-to-back forks to split the clump. Discard old woody pieces.
October gave a party, the leaves by hundreds came The Chestnuts , Oaks and Maples and leaves of every name The sunshine spread a carpet and everything was grand Miss Weather led the dancing Professor Wind the band George Cooper Octobers Party
General Maintenance l Forget the gym and get yourself a good workout by raking and sweeping fallen leaves. Even on the coolest of days this will work up a sweat . Leafs are great for composting and if you don’t have a compost bin put them in a bin bag with a few holes in it and next year you will have some valuable leaf mould to feed your plants.
Doing The Jobs You Don’t Have Time For?
l A nice mucky job to do if you have a pond is to remove all of the black sludge that forms at the bottom. It is worth doing to improve the oxygen in the water. Pile the rubbish on the side of the pond to allow any wildlife the chance to return to the water before adding it to the compost. l Continue to tidy your garden borders by removing dead flower stems and weeds .
Lawn Maintenance l By the end of the month you will probably have given your lawn its final cut of the year. After this it is a good time to give the grass a good scarifying with a lawn rake to pull out dead grass and moss. l This is a good time to apply an autumn fertiliser to improve root growth.

What’s been happening at... Abbots Green Community Primary School We have had a great start to the new school year at Abbots Green! We greeted new families into the school, and welcomed back familiar faces after their summer break. Our second Year 4 class opened in September with Miss Hammond as class teacher. Our new class is called ‘Water Lily Class’ continuing with our floral theme. As ever, there are lots of new and exciting things already happening at the school. The school library is in the process of being updated, and this week the mobile library also arrived at the school. Children were able to visit the mobile library and each child selected two books for their classroom ‘Book Corners.’
Children opting for a “Pick & Mix” meal choose their own food items from a selection of sandwiches; fruits/vegetables; savouries and desserts. By choosing one item from each food category the children create their own healthy and nutritious meal. It has been a real hit so far!

Lunchtimes have had a complete makeover with the introduction of ‘Pick & Mix’ lunches. As well as a hot meal freshly prepared on the school premises, the school’s catering team also offer a cold meal option to the children every day.
Our school clubs are also underway as we welcomed back ‘Musical Medley’ to the school this week. Children attending Musical Medley Club are beginning to learn songs from the movie ‘Frozen’ in preparation for their show ‘It’s a Thriller’ to be held at The Apex next Summer. And....when some of the children were asked what they like best about Abbots Green Leah said “I enjoy all the art work we get to do in school” Ethan added ”I love PE at Abbots Green, we get to use different equipment.” Our Forest Schools sessions are a favourite with Florence who enjoys exploring. Finally Emily concluded “I love all the teachers! They help us to learn.”

WHAT’S ON IN OCTOBER? Kast Off Kinks
T.Rextasy
Thursday 9th October at 8pm I Love to Boogie with T.Rextasy In 1973 a record was released which would bridge the generation gap and become a rock anthem to both young and old - 20th Century Boy by T.Rex. Marc Bolan, with his band T.Rex, was one of the most flamboyant and charismatic of the original glam rock era. In 1976, Marc Bolan’s T.Rex released another top 20 record that has since become one of the most memorable and everlasting signature tunes - I Love to Boogie. T.Rextasy have now been performing around the world for over 20 years, a career that ironically out lives Marc’s very own T.Rex. The band is now accepted as the world’s only official live tribute band dedicated to Marc Bolan & T.Rex, and the only band endorsed and approved by Marc Bolan’s family, estate, original exmembers of T.Rex, and Bolan’s catalogue management.
Saturday 11th October 7.30pm The Kast off Kinks are former members of The Kinks who got together to play for Kinks Fan Club meetings and Charity events over 18 years ago. The current line-up decided to take the band to the fans across the country. They are: The original drummer Mick Avory, who played on all the classic hits from 1964-1984. Jim Rodford, bass (1978-1996) and also known for Argent and the current Zombies. Ian Gibbons, keyboards (19791996), also currently still working with Ray Davies. Dave Clarke, vocals & guitar, previously with The Beach Boys and the Noel Redding band. They play all the hits from the 60s, 70s & 80s including You Really Got Me, Tired of Waiting, Dead End Street, Sunny Afternoon, Autumn Almanac, Lola, Ape Man, Come Dancing, All of the Day & All of the Night and many more! Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice with 2 actors
A witty and inventive new adaptation of one of the most loved novels of all time, calling on two actors to play 21 characters and cramming 400 pages of action into just two hours.
It stars some of the finest actor-musicians in the UK and was endorsed as Britain’s most popular Buddy Holly act when the boys guested on BBC One’s The One and Only.
After a hugely successful run at the Theatre Royal last Autumn, we are thrilled to welcome back Two Bit Classics on their 2014 national tour. A welcome second chance to see this highly praised show.

GONE GIRL
Starring Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, Neil Patrick Harris, Emily Ratajkowski
Ben Affleck is suspected of murdering his wife in this dark, complex thriller from ‘Se7en’ director David Fincher. When Amy Dunne (Rosamund Pike) disappears on her fifth wedding anniversary, her adoring husband Nick (Ben Affleck) is naturally distraught. Adopting a high public profile, he launches a massive search for his ‘Amazing Amy’. But under intense media and police scrutiny, cracks begin to appear in Nick’s portrayal of his perfect marriage. As his lies unravel, he finds himself cast as the prime suspect! Adapted from her own bestseller by Gillian Flynn, this is a gripping, twisty-turny psychological thriller for an age in which such cases are played out in the unforgiving glare of the media spotlight. Neil Patrick Harris leads the supporting cast as Amy’s creepy ex-boyfriend. Making his eagerly anticipated return to movies from TV’s acclaimed ‘House of Cards’ is David Fincher, Oscar-nominated director of ‘The Social Network’, ‘Fight Club’ and ‘Se7en’.

MRS BROWN’S BOYS D’MOVIE Feisty matriarch Agnes Brown (Brendan O’Carroll) runs a fruit and vegetable stall in Dublin’s historic Moore Street Market. It’s been in her family for generations and she hopes eventually to pass it to daughter Cathy (Jennifer Gibney). Then she receives a vast tax bill. Maria (Fiona O’Carroll) and Rory (Rory Cowan) embark on a foolhardy plan to raise the cash by swimming the channel. Meanwhile, our potty-mouthed heroine learns that she’s not the only one to have her livelihood and heritage threatened. A dastardly developer wants to bulldoze the entire market. Now Agnes must take on the Irish establishment - with a little help from Buster Brady’s troop of blind trainee Ninjas, an alcoholic solicitor, and a barrister with Tourette’s Syndrome! This uproarious spin-off from Brendan O’Carroll’s much-loved, BAFTA-winning TV comedy sensation was filmed in authentic Dublin locations.

ART OFFICIAL AGE - PRINCE
Few artists have created a body of work as rich and varied as Prince. During the ‘80s, he emerged as one of the most singular talents of the rock & roll era, capable of seamlessly tying together pop, funk, folk, and rock. Not only did he release a series of groundbreaking albums; he toured frequently, produced albums and wrote songs for many other artists, and recorded hundreds of songs that still lie unreleased in his vaults. With each album he released, Prince has shown remarkable stylistic...

We at the centre will be doing a Halloween disco for kids and adults, with kids games starting at 6:30pm and the music starting at 8pm for all! Free entry to get in, with prizes to be won for the best dressed etc! We’re doing our Halloween Party on 1st November this year, so you can dust off your trick or treating costumes and dance off those sugar highs… But before that, we have lots going on in October! Starting with Saturday Night Bingo on October 4th, which starts at 7pm with games for kids, then games for adults (playing for cash!). On Friday 2nd October we have Soul Scene playing a mix of 60s/70s/80s classics in the hall! It’s £5 to get in, with concessions for groups in multiples of 5! If you’d like to buy tickets in advance, check out their website at http://www. soulscenesuff.co.uk! The Saturday after that we have the first of what we hope to be many live music nights presented by the centre! This is Saturday 11th October, and we’ve got the dynamic 4 piece band Jukebox Fury to play from 8:30pm on the night. They’ll play a vast set of music from all decades, sure to have you on your feet all night! There is an entrance fee of £2 which will go to the chairman’s charity, Clic Sargent, a charity dedicated to helping children and young people with cancer. Check out Jukebox Fury’s website on http://www. jukeboxfuryband.com/ - they are a brilliant band who do loads of gigs in the East Anglian region, well worth checking out! On October 18th we’re hosting another one of our darts tournaments in the clubroom, which is £5 to enter with all proceeds going towards the prize fund!
Looking further ahead to Christmas we have sold out on one of our nights, the 20th December, but still have spaces available for the Friday 19th December which for £29.95 per person, will give you a homemade 3 course Christmas dinner, live band Hard to Handle who are guaranteed to get you on the dance floor, an arrival drink and table decorations (which will definitely comprise lots of rocket balloons for you to whizz round the room)! We are also putting on 2 nights on the 12th & 13th December that offer a disco, arrival drink, fresh seasonal buffet and of course, lots of Christmas novelties! This is for £14.95 per head –if you’re interested in any of our nights, please call Clare on 01284 763402! Further ahead to November we have some exciting events coming up – we’ve got the ‘Family Fortunes’ quiz night on Saturday 8th November which is the normal format for our quizzes - £1 to enter with entry money going towards the cash jackpot at the end! Then we have on the 15th November our ‘Club Classics’ night with Phil the Rhythm, playing all those 90s classics that you love! Free entry, of course! At the centre, we have regular groups that book with us meaning we’re pretty full for most of the week, but we have had a spot open up for a regular booking on Wednesday evenings if you have a group that you would like to bring to the Moreton Hall! Just phone Kerrie on 01284 763402 if you’re interested, we offer very competitive prices and a great service and we’re always happy to hear from you. Hope to see you all soon!
