EDITOR’S LETTER

october

WELCOME TO THE

ISSUE

Hello and welcome to the October issue of the Moreton Hall Directory. It’s the spooky month of Halloween! So we have a few things in the magazine this month with that in mind. Phil visited the Bury St Edmunds bat rescue centre and we’re pleased to say he is now ‘quite the expert’ on bats. We have some pumpkin based recipes in case you want to use any left over fillings. And some great money saving advice on Halloween costumes and treats. I’m going to up my pumpkin game this year, because usually it looks a little sorry for itself and gets more sympathy than screams! Remember to be safe though, and warn your kids of the dangers of standing too close to lit pumpkins on doorsteps with their flowing cloaks and costumes, they can often be highly flammable. And don’t forget, not everyone likes Halloween, it can be quite intimidating to have a bunch of costume clad people turn up at your door! It may be time to get the heating on this month, but at least we can enjoy the cosy nights in , we’ll see you in November!

Dog walkers As you can see in the photo, these are a group of regular dog walkers, every day they walk their dogs along to 10 Acre Field and around it. They approached me and asked me to put yet another piece in the directory regarding dog mess, they say that they are fed up cleaning up after other peoples dogs. I agree with them, why should they have to clear up after other people’s dog’s mess. Ten Acre field is a designated dog walker’s field but that does not mean you can let dog’s mess and not pick it up, there is a large bin at the entrance to the field and its dual purpose for rubbish and dog foul so you don’t even have to think about which bin to use. I believe the worst offenders are the joggers with their earphones on and their dog about forty metres behind them, how can they see what their dogs are doing. So come on all you irresponsible dog lovers do your bit CLEAN UP AFTER YOUR DOG or keep it in your garden. Well done to Barrie and the other ten o’clock walkers. Hot off the press! I have just been notified that some of the mess on the football field is that of foxes, it would appear that we have a few foxes in the area, they use that area quite often. 08 | OCTOBER 2015

FUN DAY

It was good to see that the Community Club were able to go ahead with their fun day. There were a lot of people in attendance and fun was had by all, donkey rides, stalls of every description. Craft displays and many other exciting events, not forgetting the BBQ. Well done the club committee who work hard every year to put the fun day on.

YOUTH CLUB NEWS The club reopened again after the summer recess, first night was the re-registration of members as most of the older kids have moved on to new schools, new friends and other activities. A good night was had by all and at the reduced cost of only £1 per head it was good value. Should you want to give your kids a bit of free time in a safe environment why not bring them along, we are open Tuesday night from 6.30 until 8.30pm and we meet in the youth centre. New helpers always welcome.

SCAMS

There seems to be a lot of scams going around, here are some I have taken from Trading Standards. While compiling this I have heard on the local news that a firm in Suffolk has just lost £1 million pound in an online phone banking scam. Other scams are: • Email alert pretending to be from “Amazon UK” saying a transaction could not be completed, please resubmit your payment via http://links.govdelivery.com. If you get this do not reply, contact Amazon direct. • IPhone for £1 - yes another scam leave it alone. • Vehicle Scams: emails intended to con innocent buyers have been doubled, check before you buy or go to garagewire.co.uk/news/sharp-rise-in-online-usedvehicle-scam/> There are several more and I will add a few each week but meanwhile take care in any financial transaction.

REPORTING HIGHWAY PROBLEMS

Roads and paths are Suffolk county domain so contact them on http:www.suffolk.gov.uk/ and click on “report” then follow the prompt. Fields, green areas, hedges, play areas and trees including dog bins and waste bins fall under St. Edmundsborough council, you can ring 01284 763233. As it’s coming up to winter you will need your Grit Bins sorted, that would be Bury St. Edmunds Town Council so call 01284 725111.

Until next time, take care, Frank Warby OCTOBER 2015 | 09

W hat’s been happening at...

ABBOTS GREEN Community Primary School We have had an amazing start to the new school year at Abbots Green!

The school building works were completed over the summer holidays and as schools in Bury St Edmunds moved to the two-tier system we were able to open our doors for the first time to Year 5 children. We were delighted to welcome back the children after their summer break, and there was a genuine buzz of excitement amongst them regarding the changes to our school and the new opportunities this brings. We have also been extremely pleased to welcome new children and their families to Abbots Green in our Nursery, Reception Classes and across other year groups within the school. We now have over 360 children registered at Abbots Green! New staff joining the school have commented on the wonderful, bright and airy environment with Mr Payne, one of our new Year 5 teachers, commenting: “It is lovely to join an ever-growing family!” As well as our new building we have embarked on our new whole school project for this term entitled “Street Feast.” The children in each class have

been working hard to research a country and to extend their learning about different foods. Each class has already produced some wonderful displays of food across the school. Orchid Class have tasted paella, Sunflower Class have made their own pasta and Water Lily Class have sampled the culinary delights of Mexico. There is a whole range of exciting activities and opportunities planned to take place across the term. Our Year 5 children made their speeches in Assembly in a bid to become Team Captains and children across the school voted for their chosen candidate. We have also welcomed our first visitor into school this term, Philip Daws – the Reading Champion for the Bury Schools Partnership. Mr Daws led the Whole School Assembly and then spent the morning visiting individual classes across the school to promote reading and to talk with the children. It’s great to be back!

LOCAL NEWS

Dear reader,

“Know the symptoms and get help fast” A father-of-one has urged other young people to get medical treatment fast if they experience any of the symptoms of stroke after suffering a stroke caused by a clot on the brainstem at the age of just 35. Ricky Byam, who lives in Newton near Sudbury, slumped at the wheel and starting vomiting while on his way to work on Monday 29 June. He was transferred to West Suffolk Hospital, where specialists carried out CT and MRI scans before telling him he had suffered a stroke. Ricky, who is married to Jo and has a four-year-old son called Alfie, is now keen to share his story to raise awareness that strokes can happen at any age. It comes after the hospital treated ten patients under the age of 50 who had suffered strokes in the past few months. “The Thursday before my stroke, I felt a pain behind my eye and pins and needles down my left side but didn’t think too much of it as I am a young man who has always been fit and healthy,” said Ricky. “Four days later I slumped over on my way to work. Fortunately it was early in the morning so there wasn’t much traffic about – otherwise I could have killed myself or someone else. “It was pretty scary as I couldn’t move my left arm or leg. I was in shock when I was told I’d had a stroke as you don’t hear much about them happening in young people.” Ricky spent four days in hospital and

is now receiving ongoing rehabilitation from the early stroke discharge team. With their help, he has rebuilt his strength and – although he still has problems with headaches, fatigue, his short-term memory and has lost the hearing in his left ear– is hoping to gradually return to work as a self-employed carpenter within the next few weeks. “We have been through some real lows over the past couple of months,” added Ricky. “But I’m thankful that my stroke was fairly mild compared with some. “We still don’t really know what caused it, but I am having tests at the moment so we can try and find out and hopefully stop it from happening again.” Strokes in younger patients often have different causes to those in older people, and can include defects or tears in the walls of the arteries, inflammation of the artery walls, blood disorders or defects in the heart and irregular heart rhythms. Often people are unaware that they may have these conditions. Smoking, obesity, the use of illicit drugs and physical inactivity or severe physical exertion can also be contributory factors. Dr Sajid Alam, consultant in stroke medicine at the hospital, said: “Although most people associate strokes as a disease of older people, they can happen at any age. Approximately 5-8% of our patients are under the age of 50, which is why it is so important that people are aware of symptoms.

If you have any questions about fundraising, any of the events mentioned above or how you can help the hospital, please contact fundraising@wsh.nhs.uk or call 01284 712952 12 | OCTOBER 2015

T

he MHRA is now beginning it’s sixth year. Since its formation we have seen steady growth in the number of residents in Moreton Hall with - now - a total of over 8,000. Further growth is coming soon with some 6000 new houses planned for Bury, of which 500 will be built in Moreton Hall.

3. welcoming the new Upper County School - with local Councillors - while seeking to ensure that likely problems of parking/drop-off are assessed and dealt with throughout the building stages.

All this development gives added weight to the activities of the MHRA. In the past year the Association has put forward views on; 1. the need to develop the infrastructure particularly roads, of which one major example is the new llink road between our locality and J45 of the A14;

5. together with local Councillors and, in particular residents from close proximity, there was successful opposition to proposals to build a massive Waste Transfer Facility at Rougham Hill. Such a development would have had considerable adverse implications for traffic and the environment;

2. other road infrastructure problems including the need for early publication of Burywide provisions from the expected 10,000 plus extra vehicles arising from new developments;

There were several other issues dealt with during the year. All those attending (people living or working in Moreton Hall) will be able to question the speakers and members of the MHRA

4. the increasing problems of parking in Moreton Hall, particularly in school-time in Sebert Road (adjacent to the School), at the Western end of Symonds Road, and parking in general;

Barbastelle bats in Moreton Hall

B

arbastelle bats have a pugnacious appearance with their ears joined together across the top of their head and a rather predatory face. They are medium sized for a bat, and feed on flying insects. Unlike most bats, barbastelles fly deep withn woodland, manoevering carefully between trees where other bats can’t. They also roost almost exclusively in trees, often just under a flap of loose bark. Barbastelle bats are also one of Britain’s rarest mammals, with breeding sites very scarce indeed.

in Pond Covert, Sebert Road, during a training session for up and coming bat surveyors. The third record was this August, found by staff at Brewer’s Decorator’s Merchant’s in one of our Industrial Estates. The Brewer’s staff recognised that it looked poorly, and rang Bury Bat Rescue, who arrived within minutes to care for her. She was very underweight but is being fed by Batgirl and Raisin and will be released when fit. You can see a video of the barbastelle eating a mealworm on the twitter site @BSEbatrescue.

There have been three records of this species in Moreton Hall. The first was a few decades ago, when one was recorded in the chalk caves which run beneath Natterer’s Wood, Mount Road.. These caves are private, and not managed by Woodland Ways. The second record was in 2011, when one was recorded on a bat detector circling the pond

There’s a well-known barbastelle colony at Ickworth Park, using the woods and parkland there. Have the Moreton Hall barbastelle bats wandered from there, only about 3 miles away in a straight line measurement? Or is there another, closer colony, perhaps in the slightly closer Rougham Park or in Moreton Hall itself?

Join us at Woodland Ways... Why not join in with a Woodland Ways work party to help improve the Moreton Hall woods? No experience is needed and all are welcome; we’ll show you what to do. HEALTH & BEAUTY Sue Smith

Charity welcomes new fundraising manager West Suffolk Hospital Charity has appointed Sue Smith as their new Fundraising Manager. Sue comes to the charity with a wealth of fundraising experience, as a leading figure of the Suffolk Breakthrough Breast Cancer which recently announced it had broken the £1 million mark to aid the fight against breast cancer. Sue, who lives in Bury St Edmunds and has been running her own business for the past seven years, was also an integral part in the Sir Bobby Robson Breakthrough Auction and Ball which raised more than £350,000 last year. She said: “I am really looking forward to starting at West Suffolk Hospital Charity. Fundraising is my passion and this is my local hospital so it is a perfect fit.

“I can’t wait to meet everyone around the hospital and help the charity continue to support all the fantastic work being done in every ward and department - not to mention the generous local community across West Suffolk.” Sue will be taking over from Dave Gooderham who is moving across to become the Charity’s new communications manager as well as joining the communications team at the hospital.

HEALTH & BEAUTY

Be breast aware Specialist nurses from West Suffolk Hospital are using this year’s breast cancer awareness month to remind women to check themselves regularly and seek medical help if they notice any changes.

Andrea Pryor, who works at the hospital’s breast unit, has advised women to examine their breasts every month so that any problems can be picked up quickly, in turn increasing the chance that treatment will be successful. The call comes during this year’s awareness month, which encourages people from across the globe to wear pink while raising both awareness of the symptoms of breast cancer and funds for further research. Andrea said: “Around 50,000 women in the UK – one in every eight – are diagnosed with breast cancer annually, with the risk increasing with age. This is why it is so important that women examine themselves regularly so that they know what is normal for them. They should book an appointment with their GP if they notice any lumps, changes in shape, dimples or discharge from their nipples. Anyone who does notice anything different should try not to panic – there are lots of harmless problems which can arise in breasts, so a change doesn’t necessarily mean cancer.” GPs may refer patients to the hospital’s breast unit where, following a consultation with dedicated breast surgeons, further investigations such as a mammogram, ultrasounds and biopsies, can be carried out. If a diagnosis is confirmed, the breast care team will discuss all of the options with the patient before drawing up a specially tailored treatment plan, which could include surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and hormone therapy. “Our staff are here to support you from your initial diagnosis to the time you are discharged from our care,” said Andrea. “As well as discussing all of the treatment options with you and answering any questions you may have, we can also offer services such as prosthesis and bra fitting, wound advice and information about reconstruction. We will also be able to put you and your family in touch with support groups who may be able to offer further help.” The NHS National Breast Screening programme invites all women who are registered with a GP and aged between 47 and 70 for breast screening every three years. Those aged over 70 can self-refer. Anyone who notices any changes in their breasts between mammograms should talk to their GP. For further information, contact Breast Cancer Care on 0808 800 6000 or Macmillan Cancer Support on 0808 808 0000. 18 | OCTOBER 2015

GD Estates a family run independent lettings agent is delighted to announce the addition of a new staff member, Mandy Finlayson. Mandy brings with her a wealth of administration experience and together with a thorough knowledge of the local area. Tracey Nunn, Lettings Director at GD Estates said: ‘Due to the continual increase of our property portfolio, and our Mandy Finlay son determination to maintain our high levels of customer service, we felt that it was necessary to bring in a further full-time member of staff to maintain our high standards. We are fortunate that a large proportion of our new business is via existing landlord referrals which is very encouraging and demonstrates that we offer a consistent and valued long term service. ‘As an ARLA qualified lettings agent, with several ARLA qualified staff, we are proud of our independent status and expertise. Focusing purely on lettings, we don’t get distracted by offering wider services, which is why our service is second to none, as it is what we do and we do it very well! Looking to the future, we have built a strong reputation in this market and will continue to retain our independent status with a desire to build long term relationships, with no hidden charges. HEALTH & BEAUTY

Meet our new Columnist....

Nicola Delglyn Osteomyologist Physical & Nutritional Therapy At this time of year I frequently get

asked whether there is anything you can eat to prevent getting a cold or the flu and what you can eat to help ease the symptoms. Both the common cold and the flu are viruses that will not be put off by your blood tasting funny or eating a lot of garlic. However, your immune system can be boosted to be as strong as possible to help fight off those little blighters or lessen the blow of the symptoms if you are unfortunate enough to be caught out.

Immune boosting foods to fit into our diet

Eating nutritious foods daily is a great way to boost your immune system all year around, however in the autumn and winter we sometimes need a bit of a boost. Here are some great natural food ideas to fit into your daily diet: • mushrooms • tuna • salmon • garlic • onions • citrus fruit • red peppers • homemade chicken stock • oats • fermented foods such as kefir, sauerkraut, yoghurt • pumpkin seeds • sunflower seeds • Brazil nuts • green leafy vegetables • local honey • almonds • strawberries • sweet potatoes • carrots • squash • pumpkin • egg yolks and cantaloupe melon • turkey Have a look here at some of the remarkable properties of a few of my favourite foods and how they can help boost the immune system. You can learn more about all these fabulous foods, how best to prepare foods to keep as much nutritional content and other health and fitness related topics on my website ...

Treatments to beat pain for www.delglynclininc.co.uk. First on my list is the humble mushroom, a fabulous food to eat and is often overlooked as a health food. Mushrooms have two essential components for the cold and flu season, which are selenium and beta-glucan. Selenium helps your white blood cells to produce cytokines that fight illness and is great for heart health. Beta-glucan is an antimicrobial fibre that helps activate cells that seek out and destroy infections, it helps to lower cholesterol too. How fantastic is that?! At the moment Porcini and Shiitake are my seasonal choice. As like many of you, I exercise regularly, so I need to eat a variety of good natural foods including enough good protein. Salmon is next on my list. We all know how beneficial salmon is in our diets but are you eating enough in the winter months to help your body fight infection? Most people worldwide are deficient in vitamin D and the lower your vitamin D, the more likely you are to report a respiratory infection than if your vitamin D level is higher. I take a vitamin D supplement every day and eat salmon at least once a week. Salmon is an easy way to ensure you are getting vitamin D in your diet, especially during the winter months. Nice and easy are pumpkin seeds and a great addition, sprinkled over soups, cereals, vegetables or salads. Adding extra crunch they are a strong source of zinc, which is critical for the immune system as it boosts white blood cells that attack bacteria and viruses like flu or cold. If you add in sunflower seeds and almonds, you get one of the best

HEALTH & BEAUTY

Physical & Nutritional Therapy adults, children & athletes natural sources of vitamin E too. Vitamin E is an antioxidant that protects cell walls from damage, and one single ounce contains 30% of your RDA. Vitamin E may also be significant in reducing the production of phlegm. In 2003 there was a study performed in Scotland that suggested that people with diets high in vitamins C and E were more able to fight viruses effectively. My absolute favourite are leafy vegetables! My family will tell you I just love my veggies with the exception of aubaugine – not too keen on that one. There is absolutely no doubt that leafy greens are higher in nutrients the darker they are. So when you are preparing your meals for improving your defenses choose spinach, kale and rocket for example, over the lighter coloured varieties. Dark green vegetables provide us with folic acid, vitamin A, B-complex, vitamin C, vitamin K, copper and iron. In addition, they contain small amounts of some other essential minerals and electrolytes such as calcium, iron, potassium, manganese, and phosphorus, everything your body needs to stay strong and healthy. Berries especially blueberries are a great for your autumn and winter diet, in fact any berries in your diet will increase the concentration of antioxidants to help fight off cold and flu viruses. When tested against other foods blueberries were found to have more antioxidants than 40 other fruit and vegetables. Just ½ a cup of raw berries a day could help you stay healthy. Fresh berries are best, so stock up during the summer and pop them in the freezer or buy the frozen variety, which are better than canned.

The only fruit that contains more anti-oxidants than blueberries and is a great source of vitamin C is the Goji berry. Try to have a portion of these everyday as well. You need fewer to get the same dose and they are kept dried so are very convenient. Finally garlic, which is one of the richest sources of potassium, iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese, zinc, and selenium. It is also a great source of Allicin, which has anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal properties. In a British study people taking a supplement of Allicin suffered 46% fewer colds and flu. So you literally can stink out sickness, and maybe even your work colleagues too if you’re not careful! I recommend using fresh garlic rather than ground or dried garlic. If you’re not keen on garlic or think you may offend too many work colleagues with the odour, you could always choose the lowly onion instead. Onions contain Allicin, vitamin C, vitamin B-complex and manganese, which are great antioxidants with anti-inflammatory. Onions are also a good source of chromium, a trace mineral that helps tissue cells respond appropriately to insulin levels in the blood. Add them to stews, soups, gravy, bolognaise, the opportunities are endless or eat them raw or lightly sautéed. Food can be used as a great healer however it is always a good idea to speak with your GP about your plans and it should not be used instead of the flu vaccine if you have been prescribed it.

Swimming Fool BY ANDREW SOUTHWOOD

S

ome of you may recall that I have previously revealed swimming is not my strong point. It sits somewhere between Dressage and Ballet in my relatively small list of sports I can’t really do. I have been told more than once that working outside of your comfort zone and facing your weaknesses full on is good for the soul… or something. With this in mind, and taking account of the proven fact that horses and I have a mutual dislike of each other, and tutus just don’t suit me, swimming chose its self as my challenge. My ancient goggles looked shocked to be taken out of the drawer, and I may have disturbed a family of moths as I dug out my swim shorts. However, enough of the excuses, I was all set. So, I confidently entered the (freezing) pool, barely flinching as my lower body

54 | OCTOBER 2015

dropped in. Feeling rather pleased with myself for getting that far, I attempted to adjust my un-adjustable c1986 goggles with zero elasticity. Still, I sort of looked the part, which is half the battle. In my mind I had already decided: 30 minutes swimming was my goal. Should be easy enough? Right? The first length went ok. Surprisingly I kind of remembered what to do, and stood up to satisfyingly take in my 25m achievement. The next few lengths got progressively harder, mainly due to the amount of chlorinated pool water sloshing about in my lungs. It was apparent my breathing, a fairly fundamental part of any activity, definitely needed some work. As I splashed up and down the pool as best I could, acutely aware the life guards were on edge, I couldn’t help but smile.

There I was, a fit ‘young’ man, capable of running, cycling, playing football for hours on end. Yet, a couple of rotund ladies in their 70’s glided past me like I was treading water (which to be fair I may have been). They were chatting away and did not appear to be exerting any effort at all. They must have done 40 or 50 nonstop lengths in the time I was in the pool. Conversely, I stopped after each and every length, stood up, tweaked my hopeless goggles, discreetly coughed up a litre of fluid and regained my composure before setting myself up to attack the next long 25m ahead of me. I’d like to say I am confident I will master this dark art, but I fear it will probably just torment and frustrate me. That said, I will continue to battle away. After all, if I don’t improve now, what am I going to do to put those youngsters in their place when I’m in my 70’s?

garden confidential BY PAUL CLARKE

PAULS PLANT OF THE MONTH Hypericum Hidcote produces good sized yellow flowers from around July to August and often a second flush of flowers through to October. It is evergreen in most winters and grows to a maximum height of 1.5m / 5ft and a slightly larger spread. Established plants require no attention other than an annual prune which I normally do with a hedge trimmer. Flowers best in full sun, but will tolerate partial shade. Very colourful and can be grown as a hardy hedge.

62 | OCTOBER 2015

Hypericum What to do in your garden in October Autumn has arrived and we can expect the first frosts this month and of course British Summer time ends on the 25th of October when the clocks go back and the shorter days really do begin. As ever there is plenty to do in the garden as the trees change colour and the leaves start to fall. Forget the gym and get yourself a good workout by raking and sweeping fallen leaves. Even on the coolest of days this will work up a sweat . Leafs are great for composting and if you don’t have a compost bin put them in a bin bag with a few holes in it and next year you will have some valuable leaf mould to feed your plants.

This months poem... “October’s the month when the smallest breeze Gives us a shower of autumn leaves, Bonfires and pumpkins leaves sailing down October is red and golden and brown”

pauls jobs for the month Flower Garden • Plant spring bulbs. The earlier you plant bulbs the better, for the soil is still warm and getting the roots established before the weather closes in will help them fight wet and rot . Think of buying just a few varieties in large numbers. Some of the Spring bulbs to consider are daffodils, hyacinths, crocuses, snowdrops, fritillaries and lilies. • Cut back all of the tall shrubs such as lavatera and buddleia. • Now is the time to take hardwood cuttings from buddleia, flowering currants and forsythia • Good time to plant bare root trees • Keep deadheading dahlias • Prune climbing roses • Clear any fallen rose leaves to prevent black spot from over wintering • Clear old leaves from hostas • This is a good time to take fuchsia cuttings. Cut them around 15cm from the shoot tip then make a clean cut just below a leaf joint. Trim away the lowest leaves and

Pauls

insert several cuttings around the edge of a pot. Keep at a temperature of around 18-20c.

Vegetable & Fruit Garden • Create new strawberry beds and plant young strawberry plants raised from runners. • In the vegetable plot you can now plant spring cabbage and overwintering onion sets. • Harvest your final crop of beetroot and store in a cool dark location. • Good time to divide your rhubarb crowns • Continue to harvest your apples and pears

General Maintenance

to return to the water before adding it to the compost. • Continue to tidy your garden borders by removing dead flower stems and weeds . • Last chance to give your hedges a trim this month before Winter

Lawn Maintenance • By the end of the month you will probably have given your lawn its final cut of the year. After this it is a good time to give the grass a good scarifying with a lawn rake to pull out dead grass and moss. • This is a good time to apply an autumn fertiliser to improve root growth.

• Take advantage of any dry days to paint fences, sheds etc with a preservative • A nice mucky job to do if you have a pond is to remove all of the black sludge that forms at the bottom. It is worth doing to improve the oxygen in the water. Pile the rubbish on the side of the pond to allow any wildlife the chance

Record-breaking Hospice Girls Night Out walk

Women gather on Angel Hill at the start of the Girls Night Out walk, in aid of St Nicholas Hospice Care

Thousands of pairs of flashing bunny ears lit Angel Hill last month, for St Nicholas Hospice Care’s Girls Night Out walk. The women-only moonlight walk on September 12 saw 1,800 women pull on their pyjamas to walk 11.2 or six miles around the town to raise an estimated £160,000. This year’s walk, the seventh annual Girls Night Out, was a record-breaker, with more women than ever before taking part. Jenny Baskett, Hospice Events and Challenges Fundraiser, said: “It was an absolutely awesome night. Once again, everyone showed how much they care for the Hospice. “Seeing so many women set off with the same purpose – to support the Hospice – made me feel very emotional and proud. Every step they took and every penny they raised makes a difference.” More than 200 volunteers and marshals supported the walk, while emergency services and airmen from RAF Honington were also on hand to ensure women were safe. Topless men handed out water throughout the walk and a Zumba warm-up got the night started. Jenny added: “We simply could not run Girls Night Out without phenomenal support from across the community: Not just all our amazing volunteers, but also the wonderful residents of Bury who clap and cheer the

women as they walk round and offer drinks and snacks, or the motorists who give a supportive toot of their horn as they drive past. Thank you to each and every one of them.” All the women had a different reason to take part and Zoe Battershall, of the Follie Dollies team, was one of many to return and walk again this year. “I really enjoy taking part, there’s such a good atmosphere. Everyone encourages you all the way round. But we do it to support the Hospice - that’s the main reason,” she said. Shelley Hammond, Lisa Cotton and Michelle Reynolds, from Bury St Edmunds, were walking together for the first time. Shelley said: “The Hospice is a great cause, so I was keen to support it.” Lisa said: “One of my friends has been really poorly this year and a friend’s husband was helped by the Hospice before he died. That’s why I decided to walk.” OCTOBER 2015 | 65

Bury St Edmunds shows us the way to do it! by Phil Swadling

Bury St Edmunds Bat Rescue is run on a voluntary basis by Libby Ranzetta and a small team of helpers in accordance with the Bat Conservation Trust (BCT) Bat Care Guidelines. Bury St Edmunds Bat Rescue treats and rehabilitates injured and grounded bats from West Suffolk and beyond. The bats are returned to the area where they were found wherever possible as soon as they are able to thrive again in the wild. I recently had the pleasure of popping down to the Bat Rescue Centre here in Bury St Edmunds and one thing that struck me is that Libby and her team including her dog Raisin (Bat Detective) are so passionate and extremely dedicated about their work. Libby set up the Bat Rescue centre over 4 years ago after a very stressful period in her life and she went on to explain that she has always been fascinated by what some may think are mysterious creatures of the night. During the centre’s busy spell they can have up to 100 bats at any time which they did this summer, most of which were pups, sadly most of them didn’t make it mainly due to the fact that the nearest substitute for a bat mum’s milk is milk from a goat who has very recently given birth, so if anyone is reading this and has a goat and breeds from her please get in touch as the milk can be frozen and used when needed. Also the centre is in constant need of blankets and old towels so please spare a thought when you replace your old linen! Please give Libby a call on 07974 267345.

70 | OCTOBER 2015

As well as abandoned young bats, Libby sees a lot of dehydrated and hungry bats. She puts this down to bad summers having a knock on effect on the quantity of insects, the stable diet of a bat. Also she cares for bats which have been injured by “talking with cats”. Part of the centre’s role is to treat these injuries and nurse the small mammals back to health. The centre has its very own exercise tent where they can be observed drinking water, eating and also where their stamina can be monitored. One of the most important tests is to check the bats are able to take off from the ground. Once all these actions have been practised and honed to perfection the bats are then released back into the wild at the same location as they were found.

WOMEN’S GUILD OF FRIENDS

So what can you do to help Suffolk’s bat population? 1) Keep an area of your garden wild; even plant some wild flowers which will encourage insects to visit. 2) Provide a bowl of water for the bats to drink from. Some of you may do this already for the birds, especially in hot weather. 3) Cat owners can help by keeping their cats indoors at dawn and dusk.

What should you do if you find a bat? Using gloves or a soft cloth, gently pick up the bat and put it in a shoebox or small container that has air holes. In the box put a dry, scrunched up cloth for the bat to crawl into. Also provide a shallow dish of water for the bat to drink from, a plastic milk bottle top is ideal. Put the box in a warm, quiet place and call BSE Bat Rescue if you are in West Suffolk on 07974 267345 otherwise please call the Bat Conservation Trust Helpline on 0345 1300 228.

Libby would love to hear from schools, groups or organisations who would be interested in her bringing some bats and giving a talk about them. Please give her a call!

We meet at the Odd Fellows Hall Whiting Street Bury St Edmunds on the 4th Monday in the month. We have speakers, outings, raffles, auctions and a nice cup of tea with biscuits! Contact Pat Hufton on

Hi guys!

hope you all are having a good week and reading my page makes it even better!

Happy Girl Down The Dump

It’s lovely to see so many children making the most of the light evenings by playing out after school! It’s especially lovely that the council have revamped ‘The Dump’ on the Nowton Estate. In my life I’ve never seen so many people at that playground all at once. There are fun things to play on for lots of different ages. I also like seeing that they have made a path for buggies and bikes so that they don’t have to go down the steep slope. Most nights me and my friends happily come down on our bikes! Well done and thank you to Sarah Stamp and Patrick Chung and anyone else who was involved.

My most recent ‘Happy’ purchase was this beautiful necklace from Claire’s in town. Initially it looks like an owl necklace but when you push the ears in, the wings spread out and it turns into a miniature clock. So not only does it look good but it is also useful for telling what time it is. What’s not to like!

Make your own Lip Balms

It’s getting to that time of year again where the wind is blowing in your face and your lips are getting very dry. I was browsing on YouTube and came across a ‘Make your own lip balm’ tutorial, so I thought I would give it a go! I was pleased with the results so thought I would share it with you guys. What you need is a small pot, Vaseline/Petroleum Jelly, peppermint extract, vanilla or even cinnamon, a glass jug and a metal spoon. First you get 2 spoonfuls of Vaseline and put it in the glass jug then add 1 spoon of scent to the jug. After that place it in the microwave until it is melted. Once it is, stir it well then pour your mixture into the pot and leave it to set for about half an hour. I started adding food colouring but it didn’t really mix in that well. Have fun if you try it! Halloween on a budget... Halloween is upon us and it’s time to prep for a night of trickor-treating, but how do you get the most out of your thrills and chills without scaring away savings? When it comes to Halloween, the biggest items you can save on are costumes and treats. For costumes, stick with the classics. Pirates, princesses and vampires never go out of style, and the outfits can be passed down to younger siblings. To save even more, try to purchase items you can reuse again. Capes, fairy wings and tiaras are staples that can last for years. Plus, they can be used in many different ways -- you just have to get creative. Now on to the treats. Halloween is all about the sweets and chocolate for the kiddies, but you don’t want to break the bank trying to provide for your trick-or-treaters. In this case, bargain shops are not going to give you a deal. While a £1 bag of Snickers may sound like a cheap option, you’re better off at discount retailers like home bargains and Pound Shop, which offer bigger bags with larger quantities. In the end, you’re saving more per piece. So, before the ghosts and goblins come out, use these scary good money-saving tips to have a happy and budget-friendly Halloween. And remember, try to avoid homes that have don’t have pumpkins lit in their windows or porches, as this usually means they don’t celebrate Halloween and probably won’t want groups of scary monsters knocking on their doors all night long. Respect the elderly too who may fell intimidated by the older ones dressed up. Halloween isn’t for everyone! 78 | OCTOBER 2015

e live in bewildering times. At the beginning of this year no one expected a majority conservative government by the end of it. Nobody expected to see the tragic scenes of hundreds of thousands of people fleeing war-torn Middle East trying to get to Europe for a better life. Nobody foresaw a leftwing politician becoming head of the Labour Party and no one expected England to win back the Ashes so convincingly. While we are reeling from all these things the future still remains uncertain. Are we truly out of the recession? Or is the present economic situation just a bubble? What will we do with all the refugees when they get here; are we taking enough, and should we do more? Will we

still be in Europe in a couple of years’ time? Will Scotland insist on another referendum if they are not happy with the new Scotland bill? How much longer will the Queen remain Queen? Will there be a monarchy after she dies? Then there is all the uncertainty about right to die legislation and what it really means for the vulnerable. We have worries about the education system here in Bury St. Edmunds. We must be concerned by the recent rise in violent crime – we have had more murders in Bury St. Edmunds in the last five years than the whole of the previous twenty put together. It is very easy to retreat into our shells, our homes and families, and not to take any interest at all. It is better to be active if one can,

MORETON HALL and it is really encouraging to see so many people making collections for the Syrian refugees. At Christ Church, if you have things and money you want to donate, we are very happy to collect them and pass them on to West Suffolk Hospital Chaplaincy who are co-ordinating some of the response here in Bury St. Edmunds. Another thing we can do is to put our trust in God who knows our plight and sent His Son, Jesus Christ, into the world. Jesus Christ is styled ‘Prince of Peace’. That may seem a strange title given how many wars there are at the moment. However, the word peace has two distinct meanings. One, of course, is people living in harmony in the absence of war. The other is the deep inner peace, or shalom, that comes to those who put their trust in God. Her Majesty, the Queen, often refers to the strength she gets from her faith and the evidence of her faultless life is great proof of this. When one considers all the changes and crises she has led the country through we have ample evidence of what the peace of God can achieve. It has been my experience to know something of that peace too. It is very difficult to describe but deep down within

OCTOBER yourself you know that God has your life in His hands and will bring it to a joyful conclusion. You also know that He is judge of all the world and one day He will bring all of humanity back into a right relationship with Himself in heaven. He promises to judge the world and punish and reward appropriately. He knows about all the injustices there are and will deal with them. This is not ‘pie in the sky when you die’ but rather the comforting thought that we do live in a moral universe which is working towards a glorious and good end. I know there are many people who are anxious, uncertain and on occasions even frightened. If you want to know more, or to find something of this peace for yourself, please do not hesitate to contact me at the church. The prophet Isaiah, obviously on a day he had been out walking in the mountains and had got lost, said this “I heard a voice behind me saying, this is the way, walk ye in it”. It reminds us that even when we take the wrong path, God is there to call to us and bring us back to a safe pathway. That, in many ways, is what His peace is all about. If you are feeling lost or worried, hear the voice of God, find the pathway and the peace and contentment that you need in Him.
