We are both really pleased that the last shop in the Hardwick Parade is at last let out meaning the parade is full for the first time in a while! We wish the Launderette the best of luck. If you haven’t visited do take a look – they have several huge machines capable of cleaning duvets which Sarah found particularly useful in the lead up to Christmas!

CYCLING
You may have noticed that some changes have happened outside the Community Centre. We have funded some cycling racks to encourage people to cycle and park their bikes safely when using the area/dropping children at school and as part of that we asked St Edmundsbury Borough Council to carry out some planting to make the area look better. We are working with Town Cllr Ann Williamson to tidy up the shrubbery around the Community Centre car park and also hope to thin out the bushes alongside the church in coming months.

COMMUNITY
GARDEN
It’s full steam ahead with the Community Garden, largely thanks to Ann Williamson, Town Cllr and Chair of the Nowton Neighbourhood Residents Association. Planting has started and wood chips have been laid down, but there is still lots to do! Last month we both joined Ann and Melanie Lesser from Bury in Bloom to give an assembly at Hardwick Primary to launch a competition for the children there to name the new community garden. The children were very excited and many of them are hoping to get involved not just in the competition but in helping us all to look after the garden. If you like gardening and would like to help support this important community initiative please get in touch by email nowtonnra@gmail.com.

Pruning the orchard
T
his month Woodland Ways will prune the fruit trees at Pond Covert. The little trees are just coming into their fourth year and stood up remarkably well to the gales in December. The high winds have left many fallen and half fallen trees in Pond Covert and at Natterer’s Wood. We will leave these in situ as they make perfect homes for dozens of species of invertebrates and become a food source by attracting mosses, lichens and fungi. These organisms also aid the return of nutrients to the soil through the nitrogen cycle. In previous visits to Pond Covert, planting or path laying, we have encountered one of the inhabitants, the violet ground beetle, (Carabas violaceus), large, up to three centimetres, shiny, black, with elegant violet edges to its wing
casings. These insects are nocturnal hunters and rely on deep leaf litter and decaying wood to rest during the daylight hours, so will benefit from the habitat provided by the fallen trees. Fortunately, our fruit trees do not seem to have played host to any insect or fungal pests so far, and are looking healthy and thriving. When pruning this year, we will be looking to shorten the previous years’ growth by about a third. This will encourage new branches to develop and form the ‘goblet’ shape which we are trying to achieve. We will also cut any branches that are growing into the centre of the tree, preventing light from reaching in. We had our first fruit last season, and we hope, with effective pruning, to increase our yield this year.
Join us at Woodland Ways... Why not join in with a Woodland Ways work party to help improve the Moreton Hall woods? No experience is needed and all are welcome; we’ll show you what to do. Liquid Concealer
Flaunt Bone Structure
Use Moisturiser lots
Don’t overdo Brows
No matter your age, moisturising to keep your skin supple is vital to any beauty regime. After you rinse your face, immediately slather your face with moisturiser. Wait for your skin to soak up the moisturiser before applying your makeup.
As you age, do not worry about plucking your eyebrows. You cannot make them look even because most likely your face is asymmetrical. If you get your eyebrows out of balance, your whole look is ruined. Pluck a few stray hairs if you must, but leave your brows intact or you will find yourself seeking professional help.
Yellow Tinted Makeup
Eyeshadow Base
Use a Dampened Sponge
Chuck the Black Eyeliner
No more dry powder
Open Your Eyes
To conceal lines like crow’s feet around the eyes, use a liquid concealer. The liquid covers the lines and creases while the waxy based concealer settles into the crevices you are trying to hide. The concealer in a click pen works best.
One of the easiest ways to make your face lose years is to add warmth to your skin tone. You can add warmth to your complexion by using a yellow-tinted make-up. This does not mean you slather your face with mustard tinted makeup. It is much more subtle than that.
When you are applying your makeup, use a dampened sponge to dilute your makeup. Wet and wring the water out of your sponge, leaving it damp. Then, apply a tiny drop of makeup to the sponge. The water on the sponge acts as a thinning agent causing a translucent look as the makeup is applied to the skin. Opaque, heavy makeup makes you look older. The translucent effect makes your skin shimmer and you immediately look younger!
As you age, your skin requires moisture to look young. To maintain the moisture throughout the day, you must have it layered on your skin. Use moisturising foundation, tinted moisturisers, gels, liquids, and other creamy substances. Anything that is a dry powder should be tossed out!
Chiseled jawlines are what younger, fatty faced people desire to have. They paint on blush to define their cheekbones. Embrace your skinnier looking face by emphasizing your bone structure.
Eyeshadow base is one of the essential supplies in an aging woman’s makeup bag. If your eyelids have even the tiniest hint of lines, the eyeshadow alone will accentuate it. The eyeshadow base covers these tiny imperfections and helps you shed years quickly.
If you are like most women over the age of 29, you have been wearing black eyeliner for more years than you care to count. It is time to discard the old standby because it is showing your age! Use a brown creamy eyeliner for a more subtle eye enhancement. You will love the younger you that you see in the mirror.
Focus on your eyes; after all, they can be your best feature. Curl your eyelashes in an upward sweep. This will help make your eyes look more youthful instead of drawing attention to the crows’ feet with false eyelashes. JANUARY 2016 | 17

Welcome to the 19th hole, a place for golf tips, reviews and everything golf related.
Welcome to the 19th Hole HAPPY NEW YEAR I hope you all had enjoyable Christmas and New Year celebrations with family and friends. So now that 2016 is here us as golfers can look forward to a new season starting in a couple of months. So whether you want to erase last season from your memory or you are looking to take your game to next level this season, let’s put some goals in place to help us stay focused all season long. The best players in the world outline what they want to achieve, why shouldn’t you?
BEST OF LUCK for 2016 Coaches Corner – HIT DRIVES HIGH AND LONG
When it comes to driving, we’ve all seen the ideal set-up positions for hitting it long and straight. However, your body positions when you strike the ball – impact alignment – are just as crucial. Below are a few keys aspects for setting goals/ targets for 2016, write these areas down somewhere so you can keep assessing your performance throughout the year. Specific Outline in detail what you want to achieve, does it have enough detail? Measurable Do you have a way to identify how you are performing? Have reached it? Are you on track? Adjustable If you achieve it, can you increase the intensity or is it too lofty and needs to be more realistic? Realistic Do you 100% REALLY believe you can do this? If not, deep down you won’t be fully committed to it. Time-based Have you set yourself time goals for each aspect you have outlined?
At impact the more your spine tilts back, the higher your left shoulder can be (for a right hander). This position allows you to achieve an upward strike through impact, giving you the best opportunity to achieve maximum distance from the tee box. A key aspect to getting in this position is having your head behind the ball. Focus on doing this and the rest will follow, giving you a quicker swing and more yards. I get my pupils to concentrate on the positions throughout practice time; once they can achieve this action at a slower pace they can then increase the speed throughout the practice. This allows for confidence to build and results to be positive.

Nicola Delglyn Osteomyologist Physical & Nutritional Therapy Happy New Year and Hello to 2016!
Happy Birthday too, to all the New Year babies, young and old! Did you know that January is named after the Roman god, Janus, the god of doors because this month is the door to the year? And January originally consisted of 30 days when it was added to the 10-month Roman calendar, which happened around 700BC by Numa Pompilius. However, in 46 BC Julius Caesar added a day making it 31 days long. The New Year usually brings thoughts of making changes or thinking about making the most of our healthy & fitness during the year. Interestingly, the January birthstone, GARNET symbolizes constancy, quite apt for this time of year. Loyalty, faithfulness, commitment, dedication, determination, tenacity commitment and staying power are all positive words associated with the red gem. So what’s happening health & fitness wise in the next 12 months? Here is the top 10 based on a survey of 2,800 health and fitness professionals worldwide who were given 40 potential trends to choose from. 1. We see the ever-advancing technological era continue during 2016, wearable technology, including smart watches fitness trackers and GPS tracking devices from brands like Jawbone, Fitbit, Pebble, Garmin and more, are expected to be one of the most popular fitness trends this year. According to The American Academy of Sports Medicine “Tech devices are now central to our daily lives and have changed the way we plan and manage our workouts”. If you are interested in technology, a good site to have a look at would be www.techradar.com/news/ wearables/10-best-fitness-trackers. 2. Body weight training, including press-ups, sit-ups and other strength training that doesn’t require weights – fantastic exercise for anyone who travels or has time constraints due to work pressures. 3. HiiT (High Intensity Interval Training), an effective blast of alternating intense bursts of activity, either cardio or
24 | JANUARY 2016
Treatments to beat pain for weight based and a fixed period of less-intense or even complete rest – great for raising the heartbeat, fat burning and creating lean muscle. An entire workout can usually be performed in 30 minutes or less – so no excuses. 4. Strength training. I believe this is one for everyone and is not just for the young. OK you’ll tone up and build muscle but you’ll also burn fat, burn more calories and protect your bone health and muscle mass. Important to all of us “of a certain age!” 5. Educated and experienced fitness professionals are a must, and I believe that the role of fitness professionals will become more holistic, being more involved in injury management and nutrition and working with musculoskeletal professionals such as myself. We saw in 2015 a rise of the personal trainer/celebrity, which emphasizes the importance of national fitness certifications and credentials more than ever. 6. Personal Training is now offered at most gyms in the Bury area and if you are new to exercise, an older exerciser or looking to reach new fitness goals, working with a personal trainer can be really beneficial. Not only will they prevent you from hurting yourself on equipment you are unfamiliar with or over-doing things, they will encourage and motivate you to help you achieve your ultimate health and fitness goals. 7. Functional fitness is great as the workouts mimic and support our daily activities. Exercises like bending down, picking things up, walking upstairs and pulling/pushing doors are all included – it really makes sense. 8. Fitness programmes that keep older adults healthy and active are still in the top 10. A good call, as research shows that after the age of 40 we lose muscle mass and strength and may suffer from the dreaded “love handles”. 9. Exercise and weight loss. This may not seem like a trend per say, but in addition to exercise, nutrition continues to be a key component of weight-loss programs and can lead to great health benefits.
HEALTH & BEAUTY
Physical & Nutritional Therapy adults, children & athletes 10. Yoga/Yogalates – I didn’t realise how many different types of yoga there are, new iterations such as fat yoga and salty yoga seem to be “the in-thing”. Other forms of yoga include Power Yoga, Yogalates, Bikram, Ashtanga, Vinyasa, Kripalu, Anurara, Kundalini, Sivananda and much more – the choice is yours. Looking for something different? You can always have a go at Parkour – street fitness like the Ninja Warriors, Surfing indoors on mechanical boards, great for core stability, Rebounding – you don’t need to don the lycra this time around, but bounce away on your own trampete, Cardio tennis, exercises are performed to up tempo music and best of all you can expect to burn more calories, or Childs Play a retro and innovative adult only exercise programme of British Bulldog, Tag and Capture the flag.
Nutrition in 2016 So that’s fitness, what about nutrition? Well it’s quite simple, as a Nutritionist who believes in naturopathic eating, 2016 will see an emphasis on naturally functional nutrition, which uses food as a healer rather than just as sustenance. This is our strongest foundation for good health, and I approve whole-heartedly. So what else is happening? 1. More emphasis on cutting sugar consumption will be continuing throughout 2016, with many food manufacturers changing their formulations for the current trend. 2. Low-fat eating is continuing to face a long slow death. I cannot think of anything more disturbing than eating heavily processed and chemically enhanced food. Not all low-fat foods are good for us. Go natural, your body will love you for it. 3. Old weight management business models are failing, so many will continue to cash in on the naturopathic nutrition idea.
4. Vegetable proteins are due to fly this year and are more sustainable and affordable than animal sources. Algae, nuts, vegetables, yeast and even insects will be used as ingredients to up the protein punch. Algae cooking oils are due to take the market by storm for anyone interested in their internal health. Algae oil is 75% less saturated fat than olive oil and has the highest level of monounsaturated fat. Versatile and easy on the palette it can be used for cooking and salad dressing. 5. Look for an emphasis on “less is more” – fewer ingredients, and many more products touting their “free from” claims – free-from growth hormones, free-from GMOs, free from gluten and other allergens. Digestive wellness is the secret driver of this and other trends. 6. The good carbs vs bad carbs debate continues but we will probably see the continued rise of good grains such as oats, quinoa, spelt, pearl barley, buck-wheat. Grains are good for the cardio-vascular system, digestive health and even longevity. 7. Unfortunately, a blot on the landscape, which I am all too aware of, will be the prevalence of what the marketing companies call “Snackification”. We will be seeing more & more food products brought to the market to encourage snacking rather than eating nutritious natural foods. Breakfast, mid-morning and mid-afternoon snacks are the main ones to be promoted so just be aware when you are in the supermarket. Don’t be taken in by the hype. At the Delglyn Clinic we take health and fitness very seriously, after all our bodies were designed to move and move they must, they also need to right nourishment and care too. Which is why 2016 will see a few changes in Clinic with more emphasis on a more holistic approach to health, fitness and wellbeing. You’ll be able to catch up with what I’m doing and visit my Natural Kitchen, on my new website, which will be up and running in the New Year.

Happy New Year! Lymphoedema Support Suffolk (LSS)’s last 2015 meeting was a festive evening for Lymphoedema and Lipodema patients held at Moreton Hall Community Centre. Amongst the seasonal fun was being taught how to make sugarcraft snowmen under the watchful eye Sharon Phillips, a lymphoedema patient – it’s more difficult than it first looks!
Some of the group proudly showing off their snowmen.Gwen Williams at the LSS stall.
LSS meets at Moreton Hall Community Centre from 7pm – 9 pm and the 2016 meeting dates are: February 22nd, April 25th, June 27th, August 22nd, October 24th and December 5th All Lymphoedema and Lipodema patients are very welcome to attend. There’s no joining fee, it’s a really friendly and informal evening along with having a cuppa and a cake. Di Cheever, NHS Lymphoedema Nurse 28 | JANUARY 2016
Consultant & Service Manager, leads the meetings, updating us on new treatments, health advice, and managing Lymphoedema. There are group discussions, guest speakers and Tripudio sessions too. Tripudio exercises emphasise fun as it’s the Latin word for dance and the exercises certainly do leave you feeling uplifted. The exercises can be done standing or seated so it’s suited to mixed levels of fitness and everyone can work to their own ability. The Tripudio stretches focus on releasing tension, fascia and scar tissue, all of which are thought to inhibit lymphatic health. Patients have reported improved feelings of wellbeing as well as increased range of movement and overall health and fitness levels after doing Tripudio exercises. It’s Lymphoedema Awareness week from 7th – 11th March 2016 and a date for your diary is the Lymphoedema Awareness Day on Friday 11th March, 1.30 – 4.30 pm at Moreton Hall Community Centre. Lamb & Dauphinoise HO Savour every mouthful of this rich, comforting pie with red wine gravy and potato topping
36 | JANUARY 2016
OTPOT
FOOD & DRINK
Ingredients: 3 large carrot, cut into large chunks 1 onion, roughly chopped 1 garlic bulb, split in 2 few sprigs rosemary few sprigs thyme 2 bay leaf 1 tbsp tomato purée 1 shoulder of lamb on the bone, about 2½ kg 1 bottle red wine For the topping 4-5 potatoes (the roundest you have) 4 sweet potato (the roundest you have) 150ml double cream few knobs of butter
Method: Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. In a flameproof casserole dish that is large enough to fit the lamb, snugly scatter over all the vegetables and herbs, and roughly stir in the tomato purée. Sit the lamb on top, pour over the bottle of wine and season generously. Cover the dish and heat up on top of the stove, then put in the oven and leave undisturbed for 3 hrs. Remove from the oven, leave to cool, then chill overnight. The next day, remove all the hard fat from around the lamb and discard. Lift the lamb out of the dish, scraping away and keeping any of the jellified juices. Pull apart and shred the meat, discarding any large pieces of fat and the bones. Put the lamb back in the dish, then spoon over the jellied sauce and mix with the vegetables. Set aside. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. To make the topping, peel and neatly slice the potatoes by hand into rounds. Place in a pan of cold, salted water, bring to a hard boil and drain straight away. Tip back into the pan, pour over the cream and season. Now it’s up to you how fancy you want to be – you can pile the potatoes over the lamb casually, or you can arrange the potato and sweet potato in interleaving circles. Drizzle over any remaining cream from the pan and dot with butter. Bake for 40 mins-1 hr until the top is golden and the sauce is just starting to bubble. JANUARY 2016 | 37

“Help! I worry What has you up at night? The economy? Family? Jobs? Health care? Ebola? Many of those things are outside of our control, and worrying just compounds the grief.
How do you stop?
While exercise is a commonly prescribed cure for easing your worries, because it releases feel-good hormones, you don’t have to break a sweat to calm your fears. Here are some other ways you can take to take your mind off of your troubles... CHANGE YOUR BEDTIME If you like to stay up late at night, you might be feeding your inner worrier. Going to to bed very late and sleeping for short amounts of time can make you more overwhelmed with negative thoughts than those who keep more regular sleeping hours. You tend to worry about the future and dwell over past events, and this can cause higher risk of anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and obsessivecompulsive disorder.

Making sure that sleep is obtained during the right time of day may be an inexpensive and easily disseminable intervention for individuals who are bothered by intrusive thoughts SMELL A GRAPEFRUIT Breathing in certain aromas can help reduce stress. It may also help improve tension, worry, and demands. One of the essential oils is grapefruit, which is refreshing and revitalising, and can help boost the body’s feelings of energy and happiness. BREATHE SLOWLY Deep breathing, also called yoga breathing, is known to lower stress and anxiety. To use when you are feeling upset. First, exhale completely through your mouth, then inhale through your nose for a count of four. Hold your breath for seven seconds, then exhale through your mouth for a count of eight. It’s not possible to breathe deeply and be anxious at the same time, use the 4-7-8 breath technique at least twice a day or whenever you feel stressed.
EAT CHOCOLATE While sweets can cause you to have a sugar high and crash, researchers have found that a little chocolate can be beneficial for worriers. Dark chocolate can help calm your nerves. ENGAGE IN FOREST THERAPY Walking in the woods and listening to the sounds of nature can reduce stress. This can lower stress hormone levels more compared with walking in an urban area. WRITE DOWN YOUR WORRIES Getting your emotions down on paper sounds like it could fuel anxieties, but the activity has the opposite effect. You reassess that situation so that you’re not as likely to worry about those situations because you’ve slain that beast. TAKE UP KNITTING Keeping your hands busy can help keep your mind off of worries. Keeping your hands and mind busy interferes with storing and encoding visual images, which explains why worry beads and knitting calm us down.

Show stoppers BY ANDREW SOUTHWOOD
H
aving just returned from a double header of primary school Christmas performances for my oldest two, I can honestly say I think am more relieved than they are. Thankfully my son, now 7 years old, has no aspirations in the performing arts. Asked if there was anyone in the class who didn’t want a talking part, I believe he was on it in a flash, and I can’t say I blame him. In his mind, why would you put yourself through that stress when you don’t have to? He (or should I say, we) learnt the numerous songs, tunes and dances pretty well during December. Although, as ‘sheep 4’ he was not the leading star of the show, he did have to perform a fairly complex synchronised dance routine with several other animals on stage. As the big moment arrived and the sheep got into full swing,
54 | JANUARY 2016
it was clear he has been lucky enough to inherit my natural rhythm. That is to say, despite an extraordinary amount of concentration and effort, he was usually about half a second behind the others. Then there was my daughters ‘Reception’ show. Even my cold cynical heart couldn’t help but smile as sixty 4/5 year olds gave it their all, in a wonderful performance at their first Christmas nativity. It was magical, if slightly nerve racking, to watch. My ‘little angel’ looked stunning in her costume, complete with wings and tinsel. Even when she caught her foot, tangled in her long dress, as she mounted the stage, she managed to gracefully recover the situation (just) – as any angel worth their harp would. She’d been learning her words, all 5 of them, for
weeks. We’d practiced them with a clear loud speaking voice… a lot. Of course when her line came, I almost missed it (keeping a small toddler entertained on your lap at these things can be challenging), but then she spoke… clearly and loudly! I may be bias, her stage debut as ‘Angel 2’ was nothing short of Oscar winning. So there we have it. All done for another year. The teachers lay slumped in the staff room surrounded by empty chocolate wrappers, the parents are at home wondering what to do with the hand crafted costume, and the children… well they look as if they have run a marathon, such is the effort they have put into their day. Meanwhile, the song sheets may be discarded into the blue bin, but we’ll all be humming those damn tunes well into the New Year.

PAULS PLANT OF THE MONTH
Sarcococca Confusa What to do in your garden in January
So you want a flowering shrub which is also highly scented. Then why not go for a Sarcococca probably easier to ask for a Christmas or sweet box names by which it is also known. This is a bush of around 5ft in height and around 4ft wide. Tiny, fragrant creamy-white flowers in winter or spring, followed by red, purple or black berries so there always something of interest. Another good feature is that they thrive in shade are good as ground cover in a dark areas. They can also cope with full sun. Good drainage is helpful but not essential. They need no pruning but you can just cut to fit the space you have to fill. It is a good choice for a low maintenance garden as there is really nothing you need to do to it once planted!
62 | JANUARY 2016
Happy New Year to all Gardeners. As I write this the coldest winter for 50 years predicted by many newspapers has yet to arrive and in fact it has been mild enough to still warrant the need to cut lawns! Eventually Winter will arrive in Suffolk and on those days when you can’t get out in to the garden, then this is an opportunity to have a look at some of those flower and seed catalogues and plan ahead for the year. Spare a thought for the garden birds and try to supply some bird food and fresh water.

pauls jobs for the month Flower Garden
Vegetable Garden
• Prune wall climbers such as ivy away from window frames and gutters
• Harvest parsnips and leeks.
• Raise pots of the ground to ensure compost drains freely • knock snow from branches of evergreen shrubs to prevent branches breaking under the weight • Prune your Wisteria plant now, cutting back summer sideshoots to 2 or 3 buds. • Prune rose bushes now whilst they are dormant. Cut back to just above a bud and remove any crossing or dead branches • Cut back the old foliage from ornamental grasses before growth begins - clip them to within a few inches off the ground. • Cut down the old stems of perennial plants like Sedum • Check Dahlia tubers in storage and remove any that are showing signs of rotting.
This months poem...
• Start chitting early potatoes - Perfect for this is an egg box and place in a bright cool frostfree place. • Grow some Garlic - so easy to do! If you have a spare clove then get them planted asap. Break up the bulbs into the individual cloves and plant about 4 inches apart just below the ground.
Fruit Garden • Begin pruning your apple trees and pear - this is always best done whilst they are dormant. The exception here are plums and cherries which should be pruned in summer to avoid silver leaf infection • Prune blackcurrant bushes, gooseberries and redcurrants to maintain a productive framework. • Try forcing rhubarb plants by
placing an upturned bucket over the crown. This will force tender pink stems to grow.
General Garden Maintenance • Finish collecting leaves and clearing old plants from beds and borders. • Wrap tender plants in pots with a fleece covering to give them some added protection. • Get the wheelbarrow out to spread a thick layer of mulch such as horse manure around fruit trees and bushes. Don’t cover the crown of the plants. • What to do with the old Christmas Tree? Well if you bought a potted or rooted Christmas tree, then plant it outside and hopefully it will survive until next year.

Happy new year everybody!
I hope you had a great Christmas and I hope Santa was good to you. Here’s to the New Year ahead of us.
molly xx
LUSH
Lush is lush! Over the Christmas holidays me and my mum went shopping and bought some of their products. I bought a ton of their bath bombs because I love them so much! My favourite bath bomb is the intergalactic, it is amazing! It is blue on the outside with a little ring around that is coloured with little specs of white and pink. When you pop it into the bath it drops to the bottom then floats back up and starts swirling.
JUMP STREET Once it is completely gone it should leave you with blue sparkly water! They make my baths so much more fun and smell great!
HEALTHY SMOOTHIES
It’s just been Christmas and everybody has had lots of sweets and chocolates so why not start the year with a healthy smoothie. In my smoothies I especially love having blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and apple juice. With a smoothie you can’t go wrong even if you think you have nothing in your fridge, you will always be able to make a smoothie out of something in there. I always keep some frozen fruit in the freezer, it makes the smoothie even more refreshing in the morning to wake me up. My saying is, ‘if the colours go well together it will taste just fine!’ A lot of people are probably thinking that sounds crazy, but from what I have done, it has worked well.
66 | JANUARY 2015
So….. Where do I start! Jump Street is an awesome place in Colchester and is basically a whole load of trampolines all put together with little walk ways in between them. In the arena they are different areas, there is a basketball area and dodge ball area a big pillow that you can bounce onto and the wall. You pay for an hours slot and you just bounce until you cannot bounce any more. I definitely recommend it but an hour is plenty!

The mastered art of
juggling
Somehow all mum’s learn it. We have to. Whether it’s juggling the appointments on the calendar so that all our little darlings end up in the right place at the right time; juggling the housework, the homework and the husband; or juggling a screaming baby in one arm whilst holding the phone in the other and putting shoes on a toddler with that magical third hand all us mums have. Mums are well skilled jugglers of their worlds. I’m sure you agree. When considering what to write
about in this article, it struck me that January can be quite a tough month to juggle for parents. Christmas has come and gone, the decorations are down and the festivities have passed. It’s back to school, back to work and back to reality. A reality of dark mornings, short days, cold, wet and windy weather and more often than not, empty bank accounts. It’s agreed that January is the least lookedforward-to month of the year, SAD is at it’s peak and for most, life so often seems arduous. I can identify, can you? I know when I feel like this I’m not functioning at my best as ‘mum’ and when ‘mum’s’ not on top form, juggling become tough and balls get dropped, even by the best. That’s why this January I’ve committed myself to reconsider the ways I juggle life and look forward with eager anticipation and positivity. I shall divide and conquer from the outset, (she hopes!). I’ve been considering a couple of common situations I juggle in my day to day life and I’ve taken a moment to think about ways I can juggle them well in the light of January. Obviously my plan is that I shall be victorious, calm and collected as I move into February! Picture this...
68 | JANUARY 2016
Situation 1 - we’re up late, breakfast is on-the-go (again) and the day is crammed full; school drop off, baby music group, swimming lessons, coffee with the mumin-law, school pick up and a play date, the other half is working late and lastly I’ve got a committee meeting to attend in the evening. It’s cold and wet outside, my toddler doesn’t want to wear his coat and the thoughts run through my mind, how on earth am I going to get to the end of the day without yelling at the kids or needing to lie down in a dark room to recover from toing and froing of the day? My juggling well recipe for ‘crazy busy days (where burn out or world war 3 could quite easily ensue)’ in January....cancel the coffee, cancel the play date, maybe even skip the music group, swimming lesson and committee meeting. Instead, I’m going to light the fire, sit on the sofa and snuggle up with the little ones. A duvet day once in a while is a healthy retreat, a welcome moment of stillness which invites peace in the chaos. Of no worth will you or I be to those around us if we consistently run ourselves ragged with ‘stuff’ in our calendars. Taking the pressure off ourselves to meet everyone else’s expectations will bring freedom which in turn will enable us to juggle the demanding nature of family life well without disaster.
HOME + LIFESTYLE
Situation 2 - the month of birthdays, the car needing its annual servicing and the kids termly activities bill. The bank account looks bleak and I’m just not sure how we’re going to pay for it all. Every limb is crossed in the hope that the car doesn’t have any major issue brewing under the bonnet and I really don’t want to say ‘no’ to the kids and see their faces disappointed. The pressure of finance seems like a heavy weight on my shoulders. Oh and just one other thing, I should also probably start thinking about how we’re going to pay the final instalment on our summer holiday. Financial pressure has a way of niggling at our very core, making us feel weak and wobbly. Thoughts of ‘will it really be ok?’ running through our minds in the middle of the night. My homemade remedy that I’ll be using in January is...get exercising self control, stick to the budget and don’t over
spend. Make a homemade gift and look at Pinterest for inspiration! It’s the thought that counts and you and I have an opportunity for the life lessons of kindness and giving to be so tangibly shared together with our children. I read a proverb recently that said ‘it’s better to have soup with someone you love than steak with someone you hate! I’m a firm believer in taking a moment to consider and realign my perspective, so maybe, just maybe, less really is more. So, I challenge you master mummy jugglers to join me, change your outlook, give yourself a break, make some memories with the kids and enjoy January 2016.

Mrs Churchill MP said: “Since the Prime Minister was pictured enjoying a pint of Greene King with President Xi Jinping, the export of this fine beer from its home in my Bury St Edmunds constituency to China, has gone up from 3,000 to 50,000 cases. Now, they and other rural exporting businesses within my constituency are keen to learn what help her Department working in conjunction with UK Trade and Investment are doing, to help fund and organise trade shows and business development visits in order to secure the continued trade of the thriving Chinese market?” The Secretary of State for Environment and Rural Affairs, Liz Truss MP responded: “I was in China a few weeks ago. One of the things we were promoting was Greene King in Chong King in fact and we had the biggest ever delegation of UK food companies- over 80 companies were with us on the visit to China with the launch of the Great British Food Unit which brings together UKTI expertise and DEFRA expertise. I expect us to have even more in the future.”

CHURCH NEWS
Southgate Church WE ARE YOUR LOCAL CHURCH BASED IN SOUTHGATE CENTRE SERVING OUR WHOLE COMMUNITY. DO COME AND JOIN US ONE SUNDAY OF FOR ONE OF OUR MANY MID-WEEK ACTIVITIES FOR ALL AGES. CHILDREN ARE PARTICULARLY WELCOME TO OUR SUNDAY CLUB WHICH MEETS BETWEEN 1030 AND 1145. After the rush of Christmas, the early days of a New Year can sometimes feel a bit empty. What do we do? We are told, that in 46 B.C the Roman Emperor Julius Caesar first established January 1 as New Year’s Day. In the days before Jesus, he worshipped a god (Janus) who had two faces, one looked backwards and the other forwards. So he named the month January.
We still do the same today, don’t we? We look backwards, being happy for all the good things which have happened and pleased that the bad stuff is behind us. Then we look forward, hoping that the New Year will bring better things. The truth is that none of us know what 2016 will bring.
Churches and Christians do the same. Looking backward, just a few days, we see the miracle of God’s love in the Christ of Christmas. The Bible tells us that God loves the world so much he sent Jesus. The fact that Jesus visited earth, means that relationships could be started and grow
What are you pleased to have left behind in 2015? What were the high points of last year for you? Who will you thank for them? What are your hopes and dreams for 2016? Who will you trust them to?

The Southgate Wolf Southgate Church Youth Club made a lifesize wolf in celebration of of St Edmund’s Day. The model was put on display outside the Community Centre where people made special detours to see and admire it. Made out of all sorts of materials, the construction was directed by Kelvin Johnson with lots of young people from the Church participating. The wolf also made it along to the Mayor’s charity ball and caused quit a stir! Churches also look forwards to Easter, the proof that Jesus meant what he said, He loves YOU. We hope to run an Alpha course starting on Tuesday 19th January at 7.30pm. This will run for 10 weeks and can include a Saturday. Alpha is a series of interactive sessions that freely explore the basics of the Christian faith and the meaning of life. We will eat a simple meal, watch a DVD followed by open conversations. Alpha is totally free and open to anyone. If you come and find its not for you, that’s fine.

CINEMA LISTINGS
STAR WARS: THE 12A FORCE AWAKENS Director J.J. Abrams
Starring John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, Kenny Baker The seventh Star Wars film kicks off a brilliant new trilogy with new characters and old favourites. It’s three decades on from the events of Return of the Jedi. On the desert planet Jakku, tough loner Rey (Daisy Ridley) plies her trade as a scavenger. Meanwhile, a stormtrooper named Finn (John Boyega) finds himself in great danger, the villainous Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) wields a cool cross-form lightsaber, and an X-Wing pilot named Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) is sent on a mission by “a certain princess”. Star Trek director and long-term Star Wars fan J.J. Abrams brings these intriguing plot strands together with consummate skill to launch a spectacular new trilogy. Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher are among the returning members of the original Star Wars cast. And motion capture king Andy Serkis is also on board as Supreme Leader Snoke, who is very much on the Dark Side of the Force.

SNOOPY AND CHARLIE BROWN: THE PEANUTS MOVIE
PG
Director Steve Martino Starring Francesca Capaldi, Noah Schnapp, Venus Schultheis Charlie Brown and his beagle Snoopy return to charm a new generation in a CGI animation from the director of ‘Ice Age: Continental Drift’. To mark the 65th anniversary of the much-loved ‘Peanuts’ cartoon strip, lovable loser Charlie Brown and his imaginative dog Snoopy make their CGI animated feature debut. This new film is co-written by Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz’s son Craig and grandson Bryan. Director Steve Martino’s credits also include ‘Horton Hears a Who!’
SISTERS 15 Director Jason Moore Starring Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Maya Rudolph, Dianne Weist, James Brolin Comedy sensations Amy Poehler and Tina Fey pair up again for this rib tickling laugh riot. Maura (Amy Poehler) and Katie (Tina Fey) are two siblings who share a close relationship. However, they’re polar opposites: Maura is uptight and divorced whereas Katie is loose and free spirited. Nevertheless, they must overcome their differences after discovering that their parents are selling their beloved childhood home. There’s only one solution: throw an outrageously chaotic and messy party for all their former high school classmates in the place where they grew up. Following their caustic Golden Globes broadcast earlier in 2015, Inside Out and Parks and Recreation star Amy Poehler re-teams with Saturday Night Live stalwart Tina Fey for this riotous story of sisterhood from the director of Pitch Perfect, Jason Moore. Watch out for an amusing cameo from Trainwreck’s John Cena as an oddly tattooed hunk.
