EDITOR’S LETTER

february WELCOME TO THE

ISSUE

Hello and welcome to the February issue of the Southgate Directory. I hope you enjoyed the first issue! Love it or hate it… it’s Valentine’s Day and love is in the air. If you’re having a romantic night in this month, you’ll love our recipes on pages 33 and 34. Going out on the town? Then our restaurant vouchers from Orissa and Zen Noodle Bar might help you save a few quid. There are lots of other Valentine themed features throughout the magazine, but also tons of other interesting articles from your local Southgate community representatives, so grab yourself a cuppa and pop your feet up for a good read. We have a couple of new columnists this month. Molly (on page 69) is just 10 years old, our youngest writer so far! And we’re delighted to welcome on board the lovely Linda Kenneally (on page 28), who is bravely battling breast cancer and is sharing her journey with us. And quite frankly, we think she’s amazing. Hope you have a great February and see you all in March! Find us on Facebook & Twitter: Moreton Hall Directory

This month I love.. BOURJOIS HEALTHY MIX SERUM FOUNDATION

£10.99 (AVAILABLE AT BOOTS & SUPERDRUG) I have loved the Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum Foundation for a long time, but this month it has made my favourite list mainly because of another foundation I tried. For Christmas, I got a bottle of the Nars Sheer Glow foundation that I’d wanted to try for ages, but it’s quite high end with a price tag of £31, so I thought I’d ask for it as a gift. I didn’t hate Nars Sheer Glow, but I have to say, for me, I prefer the Bourjois Healthy Mix (above), and it’s a snip of the price of Nars, I think it makes this a bit of a bargain. I have super dry skin, and Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum Foundation’s fresh and instant blending gel texture blends and glides onto the skin for an even, natural finish with no mask effect. Imperfections are erased, signs of fatigue are smoothed and the skin’s radiance is boosted for up to 16 hours.

LOCAL NEWS

LOCAL BUDGET Don’t forget if you are a community group or involved in a local project and need funding that you can apply to our locality budgets for small amounts.

NEW PLAYGROUND

We reported in the last issue that St Edmundsbury Borough Council have named the “Nowton Pit” playground as a priority for them to revamp this year. We have now had several meetings to push this project forward and by the time you read this the contract will be out to tender. We are both keen that local residents should be involved in deciding what equipment we have and what the park looks like so we have asked for a public meeting of the Nowton Neighbourhood Residents Association (NNRA) on Tuesday 3rd March at 6.30pm in the Southgate Community Centre to discuss the plans. Officers from the Council will bring plans with them and this is a great chance for you to have your say – all local residents are welcome so we hope to see you there. We are hoping the new park will be in place before the summer holidays.

Parking We are pleased to report that Suffolk County Council Highways Team have now sent out letters to consult on several parking restrictions around the area which should address some of the concerns raised around hospital parking. These measures include addressing the issues on Home Farm Lane outside The Macebearer where parking has recently escalated leading to serious safety concerns and problems with bus access. If all goes according to plan and there aren’t serious objections, we are hopeful that these restrictions will be implemented by late spring but Sarah is chasing as your County Councillor to make sure this happens.

HARDWICK LANE RESURFACING We are pleased to be able to confirm that after a long wait Hardwick Lane is finally about to be resurfaced. The work will take place between 9th and 14th February and there will be a short diversion in place between 7pm and 5am each night as the road will be closed at those times.

And finally…. have your say in May! Thursday May 7th this year will see the General election being held on the same day as the Borough and Town Council elections for the first time. This means that in Southgate, you will be asked to vote for your MP, two Borough Councillors and two Town Councillors all on one day. That’s a lot of ballot papers! Don’t forget that if you are likely to be away for the election or may find it difficult to get to the polling station, you can apply now for a postal vote which can be completed and sent in before the election. You can find out how at www.westsuffolk.gov.uk/council/voting_and_elections or by calling 01284 763233. Whoever you vote for, please do make the time to vote – your voice matters.

W hat’s been happening at...

HARDWICK Primary School The children (and staff) have returned to school with an eagerness to learn and they are very excited about their new topics. The children in Key Stage 2 were being newspaper reporters this week, reporting on an alien landing! We had green goo, alien eggs, police tape round areas and a visit from PCSO Oliver setting the scene for the story. The subsequent writing produced was great. As I write this I am on my way to the Natural History Museum in London with 100 Key Stage One children to learn about dinosaurs and mammals.

They are all very excited and have also seen the London landmarks too. Making the curriculum fun and the learning exciting, plus enhancing this with educational visits is very important to us, and it is these experiences the children will remember and look back fondly on in years to come. We’ll be back next month with more news from Hardwick Primary School. Best wishes

Dear reader, Specialist team helps 1,000 return home more quickly A specialist team which ensures the right health and social care support is in place to allow older patients to return home from hospital more quickly has been hailed a success after helping more than 1,000 people in the past six months.

The team works by ensuring the right help is in place to allow patients to return home more quickly after they have received their treatment and are clinically fit. This could include specialist equipment, additional care, help with domestic activities or ongoing community healthcare support.

By bringing together different health and social care organisations, the team is ensuring everyone can receive joined-up, high quality, targeted and safe care which meets their individual needs and reduces their length of stay.”

The ‘one-stop shop’ service is not only helping to avoid unnecessary admissions into hospital, but is also ensuring those who do need care on a ward do not need to stay as long. Gylda Nunn, integrated therapies manager at the hospital, said: “The EIT has been a great success, and helps an average of 35 patients every week to return home more quickly. We do this by ensuring patients see the appropriate professionals at the

Gareth Blissett, team lead, added: “This seven day service fully meets the needs of a growing older population by ensuring everything is in place for a safe and successful discharge. The feedback we have received from patients so far has been fantastic, with many saying the support provided by the team gave them the confidence they needed to go home, where they feel most comfortable.”

LOCAL NEWS

from Nowton Neighbourhood Residents Association (NNRA) Since our article in the first edition of the Southgate Directory we’ve received some very exciting news. At our January Residents Association Public Meeting Councillor Sarah Stamp announced that the play park, known to some of you as the tip or the dump, is being refurbished. St Edmundsbury Borough Council has agreed to fund this at a cost of £60,000 and Sarah has offered an additional £5,000 from her locality budget towards this project. The work will commence after April 2015. We met with St Edmundsbury Borough Council and Melanie Lesser from Bury in Bloom last week and the council has agreed to allow us to develop the wooded area in Home Farm Lane behind the shopping precinct into a community garden. If you would like to volunteer to help with this please email nowtonnra@ gmail.com These two projects are the biggest and most exciting things to happen on the Nowton Estate for a number of years. Please, if you can, support them.

Parking is an ongoing problem in our area and Suffolk County Council will be consulting local residents, where appropriate, regarding possible parking restrictions. Further information on all the above can be found on our website www. nowton-nnra.org.uk where you can also become a member of the NNRA, subscription is £2.50 per household per year. This will help with the running costs of the association and enable the committee to support events and projects within the community. If you have a problem or an issue you would like help with please email us and we will do all we can to assist in resolving it. Date for your diary - NNRA Public Meeting Tuesday 3rd March 6.30pm at Southgate Community Centre where the play park will be on the Agenda. Bring your children along so they can have their say on the development of the park. Ann Williamson Chairman FEBRUARY 2015 | 13

hedgehogs on moreton hall BY WOODLANDS WAY

B

ack in June, in an article in Moreton Hall Directory, you were invited to record your hedgehog sightings on Suffolk Wildlife Trust’s website. One hundred and twenty three records of hedgehogs have now been made in Moreton Hall, with records coming from across the whole housing estate. Some records were of happy adults going about their business, but others were of too-small-to-hibernate youngsters in winter, or of dead hedgehogs in the road. It’s hard to tell how numbers have changed, but in the late 1990s one could drive round after dusk in summer or autumn and see numerous hedgehogs on any of the wider road verges across Moreton Hall. This autumn the same activity resulted in rarely seeing a hedgehog. Where have they gone? Undoubtedly the exapnsion of housing into

countryside will have an effect, and increasing traffic may have increased mortality above the replacement rate. But other, more subtle, factors might make a difference. Is your garden very tidy, with no long grass, piles of leaves, compost heap or vegetable patch for hedgehogs to feed? Or are your fences well built and there’s nowhere for a hedgehog to get in? To restore the availability of your garden to hedgehogs, dig a hole under your fence, around 13 - 15cm wide and deep, or carefully cut away the bottom of your fence to make the same size hole. If you are worried about cats getting out (or in), a small tunnel such as placing a hollow concrete block in front of the hole will make it very difficult for the cat but easy for the hedgehogs. The total area of gardens is bigger than the area of community woodlands, and every garden counts!

Join us at Woodland Ways... Why not join in with a Woodland Ways work party to help improve the Moreton Hall woods? No experience is needed and all are welcome; we’ll show you what to do. For more information please see www.woodlandways.org.uk, see the Woodland Ways noticeboard in the Community Centre, contact Nick Sibbett on 01284 723847 or email information@woodlandways.org.uk.

JANUARY 2015 | 15

At our January meeting we welcomed some new members and toasted in the New Year with our usual Buck’s Fizz or fruit juice. There is a lot going on in 2015 including the resolutions to consider for later in the year so we did our voting on these. Our talk was from PC Lawrence Allen who leads the local Safer Neighbourhood Team. We heard about how the PCSOs work and provide our frontline of contact for non-urgent community matters or concerns. Various local issues were aired but the SNT are aware of them and priorities for addressing these are regularly reviewed. The talk was very interesting and relating to local issues made it really relevant to us all! Happy New Year to everyone!

Welcome to the 19th hole, a place for golf tips, reviews and everything golf related.

I trust that the new year is being good to you all. Although it’s been a cold start to the year I hope you’re all managing to venture out on the course whether it be at your own course or having a nice away day to other golf club. I hope the new year’s resolutions are still going well, for those of you that have made golf resolutions or goals I hope you have written these down and put things in place to help you achieve these. If however this time of year you can’t find the time to practice and play, or even bring yourself to be cold for a long period of time. There are still things you can do in the house to keep your hand in.

Coaches Tip - Build Your Own Putting Green So it’s cold and wintery outside and you do not like the idea of standing on the practice green at the golf club. Firstly I don’t blame you, but that doesn’t mean you can’t practice your putting from the comfort of your own home. All you need to practice your putting at home is some golf balls and your putter, the rest you will already have around the house. Here I have two drills for you to try both of which will allow you to work on an aspect of your putting game. This practice just may make the difference on course when the weather improves.

• The aim is to get the ball to finish as close to the wall without hitting the wall. • Any ball that contacts the wall is removed and closest point is marked. • Then repeat and try and beat your previous best result. • Once you have masters this distance move closer or further away.

NEW Nike Vapor Product Launch Nike golf have released their new vapor range of clubs on the 31st January, these clubs have been long awaited by the golf industry as Nike continue their advancement in golf. The vapor range see’s Nike golf using striking colour VOLT to highlight the technology in the range. These products have been produced under close supervision on the some of the world’s best players including Tiger Woods and Rory Mcilory. As you can see from the images there are three models in both in irons and wood range, so there is someone for everyone. Why not give this product a try, your nearest Nike Golf retailer is Bury Golf Range where they can show and explain these products to you in more detail.

Drill 1: Find a good area of carpet or open floor space, and practice your aim/alignment. • Pick anything to aim at, a chair leg, or a mug for example. • Start close to the object, trying to hit it or roll into the mug. • Every time you make a successful putt, move back a foot. If you miss come back to where you were. • See how far away from the object you can get in 10 balls. • Record your score and try again later. • You can make this drill harder by upping the amount of successful putts made before moving back to the next point. Drill 2: This drill is designed to help you with your pace of putts. • Find an area where there is an open wall at one end.

Coming Next Month My first course and facility review, I will be reviewing the world class resort of Celtic manor. This facility staged the 2010 Ryder Cup and boosts three fantastic 18 holes courses and a 5 star hotel. I am looking forward to my visit and I will report back to you all next month with how the experience went. Let’s hope we can all get out on the course, if the weather intervenes then set up your own indoor practice and make the most of your new nice warm practice facility. For more coaching advice or book a lesson please feel free to contact me. Quote MHD for £5 off your first golf lesson with me.

Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to experiment with your make up look and to impress your true love. Whether you are hitting the town or spending a romantic evening in, looking your best will make you feel great. Your make up should be fun and flawless with an emphasis on natural beauty...

Cosy night in: Bright coloured lips When dinner by the fireplace and cuddles are a part of your Valentine’s Day plans, expect your lips to be the focus of his attention. Nothing says “kiss me” like a bright coloured lipstick. If you choose to wear a bold red, keep the rest of your look simple and clean. If a bright lipstick makes you feel a little bit outside your comfort zone, simply dab the lipstick onto your lips with your fingertips. This technique will control the amount of pigment, softening the look and allowing you to create a custom lip stain. Even more kissable!

Out on the town: Smokey eyes It’s fun to create a smouldering eye that will stand out during a candlelit dinner at your favourite restaurant. The moodier the lighting, the more dramatic you can take things. The secret is to play up the eyes, while keeping the cheeks and lips neutral. A soft pink or peachy blush, along with a complementary lipstick or gloss, will complete this romantic look. 22 | FEBRUARY 2015

JOE

MY NAME IS JOE SADLER AND I HAVE BEEN A QUALIFIED PERSONAL TRAINER FOR 5 YEARS, WORKING FROM THE MORETON HALL HEALTH CLUB.

It’s been a pleasure training Matt, committing fully to the programme and nutrition plan. I wonder what you could achieve? When I first started training with Joe I had not done any serious exercise or eaten properly for a considerable time. Within 6 months I had run a sub 4 hour marathon, sub 20min 5k and sub 45min 10k. My physique had changed dramatically as had I as a person. My energy levels were higher, mood was better and I found the confidence to take on any challenge put in front of me. Joe is a great guy to train for, he works you harder than you realise you can whilst respecting your limits. If you follow his instruction you will achieve amazing results physically and mentally, call him now!

Beating Breast Cancer It has been estimated that more than 1 in 3 of us will develop cancer at some point in our lifetime, and most of know someone who has been affected. Please meet our new columnist, Linda Kenneally, who is sharing her own journey after being diagnosed with Breast Cancer in October 2014… Can I imagine my life without my new pet kitten in it…NO! Can I imagine my life once I beat Breast Cancer this year….YES ! My diagnosis of Breast Cancer came in October 2014. To say it was a bolt out of the blue was an understatement. I’m in my mid forties, healthy and had just started on a new journey in my life going back to college and taking on a 3 year Naturopathic Nutrition course. Being relatively strong and self reliant as a person, I dealt with the news pragmatically right from the beginning… the tears came later and reality for me is still kicking in each day. No decision based on a health issue is an easy one to make, and for me the journey right from the start has been a difficult one. My life can never be simple! Once I had all of the relevant tests and scan results in and the bigger picture became clearer, my decision making kicked into place a little too prematurely and what I thought would be a straight forward route was not to be. The type of breast cancer I have is a more aggressive, hard to treat and especially fast growing one – triple negative. The plus side, according to various scans, the cancer is confined to the breast and thankfully had not metastasised to any other organs or my lymph nodes – positive news that it has been caught early enough! I had a fair amount of awareness 28 | FEBRUARY 2015

on surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy (otherwise known as cut, poison and burn!) and whilst I understand that the cancer would have to come out, for me having to deal with the chemotherapy side of the decision process has been the hardest to date. In my simple mind, it was a case of cut out the cancer and let me continue on my complimentary and nutritional lifestyle and all will be fine and dandy, it would all be gone and won’t return and that will be that… NO to chemotherapy and NO to radiotherapy – I will take more responsibility for my health and lifestyle! In my case surgery first was not an option. Decision one taken away from me (not good when you generally are in control of what happens in your life). My belief system has been tested from the start. My body can cure this without all the chemicals surely? Eventually after lots of research and various discussions with the medical professionals, the decision was taken – compromise. Utilise and maximize both the medical and the complimentary to beat this. Accept that my body will have to have the chemotherapy, but do everything I can to help the process. I had my first chemotherapy on Monday, 8th December and as confidently as I could… kept telling myself that whilst the drugs were going in, it was all positive and that it was doing wonders for my body and helping it to defeat the cancer.

Linda Kenneally

It didn’t get off to a great start and within 5 days I was admitted to hospital. All I will say is that I don’t want to experience the pain that I went through again and will do everything possible to avoid it for the future! I was discharged 4 days later and then came the biggest shock to the system – HAIR LOSS. My little mind had been built up that the majority of hair loss would come from the second chemotherapy – therefore, hooray – I would at least get Christmas with my hair. Not the case, and probably the start of the real tears of emotion for me. If I had a penny for everyone that said “it’s just hair it will grow back”. Everyone is individual, but as a woman it is heartbreaking believe me. One thing I know for sure… I look like an alien without any hair! I am however thankful that I haven’t inherited my father’s ears which both my brother and sister have! The good thing with me is that I would say I am relatively stylish and so I was already increasing my scarf and hat draw collections! Thank the Lord for the Christmas sales! And thankfully I had already been organized enough to purchase a couple of lovely long wigs. As upsetting as it was when I lost my long hair, my concern now is hanging onto my eyelashes and eyebrows. The hairs that are falling out naturally are not growing back but I still have them currently and with my research I have been using castor oil each day to try and hang on to them. Castor oil is high in ricinoleic acid. This

HEALTH & BEAUTY

acid is a very effective natural anti-bacterial and anti-fungal agent. It can help keep any fungus or bacteria from inhibiting hair growth. Since the oil is also very thick, it may help to prevent hair loss simply by helping to coat the hair and protect it from falling out. Castor oil is also high in omega 9 fatty acids, which are nourishing to the hair and the follicle, as well as the surrounding skin. This will be used once I finish all my chemotherapy treatment to help my hair grow back! There are many possible side effects with chemotherapy and these vary dependent on the type of drug given. The 2 definites that I was told about would be hair loss and fatigue, of which I am experiencing both. I have never had to take steroids before, but having to take them for a short period during chemotherapy I am wide awake all night and buzzing – my house is sparkling, my washing and ironing are done, I have gone through my wardrobes and had a declutter also, and have been to the recycling centre a couple of times! After my first treatment I also experienced loss of taste, nothing I ate or drank made a difference – I was adding garlic and chilli to a lot of meals! I also had a couple of mouth ulcers. Tea tree oil has been utilized for it’s antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral properties. I came down with a bad sore throat, cold and cough before Xmas, had an allergy to some of the antibiotics and had severe bone pain from the injections that I was having to take. That combined with the sickness and my hospital stay was not a good start! Thankfully after my second treatment at the beginning of January, I haven’t suffered as much. I have a red itchy rash on my torso – probably a reaction to the overload of chemicals and my body trying to get rid of it through my skin. Again I am using some natural and homeopathic remedies to help combat it. I am starting to experience some pain in my fingertips and toes, which is related to the nerves and am currently looking at what I can do to alleviate this. Aside from feeling a little whoozy on a daily basis, I am a lot more positive so far and generally am feeling ok and just taking each day as it comes. My next treatment is at the end of January all being well with my blood test results. My approach to this will be three fold – through dietary recommendations and adaptations, through lifestyle changes and through supplementation of therapeutic good quality nutritional and homeopathic supplementation.

Suffolk to host opening stage of Friends Life Women’s Tour in 2015 The second edition of the widely acclaimed Friends Life Women’s Tour is to begin where the inaugural race finished, in Bury St Edmunds. The 2015 Friends Life Women’s Tour will start off where the inaugural edition finished last May, as Bury St Edmunds and Suffolk welcome the opening stage of the race on Wednesday 17 June. The opening stage will take 100 of the world’s top female cyclists across the county, in a stage entirely within Suffolk, finishing in the coastal town of Aldeburgh. The stage will start from Angel Hill in the heart of Bury St Edmunds, where Marianne Vos won the final stage and the overall Friends Life Yellow Jersey in May 2014, with further details of the Stage One route to be announced in the coming weeks. Also taking place in Bury St Edmunds will be a free-to-attend team presentation event, the evening before the opening stage, on Tuesday 16 June, giving fans the chance to see the world’s top teams and riders who will be taking part in the Friends Life Women’s Tour. Cllr Sara Mildmay-White, Deputy Leader of St Edmundsbury Borough Council said; “The 2014 Friends Life Women’s Tour was one of last year’s highlights, and I am delighted that this world class event will be returning to Bury St Edmunds. Watching athletes at the top of their sport is exhilarating and the event has a terrific atmosphere. I hope it is also inspirational and many more women will be persuaded of the benefits of getting on their bikes and enjoying our very special part of Suffolk.” The second edition of the Friends Life Women’s Tour takes place from Wednesday 17 – Sunday 21 June, again taking place over five stages with daily highlights from ITV4. 30 | FEBRUARY 2015

Councillor Alan Murray, Suffolk County Council’s cabinet member for health and adult care, said: “It is extremely exciting that the Friends Life Women’s Tour is returning to Suffolk and starting where last year’s climaxed. Last year Bury St Edmunds was filled with thousands of spectators eagerly awaiting the race finish and we expect this year’s event to be just as spectacular. “The Friends Life Women’s Tour provides a fantastic opportunity to showcase the county’s picturesque towns, villages and countryside as World and Olympic champions pass through Suffolk’s local communities. “The announcement comes at an exciting time, as Sport England launch ‘This Girl Can’, a campaign celebrating active women. The campaign encourages women whatever their ability, size or previous experience that sport can be a fun and enjoyable part of their lives. We hope the return of the Friends Life Women’s Tour will help inspire more women across the county to take up cycling or some form of sport and physical activity, assisting us in our bid to become the most active county in England.” Cllr TJ Haworth-Culf, Suffolk Coastal District Council’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for Customers, Communities and Leisure, said; “Suffolk Coastal is delighted to be able to continue to support the Friends Life Women’s Tour. This allows us to give a boost to the beautiful seaside town of Aldeburgh, bringing in extra tourism and raising the profile of the town and the entire District, while also encouraging people to have healthier lifestyles. I am sure the people of Aldeburgh, and those along the entire route, will turn out to support this exceptional event.” The opening stage will be supported by Adnams, who are

now a well-established local partner for both the Friends Life Women’s Tour and Friends Life Tour of Britain when it visits Suffolk. Emma Hibbert, Head of Corporate Affairs at Adnams said; “Adnams is delighted to be involved in the Friends Life Women’s Tour once again. Last year’s inaugural event was a terrific success and proved the popularity of cycling, for women and men, elite and recreational, continues to grow. To see so many of the world’s top female cyclists whizzing along our county’s roads was a real inspiration to us all. The Friends Life Women’s Tour is an event which Adnams is proud to support and excited to see return.” In 2014 in addition to the final stage finish in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk Coastal also hosted the Start of Stage Three, also won by Marianne Vos, which started in Felixstowe. Commenting on the announcement of the first 2015 stage, Friends Life Women’s Tour Race Director Mick Bennett said; “After the great success of last year’s race it is fitting that we will be starting off the second edition of the Friends Life Women’s Tour from where the 2014 Tour finished. Last year’s race surpassed all of our expectations and thanks to the support of Suffolk County Council, Bury St Edmunds and Suffolk Coastal, we know this year’s will start off on a similarly high-level.”

Further details on the remainin g venues and stages for the 2015 Friends Life Women’s Tour will be announced over the coming wee The full list of 16 teams for the ks. Friends Life Women’s Tour will be confirmed during the Spring.

Pan roasted duck breasts

with raspberry sauce

Ingredients: 4 duck breast fillets 2 teaspoons sea salt 4 teaspoons demerara sugar 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 100ml (4 fl oz) red wine 4 tablespoons crème de cassis liqueur 1 teaspoon cornflour 100g (4 oz) raspberries

Use a knife to score the duck breasts through the skin and fat but not all the way through to the meat. Heat a large heavy frying pan on medium high. Fry the duck breasts skin side down, until the skin browns and fat is released, about 10 minutes. Remove the breasts from the pan, and pour off most of the fat. Mix the sea salt, cinnamon and demerara sugar together and sprinkle over the skin of the duck. Return breasts to pan, and fry skin side up for another 10 minutes, or until desired doneness. Turn over once and sprinkle with more of the sugar mixture, and cook 1 minute more. Remove breasts from pan and allow to rest. Mix together the red wine, crème de cassis and cornflour in a small bowl. Pour into the pan, and simmer for 3 minutes, stirring constantly, until the sauce is thickened. Add raspberries, and simmer for another minute until heated through. Slice the duck breasts thinly, pour a little sauce over the top, and serve warm.

Local boy, Alfie Campbell, has had a successful 2014 at Red Lodge Karting From the age of 6 Alfie has been Karting. In February 2014 Alfie joined the Young Starz at Red Lodge Karting. Within a year he has worked his way up through the grading system to achieve Grade 1, which has enabled him to race competitively. After competing in Endurance Racing over the winter months and in all conditions he has now made the grade to join Club 2000, a very competitive race series for talented young racers. Alfie will be competing in the Honda Cadet Class. He will be one of the youngest drivers on the grid and racing up against older more experienced drivers.

One of the highlights of 2014 was meeting Robert ‘Rob’ Huff 2012 World Touring Car Champion, who started his career at Red Lodge Karting. WHAT NEXT FOR MORTGAGE RATES? Attention all homeowners! With expectations of a first interest rate rise moving back, there are now some very cheap rate mortgage deals on offer. Fixed rate mortgages look particularly attractive at the moment, with some lenders even re-introducing 10 year fixed rate options. If you have a 40% deposit or equity in your home, a 5 year fixed rate of 2.44% is available, with a 10 year fixed option at 2.94%. If you have a 25% deposit there is a 5 year rate at 3.09% or a 10 year fixed at 3.99%. Landlords too, need not feel left out, with Buy To Let rates with a deposit of 25% of 5 year fixed at 3.89% or a 2 year tracker at 2.69%. Mortgage rates have been driven down by a combination of low inflation, expectation that economic growth will slow and the heat coming out of the property market especially in London. Banks and Building Societies, have now largely got to grips with tougher new mortgage rules introduced in April 2014, which slowed lending noticeably. By offering lower rates they hope to catch-up and meet, this years lending targets. Todays lower rates may stay around, or even inch a little lower, but they may also be withdrawn at short notice.

So if your New Year resolution was to reduce monthly outgoings, or your existing deal is nearing its end, now may be the perfect time to review your current mortgage deal.

Exciting Community Arts Project comes to Bury St Edmunds for Spring 2015

Y

A o Suffolk YMCA is coordinating a new and exciting Community Arts project called ‘Who Do You Think I Am?’ to be held in Bury St Edmunds at the end of March. The project aims to tackle the negative images of young people we see in the media and to promote positive images of both older and younger people in the eyes of the public. YMCA Youth Worker Louise Jolly, who is based in Bury, is bringing young people aged 16-19 years together with older people from the town, to create an exhibition of printmaking with funding and support from the Community Safety Partnership, The Apex and local arts organisation Oyster Press. Louise is working with Oyster Press, because it is an arts organisation which brings printmaking out into the community and encourages, stimulates, and supports participants to explore their creativity in a safe and comfortable environment. Oyster Press has worked on many community arts projects before. Their project co-ordinator Alison Smyth said “We are looking forward to delivering a first class exhibition in Bury St Edmunds that will be both enjoyable and thought provoking for visitors. Response to the project from various groups in Bury has been excellent with a good turn out for the free taster sessions on printmaking that were offered to the public at the beginning of January.” 42 | FEBRUARY 2015

Participants in the community arts project will be attending free art workshops with Oyster Press at The Apex, from the 27th January. These workshops will introduce participants to printmaking, the earliest form of mass communication, where they will learn to create professional pieces of art for the exhibition. Through the workshops older and younger people will have an opportunity to create both great art and positive friendships, whilst breaking down negative stereotypes of young people. As well as using one of the oldest forms of media (printing) in the workshops, participants will also explore modern technology (camera’s) to add an extra edge to the project, with short films going onto social media sites that all ages can enjoy.

BOOK NOW for beer, curry, comedy and fundraising Tickets are on sale now for a comedy night in celebration of a well-known Bury St Edmunds man. It is hoped more than 400 people will attend the third Phil’s Big Comedy Night, in memory of Philip Scarff.

The Beer, Curry, Comedy-themed evening event is being held at the new South Lee Sports Hall, in Bury St Edmunds, on Friday 6 February 2015. A number of major comedy acts will be performing, including Geoff Norcott, Joe Rowntree and The Noise Next Door.

Philip, of Onehouse, was killed in an accident while cycling along Old London Road, Copdock, in August 2010. He had spent the day with family at Jimmy’s Farm and was cycling home when he was involved in a collision with a 4x4.

Claire Butler, St Nicholas Hospice Care Major Gifts Manager, said: “We are delighted Philip’s friends and family have kindly thought of the Hospice when organising what promises to be a fantastic evening. We are very grateful for their support.

To remember him, his friends and family launched the annual comedy night in his memory and to raise funds for St Nicholas Hospice Care and the South Lee Parent Teachers Association.

“The funds raised at the Beer, Curry, Comedy evening will help the Hospice to support patients facing long term and life-threatening illnesses, and their families.”

Tickets cost £42 per person, including a curry feast, entertainment and disco. To book, go to www.philsbigcomedynight.com or call 01284 715055.

boot camp

BY ANDREW SOUTHWOOD

I

don’t know about you, but I find myself at a real loose end at 6:15am on Monday mornings. I mean, there’s nothing on the telly, the kids don’t want to play, and apparently it’s not the best time to start sorting the kitchen cupboards out? With this in mind, I decided I might as well see what all the commotion was about at an early morning Boot Camp session. It was with some relief I spotted (or rather, was blinded by) the temporary flood lights and a gaggle of slightly crazy fellow trainees, ready and waiting for an early morning work out on the community centre field. Despite my suspicions, it was not a cruel trick – the class did exist. The sun was still some distance below the horizon, and the frost was sparkling under the halogen bulbs, but that just added to the ‘fun’. I thought I was fit. That is to

54 | FEBRUARY 2015

say I go running and cycling quiet a bit. It was with this base level of general fitness and confidence that meant, after the first session, I arrived home and casually told my wife it “wasn’t too bad”, and “I didn’t feel that knackered”. Oh boy, how I lived to eat those words!

normal again) I was ready for session two. This went well, and then the third and fourth followed, with some snow, a bit of ice, and lots of mud, but not too much pain. My body began to forgive me and seemed to be benefitting greatly from the work outs.

After being lulled into a false sense of security, my body waited about 36 hours before it reminded me that, having not done a press up or star jump in 20 years, I was now awakening muscles long since forgotten. So, on Wednesday morning I needed a hoist to lift me out of bed and help putting my socks on. Within a couple of days I felt like I’d been run over by a herd of stampeding highland cattle and then used as a punch bag… in a good way!?

So there we have it. I have surprised myself and have found that, contrary to my instincts, communal non-competitive exercise can actually be enjoyable and motivating. A real mix of people, with everyone working at their own pace, just battling against themselves, not competing with anyone else. Presumably, like me, they all attend with their own personal aims and goals. Whatever they are, let’s hope we all not only achieve, but surpass them.

All this of course gave me extra motivation. So, 6 days later (the length of time it took me to feel vaguely

CADET OF THE YEAR 2014 Sgt. Swadling from Newmarket Army Cadet Force presents cadet David Garton with his trophy for his outstanding performance throughout 2014. We teach various subjects throughout the year including skill at arms, map reading, field craft, first aid and cadet in the community to name but a few. Cadet Garton was picked from a strong short-list from within his detachment, by consistantly attending weekend camps and parade nights (every Tuesday night 7-9pm) and leading by example to some of our newest cadets, our motto is “inspire to achieve and cadet Garton certainly did this last year and we expect him to continue this into 2015. If you would like to see what the Army cadets are all about why not pop along Tuesday 7pm at Rayes Lane in Newmarket, you must be at least 12 years old and in year 8.

Moreton Hall Preparatory School

The Second Most Important Thing to Learn at School

Simon Head

Last month I described Challenge as being an essential part of the perfect school sandwich. Next month I look forward to talking about the bread: the element providing the scaffolding for everything else. But what comes between? The second most important thing to learn at school is to love to read. Reading takes care of everything. It helps your child brush shoulders with knowledge, expression and adventure. Reading allows a pupil to develop a personal relationship with learning, providing consolidation and extension in equal and generous measure. Wanting to read enhances this process consummately. The development of this appetite is the single most important learning quest a child can undertake. To encourage this pursuit, there are several strategies that parents and schools should deploy together. Surround your children with books. School and public libraries should be familiar haunts, but ideally a book should keep your child company wherever they go. The book itself is not too important. It’s lovely to pretend you’ve read Tess of the d’Urbevilles, but it’s much more valuable to enjoy being fully immersed in an easier novel and keen to pick up another. Sometimes that next novel should be by the same author, or from the same genre, other times it should be a different kettle of fish. Children like to be completists. This can help them follow a particular set of tracks a considerable distance, but to switch lines a good reading list can help. This link (http:// www.moretonhallprep.org/wp-content/ uploads/2013/09/Reading-Lists.pdf) offers an atlas of options; to save your fingers Google ‘Moreton Hall reading list’ instead. Finally, do not underestimate how much children enjoy being read to - or how much they (and you) get from this. It may even be the most important thing they can learn away from school.

garden confidential BY PAUL CLARKE

PAULS PLANT OF THE MONTH

Amaryllis

Large 6 to 10 inch trumpet shaped flowers emerge from the top of 1 to 2 foot stalks. The growth of the stalks is rapid and amazing to see . A wide choice of colours can be obtained from these bulbs including red , pink, white, salmon, apricot and rose, Choose the largest bulbs and when planting select a pot about an inch larger than that of the bulb. After the flowers have faded, cut them off to prevent seed formation. Do not remove the flower stalk until it has turned yellow . When all danger of frost is past, acclimate the plant to the outdoors by first placing it in shade. Then move to a bed where it will receive full sun. Amaryllis plants should be brought indoors before the first frost in the Autumn.

What to do in your garden in February By February many of us are itching for the arrival of longer days and Spring so we can spend more time in the garden. Often if we are to get to snow in Suffolk this is the month it arrives . The old saying is very apt “ If February give much snow a fine summer it doth foreshow. However there is nothing to stop you from doing some planning ahead for the year by ordering some of those free garden catalogues to get some inspiration on what to grow and plant. Even in a few minutes in your garden, in February, doing some of the following tasks will help you to get on top of your garden and improve your health.

pauls jobs for the month Flower Garden

General Maintenance

• Winter flowering pansies provide some welcome colour as long as you make sure to regular deadhead spent flowers

• On a dry day it is always rewarding to tidy up your borders by removing any dead growth from your perennials. Compost any dead material and if you have some compost mulch around your plants.

• Prune wisteria back to 2-3 buds from the main stems. • Cut down the stems of dogwoods close to the base this might seem harsh but will lead to lots of new vibrant growth

• Check outdoor containers are regularly watered, particularly those sheltered by house porches or eaves. • Hang bird feeders to attract birds into your fruit trees. As a thank you the birds will feed on any overwintering pests in your fruit trees such as woolly aphids • Clean moss and slippery algae from steps and paving • Cut back ivy on walls on walls and fences it will look much better for a tidy up and it best to do early before any birds begin nesting.

This months poem...

• Prune Winter Jasmine Vegetable and Fruit Garden • You can sow early varieties of broad beans, parsnips, peas shallots, spinach cabbage and turnip. Only do this if the weather conditions are mild and you have prepared the soil. Remember you can warm up a section of earth by putting down some black polythene . • If you have rhubarb it is time to force it.

• Prune Mahonia you can cut back the oldest stems • If you haven’t done so already prune back your hydrangeas to remove dead flower heads back to a strong bud • Summer flowering clematis should be pruned. • Sweet Peas can be sown indoors in pots • Buddleias can be given a good prune cutting the growth down to around 2-3 foot

“Rich meanings of the prophet-Spring adorn, Unseen, this colourless sky of folded showers, And folded winds; no blossom in the bowers;, A poet’s face asleep in this grey morn. Now in the midst of the old world forlorn, A mystic child is set in these still hours. I keep this time, even before the flowers,, Sacred to all the young and the unborn.” ALICE MEYNELL, IN FEBRUARY

7 YEAR OLD’S

A CURE FOR

Christmas Wish

EBOLA

Local company Frames Conservatories Direct (FCD) have always been enthusiastic about getting involved with the local community and supporting charitable events. Whether that’s providing kit for local football teams or being the main Club Sponsor at Bury Rugby Club – giving something back to the community which welcomes them is hugely important. This Christmas they wanted to do something special for primary school children in the area so ran a Christmas Bauble colouring competition and were touched by one particular entry. The competition was to design a Christmas bauble to win pantomime tickets. To add a bit more interest for children, the reverse of the bauble invited them to reveal their Christmas Wish in order that it could be passed on to Santa. FCD received an amazing 550 entries to the competition and chose 9 winners to receive family tickets to the pantomime. The ‘wishes’ ranged from little brothers to Xboxes and from Frozen dresses to snow! Out of all the entries received however, one child’s Christmas Wish stood out from the rest.

Freya Woodcock age 7 from Fordham

Primary School simply wished for a cure for Ebola. Not something you would expect from a 7 year old girl. The staff at Frames Conservatories Direct were so touched by this that they decided to make her a special winner. Instead of family tickets to see Cinderella they upgraded her to a box in the Upper Circle for her and 5 members of her

family to enjoy the performance. In addition to that, and more importantly, they made a donation of £150 to the Ebola Crisis Fund in Freya’s name. When the team contacted Freya’s mum Sarah to tell her how touched they were by her wish Sarah explained that Freya’s awareness of Ebola was bought about seeing news coverage “Freya had seen and heard about Ebola on the news and was asking questions so I explained to her in the simplest way I could what the crisis was all about and how people were suffering. I too was touched when she chose to put a cure for Ebola as her Christmas Wish – I’m very proud of her” Adrian Lewis, Managing Director at FCD says “We had in the back of our minds that if there was a wish we could grant for a particular child we would. We never imagined that it would be a wish like this. While we can’t deliver a cure we hope that the donation on Freya’s behalf will help the cause in providing treatment, clean water, and protective equipment and hygiene kits. We think Freya is a very special little girl”.

book review:

iphone 6s

‘Girl Online’ By Zoe Sugg

The newest iPhone is the iPhone 6s. It is so big, your hand can only just about fit around it! People say that the iPhone 6s bends, but it does not really bend, if might if you sat on it!

This is a new book by youtuber Zoe Sugg (aka Zoella) and it is called ‘Girl Online’. I highly recommend it to all you girls! It is all about a girl called Penny and a boy called Elliot. They live next door to each other and their rooms are adjoining. They have a secret knock code and the amount of knocks they do means different words. Penny suffers with panic attacks because of a mean girl called Megan. It is like she is out to destroy Penny’s life, she is so mean but yeah, seriously, you should get the book!

fashion: The choker

A choker is a little thing that goes around your neck. It is basically just thread that is sowed into different shapes and patterns. It is a nice accessory to wear in your all day clothes (but I wouldn’t wear it to school!) they look very stylish. Maybe you could try to make your own? The choker in the image above is from Claires Accessories, it’s £4.50!

Friends

Friends can be a bit mean some days but sometimes you just have to get on with it, because as you get older you have to get on with more people, even if you don’t feel like it. If you want some help I recommend reading the book ‘Girl Online’ because it will help you through the journey of life. I am sorry to say this but you will always go through some hills in your life it will never be argument free.

BURY’S CONCERT BAND ROUNDS OFF 2014 IN STYLE The Bury St Edmunds Concert Band rounded off 2014 with another successful fundraising concert on behalf of Sebert Wood School and Christ Church Moreton Hall. The event, which saw the church packed to the rafters raised £700 taking the total amount raised by the band for a variety of local causes and organisations to almost £10,000 over the course of 2014. BSECB Director of Music Rob Head commented: “It was a fine way to end the year and topped off a wonderful twelve months of fundraising concerts around Suffolk by the band. A number of different organisations have benefited including the Theatre Royal in Bury St Edmunds. “The concert at Moreton also featured the Sebert Singers, a choir that was only formed in September. They hit the high notes superbly with their renditions of “What a Wonderful Life” and “Supercalifragilisticexpealidocious”,” added Rob. The Bury St Edmunds Concert Band, which features over 40 musicians of all ages, was founded in 1991 and regularly plays at major music venues across Suffolk and East Anglia.

Volunteering

can lead to a longer, happier life Without its 620 volunteers St Nicholas Hospice Care would not be able to continue supporting people facing long term and life-threatening illnesses, and their families. This month Emma Izod, Hospice HR Advisor, writes about the benefits of volunteering. • Volunteering makes you happy! Research shows people who volunteered felt less socially isolated and good about helping someone else. • Gain valuable skills and experience Volunteering can provide you with valuable skills – such as communication, teamwork, customer services and using your initiative – which you might need to get the job you want. • A longer life Being a volunteer can extend your life expectancy. • Meet new people and make friends Volunteering is a good way to meet people. This can be vital for older volunteers and people who might be isolated or not particularly integrated into society. • Improve self-esteem and confidence Volunteering can be a way of improving confidence to help you to get back into employment. Volunteering can bring back your self-esteem and motivate you, which could have positive effects on other areas of health and life. • Longer survival times for hospice patients Research shows that Hospice patients who receive social visits from a volunteer live a month longer on average than those who do not. More than 20 million people across the UK donate more than 100 million hours to their communities each week. Could you be one of them?

Musker McIntyres reputation grows... Since opening on the heart of the historic Medieval ‘Grid’ in Bury St Edmunds in June 2014, many clients have chosen Musker McIntyre to assist with the sale or let of their properties; in some cases where other more established agents in the town have failed. With almost 40 estate agents in the town to chose from, many residents have opted to use us thanks to our honest, direct approach to marketing; coupled with high quality sales particulars, photography and regular prominent advertising in the local press. Commenting on the first six months, Director Richard Clarke said “I am delighted with the results being achieved by the team in Bury St Edmunds, headed by Sales Manager Jennifer Alderton and ably assisted by Property Consultant Will Robertson who joined the firm in the Autumn. Keeping clients happy and achieving the best possible price is our primary goal, and I am delighted to see both of these qualities being achieved”. Richard has recently completed training to enable him to become a member of the NAEA (National Association of Estate Agents) and both Jennifer and Will are starting to work towards these qualifications in 2015. Testament to the reputation being built in the town is a recent testimonial received from Mr and Mrs Elliott who instructed Musker McIntyre to sell their apartment in the town centre: “Your firm recently handled the sale of our flat in Bury, ably fronted by Jennifer Alderton. Although we only bought it two years ago, our son Ben moving employment rendered the flat redundant. Jennifer handled the purchase for us so professionally then, albeit for another company that it was an easy choice to get her to act for us again. She made it difficult though with a double move, first by marriage hence surname change

74 | FEBRUARY 2015

and then company change. We were most pleased to track her down through one of your paper adverts which included photos of staff and contact details. We weren’t aware of your company, it being a recent addition to Bury, so endorses the advantage of good comprehensive advertising. We again received excellent service from Jennifer and the sale was completed in good time. Her attention to detail and personal service beyond that one might expect, such as taking the trouble to source a suitable removal firm, was most helpful, particularly as we had no local experience to call on. We were also looked after well by others in the office, including yourself one time, on the few occasions that Jennifer was away from the office. It certainly made the exercise much easier with her attention to detail and providing regular updates, enabling us to save journeying up from Kent except when absolutely necessary. You have a nugget there. We cannot thank you and your colleagues, especially Jennifer, enough for your services.” For your free valuation for either sales or lettings, and to benefit from our current market-leading offers and service, please call Jennifer, Will or Richard on 01284 848454 or visit them at 16 Whiting Street in Bury St Edmunds. HOME + LIFESTYLE John Banks Limited is pleased to announce that from Friday 9th January 2015 we officially became the new name in Cambridge for Renault and Dacia for Sales, Service and Parts.

The John Banks Group already has seven other franchised sites as follows: Honda at Cambridge, Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds, Suzuki at Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds, Honda Motorcycles at Bury St Edmunds and Cambridge. With John Banks being 179th in the Top 200 Dealer Groups in the UK with the Renault dealership and a further 25 staff joining the team at John Banks this will of course strengthen the Companies portfolio. John Banks have purchased the site at Swann’s Road from Richard West of “Wests” whose family business has been operating in Cambridge for over 50 years. John Banks, like Wests remain a family run business and will temporarily trade from the sales facility at 217 Newmarket Road for approximately 12 weeks while their new state of the art showroom is built at Swann’s Road joining the sales and aftersales team’s together in their bid to build the Renault and Dacia brand in the Cambridge area as Wests site at Newmarket Road is planned for demolition in the near future. The TUPE transfer with the Renault and Dacia franchise appointments for John Banks will mean that the existing staff remain at the sites so former Renault customers will have the ability to deal with their regular contacts whilst facilities and offers will be improved by the team at John Banks. Customers will bring their vehicles for repair and service to Renault and Dacia at 217 Newmarket Road from 19th January while the site at 13 Swann’s Road is prepared for the development build although the workshop facility will continue to operate and customer vehicles will be shuttled between the two sites until all the staff move in to the brand new site. The telephone numbers all remain the same – Sales 01223 351616 and Service 01223 370 700 although emails have changed but visit www.johnbanks.co.uk/renault or www.johnbanks.co.uk/dacia for contact details. Chief Executive Melanie Banks-Browne has been heading the purchase of the site with Mark Banks, Managing Director of the John Banks Group leading the development of the brand along with their strong team of Directors and

Management Staff who are of course the strong source of knowledge and structure in the John Banks business and have been valued in their ability to structure this development and move forward in to the new brand and specifically the development of the commercial van side which will be an important part of the teams growth in the commercial field in East Anglia. “This has been a difficult time for a take-over as we have had to deal with the Christmas break and have ultimately had some unforeseen delays due to timescales available but we are now pleased that we are “in” on site and have acquired a great team of staff whose knowledge and experience spans hundreds of years between them! We are in the process of putting in new computer and data systems, new training and development and are now recruiting for more staff to join the existing strong team” says Melanie Banks-Browne, Chief Executive. Please visit www.johnbanks.co.uk/recruitment for more information in joining the John Banks Cambridge team. “The existing workshop facilities in Cheddars Lane that John Banks currently operate is a fantastic facility right next to Tesco that offer all makes service, repair and MOT work and with the new site at Swann’s Road having the commercial facility for Vans and Class 7 MOT we have the ability now to deal with all levels of vehicles” says Mark Banks, MD who also confirmed they are pleased that they have a new Aftersales Operations Manager joining the team in February so keep an eye out for more news from John Banks moving forward in 2015. As their music tags state on their radio advertising – John Banks “Drive in to the future” which is exactly what the team at John Banks are doing! Successful re-launch for Friendship Centre A bellydancing masterclass, armchair aerobics and circle dancing were just some of the activities showcased at an event for the over 50’s yesterday. Guests packed out the Apex in celebration of the re-launch of the Bury St Edmunds Friendship Centre at their new town centre meeting place. With members ranging from 58 to over 90 years of age, the Friendship Centre offers informal befriending and social activities for their members as well as advice on legal matters, health and exercise. The Mayor and Apex Commercial Manager Richard Hartley welcomed over 20 local businesses that were exhibiting, including the MHD, Abbeycroft Leisure, Atkins Thomson, Butterworths and Jane Bennett Care Services. Jane Andrews, Manager of the Friendship Centre said: “We’re all about preventing or helping to alleviate loneliness or isolation. It’s friendship that’s the most important thing because of the impact it has on a person’s mental and physical health.” She said loneliness was an issue “everywhere,” adding: “People put on a face. You would be amazed how many people look as though they are having a good day, but really behind the scenes they really need something like this.” She said men were particularly shy of coming to such clubs, but actually the Friendship Centre - which has about 100 members - had a good gender mix.

80 | FEBRUARY 2015

Friendship Centre meetings are held on the third Monday of every month from 10.30am at the Apex with membership costing £10 for the year. Anyone interested in joining can just come along or call Jane Andrews on 01284 763318 or email bsefriendship@gmail.com.

Southgate Church WE ARE YOUR LOCAL CHURCH BASED IN SOUTHGATE COMMUNITY CENTRE, SERVING OUR WHOLE COMMUNITY. COME AND TALK TO US ABOUT MARKING THOSE SPECIAL OCCASIONS SUCH AS MARRIAGE, A WEDDING ANNIVERSARY OR A BIRTH IN THE FAMILY. THIS MONTH WE ARE FOCUSSING ON THE ACTIVITIES WE RUN FOR YOUNG PEOPLE, AND WOULD LIKE TO INTRODUCE ALISON.

Hello, my name is Alison Burgess and I’m the Family and Community Worker here at Southgate Church. I’ve lived around here for 27 years so definitely feel at home! I’ve been working for Southgate Church for just over nine years and I absolutely love my role. There’s so much going on here for children and families and I wanted to use this opportunity to tell you a little bit about what goes on. On Wednesday mornings from 9-11am we host our SPOTS (Southgate Parents of Toddlers) group in the church centre. I say parent and toddler but actually we welcome anyone with a

young child... parents, carers, grandparents, childminders... anyone! It’s a fun morning of chat, activities, toys, crafts and snacks and we finish our session with a storytime and some singing. It’s a really friendly and welcoming group and gives great opportunities for children to learn to play and socialise together and for adults to get to know other people in our community. Everyone is welcome and there’s just a very small £1 charge per family. If you have children who are a little older, we also hold groups for them too. Wednesday Gang meets on...Wednesdays from 3.15-

4.30pm! This group is open to all children aged 6 to 8 years. The children have great fun playing games, making crafts, and sewing; there are also drinks and biscuits too and every week one of our storytellers shares a story from the bible. This is a really popular group which has a small waiting list so do let us know if you would like to sign up. For children that go to middle school, there’s a Youth Club on Thursday evenings just for them. They meet from 7-8.15pm and enjoy theme nights, table tennis, pool, crafts, games, art, challenges and trips out. At 50p an evening it’s a bargain and leaves a bit of pocket money left for the tuck shop, which is always a hit! And if it’s teenagers that you have in your family then Liquid is the group for them. This youth group of 13-18 year olds meet on Monday evenings from 7-9pm and they have great fun together playing pool, table tennis, Wi games and taking part in crafts, challenges and activities. Again, the tuck

shop is always popular! Liquid also spend some time looking at topical teen issues which help young people to explore life and faith. These interactive sessions and great fun and help the young people explore many relevant topics in a safe and non threatening environment.

REGULAR

If it’s something on Sunday your family are looking for then at Southgate we run a Sunday Club for children and young people which takes place alongside the main Sunday morning service from 10.3011.45am. The children have great fun learning and playing together. They experience storytelling, prayer, games, crafts and challenges which will help them learn more about God and how they can build a friendship with Him.

9.45am 10.30am 6.30pm

As I hope you can see, children and families are really important to us at Southgate Church. If you want to know more about any of the groups or activities we offer or you’ d just like to find out more about our church, then do please contact me on 07940 247038 or alison. burgess@southgatechurch.org.uk I look forward to hearing from you.

Special for February: Our fun-packed and lively Hearty Party for children of primary school age on Saturday 14 February from 12 – 2 pm. Your child will enjoy crafts, activities, games and bible teaching before tucking in to a delicious lunch. CINEMA

SELMA

12A

Director Ava DuVernay Starring David Oyelowo, Carmen Ejogo, Tim Roth, Tom Wilkinson, Common, Oprah Winfrey, Cuba Gooding Jr David Oyelowo excels as Martin Luther King in this brilliant account of a key moment in the US civil rights struggle. Spring, 1965. The small town of Selma, Alabama, has become the unlikely flashpoint for the struggle for racial equality. Astute strategist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Martin Luther King Jr (David Oyelowo) knows that the most effective use of non-violence is to provoke a violent response. He selects Selma for a protest march because of its racist governor George Wallace (Tim Roth) and the brutality of its police force. Ava DuVernay’s insightful, profoundly moving drama captures the political chicanery surrounding this turning point for the civil rights movement. It also works superbly on a smaller, human scale as a portrait of a flawed man. At the film’s centre are magnificent performances by a quartet of British actors: David Oyelowo, Tim Roth, Carmen Ejogo as King’s wife Coretta, and Tom Wilkinson as President Johnson.

WHAT’S ON

FIFTY SHADES OF GREY

18

Director Sam Taylor-Johnson Starring Jennifer Ehle, Jamie Dornan, Dakota Johnson, Victor Rasuk, Luke Grimes The risque publishing sensation about a kinky relationship springs to life on the big screen. Virginal student Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) goes to interview wealthy, handsome, charismatic entrepreneur Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan). The attraction between them is immediate and electric. But Ana learns that Christian is only interested in a relationship on his own controlling terms. As they embark on an intense and passionate affair, he introduces her to his dark and very particular tastes. Now she finds herself exploring her own desires for the first time. Having sold more than 90 million copies in e-book and print, E.L. James’s worldwide bestseller is a genuine publishing phenomenon. ‘Nowhere Boy’ director Sam Taylor-Wood helms this eagerly anticipated steamy adaptation. Jamie Dornan from TV’s ‘The Fall’ makes a sleek and manipulative Christian Grey. Fellow rising star Dakota Johnson is perfectly cast as Ana the innocent woman on an extraordinary erotic journey.

EX MACHINA 15 Director Alex Garland Starring Domhnall Gleeson, Alicia Vikander, Oscar Isaac A computer coder is drawn into a mysterious experiment with a beautiful robot girl in this ingenious sci-fi thriller. At 24, Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson) is one of the top coders at Bluebook - the world’s most successful internet company. He thinks his luck is really in when he wins a competition to spend a week at the remote Alaskan mountain retreat owned by the company’s manipulative, reclusive billionaire CEO, Nathan (Oscar Isaac). Nathan reveals that Caleb is to become the human part of brilliant mathematician Alan Turing’s famous test to determine whether a machine can successfully pass itself off as human. The subject of this bizarre experiment is the world’s first genuine artificial intelligence, which is contained within the body of an attractive robot girl named Ava (Alicia Vikander). ‘Sunshine’ and ‘28 Days Later’ writer Alex Garland’s directorial debut is both a gripping sci fi thriller and a fascinating exploration of the nature of consciousness.

COMMUNITY FUNDAY 15 May the Forth Be with You! Our theme this year is Star Wars!! Following the great success of our Community Fun Day on May Day Monday last year we are planning the next one on Monday 4 May 2015 which we hope will be even bigger and better. Last year we had bouncy castles and obstacle courses, stalls, refreshments, live entertainment from two local bands, fancy dress, climbing wall, pony rides, chocolate bingo, face painting

Get Involved!

BINGO – EYES DOWN FOR A FULL HOUSE 13th February and 6th March. There is a monthly Bingo evening at the Community Centre at 7pm on a Friday evening. The next two sessions are on Friday February and Friday March. Come along for a relaxing fun evening – refreshments are served.

RESTART THE HEART – OUR COMMUNITY’S DEFIBRILLATOR APPEAL We told you last month about our life saving appeal. The Southgate Community Partnership has been fundraising for an automatic defibrillator to be installed outside of our Community Centre – also to serve the shops, pub and primary school. We started in May last year with a target of £2500 and we had raised around £800 to date from the proceeds of our Fun Day and two gifts from Southgate Church. Great news – after learning about our appeal, a local medical charity, the St Edmund’s Trust has awarded us a grant to add to our community fundraising so that we can order the defibrillator without further delay. We are planning an opening ceremony and some familiarisation sessions so that local people can use it with confidence should the need arise. The concert with Jonathan Veira, the international singer, has been postponed until later in the year at a date to be arranged– apologies for that. You read this first in the Southgate Directory. We thank the publishers for a great new magazine just for our local area. Everyone we have spoken to thinks it is great!

Southgate Community Centre

There is no charge to become a member of the SCP – so why not join? This will give you the opportunity to attend meetings where the future of the Centre is discussed, help make it an even better place for local people to relax, and to join our group of trustees.

To find out anything about the Centre or any of the activities taking place, contact the Centre Manager – Jackie Tooley – on 01284 703705 or email office@southgatecommunity.org.uk . She is in the office on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays – there is also a 24 hour voicemail available. FEBRUARY 2015 | 91
