EDITOR’S LETTER

WELCOME TO THE

ISSUE

Hello and welcome to the May issue of the Southgate Directory.

Crossword competition winner!

Can you believe our luck this month? We have not one, but two bank holidays! Yipee! Time to get out in the garden and get some colour on these pasty legs! Whilst the sun may be trying to show itself, don’t forget to be prepared. Have a look on page 28 to see some of our top essential summer body items, all of which are worth stocking up on now so you’re right ready when the time comes. Why not enjoy a delicious smoothie (see page 33) whilst relaxing and reading this month’s issue. On page 34 we have a classic recipe, homemade scotch eggs, a perfect accompaniment to BBQ food. BBQ’s are a must on bank holiday, but if you are stuck for that perfect outfit, turn to page 72 where we have stunning outfits you can wear that won’t break the bank, one for the boys and one for the girls. As usual, there’s lots of local news and events too so we hope you enjoy and we look forward to catching up with you in June.

Gemma

Well done to Mrs Simm who answered all the crossword clues correctly in April’s issue of the directory! She has won 2 TICKETS to see Rod Woodward at The Apex on Tuesday 9th June. If you are feeling lucky turn to page 46 and see if you can solve this month’s crossword! (Answers for last month’s crossword are on page 38)

PARKING

ISSUES

A number of parking restrictions across the area will finally be implemented in July/August to make things safer for us all and to help address some of the issues around hospital parking. These include double yellow lines and extra junction protection on the bottom of Home Farm Lane by The Macebearer, which will make it easier for buses to get through and for those of us in cars to see what is coming. It will also include some restrictions in Laundry Lane to improve visibility on the bend as you turn into Abbots Gate, and some extra lines in Barons Road. We have also requested that some white road markings in the area be repainted - specifically on the turning into Barons Road, where the hatched area is no longer visible. This should be completed shortly. On the subject of hospital parking, we were delighted to see that the hospital included the provision of another 400 car parking spaces in its masterplan, which recently went out to public consultation.

Bus Shelter

NEW ROAD SIGNS FOR STEWARD ROAD

Sarah recently presented prizes to the children from Hardwick Primary who won the competition to design safety signs for the end of Steward Road. The two winning signs are in the process of being made into proper road signs and will be installed in the coming weeks. Well done to all the children who entered – we had some fantastic designs and it was a tough competition to judge!

The eagle eyed amongst you may have noticed the new bus shelter base going down in Barons Road. Sarah has funded this new bus shelter through her County Council Highways budget after we were contacted by residents who felt it was needed. The bus shelter should be completed in the next few weeks.

W hat’s been happening at...

HARDWICK Primary School This month Bikelife Suffolk came to our school in April and is a new year long programme of cycling activities designed to ensure that children and families are given the opportunities, skills, support and guidance they need to make cycling part of their everyday lives. Working with Key Stage 2 pupils in 8 schools in Bury-St-Edmunds the aim is to ensure that cycling becomes a normal way of getting to and from school. The overall objective of the project was to increase those cycling to school at least once per week to 15% of KS2 children & parents in all schools. To achieve this we delivered a variety of exciting cycling activities as well as running competitions within and amongst school to enthuse everyone about cycling.

10 | MAY 2015

The programme was launched after Easter and our school hosted a try out show, so children and parents could have the opportunity to ride a variety of bikes and even have a go on our pedal powered juke box! The day was an amazing success and fun for both the kids and parents, even grandparents! We hope the message got across to all of them about how cycling can be part of their lives getting to and from our school.

LOCAL NEWS

Dear reader,

WSH shortlisted for “top hospital” title for fifth time West Suffolk Hospital has been shortlisted for a prestigious national award in recognition of the high quality of care it provides for the fifth consecutive year.

Jason Harries, managing director with CHKS said: “Every hospital is accountable to its patients, their families and carers as well as the local community to provide a safe environment.

The trust is one of five finalists in the quality of care category in the Top Hospital Awards 2015, which are run by independent healthcare intelligence company CHKS. It is the fifth year running that West Suffolk has been shortlisted, with the trust winning the award in 2011 and 2012.

“Our quality of care award highlights those trusts that clearly share a commitment to driving improvement and engendering a culture of excellence throughout their organisations and it is a credit to the staff at West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust that it has been shortlisted for this award.”

The quality of care accolade is given for excellence in high quality care to patients, appropriate to their diagnosis. It is based on a number of criteria, including the length of time patients stay in hospital, waiting times and the rate of emergency readmissions. Mortality rates and whether the patient’s care pathway proceeded as originally planned were also included in the assessment.

The winner will be announced at a ceremony in London on 19 May.

Prof Dr Stephen Dunn, chief executive at the hospital, said: “We are really pleased that West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust has been shortlisted once again for this prized national accolade. “To been named as a finalist for five years in a row is a fantastic achievement and testament to the hard work and commitment of our staff. It also shows that patients using the hospital are receiving safe, high quality and effective care. “However, we are not complacent and will continue to look for ways to improve still further so that our patients have the best possible experience when using our services.”

Latest figures show that stroke patients at West Suffolk Hospital are continuing to benefit from some of the best care in the country. The most recent SSNAP (Sentinel Stroke National Audit Programme) data rates West Suffolk as a level A, making it the best performing of all 16 hospitals in the eastern region and in the country’s top ten. The rating takes into account a range of different criteria which is designed to measure the quality of care which patients receive. This includes how quickly they can access a brain scan, whether they are rapidly transferred to a dedicated stroke unit and how many are given clot-busting thrombolysis treatment. The hospital scored particularly well for the help put in place to aid recovery and rehabilitation, such as access to speech and language therapy, physiotherapy and occupational therapy.

If you have any questions about fundraising, any of the events mentioned above or how you can help the hospital, please contact fundraising@wsh.nhs.uk or call 01284 712952 12 | MAY 2015

from Nowton Neighbourhood Residents Association (NNRA) It looks as though spring is on its way at last and the recently planted area in Caie Walk is starting to look good, as you can see from the photo. The trees are starting to bud and the shrubberies are coming alive. Steward Road has been resurfaced but to date has not been completed and there are areas where the work needs to be rectified. Councillor Sarah Stamp has been chasing this up with the Highways Department to get a date for completion. I was privileged recently to be asked, with Sarah Stamp, to judge a road safety sign competition at Hardwick Primary School where the children had designed street signs to be erected in Steward Road. This week Sarah and I attended the prize giving, the entries were brilliant but as with all competitions not everyone can win. Two children received a runner-up prize of a cycle bag with cycle related gifts and two children received first prizes of book gift cards. The two winning signs will be placed in Steward Road and have been funded by Sarah Stamp. They will remind all drivers using the road to take care as there are children in the vicinity. It’s almost a year now since the NNRA was formed and we are pleased to be working successfully with Havebury,

St Edmundsbury Borough Council and Suffolk County Council, as well as Councillors Sarah Stamp and Patrick Chung. We will be holding our first AGM within the next couple of months and hope you are able to attend. Ann Williamson Chairman Nowton Neighbourhood Residents Association (NNRA) MAY 2015 | 13

feeding the birds BY WOODLANDS WAY

T

here are two reasons why we feed our garden birds, and both are equally legitimate. The first reason is, of, course, to supplement their natural food with the aim of increasing their short-term survival, improving fecundity and achieving an artificially higher population size. The second reason is simply to attract these birds into our gardens so we can enjoy watching them. The blue, yellow, black and white of our three tit species in Moreton Hall, the red front of robins, the glossy black and yellow of blackbirds, and even the delicate browns and greys of dunnocks and wrens all provide delight and fascination as they eat our offerings. If we are lucky, our seed feeder becomes a bird feeder, literally, when Moreton Hall’s sparrowhawk swoops down to grab its meat in the form of an unlucky blue tit or blackbird. However, woodland is a far better habitat for birds than our gardens. Natural food abounds,

with the trees, bushes and ground flora providing relative riches of insects, berries etc all year round. That’s one of the reasons why Woodland Ways doesn’t feed birds in woodland, because there is plenty for the taking. In fact, feeding birds in woodland would be tantamount to admitting that there was something very wrong indeed with the habitat. Furthermore, much of the bird seed placed in woodlands would be eaten by rats, and no-one wants rats to be supported in Moreton Hall. Even worse for birds, though, is that grey squirrels which breed on our woods would benefit from bird seed, and increase their own population size. Grey squirrels do enjoy eating birds eggs and nestlings, so putting bird seed in woods could ultimately lead to increased predation of birds. Putting bird seed in woods, as well as looking unsightly, would have the opposite effect to that intended.

Join us at Woodland Ways... Why not join in with a Woodland Ways work party to help improve the Moreton Hall woods? No experience is needed and all are welcome; we’ll show you what to do. For more information please see www.woodlandways.org.uk, see the Woodland Ways noticeboard in the Community Centre, contact Nick Sibbett on 01284 723847 or email information@woodlandways.org.uk.

Post Marathon Massage

By The Abbeyfields Clinic

T

here is no better time to discover the benefits of massage than after a marathon. For many of us, it’s officially marathon season. This may seem like an indulgence, but whether it is your first, 17th, or 217th marathon, it’s important for you to get a postrace massage. The best time to receive your massage is about two and a half hours after you have finished, but failing that, any time the following week is fine. After strenuous exercise just resting is not enough for recovery. ‘Active Rest’ and gentle stretching is the order of the day. Massage is not a replacement for a proper cool down nor is it intended to replace all of the recovery techniques that you will use after a race. A recovery massage is there to enhance your recovery, get you ready for the next race or workout, and help make your memories of the marathon you have just finished happy ones. We are offering £10 off a 1 hour massage for all marathoners who run for charity (Offer ends 31st May 2015)

Welcome to the 19th hole, a place for golf tips, reviews and everything golf related.

Welcome back to the 19th hole, this month we will be reviewing the Masters competition and seeing what elements we can take from the performances in that high pressure week. The Masters 2015 A magical week and for me the best of the golfing season, it all started Wednesday evening with the unique Par 3 competition a great chance to see the professionals interact with the fans and relax with friends and family. It acts as the perfect curtain raiser to the main event the following morning. Once the main event was underway there was just one name on people’s lips, Jordon Spieth. He was one of the players I named in last month’s article as ones to watch, I described him as a twenty one year old that was one of the most improving and exciting talents in the world game at the moment. His all round game is very solid and he soaks up pressure well making very few errors, this combination will make him a contender around this demanding golf course. Well he proved all of the above points and more that week, breaking many Masters records on his way to collecting the very sort after Masters green jacket and a cheque for 1.8 million dollars. Some great players throughout the history of the game have not managed to win a major championship, at the young age of twenty one years old Jordon Spieth already has his first the questions is now how many will he win in the years to come? Coaches Corner - Hole Putts Like A Champion

The Grip, Left Below Right. This grip allows the shoulders to be a lot more level in the set up position and will allow you to alignment yourself easier with the line you have picked for your putt. Secondly, some of you may find that your right hand takes over your stroke at pressure moments causing missed putts. By switching your hands around your will find that this more often dominate right hand can’t influence the stroke as much and improves the success rate of your putts. Short Putts: We have all missed putts from short distances because we were too keen to see if we had holed the putt and this movement lead to our downfall. To combat this movement Jordon Spieth looks at the hole while holing out on short putts (as the image left shows us). This is strange thing to do in competition but it has helped rid his short putting stroke of unwanted movement at key times Think of it this way, would you watch the ball in your hand if you were trying to throw it to someone? No, you would be looking at the target just like in this drill. Why not try it in practice and maybe even out on the course if it works, this drill allows you to trust your technique and puts the focus on your target. If your putting is not up to major championship standard when why not try out one or both of these tips, they might just help you get your season off to a winning start just like Jordon Spieth.

Watching pressure putt after pressure putt being holed by Jordon Spieth throughout the week, I am sure we all asked yourselves how does he keeping doing that.

I hope this section will help to improve your game, but if you are still struggling with this or any area of your golf game why not contact me for further assistants.

In this month’s coaches corner I am going to highlight two areas of his putting stroke and routine that help him hole those key putts.

La Nel Hair & Beauty Believe it or not but La nel have been opened for just over a year now so we popped along to catch up with the owner Jennifer and her team.

Before introducing us to her team Jennifer explained that their aim at La nel is to provide a ONE STOP salon. First up was Tracy, a traditional hairdresser for men, women and children who introduced us to what she does and explained the current offer they have on Tuesday`s which is over 65`s special offer of a cut and blow dry for only £15 which has been well received by everyone. Yomi the Afro Caribbean hair specialist was busy creating, so we caught up with her and took some photos as she was in full flow with a client, basically

she does what it says on the tin! She can do everything from weaves, corn rows and even extensions. Last but not least we met Georgia who is the beauty therapist, her job is everything else you could want to pamper yourself with including nails, massage, pedicure and waxing, Georgia explained that her current offer for a full set of shellac nails at £15 is a real hit The thing that struck us about La nel apart from the salon`s fresh and clean look was how easy it was to park and it’s free! The girls are always happy and cheerful which I`m sure has had a massive impact on the business. Why not pop along and book a treatment, they even do vouchers to give as a present for a loved one.

Hat’s the way to do it! Have you got a wedding coming up? Going to the races this summer?

Choosing a hat to suit your features is quite an art. Here are some style tips on the latest hat trends... ‘Percher’ hats and half hats worn at a dramatic angle above the right eyebrow were by far the most popular hats at the Royal Wedding, with mother of the bride Carole Middleton wearing a perfect example.

Wedding Hats and Hairstyles

Wide brimmed hats should be worn in bold colours that contrast with the wedding outfit, rather than matching.

Use stronger products than normal to make your style last.

A black shift dress with a lime green big wedding hat is eye catching and sophisticated. Cerise pink and purple wedding hats are very popular colours – why not pick an outfit in one shade and a hat in the other? Hats can either match a colour or provide a spectacular contrasting statement. It’s the finished look that’s important. Always try your hat on with the outfit you’re wearing. Consider the hat in the context of your whole ‘look’ – and wear the same height shoes you’re planning to wear. Hiring is a good option to consider for designer style on a budget. 30 | MAY 2015

Concentrate on volume and body. Hats flatten hair, so give your style plenty of bounce by blow-drying, curling and using hairspray.

Style shorter hair by bringing hair forwards so it comes below the hat at the front and sides. Unless you add a bit of drama to your hair, your hat can look as if it has just been placed with little thought. A well styled hair-do brings your hat to life and looks great when you eventually take your hat off. Hats and Face Shape Round faces can get away with big-brimmed hats Choose a ‘hatinator’ if you have a small face or petite frame (it’s a half hat with more structure than a fascinator). Or a small ‘percher’ that’s worn at an angle so your face can be seen clearly.

RECIPE

FOOD & DRINK

Falafel Scotch eggs Ingredients: 9 large eggs 1 tbsp olive oil, plus extra for rolling 2 large onions, chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 tbsp ground cumin 1 tbsp ground coriander 400g can chickpeas, drained ½ small pack coriander, leaves only 200g wholemeal breadcrumbs 5 tbsp plain flour, plus extra for dusting 25g panko or dried breadcrumbs 3 tbsp sesame seeds sunflower or vegetable oil, for frying

Method: Put 8 of the eggs in a pan of cold water. Bring to the boil, cook for 5 mins, then quickly lift out of the pan and plunge in a big bowl of cold water to cool. Once cool enough to handle, peel. While the eggs cool, put the oil, onions and garlic in a frying pan. Fry very gently until really soft and just starting to turn golden. Add the spices and fry for a few mins more. Tip into a food processor and whizz to a paste, then add the chickpeas and coriander leaves, and pulse until finely chopped but not pasty. Stir in the wholemeal breadcrumbs, flour and final egg, beaten first with a fork, with a good amount of seasoning. Divide the mixture into 8. Take a portion at a time and flatten between your hands (rub your hands with a little more oil if it’s sticking to your fingers too much). Roll 1 of your peeled eggs in a little flour, shake to remove the excess, then wrap the falafel mixture around it, moulding it to completely cover the egg and squishing it together at the joins to seal. Repeat to cover all the eggs. Tip the panko or dried breadcrumbs onto a plate and mix in the sesame seeds. Roll each egg in it to coat. Can be made 1 day ahead, loosely covered with cling film and chilled.

34 | MAY 2015

Get a large, deep saucepan and half-fill it with oil, or use a deepfat fryer. Heat until a bit of bread browns in about 30 secs. Add a couple of eggs at a time and fry, turning, until really golden and crisp, about 2 mins. Lift onto kitchen paper to drain while you cook the rest of the eggs in batches. Season with a little more salt and eat warm or cold.

Rose of Bengal With the recent reopening and change of management of the Rose of Bengal we thought we would pop along and see what all the fuss was about… Was it going to be just another Indian cuisine restaurant in Bury St Edmunds? We were greeted by Mukul and his friendly team who showed us to our table and asked if we would like a drink while we looked over their new and improved menu.

I must say I thought we knew a lot about curries but Mukul was on hand to give us his advice about some of the dishes that we didn’t recognise; the freshly decorated interior was sharp, clean and extremely pleasing to

the eye, so far so good.

interested in feedback, they have a comments book and also encourage Trip Advisor reviews.

After a lot of debating over hotness (which by the way you can increase or decrease according to your taste or braveness!) we all finally agreed on our dishes and let me say what a variety they have to choose from, apart from the traditional Indian dishes they have curries from around the world which includes the Caribbean curry. I had the Roshoni chilli chicken. Never tried it? Neither had I, but wow, what a dish, which was complimented with garlic rice.

Overall, a very pleasant night out with the family. Even with most of the tables being occupied in the restaurant and what appeared to be a young man, very busy with deliveries, we all felt that we received great food, great service and it didn’t break the bank either especially as we used our BSE Directories voucher! Highly recommended, we will certainly return, and hopefully we won’t leave it too long.

Our food arrived with no fuss, it was extremely well presented and hot, much to my wife’s delight as this is one of her pet hates, the service we got was fantastic and the waiters were very attentive and worthy of their tip, the team here are very

A brief business meeting and then we had Liz O’Riordan, a breast surgeon speak to us…. but not about surgery!! Liz is a Triathlete – cycling, running and swimming and is very successful. She told us of her struggle to become an “athlete” being no sportsperson particularly at school or while studying. Her sports career took her from running the London marathon for charity with scant preparation as she had no time to train or go to the gym to “getting on her bike” so that she would see more of her husband! She found this mainly male dominated but worked up to 40 and 100 miles. Previously preferring swimming but gasping for breath, she persevered, progressing to open water swimming and winning medals for completing various distances. We were shown the padded shorts, understood the value of cream rubbed into nether regions, the skin tight wet suit, the dreaded clips for her cycling shoes and the spills these caused in the early days, learning to eat and drink while cycling and the lightweight bike. Liz shared her thrills and spills, her trials and tribulations bur proved that really anyone can do it! An inspiring speaker!

COMMUNITY CENTRE’S FUNDRAISING FOR DEFIBRILLATOR SUCCESS

A new life-saving defibrillator was unveiled early in April after a

year’s successful fundraising in the Southgate area of Bury St Edmunds. The new life saving equipment which is sited outside Southgate Community Centre was handed over in a short ceremony last week. Fundraising for the £2500 needed commenced just under a year ago at the inaugural community funday on May Bank Holiday Monday and has continued throughout the year culminating in a generous grant from the St Edmunds Trust in recognition of the effort by the local community. Our picture shows the presentation being made by Mary Pennock and Dr Paul Siklos of the St Edmunds Trust, with Jonathan Needle of East of England Ambulance Service to Tim Sheppard and Stuart Williams of Southgate Community Partnership. Also present are Cllr Sarah Stamp and Paul Hicklin who gave much needed advice to the project.

HeartStart Home Defibrillator QUICK REFERENCE

Using the Defibrillator Check for signs of Sudden Cardiac Arrest: 9 Unresponsive 9 Not Breathing Normally

Public access defibrillators (PADs) are found in public spaces like your local shopping centre, gym, train station or village hall. We are very happy to now have one here at the Southgate Community Centre. The briefcase-sized box on the wall contains a PAD. It’s there for anyone to use on someone in cardiac arrest. They are simple and safe. The machine gives clear spoken instructions. You don’t need training to use one. Once in position, the defibrillator detects the heart’s rhythm. It won’t deliver a shock unless one is needed. After a cardiac arrest, every minute without CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and defibrillation reduces someone’s chance of survival by 10 per cent. When you call 999, the operator can tell that we have a defibrillator at the centre. Don’t delay or interrupt chest compressions to get it, send someone else.

Defibrillators are very easy to use. Although they don’t all look the same, they all function in broadly the same way. If you come across someone who is not breathing or breathing erratically, the most important thing is to call 999 and start CPR. If you’re on your own, don’t interrupt the CPR to go and get the defibrillator. When you can, send someone else to collect it. Once the defibrillator is open, all you have to do is follow the spoken instructions. Defibrillation is one crucial stage in a sequence of events that need to occur for the resuscitation of a victim of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). This sequence, or ‘chain of survival’, starts by summoning the emergency services as soon as possible. The second stage is providing basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation (chest compressions alternated with rescue breaths) to keep the victim alive until the third stage (defibrillation) can be performed.

The automated external defibrillator (AED) has been described as the single most important development in the treatment of SCA. These devices are increasingly used by people, often with little or no training, to re-start the heart of a victim of SCA. Under ideal circumstances, when used very soon after collapse (within two or three minutes), many can survive. The crucial determinant of survival is the interval between collapse and the use of the AED to deliver a shock. The strategy, therefore, is to have an AED installed at a place where it might be needed so that it can be accessed quickly by someone nearby, taken to the person who has collapsed, and used before the arrival of professional help. This arrangement is known as Public Access Defibrillation (PAD). Our Defribillator is installed outside at the front of the community centre for easy access when needed in an emergency.

Tentative Campers BY ANDREW SOUTHWOOD

I

’ve never really been that sure about camping. On one hand I love the outside - being at one with nature. On the other, I like some home comforts, like toilets and warmth. With this in mind, camping in the garden is an acceptable compromise. ‘Tenting’, as my daughter calls it, is clearly wildly exciting when you are about 5 years old. Whilst my son helpfully timed me putting the tent up, his sister distributed pegs randomly in the area generally around/ under/in the half erected tent. This, together with the degraded elastic in the poles, meant that when I was informed by the proficient stopwatch operative that it took me exactly 22 minutes and 48 seconds to complete the job, I was fairly pleased with myself. What followed for the next half hour basically involved the kids dragging

54 | MAY 2015

the contents of their bedroom into the tent. There were some negotiations, specifically around the number of cuddly toys and books allowed, bearing in mind the 3 of us would also have to fit in, but other than that it was a surprisingly swift set up. Constant questioning about how long it was until bedtime (at only 3pm…) ensued, but we eventually got past that. When bedtime did arrive I tucked them up, read to them and told them I’ll be back in a little while. It’s still light of course, but they seem settled. At about 8pm I join them. My son is sat up still reading but we all manage to get to sleep as the light fades a short while later. As predicted, it’s my bladder that gives out first in the early hours. Not literally, that would be messy, but I am forced to water the borders under the cover

of darkness. There is the familiar buzz of tent zips opening and closing at night. It’s such a distinctive sound, bringing back memories of disturbed sleep and ice cold toes, dashing across dew soaked grass. Oddly, it’s 20 minutes past the usual 7am start, when they kids finally wake up. I had visions of a pre-6am launch to the day, without the usual blackout blinds, and the excitement of breakfast. In previous years I have made porridge or pancakes on the camping stove in the garden. However, we made a rapid unanimous group decision that it was far to cold for that this time, and we scurried inside to huddle by the radiator, looking into the cold garden. Even the kids have their limits, and 5 degrees was clearly well below that. Thankfully, I think we are probably on the same wavelength when it comes to ‘tenting’ after all.

Outdoor Fun for the family! With not one, but two bank holidays this month, you may be struggling to keep the kids amused, here are a few ideas for a family day out that won’t break the bank... ABBEY GARDENS

This is by far, the cheapest, as it’s completely free and town central, the Abbey Gardens is perfect for everyone. Take a picnic down there and relax, there is plenty of free space for the little ones to run off some energy whilst you relax, take a walk around the superb ruins, the kids playground is safe, you could even hire out a tennis court if you have older ones and enjoy a game of tennis. Feed the ducks or have a kick around on the large open grass area, a lovely way to spend the day.

WEST STOW

Featuring living history and event days, workshops, walks and talks, these sites and their events bring history to life. There is a playground, coffee shop and this is a definite must with the family on a warm and sunny day!

KNETTISHALL HEATH

This is an excellent spot for families, take a paddle on a hot day in the river, try out some of the walks they have on offer or simply take a picnic for a nice afternoon!

GO APE (THETFORD FOREST)

If you have a head for heights, this is great fun for all ages, not a free day out, but if you can afford to splash out a little, this really is a treat. Afterwards stay and have a picnic, bring a football or cricket set, or take your bikes (or hire some of theirs out) if you are feeling really energetic, as their cycle routes are well planned out and perfect for all ages.

BRESSINGHAM STEAM

Not just steam engines, but beautiful gardens to explore, all kids should experience this place, as the ride on Thomas the Tank Engine is a must for all little Thomas fans out there! Again, not the cheapest but with it being fairly local, you can spend the day there without the travel cost and time imposing on the day.

BANHAM ZOO

Take a short drive to Banham Zoo to see all the animals. All the family will enjoy watching the animals and their antics. They have food halls or you can pack a picnic for lunchtime and enjoy a well earned rest in between your visit.

The Values of a Good Education

Simon Head

I’ve always been secretly proud that British stamps don’t have ‘Britain’ written on them. Whilst this is essentially a throw-back to our using them before other countries did, I’ll admit to telling myself that it is simply unnecessary: the Queen’s silhouette embodies all you need to know. British schools are now asked to embed British values. Can we put a name to such ideals, or are they already sufficiently supplied (in an understatedly British way)? The guidance on this regulation articulates democracy, individual liberty and respect for different beliefs as being guiding tenets of ‘British values.’ And rightly so. However, I don’t remember those bits from the Olympic opening ceremony quite as well as the Queen and James Bond parachuting into the stadium. It seems a bit unfair if schools get lumbered with fostering only the worthiest standards of the kingdom, when a plethora of more exciting ones are jostling for inclusion too. My ultimate school 1st XV of Great Brits would find positions for Wilberforce, Nightingale and Disraeli on the coaching team, but on the pitch it would be an all-action pack of Ernest Shackleton scrumming down between G.K. Chesterton and Churchill. Brunel and McBride would man the engine room with Little John, Boudicca and Bond sallying forth from the back row. Nelson and Newton are the halfbacks with Richard Burton and King Arthur providing derring do in the centres. Owain Glyndwr, Jessica Ennis and Billy Whizz supply the dash. The wonderful point of this fantasy is that someone else’s team, under the same banner, would look completely different (you can’t leave Jonny out). Just as importantly, a barbarians side including Einstein, Joan of Arc, Don Quixote and Plato would give them a great game. The principles that schools should help children acquire are the ones with universal value. Simon Head is Headmaster of Moreton Hall Preparatory School. headmaster@moretonhallprep.org

garden confidential BY PAUL CLARKE

PAULS PLANT OF THE MONTH

Acanthus spinosus What to do in your garden in May

Commonly known as the Bear’s Breeches. Acanthus literally means thorn but don’t let this put you off as the plant is tall and statuesque and has distinctive hooded bracts, which vary from white, to pink or purple. Reaching a height of around 4-5 foot it is also highly attractive to bees. Plant in spring with a protective mulch after which they need little attention. You can propagate by taking cuttings in late autumn and early winter. Sections of root laid on a seed tray of compost will sprout within weeks.

This months poem... 62 | MAY 2015

When it comes to gardening you never stop learning. I am always willing to listen and learn and to pinch ideas from other peoples gardens. With this in mind I am hoping to visit more gardens this year as we have so many on Suffolk. To name just three on our doorstep there is the Lucy Redman Garden in Rushbrooke, the Langham Hall Walled Garden and the Fullers Mill Garden at West Stow. These gardens are all packed with ideas and you cannot fail to come away without being inspired. “’Tis like the birthday of the world, When earth was born in bloom; The light is made of many dyes, The air is all perfume: There’s crimson buds, and white and blue, The very rainbow showers Have turned to blossoms where they fell, And sown the earth with flowers.” THOMAS HOOD

pauls jobs for the month General Maintenance • Check for nesting birds before clipping hedges • Regularly hoe off weeds • Keep birdbaths topped up with water. • Recycle junk mail. If you have one of those shredding machines then shred your envelopes and paper and add to your compost heap.

Lawn Maintenance • Lawns will need cutting ideally every two weeks • Edge the lawn to create a ‘gutter’ around the lawn edge (this stops the lawn from growing into the border). • If you have a problem with moss and weeds apply a combined moss and weed killer or continue to rake.

Flower Garden • Market stalls have plenty of Clematis for sale and if you’re tempted then it is a good time to plant them in your garden

Pauls

• Plant out summer bedding this month , it is still possible to get frosts so depending on the weather you need to decide when you do this.

• This is a good time to tidy up your cordylines. The lower leaves often look a bit brown after winter and these can be tugged away.

• Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of daffodils and other spring-flowering bulbs

• Prune Flowering Quince when the bloom fades

• You can sow sweet williams, wall flowers, fox gloves, honesty and canterbury bells

Vegetable Garden

• Remove faded flowers from camellias • You can now plant out your stored dahlia tubers. If you lifted them last Autumn and stored the dahlias check the condition and discard any that have gone soft. Plant them at least 4-5 (10cm) inches deep. At the same time put in some supporting canes for the taller varieties. • If you have space in a pot, sow a few sweet peas. An old variety with a strong scent is Painted Lady • A thick layer of coffee grounds can act as a deterrent against slugs and snails around your hostas

GARDEN SERVICES

• May is the month to plant out your salad crops. Use put of your back garden as a mini allotment and sow beetroot, runner beans, brussel sprouts, cauliflowers broccoli, fennel, kale peas, beans, swedes, radish, carrots and lettuce. • If you haven’t done so already prepare a trench for some runner beans. Dig a trench a spade wide and around 2 spades depth. Add into this any vegetable and grass cuttings before covering with soil. Erect your cane supports before planting your runner beans.

One-off jobs or regular maintenance on a weekly or monthly basis hedge trimming | grass cutting | general weeding & tidying up

d Sue, Brendan an

me

If any of our readers are fans of the channel 4 programme Coach Trip, and watched the last series aired in March, you may have recognised a couple of Moreton Hall Residents make their appearance on the coach, towards the end.... by Sally Walters

...One being me, Sally Walters, and the other was my good friend Sue Smith, a hypnotherapist. We both live on the Moreton Hall Estate and have been friends for around 10 years, meeting in the school playground at Sebert Wood where both our youngest children attended together. You may have seen Sue on your screens previously making appearances on the popular Come Dine with Me, Weakest Link and other quiz shows to name but a few, but this was my first time ever on the big screen (well if you own a 50inch tv!). When Sue asked me to be her partner in crime, I thought why not, it’s a free holiday after all! So we emailed the producer for an application form. Next thing we know, we are in London for an audition with other eager pairs, trying to impress for a place on the trip. There were a few normal people there, and some extravagant ones, so not thinking we stood a chance, we went home after a lovely day out, then a couple of weeks later we got the call saying they wanted us on the trip! With holidays and work getting in the way we had to be put down as standby contestants!!! The ones that get on after someone is voted off the trip. Scary!!!! If you are not familiar with Coach Trip, then

64 | MAY 2015

let me brief you on the format. Coach Trip is a reality gameshow where Brendan Sheeran (Tour Guide), takes 7 couples (you can be related, friends, spouses, partners) around Europe on a coach over 4 weeks, visiting various places along the way and enduring 2 activities per day, you never know where you are going or what you will be doing until Brendan announces it on the coach. But to stay on the trip, you have to try and get along with everyone, otherwise at the end of the day, you have a vote off, where each pair has to choose a couple they dislike more than the others, and give reasons to them face to face, the couple that receives the most votes from the other couples, gets handed a yellow card by Brendan, and if you already have a yellow card, this will become a red card, and you are booted off the trip, there and then! Sounds fun hey? Well let me tell you, it was a blast, we filmed the last 4 days of the trip, so got to the final without the red card which was lovely, here is a little insight of what we both got up to on our adventure.... Early September 2014 After getting the call to say we will most definitely be getting on the coach at some point when they start filming in October for the 4 weeks, we were told to have our bags packed and ready to go, because

they may call at anytime, and that means we would have to be leaving at the drop of a hat. Aaarggh!! Every day we waited for the phone call, every time the phone rang we missed a heart beat, this went on for 3 weeks, until finally, whilst I was watching x-factor on the Saturday night, there was a knock at my door, and there was Sue with a glass of wine in hand (she lives round the corner from me!). Once in the door, she announced ‘We’re On!!!’. We screamed with excitement (well mine was more freaking out!) Really?? Now this seemed so real, I only went to the audition for a laugh, now I was going to be on national telly doing goodness knows what in a foreign country. Sue went on to say, the producer told her the other contestants already out there filming were currently in a hard to reach place, so flights may be a problem but they were hoping to get us out there the following day! It took hours and by around midnight Sue received the flight details, we were going to be picked up at 7am in the morning (yes 7am!!) by a driver who would take us to Heathrow Airport and then we would board a flight to Athens, Greece!! How excited we were at that point, I cannot tell you! But after arriving in Athens we would have to get another internal flight to Ioannina, then a taxi would be waiting for us to take us both to the unnamed hotel where the others were all staying for that night only.

not allowed to meet them until we actually boarded the coach. We slept ok that night and got up early as requested, tried to cover our heavy dark shadows under the eyes for the cameras, and after waiting what seemed like an age, we were taken to the rooftop of the hotel and interview on camera, very daunting for me as I don’t do this very often, even for the family video’s, I’m the one usually hiding behind the sofa – I hate watching myself back on the telly! At this point I thought, what am I doing, why am I here? But after about the 4th interview I felt more relaxed (you are interviewed as a couple around 3 times a day, away from the other contestants, to talk about your day, the activities and the other contestants! You are filmed from the moment you sit on the coach, and throughout the activities, so pretty much all day, I had to get used to it! We both had an amazing experience together and with the wonderful contestants we met in Greece, we recently had a reunion with them all in Birmingham, so there were no fall outs! Turn over to page 66 to see what we got up to on our 4 days in Greece with the other coach trippers...

We flew all day and finally arrived at 10pm at our hotel, we had no idea where we were at this point, but were told to check in and go straight to our rooms where we would be met later on by one of the production crew to brief us on our day ahead. Yikes! We waited about an hour and there was a knock at our room, a young lady called Rose greeted us, and told us we would be met in the morning for our early interview as a couple, so be ready! We hadn’t met anyone else at this point, and were very tired, we couldn’t leave our room as the other contestants were around, and we were

Day 3 (episode 19) Loutraki, Greece

A Greek Lesson

Beach Yoga

The Mud Spa

Thermal Spa

Here we had a Greek lesson and went off to the shops in two groups with a list of items to order in the Greek we were taught in the classroom, it was our very first activity and we had fun with the others, getting to know them, Sue and I felt very welcomed by all of them.

This was the worst activity, it was freezing cold, and they asked us to get into this smelly lake and cover ourselves in the mud found at the bottom! Supposed to be very good for your skin, well it didn’t feel it at the time! Thanks for that one!

Due to the weather being awful, this ended up being Cafe Yoga instead, the locals enjoyed watching us bend and stretch in places we wouldn’t normally do, and Sue even managed to get given an 80 year old man’s phone number!

When Brendan announced we were going to another Spa, we had visions of the last mud one we were made to endure, but luckily this turned out to be be a luxury thermal spa (weather bad again, but we heard later this was meant to be a Bungee Jump off a bridge!!!) Thank you weather for being so bad!!!

Day 4 (episode 20) Athens, Greece Day 2 (episode 18) Patras, Greece Grappling

This is a form of Greek wrestling, I’m not very physically fit as most people would know, and it looked quite dangerous too, but luckily the grappling experts thought we were all so bad at it that we didn’t get to do a demonstration!

Drumming

We went to a Greek teacher’s home and played around with his drums, it was different, I might have a hidden talent! Watch this space!

Sea Turtle Sanctuary

This was lovely to experience, we visited a sea turtle sanctuary, where they kept injured turtles and got them rehabilitated ready to release back into the water when they are well enough. We bathed them and fed them, our last activity of the trip!

The Vineyard

I couldn’t contain my excitement when Brendan announced we were off for an afternoon of drinking wine, although we wasted valuable time with the coach getting stuck, but once there, we all had a ball and sampled some very old red wine!

We then did the final vote, this time voting for the couple we wanted to win! We won’t tell you who we voted for though, but you can watch us on 4oD, if you missed it! Series 13. Our last night, and the production crew put us up in a top hotel in the centre of Athens, we spent our next day sight seeing without the cameras though! We made friends for life on this trip and don’t regret doing it for a minute!

WIN BIG at Awards Ceremony Bury St Edmunds based Home Improvement company, Frames Conservatories Direct, have three reasons to celebrate this week. Not only were they voted the Best Regional Installer at the Network Veka Trade Awards, but they then went on to win Best National Installer and one of their fitting teams, Mark & Ronnie, were voted National Fitters of the Year. Respected trade organisation Network Veka surveys the 15,000 nationwide customers of its 140 member companies to gauge their level of satisfaction with the service provided. Every customer installation carried out by a Network Veka member company is surveyed once the job is completed. The survey ensures that the highest levels of service are given from the start to the finish of a job. The questions cover the conduct of the sales team, the politeness and efficiency of the fitters, the professionalism of the company and the cleanliness of the customer’s home when the work is completed. Finally the customer is asked if they

The team with their National Winner award

would recommend the company to others based on their experience. In addition to the Customer Satisfaction Surveys, to qualify for the Fitters Award, Mark & Ronnie were visited and observed on site during an installation, completed practical and written challenges and had to take part in a live interview in front of 200 delegates. John Ogilvie, Managing Director of Network Veka commented “Frames Conservatories Direct consistently score 99% and over in their Customer

Satisfaction Surveys so it was really no surprise that they swept the board this year. It’s a tremendous achievement and the first time that a company has won all three awards.” The winners received their trophies from snooker legend Steve Davies at the Awards Ceremony in Stratford Upon Avon on Saturday 21 March. Adrian Lewis was delighted with the result “I am extremely proud of every member of my team for the part they played in helping us achieve this award but I am especially proud of the fitters and Mark & Ronnie in particular as they are the ones who the customer sees most. The fact that the awards are based entirely on customer satisfaction is what makes them so special – if we aren’t delivering customer satisfaction then we aren’t doing our job properly.” These awards comes less than a year after the company picked up the Network Veka Best Newcomer Award last year having achieved the highest customer satisfaction rating of all new members.

Hi!

Sup dudes and dudet’s, hope you all had a good Easter and if you have spare chocolate from your eggs then you will enjoy reading one of this month’s articles!

molly xx

flip flops and chocolate covered flapjacks sunglasses Method

We have had some really nice weather recently so now is the time to go on a search for new summer gear! When choosing my footwear I like to think about the colours on them making sure they will co-ordinate with my summer clothes. It’s great to have funky looking sunglasses but make sure you check their UV protection rating – they need to protect your eyes from the sun too!

1. Preheat oven to 180 C / Gas 4. Grease a tin and sprinkle with a little bit of sugar. 2. Melt the butter, the sugar and the golden syrup in a small pan over a low heat.

Ingredients

Serves: 12 • 110g butter • 40g sugar • 2 tablespoons golden syrup • 175g porridge oats • 100g chocolate (I like Galaxy®)

3. Take off the heat and add the porridge oats. Mix well till the oats are coated. Pour mixture into the prepared tin and smooth with the back of a spoon. 4. Place flapjacks in the oven for 10 to 20 minutes, until golden brown on top. Remove from oven and let cool for 3 to 5 minutes. 5. Melt chocolate in the microwave using short 20 second intervals on high power. Stir in between till melted and smooth. Dunk the cut and cooled flapjacks into the chocolate or drizzle over the top!

bows are everywhere

Every clothes and accessories shop I go into are all selling bows at the moment! If you are a girly girl and enjoy hair accessories then you’ll like this. There are all kinds of different colours, sizes and shapes for bows. There are headbands, clips, bobbles and twisty ones. You can also get bun accessories that look like a clip type thing but really it is a piece of fabric with wire inside. The wire makes it moveable and not all floppy, then you just tie it round your bun and you have a cute accessory! MAY 2015 | 75

BURY DARTS LEAGUE CHAIRMAN HONOURED BY HIGH SHERIFF OF SUFFOLK Colin Green, Chairman of the Suffolk

Summer Sixes Darts League has been honoured by the High Sheriff of Suffolk, Mr Wingfield Digby Esq in recognition and appreciation of the contribution he has made to the community. Among his many charitable activities, Colin has dedicated the past 13 years to heading up the Suffolk Summer Sixes Darts League, a 30-team league which has to date raised more than £50,000 for CLIC Sargent, the children and young person’s cancer charity. To Moreton Hall Community Club’s longest standing member, it came as a shock to receive the High Sheriff’s certificate in the post last week. Colin said: “It feels great to be appreciated but is a real surprise to me; I’ve never done anything for recognition, I just think it’s only right to give what I can to worthy causes.” Over the years, Colin has contributed to a great deal of worthy causes in the local and wider community; from being a long-

term sponsor of Bury Town Football Club and the RSPB to the Lighthouse Club, a construction industry charity. One of Colin’s great passions is vintage trains and his long term support of the National Railway Museum in York has this year culminated in the restoration and display of train that took Sir Winston Churchill’s on his solemn last journey, to mark the 50th anniversary of the statesman’s funeral. In the letter received by Colin, Mr Wingfield Digby stated: “We were very impressed with the contribution you make to the local community. You help make Suffolk a wonderful place in which to live and work.” Daisy Turner, CLIC Sargent Fundraising Manager said: “We are so grateful for Colin’s continual commitment to improving the lives of children and young people with cancer, and for all the boundless energy and enthusiasm he puts into the Suffolk Summer Sixes darts league.” MAY 2015 | 79

HEDGEHOG AWARENESS WEEK 3rd-9th MAY 2015 All is not well with the hedgehog population in our country. After 15 million years of evolution, hedgehogs have changed very little. However, our society has. The numbers of hedgehogs in our countryside is dropping rapidly, due to a number of factors. In the 1950’s, there were an estimated 36 million hedgehogs in Britain: now sadly it is estimated to be just 1.5 million. They are declining at about the same rate as tigers. Intensive agriculture, the increasing use of pesticides both on farms and in our gardens, more predators, and more and more buildings have all contributed to the decline of our spiky friends. May 3rd – 9th is Hedgehog Awareness week, which is now an annual event on the calendar. We can do little to halt the erosion of the hedgehog’s natural habitat caused by farming, or new-builds. However there are things we can all do in our own gardens, which will help. Here are some steps everyone can take, whether you have a large or a small garden or patio area. 1. If you have a fence around your garden/patio, make a 5” hole through which the hedgehogs in neighbouring gardens can squeeze. This will ensure that hedgehogs can meet (to breed!), and that they have access to a large territory to forage for food and shelter. Hedgehogs can travel up to 2km a night, and if your garden is sealed in like Fort Knox they can not visit you. 2. Put out clean water at night; hedgehogs struggle to find water sources which are safe, and will die from dehydration very quickly. 3. Leave a saucer of cat food or dry cat/dog biscuits on your patio, but avoid putting out milk or fish products as these are harmful for them. 4. Avoid using slug pellets/pesticides; hedgehogs are the natural solution to a slug problem. Encourage them to visit your garden, and you will have no need to buy these harmful products. 5. If you see a live hedgehog in daylight hours, get it to a vet quickly, as this indicates the animal is very sick and requires urgent treatment. 6. Join the British Hedgehog preservation Society www.britishhedgehogs.org.uk and get involved in their project called Hedgehog Street www.hedgehogstreet.org/, in which you can report sightings in your own garden. This helps to monitor the decline/increase of the local population, which can be vitally important to ensuring their survival. Elizabeth Hodder

Recently it was the 45th anniversary of the Apollo 13 landing back on earth after problems occurred with its voyage to the Moon. Two days into the mission, disaster struck 200,000 miles from Earth when oxygen tank No. 2 blew up in the spacecraft. Swigert reported to mission control on Earth, “Houston, we’ve have a problem,” and it was discovered that the normal supply of oxygen, electricity, light, and water had been disrupted. Coming up with some emergency procedures, the crippled spacecraft 82 | MAY 2015

continued to the moon, circled it, and began a long, cold journey back to Earth. The astronauts were alone, yet they had contact with people who could offer advice and guided them home safely. This makes me think of another amazing feat of communications. God really does want us to talk to him about our day to day lives. Those things that worry us and keep us awake at night: the family member who is in trouble, the bill that needs paying, or that pain that worries you - yet you avoid going

to see the doctor. He wants to relate to us as any good and loving Father would. There may be times when we feel miles away from anyone, all alone, no one to turn to, abandoned and helpless. It seems you are all alone in a sea of darkness, but unlike the Apollo 13 astronauts, you only have to express your thoughts silently or out loud and God will hear. I know I have tried it many, many times. The Bible calls it prayer - no special training, no new language, no exams to pass, tell it like it is, and when necessary just

say “God, we’ve got a problem here”, and trust him, in his timing to begin to bring some answers. There are loads of people at Southgate Church who could help you to try this out, you never know you might live near one of them, or you could always pop in for a chat. You’d be very welcome!

Starring Kate Winslet, Matthias Schoenaerts, Alan Rickman, Stanley Tucci, Helen McCrory French landscape gardening history is reinvented in Alan Rickman’s period romance, played out in Louis XIV’s Palace of Versailles. Set in 1682, A Little Chaos re-imagines the creation of the Rockwork Grove, a unique element of the gardens at the Palace of Versailles, where King Louis XIV’s celebrated Landscape Designer Andre le Notre (Matthias Schoenaerts) is tasked with overseeing the creation of an outdoor ballroom as part of the Sun King’s grand expansion plans. Le Nôtre turns to talented outsider Sabine De Barra (Kate Winslet) to bring a fresh perspective to the project and is initially unsettled by her freethinking style, but slowly starts to appreciate the value of “a little chaos” in her methods. Directed by Alan Rickman and starring the veteran actor as King Louis XIV, A Little Chaos is his second outing behind the camera, following his 1997 drama The Winter Guest.

Now in their senior year, the Barden Bellas are back to compete in an international a cappella competition that no American group has ever won before. Following an unfortunate wardrobe malfunction that sees Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson) expose herself at an event to celebrate the US President’s birthday, the Barden Bellas attempt to restore their tarnished reputation by entering the World Championships, which sees them competing against European champions Das Sound Machine from Germany. Directed by Elizabeth Banks, co-star and producer of Pitch Perfect, Pitch Perfect 2 follows Beca (Anna Kendrick) and the gang through their final year and sees many of the original cast reprising their roles, including Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Anna Camp, Brittany Snow, Hana Mae Lee and Alexis Knapp. Along with more catchy performances from the Bellas, it will also feature cameo performances from real-life a capella groups Penn Masala and Pentatonix and the Filharmonic.

WHAT’S ON

Sights ‘n’ Sounds Disco It was back in 1976 when it all began – We (Mike Hobson and Trevor Whitehouse) bought some disco equipment and faced the crowds at our first public gig at the newly opened Southgate Community Centre. It was a great time for music, in 1977 the movie Saturday Night Fever was released which brought discos and disco music to the public in a big way. Sights ‘n’ Sounds held regular public discos in and around Bury, drawing over 800 people to the Corn Exchange and filling halls and community centres around East Anglia. As the years passed the disco grew in size and diversified. As the public work was pushed out by night clubs opening, Sights ‘n’ Sounds moved towards private functions such as weddings, family occasions and corporate events.

SOUL SCENE Launching in Stowmarket in January 2014 it was great to re-create the public discos of the 70s and 80s when soul and disco music was at its height, it’s also been a chance to introduce a lot of the classic 12” tunes to a new audience and a younger generation. We have been playing to sell-out crowds at the Cedars Hotel in Stowmarket and have recently launched in Bury St Edmunds at Moreton Hall Community Centre where we have been playing some vinyl! Friday, 29th May is the next event at Moreton Hall Community Centre, so it would be great to see you. Take a look at what we’ve been up to by ‘Liking’ our Facebook page /SoulScene or visit:

In the late 80s when CDs were replacing vinyl Kevin Whomes joined the team starting as a lighting jock and going on to become DJ following the departure of Trevor who went on to run a successful post office and retail business in the town.
