EDITOR’S LETTER

WELCOME TO THE

AUGUST

ISSUE

Hello and welcome to the August issue! Blimey! It’s hot in the office right now! I know we were begging for the sun to come out, but this is extreme hotness! I miss rain... just a tiny bit. But with the summer holidays about to start, I suppose we really do want it to stay nice and warm for the kids to get out and about. A few of us here at the directory got to try out the new Aqua Park in Suffolk that has opened for the summer. It was amazing and really is a must-do for the older kids and their parents! Read all about our experience on pages 54-55. Our recipe on page 34 is great for a nice healthy breakfast now there is no rushing to get to school and another healthy lunch option is on page 38. Going away? Our beach fashion on page 60 will help you get your essentials sorted. Enjoy the long, hot summer and see you in September!!

Feeling the heat... With barely a drop of rain in the last two months, the weather has been perfect to enjoy the World Cup, Wimbledon and our glorious Suffolk surroundings.

However, these hot and dry conditions have also meant that the Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service has experienced its busiest period of the year, which looks set to continue in the weeks to come. I’m sure you have seen a great deal of local media coverage of field fires recently, most noticeably in Hadleigh, Chelmondiston and Great Wenham. I am pleased to say that we have managed and responded successfully to all fire incidents. 10 | AUGUST 2018

The rise in the number of these weatherrelated situations was anticipated, which at times has seen twice the number of calls usually expected. I have been keeping in daily contact with our Chief and Deputy Fire Officers, and am in admiration of the team’s commitment. Dealing with these fires, which can sometimes be complex, calls for a large team effort. Our firefighters have worked magnificently during this time, on occasion going from incident to incident. We ensure that regular welfare reminders are issued to all staff, particularly ensuring that they remain hydrated and fed.

I’d also like to praise our non-operational staff and control room operators, who have been dealing with exceptional volumes of calls and continue to ensure that fire appliance, vehicle and officer cover is maintained.

We all have a responsibility in our daily lives, to make sure that we minimise the risk of fires. Often the cause of a fire is accidental, or a natural occurrence, but there are steps we can take to ensure each other’s safety:

In these testing conditions, working together with partners outside the fire service is also vital to keep Suffolk safe. Our on-call firefighters often have their own careers and we are grateful to the businesses and employers who support them to respond at such short notice.

l Put out cigarettes completely out and do not throw them out of car windows

Many of the recent incidents have been fires in the open, which are likely to have spread more widely and quickly without the support of farmers and landowners. In the west of the county, there has been great collaboration with colleagues at the RAF bases in Lakenheath and Mildenhall, and our neighbouring fire services in Cambridgeshire, Essex and Norfolk have also supported Suffolk. This, of course, has been reciprocated. Investment in the safety of our firefighters and providing the best equipment and training possible has also been important during this time. The recent introduction of a drone has enabled incident commanders to quickly observe the extent of fires. This means that tactics and resources can be deployed efficiently. On the ground, the fleet of off-road “unimog” vehicles have prevented fires spreading, as they can quickly access difficult areas to extinguish them.

l Place disposable barbecues on bricks, do not place them directly on grass l Only barbecue at home and keep them away from grass, shrubs and fencing l Do not leave glass bottles outside, the sun’s rays can reflect through the glass start a fire l Report any signs of fire immediately by dialling 999 The hot weather can also bring its own temptations as we try to find ways to keep cool. The appeal of jumping into open water, for example rivers, reservoirs or lakes, is one which must be resisted: more people die each year from drowning than they do house fires. There are many dangers associated with open water, such as not knowing the water depth, what is underneath the surface and misjudging the temperature of the water.

We have also invested in extinguishing equipment which can force its way through walls. This allows firefighters to safely tackle fires from outside buildings, where fire maybe raging in confined spaces. The Cold Cut Cobra equipment makes it possible to ‘shoot’ right through brickwork or other structures, using a mixture of water and abrasive sand. Cobra has also proved to be useful at dealing with field and grass fires, water is often scarce at these incidents and the fact that this equipment uses very little water for a significant effect has proved very helpful. SOUTHGATE Community STOP PRESS – CENTRE RENAMED IN HONOUR

OF GARETH SOUTHGATE, BUT ONLY FOR A DAY!

The weather in July was hot with no rain and with the euphoria of England reaching the World Cup semi finals for the first time in decades, children from the adjoining Hardwick Primary School decided to mark the occasion. Donning replica England kits and lookalike masks they decided to re-name our Centre the Gareth Southgate Community Centre in honour of the England Manager. The results may not have gone the national teams way but their efforts made the local media and put our fabulous facility in the news again. Also making the headlines was the launch on 18 July of the Abbeycroft Leisure Southgate Community 5 km Run Walk Route. Starting at the Community Centre a band of around 20 intrepid runners and walkers ‘christened’ this new fitness initiative. Try it yourselves! There is map on the Centre wall facing the shops, and helpful red arrows on lampposts, trees etc around the route. Our thanks are also due to local councillors who helped fund the scheme from No Bingo in August. their ward allocations.

W hat’s been happening at...

HARDWICK Primary School By the time you read this the summer holidays will be well under way and sunning yourselves on the beach the last few weeks at school will be a distant memory. But what a fantastic end to the school year we had. Starting with Early Years they enjoyed a fabulous day out at Wandlebury Park, Otters and Rabbits held their Pirate day with parents involved in their pirate party. KS1 visited had a great day out at the seaside and visited the Sea Life Centre and Mad Science wowed children with great experiments at their assemblies. Year 4 took part in the Whole Class Ensemble music celebration day at Ashlar House and along with Year 3 joined members of the local community and councillors in the Southgate litter pick. And so to our sporting successes. Following on from the excellent performances at the County Gymnastic finals across the year groups the Year 1 & 2 and 3 & 4 teams travelled to the Regional championships at Leighton Buzzard and came home with 2nd and 5th places, an amazing achievement for the children and Hannah their coach. Adding to the Year 1 tournament win in May the Year 5 football team won their tournament without conceding a goal and the brilliant Year 3 team added to their SARS tournament win with convincing victory at their tournament scoring an incredible 20 goals and conceding just 4. Children from year 4 and 5 took part in the All Stars athletics event at the West Suffolk Athletics Arena and performed so well in the heat. The school celebrated England reaching the World Cup semi-finals in their football kits and even visited the community centre to rename it the Gareth Southgate Community Centre in honour of the England manager. The annual FoHPS Summer Fair was once again a huge success. Next we come to KS2 and an emotional farewell to our Year 6 children who have proved to be an outstanding year group. The month saw Years 5 & 6 taking their Bikeability training, all passing with flying colours. Year 6 received careers advice from the West Suffolk Hospital and took part in the emergency services Crucial Crew event. The whole school rocked with three amazing performances of the Year 5 & 6 production of Shakespeare Rocks, congratulations to all the children and especially the hard work from the staff involved. Parents of all children received school reports and were able to take part in the final consultations of the academic year with staff. Well done to the Year 6 pupils whose SATS results were a significant improvement on last year. So a fond farewell to our year 6 children who finished life at Hardwick with a fantastic entrepreneurial enterprise raising some ÂŁ430 profit for the MyWiSH Charity from their Santander Fiver Challenge. As always many tissues in use at the Leavers Assembly and everyone at school wishes them all best wishes as the take the step into secondary education at their new schools.

Frogs in Moreton Hall

W

hile some of us are soaking up the summer heat, some wildlife is struggling to adapt with the ever-changing temperature; amphibians in particular. Lakes and pond water levels have been lowering by the day, and its having a very negative impact on the animals living there, frogs and toads especially. This isn’t helped by the fact it is already thought that one third of ponds are thought to have disappeared in the last 50 years, and out of the remaining ones, 80% are thought to be in poor condition. But what can we do? We certainly can’t change the weather! Lakes and ponds serve as the places tadpoles grow. Even though they hatch from eggs in April, tadpoles begin the Metamorphosis stage around this time of year (the stage at which tadpoles grow front and back legs, usually takes up to six weeks). Without water to do this, the stage cannot be completed easily. But, there is

something we can do: add a pond to our gardens. As well as being beneficial to both amphibians and birds, ponds are also a very attractive garden feature. Even if you don’t have room for a pond, anything with water will no doubt be highly appreciated by the wildlife! Of course, frogs and other amphibians spend time on land. Most of this time is spent foraging, sheltering, or hibernating. To help with this, think about adding log or stone piles, long grass, compost heaps or even nooks and crannies under your shed, decking or greenhouse. Habitats that provide shelter, stay damp and provide a good source of insects and slugs to feed on are particularly beneficial. So, lets help some of our wild friends through this hot month. Dear reader,

We’ve had the pleasure of meeting some incredible people over the past month who want to help make a difference to all the patients and their loved ones here at West Suffolk Hospital and we want to tell you all about them. The first is the most amazing lady called Lauren Colchester. You may remember us telling you about an Enchanted Trail that took place earlier in the year, well the brains behind it all was Lauren. After receiving treatment for breast cancer she wanted to give something back and so set herself the task of organising the trail. The day was a huge success and all her hard work payed off. With the help of all her magical elf and fairy friends she raised an incredible £3544 for our WiSH Upon a Star fund, which helps enhance the care our young patients receive across the hospital. Our neonatal unit also received a wonderful donation of £300 thanks to Kirsty Bishop and her husband Richard, who raised the money by organising a caravan rally which included a raffle and games. The couple wanted to repay the kindness they received when their daughter, Sophie, was born 11 weeks prematurely. The third fundraiser we got to meet was the inspirational Chrissie Davis, who took on the challenge of swimming a mile. Chrissie has been a patient here at the hospital for over six years and has been looked after so well she has nothing but praise for our staff. She has been training for her swim for months and absolutely smashed it completing the sixty-four

lengths in just over an hour! As well as completing a personal challenge as Chrissie is blind, she also managed to raise an amazing £739 plus gift aid, which will go to our endoscopy unit. Finally, one donation that has already been spent was on Ward F10. They are now the proud owners of a cordless phone, four DAB radios and a CD player all thanks to Brian Wallace and his son Glenn. The pair decided to raise the money for the items after Glenn’s mother, Christine, was admitted here at the hospital before sadly passing away earlier this year. They said the care she received was amazing and she was treated with such dignity they wanted to give something back. With Christine loving her music they thought the radios and CD player would be the perfect donation to the ward where she was cared for. Well done to all our fundraisers for their hard work and also thank you to every single person who has donated to My WiSH Charity and helped to enhance the care at West Suffolk Hospital as every penny you give really does make a difference. If you have a personal challenge you would like to take on, why not raise money for our charity at the same time. Get in touch with one of the team to see how we can help you. Many branded cooling sprays are available or just fill a spray bottle with chilled water. A hand held fan, battery or hand powered, can also help. Do come along and find out more about living with, and managing, Lymphoedema and Lipoedema in a relaxed and friendly setting, along with a cuppa and biscuit.

Summer continues! A few general tips to make the summer sunshine more enjoyable for those living with Lymphoedema and Lipoedema. Avoid exposing the affected area to heat and sun, which can cause inflammation, so protect your skin from the sun by covering up with clothes or wearing sun cream with a SPF of at least 30. Best to use SPF sun cream AND insect repellent before any exposure to the sun. Don’t forget you can still burn through your compression hosiery. Some patients find applying sun cream before putting on their compression garments helps.

Never use a sunbed! Whilst in a car or sitting in direct sunlight do ensure that the affected limb is covered. Its best to avoid extreme temperature as too much heat can increase swelling of the affected limb(s). Avoid using saunas, hot

The 19th hole Welcome back to the 19th Hole, its been another

stunning month of golf and weather, this is turning into the best summer in many years. The Open championship made for some amazing viewing as always. The course was in true links condition, burnt out and running hard and fast.

So with a newly crowned Open Champion, we now move on to the last major of the year in August with the USPGA Championship at Bellerive. The 2018 PGA Championship is the 100th PGA Championship that will take place from August 9–12 at Bellerive Country Club, Missouri. This will be the second PGA Championship and third major at Bellerive. It will also be the last held in the month of August; just before the 2017 tournament, the PGA announced that the Championship will move to May in 2019. There are pretty of other events to look forward to in August as well, here are more dates for your diary. European Tour WGC-Bridgestone Invitational European Golf Team Championships US PGA CHAMPIONSHIP Nordea Masters D+D Real Czech Masters Made In Denmark PGA Tour WGC Bridgestone Invitational PGA Championship Wyndham Championship THE NORTHERN TRUST Dell Technologies Championship Coaches Corner – SHORT GAME!! This month’s coaches corner looks at SHORT GAME and how using a different set up can help you around the greens. If this is an area of your game that isn’t as strong as it could be then lets, see what we can do to help. This section is in partnership with PGA LIFE 365 YouTube channel, feel free to search for this and other videos in their set up for success series. If you like their videos, please give them a like and don’t forget to subscribe to the channel for all their latest video releases.

SET UP – These three simply changes that we suggest will allow you to use the simple putting style chipping technique a lot easier. Raise the handle of the club you are chipping with to match the angle of your putter.

Stand in slightly closer to the golf ball.

As a reaction to both of the first points you will feel you should now grip lower on the grip. TECHNIQUE – People often say you should use a putting style technique around the greens. This style is great, however without the above changes to your set up you will struggle to make the putting style technique work consistently. Move the ‘’Y’’ Shape you make with your arms and the club back and forth in a putting style action. This allows you to make a low risk and consistent movement with your short game shots. Give this SET UP and TECHNIQUE a go and let us know how you get on! If you wanted anymore help with as or any other aspect of your game, then I would be pleased to assist you in enjoying this great game more. If you quote MHD or SGD when booking your first lesson with me then you will receive £5 off, below are my contact details please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Sybil Andrews Academy

Congratulations to students in and out of the classroom As another school year ends at Sybil Andrews Academy, we would like to wish you all a very wonderful and relaxing summer. The end of the school term is a great chance to take a breath and reflect on the many achievements from our students, staff and the entire school community. It is always great to start with a big congratulations. Well done to the SAA Starlets who have retained their title at the Future Cheer competition in Bournemouth. Well done to all the girls and Miss Earrye for delivering a fantastic performance for yet another year running and for bringing home the trophy. In addition to a fantastic sports day, a year of sporting achievements were also recently celebrated at our Sybil Andrews Academy Sports Awards 2018. Congratulations to all students for their hard work and sporting achievements throughout the year. Teaching our students about the wider world is always important and we were delighted to 26 | AUGUST 2018

welcome our partner school, Shanghai Music Bay. Great fun was had in lessons and our students enjoyed learning some Mandarin. Students continue to impress with their achievements out of the classroom as well. A big Sybil Andrews well done to Year 9 student. Hollie, who raised ÂŁ250 for charity by running a quiz for her local community. The school year ended under some incredible Suffolk sunshine as we enjoyed a fantastic Year 6 transition experience for our soon-to-be new Year 7s. Our new students have been introduced to our school day, lessons, new and existing staff, but mostly they have had the opportunity to get to know each other and hopefully make some new friends along the way. We are very much looking forward to officially welcoming them into the Sybil Andrews community in September. Have a great summer one and all. Trenica King, Headteacher, Sybil Andrews Academy

Positively Crafty is a warm and

welcoming group of members who support each other and help each other to achieve their crafting projects. They all have different things they can do more easily than others so if anyone needs a helping hand, somebody will always offer to lend one. They like to take a break part way through when a drink and a slice of cake is always welcomed. Members like to try different things and if we provide material for a class, members are reimbursed for those materials. Tools are provided too if you do not have some basic ones of your own. Crafts that have been achieved are card making, tea light jars, decoupage, post-it books, calendars, silk cards, tissue collage, mosaic tiles to name but a few. If you would like a distraction from your pain, to make some new friends and turn your hand to crafting why not come along and give it a go. Come along and join in for 3 hours a month and take a little time out for yourself, you will receive a warm, friendly welcome. There is a small fee to cover the costs and a nominal fee to craft. Carers can come along too.

28 | AUGUST 2018

Positively Crafty meet on the first

Thursday of each month from 1pm-3pm in the small hall at Southgate Community Centre. By coming to crafty you are immediately enveloped in warmth, encompassed in emotional support and given something to look forward to and at the end of each session, to go home with a sense of achievement. In July CPSG’s presentation was about homeopathy which is based on the principle of treating ‘like with like’. A holistic form of medicine that treats the whole person both physically and emotionally. Many health conditions can be treated in this way. If you have a discipline or topic of interest you would like to share with us please give us a call or email. (details below) We have many dates to fill in the new year. Members enjoy the interaction, are attentive and like a broad variety of speakers to keep up their interest. CPSG’s next meeting is on Thursday 16th August and the presentation is all about the ‘History of Fans’. If this is of interest to you why not come along and join us, you will be very welcome. For more details about the group please call on 07724 187774 or email info@ chronicpainsupportgroup.co.uk or visit www.chronicpainsupportgroup.co.uk

Shaving

vs axing

Which One Is Better For Hair Removal and Why? This is an age old debate that has seen no winner! Waxing is somewhat painful while shaving on the other hand is slightly risky, but rather painless. Many women do not mind the nicks and cuts that are part and parcel of shaving. Yes, shaving is painless, less messy, and certainly less expensive. That being said, waxing has many benefits over shaving in the long run. Read on to more on both options...

SHAVING How It Works: Needs no explanation, does it? Yes, shaving removes hair at the skin’s surface. You simply cut the hair visible with a razor! Best Suited For: Legs, arms, and underarms. If you have lighter and finer hair, you can hope for better results with shaving. Do not attempt a bikini hair removal with a razor! Pros: Quick and easy. Shaving is also, inexpensive and rather painless. Shaving creams make the process all the more easier as it moisturises the skin and keeps it soft. Cons: Hair regrowth is very quick as it is cut at the surface. The regrowth is also blunt and may appear thicker. Cuts, nicks and razor burns go hand in hand with shaving. You will also be prone to ingrown hairs. Average Cost: Razors and shaving cream are very inexpensive and can be bought at most shops / pharmacies.

30 | AUGUST 2018

HEALTH & BEAUTY

WPROFESSIONAL WAXING

How It Works: Hot wax is applied to the region you wish to wax and removed in the opposite direction of the hair growth rather swiftly. Yes, it will hurt but it will pull the hair out from the roots. Best Suited For: You can wax your legs, arms, under arms legs and even bikini areas. Those who have coarse, dark and stubborn hair too will benefit from waxing. Pros: Removes hair from the roots and keeps your skin smooth and hair free for at least three weeks. You can enjoy smooth skin with waxing for as many as six weeks depending on the thickness and type of hair. Cons: You need to wait for your hair to regrow to wax again. This is because the wax needs at least a quarter inch of stubble to be able to grasp and pull it out. The treatment or procedure can be painful at times as the hair is ripped out at the roots. Waxing can also cause ingrown hairs in many women. Average Cost: You will spend anywhere between £10-£70 for salon waxing. The cost will vary depending on the salon and the areas you wish to get waxed. Statutory Warning: Do not drink and wax! If you think a glug of alcohol will ease the pain, you are mistaken. Alcohol will tighten your pores and make the whole experience more painful and nightmarish. Instead, choose good quality wax. The better the wax, the less painful the experience will be.

PRESS REPORT ON OUR JULY MEETING Moreton Hall WI welcomed Edward Crichton from Lacy Scott Auctioneers as our speaker for the evening. Edward gave us a very informative, entertaining and amusing insight into the life of an auctioneer. This included his appearance on the TV programme Antiques Road Trip when an item purchased from a ‘junk shop’ in Margate for £60, turned out to be a very rare camera which sold at auction for many thousands of pounds.

FOOD & DRINK

Kids Eggy Brekkie These eggy pots are a great way to start the day, and the kids can get involved along the way. Asking kids to help make the pots is a fantastic way to get them to be less fussy if they normally turn their noses up at tomatoes or spinach. Ingredients: 4 eggs 8 cherry tomatoes 100g (3½oz) spinach 1 knob butter 2 slices ham 25g (1oz) cheddar, grated 1 pinch salt 1 pinch black pepper 4 slices brown bread, to serve

Method: Ask the children to lightly crush the cherry tomatoes, with a fork, in a mixing bowl and then to distribute evenly in the bottom of 4 ramekins. Melt the butter in a pan over a medium heat. Add the spinach and cook for about 1 minute before spooning the wilted spinach into the ramekins over the tomatoes. Get the kids involved again – ask them to tear the ham into strips and place on top of the spinach. Crack 1 egg into each of the ramekins and season with a pinch of salt and pepper. Finally sprinkle some grated cheese over the top. Cook in an oven set to Gas Mark 3, 160°C, fan 140°C for 10-15 minutes, or until the egg whites have set. While they’re cooking, get the children to toast some brown bread. Serve with the eggy pots.

Pea, Feta & Summer Herb

Frittata

Use your favourite soft herbs in this thick grilled omelette with peas, cream cheese and courgette- we like dill, mint and parsley

Ingredients:

Method:

300g new potato (such as Jersey Royals), halved if large 4 eggs and 2 egg whites Splash of milk 1 garlic clove, crushed 1 tbsp gluten-free wholegrain mustard Handful mixed soft herbs, such as dill, mint and parsley, roughly chopped 3 tbsp cream cheese 1 tbsp olive oil 1 courgette , coarsely grated ½ tsp chilli flakes 140g petits pois (defrosted if frozen) 100g feta cheese, crumbled 50g sundried tomato, drained and roughly chopped 100g bag salad leaves, to serve

Put the potatoes in a pan of salted water, bring to the boil, then simmer for 12-15 mins or until tender. Drain, leave to cool, then thinly slice. Whisk the eggs and egg whites with the milk, garlic, mustard and herbs, and season generously. Add the cream cheese and fold through just a little so that some lumps remain. Heat the grill to medium-high. Heat the oil over a medium heat in a 23cm non-stick frying pan. Add the potatoes and fry for about 5 mins, until they start to turn golden. Add the courgette and chilli flakes, and continue to fry for a couple mins more. Stir through the petit pois. Tip the egg mixture into the pan and scatter with the feta and tomatoes. Cook over a gentle heat for 10-12 mins until almost set. Pop the pan under the grill and cook for 3-5 mins until puffed, golden and cooked through. Cut into wedges and serve with a crisp green salad.

Hitting The Wall BY ANDREW SOUTHWOOD

Run 69 miles, from Carlisle to Newcastle, following the route of Hadrian’s Wall? Yeah alright. Seems like a perfectly sensible idea. 6:59am – I can do this. I can win this! Oh, the blind optimism of the start line. Nothing beats it. 11:10am – Mile 27. I probably shouldn’t have started like a Parkrun, but you know how it is? People were cheering, I saw some camera flashes and I got a bit carried away. At least I have my first drop bag to look forward to. Oh wait, that was at the checkpoint I passed a mile back and forgot all about. Oops. 1pm ish - Mile 35. My body is refusing to accept any form of solid fuel. This is not good. My watch tells me I am 4000 calories down, and it never lies. I have a bad feeling about this. Mile 40 something. Jog, retch, walk – repeat. A sequence that lasts about 2 minutes from start to finish, but will get me to the next pit stop in 4 long miles. A dozen or so joggers pass me over the next hour or two, 42 | AUGUST 2018

all offering encouragement. I wipe my beard and thank each one of them for their kind words before carrying on with my relentless routine, maintaining forward momentum. This was a stupid idea. Never again. Time no longer means anything but it’s probably mid afternoon. Mile 44. The big pit stop - at last! My change of clothes is here, which is nice, although I wish I never took my socks off as the sight of my red blistering feet is unnerving. Everyone around me is eating pot noodles and huge plates of buffet food – piling in the fuel. I eat 3 frazzles, a mouthful of quiche, and a couple of ibuprofen and feel quite pleased with myself for keeping all that down. I might try a jelly bean in a minute, then again, I might not. This is like an out of body experience. I think I’m at about 55 miles, and rumour has it the final pit stop is just 5 miles away. It may as well be 500 miles, I think to myself, or possible say out loud? Right. Focus on that runner ahead. When they jog, I jog. When they walk, I walk.

Possibly mile 60. It worked. Unlike my expensive watch, I’m still alive. This check point is a beautiful sight. A heavenly oasis of sweet tea and cake. My stomach finally agrees, 8 hours since its last intake, to accept help. A young Geordie in Hi-Vis tells me we started 13hrs ago, and I have no reason to disbelieve her. I maintain impetus and try to cover the distance as efficiently as I can in my somewhat depleted state. My body has one last flirt with sickness then suddenly I feel alive and full of energy. With 5 miles to go I am running on clouds along the banks of the Tyne. Passing weary participants that last saw me on my knees several hours ago. I don’t want the end to come. My legs know what to do, I don’t need to do anything else. I believe I may even be laughing. I cross the iconic Millennium Bridge and over the finish line. Well, I think to myself grinning like a Cheshire cat, I could easily take a couple hours off that - next time…

West Suffolk leads the way with

Electric Vehicle Roadshow

The first in a series of initiatives designed to encourage residents and businesses to switch to electric vehicles, will take place later this month. West Suffolk councils will be holding an Electric Vehicle (EV) roadshow in the arc on Saturday 25th August from 9am to 5pm where it will highlight the financial, economical and environmental benefits of EVs. The Councils already operate charging points in car parks in Bury St Edmunds, Haverhill and Newmarket and keeps demand under review. It will shortly be announcing the details of a pilot scheme designed to make it even easier for residents to charge EVs outside their own homes. On top of that West Suffolk councils will be holding an event specifically aimed at local businesses as part of the West Suffolk Business Festival in October. They already offer a Greener Business Grant which will match fund a business up to £1,000 towards the cost of an EV or company charge point. Cllr Alaric Pugh, Cabinet Member for Planning and Growth at St Edmundsbury Borough Council said: “There is no doubt that EVs are the future. The Government intends to end the sale of petrol and diesel cars in the UK by 2040 but we want to make that choice easier for our residents and businesses now. “We recognise that given West Suffolk is a beautiful rural area, for many people, 52 | AUGUST 2018

some journeys aren’t always possible by any other means than by car. So while we continue to encourage people to walk, cycle, or use public transport where we can, we are realistic that many of us use cars – and so we are taking the initiative to make EV an easier choice by making charging points more readily available.” Cllr Lance Stanbury, Forest Heath’s Cabinet Member for Planning and Growth said: “We know that EVs are cheaper to run – generally a quarter of the cost of petrol or diesel per mile – and where technology has dramatically improved they can make long journeys on a single charge which means they are now a more realistic option not just for residents but for businesses including trades people and small scale suppliers. “On top of this, by switching to EVs people are helping reduce air pollution which Public Health England says cost the country £42.88 million in health and social care costs last year, a figure it warns will rise to £5.3 billion by 2035 unless air pollution is addressed on a national scale. So come along to our roadshow and find out more.” The EV campaign is part of the Councils’ wider work around cutting air pollution, work which includes reducing vehicle idling and encouraging greater use of clean energy particularly solar energy.

MAKE A

THIS SUMMER! A new leisure activity has opened on Alton Water – Aqua Park Suffolk! And we were thrilled to be given the opportunity to ‘test the waters’ when a group of us from the magazine headed over to Aqua Park Suffolk to see what all the fuss was about. to go through the T&C's and sign your online disclaimer. Once we’d arrived and signed in, we were all given our wetsuits to put on. We were then moved swiftly through to the safety briefing. This was not only entertaining (the kids enjoyed the warm up dances) but very beneficial too, as let’s be honest, you are in deep water!

O

ur party consisted of myself (40 something), Mike (not-quite-40), Joe (11), Jacob (11) and Elijah (9), sadly you have to be 8 or older to take part, so watching from the bank and assisting Gemma and Cat with the photography was a slightly frustrated 6 year old who is counting down the days until he will be able to get his turn!

Immediately after the briefing you are given your life jacket which is very snug and very buoyant – don't worry, they don't

get in the way of having fun and if you are a weaker swimmer, it will keep you afloat with ease! And then we were off! With a little dip of my toe in the water, I decided it was pretty chilly BUT by the time you have made your way to the first platform the feeling of cold water had gone. The wetsuit really does its job! We started climbing up onto the inflatables which are really sturdy and feel really solid even with my weight! The first climb was a big slide which Joe

actually on it, it seems much higher. Another firm favourite was the bouncy pillow, one person sits on the launch pad and the other leaps off the platform on to the other end, sending the other person flying through the air and splashing into the water. We found that this worked much better with the adult sending the children flying – Elijah particularly took off when I jumped on it. Less so when Mike tried to send me flying, the word 'flop' springs to mind!

and I went plummeting down together and this started us off on our hour long festival of fun and laughter! There are so many different platforms and obstacles to try. Unfortunately the very large slide that we all had our eyes on had not been anchored down yet so we didn't get to try that one.

It certainly was tiring for us oldies, I felt like I’d done a session in the gym, but the kids, as always, showed us up and could probably have kept going for a 2nd hour!

I would highly recommend taking the children big and small during the summer holidays, we all returned home laughing and chatting about the fun we had. Alton Water is a great venue with plenty of space for picnics and walks. There is a cafe (although be warned this closes at 4:30pm), where you can get hot and cold drinks, snacks, ice creams etc and parking is just £3 for the whole day.

Get out there and enjoy making a big SPLASH this summer at Aqua Park Suffolk!

One of our firm favourites was the diving platform – from this you can jump, twist, dive, flip… it doesn't look that much from the waters edge but, when you're

**UPDATE as of 23rd July 2018** You may have seen in the local press reports that Aqua Park Suffolk has had to temporarily close due to blue-green algae being found in the water. Richard Drinkwater from Aqua Park Suffolk has said: “The closure is a precautionary measure as the safety and health of our customers is our top priority. Anglian Water regularly tests the quality of the water in all its reservoirs over the summer to be sure it is of its usual high standard and safe for water sports. Algal blooms are a natural occurrence and therefore difficult to predict or prevent, they are purely a result of the record breaking period of warm weather. “We have now proactively invested in ultrasonic technology which we are hoping will reduce algae levels and mean the Aqua Park can reopen sooner. Anglian Water will be testing the water twice daily to measure any decline in algae numbers and we will reopen the facilities once algal levels return to normal.”

r e n r o C t f a r C WELCOME TO THIS MONTH’S CRAFTY COLUMN.

Every month I share a crafty activity to try at home. I’m Michelle and I own the crafty foxes. I run adult and children’s workshops, children’s crafty parties, after school clubs, hen-dos and a wedding/events mobile crafty creche. Check out all my workshops on my website www.thecraftyfoxes.co.uk

This month’s make is a Sun Catcher to hang in your garden or bedroom window. You will need a muffin tray (preferably an old one no longer used for cooking) some pony beads, an oven, fishing wire or cotton, a drill and a grown up! • Fill the bottom of the muffin trays with the beads in a pretty pattern. Do each one differently and try and use some clear beads if you can. • Heat at 200°C for 20 minutes but check every 5 minutes. Open a window and try not to inhale as the plastic fumes are quite strong! • Allow to cool and then press out of the tray • Drill a small hole in the top and thread fishing wire or cotton through the house.

Hang somewhere that will catch the sun!

Garden Confidential

by Paul Clarke

What to do in your garden in August... Surely no one can complain about the wonderful summer weather we have been having this year in Suffolk. However for the gardener the absence of any rainfall has meant our lawns have turned into straw coloured dustbowls and watering containers and hanging baskets has become a daily need to avoid the plants shrivelling up in the warm humid conditions. Apart from doing a rain dance there is little that can be done other than to go with the flow. Those who have put in rain water butts will be in a better shape for watering their gardens and of course grass is very tough and it will return to its lush green colour when it eventually rains.

This months poem... “What wondrous life is this I lead! Ripe apples drop about my head; The luscious clusters of the vine. Upon my mouth do crush their wine; The nectarine and curious peach. Into my hands themselves do reach; Stumbling on melons, as I pass, Ensnared with flowers, I fall on grass. Andrew Marvell, Thoughts in a Garden

GIANT HYSSOP – BLUE FORTUNE

If you are designing a garden border and want some height to the middle or back then Hyssops are great additions. Attractive to the bees the long-lasting, tiny flowers are arranged like a bottlebrush. The green leaves are peppermint scented and aromatic. On the down side they can be short-lived and you will probably have to replace every few years. Flowering from July to October Blue Fortune is perfect for a sunny border. The faded flowers can be left and pruned the following Spring. It can be propagated by semi ripe cuttings grown from seed but probably easiest to buy a pot grown specimen from a garden nursery.

Pauls jobs for the month Flower Garden

n If you do nothing else this is a month for deadheading flowers regularly n Lavender can start to look a bit untidy once the flowers have faded. Use a pair of shears to give it a good trim back. n If you haven’t done so already give your wisteria a prune n A number of flowers such as Aquilegia and Lady’s Mantle will turn to seed this month. if you want extra flowers then let these seeds drop . However if you don’t want loads of extra plants then make sure you remove all the flower heads. n Many hedges will also benefit from a light trim to keep them tidy to avoid a lot of work in the autumn when growing starts to slow. n Remove fading stems and leaves from Geraniums to encourage new growth.

Pauls

GARDEN SERVICES

n Irises have finished flowering so now is a good time to increase your stocks by dividing the rhizomes and planting them elsewhere in your garden.

General Maintenance n Trim hedges in August. n Fill up your bird baths. n Keep your ponds topped up and make sure they are safe for children.

Vegetable and Fruit Garden n Snip off the tops of tomatoes plants once you have 3 or 4 trusses of fruit developed . Also continue to remove any side shoots ( except for bush tomatoes). n Lift and dry onions and shallots n This is the time to start harvesting early potatoes, lettuce, beetroot,

marrows , pumpkins ,runner beans apples and pears. n With the warm weather watering in particular is best done in the evening or the morning as are routine jobs such as weeding, hoeing and dead heading spent blooms. n Now that any fruit has been picked you can cut back gooseberries, redcurrant and blackcurrant bushes. Also cut down to the ground any spent raspberry canes. n You can cut strawberry runners from their parent plants n Provide support for any heavily laden fruit trees. Branches can break

or take over a pathway unless you tie in supports. n You can prevent ants and other crawling insects from climbing your fruit trees by using sticky glue bands.

AUGUST’S 5 MONEY SAVING LAWN MOWING TIPS T

his summer seems like a strange time to be discussing lawn mowers and lawns. Most of our lawns resemble the Serengeti in the dry season, brown and bare. However you can almost guarantee a change in our weather for the summer holidays, so here are a few lawnmower and lawn ideas that may surprise you.

1 Choose your lawnmower by garden size

Small (up to 100m2), Electric/ battery/hand push, 300mm cutting width. Medium (100-250m2), Electric/battery/petrol, 350-400mm cutting width. Large (250m2+), Petrol, 400mm plus cutting width.

3

2 On average we mow our lawn 20 times a year The lowest cost is a scythe, then a hand push mower. Even electric mowers are low cost, a 1150W mower costs just £1.61/year (30 mins cut), a larger 1850W mower costs £5.20/year (1 hour cut).

4

These ideas can save you £££’s! For more ideas on saving money & the environment visit ecofrenzy.com

5

Mulching lawnmowers grind down grass cuttings

Watering a lawn can be costly (and selfish)

Which of these would you say uses more fuel?

as you are mowing, then leave them on your lawn. They can save cutting time by half, reduce cleaning up time, and feed nutrients back into your lawn. They also hold water, reducing irrigation requirements.

during a drought. Collect rainwater and use grey water (from sinks, showers and laundry) to water your lawn. You only need to do this once a week (but make sure the ground is thoroughly drenched).

Eco Plus lawnmower, Smart Rider lawn tractor or Craftsman Garden Tractor? Surprisingly there was virtually no difference in fuel usage because of the significantly varying cutting time.

EcoFrenzy is a not-for-profit organisation founded by Tony Whittingham and Simon Dry. If you have any queries please visit www.ecofrenzy.com/contact-us or email tony@ecofrenzy.com 64 | AUGUST 2018

Rougham Control Tower Aviation Museum Echoes of The Past ‘18 The first Sunday in August each year has become the annual date for the Museums main fundraising day. Sunday August the 5th this year combines the fun of the stalls, military vehicles and re-enactment to the solemnity of a short commemoration remembering those who served on the airfield in WWII.

Last year the good weather brought out over 600 visitors to the Tower, at a time when the new road had not been opened. This year our Sunday attendance has escalated, it has already rocketed to over 600. Can ‘Echoes’ exceed our expectations of people enjoying a very different day? Food is available all day, gates open 10.00am. There is plenty of parking and the new road will take straight to our door – please follow the signs. 68 | AUGUST 2018

Our visits for groups, both on a Sunday and by appointment, are continuing. If you would like us to host you, your group or company please contact us.

Saturday & Sunday September 8th & 9th. ‘Museum Visit By Air’ – two days of light aircraft visiting the airfield. We have already received requests to attend by stall-holders so, apart from the aircraft, other attractions will be on site. Remember the Tea Room will be open – including our BBQ for Burgers and Hot-dogs. More details next month. Our ‘External Speakers’ continue at our monthly Open Evening – The Last Tuesday of The Month. Our programme continues in September with more presentations. The new list will be announced soon – watch this space. Again, please put these dates in your diaries – all welcome. CHURCH NEWS

A Local Ecumenical Partnership between the Church Of England, United Reformed Church and Baptists Together

WE ARE YOUR LOCAL CHURCH BASED IN SOUTHGATE COMMUNITY CENTRE. COME ALONG AND JOIN US ON A SUNDAY – WE ALSO HAVE MID WEEK ACTIVITIES FOR PEOPLE OF ALL AGES.

CELEBRATING THE NHS AT 70 We are very fortunate in this area to have some superb health care services, and dedicated people staffing them. The NHS was based on the idea that anyone should be able to access medical care regardless of their financial situation. As it comes to the end of its seventh decade, it can claim to have raised life expectancy across an entire population, eradicated polio and diphtheria, pioneered liver, heart and lung transplants, and made us a society that cares for its most vulnerable. Aneurin Bevan, the Labour Health Minister who did more than anyone else to bring it into being, famously said: I’m proud about the National Health Service. It is a piece of real Socialism. But it is a piece of real Christianity too, you know.” Every week or month when people get their payslips, it is easy to catch yourself feeling resentful, as though your money is being taken from you. In the Bible,

Romans 13:7 says: ‘Give to everyone what you owe them: if you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honour, then honour.’ Paying taxes is an intrinsic part of discipleship, not only because it’s a legal requirement, but because in the UK our taxes are used to meet the needs of the sick, the dying, the very young, the elderly, and the disabled – care of whom is a mark of true faith (James 2:14-17). There is a growing consensus that the NHS is facing a funding crisis, the impact of which many of us will have felt. A survey carried out by the King’s Fund in 2017 found that 60% of respondents supported a tax rise to sustain the NHS. The 5th of July encouraged us to give thanks for the evidence of God’s goodness visible in wider society; every month enables us to contribute to that. For all of us, tax payers or not, comes the encouragement to seek to show something of ‘real Christianity’ in our everyday lives.

With time running out, expert deep sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) is recruited by a visionary Chinese oceanographer (Winston Chao), against the wishes of his daughter Suyin (Li Bingbing), to save the crew-and the ocean itself-from this unstoppable threat: a pre-historic 75-foot-long shark known as the Megalodon. FILM REVIEWS MAMMA MIA - HERE WE GO AGAIN! 12A Reviewed by Sally Walters

After seeing the first Mamma Mia many years ago and being a secret Abba fan, this was a mustsee for me with the girls! So along we went to the opening night, having pre-cocktails before taking our seats, it started with a feel good song, not one that I remember from Abba, but very catchy! The film starts with flashing back to when Meryl Streeps character was a young girl, graduating and deciding to go off travelling alone, which tells the story of how she meets the 3 guys who could have been the father of her daughter that she fell pregnant with in Greece. The actors and actresses playing their young characters were spot on look wise, so you got who was who within an instance! It then keeps going to the present day where her daughter (the same actress playing her from the original film) is trying to renovate the hotel in Greece for a grand opening, with her husband being absent due to work commitments, she has invited all her dads and mothers friends over including her grandmother (the one and only Cher!), but without telling you the whole story as I don’t want to ruin it for those of you who have yet to see it, if you liked the first Mamma Mia, I am sure you will love this, although a couple of my friends were not so impressed, and I think I was the only one sobbing towards the end, so take a few tissues just in case! 8/10

THE INCREDIBLES

Reviewed by Jacob and Elija Dube

We went to watch Incredibles 2 at the start of the summer holidays while our Mum was at work. It is about a family of 5 who all have super powers and follows on from the first Incredibles film. During the film, we find out that the baby has lots of super powers. Superheroes have been banned so they secretly go on missions to fight the baddies and the mum is the main character in this film. The main baddy is Screen Slaver who has an evil plan that the Incredibles have to stop. As with all good films, the goodies win. It was a good film and we think our little brother would have particularly enjoyed it! We would give it...

WHAT’S ON

Get active on your

SUMMER HOLIDAY If you haven’t arranged an exotic holiday in the sun then try these alternative ideas for having fun on your summer break. Summer is the time of year we all yearn for. The sun brings longer, hotter days, winter coats are a distant memory, acres of pale skin are uncovered, at home the barbecue is wheeled out, and in fact everything just looks better in the sunshine. But if your summer involves sweating on a packed commuter train and waiting eagerly for the weekend only to find the promised sunny weather is replaced by more wet, grey and drizzly days, then you will be counting the days to your summer holiday. If you haven’t been organised and booked your flights, hotel and hire car, bought a new swimsuit, and purchased a family-size vat of sunscreen, perhaps you’d like to try something a little different this year. Turn the page for some suggestions... AUGUST 2018 | 89

WHAT’S ON

Get active on your SUMMER HOLIDAY CAMPING

Most of us have some experience of camping. Maybe it began with Girl Guides or Scouts at the age of 10, or fast forward 12 years to a music festival where you may have pitched tent for the weekend with friends in a sea of campers stretching as far as the horizon (nearly as long as the queue for the portaloos!). For many people, the attraction of camping is the community feel of a campsite, cooking in the open air, being close to nature, and the flexibility to pack up and move from place to place. Today more than one million Britons go camping every year in the UK and abroad - with France a particularly popular destination. 90 | AUGUST 2018

COOKING HOLIDAYS

Is taking in the sights or lazing on the beach not enough for you? Why not combine your holiday with learning new culinary skills. You could visit parts of the world where your favourite dish comes from and learn how to prepare it yourself. You will learn something new, be able to sample quality local produce, and impress your friends with your new found knowledge and skills.

SCUBA DIVING

For the more adventurous, scuba diving is an excellent way to explore what the underwater world has to offer. The best way to start is to have a taster session in a local swimming pool or with a diving club. To dive unsupervised on holiday, but with a similarly qualified diver, many people do a course with a schools before they holiday. Another route is to go on a diving holiday and earn your qualification in the idyllic waters of Egypt’s Red Sea, Australia’s Great Barrier Reef or the Italian Riviera resort of Portofino. Whichever method you choose you’ll find many people passionate about diving who will be happy to share their watery adventures with you.

SNORKELLING

On the British coast or in warm seas abroad, there’s always something to see underwater. Coral reefs and seahorses in the Mediterranean or rock pools and crabs in Cornwall, you might be surprised by what you discover. Snorkelling only requires a mask, a snorkel and a pair of fins, all of which can be hired from many resorts. To ensure comfortable snorkelling just make sure you select the right sizes. You don’t have to be a fantastic swimmer or go into deep water to enjoy snorkelling and you can remain at the surface the whole time. Just remember to use sunscreen and keep in sight of the shore.

SAILING

Imagine the exhilaration of skilfully piloting a yacht with billowing white sails across the open ocean. You don’t have to be Ellen McArthur to master sailing. Children as young as 8-years-old can learn, and with most schools you can enrol the entire family on a sailing course. Sailing boats come in various shapes and sizes including toppers, lazers, catamarans or yachts. There are many sailing clubs throughout the UK but you might want to ask a travel agent for details on sailing holidays in the Canaries, Thailand, Greece or Croatia. With so many options it’s time to leave the congested hotel pool behind.
