Time Shift

BY ANDREW SOUTHWOOD

T

his year marks the centenary of one of the more quirky dates in our diaries. ‘Daylight saving’ was introduced on our shores back in 1916 following its success in Germany and Hungry as a novel tactic to save money and improve productivity during the war. It’s had a few blips and controversies along the way, but is now a firm part of British culture. Do you remember when the clocks’ changing was fun? “Oooh – an extra hour in bed tonight!” or “I’m still going to get up at 9am even though it will technically be 10am. Ha ha!”. These are the sort of phrases that make you laugh out loud (or slap them in the face, depending on your mood) once you are blessed with children of your own. In the autumn, that ‘extra hour’ is more hassle than I could have possibly imagined. For the last couple of years

54 | APRIL 2016

I have sneakily adjusted the clocks upstairs by just half an hour on the first night, then move them back another 30 mins the following night. This is enough to trick my two older kids into staying in bed for the extra 30 mins without getting fidgety. The move to BST in the spring is even tougher. I mean, suddenly it’s bright daylight at 7pm, so clearly that’s not bedtime now? Yes? Err… well, no. Here black out blinds, doubled with lined curtains, are worth their substantial weight in gold. The staggered time shift method can also be effectively employed. At just under 2 years old, our youngest doesn’t seem to have grasped the reasons for the change from GMT to BST either. I tried explaining to her the statistical studies regarding road safety issues and benefits for the economy behind having long sunny

evenings… but I think I lost her at the Seasonal Affective Disorder part. Really, what I’m saying is, for millions of us, the clocks change is more about how you can amuse a baby/toddler for an extra hour at silly o’clock, or how you persuade your kids to go to sleep when the sun is still shining. Actually gaining or losing an hours sleep yourself has absolutely nothing to do with it. After all, when you are awake 4 or 5 times a night, every night, dealing with young kids, then frankly an hour either way doesn’t even register on the scale. However, having said all that, those long sunny evenings cannot come soon enough for me. It opens up a whole new window in terms of timescales for getting those outdoor jobs done. Oh, and of course for socialising merrily in beer gardens and all those sort of things I am lead to believe young people still do.

Let courage

be your anthem!

A quote I recently read on social media said ‘courage is the power of the mind to overcome fear’. That is easier said than done I thought to myself, because fear so often creeps into my thought patterns without making any sort of flashy announcement notifying me of its impending arrival. How charming fear is! I find myself with all sorts of mountains to climb, obstacles to navigate and jobs to do with my mind clouded with fear fuelled thoughts. Can I really do this? What if I fail? This past weekend I was tasked

CHURCH NEWS

So, honestly, did you get caught out on April Fools’ Day? It’s the one day of the year where children and adults alike do their best to trick others into believing the unbelievable. During an interview on BBC Radio 2, on the morning of 1 April 1976, the astronomer Patrick Moore announced that at 9:47 AM a once-in-a-lifetime astronomical event was going to take place. The planet Pluto would pass behind Jupiter, temporarily causing a gravitational alignment that would reduce the Earth’s own gravity. Moore told his listeners that if they jumped in the air at the exact moment this planetary alignment occurred, they would experience a strange floating sensation. The BBC received hundreds of phone calls from listeners claiming to have felt the sensation. One woman even reported she and her 11 friends had risen from their chairs and floated around the room. I don’t remember falling for that one, but one thing I know, no one likes being called a fool, much less being made to look like a fool. Jesus once told a story that’s become known as The Rich Fool. The story tells of

a rich farmer who had more wealth than he knew what to do with. After signing the papers for corporate expansion (bigger barns), he congratulates himself and decides to throw himself a party. Everyone in his town would have said he was a huge success. But God had a different take on him: ‘You fool! You will die this very night. Then who will get everything you worked for?’ Good question! Jesus concluded by saying that a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God.

CHURCH NEWS

This story speaks loudly to our generation. We so often define life in terms of material possessions, physical fitness or the future. But what happens when we lose one or more of those things? What happens if we lose our job? Or the stock market crashes? What happens if illness takes away our physical ability? If we define life in these things, we will be devastated. Having possessions is not wrong, it is putting our security in them that is wrong. The rich man in the story is not condemned for being rich. He is condemned for being selfcentred, for not using his surplus to help others, for leaving God out of his life. He had invested himself totally and completely in things that are temporary, the things that we can’t take with us, instead of investing in his relationship with God. Let’s not be fools the April, but take some time to think about where our own riches lie.
