WELCOME TO THE

ISSUE

Hello and welcome to the July issue of the Southgate Directory.

Crossword winner!

competition

Well, my sun lounger is still sitting in the shed feeling very sorry for itself due to the weather not playing ball at the weekends. Hopefully I will get some sunbathing in soon because before we know it, it will be Autumn and the nights will be drawing in! This month we have a charity shop challenge especially for the kids. All the items featured are from the St Nicholas Hospice Care children’s shop on the Hardwick precinct – did you know it was there? If you need to kit the kids out for the summer holidays, it’s definitely worth a look, you really don’t need to spend a fortune. Our recipes on pages 30 and 33 are BBQ themed, so when the sun does come out you could try them out and impress your guests. As usual, our what’s on section is full of ideas for getting out and about this July, so we hope you enjoy this issue and we will see you in August for more news and features!

Gemma

Well done to Mr Marrable of Appledown Drive, Bury who answered all the crossword clues correctly in June’s issue of the directory! He won 2 SUNDAY ROASTS & A BOTTLE OF HOUSE WINE AT Moreton Hall Community Centre. If you are feeling lucky turn to page 46 and see if you can solve this month’s crossword! (Answers for last month’s crossword are on page 36)

As always, please do get in touch with us if you have any local issues that you’d like us to look at for you – its great to see that so many of you read this directory (we get a flurry of calls/ emails after each issue is published which proves you do!) UPDATE ON NEW PARK

If you have been down to “The Dump” lately you will see that work is pushing ahead for our lovely new park, which is still on schedule to be ready for the start of the school holidays. We were really pleased to be able to secure the funding for this and are delighted that the young people of our estate will soon have a much improved and much needed play area.

Action packed agenda for Southgate Community Centre We are both trustees of the Southgate Community Partnership, which runs the Community Centre. There are lots of events coming up at the centre, so put the dates in your diaries! The next community bingo is on July 10th at the centre – all welcome and cash prizes available. There is also a coach trip to London on 10th October, the return of the family Christmas disco on 12th December and we are looking at starting regular film nights. Plans are also well underway for next year’s Valentines Ball and Community Funday. We are lucky to have such a brilliant Community Centre with so many different groups and activities all year round – please do support them if you can.

AREA AROUND HARDWICK SHOPPING PARADE

We have been fighting for some time to get the area around the Hardwick shops tidied up. The shopping parade, green spaces around them and the car park in front of the shops are all owned and managed by an independent company, called Blair Estates - not the local Councils. After several unanswered emails, Sarah contacted them again this week after she was contacted by residents who were concerned that the grass in the area hadn’t been cut for weeks, the flagstones looked dirty and the paint on the pillars at the front needed freshening up. Another area of concern is the car park, which desperately needs relining as cars are now parking dangerously as a result of the bays no longer being visible. Blair Estates have finally replied, saying they are waiting for quotes for all the work and have promised to update us in the next few weeks. Watch this space!

Community Garden

update

Since the last issue, we have made some progress with the community garden project as St Edmundsbury Borough Council have agreed to help with insurance for the project, meaning we can now go ahead! We are now looking for volunteers to help, so if you like gardening and have a few hours to spare either regularly or on an ad hoc basis, or even have any contacts who may be helpful, please do get in touch with annwilliamson60@gmail.com

LOCALITY BUDGETS

Borough and County Councillors get a small pot of money to give out in grants to community groups or events in their areas. We have used ours for various things including the website for the residents association, new toilets at the community centre, the new park, new football kit for the Hardwick Primary team and decorations for the Valentines Ball. If you run a community group and would like to apply for a small grant for a specific project or piece of equipment, please do be in touch – we would love to hear from you

HIGHWAYS ISSUES As County Councillor, Sarah spent a morning in June walking around the whole division (which includes Westgate and Southgate) with Highways Officers from Suffolk County Council. We had a long list of outstanding issues, from trees on Rembrandt Way that needed cutting back, new signage on Cullum Rd roundabout and Steward Road, a possible crossing on Sicklesmere Road to markings on Laundry Lane that were taking forever to be repainted.

Sarah reports: “I had a list of 43 outstanding issues and it was really helpful to be able to show Officers where the problems were and hear more about possible

solutions and timescales. The Officers have promised to push forward with issues where they can, and I am pleased to note as a result that the lining on Laundry Lane has at last been repainted, which proves they were listening!” We have also heard from Highways that the consultation has now finished around the various yellow lines in the area; this work has been ordered and should be completed by September. This includes the double yellow lines opposite the bus shelter by The Macebearer to make that area safer. JULY 2015 | 09

W hat’s been happening at...

HARDWICK Primary School We returned from half term straight into our annual Healthy Living Week, which saw the children (and staff) spending the week in their PE kits, focusing on what it means to be healthy. During the week, the children took part in a variety of physical activities, including Box2bfit, aerobics and tennis to name a few, and we ran a competition to see who could design the best healthy meal. The two winning meals will be combined into one and the winners will help prepare it with our school cook, serving it at lunchtime this week! Healthy Living Week culminated with Sports Day, which after a lovely week of fine weather was put in jeopardy due to the threat of thunderstorms. After a delayed start, the rain held off and the children spent the morning taking part in team events, testing their running, jumping, throwing and agility skills. Everyone competed in the spirit intended and the overall winners were the Green Team!

10 | JUNE 2015

With only a few weeks of this term and academic year remaining, the children are still busy learning new and exciting things. Key Stage One recently went to the Sea Life Centre in Great Yarmouth and this week the Early Years children are off to Linton Zoo. Key Stage 2 are preparing for their summer production. This year they are performing the musical, ‘Annie’. The sounds of, ‘It’s the Hard-Knock Life’ have been reverberating through the school corridors! The Friends of the school are holding their summer fare on Friday 3rd July, 3.15-5pm. You are more than welcome to attend and if you’re lucky you may find me in the stocks! We look forward to seeing you. That’s it for now, speak to you all again next month! Best wishes, Daryl Jones Headteacher

LOCAL NEWS

Dear reader,

It’s a Bury Knockout set to be the biggest and best yet West Suffolk Hospital Charity’s flagship fundraising event – It’s a Bury Knockout – is set to be bigger and better than ever before when it returns to Hardwick Heath between noon and 4pm on Sunday 26th July. A total of 21 teams will be battling for Knockout glory, including five from different hospital departments. Alongside the main event, sponsored by Enterprise and Barnes Construction, there will also be six local demonstrations and more stalls and attractions than ever before to bring a fantastic family fun day experience. Dave Gooderham, fundraising manager for West Suffolk Hospital Charity, said: “The fundraising team has been working hard to ensure our fourth annual It’s a Bury Knockout is our best yet. “We wanted to provide something for all the family and with everything from archery to the funfair, craft stalls to laser tag, we are confident we have achieved that.” Businesses and organisations from across Bury St Edmunds and

beyond have signed up to take part in this year’s Knockout event, which will be hosted by a brand new supplier offering more fun, games and bubbles than ever before. Demonstrations will include local dance acts and the Rock Choir as well as Punch and Judy and circus skills. While the event supports the entire hospital, the Forget-Me-Not Fairground will be offering old-style games to raise money for the charity’s dementia campaign. More than 30 different stalls, including plentiful food and drink outlets, are other attractions alongside the chance to have your photo taken with the police tractor, a fire engine and lots, lots more. Dave added: “We are confident there is something for everyone and we hope the public will join us on our big hospital charity day. “For those on foot, admission is free while there is just a small £1 charge for cars.” For more information on the Knockout, please visit www.buryknockout.com.

If you have any questions about fundraising, any of the events mentioned above or how you can help the hospital, please contact fundraising@wsh.nhs.uk or call 01284 712952 12 | JULY 2015

We are very fortunate to have lots of waste bins and grit bins in our area; these are the responsibility of the Town Council, as are allotments, War Memorials and the Armistice Day commemoration. Finally, at last we have good news about the community garden in Home Farm Lane. After a long wait it’s anticipated that we will be able to start work there at the beginning of September with the help of a Ranger from St Edmundsbury Borough Council. It’s our intention for this woodland to remain pretty much as it is now but with the planting of bulbs and some shrubs that will attract bees and butterflies. We will be laying chippings to widen the pathways and generally managing the area. If you would like to be involved with this project please contact the NNRA and when we have a firm date we will be in touch. Ann Williamson Chairman Nowton Neighbourhood Residents Association (NNRA)

variegated yellow archangel BY WOODLANDS WAY

Y

ellow archangel is a beautiful plant which only lives in ancient woodlands; Bradfield Woods for example has a good population alongside its pathsides where its yellow flowers provide nectar to bees. Some time ago, garden plant breeders took the native plant and bred it to have pale blotches on its leaves, creating the variegated variety of this plant. It became popular because it was easy to grow in shade, and because some people like plants with blotchy leaves. Unfortunately, the variegated yellow archangel has the ability to grow quickly and to spread over large areas; so much so in fact that it is a serious weed on habitats across the country. In 2012, this invasive plant was abundant in Pond Covert, presumably arriving in the garden waste which some Raedwald Drive residents disrespectfully dump in

our wood. It has outcompeted most other plants, forming a uniform carpet with few other plants surviving. Since 2012, variegated yellow archangel has continued to spread and degrade the woodland plant community. Woodland Ways spent a considerable time trying to remove it by hand-weeding and by using a flame weed-gun, but neither was sufficient to make any significant difference. St Edmundsbury Borough Council, at our request, has now sprayed the variegated yellow archangel in Pond Covert. In the short term, the dying vegetation will look unsightly, but its worth it if it does its job. It is anticipated that woodland plants such as blackberry, herb robert, dogs mercury and others will naturally grow in its place. Further sprays may be needed if some survives, but the future is much more positive now.

Join us at Woodland Ways... Why not join in with a Woodland Ways work party to help improve the Moreton Hall woods? No experience is needed and all are welcome; we’ll show you what to do. For more information please see www.woodlandways.org.uk, see the Woodland Ways noticeboard in the Community Centre, contact Nick Sibbett on 01284 723847 or email information@woodlandways.org.uk.

Welcome to the 19th hole, a place for golf tips, reviews and everything golf related.

Welcome back, I hope the golf is going well and the first few competitions have been a success. This month sees the eyes of the world descend on Great Britain, as The Open Championship is staged. The tournament returns this year to the home of golf St. Andrews in Scotland. So this month we will turn our focus to this great championship, and the players that might well have their name placed on the famous claret jug and not forgetting the famous St. Andrews course itself. The championship - This championship is like no other in terms of its prestige, and one of a few tournaments around the world that people can qualify for without being a member of the professional tour. Players from all over the globe pay their entry fee, and set out to try and fulfil their dreams of playing in The Open Championship. In terms of players that can win this great championship, you can’t now look past Jordan Spieth after he has won the first two majors of 2015. Others to watch for me will be of course world number one Rory Mcilroy, also the winner last time The Open was played at St. Andrews Louis Oosthuizen after playing well at the U.S. Open. The course - St. Andrews is for many the home of golf, this traditional links design with hard fast running fairways and deep bunkering is a true test for any golfer. Players from all over the world pit their wits against this traditional course every year. It’s been the scene to many famous moments in golfing history and I am sure this year’s Open Championship will only add to its great history and produce a great champion who for four days has

managed to beat the thousands of entrants from around the world and become the champion golfer for 2015. Coaching Tip Hybrids - perfect for any situation. TEE SHOTS - Tee the ball low and play it more like a fairway wood shot, forward in the stance allowing for a sweeping action through impact. If you’re missing fairways using a hybrid club from the tee will allow you to gain some control and find more fairways helping your second shots. You may give up some distance but you won’t waste shots chipping back out onto the fairway. SHORT GAME - Another great use for your hybrid is for short chip shots around the green, it should be used like a putter and allow you to avoid rough ground around the green and then to complete the rest of the journey on the putting surface like a putt. SET UP – Feet closer together to limit speed, putting style grip to encourage the smooth pendulum stroke and more weight placed on the lead foot (left in this image) this will allow you to strike these chips crisply. Give it a try in practice you will be surprised just how good you can be around the greens with your hybrid. For more coaching advice or book a lesson please feel free to contact me. Quote MHD for £5 off your first golf lesson with me.

Waxing or shaving which is better?

That’s one of the biggest questions as far as unwanted hair removal is concerned. Unwanted hair growth is a constant point of worry and concern for many and there is always a debate of what is the right way to get rid of it. Here is a list of pros and cons of waxing and shaving, two of the most common methods adopted for hair removal:

Waxing

Shaving

l It removes hair from the root which results in hair-free skin for weeks l It leaves the skin feeling soft even if you touch it against the hair growth side l It is more long lasting than shaving l New methods like chocolate wax decrease the pain slightly and result in smoother skin l It is a natural way of hair removal as wax is herbal l It will eventually reduce hair growth

l It is a pain-free and quick way to get rid of unwanted hair l You can do it yourself at home or anywhere, without any assistance l The arrival of electronic shavers and epilators have further simplified the process as you don’t need water or gel to do it l It is cheap as razors are not expensive and the electronic ones are a one-time investment l Shaving comes in handy during a beauty emergency when you don’t have time to go to a salon

Pros

Cons

l It is a painful procedure and waxing time and again may make the skin loose l If you have sensitive skin, waxing can cause redness and boils l If the hair is too fine, then waxing does not help. It works best on full grown hair l It is time-consuming and you need to keep in mind the hygiene factor of the salon you are getting it done at Things to keep in mind Make sure the salon uses disposable waxing strips The wax should be hot but not too hot that it burns your skin Apply a cooling pad or ice after waxing to soothe the skin

Meet our new Columnist....

Nicola Delglyn Osteomyologist Physical & Nutritional Therapy

Treatments to beat pain for adul

Hello, my name is Dr Nikki Delglyn (Osteo)

If you wish to find out more about me and my clinic, please keep an eye out for my new website, or join me on Facebook and twitter, where I post some great short health, fitness, nutritional and wellness articles.

In my clinic I help to look after people from all different walks of life from retirees to professional & international athletes, from mums to children; from high impact sports injuries sustained in Rugby & American Football (go Bury Saints!), post trauma rehablitation (work & vehicle related) to sprains & tweaks.

I’ve just managed to take a few hours out of clinic to pen my first article for the Bury St Edmunds Directory and it’s a blistering hot day. I’m sitting outside under a parasol with my sunglasses on whilst the sun is shining, bathing me in glorious heat! Even the animals that frequent the garden are taking things easy in this temperature, lazing in the shade of a tree. Absolute bliss! So this month, I thought I’d combine my introduction to the magazine with the work I am doing to help increase awareness of the British Association of Dermatologists Sun Awareness campaign.

and I run my own Osteomyology clinic in Great Barton, just outside Bury St Edmunds, I work with several UK charities as well as being mum to two sporty girls.

Chances are I can help most people and if I can’t I’ll be honest and straight. Trust & integrity is very important to me & my aim is to facilitate a quick and effective recovery from injury so my patients may return to sport, the active lifestyle they love or quite simply be able to work. Although I am not a medical doctor, I have undertaken many years of specific training allowing me to practice as an Osteomyologist. I love what I do and have qualified in a variety of different holistic therapies, from back care and rehabilitation, sports massage/therapy and rehabilitation to reflexology, aromatherapy and emotional release techniques, to name but a few! I am also a qualified Personal Trainer, Exercise to Music instructor, Nutritionist and Adult Education teacher. I enjoy the fact that I can seamlessly combine therapies and knowledge to create a totally unique Osteomyology treatment, that is safe and appropriate for each individual patient.

Careful exposure to the sunshine can be of great benefit to us providing us with a better night sleep, it enhances our mood, can lower our blood pressure and can provide us with the “sunshine vitamin” D, it may even help protect us against certain cancers. However, over exposure to UV rays from the sun and sunbeds can be very harmful to our health. Although fair skin is most at risk of the serious consequences of over exposure to UV rays, even black and Asian skin can be at risk. In clinic I see lots of people who work outside and athletes who train and play outside, so I make a point of advising them on a good sun

HEALTH & BEAUTY

Physical & Nutritional Therapy n for adults, children & athletes care regime, as advised by the Association. Their skin advice is to slip, seek and slap! Slip on a Shirt – protect your skin with lightweight clothing and don’t forget to wear a hat that protects your face, neck and ears and a pair of UV protective sunglasses. Seek out Shade – step out of the sun before your skin has a chance to redden or burn. Keep babies and very young children out of direct sunlight. When the weather is warmer, spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm when the sun is at it’s brightest. Slap on sunscreen - look for: l High protection SPF (minimum SPF 30) to protect against UVB rays from the sun, which causes sunburn l The UVA circle logo and/or 4 or 5UVA stars, to protect against UVA rays, which cause skin ageing and sun damage

may be present. All my patients get screened. I am not a dermatologist or a medical doctor, but I have been trained to identify moles and skin blemishes that may need medical attention. So rather than ignore them, I note them and refer patients back to their GP. I have referred several patients back to their GP, which has lead to an early diagnosis of various forms of skin cancer for those patients and successful treatments in all cases. Unfortunately, my training and knowledge came too late for our family with devastating consequences. However, since then I have made it my business to be nosey and help others, so they don’t go through what we did as a family.

Apply your sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before going out in the sun, and reapply every 2 hours and straight after swimming and towel drying.

For those who are technology savvy, there is The World UV App, which is available for i-Phone and android smart phone users. It lets you see what the peak UV is virtually anywhere in the world and matches it with handy sun protection advice according to your own skin type – great if you travel for business or on holiday.

Don’t get caught out, never let your skin burn. Not everyone’s skin offers the same level of protection in the sun. If you are pale skinned, like I am, and burn easily you are at greater risk and need to take extra steps to protect your skin from sunburn and sun damage.

To learn more about the work I am undertaking with the British Association of Dermatologists, further information on skin cancer, moles and are you at risk, my website is currently under construction, however, you can contact me via phone or FB.

As a therapist, I see lots of people and get to see lots of skin! It’s such a great opportunity for me to look and assess moles and skin blemishes that

Stay skin safe and enjoy the summer, see you all in the next edition!

he Importance of drinking water...

Did you know that our body is composed mostly of water which needs replenishing regularly like any other nutrient. Our muscles are 75% water and our brains are over 80%. These are two key factors in our performance, so they require optimal resources to function at their highest potential.

dehydration and reaching for a glass of water or two is a much healthier alternative to coffee or fizzy drink stimulants. The immune system will also be depressed when it lacks water, so we are more likely to catch a cold or the flu when we are weakened by dehydration.

Many people confuse thirst for hunger so it is a good habit to respond to that first “hunger” signal with a glass of water and see if you are still hungry afterwards. Water can act as an appetite suppressant by distending the abdomen, which then sends the message of fullness to the brain.

So How Much Water Should I Drink???

There are immediate symptoms of dehydration, which include dry skin, constipation, fatigue and headaches. There are many disease conditions that result from long-term dehydration since all the body’s systems are dependent on adequate water intake, making the consequences of dehydration endless. Most mid-afternoon energy slumps can be attributed to

As a general rule I will ask my clients to aim for between 2 - 2.5 litres of water a day, the volume will be different from client to client depending on genes, current water consumption and current fitness levels. If the body is not used to handling this much water, it will need some time to adjust to the increased volume. Build your water consumption over a period of 2-4 weeks. Paul Chek and Charles Poliquin who I learn from, have more specific calculations on how to work out the exact amount of water you should consume a day. If you would like me to work this out for you feel free to contact me.

If you have any questions you would like to ask please do not hesitate in asking. Joe Sadler Personal Trainer M: 07917 714557 E: ptjoesadler@hotmail.com

HEALTH & BEAUTY

Beating Breast Cancer Linda is back this month to keep all our readers updated on her very brave battle with breast cancer... Linda

“To Burn Or Not To Burn” – That is the question! I feel like I have a battle going on in my mind and I don’t think it’s going to be a win win situation! I had my appointment with my Oncologist on 20th May but all the days leading to the appointment that I didn’t have to attend the Hospital for one thing or another was easy – No to Radiation… I feel fine, I look well, and I can do this without putting myself and my body through more toxicity. However, the day of my appointment, I fell to pieces. I had a whole host of questions revolving around the Radiation issue, but what it boils down to it would seem, are statistics. The likelihood of getting a local recurrence is very high in the next couple of years (according to their studies) and if it does come back locally, then there is a 50% chance that it will have also spread to another organ. Of course when you hear statistics like that, it scares you. The facts are, that it is impossible to say one way or another whether there are still active cancer cells in my body. So I have to make a decision without knowing the full facts (and believe me that is difficult for me!). Who would want to put themselves through having Radiation if they didn’t have any remaining active cancer cells in their body? I know most people will go through this and do everything that they are advised to do, but for me I struggle. I read too much, I question a lot, I look into things from every angle, I 28 | JULY 2015

talk to lots of different people with and without experience of going through Cancer, I don’t have a ‘gut’ feeling on anything anymore because it is all getting too much. Can I have the confidence in my own mind to turn down Radiation and continue to do what I can to support my system and keep me well, or will I constantly worry more about recurrence? Even if I have Radiation, I know that I will be thinking about the Cancer returning – most people I am sure do, and that’s another issue that I will have to try and deal with in this process. So it’s a catch 22 situation – I am damned if I do, and damned if I don’t! Do I go through with the Radiation and therefore I have ticked all the boxes in the conventional treatment protocol. I can then say I have done all that has been recommended from the NHS. My mind is in overdrive constantly every day and I don’t know what to do for the best. Time is not on my side with the radiation as they recommend that you have the treatment within 12 weeks, and no longer than 6 months of surgery. The longer it is left the less effective it could be. So I have signed the consent form and I have been to Addenbrookes for another CT scan for the measurements and I have been tattooed. Yes, I have got to my mid forties without being ‘inked’ and now I have 3 ‘tatts’! They may only be small dots, but hey - that’s beside the point – I am allowed to elaborate a little! I have also received my letter with all my treatment dates starting on

30th June. 15 days of Radiation that takes me to the 20th July. My birthday is the penultimate treatment. I just hope I’m not suffering from any side effects and am well enough to celebrate. So basically the days are passing quickly and I am still not convinced – I doubt I will be even if I go through it. I am probably worrying myself silly but I tend to look at all the worst possible outcomes first and foremost. It doesn’t help that I went through the chemotherapy and that didn’t have any positive effect on the tumour – what’s to say Radiation is going to work? Realistically we won’t really know, as no one can be sure if any active cancer cells remain! It doesn’t inspire me to put my body under more strain and long-term damage unnecessarily. I am armed and prepared, and will do the necessary to counteract the effects of the radiation and so I have my herbal tinctures made up, my radiation protection remedy and my burn cream – I’m just concerned about the effects within my body that you can’t see and what damage it does both short and long term. If anyone is going through Radiation, I have been doing some ‘homework’ and have a few tips on improving the radiation experience: Diet is obviously important in radiotherapy as is detoxing – drink lots of clean water, eat a rainbow of colours within your diet and include lemon, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, parsley, beets, avocado, coconut oil, garlic, onions, spirulina, wheatgrass, chlorella and seaweed salad to

HEALTH & BEAUTY

name but a few. Flaxseed could reduce harm and even repair tissues after damage. Drink green tea – it has a protective effect on healthy cells and enhances the radiotherapy’s success with cancer cells. Essiac, astragalus, cat’s claw, Echinacea, grape seed extract will all boost and regenerate your immune system. Curcumin (turmeric) can reduce damage to your body. Also Vitamin D – if we get some sunshine that is, otherwise supplement each day. Magnesium helps to strengthen the liver and milk thistle helps reduce the accumulation of dead cells, toxins and other side effects of the liver. Dandelion tea also helps eliminate toxins from the liver as does Epsom salts (I have bought a 5kg tub!!). Latest research does say that it is advantageous to keep taking all the supplements. Cancer cells lose their ability to regulate uptake of antioxidants and the antioxidants and the radiotherapy work together to kill more cancer cells, whilst simultaneously the supplements protect the healthy cells. If fatigue is a problem consider taking the supplement Carnitine. Keep your liver strong – detox regularly after radiotherapy. I think I have bored you enough about Radiotherapy and my concerns! Some other useful bits of information that I have found recently on this journey - The Hospice run Wellness days on a regular basis and I went along to one of the afternoons at the beginning of June. It was lovely to chat to other ladies and you had the opportunity of experiencing some complimentary therapy taster sessions. You could have a manicure, some reflexology, reiki or an Indian head massage. I had a taster of reiki and an Indian head massage. I had to laugh when the

therapist commented that I had a lovely shaped head! As we both said, that isn’t something that has been said to me at all! Still doesn’t inspire me to go out without any of my headgear on just yet! I attended a Health and Wellbeing event run by the Macmillan Unit earlier in the month where they held short workshops on Emotional Wellbeing, Financial & Benefits Advice, Diet & Nutrition and Exercise. It’s worth going along to these events as you will always pick up some useful information and meet some lovely people. I spoke to a couple of ladies that have been reading my articles and I had a tear in my eye from the lovely comments I received. Another thought I had last week was to sell or auction off some of my evening dresses and smart daytime dresses. I have acquired far too many dresses over the years for the various events that I used to attend, and barely worn them, so figure it’s about time that I sorted out my wardrobes and created some space (hopefully not for more clothes!). I have been in touch with the Macmillan Unit and have said that I will donate the proceeds to them. On Sunday, 28th June I will be spending my afternoon at Nowton Park at the Race for Life. My friend Ellen will be running for me in the 10k event on that day so I want to be there to cheer her on. I did tell her I couldn’t run a bath let alone 10k! I forgot to mention Tillie in my last article. She is doing well, 9 months old now and grown! I have started to leave her out the front a little more to get to know the neighbourhood cats, one of which chases

her every time and she runs straight indoors to me, one she seems happy enough to be around and another one she isn’t too sure about! Am still desperately trying to get her trained to use the cat flap! We have progressed to her using it if the flap is held open by some string tied to the door handle (and only when I am not there). She will not use it with the flap down! As for coaxing her indoors of a night time – that is a little game that we now play where I spend at least 5 minutes chasing her round the garden to get her in. At least when I do catch her she has worn herself out from running up and down and trying to hide in my flowers! It’s been quite some time since I last had a good laugh, but one of the films showing at the Cinema called “Spy” is definitely worth a watch! I actually cried with laughter at the end. However, it’s quite sad to realise that you haven’t laughed in some time. Hopefully the ability to laugh more will return as well as my own dry sense of humour…I do miss myself sometimes! By next month’s article I will have completed the Radiation (or will I …?) and hopefully be able to write my article without falling asleep at the laptop, which I am doing now!

RECIPE

BBQ tandoori-style chicken

Ingredients: 8 chicken thighs, on the bone, skin removed 2 tbsp lemon juice, plus wedges to serve large knob of butter, to serve For the marinade 125g pot full-fat plain yogurt 4 fat garlic cloves thumb-sized piece ginger, peeled ½ - ž tsp red chilli powder 1 tsp cumin powder 1 tsp garam masala 1 tbsp vegetable oil

Method: Using a sharp knife, slash the chicken thighs 3 times, going all the way down to the bone – this allows the marinade to get in, and means quicker and more even cooking. If you have the time, toss with the lemon juice and 1 tsp salt in a bowl and leave to marinate for 1 hr. Blend together all the marinade ingredients until smooth (add the extra lemon and salt if you skipped the first marinating stage). Pour over the chicken, cover and leave to marinate in the fridge for at least 3-4 hrs (overnight is best). Heat the barbecue to a medium-high heat, or heat your grill to its highest setting and line a baking tray with foil. Place the chicken on the barbecue and cook, turning often, for 20-25 mins until charred and cooked through. Or place the chicken on the foil-lined tray and grill for the same amount of time, or until charred on both sides and cooked through. Top the chicken with the butter and leave to melt, then serve with lemon wedges. 30 | JULY 2015

Residents of Moreton Hall will be

pleased to hear that they have a new owner in what was Fish ‘n’ Chicken (now The Moreton Fish and Kebab Bar) so we popped out to meet Tee and his team and of course sample his food! One of the things that first struck me was that it doesn’t look much different from the outside, however when you go inside you will see apart from the exceptionally clean interior is the addition of a kebab section!

At long last a local kebab shop I thought, no more 40 minute wait for a delivery from town. On speaking to Tee he was quick to tell us that he is here for the long haul and spoke with passion about his other restaurants, one in Hadlow and the other in Sevenoakes, Kent. It became apparent that he is totally customer focused and wants to ensure anyone trying his products will return. He then introduced us to Mehmet who has over 30 years’ experience in the kebab and takeaway industry and is the most enthusiastic person I have ever met when it comes to preparing and making a kebab. He explained that all their sauces are homemade, garlic mayonnaise, curry sauce and of course chilli sauce. My mouth was already salivating in anticipation for what I was about to be presented with.

I can honestly say that I was not disappointed, the meat from the donner skewer was fat and gristle free, not greasy and very tasty, the salad (which is on display for all to see) was fresh crisp and chilled, next was the chilli sauce. That was it for me, without a shadow of doubt, the best chilli sauce I have tasted since moving up from Kent. The portion size and price is exceptionally good. Next I sampled the chips and curry sauce; this was fast becoming a man vs food challenge! Freshly cooked chips (Tee and his team only use locally sourced potatoes and rape seed oil) which tasted great and again weren’t greasy. The curry sauce was amazing, very tasty with a nice kick. I couldn’t actually try everything, I thought I would leave some for you, but the cod (which again is on display in the chiller) looked fresh and ready for some batter. Don’t just take my word for it pop along and I am sure you will get a warm welcome, great service and fantastic food.

This month our meeting started off a little differently! Several of our members attended the Buckingham Palace WI Centenary Garden Party so they came dressed in their finery to share a few thoughts with us all! They scrubbed up pretty well I thought!! Our speaker for the evening was Nancy Merfeld, a Manager from Focus 12. This is a Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Organisation based in Bury. She shared with us the nature of addiction, withdrawal symptoms and the problems such dependence cause both the addict and their family and friends. Loss of jobs, home, relationships as well as health issues feature large in their lives. Nancy shared some failures and some success stories with us, the over-riding factor for success being a person’s recognition of their dependence, a wish to address their problems and the issues that maintain their drug use. A very interesting talk followed by questions and Nancy held our interest throughout. Another great evening!

Does your little one love to dance? FOR GIRLS & BOYS AGED 2–9 YRS

Well come along to a class at Dancing Stars. We are a small and friendly dance school offering weekly classes for children aged 2-9 at local venues and schools, plus adult tap for the grownups. Dance with mummy (or Daddy!) is a great introduction to dance. With the use of colourful scarves, pom poms and bean bags, plus instruments, bubbles and lots of great songs, we have fun joining in with the children as they build in confidence and develop coordination and social skills. We then offer a lovely ballet class, Little Stars Ballet. The children now come in on their own and begin to learn the first ballet steps. We pretend to be princesses and fairies and beautiful scarves become our butterfly wings. Every term we also learn a little song and dance and the children have had great fun performing at the community pantomime and fete. New for September is Sparkles an hour long class half ballet and half tap for reception and yr 1 age childen.

Jo Churchill MP has welcomed Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt MP’s announcement of a new deal for GPs. Mrs Churchill said: “On Friday 19th June, the Secretary of State announced that the focus of GP recruitment was going to be on the most under-doctored areas across the country. He has recognised that a huge surge in appointment demand and an ageing population has resulted in increased pressure on GPs, who increasingly feel undervalued and overwhelmed. I am pleased there is recognition for this problem. I have spoken at length with Combs Ford Surgery and a number of constituents who have raised concerns about the pressures placed upon the practice. There has been some difficulty with recruiting GPs. I have therefore written to the Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt MP to ask him what his department will do to assist practices in my constituency. I want to ensure they receive the support they need and that my constituents continue to receive a first rate service.”

Dad’s Away Days BY ANDREW SOUTHWOOD

I

don’t get out much. The social life of my 4 year daughter is more hectic than mine. It would appear that this is not unusual, and to many of us a chat in the playground at school pick up, or a brief exchange of pleasantries with the check out staff in Home Bargains, counts as socialising nowadays. However, about once every 18 months or so, 4 or 5 former work mates and I desperately try to free ourselves from family life to catch up properly over a weekend. It won’t surprise you to know that this takes literally months of planning, and even then people drop out or get caught up in some ‘issue’ at home. That said, we usually to secure a ‘boys night’ away, without children and without wives! This may conjure up images of The Inbetweeners films, or a club 18-30 weekend

54 | JULY 2015

break. Don’t be fooled, as even when we were within the “18-30” bracket (sadly that was some time ago now!) we never fitted that stereotype. For example, several years ago we had a bush craft weekend away, sleeping out in a wild bluebell wood in hammocks secured by our own hands, cooking fish over a fire (I still have nightmares about trying to get that fire lit using only a shoe lace and a couple of old sticks…) and being taught how to track animals by a survival instructor. There was no drinking, no crazy parties, but huge amounts of banter and laughter. The bonds and friendships forged between us remain strong even if we don’t meet again for a year or two. It has become increasingly obvious to me that the older I get and the busier

and more complicated family life becomes, the more important these short pauses from reality are. They are temporary flashes of light, whereby for a few hours we all forget we are really just middle aged dads, reverting back 15 or 20 years. The closest we will ever get to time travel. So, as the weekend drawers to an end, we invariably finish up sat in a cafe around a table with a large brunch, the pace slows. We all look forward; ready to greet our temporarily abandoned families with renewed enthusiasm and energy – despite all the fun, having missed them terribly. Given our borderline states of exhaustion this is a true show of what they mean to us and they will again have our undivided attention pretty much 24/7… at least for the next 18 months or so.

garden confidential BY PAUL CLARKE

PAULS PLANT OF THE MONTH

Alchemilla mollis What to do in your garden in July

This plant is commonly known as Lady’s mantle and is found in many gardens. Good in shady and sunny spots and can be used as ground cover as it seeds prolifically but also makes a nice edging if controlled. The soft gray-green foliage is combined in late spring and early summer with yellow blooms. Culpepper indicates that this herb, was often used as a poultice for bruises and wound healing and brewed as a tea though I have never tried it!

July is a wonderful month of richness in the garden. The strong colours of Roses sweet peas and dahlias are all in evidence. Whilst the vegetable garden can also be bountiful with the salad crops peas beans new potatoes and tomatoes providing some pickings. Of course any planned attempt at a barbecue in the garden always runs the risk of a shower but worth the risk!

This months poem... “’The linden, in the fervours of July, Hums with a louder concert. When the wind Sweeps the broad forest in its summer prime, As when some master-hand exulting sweeps. The keys of some great organ, ye give forth. The music of the woodland depths, a hymn Of gladness and of thanks.” WILLIAM CULLEN BRYANT, Among the Trees

• Feed dahlias once a week with a liquid tomato feed. You will • Use left over water in a freshly need to stake taller varieties boiled kettle to trickle over any and pinch out the growing tips weeds in your block paving of smaller types to encourage this should kill them in a few bushy growth days • Pick sweet peas regularly to encourage continued Lawn Maintenance flowering • Regularly cut the lawn but • collect ripe seed from forget don’t scalp it instead keep the me not’s and foxgloves and height of the mower fairly high sow in pots or scatter in shady areas

Flower Garden

• It is best to cut flowers from the garden early morning with a sharp secateurs. They will keep longer if you cut at an angle and immerse straight into a bucket of water or vase. • You can dry your own lavender flowers. Best time to do this is early morning when they are dry. Hang the stems in small bunches using elastic bands ideally somewhere dark . In about a month the lavender will be completely dry • Water hanging baskets and containers it is best to do this in the evening or first thing in the morning but anytime is better than not at all

Vegetable & Fruit Garden

• Harvest the first beetroot, spring onions, radishes and salad leaves. Don’t forget to sow some more for a later crop. • Once fruiting has finished give your strawberry plants a trim with a pair of shears, aiming to leave just a few leaves around the crown. New foliage will develop within a few weeks. Remove any mulch and weeds and clear away all debris from the crown. Put old leaves and straw on the compost heap.

Ponds

• Mulch rhubarb once the harvesting of the stalks is over • Harvest herbs regularly to keep them bushy and stop them going to seed

• Clear algae, blanket weeds and debris from ponds, and keep them topped up

• Stake tomato plants and pinch out all side shoots. Also cut off any leaves growing below the lowest ripening fruit trusses • If you have any space you can sow main crop potatoes, peas, cabbage and lettuce • Pinch out the tips of runner beans when they reach the top of the canes

BURY ST EDMUNDS

ORGAN & KEYBOARD CLUB Our club has been running for over 30 years, but there are some misconceptions about it. One is that you need to be a player yourself to visit the club - not correct. Also the word organ is misunderstood and appears to conjure up images of church organs, or Blackpool Tower (I do like to be beside the Seaside), or maybe the Hammond organ sound from the 60’s & 70’s. Modern organs and keyboards are able to emulate all instruments of the orchestra and more, and in the hands of a professional player can reproduce many genres of music from Classical to Pop – Show tunes - Film Themes - Big Band - Jazz - Brass Band – and more.

Our slogan is: “If you appreciate hearing good music played well, then you will enjoy an evening at our club”. At our concerts we get around 25-30 people through the door. Would you like to join us? We usually meet the 2nd Tuesday of the month at Southgate Community Centre. The doors open at 7pm and concerts commence at 730pm - with a break for refreshments & raffle and ending about 10pm. Entrance on the door is £6 for visitors/non-members, and £5 for members. For further information visit www.southgatecommunity.org.uk/ groups/organ-club

Finding affordable childcare during the summer break is one of the biggest headaches for parents. Yet because of the lack of places and the high cost, most parents don’t actually organise their summer childcare until a few weeks beforehand. The costs and shortage of places can be overwhelming, often meaning parents end up taking unpaid leave and using the bulk of annual holiday entitlement to be with the kids With family budgets being squeezed by the effects of the recession, our advice may help ease the burden.

Ask about flexible working

Parents of children aged 16 and under have the right to ask their employer for flexible working arrangements. Employers are obliged to consider any application for flexible working and can only reject it if there’s a good business reason for doing so. Flexible working takes several forms: either part-time, flexi time (choosing when to work), compressed hours (working your agreed hours over fewer days), staggered hours (different starting and finishing times for employees in the same workplace); job sharing; working from home for part or all of your hours; or term-time only working. Discuss these options with your employer to try and find an arrangement that suits you both.

Cut the Cost

If you’re receiving tax credits, you are eligible for help with holiday childcare costs, which increase significantly if your children are spending longer with their childminder or if they’re going to a playscheme. Depending on household income, parents may be able to get up to £122.50 a week for one child and £210 a week for two or more children. Visit www. payingforchildcare.org.uk for more information. Parents who get childcare vouchers from their employer may also be able to get some money for childcare costs through tax credits as well.

Use vouchers

Don’t forget there’s a wide network of summer holiday clubs which offer extended hours (often 8am – 6pm) and accept childcare vouchers as payment.

Find a playscheme

Visit your local library or your council’s website to find out about local authority summer playschemes. These are often run by voluntary organisations, local authorities or charities. These may run for part or all of a working day, giving you the opportunity perhaps to work flexibly during the summer break. For information on holiday clubs near you, call the Families Information Service national helpline on 0800 2 346 346.

Talk to other parents

Ask around at school to find parents who are also juggling holiday and childcare to see if you can take turns to work and mind each other’s children. This can help reduce the need for you to take unpaid leave. Your PTA should know of local childminders already providing care for children at your school, or other parents who may be able to help you with informal childcare arrangements.

Help at home

If you have more than one child and need full-time summer childcare, it might surprise you to know that a summer au pair may be a cost-effective option. Summer au pairs will provide around six hours of childcare a day for around £85 – £100, regardless of the number of children. It’s really important to find an au pair through a reputable agency: Look for those registered with BAPAA (British Au Pair Agencies Association)

Use the internet

For the days you’re off with the kids, remember that the internet offers a wealth of information on what’s available free, or low-cost, locally as well as nationally.

Hola amigos!

Are you all booked up and ready for the summer holidays? Not long till the end of term!

BBQs

women on wheels

BBQ’s are the best in the summer! What I like about them is that the dads are happy doing the cooking, the mums are happily chit chatting and the children are just being bonkers! My favourite foods at a BBQ are BBQ chicken, corn on the cob and hot dogs. It’s also nice just being in the great outdoors on and nice day, make sure you put on plenty of sun cream!

I have managed to convince my mum to enter us both for the sponsored bike ride ‘Women on Wheels’. It’s a 5, 20 or 50 mile bike ride starting at Nowton Park on Sunday 5th July. We quite like bike riding around Moreton Hall and out to Thurston on weekends so I thought we might as well try and do it for a very good cause since all the money raised goes to St Nicholas Hospice. We have signed up to the 5 mile route but are sure we can go further! We are aiming to keep biking with the other ladies to see how far we can get, I hope it’s to at least 10 miles so that we can get cake! I have been busy asking friends and family to sponsor us and if anyone else would like to donate to the local cause, you can do so if you go to the JustGiving page and search for ‘Women on Wheels Bury St Edmunds’ or ‘Mollyandkerrygobikeriding’. Good luck to anyone else taking part, I’m sure we would all appreciate any cheering if we go past you! I’ll let you know how we get on!

foot golf

I hope you all treated your dads and grandads to a special day for Father’s Day! If you were thinking of spending some fun time together doing something outside then try booking ‘Foot golf’ at Stonham Barns I’m sure your dad’s would enjoy it! We went on a nice sunny Saturday afternoon as a family and went round the 9 hole course twice. It’s the same rules as golf except you kick a football into a larger hole. We did lots of laughing at our kicks and my dad had to get one of our balls out of the ditch! Give it ago!

The Friends Life Women’s Tour We managed to snap the 100 cyclists as they passed by our office on Barton Road as we welcomed the opening stage of the race on Wednesday 17th June. The 2015 Friends Life Women’s Tour started off where the inaugural edition finished last May, in Bury St Edmunds. Here is a bit of infomation about the race...

In 2010 SweetSpot organised their first women’s cycling race, the Horizon Fitness Grand Prix in Stoke-on-Trent alongside the men’s Tour Series.

How do the teams work?

A year later this event grew into the Johnson Health Tech Grand Prix Series, running alongside the men’s Tour Series at up to half the venues each May and June and becoming an established and key part of the women’s racing scene in Britain, thanks to the ITV4 television coverage.

Generally teams will approach the race with riders in designated roles, such as a team leader to aim for a place as high as possible on the general classification, a sprinter to target stage wins, a specialist climber for the hillier stages and several designated helpers or domestiques.

At the National Launch of the Tour of Britain in March 2013 SweetSpot first announced their intentions to create a standalone stage race for the world’s top female cyclists, in Britain - the first event of its kind. Then at the final stage of the 2013 Tour of Britain in central London a women’s race was held, previewing moves that the Tour de France and Vuelta a Espana would announce some months later. Just a week after this SweetSpot received the news that The Friends Life Women’s Tour had been granted a place on the UCI calendar for May 2014, being granted the highest possible ranking for a stage race, 2.1, and putting it instantly on a par with the world’s top races for women. The first edition was a widely acclaimed success, attracting the world’s top riders and teams and widespread media coverage for women’s cycling in the UK. Swede Emma Johansson created history by winning the first stage from Oundle to Northampton, while then reigning World & Olympic Champion Marianne Vos took three stages and the overall Friends Life Yellow Jersey. As the Friends Life Women’s Tour grows, you will be able to look back upon past editions of the race via this page to reflect upon the story of each year’s race.

Each of the teams in the Aviva Women’s Tour will pick their six rider line-up from their fullseason squad of riders.

A domestique is a rider whose sole aim is to help their team leaders. Their role includes sheltering their leaders from the wind, fetching food and drink, to making sure their men are in the best possible position during the race, particularly important when approaching the finish. They also have to be ready to give up their bike if one of their leaders suffers a mechanical problem, such as a puncture. Domestiques do not share the glory of their team leaders, but they are vital to any team, whether aiming for stage wins or the overall classification. On each stage, the domestiques will work to protect the team leader and ensure their leader gets to the line first. If their leader does acquire a leader’s jersey it is their role to make sure the leader keeps the jersey too. When it comes to the sprinters, the entire team, including the team leader, will work together to get the sprinter to the finish line first with a leadout train. Of course thanks to the way the race unfolds with attacks and breakaways, one of the domestiques may find themselves elevated into the role of team leader thanks to their sporting performances. Business as usual I guess we have all heard this phrase many times and from many people. The questions we often don’t ask are What is this business? and how usual is it? The House of Lords some years ago agreed together that ‘the boss of a Christian Minister is God’! I wonder how many of you who read this would like to have the same boss as I have? It does lead to some interesting situations and decisions being made. We are told that God is perfect and has never made a mistake; therefore I have a perfect boss. Now there’s not many of those around, are there? So if God is the boss, what is his business? What does he expect me to do? 82 | JULY 2015

What does he expect his church to do? The first thing most bosses want is to meet and talk with their workers and my boss is no different. Every day he wants to listen to me and to let me know how he sees various things. He wants me to learn what it means to have a perfect boss and to encourage others to allow him to be their boss also. In other words - we have to do stuff his way! On July 11th many folks from various churches will be meeting for breakfast at Southgate Church. Having eaten together we will then spend some time talking with the boss. You may know this

better as ‘prayer’. And we will be talking to him about the folks and situations in our patch. Our hopes and dreams, our problems and fears. If you would like us to talk to the boss about what is important to you, write it down and hand it into the office in the Community Centre, (or pop it in the letter box) and it will be passed on to me. This is part of our ‘ business as usual’ On July 12th we have a guest speaker, Gavin Calver, who has spent many years as the Chief Executive of a National Christian Youth Organisation (YFC). He has a passion for young people, as do we in Southgate Church. He

This is part of our ‘business as usual’ There are many other areas of usual business, which include weekends away for fun and relaxation and some ‘listening’, eating together (both breakfasts and lunches) and many more. If you would like us to talk to our boss, God, about anything, let us know, we’d love to help. Revd Peter Gibson Minister of Southgate Church

A LABOUR OF LOVE Thursday 16th - Saturday 25th July 2015 Starring actors from the local community, this brand-new musical celebrates the labour of love that led to the reopening of Bury St Edmunds’ Theatre Royal in 1965! It’s 1959, and the Theatre Royal is a barrel store; derelict and in need of a new lease of life. Over the next six years, and against all the odds, the people of Bury St Edmunds and the surrounding villages finally returned to tread the boards. Based on the movers and shakers who worked so tirelessly, A Labour of Love tells the story of the special relationships that were forged and the hearts that were broken in realising a dream. Written by award-winning playwright Danusia Iwaszko with new music by Phil Gostelow and directed by Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds’ Artistic Director, Karen Simpson. An inspiring true story of a town, its community and what people can achieve when they pull together, this uplifting and toe-tapping musical will entertain all the family! Director Bill Condon Starring Ian McKellen, Colin Starkey, Laura Linney, Hattie Morahan, Hiroyuki Sanada, Roger Allam. Sir Ian McKellen takes on the role of the iconic Baker Street detective in this acclaimed drama. It’s 1947 and the world’s most famous detective, Sherlock Holmes, is long retired and living in relative anonymity in Sussex with only his housekeeper Mrs Munro (Laura Linney) and her young son Roger (Milo Parker) for company. Angry due to his former partner Dr John Watson’s mis-representation of him in the series of bestselling novels, his mind turns to his final case, one that has remained frustratingly unsolved in the years since. Reunited with his Gods and Monsters director Bill Condon, Sir Ian McKellen puts in a powerful performance as Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous creation, with ample support from Golden Globe winner Laura Linney, Roger Allam (TV’s The Thick of It), and - in a fan-pleasing cameo -Young Sherlock Holmes star Nicholas Rowe.

Movie star Vincent Chase (Adrian Grenier) is about to direct his first film, with the help of agent-turnedmovie head, Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven). Gold secures the $100 million budget from Texas billionaire Larsen McCredle (Billy Bob Thornton) and his son Travis (Haley Joel Osment). But Chase’s film soon goes overbudget and Gold realises his studio is in trouble with only its first movie... Four years on from the final episode of the award-winning HBO series, the boys are back with their own celebrity entourage in tow. Among the stars making a cameo as themselves are Jessica Alba, Liam Neeson, Piers Morgan, Pharrell Williams, Armie Hammer, Kelsey Grammer, Calvin Harris, Emily Ratajkowski, George Takei, Gary Busey and of course, the film’s producer, Mark Wahlberg.

Starring Keanu Reeves, Ignacia Allamand, Lorenza Izzo, Ana de Armas, Aaron Burns, Colleen Camp Keanu Reeves stars as a man terrorised in his own house in this tense horror-thriller. Evan Webber is happily married with two lovely kids. Everything about his life seems normal, until one day his family decide to go to the beach, though because Evan has to work, he stays at home. One rainy night, Evan finds himself alone in the house when there’s a knock at the door. He answers it and meets two young girls (Ana De Armas and Lorenza Izzo) who ask if they can come in, dry off and use his phone. But once inside, he soon comes to regret it as his life turns upside down... Hostel and Cabin Fever director Eli Roth presents this nerve-shredding horror. A remake of the cult 1977 film, Death Game, Knock Knock offers another meaty role for Keanu Reeves, who recently generated acclaim for his performance in action-thriller John Wick.

SUFFOLK BUNGALOWS

If you dream of moving to a bungalow or perhaps have one to sell, getting in touch with Suffolk Bungalows will prove to be a great place to start. Launched at the beginning of 2015, the company is devoted to the sale of bungalows throughout the region and are based in Langton Place, Bury St. Edmunds, a sister company to the well respected estate agents Mortimer & Gausden. Ian Gausden, co director of Suffolk Bungalows commented “We believe that selling a bungalow can be quite a different experience to any other type of property sale. We know that many of our Clients have been in their homes for several years and the thought of moving can be a little daunting, which is why our service is very much customer lead” Often people assume that it is mainly the retired who buy bungalows, but actually current trends indicate that this is no longer necessarily the case. Whilst many of their Clients are of retirement age, there are just as many people who simply appreciate the benefits of living life on one level. Bungalows are often situated in superb settings, have the best plots and are easier to extend or adapt – so it is easy to see why they are so popular! Suffolk Bungalows are the only agents to focus on the sale of bungalows in the whole of East Anglia and as such are fast becoming a specialist centre for anyone looking to buy in the area. Currently they have an equal number of applicants living locally to those from London, Essex and the Home Counties. So if you are looking to buy a bungalow, get in touch by calling 01284 725993 and register your requirements. If you have a bungalow that you are thinking of selling, you can call them on the same number to book a free, no obligation, valuation. As members of the National Association of Estate Agents, Suffolk Bungalows provide accurate, honest and professional advice and will always work to your preferred pace.
