EDITOR’S LETTER

WELCOME TO THE

OCTOBER ISSUE

Hello and welcome to the OCTOBER issue of the directory. Autumn has arrived, I think. It’s hard to decide what to wear each morning at the moment, is it Autumn clothes? Or still t-shirt weather? I just don’t know. What I do know is that I’m very excited for layering up and general Autumn clothes, popping the sandals away the bringing the boots back out. Although they may be looking a little tired from our long winter last year, so maybe it’s time for a new pair. Look on pages 72 and 73 where we have a range of lovely boots to take your fancy, whatever taste you have. Our tasty recipe on Page 40 is suitable for vegetarians, whilst I’m not a vegetarian, I may give this one a go, because it looks delish! With October being the month of Halloween, we have tips on how to keep the kids safe when out Trick or Treating, so have a look on pages 80 & 81.

Last month’s winner was E. Aspland from Bury, who won a YooHoo Mail Box with fun stationery items. Well Done! Last month’s answers were... Across: 7. Madeup 8. Menial 9. Woof 10. Consumed 11. Unsound 13. Ester 15. Cross 16. Enmasse 18. Mutineer 19. Tens 21. Demure 22. Snarls Down: 1. Cato 2. Selfconscious 3. Spacing 4. Amend 5. Insubstantial 6. Baseless 12. Nurtured 14. Entrust 17. So with the nights drawing in quickly, we have plenty of events advertised to keep you busy before we slip into hibernation-mode in the Winter months. See you in November!

ST NICHOLAS HOSPICE Huge well done to the Nowton Pink Ladies who battled through the rain to take part in the Girls Night Out walk for St Nicholas Hospice recently. On 21st October, Sarah will be taking part in the “I’m a CEO Get Me Out Of Here” fundraising event to raise money for our excellent hospice, following the format of the I’m A Celeb TV show. Although final details are under wraps at the moment, Sarah is preparing to eat unmentionable things, face her worst fears and push herself physically in a series of challenges. Sarah says: “St Nicholas Hospice is an amazing facility in our town and although terrified what may be in store for me on the 21st, I’m really happy to be taking part. I agreed to take part in this challenge after a friend of mine, Hannah Manning, tragically lost her battle with cancer aged just 42 earlier this year. Hannah spent her last weeks at the hospice and I wanted to do something to thank them for the care and support they showed Hannah and her family.” To help Sarah reach her fundraising target please visit https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Sarah-Stamp5 10 | OCTOBER 2016

Community Garden

PARKING

I joined several members of the Nowton Neighbourhood Residents Association (NNRA) at an action day in the Community Woodland a few weeks ago. Although there weren’t many of us there on the day, the small group managed to get a lot achieved – cutting back bushes, tidying up, litter picking and spreading wood chips to make paths. The NNRA have worked so hard to get this community project up and running and we are now in a position where we need more help! It’s not an onerous task, but if you are able to spend two hours two or three times a year lending a hand in helping to keep this community garden a space we can be proud of please, please do get in touch by emailing nowtonnra@ gmail.com.

FLY TIPPING There has been a disappointing increase in fly tipping across the Nowton Estate recently. In all cases I have been made aware of I have either attended and removed the rubbish myself or, where the items have been too big, St Edmundsbury have taken care of it. Please remember we are all working hard to make our area the best it can be and dispose of your rubbish in the proper way.

Since we have been Councillors, the single biggest issue we have been contacted about has been parking. Despite a lot of work to try and combat problems in the worst affected areas, issues seem to be escalating again locally and we have had a lot of contact recently around people parking inconsiderately, especially on pavements around the Nowton Estate. There isn’t an easy fix to this – the basic problem is that the world has changed and we have more cars than spaces. But please do be aware that parents with pushchairs and those with limited mobility struggle to get around vehicles that are parked on the pavements and try and park considerately and especially avoid dropped kerbs.

REPORTING A PROBLEM If you have an issue you need to report to Suffolk County Council, the quickest, easiest and most reliable way of reporting it is by using the reporting tool at www.suffolk.gov.uk. This is the same reporting tool that we use as councillors, and it means that the issue is logged immediately, put in the system for Officers to look at and it gives you the ability to

track progress and also see what other issues are being dealt with nearby. You can report everything from missing road markings, parking concerns, overgrown bushes and trees, pavement defects and potholes and much more and it allows you to upload photos as evidence and pinpoint the exact location.

Dear reader,

my

charity Supporting West Suffolk Hospital Registered Charity No. 1049223

Sarah uses her own experiences to urge community to support ‘Love Your Nodes’ appeal

A former breast cancer patient has backed a £25,000 fundraising campaign to buy a vital piece of equipment after seeing first-hand the difference it could make. Sarah Tarrant, a former nurse at West Suffolk Hospital, has pledged her support to My WiSH Charity’s ‘Love Your Nodes’ appeal to buy a Sentimag machine to help with the removal of lymph nodes. Now in remission, Sarah has recalled how the machine would have helped her after she was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago. Sarah said: “Removing some of my nodes actually caused me more problems than the breast cancer operation. “I know from my own experience that the Sentimag machine will allow for more minimal intervention which will help so many people and lessen the chance of post-surgery complications.” The campaign, which is run in partnership with the Bury Free Press, has already received great backing from the generous local community with the Sentimag machine giving surgeons a greater idea of what lymph nodes to remove to ensure the cancer has not spread further. In addition to fundraising, My WiSH Charity want to use the appeal to raise awareness of breast cancer. This is something that Sarah, 58, is also supporting after also using her own

experiences while working as a practice nurse at Siam Surgery in Sudbury.

Sarah Tarrant

The mother-of-two, who described her husband Martin and her two sons as her ‘rock’ explained: “With my work, and given what I have been through, I often use my own personal experiences as a tool to urge people to come forward and have a mammogram. “It is so important to catch it early as the risk of the cancer spreading is reduced, as well as the risk of needing your nodes removed. “After I read about the campaign, I knew I wanted to pledge my support. “The more we can do to minimise the complications during what is already a difficult time, the better.” The appeal has also been recently supported by a donation from St Edmundsbury Mayor Julia Wakelam. Anyone interested in finding out how they can support the campaign, should contact the fundraising team on 01284 712952 or email fundraising@wsh.nhs.uk. To donate, please visit www.justgiving.com/ loveyournodes or you can text to donate by texting NODE16 £3 or the amount you wish to give to 70070.

If you have any questions about fundraising, any of the events mentioned above or how you can help the hospital, please contact fundraising@wsh.nhs.uk or call 01284 712952 12 | OCTOBER 2016

from Nowton Neighbourhood Residents Association (NNRA) Well it’s October already, where has the year gone? In fact where have the past forty years gone? We’ve lived on the Nowton estate for over forty years and have seen many changes during thistime, some good, some not so. When we arrived the hospital was fairly new, there was a greengrocer on Hardwick shopping precinct and the footpath/cycle path along Caie Walk wasn’t there, it was just the narrow tarmac path that runs in front of the houses. Recent changes have involved both the middle and primary schools due to the change to a two tier system and the Macebearer pub is up for sale. If you have memories of the estate when you first moved here, please get in touch with us, we’d like to use them in future issues of the directory. Now to the present. There have been a few instances of fly tipping recently and not only is this unfair on residents but it’s also costly as either Havebury or the borough council are

requested to remove the mess that’s left. If you have large items that you no longer need and cannot dispose of you can contact the borough and they will collect up to five items for a fee of £32. Any additional items are charged at £3 each up to a total of 10 items. Date for your diaries - The Nowton Neighbourhood Residents Association AGM is being held on Tuesday 25th October 7.30pm at Southgate Community Centre, the speaker is Mark Cordell who is the CEO of Ourburystedmunds BID and represents and promotes businesses in Bury. He is very passionate and enthusiastic about the town and will talk about its progress , plans for the future, maintaining growth and will answer any questions you may have. We look forward to seeing you there. Ann Williamson Chairman Nowton Neighbourhood Residents Association (NNRA)

If you are planning to let your child go out trick or treating this year, please remind them of road safety… cross the road at a safe place, stay on the path, LOOK before you cross, watch out for cars reversing or parking. As Halloween tends to happen at night, this is really important as a small child dressed head to toe in black can be easily missed! It may seem fine and your perfectly confident 9 year old who manages very well to walk him/herself to school each day begs you for the freedom to go alone with friends, but are you sure they will be safe?? …excited…in a group of friends…high on sugar???? Be creative but remember with all that flammable synthetic material – don’t get too close to naked flames! Can you add any extras to the costume that will make your child more visible – a flashing wand or some glow in the dark bracelets maybe? Not everybody likes or wishes to join in. I tell my children that if there is no pumpkin, the lights are off, the chances are the home owners either don’t want to be bothered or aren’t at home! Don’t go knocking on every door – I think it’s obvious the houses who wish to participate and have prepared for the event! Not everyone is nice and kind – stick to houses that you know and never EVER go in to the home of somebody that you don’t know.

Halloween, it frightens you, you have a small child or baby who may get upset or you’ve simply forgotten – close your curtains, don’t put a pumpkin outside and turn off your outside light!

care, if you are out driving on Halloween, be more vigilant for small witches, zombies and skeletons running around – look, look again and keep your speed to a minimum.

Starring Daniel Scheinert, Daniel Kwan Daniel Radcliffe stars as a corpse in this mind-bogglingly surreal yet oddly moving shipwreck comedy. Stranded on a desert island, desperate Hank (Paul Dano) is about to hang himself when a flatulent dead body washes ashore. His new pal turns out to be a man of many uses, from improvised jet-ski to fresh water storage. He even has a special magic compass. The duo swiftly become firm friends, and the corpse revives sufficiently to introduce himself as Manny (Daniel Radcliffe). Together, they embark on a crazy epic adventure that will return Hank to the woman of his dreams. This is a ceaselessly inventive and ultimately rather touching comedy like no other, giving Daniel Radcliffe his strangest role to date. It’s the feature debut of Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan - collectively known as ‘The Daniels’ - whose hugely imaginative music video ‘Turn Down for What’ went viral.

WHAT’S ON

THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS

15

Director Colm McCarthy Starring Sennia Nanua, Gemma Arterton, Glenn Close, Paddy Considine One girl holds the key to survival in this strikingly original post-apocalyptic zombie horror. In a dystopian near future, humanity has been ravaged by a mysterious fungal disease. The afflicted are robbed of all free will and turned into flesh-eating ‘hungries’. Mankind’s only hope is a small group of hybrid children who crave human flesh but retain the ability to think and feel. The kids go to school at an army base in rural England, where they’re subjected to cruel experiments by Dr. Cauldwell (Glenn Close). Teacher Helen (Gemma Arterton) grows particularly close to an exceptional girl named Melanie (Sennia Nanua). When the base is invaded, the trio escape with guard Sergeant Parks (Paddy Considine) and embark on a perilous journey of survival, during which Melanie must come to terms with who she is.

DARE TO BE WILD PG Director Vivienne De Courcy Starring Emma Greenwell, Tom Hughes, Alex Macqueen, Janie Dee, Christine Marzano, Lorna Quinnr A globe-trotting romantic adventure based on the amazing true story of landscape designer Mary Reynolds. Young, gifted Irishwoman Mary Reynolds (Emma Greenwell) has a dream: to share the beauty of the natural world and communicate the need for its preservation. Her ambition is to enter the prestigious, hugely competitive Chelsea Flower Show, creating an unconventional wild nature garden in the heart of London. The odds are stacked against this idealistic outsider, who experiences plenty of setbacks and opposition from the snooty horticultural establishment. But her sheer force of will wins a dedicated band of supporters, known as the Green Angels. Key to her plans is reforestation specialist Christy Collard (Tom Hughes), whom she follows to Ethiopia. Romance blossoms, along with Mary’s remarkable garden. This stunningly photographed, uplifting, inspirational and swooningly romantic true-life drama offers a terrific lead role to rising star Emma Greenwell, who was recently seen in the Jane Austen adaptation ‘Love & Friendship’.

Filmed on location in the West Midlands, M.R. Carey’s adaptation of his much-acclaimed, bestselling novel puts a fresh, provocative spin on the zombie movie.

National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society public meeting Thursday 13th October at 645 pm - ‘Who cares?’ An introduction to the campaign work of NRAS to improve rheumatoid arthritis care - presented by Conn O’Neill, Policy & Public Affairs Officer. ALL WELCOME.

BINGO Eyes down on Friday 7th October starting at 7pm. Sally looks forward to seeing you for a great evening!

COACH TRIP TO LONDON

There are just a few seats left for our trip on 15th October leaving at 9 am. But hurry!

Hall Hire and Disco Equipment

The Centre has its own disco equipment which is available to hire at modest cost to make your party go with a bang!

Kids of the Castle Holiday Club 2016 What a great four days in August giving 30-35 children a time of fun, games, worship, and Bible teaching. A big thank you also to the many friends from Southgate Church who came to teach, play games, do crafts, make refreshments, and lead teams - we enjoyed being princesses for the week up front. Alison certainly deserves the “best dressed” princess award! Friday evening’s “new look” was a great success serving afternoon tea to the children and their families in a full hall. The waiters and waitresses certainly looked the part!
