+facts.CONNECT SOCIAL | Public/Shared spaces + Chance Encounters
ECONOMIC | Live, Work, Play
Within the design there exists a variety of shared and public spaces. They begin on the ground floor with the market quad. Here patrons, visitors and residents alike can purchase, sell and connect with vendors. In this market there will be vendors from local to international, all there to bring revenue and activity to the site. As visitors travel further into the design they will be met by what “.Connect” calls its CONNECTion rooms made to be used for both learning and living of the residents and invited visitors. Interchangeably these spaces can be used for the purposes of which they are named. For example, in one of room on floor 3 residents may be using it as a place to study for their next exam at any of twenty+ schools within a 5-mile radius of the residence. Of this mass of schools, the two which are assigned to this address, grades k-8, happen to be below average schools, so maybe on another floor a teacher uses one of these learning rooms to enrich students in the community. Another of the rooms can be used as an extended living room, for meetings, for creatives to come together and create, for the people of Nostrand.Connect and the rest of the neighborhood to gather and progress in collaborative ways.
.Connect aims to grow the market of the Flatbush neighborhood in tangent with its moments of human connection. As mentioned, there are shop spaces, as well as office and commercial retail spaces open to be rented out. There are opportunities for the residents to open up shops on the ground floor alongside whatever brand stores or offices decide to join the nostrand.Connect team. Past commerce, the building strives to follow an economic model through its materials, a simple yet sophisticated combination of steel, brick and cross laminated timber interior. In .Connect there are also environmental factors that allow for the building to save money and energy as there is something happening at all times of day.
ENVIRONMENTAL | Sustainable Systems
VISION of nostrand.CONNECT
DESIGN OVERVIEW
All of nostrand.Connect’s environmental agencies are visible and evident inside and out of the building. Working from the roof of the building in, there is a green roof, which offers residents connection to nature, while acting as a point for water management systems that offer grey water use to the site. Residents will also find a solar panel farm, this farm the existence of this panel farm will pair with the water management system to reduce the cost of everyday residence costs overtime. The openings in the main central space of the lower level allow for passive ventilation of the common areas on the ground floor.
At nostrand.Connect we strive to cultivate a community for all ages and cultures to come together. The design allows each of its residents and visitors the opportunity to experience an inclusive environment. On the ground floor Retail can be used by the residents above as shops in which they can grow businesses, there is opportunity for pop-up shops, local retailers and brands to come together in a central space. With the proximity of the retail to the housing above residents will not have to go far to access everything they need in their daily lives. Each level above this includes apartment units as well as CONNECTion rooms in which residents can cultivate stimulating environments that foster collaboration and growth. As the inhabitants of nostrand.Connect make their way to the roof, they will experience these rooms all the way up until they reach our shared outdoor spaces that are meant to encourage a tempering of pace, a connection to nature which offers room for bonding, reflection, and solidarity.

Facts on Solar panels: Community solar project (community net metering): With this approach, individual units can get a portion of the solar system’s production credited to their electricity bills. For example, you could install a 50 kW system on a roof and divide up the system’s production among all of the units, or those that elect to participate, with each getting proportional credit for the solar energy produced on their utility bill. Typical ROI’s are 5-8 years.
