WATERMELON pROMOTION - National Watermelon Queen Jessica Southard and Mar-Del Watermelon Queen Parris Travers were on hand to give out fresh, cool watermelon slices, along with giveaways, including recipes, at the Laurel Auction Block on Thursday, Aug. 5. According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service in 2009, Maryland and Delaware farmers together harvested 157.3 million pounds of watermelons with a farm gate value of $15.7 million from 4,600 acres. The MarDel Watermelon Association along with the Delaware and Maryland departments of Agriculture encourage consumers to buy locally-grown food and support local farmers. Delaware and Maryland have under way a promotion urging consumers to buy the MAR-DELicious brand watermelons. Delaware and the Eastern Shore of Maryland is an area filled with the history of fresh market produce, including watermelons, with the Laurel (Del.) Auction Market serving as a primary marketing point for watermelons since the 1940s. As early as 1905, melons grown on the Delmarva Peninsula were shipped by rail to markets in the cities. And that, said Laurel-area resident Norman Hastings, is simply not acceptable. Hastings is circulating a petition throughout the district, asking Gov. Jack Markell to review the sentence

People are aggravated and want to sign.” Hitch was indicted June 16 on 99 felony counts related to the embezzlement. In a statement announcing the indictment, the Attorney General’s office said that Hitch made unauthorized payments to himself over a period of eight years. He was charged with

one count of theft of $100,000 or more, 12 counts of misuse of computer system information and 86 counts of tampering with public records. Nearly all, 96, of those counts were dismissed under the terms of the plea bargain. Hitch pleaded guilty to one count of theft, one count of tampering with public records and one count of misusing a computer system. Continued on page 5
