Welcome to CHEERful Living, our quarterly magazine devoted to seniors, boomers and their families in Sussex County. Seniors and caregivers will want to read the magazine “hot off of the press” for the stories, photos and community resources it provides. CHEERful Living will be distributed quarterly and will always be free! We will be selling ads to businesses throughout the community as they show their support to the senior population and to CHEER programs.

CHEERful Living is produced in partnership with Morning Star Publications of Seaford which also publishes the Seaford and Laurel Star, Morning Star Business Report and Salisbury Star. Morning

Star Publications is owned and operated by Seaford residents Bryant and Carol Richardson.

Our inaugural issue is special to me, for it is a path in a new direction as this publication will be devoted to our loyal members and employees that make CHEER the awesome agency that we have become in our 43 years of operation. Just as the senior population of Sussex County is changing and rapidly increasing, CHEER has recognized the need to make changes in order to better serve the community. As we have built centers throughout Sussex County, we have also planned more centers with larger facilities that will allow many functions to occur at the same time.

There was a session at the National Association of Aging conference which sums up the changes perfectly, “We are not your mother’s senior center!”

Volunteerism Meals on Wheels service is not just about the food

For CHEER volunteers George and Sandra Kilian, delivering meals to homebound people through the Meals on Wheels program isn’t just about the food.

“Whatever people on our route need help doing, we try to do,” George says. “We collect mail, feed the cat, take out the trash and mail letters.”

The husband and wife also make sure that the people to whom they are delivering aren’t in need of immediate medical help. On one occasion, Sandra remembers, one of their clients was not well when they got to his house.

“He was huffing and puffing, and really did not look good,” she adds.

“George wanted to call the ambulance, but the man said that he wanted to wait a bit, to see if he got better. But we felt that he really needed help.

George called for an ambulance anyway and the man got the treatment that he needed.”

The Kilians moved to Georgetown from Pennsylvania in 2001. Not quite a year later, they heard about the Meals on Wheels from a speaker at their church.

“We were new to the area and we wanted to do something to get to know the community,” Sandra says.

“We also like to give back by helping others and we thought that Meals on Wheels sounded like a good program.

We signed up and we’ve been doing it ever since.”

George and Sandra deliver meals once a week, to more than a dozen homes in the Georgetown area. If

CHEER needs them to do another route, they will do that, too.

“We have made friends on our route,” Sandra says. “Some people don’t want to talk too much. But others like to talk. We treat them like they want to be treated.”

Sandra adds that whether people want to have long conversations or not, they are all grateful for the meals that they receive. “They are always so

thankful for the food that we bring,” she adds.

And for everyone involved, the visits bring a boost in spirits, the Kilians say. “They are happy to see us, and we are happy to be helping them,” Sandra says.

“This is a very worthwhile program,” she adds. “We will continue delivering meals as long as we can do it.”

Volunteer opportunities Since its inception in 1971, CHEER has relied on volunteers to carry out its mission of providing a variety of services to people in need.

CHEER employees and volunteers serve over 30,000 senior citizens living throughout Sussex County every year. Our volunteers provide homebound meals, transportation to and from medical appointments, companionship for those who have few friends or relatives living nearby, and assistance with the daily operations of our seven CHEER Activity Centers and the Community Center. Without the generosity of our volunteers, we would be unable to continue many of the programs and services that bring comfort and joy to those in need.

Car, Truck & Bike event plus a little Doo Wop

CHEER’s Annual Classic Car, Truck & Bike event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 14, at the CHEER Community Center located at 20520 Sand Hill Road, Georgetown.

The day will feature the display of many different vehicles, a 50/50 raffle, a live and silent auction, entertainment and food and craft vendors.

CHEER’s famous Gala Brunch will also be held. Brunch will include many favorites that please your palate. Tickets for the brunch, which are $25, can be purchased at the door.

Radio personality Bill Colley of WGMD, 92.7 FM is scheduled to do a two hour remote location broadcast from 10 a.m. to noon.

This year’s event will showcase the 50th anniversary of the car, the Mustang. There will be a designated display area for Mustangs and each Mustang will receive a 50th Anniversary ribbon to display on the car. The Silent Auction will feature items recognizing the anniversary of the Mustang such as a Mustang rocking chair and mail box. All Mustang owners are invited to participate in the celebration.

Last year’s event showcased over 50 cars including some very popular entries such as: Jaguars, Corvettes, Ferraris, Chevelles, Thunderbirds, Renaults, a very rare Hotchkiss and others. To register your car, truck or bike and receive two tickets to the Champagne Brunch, the cost is $50 (best deal). To register 8

your vehicle without Brunch tickets, the cost is $25 (still a good deal). Either way, you are going to have a great day and a chance to show off your vehicle.

The registration form is on the CHEER website at www.cheerde.com.

There will be a raffle for “Fun Rider,” CHEER’s miniature motor-

cycle which is a motorized vehicle for children ages 5 and up. Raffle tickets are $5 each and can be purchased at all CHEER centers. The item will be given away at the end of the car show event.

Sponsorships, which are tax deductible, are available. The following levels are available: Level 1 - Gold Sponsorship ($1,000) includes an event plaque, eight CHEER Brunch tickets, advertising in the event program, entry of four vehicles, a table to promote your business and an opportunity to display a business banner.

Level 2 - Silver Sponsorship ($500) includes an event plaque, four CHEER Brunch tickets, advertising in the event program, entry of two vehicles and an opportunity to display a business banner.

Level 3 - Bronze Sponsorship ($250) includes an event plaque, two CHEER Brunch tickets, advertising in the event program and the entry of one vehicle for display.

General vendors and food vendors are also invited. General vendors, showing off your products and crafts, may participate for $25. Food vendors, who must be self sustaining and portable as there are no outdoor electric connections, may participate for $100.

This event is free and open to the public. Children under the age of 10 must be accompanied by an adult.

An Evening of Doo Wop The second part of the day begins at 5 p.m. at the CHEER Community Center where you will enjoy an evening of Doo Wop. Take a trip back to yesterday’s great-

est hits with The Jersey Jukebox and The Del Angels. Cut a rug and enjoy the concession stand and get your burgers, onion rings and milkshakes along with other fun foods straight out of an episode of Happy Days.

Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 the day of the event. This will be a sell-

Be prepared for the changing ‘seasons’ of your life

May Day is a celebration of spring.

And, after a long and hard winter in many parts of the country, most of us are ready for sunshine, warmer temperatures and the hopefulness that spring always symbolizes. But as winter gives way to spring, we are also reminded that our lives have “seasons,” too — and it pays to be prepared for all of them. So, as you move into the “retirement season,” you’ll need to prepare for several possible challenges, including the following: Outliving your resources — The idea of outliving one’s financial resources is certainly not one we want to face. In fact, in a poll of people ages 44 to 75 sponsored by Allianz Life Insurance, 61% said they fear depleting their assets more than they fear dying. The best way you can overcome anxiety about running out of money is to invest and plan.

Contribute as much as you can afford to your IRA and 401(k) or other employersponsored retirement plan — and when your salary goes up over time, increase your contributions. As for the “plan” part, try to envision the type of lifestyle you want during retirement, and then estimate how much this lifestyle will cost. Once you reach retirement, you will also need to do some planning — specifically, you will need to calculate how much money you can afford to withdraw from your investments each year.

Becoming disabled — One-third of all people between the ages of 30 and 64 will become disabled at some point, according to the Health Insurance Association of America. If you became disabled, even temporarily, the loss of income could prove devastating to your financial security, and that of your family’s. To avoid this worrisome scenario, you may want to consider disability insurance. If your employer offers this coverage as an employee benefit, take it — but don’t assume it will be sufficient.

Many times, an employer-sponsored disability policy will only cover a shortterm disability and may have a long

waiting period for benefits to kick in.

Consequently you may need to purchase your own disability insurance policy to supplement your employer’s coverage.

Requiring long-term care — Unfortunately, many people eventually require some type of long-term care, whether that involves a stay in a nursing home or the assistance of a home health care aid.

This type of care is expensive, and Medicare only covers part of it. Just how costly is long-term care? The national average for home health aide services is nearly $45,000 per year, and a private room in a nursing home is nearly $84,000 per year, according to a recent survey by Genworth, a financial security company. To meet long-term care costs, you could self-insure, but

that might be prohibitively expensive.

But failing to do anything about meeting long-term care costs could result in the need for your grown children or other family members to get involved in some fashion — and that is something you no doubt wish to avoid.

Fortunately, you can find solutions.

Older adults are growing share of work force

By Patricia Villani, MPA, PhD According to a study conducted by the Urban Institute, a think tank located in Washington, D.C., older adults continue to be a growing share of the nation’s labor force. Improved health, educational gains, and declines in the need for physically demanding work have improved our employment prospects.

In 2009, 29.0 million Americans age 55 and older were working or looking for work. The vast majority of people in that age range, 27.1 million, were already employed. Between 1999 and 2009, the component of the workforce ages 55 and older increased from 12 to 19 percent, the greatest proportion since 1948 (when records began). If participation rates continue to grow at this pace, adults age 55 and older will account for 25 percent of the workforce in 2019.

The reasons many older persons today are feeling some pressure to work is that the recent recession shrank their retirement funds, and some were either forced to retire earlier than they would have liked, or the business we worked for didn’t make it through the hard times.

But finances are not the only reason we choose to work in older age.

Boredom in retirement and a wish for a purposeful activity are other significant reasons why we seek employment.

Work often provides enhanced selfesteem, pride, recognition, status, social activities, expertise, relationships and values. These factors cross all facets of life and directly affect our activities and behaviors both inside and outside of the work environment and carry over after retirement.

Many older workers wish to work part-time, and they do. The proportion

of part-time workers escalates with age. Part-time work has increased for retired workers, particularly among women. Older workers report that they prefer part-time work because of the flexible work schedule, partial pensions

in some cases, and a gradual retirement pace.

How you can protect your parents from financial danger

During your youth, it is hard to fathom ever being responsible for the care of your parents. Perhaps you took for granted that they would always be there to help you through the complexities of life.

However, more and more adults are finding themselves in the “sandwich generation,” which includes those who are not only still caring for and supporting their own children – but have begun caring for elderly parents as well.

A recent study conducted by The Pew Research Center reveals that an astounding one out of eight Americans aged 40 to 60 falls within this overwhelmed demographic. If you are juggling the double-responsibility of tending to your children while balancing the needs of your parents, the following suggestions will hopefully help you worry less as you better prepare for your parents’ future.

1. Help Keep Your Parents Mobile – If your parents are used to their independence – and do not suffer from medical limitations – encourage them to keep their driver’s license. If you are unsure whether your parents should continue driving, the Delaware Department of Motor Vehicles offers a free assessment tool to help you decide together whether it is safe to stay behind the wheel.

2. Avoid Fraud and Scams – Sadly, the elderly population is one of the most heavily-targeted groups by scam artists. Not only are the elderly at a heightened risk of healthcare fraud (e.g., unnecessary tests or examinations), but this group is also extremely susceptible to scams including: • Aggressively targeting a grieving widow or widower immediately after the spouse’s funeral - fraudulently claiming the deceased owed a debt to be paid immediately; • Soliciting money for fake charities over the phone; and/or • Investment, sweepstakes and lot-

tery scams.

Warning your parents about these possible swindles before they happen can help you all avoid the relentless, often fruitless, hassle of trying to recover your parent’s hard-earned assets after the transaction is complete.

3. Discuss Long-Term Care

Options Early – If your parents are still active and in good health, they may not be considering long-term care planning. However, the staggering costs of long-term care (i.e., $9,000 per month, per person) can deplete you parents’ life savings and quickly leave them in a crisis situa-

4. Suggest Home Safety Modifications – An unexpected fall can be catastrophic for an elderly person, requiring months of recovery. One way to decrease this risk is to suggest installing safety measures around your parents’ home designed to prevent injury. Accessible bathtubs, chair lifts or even rearranging the furniture to create a more accessible floor plan are all ways to increase safety for your parents, and may even help them stay in their home longer.

5. Become Involved in the Budget – It may be awkward – or unwelcome – at first, but inserting yourself into your parent’s monthly budgeting and billpaying process can help not only ensure they are remaining current on their obligations, but can offer you a primer in what needs done in the event your parents become unable to handle their own affairs.

CHEER Home Health provides services for independent living

CHEER Home Services has been a part of the Sussex County community since 1971. Founded as a local, private, non-profit community-based service provider, CHEER promotes healthy and active lifestyles for persons ages 55+ throughout the county.

In fulfilling its mission, CHEER provides a wide range of programs and services supporting senior citizens, caregivers and family members on a daily basis, seven days a week, 365 days a year. CHEER provides meals at seven different senior activity centers, delivers homebound meals, provides transportation and provides health, educational, recreational activities and a full-service non-medically skilled Home Services Program.

CHEER’s Home Services Program helps hundreds of Sussex County seniors continue to live safely in their own homes. Home Services staff cook meals, provide light housekeeping and companionship and provide personal care services for people right in their own homes.

Home Services programs are developed and administered under the direction of licensed nurses, and client care is provided by a trained staff of certified nursing assistants and home health aides. CHEER Home Services assists approximately 200 active clients at any

given time. For many, CHEER’s Home Services staff has become part of an extended family caring for the needs of elderly friends and neighbors, while helping caregivers and assuring family members that their loved ones are being well attended.

A licensed and bonded home services provider, CHEER has a variety of contracts with the State of Delaware to help care for many of our clients.

CHEER also serves private clients who are just looking for a little CHEER to help them in their homes.

CHEER’s Home Services team is led by a program director who is a registered nurse with a bachelor of science degree in nursing and is certified as a care manager. CHEER’s Home Services Program director brings 28 years of nursing/client care experience with an emphasis on geriatric care and insurance related medical issues and services. The program director is backed up by a dedicated staff of nurses, care coordinators, certified nursing assistants and home health aides who touch the lives of our clients daily in their homes.

All CHEER Home Services staff participate in regular and ongoing training programs to keep their skills honed to providing the best possible client care. Each one undergoes an extensive background review and orientation prior to meeting their first

member of our CHEER client family.

CHEER takes pride in providing whatever service a client needs - be it assistance with a bath, light housekeeping, companion care, respite care, meal preparation or light grocery shopping including picking up prescriptions from the pharmacy. When more than housekeeping is involved, a registered nurse is scheduled to visit the client in their home to assess their needs and perform a complete nursing and needs assessment. This is followed by communication with the care coordinators regarding the client’s specific needs, special requests and preferred hours of service. This information is used to match a specific home health aide to the client to assure that the match will be successful and that the client will have a positive experience with CHEER Services. Our caregivers are not only dedicated to satisfactorily providing the duties on a care plan, they also provide caring and compassion in a way that each of us would want for ourselves and our family members.

Maybe only a few hours once or twice a week is all that is needed to help insure a comfortable and orderly home. Maybe some help with meals, getting up in the morning or being tucked into bed at night gives you peace of mind know-

On Thursday April 24, in honor of Earth Day, ten volunteers from the CHEER Coastal Leisure Center went to the Indian River Lifesaving Station to access the Oceanside beach for a trash pickup. Make every minute count with dementia patients

Dementia, in its many forms, is the disease that keeps on taking. For those who suffer from dementia each day brings a loss of another precious memory. For those who care for an individual with dementia, each day brings the realization that another part of the person you care for is gone forever. There is no reversing the process and you can never recover the lost moment. You can’t even discuss the feelings because by the time the memory loss occurs, the ability to reason or even understand is gone.

As difficult as this is for those left behind, there is one opportunity for you, the caregiver, and the person you care for. Live in the moment and make every one of them as special as you can. The person you care about may not remember your kindness 10 minutes from now, but in that moment, they will know happiness, they will smile and feel good and you can remember for the both of you. That’s the best you can hope for and you need to treasure each of those moments because as time goes on, they become fewer and fewer.

CHEER’s Sand Hill Adult Day program is all about those happy moments.

The program seeks to offer as many opportunities in as many forms as possible for the person you care about to experience happiness. Each day the dedicated Sand Hill Adult Day Program staff battles the memory thief and creates those moments for joy out of the fog of dementia. They bring moments of happiness to people who will not remember them by the time lunch is served, but who will smile in the moment and have a good day. Each day, participants in the Sand Hill Adult Day program play games, draw pictures,

build puzzles, exercise and have fun.

They will not be able to tell you what they did that day, but they do know they had fun and they had a good day.

For the day they spent in the Sand Hill Adult Day program they were safe and they had fun. For a person suffering from dementia and for the families that care for them, that is the very best that can be done.

Care giving for someone with dementia places a burden on the caregiver and family, no matter how much the person means to you. The constant attention and need to protect and interact is an unending demand. Having a resource like the Sand Hill Adult Day Program provides opportunities for your loved one to experience a different environment and activities with people who are trained to serve people with dementia and who genuinely care about them.

They create happiness and make a difference. Their goal is to insure that each day care participant finds fulfillment in each moment they spend in the program whether the person comes one day a week or every day. Each moment is important to each participant and member of the staff. For the caregiver, each moment their friend or family member spends in the Sand Hill Adult Day program is a moment when the caregiver can relax, knowing that the person they care for is being well cared for, stimulated and also having a good day.

While it is true that you cannot reverse the effects of dementia, with physical exercise and mental stimulation you can slow the progression of the disease. With CHEER’s Sand Hill Adult Day Program we create those happy moments for our participants and their caregivers.

Support the Milton CHEER Center Capital Campaign

The Town of Milton finds a way to be both modern and idyllically nostalgic with the charm of a Norman Rockwell painting.

Settled in 1672 at the head of the Broadkill River by English colonists, Milton was named after the English poet John Milton in 1807. In Milton you will find historic homes and buildings, a downtown shopping area and a riverside park where concerts and festivals are held. The town is also soon to be the home of the Milton CHEER Activity Center, Milton’s first dedicated senior center.

The 6,200 square foot facility will include a banquet hall for up to 125 people, a Fit-‘N’-Fun exercise area and meeting rooms, which will be of great importance to both CHEER members and the Milton community.

A commercial kitchen, banquet hall and meeting rooms will be available to the community during regular business hours as well as after hours and on weekends.

The Center, which should be complete in 2015, will be a hub of activity for the area 50+ population. Planned activities include yoga, exercise groups, card clubs, educational activities and more, as well as time to enjoy socializing with others. The CHEER Nutrition program prepares mid-day meals that are served at the Center and meals that are delivered to homebound seniors who are unable to leave their homes or prepare a meal themselves.

The Center will help fulfill the Baby Boomer’s desire to contribute to society through volunteerism, teaching and facilitating important health promoting social services.

CHEER is raising money for the Milton CHEER Activity Center, Milton’s first dedicated senior center.

Donations, both large and small, have been received from supporters in the Milton, Lincoln and Ellendale communities. A grant from The Longwood Foundation is funding the commercial kitchen and a grant from The Delaware Community Foundation is funding the Center director’s office. We are grateful for these grants but we still have a long

way to go.

Rural public transportation is a lifeline for many seniors

Bock Deputy Director Today, at this very moment, tens of thousands of Sussex Countians are deprived of: employment options, health care, education, cultural and social activities and a better life for themselves and their families. All of these opportunities are lost for one reason - a lack of effective transportation.

The things that many of us think represent the best of Sussex County are denied to an ever increasing percentage of our friends and neighbors because they simply do not have access. Without a car, or the ability to drive, many people simply cannot get to the grocery store for a loaf of bread or a quart of milk. While you think about that consider this - there is no good reason why so many people in Sussex County have to be cut off from opportunities for a better life. For too many in our community, they are cut off from life sustaining goods and services. Today, this very moment, there are people that face serious threats to their health and well-being that could all be avoided if they could just get a ride once and a while to get a job, visit a health clinic, go to school or stay in contact with their community. Instead, they sit home, isolated, with deteriorating health and quality of life.

Rural public transportation became a recognized industry in this country during the 1970s. Non-profit and faith based community service organiza-

tions recognized the need for mobility for rural residents and began operating vans and buses we have all seen running around. During the last 45 years or so, many U.S. communities have learned a lot. They have learned that providing their residents with occasional bus trips to local grocery stores and health clinics is more cost effective than providing ambulance trips for those same individuals several times a year. They have also learned that if

people can have access to education, training and employment they can create better lives for themselves and their families. And, they have learned that effective community transportation saves money and improves quality of life for the entire community. Today, there are hundreds of successful transportation programs providing millions of rides each day that enrich the lives of rural residents.

portation has had to go through a learning process that has had its successes and failures. Traditional public transportation approaches that serve urban dwellers well have often been less successful in rural areas. Rural transportation providers have had to become innovators experimenting to find the right mix for their communities and the people they serve.

In many cases, that right mix has involved a network of community based service providers working together to utilize existing resources to provide better service.

Senior centers, sheltered employment workshops, health clinics, schools and private transportation companies have formed associations to bring the best of what each have to offer to provide a mobility network that serves their communities. Coordinated mobility networks, or mobility management programs, offer more travel opportunities to more people by making better use of resources which are often already available in the communities. Sometimes that involves a paid professional driver operating a wheelchair accessible bus or van, sometimes it involves a volunteer offering an hour or two a week and sometimes it’s an employer or medical facility sponsoring a bus or a van for a specific trip or route. It’s always about making the most of the resources available in the community. In the end it’s about helping to make sure that each of us has that opportunity to participate in all of the opportunities our community has to offer. After all, isn’t that what each of us wants and deserves?

Today, we need to learn the lessons of the rural transportation industry, find ways to maximize the use of all community mobility resources and insure that all Sussex Countians have access to the opportunities to a lifestyle we all want.

In the past, CHEER has been nationally recognized for its efforts to develop a pilot program to coordinate community based transportation providers and increase mobility. Today, it’s time for community based service providers to band together and revitalize those efforts to preserve mobility for all Sussex residents.

Join the Intentional Eating Movement, eat consciously

By Tracey Fennemore One day, while waiting for a red light, I watched as every car that passed had a driver who was either eating or talking on their phones while behind the wheel! Our culture encourages multi-tasking; the more items on your to-do list, the better! When it comes to eating, however, this is not a good habit.

A new movement of conscious eating is under way. Staying aware of what we are eating, while listening to our bodies’ cues for hunger and fullness are natural ways of attaining a healthy weight. Some other terms for this new way of eating are intentional eating or intuitive eating.

The premise is that our bodies have internal regulators, telling us when to eat and when to stop, called hunger and fullness. The benefits to eating consciously include healthy weight, better glucose control, less frequent heartburn and indigestion. It takes your brain 15-20 minutes to sense that your body is full. Chewing thoroughly will help with digestion and focus your attention on enjoying foods, rather than just eating on “auto-pilot.”

Here are some tips for you to start (from RD411.com).

• Keep track of everything you eat and drink. Write it down as soon as you swallow so you don’t forget!

Include the type of food or beverage, amount, time, physical feeling of hunger vs. fullness. There are also great smart phone apps or online options available to do this, such as www. myfitnesspal.com.

• Base meals around vegetables and whole grain foods, incorporating them into main dishes. Try eating one meatless lunch or dinner each week to reduce the saturated fat, increase fiber, and introduce your taste buds to new 26

flavors. Substitute whole grain versions of bread, cereal, rice or pasta in your menus.

• Buy plenty of fresh produce to keep on hand. Wash and chop them (if applicable) and keep them front and center in the fridge, or in a basket on the counter, easily grabbed when hunger strikes.

• Eat throughout the day rather than just 3 large meals. Smaller, more frequent meals (every 3-4 hours) will help keep your energy level more consistent.

• Keep “junk food” and ‘trigger” foods out of the house. Know your weakness foods and avoid having them available to munch.

• Include good sources of protein with your meals: chicken, fish, shellfish, legumes, eggs, dairy products, soy products and lean meats.

Workouts to help reduce joint pain

By Rich Taylor, PR Specialist Just because your joints ache, does not mean you cannot exercise. The reality is that you should. By exercising, you help build strength and flexibility, reduce discomfort and, maybe, help prevent more joint damage.

Because you are stiff and ache, it may be easier to talk about exercising than actually doing it, however, you should start.

You will feel much better after only a week or two.

Start off slowly; 10 or 15 minutes each day. The exercises will help improve your joint stability and the side effects are that you may actually slim down a little. All of this helps to give you a better overall feeling and confidence. As with any exercise program, always check with your doctor or health care provider to be sure that it is safe for you to do these exercises.

Weight lifting is really good for you.

No, not the Olympic style heavy weights, but some that are within your range.

Generally, starting with light weights, maybe two to eight pounds, is good. You can always add weights as you get stronger. Try these: • Shoulder Raise increases flexibility and strength in arms, shoulders and upper body joints.

• Stand or sit with a light dumbbell in each hand, arms straight at your sides, back straight and belly pulled in. Keeping your arms straight, slowly lift weights out to sides at chest-level and hold for three seconds. Slowly lower your arms to the starting position. Do this eight to 12 times.

Stop if it becomes painful.

• Hammer Curls increase flexibility and strength to arms, wrists and hands.

• Stand or sit with a heavier dumbbell in each hand and arms straight at sides, keeping back straight and belly pulled in.

Holding weights at your sides like a hammer (thumbs up), slowly curl one arm to chin height, lower it and then curl the

other. Do this 12 to 15 times. If feels too easy, use heavier weights.

• Use your own body weight to build strength. Just increase the number of reps as you get stronger.

• Standing Toe Raises increase strength in legs, hips and lower leg joints.

• Stand facing a high-backed chair and lightly rest fingertips on the top. Place your feet hip-width apart with toes pointed slightly outward. Lift heels up, balance on the balls of the feet for five counts. Slowly lower heels to the floor. Repeat eight to 15 times or until your legs begin to feel fatigued.

• Standing Hip Abductions strengthens outer hips and thigh muscles and lubricates hip joints.

• Place a sturdy, high-backed chair about 12 inches from your right side.

Grasp top of the chair with your right hand. Stand with feet hip-width apart, knees bent and belly firm. Carefully lift right leg to the side and six inches off the ground, keeping it straight. Point toes slightly and hold leg up for three seconds.

Slowly lower to floor. Repeat eight to 12 times. Rest briefly and switch sides. Try to not tilt to one side or the other.

• The Elbow Plank strengthens hips, back, belly and upper body.

• Lay face-down with elbows and knees on the floor. Put a mat or towel beneath you to cushion the pressure. Clasp hands on the floor, positioning them under your face with elbows under your shoulders.

Tuck chin slight into chest. Contract abdominals and slowly use core muscles to lift right knee off the floor so you’re held up by your elbows and toes. Repeat with left knee. Breathe deeply for 30 seconds.

Work up to one minute.

For best results, alternate strength workouts with cardio exercise. Start with 10 to 15 minutes each day. The best aerobic exercises for those with joint pain are pool workouts, treadmill walks and stationarybike rides. Avoid sports that require or

involve sudden starts and stops.

Don’t go all-out at the beginning. You may do more harm than good. Joint pain is specific to one or more areas of your body (elbows ache, but your shoulders are fine).

If a particular exercise is acutely painful, don’t do it this time. Move on to the next one.

Sudden pain in the joints is a clear sign of over-training. If you have obvious joint inflammation in one area, take it easy on that area for a day or two.

Again, consult with your doctor or health care provider before beginning any exercise regimen.

Today can be the first day that you feel more confident and better about yourself.

Front and Center: Ocean View

Last charter members recall decades of memories

By Carol Kinsley The last two remaining charter members of the Coastal Leisure Senior Center sat together in the director’s office recently, recalling more than two decades of membership activities. The center started in August 1992 as Ocean View Leisure Senior Center, meeting that first year at the Church of Christ.

“We met two days a week,” recalled Marian Santo, age 85. “There were 15 of us. We’d meet at 8:30 in the morning and draw or paint. There was one big table and we’d say, ‘Save me a seat.’

We’d walk the dirt path outside. It was just a big circle, but there were only a few houses. That was our ‘fitness center.’ We’d put on music and line dance.

At 12:30, we went home. There was no lunch back then.”

Lorraine Carr, who just turned 92, met Santo at the church and they became good friends. Each had a daughter, then 6 or 7-years-old, attending the same Sunday school camp. “They’re now both in their 60s,” Carr said.

Karen Corridor was the first director, from the time the group met at the church. “Karen was like a big kid,” Santo said. “She’d ride with us on the bus.”

In the beginning, Santo picked up riders in her big car. Then bus service was provided on a limited basis.

“The unwritten rule was that members couldn’t make plans for Thursdays.

They had to be there on Thursday (when the bus came) or we’d lose it!”

Carr said. “It was an old brown bus, and we could only have it if we filled it that day.”

The bus would pick up members at their homes if they lived within 10 miles. A bus is available today for more frequent trips: On Mondays they go 28

for local shopping, banking and library visits, a service helpful to seniors who no longer drive. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, the bus brings members to the center for cards and bingo, respectively.

The ladies particularly remember their “happy bus driver” from the past days, Edward Cline.

Thursdays is still a day for special trips, such as a recent visit to the beach for a clean-up activity, another to an art gallery and a trip to Prince George’s Chapel in Dagsboro. An especially nice trip took them to Baywood Gardens for a tulip tour. Two years ago a kayaking trip included four members in their 80s — for whom it was their first kayaking experience.

“Our first trip was to learn life-saving,” Carr said. “We went out into the

water. That was when I was younger.”

“You can’t put her down,” Santo chimed in.

“This is how I stay active and engaged,” Carr replied. “Some say I have ‘too many interests.’ I’ve been in an RSVP knitting group for 16 to 17 years and a member of the Millville Fire Department Auxiliary for 20 years. I belong to two senior centers and church.

And I have friends.”

Santo is busy also, belonging to two groups of Red Hats, three senior centers, and church. She’s also busy with her camera. She shared two albums of photos she had taken at senior center gatherings through the years.

The name of the center was changed to Coastal Leisure Senior Center when folks from Bethany Beach were added.

The Coastal Center is one of the most

active of the CHEER centers in Sussex County.

Within a few months of the center’s organization, Santo recalled, the group moved into town hall and remained there for five years as their numbers grew.

They had no cafeteria, but “we brought goodies,” Carr said, recalling one lady who brought crab imperial for the once-a-month covered dish luncheon.

“There was rarely any left over,” she added.

The next move was to the old Kwik Chek Restaurant. Gerald Hocker let the group use the building from 1998 to 2005. “But the roof leaked,” Santo said.

Buckets were used to catch the rain.

There also was no heat.

“When we moved from one place to another, I thought that was the end,” Santo said. “One day a lady drove her car through the restaurant window, but they fixed it.”

Through the years the seniors had fund drives, such as making wreaths at Christmas. A capital campaign for the new building was aided by grants, donations from foundations and some support from the state. Membership dues are now collected. “We never paid membership fees until we moved into this building,” Carr said. “We were living ‘high on the hog’ in donated space.”

A new building at 30637 Cedar Neck Road in Ocean View was begun in 2005.

In March the incomplete building blew over, but construction resumed.

With the fundraising, dues and the generosity of donors, the center was completely paid for in November 2013.

“We have no debt,” Carr said.

There were many members at the groundbreaking for the new center who never got to see the building finished.

“Most all are gone now,” Santo said.

“It’s sad that the other charter members were not there. I didn’t think we’d ever see it complete.”

Each leisure center has its own “home” membership, but members can go to any facility. Coastal Leisure Senior Center has 500 members on the rolls, but they are never all present at the same time.

There’s no rule that a member has to live in Sussex County. Some are parttime Delaware residents. Carr still lives in Millville, although her 911 address puts her in Ocean View. Santo lives in Milton now. “It’s quite a drive,” she said.

“I go the back roads.”

Both answered that their favorite thing about the CHEER center was “being with people.” Carr added, “Whatever the rest plan to do, we all do together: bingo, dominoes, canasta... We visit Trap Pond

for a picnic in September. All the senior centers in the county go. We hike with a naturalist, visit vendors, eat fried chicken and free ice cream.”

Carr continued, “If you’re bored, it’s your own fault.”

Santo said, “With my grandmother, everything was at church. Our friendships draw us here and keep us going.”

Yolanda Gallago, the current director, said, “Folks tell me to stop planning so much. ‘We’re too busy,’ they say. But you have to make choices.”

The ladies fondly remember previous directors such as Sheree Stephens, but they said in unison, “We’ve never had one like Yolanda!”
