Board of Education welcomes Markell By Cathy Shufelt
The Delmar Board of Education was pleased to welcome Delaware Governor Jack Markell, Delaware Secretary of Education Dr. Lillian Lowery, representatives from the Delaware State Education Association, and community representatives for the governor’s “Conversations” series. During a presentation entitled, “Conversations on: Stronger Schools Moving Delaware Forward Together,” the governor outlined the state’s plan to spend the approximately $119 million of federal Race To The Top (RTTT) funding the state has been awarded. Markell and friends are traveling to 10 schools throughout the state speaking with local residents, parents, teachers, students, and administrators about how the state intends to spend the federal monies. Forty school districts throughout the country applied for the first round of federal RTTT funding with Delaware and Tennessee receiving the highest rankings out of that round of applications. RTTT funding is being provided by the federal government to school districts that are “leading the way with ambitious yet achievable plans for implementing coherent, compelling, and comprehensive education reform… winners will help trail-blaze effective reforms and provide examples for states and local school districts throughout the country to follow.” The RTTT funds are part of the federal government’s latest plan to reform education in the United States. The federal government expects to spend over $3.5 billion overall on the program. States are asked to send in proposals that advance reforms around four specific areas: 1) adopt standards Continued on page 3
