District residents become enraged following announcement of vote By Mike McClure The Laurel School Board voted, 3-2, against renewing the contract of superintendent Dr. John McCoy during last Wednesday’s meeting. Following the vote, members of the public voiced their displeasure with the board members who voted against McCoy. Following the first of two executive sessions, the meeting began with a public participation session. Four members of the community urged the board to keep McCoy. “It (referendum) was passed under Dr. McCoy’s watch. He’s been involved in the community. This stability has helped the district,” said Dr. Joanne Czernik, who said she was

against the referendum. Christy Collins Butterworth presented the Board with 30 more names on a petition in support of McCoy. The board was presented with similar petitions at previous meetings. Chad Miller questioned why there was no public participation session scheduled at the end of the meeting (like there is at most meetings). “How is the public supposed to discuss anything that happened during the meeting? If the board wants parental involvement then let us comment on the decisions that have been made during the meeting.” Following the second executive session, which lasted more

than an hour, the board voted to add a second public comment session following the vote. The Board voted to approve the contracts of Sandy Baker, Gail Fowler, Cristy Greaves, Megan Mitchell, Judy Noll, Monet Smith, Leroy Travers and Dean Ivory. Board members Brent Nichols and Harvey Hyland voted to approve McCoy’s new contract while Calvin Musser, Dot Hickman, and Lois Hartstein voted against it. The crowd, which was made up mostly of McCoy’s supporters, reacted violently to the result of the vote. Eventually, the members of the public Continued on page 12
