There appears to be no let up in the annexation flurry that has hit the town of Laurel over the past several months. During the Monday, June 4, meeting of the Laurel Town Council, nine more properties were given preliminary approval for annexation. The thrust of this new growth is being led by the owners of Shady Acres Mobile Home Park, who are planning to abandon the park in lieu of a new single-family residential complex that will replace mobile homes with townhouses. Last year, developers representing Southern Delaware Property, the owners of Shady Acres, presented plans to develop the new residential complex. The owners indicated that they would be willing to pay for the expansion of utility lines out to the

project and also cover impact and connection fees of any property owners in that area who wished to come online. This resulted in requests for annexation of seven properties in addition to the Shady Acres property. This expansion would involve running utility lines across US 13, a prospect that has long created concern among town officials due to its high cost. The officials see these annexations as a win-win for the town and the developers, as well as for those properties who will be gaining municipal utility services in the future. In addition to Shady Acres, the properties are: O’Neal Antiques, the Neal property, the Mills property (Top City), Calio Plaza, the Nanticoke Memorial Hospital property, Poore’s Propane, and the Don Continued on page 4
