St. John is one of the smaller U.S. Virgin Islands and conservation center of the territory. It is best known for its pristine beaches and the attractions within the Virgin Islands National Park, which occupies more than half the island. The lands in the Virgin Islands National Park shelter migrant birds and the mangroves support corals and anemones. As with all the Virgin islands, you will find that St. John provides a rich mix of our culture and history.

St. Thomas is our business and shopping center and the seat of government. Charlotte Amalie is the capital town of the U.S. Virgin Islands and is one of the busiest ports of call for cruise ships in the Caribbean. Water Island is the smallest of the U.S. Virgin Islands and rests just off the coast of St. Thomas. It is mostly residential but offers fun attractions like Honeymoon Beach and quaint accommodations. The island can be reached by ferry from the Crown Bay Marina or by other vessels.

House of Rajah shines brightly on golden anniversary

Like gemstones, life is multifaceted. It shines brightly and is truly precious. But inclusions come in the form of many types of challenges, especially when spanning a half century.

But Gobind “George” Chugani says life’s most challenging times make us stronger and more grateful and even adds a special luster to life over the years. And as the popular local jeweler and his family celebrate 50 years in business on St. Thomas, he is in a place of thoughtful reflection these days.

“House of Rajah is one of the oldest family businesses in the Virgin Islands. We have survived economic slumps, multiple major hurricanes and now the COVID pandemic, and here we are at 50!”

The Chugani family’s United States legacy began when his parents migrated from India. “An American friend of my father’s offered to sponsor my parents to the U.S. in 1965. They had just gotten married. He advised them to open a business and join volunteer clubs to build up a reputable customer base in America. My parents eventually moved to Louisville, KY, where I was born,” shares Gobind “George.”

Their journey took them through Hong Kong and then to St. Thomas in 1973. “My father, Victor, was very familiar with the duty-free business as it was a very similar system in Hong Kong. He decided to take advantage of his knowledge and establish House of Rajah Jewelers in downtown Charlotte Amalie. Back in the ‘70s, cruise ships used to carry 200-400 guests. I also remember there were minimal street lights back then. It was a very simple and different world back then.”

Gobind “George,” who is the face of House of Rajah these days, bears a resemblance to actor George

Clooney. But the jeweler’s nickname came from his godfather. “Everywhere I go people do doubletakes and think I’m Clooney - from customers to random people stopping me on the streets to take a picture. It’s definitely been a huge compliment. It’s fun, but there’s only one GC. I am the one and only Gobind ‘George’ Chugani.”

The jewelry store is just steps off Main Street on Raadet’s Gade. “We have one store and we have been in that same location for 50 years. We take pride that we have been here for a half century. That says a lot about House of Rajah Jewelers and our team. I really have to say we have built up a network of resources with jewelers around the world who have worked with us throughout the years with the best quality and prices. We then pass those savings to our customers so we can give them the best price possible. We listen to our clients’ needs and wants so we can make that perfect piece of jewelry they have always envisioned and dreamed of. We also sell high-end designer pieces at a much more reasonable price. That’s become our niche.”

As a jeweler, Gobind “George” keeps up with the current trends and continues to bring in the finest pieces of jewelry from different parts of the world, especially what’s new in the market. “I find that we definitely have to evolve as a jeweler each year to keep up with styles and trends, which sets us apart.”

As they are for many Caribbean jewelers, repeat customer are the setting upon which his business is mounted. “We make sure we give every client that comes through our door the personal attention they need. Most of our clients become friends and family when they leave. And we pride ourselves as ‘The Best After Sales Customer Service.’

Celebrating almost 50 years in business, Gobind “George” Chugani and his wife KC are continuing the House of Rajah legacy.

For Gobind “George,” the shining diamond in his life is his lovely wife of 29 years, KC. “We met each other as she was passing through St. Thomas on a family vacation for a long weekend. Our paths crossed by chance, and we instantly connected. We continued our long-distance relationship till I grew the nerve to ask her to be my wife. We planned a beautiful Caribbean wedding in St. Thomas. We immediately worked together to start designing pieces together and with her vision and artistic talents, we developed a collection of long and short necklaces and bracelets with and without gems that women can stack and be creative with their pieces. We are blessed with two beautiful children Ashwin and Alisha.”

The jeweler’s appeal goes beyond his jewelry cases. He also loves to sell the USVI, donning an engaging concierge persona to tell customers about the best island experiences. “I love St. Thomas, and this is my home. I’ve lived here for five decades and it has made me embrace all the aspects of the island. From the beautiful tropical beaches to the specialty restaurants and wine bars, St. Thomas and St. John have something to offer for everyone. There are many boat excursions to choose from - snorkeling, parasailing, scuba diving and jet skiing. The pristine blue ocean is our backyard and I love it. The beauty of this island is that you get to know everyone personally.”

1. Brewer’s Bay

You will find it just past the Univeristy of the Virgin Islands going west on Route 30. Brewer’s Bay is a local family favorite for weekend picnics and gatherings. Visitors can relax in the shallow waters or sunbathe on the wide shore. On weekends there tends to be a lot of activity and loud local music! (#1 on map)

2. coki Beach

Located on Coki Point right before Coral World Ocean Park, this white sand beach with crystal clear water offers excellent snorkeling and diving. Beachside restaurants serve picnic fare including burgers, sandwiches and some local dishes. There

is a dive shop, jet ski rental and several vendors renting snorkel gear, beach chairs and floats. (#2 on map)

3. hull Bay

A favorite northside beach for local families and surfers. It offers the best surfing on St. Thomas when there is a north swell but the locals are very protective so be aware. Hull Bay Hideaway restaurant and bar is located just behind the beach. Located on the northside. Plenty of parking. (#3 on map)

4. lindBergh Bay

Named after the famous aviator who landed nearby in 1928, this tranquil bay is flanked by three hotels, palm trees and sea grapes that line the shore. Located on the airport road. (#4 on map)

5. smith Bay park

Formerly known as Lindquist Beach, Smith Bay Park on the east end of the island is one of St. Thomas’ most virginal and pristine beaches. The water is crystal clear and typically calm. The left side of the beach is great for snorkeling. Owned by the Virgin Islands government, it is wellmaintained and kept clean. There are a few picnic tables but get there early! (#5 on the map)

6. magens Bay

This beautiful one-mile stretch of beach is St. Thomas’ favorite and famous beach and is a public park. The water is usually very calm in this protected bay. Beach chairs and floats are available for rent and burgers, pizzas and other snacks can be found at the snack bar. Picnic tables located all along the beach. Lifeguards are on duty. (#6 on map)

7. sapphire Beach

The sapphire-blue waters here are great for snorkeling, windsurfing, jet skiing and more. The beach is located on the east end at Sapphire Beach Resort. (#7 on map)

8. secret harBour Beach

A calm, quiet beach located at Secret Harbour Beach Resort, this beach has a floating swim platform and beach chairs available for rent. There is a dive company right on the beach. Also a restaurant and bar. (#8 on map)

9. Bolongo Bay

Bolongo Bay is located on the southern coast. Known for its coral reef that prevents heavy boat traffic, Bolongo is a favorite for snorkeling. Enjoy the calm waters, 1,000-foot golden sand beach, over 100 coconut trees rustling in the breeze and local iguanas strolling past. You can wine and dine at Iggies’ Oasis Restaurant & Poolbar or book a sailing excursion on Heavenly Days. (#9 on map)

10. vessup Beach

A local favorite on the weekends for parties with loud music. Good time to go is during the week when it is very empty and peaceful. There is a watersports hut there that rents out sailboats, SUPs (Stand Up Paddle Boards), windsurfers and other fun water toys. The long stretch of beach is great for taking a leisurely stroll and the water is nice for swimming.

11. dorothea Beach

This is a very natural beach...no amenities, bars or restaurants. The Dorothea condominiums are located there in the flat area behind the beach. Being a northside beach, it can be rough during the winter with some big swells and currents that can push you towards the rocks. There is some great snorkeling there.

Each U.S. resident, including children, can take home $1,600 worth of duty-free goods bought in the U.S. Virgin Islands. When returning to the U.S. mainland you will be required to fill out a separate customs form for these items. You may be asked to show your receipts, so it is important to keep a good record of what you buy. This duty-free allowance is double the $800 limit from other islands. You may also take 5 cartons of cigarettes and 5 liters of liquor back as long as one of the bottles is a product made in the Virgin Islands.

Right on the West Indian Company cruise ship dock, Havensight Shopping Mall is a convenient, less crowded way to go shopping for the duty-free purchases that you may be looking for. All of the major retailers have well-stocked stores with pretty much the same merchandise and prices as downtown. Each individual must complete the CBP declaration Form 6059B. St. Thomas Carnival 2023 Celebrates Food, Culture and Revelry

Spring means St. Thomas Carnival shines the light on the island’s beautiful and colorful culture. This year’s theme – “Illuminating our Culture for the World to See, St. Thomas Carnival 2023” –reflects the pride and joy carnival presenters have in their heritage and celebrations.

St. Thomas is home to one of the Caribbean’s most alluring harbors, pristine beaches, historic forts and houses, top notch hotels, vibrant music scene and delicious food. And that all provides a perfect backdrop for the island’s 71st Carnival celebration.

USVI Commissioner of Tourism Joseph Boschulte said, “Carnival season on St. Thomas is such a wonderful time of year. It allows us to showcase our culture, including our music, delicious food, history, design and creativity. It dovetails perfectly with our tourism marketing campaign, ‘naturally in rhythm’ that highlights our authentic Caribbean experiences and culture.”

Carnival begins with the Prince, Princess and Jr. Miss contests on April 8, followed by the Carnival Queen showcase on April 15. Other highlights of the festivities include J’ouvert, the official and spiritual start of Carnival with an early dawn party on the waterfront; the annual Children’s and Adult Parades along Main Street; the Food Fair with local food, arts and crafts and live music; the Panorama with six live steel pan groups performing musical calypso; and Village Nights, six nights of free local and international performances with 30-plus vendors selling food and drinks along with a family-friendly village.

“We’ve put together a spectacular series of events to showcase the rich culture, tradition and spirit of Carnival,” said Ian Turnbull, Director of the Division of Festivals. “We are grateful to our team of volunteers, sponsors and the people of the Virgin Islands. We look forward to an even greater Carnival this year.”

Reigning over Carnival Village will be Kelly “Pupa Kelly” Charleswell, in his Musical Arena on April 24. Kelly studied classical trombone at the University of the Virgin Islands, but the guitar is his first love. He played with the Puerto Rico Symphony, Eartha Kitt, Milo’s Kings, Eddie & the Movements and other iconic bands. He’s best known for singing and playing guitar with the Awesome Jam Band and teaching music at Joseph Gomez Elementary School.

“Knights Delight” Food Fair will honor baker extraordinaire Goldine Burton-Knight. Together with her husband, she started Heritage Bakery & Deli, which has since become ERK Corporation.

The Grand Marshals for the Parades are Georgia Francis for the Children’s Parade, a veteran in the music education, and James Lewis for the Adults Parade, a longtime Carnival reveler and local fan favorite.

Carnival in Paradise, the mantra for this year’s festivities, will be filled with food, music, culture, reveling and fun with spectacular fireworks to close out the festivities.

Francis Bay is one of St. John’s longest beaches. Long white sand beach with calm, clear water protected from the easterly winds. The Francis Bay Trail runs along a salt pond and offers great bird watching. There is good snorkeling for beginners on the west end, towards Maho Bay. For experienced snorkelers go to the rocky section at the other end of the beach.

Trunk Bay

The most popular beach on St. John is undoubtedly Trunk Bay. It is known for its 650 feet of underwater snorkeling trail that includes identification signs on the bottom of the sea, describing the coral formations and fish that inhabit the waters. It’s educational and a fun way to spend the day. The beach is part of the National Park and it is the only beach with an admission fee ($5).

Hawksnes T

One of St. John’s most convenient beaches, Hawksnest Beach offers picnic tables and barbecue grills. There is also plenty of parking. A great snorkeling reef starts close to shore.

3. Cinnamon Bay

One of the longest beaches in St. John’s National Park is Cinnamon Bay, it is about a mile long. There is good snorkeling to the right side of the beach, if you don’t mind the swim. Or check out the nature trail across from the campground that

winds through plantation ruins and a wild cinnamon forest of bay rum trees.

Another favorite with the locals because it is accessible only by trail, either from Caneel Bay or along the Lind Point Trail out of Cruz Bay (about a mile walk, not challenging) and thus is mostly deserted. A perfect place for a relaxing day on the beach.

Honeymoon Beach is a pretty beach with sandy shoreline surrounded by sea grape and coconut trees. Hike the Lind Point Trail or shuttle from Caneel Bay. Rent a private cabana! Tacos & pizza for lunch and lobster and live music for dinner.

Caneel Bay Beach can be hiked to from Cruz Bay along the Lind Point Trail. It is the ultimate white sand beach. The water is usually very calm and shallow, perfect for a day of swimming and sunning. This

Maho Bay is great for children. The water is shallow and protected. Look carefully in the sand while snorkeling; you might see a stingray, just look for the outline in the sand.

This is the beach of the Westin Resort. So it is well kept and lined with beautiful palm trees. Great Cruz Bay is a great beach for kids and families. The water is calm with a mostly sandy bottom with some seagrass patches. Beach chairs, umbrellas and watersports rentals are available.

This deserted beach at the Caneel Bay Resort property is accessible only by water, but is teeming with sea turtles, spotted eagle rays and starfish. Kayaking is a great way to explore this area.

Rent or bring your own snorkel gear and step into an undersea world of coral and fish. The 650-foot underwater (maintained by the National Park Service) features plaques that provide a wealth of information about the sealyou’ll see beneath the water’s surface.

Keep an eye out for colorful Angel Fish, Parrott Fish, Sergeant Majors, Yellow Tail Snapper and Puffer Fish, which up when it’s threatened. Also watch for sea turtles swim effortlessly then pop up their heads for air from to time.

Among the coral in Trunk Bay, you’ll see: Brain Coral, folds and grooves that look remarkably like a brain; Fan is wide, thin and rounded and sways back and forth to

But there’s good news! US Geological Survey research scientist Caroline Rogers reports that this sea life "appears to be recovering in some areas," particularly in Trunk Bay, where Elkhorn Coral "is coming back naturally," she says. Studies of the species in Trunk Bay are supported by the USGS, National Park Service, Friends of the VI National Park, University of the Virgin Islands and the Disney Wildlife Conservation Fund.

Admission to Trunk Bay is $4 for adults; ages 16 and younger are free; Golden Age and Golden Access annual cardholders are $2.

one hour guided horseback rides to support the animals. horseback riding tours are Monday thru Friday at 3 pm and 5 pm by reservation only. enjoy a ride along the water to a rocky beach for pictures. Sorry, no sandy beaches to ride on in coral Bay. All our rescued or adopted horses and donkeys are well mannered and eager to please. The shopping on St. John is a cultural extravaganza. Local crafts and art are available in small stores and galleries. Tropical clothing, handmade and locally designed jewelry, exotic clothing from around the world are tantalizingly displayed in the cute and colorful stores of the island. Greatest variety can be found at Mongoose Junction, Wharfside Village and Cruz Bay, but you can find charming specialty shops tucked all around the island between Cruz Bay and Coral Bay.
